SMTIV's hilarious extortion mechanic and its meme status in the Japanese fandom

The grey morality of the alignments has nothing against pure greed.

1) Rundown

In Shin Megami Tensei IV, after purchasing the Fundraise App from Burroughs, Flynn will be able to request Macca from foes during battle. -> Foes will give Macca in small increments, at which point you can ask for more or stop talking and accept what you've been given. -> They may become infuriated upon being asked for Macca or repeatedly asked and attack the party. -> Occasionally, they will even simply give up and grant you a large sum.

2) Explanation

The rewards you get from only killing enemies are much more scarce in SMTIV compared to previous titles. Money is needed for buying good gear and filling your demon compendium, so you can understand how pivotal for game completion farming for Macca is in SMTIV. Hence the option for earning much faster through the Fundraise App.

On an additional note, the best way to take advantage of this method is through inflicting the enemy with the bind ailment before asking them, as it'll work 100% of the time with three turns worth of money without a chance of being attacked. Also, since enemies don't have a money limit, you can repeatedly fundraise from the same target as long as it's afflicted with the status.

While Nanashi's negotiation apps decreased in quantity (Dagda probably doesn't want you fooling around compared to Burroughs), Nanashi's greediness doesn't leave the older protagonist to shame.

In fact, the amount of fundraising targets is even bigger than the previous title's, with grunts from Ashura-kai and Ring of Gaea being particular examples of which Flynn couldn't dialogue previously while Nanashi is able to not only talk but do it in a threatening tone:

And if you thought that becoming a savior made Flynn give up on his old ways, you couldn't be more wrong! Flynn's (in)fame regarding stealing only became stronger with SMTIVA's release:

5) Flynn and Nanashi's fund partnership

Translation of SMTIVA's official guide, page 45:

While accompanying you in the Bonds or Massacre Route, Flynn will provide additional funds if you're successful in fundraising.

You can earn more money in the Bonds route, however Flynn will only follow you in YHVH's Universe. In the Massacre route, you earn less money but Flynn will accompany you wherever you go.

When farming for money (whether for the Demon Compendium or to purchase equipment), it's a good idea to make use of Flynn.

6) Fan names

The most popular fandom term that has been used since SMT4 is 緊縛ファンド kinbaku fando (bondage funds) for when you fundraise targets inflicted with the bind ailment. I once saw a Western fan referring to it as "Bind Fund" so there's your ENG equivalent

When referring to Nanashi receiving additional fundraising from Flynn, fans say 追いファンド oi fando (mugged funds). As shown above, the term used in the official guide is フリンによる追加ファンド Furin ni yoru tsuika fando (additional funds provided by Flynn). The nickname comes from turning 追加 tsuika (additional) into 追い oi, a shortened form of 追い銭 oisen which is part of the proverb 盗人に追い銭 nusubito ni oisen (additional fee to a thief), a saying for when you give the thief more on top of what was already stolen from you.

COAR submissions open May 1st - May 30th I have a few works that I've already finished and posted that I think I can submit for COAR, but I really wanna make something specifically for the fest. I also really want to do digital art for this too (I really don't make things easy for myself do I?)

it's almost 3 am and i feel like overexplaining my human knife design.

a lot of people give their knife jablinskis (gijinkas) blue eyes because blue is his unofficial image color and i 100% get it, but the reason i gave my knife design red eyes is because i wanted maintain that sense of "immediate physical danger" that he loses when he's a human and not a literal weapon.

(my mizu5 redraw is the only high quality art of him i have please forgive me)

it's kind of an unspoken agreement amongst ii fans that if you're gonna make a knife design, he HAS to be wearing some kind of leather jacket. my guy's also got a leather jacket, but i specifically made his a trenchcoat. this is because i really like madness combat and i thought that him and hank were kind of similar (murder fiends who are emotionally detached from the world around them except for one specific guy who is the only person they feel "safe" around my beloved), so i wanted him to be a little bit madness-esque visually.

i knew i wanted him to be wearing a necklace of some sort, and my original idea was for him to be wearing dog tags with the meeple logo on them, as a small hint towards his (and the rest of the cast's) connection to the company. at some point, i changed my mind and gave him a padlock necklace.

i realized that him having a padlock close to his chest was an interesting bit of symbolism, as its proximity to his heart could represent how he hates being vulnerable, effectively keeping his emotions "locked up". spiked chokers are another common trope when it comes to knife gijinkas, but i think they also offer another bit of symbolism. the neck is one of the most vulnerable parts of the body, so him wrapping his neck in spikes is a visual indicator that he wants people to keep their distance, or else they'll get hurt.

my design for him doesn't change much between season one and season two, the main thing being that he stops rolling his jacket sleeves up. this is mainly due to personal headcanons that i'm hesitant to elaborate on (boy howdy do i wish that more people were normal about self harm related headcanons! i sure do wish i could talk about the subject without worrying that people are gonna think i'm fetishizing or romanticizing it! wow!), but i also think it could represent how he becomes more closed off over time, no longer being hands on both with other people and the show itself, preferring to keep to himself and stay in the background. in a way, his jacket becomes less of a visual indicator of "i'm a badass and you should be scared of me", and more of something for him to retreat into.

there's some other minor things i could mention (like how the scars on his face are meant to resemble his original design's shine marks), but i think i've reached maximum yapping capacity. i like knife inanimate insanity and i like thinking about him and i like cornplating thank you all for reading YAY!!!

I don't know if i can ever forgive antis for running so many artists off the internet because they found them gross. There are so many artists that come to mind but one that sticks with me the hardest is Columbo who was literally ran off Twitter for the most vile reason. I often see tiktok artists redraw that one Monster fanart of Johan and Nina that Columbo made. This was what pushed me to watch the anime in the first place and I get so sad when I remember what happened. They deliberately tried to ruin the artist's life and outed them knowing that this could get them killed. They wanted them DEAD over DRAWINGS. The length some would go to ruin someone's life is terrifying and so fucked up.

Don't even get me started on doxxing. At what point in your sorry little life do you decide to dig someone's private info and leak it to the whole world. And still claim to be more righteous than another ?

Not to mention those who harmed themselves or committed suicide because of harrassment.

I remember how a 13yo artist on twitter committed suicide because of the harrassment they faced (Not proship related). You know what those bastards did ? Went to their last post and filled it with nothing but mockery. They were editing the comic to make amogus jokes. A 13yo child.

I blocked and reported over 700 and yet there was still more. I've never felt so sick in my entire life. They had just gotten the confirmation that they pushed a child to suicide and their immediate reaction was to laugh about it. They killed a child and they laughed ?

This isn't even the first time this happened and I think that's pretty much what made me realize that antis (or just internet fiends in general) didn't actually give a shit about anyone else or the content that they "hate" in general, they just use it as an excuse to show how vile they truly are because what sane person would do that ? Instead of blocking and moving on, you put someone's life in danger for a fucking drawing ? For what, an ounce of validation from strangers ? Is this what it takes for these fuckers to ruin someone's life ? Validation from online strangers ? Laughing with your online friends about how you ruined someone's life, with others who'd probably do the same to you without a second thought if they deem you as problematic in their mind ? This is seriously all it takes ? Their moral backbone is as real as the fictional character they try so hard to defend.

Do you really think that the fictional character will appear in your living room one day and thank you for ruining someone else's life ? It baffles me how they think the internet is a lawless barren land where you can do whatever. Like this won't have consequences ? This isn't the 90s, your information and everything that you post is preserved in archives and can be dug up if you end up getting prosecuted. Besides, if someone finds out about what you did, reports you and you end up in court, what do you tell the judge ? That you were "only trying to protect a fictional character from the icky proship pedos on twitter" do these guys even hear themselves sometimes ? I'm so fucking tired of this bullshit man...

It's hard to think of many comics works that have gone as much mid-publication and post-publication second-guessing as Matt Wagner's GRENDEL: DEVIL BY THE DEED, a tragic sort-of superhero saga about the battle between a suave fiend called Grendel (sort of an evil Batman by way of Fantomas) and his theoretically heroic but generally monstrous werewolf-like foe Grendel, centered on a young girl named Stacy Palumbo, who was the adoptive daughter of Grendel's alter ego, mystery novelist Hunter Rose. Wagner began the original version of the story in 1982, but after three installments, he pulled the plug, frustrated that his craft still fell short of his ambition.

In 1985, he completely retooled the story and ran it in serialized form in his fantasy series MAGE: THE HERO DISCOVERED, making the unusual choice to step back from the original version's conventional comic book narrative in favor of prose narration (ostensibly part of an in-universe book by Stacy Palumbo's daughter Christine, written years after the fact) with stylish Art Deco layouts, using inventive design to cover for some still dodgy figure work (compensated somewhat by Rich Rankin's inks). This was much more satisfactory to everyone except, apparently, Wagner, so he kept tinkering with it. The serialized version of DEVIL BY THE DEED (subsequently released as a graphic novel by Comico in 1986) was in color — I guess by Wagner himself, as no other colorist is credited in the MAGE issues — and looked pretty good, but when Dark Horse reprinted the story in the '90s, Wagner had it recolored by Bernie Mireault and Kathryn Delaney, giving it a significantly but not dramatically different look. Here are the two color versions; the left is the original MAGE version, the right the Mireault/Delaney version:

I'm not entirely sure if the recoloring (and relettering) was done for aesthetic reasons or if the original color separations were gone or no longer usable. While Wagner has always owned GRENDEL and MAGE, when Comico went bankrupt, many of the physical assets of the GRENDEL series ended up in limbo for many years before Wagner was able to reclaim them, so it may have been necessary to reshoot and recolor the story from the original art. In any case, while the Mireault/Delaney version is somewhat more dramatic, I find the loss of the original warm Deco vibe somewhat regrettable.

In the early '00s, Wagner returned to the Hunter Rose character with a miniseries called GRENDEL: BLACK, WHITE & RED, a series of stylish but not very pleasant short stories distinguished by using no color other than red. Wagner then had Chris Pitzer recolor DEVIL BY THE DEED along the same lines, in which version the above page looks like this:

I can't say I find this a great improvement — I think the B&W&Red thing (or B&W&Gold, etc.) is a gimmick best taken in small doses, and it makes the previously colorful DEVIL BY THE DEED seem rather drab. However, Wagner apparently considers it the definitive version, and it's what's now collected in the GRENDEL OMNIBUS books.

Wagner apparently still wasn't satisfied, so after the pandemic started, he decided to completely redo DEVIL BY THE DEED, not just remastering and recoloring it, but redrawing and rewriting the entire story, in the process expanding it to about three times its original length (and making an already dark story considerably meaner and bloodier). In the revised MASTER'S EDITION version (colored by Cameron Mazzia and Wagner's son Brennan), the equivalent of the above page looks like this:

Wagner's mature style is obviously more accomplished than when he was a teenager (40 years earlier!), but I can't help feeling that something has been lost in the process. The original color and most of the Art Deco motifs have gone (there are a few smatterings of the latter, but not many), but maybe the biggest loss is the sense of invention. I was always impressed at Wagner's boldness in completely reimagining his own story to work around what he felt were his own youthful limitations, and there's little left of that in the MASTER EDITION even if the results are more polished.
