Hi :) Before I ask my question I just wanted to say that I love how you characterize the twst boys in your writing and always take the effort of digging deep into these extremely (sometimes almost mind blowingly) complicated characters.  

So I am one of those people who loves making and seeing art of the twst boys genderbent. As I sometimes do admittedly lament twisted wonderlands lack of female cast members at times (though I do understand that having an all male cast is part of the games genre!) 

Anyway I was just wondering if the twst cast members were girls, would that in any way change the character development and dynamic of Epel and Vil in book 5? Because a large part of Epel's character development centres around his narrow, traditional ideas of gender roles and his internal need to feel “tough and manly”. Then Vil teaches him that femininity does not necessarily mean weakness and blah blah we know the story. Long story short, if Epel was a girl would that change her views on strength in any way? Would she feel the same need to be super tough and manly like her male counterpart? Would this change rewrite Epel's character arc entirely? Just wanted to know what you think.

I love seeing Twst genderbend AUs too :DD My favorite interpretations have to be by tribbutribby (aka bunnyshadeow), who has made a few zines (Twisted Bimboland) with that theme in mind. I love how they don't just draw "the Twst boys, but with boobs"; they thought through every character and how they would actually be as a woman, from the designs to the personalities. For example, their fem!Leona has short hair because female lions don't have manes and their fem!Jamil is described as a cool onee-san type, which totally fits with what we know about Jamil. I also love that they actually have a variety in body types! Fem!Riddle is short and flat, fem!Floyd is tall and lanky, fem! Azul is more plump, fem!Jack has thunder thighs, etc. Highly recommend their works, CANNOT RECOMMEND THEIR WORKS ENOUGH!!!

If NRC were an all-girls school, I think the conflict between Epel and Vil in book 5 would have to be considerably rewritten. We could still explore gender identity and expression, but it would have to be framed differently because of Epel and Vil, the main players, being women and not men. I guess it would still be possible to have Epel have outdated views on gender roles (tradwife!Epel?????????), but it doesn't make much sense since... Epel's technically at an elite school instead of preparing to be a wife or something. That might also lead to a very stereotypical message with Vil coming in and telling Epel "actually, you can girlboss too".

It might be interesting to see an interpretation in which Epel is forced to live by gender roles, but then she tries to rebel against it + disparages femininity by being a tomboy?? And then the lesson Vil ends up instilling in her is that femininity shouldn't be underestimated, it can be a strength too. That would be similar to the original message imparted onto Epel, and I think it would be more nuanced and less predictable than the girl power version.

I recently had to go travel and read a few works that I never got around to reading but was interested in.

Review:

The Good: The project is 18+, and the writing is very well done. It just feels quality. Plus the UI and and dark background are classy. The game is Twine, so you get the save functions of Twine and all that jazz. Anyways, descriptions are well done, the worldbuilding is grounded and helps form the politics in-game. It's thought-out and noticeable. The player customization goes hard and you even get the option to play mute! In The King's Hound, you also find a game that provides the LGBTQ+ demographic and FemMC playing community a welcoming and acknowledging home. The descriptions of the fight scenes and battles (like action set pieces) are good and don't leave you scratching your head. The transitions between paragraphs and pages happen naturally and without breaking pace, which shows the talent of a writer that considers their audience. Also, in regards to the King Arthur mythos and worldbuilding done by the author, i just really appreciate the fact that Camelot is Welsh.

It just gives me an idea of how much the author researched or cares about the mythos to give that respect of origin for the story. I had problems with how King Arthur was being super nice at first, but the author recently stated in a post that Arthur was acting in such a manner because he is deliberately trying to be the opposite of King Uther!

And that in the future, the work will offer more text to reveal that to us, the player.

The Bad: I wouldve liked being able to marry a cousin, niece, sister, or even daughter of King Arthur (or genderbender him) but that is literally my only complaint as a straight dude tryna self insert. The author tells you explicitly that you are marrying the king. If the author decides not to, as is their right and vision, I have no problem whatsoever. I still think the work is well written, and has many elements that i personally fuck with (low fantasy, grounded narrative, adult themes) The fact that i wish the author could change this, is only because i like the work so much. Instead, in this playthrough King Arthur will find that the MC practices

The Ugly: The MAP. But that's only because my history buff mind thinks of the British Isle when hearing these names and when i saw the map it physically gave me whiplash. But youre making your own version of the story, so bully!

The Aftermath: I know this game isnt catered towards me as a straight dude. It is a proud queer game with quality writing, that'd also do really well for the FemMC readers. I would recommend this game to anyone who wants a low fantasy medieval setting, with good writing, and grounded narratives that isn't a straight dude's traditional power fantasy.

Next playthrough, ima be a mute straight girl thatll hoe around King Arthur's court out of sheer spite

Also as it turns out, from what I've researched Jin is a gender neutral name so there we go.

(Personally tho I'm more a fan of this art)

-Entering a relationship with Jin of all people will not be an easy or fast process. Rather ironically it is going to be quite a slow burn before that point.

-The only real way to break down her defenses enough by the events of the game is to have known her back in the Military Academy. Getting close to her...acquaintances as she would call them is the best way to do so.

-Absolutely not a PDA person. If you try any of that she's going to push you away and chastise you if anyone's around as if you two don't know each other. She's pretty good at selling it too, if you didn't know better you'd think she was being entirely serious about it.

-It's only when you two are alone does she clear the air. She doesn't need to, you know how she is, but she still feels that need deep down. A subtle, but meaningful way of showing her true feelings.

-Anyone Jin lets into her circle, including you, she's quite protective of, but rarely in a way one can outwardly see. After becoming a Major she has quite a bit of influence in the NOL, which she can use to bail you out of trouble when needed.

-Getting you out of being scolded by one of your superiors (who she likely outranks), getting you out of missions that she feels are too dangerous for you, or making sure the medics pay more attention to you if you get injured. She'll never outright break protocol for you but depending on the situation she might bend it a little.

-In return you get to not act so cold, especially to Noel. Or, at least you try. Jin won't reveal why she seems to hate the poor secretary so much even to you. Wait til the events of the C-series to find out.

-Finding out how she interacts with Ragna is... very concerning to say the least. Especially when you find out he's her brother. Hope you're ready to be an unlicensed family therapist, you're gonna be an important part of the healing process for both of them. Well, as much as they can heal, at least.

-If there's one thing for you to know, this will not be an equal relationship or one that happens because Hazama genuinely cares about you. This is a relationship that starts because you're useful in some way to her. Or she just finds you exceptionally interesting, but in the way that a scientist would find a new species intriguing..

-You're not gonna know that though. Befitting of her snake motifs, Hazama is silver-tongued little weasel that keeps you in the dark entirely about her true intentions.

-Most of your time with her is spent with her pretty much psychologically profiling you, though not in a way that makes it obvious. As she's all but entirely devoid of real emotions herself, she sorta experiences them vicariously through you. Your likes, dislikes, goals, and aspirations are going to rub off on her to some extent.

-However if there's on undeniable quality she has, it's that she's a damn good actor. She makes it all seem like she's genuinely interested in who you are as a person and wants to learn about you like a real lover would.

-If you're not already in the NOL, which is highly unlikely, she'd subtly, gently push you into joining, and pull the proper strings to get you working closely with her.

-From there. it quickly becomes too late. You're asked to do some pretty absurd stuff for her, but she tells you with a smile that it's normal to do dirty work when you start out. It'll eventually get better once you gain some tenure. However that time never seems to come. Despite that though, Hazama has already worked your way into your head and her reassurances manage to work every time.

-She does care about you, though in her own odd, twisted way. If she had to ditch you to bail you out, she'd easily do so...however some part of her can't help but recoil slightly at the thought.

-She can most certainly be quite the passionate partner when she has the desire to, which she never thought she could even have in the first place. That's why she's kept you around for so long. However unbeknownst to you her heart is never really truly in it, at least in the way you'd want it to. Though who knows, that might be why you've stuck around yourself.

Agree with all of this but especially the Parentification thing has always annoyed me! I never understood why people think mentoring Damian was parentification, Dick was a grown man way out of his teens?! Lowkey, because I see this in the anti fandom side a lot, think they want to write Dick being the other boys’ mommy so bad but can’t because that’s icky so they say “parentification” & “Eldest Daughter Syndrome”, half joking but there is at least some feminization going on.

honestly, you're right about the feminization, i totally agree. because it's always weirded me out, this whole Eldest Daughter Syndrome thing? which is just a fancy, nicer way to say parentification. and the worst part is these concepts aren't even genderbending Dick, which i would be really interested in. they just want to assign him feminine aspects to further make him the victim that they can woobify and whump. if you feminize him, it's easier to put him in that submissive, victim role contrasted against Bruce or anyone else. and while i think gender roles can be interesting to play with in fanfic, esp in subversive ways, it has always picked me slightly that the fandom feels the need to feminize him in such a bold way where the only aspects of "feminity" he can experience are ones of subjugation. Bruce forcing him to parent and "mommy" the other Ribins like you said, Dick being isolated and only being appreciated as a caretaker, him never doing Any Wrong to other characters, and so on. when the fun of Dick is that he's nuanced and sometimes, he reflects some of Bruce's worst traits. his anger is not "female rage" it's *just* anger. (honestly, i'm not even sure what "female rage" is supposed to be anymore-) he's just someone with a complicated relationship with Bruce and yes, Bruce certainly failed him in certain aspects. but the thing is, the reason Bruce and Dick's fallout is *so* violent, is *because* they were so close. they had their golden years in Dick's youth where they ran as a well-oiled machine and everything was (relatively) perfect. Bruce definitely misstepped with Dick, but he far from victimized Dick.

it's always wild to me how the anti side of the family wants the Batfam to be Schrodinger's found family. in which is both completely wholesome and nuclear and everyone gets along and they have family meals together and they all live in Wayne Manor. but *also* it wants Dick to be a victim of parentification, Tim to be a victim of horrific abuse at the hands of his parents and then Damian and Jason, Jason to be deeply traumatized by his death and not coping well. like these don't click together? and it makes for a very jarring comparison when antis are so so clung to the idea that the Batfam is a nuclear happy family but also shoving these roles onto Dick that don't make sense. you can't have your cake and eat it too, yk.

also, not to fandom wank *too* hard but like. parentification is a *real* word. it's a real form of abuse and not something that exists in a fictional vacuum. and assigning it to characters that it outright doesn't fit can make it harder to discuss bc it dilutes the term. maybe it's bc i grew up in a home with rampant parentification so it hits close to home but like. this isn't just something you can slap onto a character to make an interesting-sounding meta anylsis. some fictional characters have been parentified and their stories explore that. Dick's does not. that is an adult. free him.

you should absolutely write the genderbent outsiders fic, it would be so interesting to see how many things get changed. often people genderbend one person and just turn them into someone everyone's attracted to rather than looking at character, or they do change everyone but it's still all surface level changes but from what i've seen you seem like you'd do something really interesting with it

HI! Ok so I do love this idea but I dont have time to wrote a full fic with the nuance it deserves but I did write out two little scenes for it so I'll post them here! One is lifted almost directly from the book its just the genderben take on it :)

I think it's interesting that 1412 is a Gentleman Thief (only aspect of Kid they were somewhat sure of was that he's a man) and Chikage was specifically the Phantom Lady or 'the Woman of 20 faces of the Showa Era' (very specific number but I digress) even though they both disguised as all genders, meanwhile Kaito's just enjoying being a Kid and spreading that child-like sense of wonder despite letting people believe he's around Inspector Nakamori's age (not an old man, children). He keeps his Dad's habits up being a bit more violent with men and not stripping women (I believe he would do the same in a genderbend because Kid's persona needs to have consistency and he grew up with the Head of the Kid Task Force, who was presumably still searching for Kid when he 'disappeared' because very wanted criminal still on the run we must find his hideout before he strikes again!) but he likes a challenge most and will pick his disguise for the heist using a children's choosing game so it will be too random to predict and finds it cuter to dress as a woman but will pick whichever option is more fun and useful for what he wants first and foremost. I love nonbinary Kaito though, Aoko doesn't like being called a tomboy by Kaito but can canonically rock her dad's look and refers to herself in the third person so she can be gender non-conforming as a treat. Let them make the most of their resemblance and just swap genders sometimes (each other's bi awakening because still attractive either way, maybe a little 'Kaito as a girl is cuter' because Aoko is crushing so hard on her female friends and more gender euphoria for Kaito). I want Jii to call Kaito 'ojou-sama' and Hakuba to treat them like a lady occassionally.

tsundere - a tsundere is the trope where a character, usually a girl, pretends to find their love interest annoying out of embarrassment for their crush

oversized prop - pretty straight forward. love a good disproportional hammer

fursona / fursuit - first bit of encouragement to explore outside 2D illustration. i know full suits are expensive, so let this be your sign to make or design a partial yourself out of whatever you have lying around; cardboard, fabric and wire, even paper. of course, you can stick to drawing your fursona

gjinka - it's a humanization of anything, whether that be a pokemon or other monster character, an animal, a concept or emotion like inside out, an object or even something like an app

unnatural eye color - fairly straightforward, character with weird eyes

crossover - characters from different media interacting with one another

dead meme - perfect opportunity for people like me who see a meme or trend going around and then, by the time they get around to it, its well run its course

animation meme - most classic animation memes are actually really simple with somewhat jerky movements, which is ideal for those just starting animation. if you've always wanted to animate but the concept seemed too daunting, here's the opportunity for you! of course, you can just reference popular animation memes with a still image if you’d prefer

something you've been bullied for - there are a lot of things that are considered cringe that a person can't change about themselves, even if they want or try to. i didn't want to single out any specific insecurities, so i left it broad enough for it to apply to everyone. it's kind of like a free space to celebrate anything about yourself that you've felt ashamed of

f2u base - f2u stands for 'free to use', basically an empty sketch you can use to draw whatever characters you want. this can be interpreted as either making or using a free base, so do whichever one you'd prefer. if you're using a base, just remember to credit the original artist if you post it

Fandom AU - good simple fun. draw characters you like from a piece of media you like in any alternate universe you like

YouTuber fanart - do some fanart for a YouTube channel you enjoy, whether that be for an art channel, a commentary or video game youtuber, or sketch comedy

mascot horror - anything relating to horror that involves cute marketable characters. FNAF, poppy playtime, Amanda the adventurer are all some examples

experimental makeup - trying out a makeup style that you haven’t done before. of course, if you aren’t comfortable wearing makeup, you can totally draw a character experimenting with their own makeup style

supernatural or monster character - demon, vampire, werewolf, fairy, or any monster type character you can think of

No, because i’m genuinely SICK over this Tim Drake erasure 😭😭 What did he do to deserve this? breathe too hard? Feel the burden of responsibility too much? He’s literally the glue of the batfam (Arguably, in current issues or newer games) and people just said, “Nah, let’s genderbend steph, cass, and babs but leave out the bisexual detective who raised himself at 10.” Make it make sense please. Hes an icon with depth (so you have room for flexibility), HOW CAN YOU HATE HIM? STOP. Tim Drake didn’t fake his own death, survive becoming Joker Junior and being infected with a deadly disease, and get kidnapped by the literal embodiment of the multiverse just to be left out like this. What's with the need to genderbend everything, but not include integeral characters? "Bat boys (Terms and Conditions may apply)" Head ass, IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO THE ORIGINAL BATFAM THEN DO IT RIGHT. There's an audience for everyone and you're limiting your crowd by purposefully not inluding him at this point. (Also, the need to genderbend characters to appeal to the majority is a bit odd... what about the WLW in the DC Fandom? There's so little here just like theres barely any MLM. 4. What was your favorite thing you wrote?

Definitely my exchange fic for @shadowisles-writes, Hind with Sharp Teeth. This is the first year in a while where I've been able to write semi-consistently, and it's been hard to scrape the rust off of some of my usual strengths (smut, banter, humor, weird shit). I'm really excited about this fic because it makes me feel like I'm finally back in the groove!

5. What piece was your most experimental or different from your usual style?

Probably my demon!Rhys oneshot, The darker the fruit, the sweeter. I love darkfic and have played with the idea of writing something unsettling for a while. This is the first time I've dipped my toes in.

6. Did any fics surprise you - either while writing or their reception?

I wasn't sure what to expect from No More Dreaming Like a Girl because it was my first posted ACOTAR fic, but it's gotten much less engagement than I thought it might. Maybe people are wary because the plot touches on a lot of info from ACOSF that has already been debated ad nauseam in the fandom. Or some people don't like extended angstfests, which... this may or may not become, depending on what happens once I get my shit together and finish my outline.

7. Do you have a fic you wrote and loved that went under the radar? (This is your sign to reblog/repost it!)

8. Who is an artist that inspired you?

Right now I love @lucychanart's work, especially her tamsand, as well as @froggybogwitch, @witchlingsandwyverns, and @queercontrarian's work, especially her genderbends.

9. Who is an author that inspired you?

Oooooof, so so so many people! @mmvalentine, @quakeriders, @separatist-apologist and @the-lonelybarricade for how perfectly they capture Feysand's multifaceted dynamic across so many different AUs. @fourteentrout for how well they navigate angsty, complicated ships. @whatishowedyouinthedark and @starfall-spirit for their darkfic. @thesistersarcheron for her worldbuilding and for embracing funny and/or chaotic AUs. @popjunkie42 for how she writes Rhys and indoctrinating me into the glasses!Rhys agenda. @rosanna-writer, @littedidyouknow, and @climbthemountain2020 for really well-done long form fics. The amount of talented authors and artists in this fandom blows my mind every day.

10. Who is a new author you discovered?

I think I'm the new kid on the block this year - but that means everyone I mentioned above, as well as other awesome creators like @foundress0fnothing, @shadowriel, @secret-third-thing and many others feel new to me.

11. Did you do any collaborations? How did it start?

I haven't! That's one of my goals for this upcoming year.

12. What accomplishments are you proudest of?

Honestly, just that I found something that inspired me again and committed to making more time to write than I have in the past couple of years. I became super active for a different fandom during the pandemic, and it wasn't sustainable. When I came back after a break, it just wasn't the same. Then I got distracted by life. It feels really good to be back and to remember what it feels like to scratch the creative itch.

13. What did you learn about writing or creating this year?

To let things take time and remember to get out of my head about my work.

14. Any advice you’d like to share with new or aspiring writers?

Find rituals and routines. Try to commit to them even when you don't feel particularly inspired. Writing is kind of like working out in that you have to condition those (mental) muscles if you want to perform well. Spontaneous inspiration can make for a really satisfying eureka! moment, but you can't rely on it if you want to get into a regular writing habit.

15. What are your creative goals for 2025?

I'm trying not to start too many longer, multichapter fics before I finish (or at least make good progress with) the ones I have at the moment. I also would love to do more collaborative work and build fandom friendships (I'm still strategizing about this bit because I'm too shy for my own good). I also plan to explore some new pairings!
