The main reason to teach kids about Roman numerals isn't that they're useful in real life, but because they're so bloody awkward to actually calculate with that it might give the students some appreciation for the number system we actually use.
Like yeah, long multiplication is a ballache, but it could be so much worse.
#it's also a fun little peek into history#but not everyone cares about that#organic home grown content#maths education#roman numerals#100 tier#or should i say c tier?

i love college cuz as soon as i decide to do a 180 w my major i do cs and physics classes and im like 'mmm i wish i could major in math'
#the thing is i really just want to keep taking these math-based classes without consequences i would love that so much actually#because taking these physics and cs classes makes me realize how much i lOOOOOVE computation i love it so much#its just the way math works in college is soooo shit its so sad#and i know im enjoying physics now but i fi majored in it it would get so much worse for me#same w cs#i want to dedicate my life to learning math and cs and physics AND writing without consequences of doing so you know :/#i wish i could have a free education that never had impacts on my grades and career choices#maybe in the future when i have a stable job and can take classes on the side i can continue w learning math and stuff#its just so dififcult as a major and i know if i continued with it as a major i would be muchhhh worse off#but i love computation so much like i love reading but the computaation part is so fun i love doing it#sunny rambles

Me writing what should have been at most a bullet point one-shot comedic romance adventure: “hee hee hoo I’ll knock this out in no time”
Me, four months later and 112k+ words in: “Hmm I think I need to look at the practical engineering reference guide again so we can really assess the recycler issue on this cistern in the compound because I don’t know that they could have it on the lower level if the mountain rock is going to have a level 9 on the Mohs hardness scale—”
#Cannot stress enough how very little any of this research actually gets put into the fic itself#I just need for any technical/sci-fi details I include to sound somewhat believable even if they’re only mentioned in passing#Most of these conflicts are based on their environment so it has to have some measure of truth at the center#It’s like how you can tell when a book centered around nature or agriculture has been written by somebody who didn’t actually grow up aroun#either of those things and obviously hasn’t done their research to the point their characters know what they’re talking about#Anyway yeah. The soldiers need to seem competent at fixing their equipment and improvising tools based on the vast amount of training#and education they were given#Which means I as the author need to understand the problem the complications AND THE SOLUTION well enough the characters sound#not just knowledgeable but natural and familiar with it when talking about it#Same goes for the pilot. I’m pulling out my old flight manuals and looking into advanced avionics just so I can consolidate#a simplified answer into two sentences she can use to explain her area of expertise to somebody who has no idea what kind of ship she flies#Anyway#Fic: Call Sign#The actual simple reason for doing this is that effective imagery and worldbuilding fills out the world and makes it richer as a result#And unfortunately that means I am doing several crash courses in about fifteen different sciences so that I know what I’m talking about#Fun fact I wanted to be a cargo pilot but the aviation program at my university was THE most expensive major they had#And I’m not good/fast enough at math to get through even the small aircraft piloting guide 😞#If I can’t have the adventures and experiences I want I can at least tell stories where they happen#The good news is I have had plenty of experience fixing things and improvising technical solutions based on what science and history I know#So many of these problems are just household and vehicle issues on a bigger scale

Early Childhood - Hundred Board Extension
The Hundred Board is a familiar Montessori material used to help students understand numerical order and patterns. Typically, students place tiles numbered 1 to 100 in sequence on the board. However, in this extension activity, this student is creatively exploring the concept of diagonal patterns. She carefully places the tiles diagonally, starting from 1 and progressing to 100. After arranging the tiles, she writes the numbers down on paper that has a matching grid. By engaging in this diagonal arrangement and transcription, she discovers new patterns and relationships between numbers, further reinforcing her understanding of numerical order and enhancing her fine motor skills.

not really a vent post but god i wish i were like. smart.
#its all fun and games until you fail to Understand something simple or someone reminds you you really fucking suck at math and always have#and almost repeated first year of high school and barely passed the final hs exam because of it too.#like i do make fun of the math thing on a daily basis but sometimes it really just hits you#that yeah all those people were right. you really ARE much more Stupid than an average person and there's nothing you can do about it#but its not like im not Aware of it. i really am. so it'd be nice if people weren't so set on reminding me every once in a while#just to make sure i dont forget or something. trust me this one thing i wont forget ever lmao#there's only so much educating yourself can do and i may have like. Knowledge or Feeling. but the intelligence is severely lacking alas

So I'm re-learning how to calculate the molar mass and balance chemical equations and I forgot how FUN it was omfg
#second week of adult education and even though it's extensive I'm having a blast!!!!#same with maths! it's all coming back and it's so fun to do algebraic equations xD#my brain missed being intellectually challenged lol#now I'll be able to make North ramble about chemistry stuff with ease

Really appreciating the privilege I have to have learnt about math at a relatively high level. The concepts have fundamentally changed my world view and how I interact with the world. Truly breathtaking.

As I was going through engineering school I came to the realization that the best way to learn and teach math to people who don't have a natural inclination for it is to say, actually speak out loud, all the terminology in actual words, in language that humans use in everyday conversation. To add a little poetry and prose to it. Unfortunately talent in language is something that is more and more lacking in science and math teachers and the STEM field in general.
Instead of always going on about the x of the y over the z or whatever, you actually say what each symbol, operation, equation and formula *means*. The important part is to get students to understand the *meaning* behind each variable symbol and the *relationships* that each equation implies, rather than endlessly memorizing formulas. This is especially true once you get to higher math and you start switching symbols all willy nilly since you're literally running out of letters.
Y’ever read something and have understanding that has eluded you interminably suddenly stop, curl up, and snuggle neatly into a fold in your brain because a new way opened to it?

#calculus#understanding#integrals#math#teaching#education#i think this is why i decided that stem wasn't for me#although i do think#math is fun

mfw it turns out taking notes on something I'm trying to learn not only helps me contextualize and learn the component parts but also gives me an easy to reference catalogue of information to help me remember later

#years of math and science classes have made me hate the concept but it turns out doing it for something you like is very helpful and fun#damn you higher education and your shitty application of practices you've misled me once again!

Lower Elementary - Small Bead Frame Multiplication
The Small Bead Frame is a hands-on material that helps students understand the concept of place value and the mechanics of mathematics. By manipulating the beads, children can see the concrete representation of abstract numbers, making it easier for them to grasp the process of carrying and combining units, tens, hundreds, and thousands. This student is very focused while completing 4-digit by 1-digit multiplication problems using the Small Bead Frame.
