Just Passing Through - wc: 592 - Jegulus,Rosekiller w/ past Sunkiller

Barty first sees James again on a train platform in Prague, right before the summer heat becomes unbearable. It’s been years—seven, maybe eight—and Barty is older now, sharper around the edges. Evan is beside him, too preoccupied with a disposable film camera and the flaring architecture to notice the way Barty's spine straightens. He doesn’t say anything. Doesn’t need to. James doesn’t look over.

But Barty knows. Barty feels it. James knows he’s there.

Later, on the Charles Bridge, Barty watches James from a distance. James is smiling—always has been, always will be, like some cosmic punishment—and there's someone next to him. Regulus. Slim, elegant, more real than the ghost Barty used to picture when he couldn’t sleep. Regulus wears James' coat even though the air’s too warm for it, and Barty can’t decide if it makes his stomach churn with resentment or regret.

He walks away before James can turn his head.

The second time, it’s a grocery store on a rainy Tuesday, half a world away from Prague. They’re both standing in front of the same row of overpriced red wine. James reaches for the bottle Barty’s already holding.

Fingertips brush. Neither pulls away.

It’s slow. Reverent. Torturous.

Barty lets James take the bottle. James doesn’t look back. His cart has flowers in it—white ones, delicate—and a frozen quiche Barty knows he’ll burn because James never remembers the oven timer.

The store lights are cold and too bright, and Barty stands still for too long.

In late autumn, Barty sees James again in a gallery opening Evan dragged him to. Regulus is featured—portraits in grayscale, cold and honest. James stands at his side in a navy suit, mouth tight with pride, but his eyes scan the crowd like he’s looking for something. Or someone.

They meet eyes for the briefest second. James doesn’t smile.

Neither does Barty.

Winter comes with a funeral. Not theirs. A mutual acquaintance, distant and tired of living. The chapel smells of wood polish and loss. James sits on the other side of the room, and when Barty catches a glimpse of his profile—shoulders tense, head bowed—he aches.

Not for the dead.

For everything they never were.

There’s always something. A coffee shop in the early morning. A layover in Amsterdam. A wedding where Barty is seated across from James at a table for twelve.

They don’t speak.

They don’t need to.

Because there are glances. A lingering pause when their hands brush while passing a bread basket. The way James always, always looks away first like it hurts too much to stay. Barty never stops looking. He can’t. He never could.

Evan kisses Barty like he’s trying to make him forget. Regulus touches James like he’s anchoring him to the present. It works, sometimes. There are good days. There is laughter and comfort and shared toothbrushes and messy Sunday mornings.

But sometimes, Barty watches James in his memories and wonders if that love is something that just lives in him now. Something permanent. Dormant, but waiting. Like a muscle that aches when it rains.

They pass each other again in spring, on a boardwalk by the sea. James is laughing at something Regulus said, his sandals kicked off and his curls wind-tangled. Evan is holding Barty’s hand, guiding him toward an ice cream stand, talking about flavors, about nothing.

James and Barty brush shoulders as they pass.

No words.

But their hands twitch.

Their chests tighten.

And for a moment—just one—they both look back.

I want to write rn but I can't decide what to work on...

I'm writing all of them and some others that I don't feel like writing atm (for me, personally... maybe I'll publish them once I'm done if I like how they turn out) but I just don't know which vibe I'm getting rn.

Wiseflower

Minerva and Poppy falling in love in their Hogwarts years, probably with some cute scenes from after they've graduated as well.

They're friends with Rolanda (Hooch) and Pomona (Sprout) as well, and they sort of do Marauders-esque escapades too, because I've always seen Minnie as being mischievous in her Hogwarts years, so why not?

It'll be a year-by-year sort of thing and probably quite long.

Skittles

Jegulus and Rosekiller falling in love because I love them so they have to love each other.

Again, it's a year-by-year that follows their storyline as close to canon as possible (but with Slytherin Barty because I cba to make a bunch of random unimportant OCs to sleep in the boys' dorm).

It would mostly follow Regulus's POV, with a few dips into Barty, Evan, and James, and the odd chapter from Pandora and Dorcas's POV as well.

Doctor AU

Inspired by a post I saw on here somewhere (I can't remember whose it was though, sorry), so I'll probably never post it, but it's a bit of fun so...

Chronically ill Remus Lupin starts going to the privately owned doctor's surgery that Regulus works at. But Remus has to bring his overly-protective friend, James Potter, along to every meeting, and Regulus's irritating brother won't stop bombarding them.

Jegulus and Wolfstar. Need I say more?

Effie and Walburga

Obviously, it's set in their time period (I've put them a couple of years ahead of Minnie, so they'd probably be in the same universe if you will). Effie and Walburga fall in love, really they do, but Walburga's twisted views drive them apart, and when she ends up being forced to marry her cousin anyway, Effie has to struggle to move on from the girl she once loved.

There will be a LOT of angst, but everything will because I can't write without angst 😔

Marauders' final year

Follows the Marauders and Co. through their seventh year of Hogwarts (Skittles in sixth) as everyone falls in love. And I mean literally EVERYONE.

Jegulus, Wolfstar, Dorlene, Rosekiller, Marylily, Gilderat??, Pandora/Xenophilius (do they have a name??).

Expect a lot of chaos, confusion, angst, and fluff.

Starting off strong with the rest of my episode 2 ideas:

“What makes you different makes you strong” - use this bit maybe? Idk we’ll see how the rest of the ep plays out for them

Episode 3:

The Silco flashback in the beginning can tie into Riddle’s backstory??? Something something with Alphard

“You’ve got a good heart, never lose it.” - Alphard, Sirius content is WINNING

Possibly do ^^this chapter from Alphard’s POV and then have an interlude that’s Sirius’ POV

Make all that^^ the end of a chapter to leave everyone on a miserable cliffhanger after Alphard gets captured

Start with some pandalilly content the chapter after :)

Have a nice but angsty lil James and Sirius moment when they debrief about Monty dying and Alphard getting caught

And then ofc the scene with the hex cores and powder’s freak out moment are ALSO important but we’ll probably tone it down just a little bit to fit regulus’ character a bit better (A/N: okay for this one I imagine a sort of pacing, regulus falling into a bit of an inferiority spiral thinking of all the ways he feels like he's failed Sirius up until then. More of a panic attack then a breakdown cos i feel like that's more his forte)

The entire bit from when vi and crew make it to rescue vander up until the end of the episode will possibly be its own chapter? At least a VERY sizeable chunk of the chapter

We DO have to include the oogly moogly scientist bits with pandora and lily cos that is important

Use the monkey clanging or the individual bomb explosions as a sort of measurement for how fast things happened after regulus throws in the bomb (A/N: OKAY THIS??? Let me see if I can paint a picture properly. I'd love to start the scene with a "As (description of whatever happens and regulus throws in the bomb), (insert number here) things happened all at once." and then describe how the bomb rolls in and bounces. And each time it bounces, do a description of one of the aforementioned things happens. I dunno how to fully describe it, I may have to write out a snippet and make a post on that to fully describe but AGH! it is SO good in my head)

Random Ideas I've Had:

I want to focus a bit more on James and Regulus' relationship in the first few chapters before it all goes to hell so that the scene on the bridge when the two of them will fight hurts as much as it should

not plot related, but it would be LOT to have one fic for season 1 and one fic for season 2. like a sequel. cos pitfighter sirius???? are you fucking KIDDING ME?? I will die

obviously the prison Vi is in is gonna be Azkaban for this AU, so that's super cool

I would LOVE to pay homage to the horcruxes in the way that Silco has his who creepy stuff on his face (idk I don't play league so i don't know the lore

I am THRILLED to have Mary as Mel cos agh! her character arc is going to be FANTASTIC and i love that I get to let Mary commit crimes

OH MY GOSH- I just had the idea to have Barty and Evan as Clagger and Milo and it's going to be FANTASTIC having the two of them haunting the narrative (and regulus' conscience) the way milo and clagger do for jinx

for this part, you gotta remember: I'm only thirteen, and i have less of a scope of just how big anti-islam and anti-asian the world is compared to adults.

unfortunately, cultural appropriation is a massive underlying issue in this fandom, and globally. I'm used to it now, but if I can change things here, at least I've changed something, right?

the main thing that you should do is reference a wider part of being indian; don't stop at the colour of our skin. it may not seem offensive, but when that's all im reduced to, a desperate chance to be more inclusive, it's hurtful and invalidating. researching is a massive yes, and you'll learn plenty on the way, too!

the problem lies within people like flour, not you. those who are ignorant will just never bother to learn, especially if they're not part of a minority. what often bugs me is this need to feel oppressed; it's fine if you only feel comfortable sharing your correct pronouns online, but pretending to have mental disorders because you want to fit in is where it would draw the line. there are other ways to go about making friends.

honestly, cas? I mostly see james' representation in your jegulus fics, (which is totally fine!!) but i don't like jegulus content as much because of canon regulus (again, not an issue that you do!) but in clandestine, which i did read, there wasn't much mention to either james' culture OR skin, so you could argue he was white in it i guess!! if you specifically want to make him brown, talk about the things he may do that only resonate with that region, or hardships that he may face to the very real and ongoing racism that is present today.

Okay I hoping it's okay if I'm very honest here? Not in a bad way just in a....I sometimes get so nervous to talk about these things, because I genuinely want to learn and NOT offend. So please tell me if I say anything off-base.

As far as your friend is concerned...yeah, it sounds like maybe starting by blocking her could be good. I feel like it's hard because depending on where you live, saying something could be unsafe. But also I think you should know that you're well within your rights to say something and question her choices. I'm sure you know that. But yeah

And you're right, it's almost sad that someone feels they need to pretend about ANYTHING in their life in order to feel accepted. It makes me wonder, when people pretend like that, what they're missing in their life to feel the need to pretend like that. Like I'm sad for them. But I also am able to look at it from a much more privleged POV

As far as James (and other characters) I think my personal struggle comes with the fact that I headcanon him (as well as dorcas and many others) as not white. But like...I go back and forth about how to write that. Because in some ways, I wonder: do I even mention it? How much does it matter to the particular story I'm writing? Because while I know that race can affect so many aspects of a person's life, if it's not central to the plot, how much do I go into it? I don't speak in detail about a white character's race, after all. So I tend to stick to words like "pale" "tan" etc. Like in Clandestine, I pictured both James and Dorcas specifically as not white, but I didn't mention specifics, because like...that was Regulus's story.

Not to equate the history or experiences of the two in any sense, but to me it feels like Regulus's transness. In most of the things I write, I see him as trans, but I only mention it or tag it if it's relevant to the story.

I also struggle because I know that even with all of the research in the word, I fear that I can't accurately portray what it is like to be a POC because I am not. I don't want to somehow trivialize the feelings associated with that, I guess.

But I don't know if I'm going the right way about it. And I'm not asking you to give me definite answers to those thoughts and questions.

I really am thankful you shared all of this with me, though, because i am cooking up another idea that would involve a more in-depth look at James, so I definitely want to include some of his culture :D If you're open to it, would you be willing to DM me? I don't want to make you do all the work by answering all my questions for me, but if I'm confused it would be great to have someone to check the facts with!

okay! so the character dynamics are not always the same obviously it's pretty impossible but Jesse would be Kingsley 100%

I'll go through all of the characters and the basic plot because I'm obsessed with this idea and will probably never be able to write it :/

Jackson:

Ellie = James Dina = Reg Joel = Monty Jesse = Kingsley Tommy = Sirius Maria = Remus WLFs

Abby = Evan Jerry = Pandora Owen = Barty Mel = Narcissa Nora = Bellatrix Manny = Benjy?

Okay so this one actually twists up the game plot a lot I have one with Reg as Ellie and that pretty much sticks with the game, but this one.

James isn't immune, he was never the immune one. He grew up moving around a lot, his Dad needed to, but then settled in Jackson when he was about fourteen and hasn't moved since. Everything is okay, for apocalypse standards, until a random group comes in and kills Monty in cold blood. It's the same as the game with James and Reg being together while Sirius and Monty were on patrol together.

It follows the plot from there pretty much, Sirius goes ahead to kill Monty, and James follows. Reg goes with him. They go through their three days in Seattle at the same pace. They kill whoever Jordan is I'm honestly not sure who he would be, and find Leah. From there they find Polaroids and Regulus realizes fuck he knows those people. Evan and Barty were his friends back when he was living in one of the QZs. He keeps this information until they get to the Theater and instead of the Dina pregnancy confession, it's that confession instead.

While fighting through the subway Regulus twisted his ankle and can't walk so he's out of commission and James goes alone to go find Sirius who they think is in Hillcrest. He finds Kingsley instead and takes him back to Reg. After James goes to the hospital and tortures kills Bellatrix for Evan's whereabouts. Reg is in excruciating pain and they both agree they need to take him back, but James can't leave Sirius behind so they go out to get him. They part ways as James goes after Evan and Kingsley goes after Sirius. James kills Barty and Narcissa and realizes Narcissa is pregnant after, which leads to him having a panic attack and Sirius runs in to soothe him and take him back.

Following the game that night they agree to go back but Evan comes in, knocks Sirius down and shoots Kingsley dead.

We switch to Evan's POV, and we learn Pandora was the immune one. She was taken to the hospital against Evan's word and Pandora's permission. Evan can't get to her in time to save her. Monty was the doctor. He killed Pandora and it didn't even bring him a cure.

From Evan's side of things a lot is different. Barty and Narcissa obviously aren't together, but we do have Evan meeting two siblings, but they're twins this time. And he goes through his three days. Everything is pretty much the same, expect Barty doesn't get cold feet killing an elderly "Muggle" he gets cold feet killing a young one, a girl who couldn't be older than seventeen. She looked exactly like Pandora. Also the boy twin is the one who gets compartment syndrome and the girl twin travels with Evan.

I'm rushing because I've been yapping so long not because I don't love Abby's section of the game. Evan's part is basically just him accepting Pandora's death and breaking free from his anger. It's finding another reason to fight for or the "light" if you wanna go full tlou.

The boy twin ends up dying on the island after the girl twin runs off. Evan comes back to find Barty and Narcissa dead. He goes after James.

The end of the game is the exact same minus JJ. James can't forget about Evan and Regulus just wants to move on. Sirius and Remus take some "time away from each other." Sirius comes over angry that James can have a good life and he can't. He's too hurt to go and guilts James into going instead.

At the end of the fic after going after Evan again James ends up saving him instead of killing him. He comes back home and has nothing left. Regulus is gone, and the only glimpse of happiness is gone too.

ive got a lot of them bc it got a lot of reworks before i started writing using the final outline, but one is the marauders have a plushie they share like a child of divorce, which was just a funfact idea that i just never got around inserting in the fic, and one idea more important, that the story would end with Regulus abdicating and leading to a fall of the monarchy but then i decided to go into more realistic routes

I agree with your thing about the black brothers, like from someone who has two siblings, one of which I am estranged from. My sister (who I'm not estranged from) has said some shitty things to me, we have gotten in to some fights in our lives but I can not imagine not talking to her

It took a LOT for my brother and I to become estranged and it's only because it is literally not safe for me to have any sort of relationship with him

Alls that being said, the idea that Sirius would just give up on his BABY brother solely because he got sorted into a different house is idiotic. Especially if you agree with the idea that their home was abusive. I feel like Sirius would be SO protective of Regulus and yes I think they drive each other crazy but you can't tell me he was just like "nah fuck this guy we aren't brothers anymore" at 12

I also have seen the hc that Sirius slightly agreed (or maybe didn't agree but thought it was just true) with blood supremacy before he started at hogwarts just because it was all he had ever known and had a hard time the first year or so at hogwarts and his friends were the ones who helped him come to terms with the fact that like no that's not cool

And I think that Sirius understood at least to a degree why Regulus still had those ideas from home and then being reinforced in his house at school. You can't tell me he gave up on him instead of trying to get through to him. I feel like Sirius fought for Regulus literally until he died and you can not convince me otherwise

Anyway, as someone with siblings, I feel like jkr writes siblings in such an unrealistic way and it's super aggravating

so i've said before, and i'll say it again, that a big reason why i started writing fic is because i got so tired of seeing Marauders At Hogwarts writing sirius as a rebel without a cause at 11. and i know we see bits of baby sirius on the train in "canon", but its a GLIMPSE and it's told through Snapes POV who is...dlksaf;jdfaskf.

Sirius was raised in a home where pureblood mania was shoved down his throat, and that was it. he got no other view points, no other anything other than Blacks are Best and everyone who errs is incorrect. The arrogance we see in Sirius as a character??? Where do we think that comes from???

Hogwarts was a learning curve for Sirius!! I believe he was sorted into Gryffindor because of his heart and his character and the hat seeing something that even baby sirius couldn't see. and you can bet sirius said "mudblood" at least once and james potter was there like "okay, no, that's not the vibe, muggleborn works" and sirius was like "...huh, i literally never knew there was another word for it. because i was only TOLD there was one word." and adapts!!!

So he GETS regulus. he GETS it. and it takes time and years for sirius to unlearn most of it, and he learns through James and Remus and the rest of his gryffindors, and he knows that he would be regulus if he was in Slytherin!! HE KNOWS. So no, he's not just going to abandon ship, and i really truly think a lot of time at #12 was spent talking to reg like "Hey, no, look at what Im learning!" (which makes sense, you know considering, how reg died etc etc...). Sirius was protective to a fault.

Hello! Here are my questions for the tag you posted: 5, 23 and 32! I hope you had a nice weekend!

5. Fanfic pet peeves

I hate to be an English teacher about this but improper grammar, punctuation, and paragraph breaks KILL me in fanfic. I know fic is a space for writers to learn and grow but oh man I can't stand it. Sometimes it's not so bad and I literally just rewrite it in my head as I read but especially with dialogue if it's not punctuated properly I will nope out of it.

I also don't care much for first person, and will often nope out of a fic if it's in first person. I really couldn't tell you why. It's like a cat touching a bathtub. I open it, I see the wet, and I get out. I'll only read a first person POV if it comes highly recommended by a trusted friend.

23. Favorite trope to write

It's probably no surprise, but I love an AU. I love taking characters from one setting and putting them into a new setting with new problems.

I used to love high school AUs when I was in school but now writing a high school AU feels like going to work. Even college AUs don't appeal to me. Harry Potter AUs were this super cool blend of school AU and magical AU and I used to love sorting characters but now those have a bad taste, too, so my favorite is probably fairy tale AUs, which I've done for Percy Jackson and am working on for Ladybug.

Funnily enough, I don't read alternate setting AUs too often? When it comes to reading I often prefer like, alternate timelines, more small changes in line with the Harry Potter Everyone Lives AU or other fun potential breaking points from canon.

TY for this question bc it forced me to go back through the depths of my AO3 and reread some of my favorite pieces.

“You know,” she says, “I suppose I never really expected Black to be gay, but I definitely pegged Lupin.”

But the worried boy she glimpsed is long gone.

Potter quirks an eyebrow, and there’s nothing but pride and boyish joy in it. “You’ve pegged Lupin?”

Heat flushes into her cheeks and she grabs a pillow off of the bed and throws it at his head. He laughs and ducks. It lands on the door with a heavy thump and falls to the floor.

If he thinks about — if he really sits down and thinks about his relationship with Evans, whatever that is exactly — he doesn’t mind that she knows he and Remus are together. He doesn’t mind that she knows he’s gay. But it wasn’t James’ secret to share, and Sirius is so protective of his secrets.

He’s not embarrassed or ashamed; it’s the opposite, really. Sirius has, ever since he was a child, intentionally hidden all the best parts of himself. He buries a tender heart under the roar of a motorcycle. He buries his unshakeable loyalty under harsh, cutting swears. He buries his love for his friends and Remus under layers of thick skin and carefully sharpened barbs.

James, Remus, and Peter have all, in intonations ranging from tender to desperate, asked him why he’s such an arsehole all the time, and he doesn’t really have an answer. At least, not a real answer. He’s buried that truth so deeply that even he can’t reach it.

While Sirius buries all the better parts of himself and flaunts his bad habits like the final sale items in a shuttering shop, Remus displays only his very best habits on carefully dusted shelves and buries his anger, his grief, and his desire in the coldest, darkest of cellars.

Maybe Regulus and Dumbledore alike did not deserve forgiveness, but love was not always about what people deserved.
