미니 코리아가 2024년 10월 8일에 뉴 미니 쿠퍼 S 5도어(New MINI Cooper S 5-door)를 국내에 공식 출시했습니다. 2024년 7월부터 국내에 판매된 뉴 미니 쿠퍼 S 3도어에 이어 뉴 미니 쿠퍼 S 5도어의 판매가 시작되면서, 국내에 판매되는 뉴 미니 쿠퍼(해치백) 라인업은 모두 세 가지(뉴 미니 쿠퍼 C 3도어, 뉴 미니 쿠퍼 S 3도어, 뉴 미니 쿠퍼 S 5도어)로 늘어났습니다. 이번에 우리나라에 선보인 뉴 미니 쿠퍼 S 5도어는 먼저 나온 3도어 모델보다 휠베이스가 70mm 길고, 뒷좌석에 편리하게 타고 내릴 수 있도록 뒤 도어가 더해진 것이 특징입니다. 그와 더불어 적재공간도 3도어 모델보다 넓어, ��본이 275L(3도어는 210L)고 뒷좌석을 모두 접으면 최대…

The little French car that could, the Renault 5. Top to bottom: Normal Renault 5 - Renault 5 Turbo - Renault 5 Turbo Maxi
After the Alpine A110's string of victories during the rallies of the 1970s, Renault wanted to make a car to compete in the newly established WRC rules but the A110 is too old to compete in the new rules so Renault went and scour for their new machine and the Renault 5 landed on their tables.
The Renault 5 was initially built to replace the Renault 4 as the econobox concept so it was built as a FWD car and a hatchback, just like the Mini. It launched in 1972 to the general public and even came with a variety of engines from the 782cc i4 NA for the entry model to the 1.3L NA i4 for the top range model.
However, Renault still didn't have anything to compete with and after watching the short wheebase Lancia Stratos shred its competition to bits during the 1970s, Renault decided to copy Lancia but they had a massive problem as the standard Renault 5 would be impossible to compete against the Stratos as its FWD thus they couldn't pump that much power into the drivetrain even if they wanted to. To remedy that, Renault asked Gandini who was at Bertone for help and Gandini stepped up to the task.
He instantly took the basic Renault 5 and ripped it apart. He instantly widened the wheel arches by alot and swapped the drivetrain from a FWD to a RWD and to add a little more "spice", he even asked Renault to put the engine in the rear, behind the driver rather than at the front. Renault did that and then to add even more "spice" added a new 1.4L turbo i4 into the new shell and called it the "Turbo 5" and set it ready for homologation.
By 1980, Renault started to build the Turbo 5 for sale to the general public and it was tuned to 160hp which doesn't seem like alot but it was the most powerful of the Renault 5 variants. In race form, Alpine/Renault pushed the car to make 180hp and did well. By 1981, Renault had upgraded the design with more aggressive aero packs to homologate it for the new Group B rule and to increase the engine displacement to 1.45L for smoother power delivery and named it the "Renault 5 Turbo 2". By 1983 and with everyone being quicker, Renault upped the power of the 5 Turbo 2 the Turbo Maxi where it went to 250hp-350hp depending on courses.
But, despite how well the Renault did, by 1982 and with the oncoming of the domination of Audi with their concept of AWD, all the 5 Turbo can do is dominate on tarmac courses like Tour de Corse or Monte Carlo but that's it as on the dirts, the Audi dominated. Regardless, Renault kept pushing and trying but by 1984, Renault knew the gig was up and everyone went towards AWD and by 1985, pulled the plug and not issue factory support anymore and let privateers do their work with the Renault 5 Turbo Maxi. Despite Renault's Group B failures and gradual loss of footing into rallying even for privateers, some of them took it to the circuits and they actually performed rather well and in 1987, even clinched the French Supertouring Championship.
It might not be the best rally car built nor was the right car for the wrong time, it is still a legendary vehicle.

From 1981 on and until production was stopped in 1985 (end of sales in 86), Lancia took over the distribution and model name of Fiat's Italian answer to the Mini Cooper. Prior to this, the A112 was marketed under the Autobianchi brand, which was also part of the Italian automotive group. As always Carlo Abarth explored all the limits of driving pleasure with this little, angry hatchback.

(and if they also all lived somewhere with similar roads to where i learned how to drive bc i can be more specific that way. also im not a car guy so all the cars are from real people i've met)
inspired by me learning to drive and being bad at it
neil: drives a stick shift and isn't very good at it. he saved up money working to buy a shitty corolla from probably just some guy and was like yeah i can totally drive a stick lol how hard can it be when asked about that. the guy was like uhh probably pretty hard standard shift is famously not easy to learn. and he was like itll be fine dont worry about it. every time he switches gears it feels like the car is falling apart. he has gotten stuck trying to start the car stopped on a slight uphill incline for like 10 minutes multiple times. half the time when he starts the car he does it way too fast, and he constantly kills it when coming to a full stop. he once flipped his car over when going down a windy road. he is very attached to his car despite this, named it something like gertrude. its constantly full of shit and has a ton of doodads hanging from the rearview mirror
todd: will not drive above 25 mph unless he absolutely has to when around other cars. always takes backroads if he can because he is terrified of the freeway. hell drive at the speed limit on the highway but is gripping the steering wheel for his life the whole time. at the same time drives mountain roads where theres no cars at full speed. goes through windy roads barely braking. scares the shit out of everyone in the car. never comes close to crashing despite everyone thinking they're gonna die. he drives a tiny hatchback that probably used to belong to jeff. hes the only one trusted with neils car despite not knowing how to drive stick
charlie: constantly driving over the speed limit, not looking where hes going, blasting music so loud you cant think. hes always like. i dont understand why everyone is scared to drive with me lolll and then goes 90 in a 25. for some reason. his parents bought him a jeep gladiator
knox: knox is constantly getting lost. has absoutely no sense of direction. will get lost on roads he has been on his whole life. he also forgets to use his turn signal constantly. insists on never looking at a map despite having no clue where he is for as long as possible. it is infuriating to everyone else in the car.
cam: drives a mini van. would be a decent driver if he knew how to come to a gradual stop. unfortunately he just slams the brakes like 75% of the time. he drives with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brakes which does not help. he is usually the main one driving the poets places when they're in a group since he has the most seats. when they have more than 7 someone always wants to sit in the trunk, which cam is vehemently against. he's generally just very tense while driving.
pitts + meeks: pitts drives an old truck, a smaller one that only has jump seats in the back. meeks doesnt have a license so pitts drives him everywhere. because of this if anyone wants pitts to drive them anywhere they either have to take the jump seat or sit in the bed cause meeks automatically gets the passenger seat. as far as everything else goes pitts is ok ish at driving, if kind of jerky, it mostly just sucks to get a ride from him cause he doesn't really have any room. meeks doesn't really want to get a license for several reasons and since he is conveniently always with pitts he has decided he just won't for as long as possible. ideally he never will, and will just use public transit if pitts isn't there.
