1️⃣ The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas (YA fic)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️

▫️This was such a well written book. And I loved the voice of the main character. Her personality came out very well in the writing. I liked everything about this book from the writing to the characters to the relationships and interactions of different characters. It also did a great job of conveying the scariness of the situation it was dealing with.

2️⃣ The Seven Necessary Sins of Women and Girls by Mona Eltahawy (Non-fiction)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

▫️This book took me a few months to get through but it was worth sticking to. I loved this book and I am glad I read it. It is tremendously well-researched and is full of both statistics and rage. A must-read.

3️⃣ What You Are Looking for is in the Library by Michiko Aoyama, translated by Alison Watts (Contemporary)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

▫️This was a calming read with a lot of insights about career struggles wrapped in a collection of short stories.

4️⃣ Check and Mate by Ali Hazelwood (YA Romance)

⭐️⭐️⭐️

▫️While I had more or less enjoyed The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain, this one was not as enjoyable for me. The 3rd act conflict at about 75-80% really affected my enjoyment. However, I did learn a thing or two about chess that I didn't know before.

5️⃣ Dark Tempest by Annette Marie (YA fantasy romance)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

▫️This was my audiobook read of May. While I didn't enjoy Red Winter as much as I had expected to, I did enjoy the second book of the trilogy a little more.

Reacting to you having a Tiny Version of them ! A/n: me with my mini joseph running around everywhere in the match also this is another old headcanon.

Jack: You recently just bought the mini Jack because it was so adorable. During a match, you were decoding as the mini Jack played around your feet You were doing your best to not step on him and if you did you’d probably never forgive yourself. Your heart started to glow purple alerting you the hunter was near. Quickly running you might’ve accidentally kicked the mini baby. You literally stopped mid kite and abandon everything to tend to the baby. Jack stood behind you as you tend to it and now he kinda felt jealous. He wanted affection too. He swooped you and carried you through the entire match regardless how many times you told him to put you down. He’s not letting you down until you give him the exact same attention like the mini him.

Wu Chang: Beginning of the match you were running to a cipher until you felt a slight tug on your bottoms. You looked down to the Mini Fan. Mini Fan wanted to play, you told him that you can’t it’s match time. Mini Fan became fussy and decided to initiate a game of Tag. You couldn’t even decide anymore you were too busy chasing the tiny Fan. Why was the version of him so fast. Conveniently you actually literally ran by Wu Chang himself the twin being B'ian. Curious he was and followed. You finally caught the Mini Fan as it cornered himself next to barrels. Once you turned around you came face to face with B'ian. Was he swooned over the Mini Fan. Yes, yes he was. He practically stole them from you. Your attempts to get them back was failed as he was holding you back with his umbrella. Well looks like you won’t be getting your Mini Wu Chang back anytime soon.

Hastur: Does he care? Yes and no. You were literally playing with the little Hastur out in the open. At first he didn’t even quite care but after he a while I guess he slowly got jealous and just immediately terrorshocked you.

Did you immediately start teasing him and calling jealous? Yes , yes you did. Did he ignore you? Yes , he did he refuse to accept he got jealous over a dumb small version of him.

Michiko: The sweet little geisha was walking around looking for a survivor until she placed her eyes on you with your back turned. She immediately dashed towards you but stopped as she saw the Mini Geisha dashing towards her as if she trying to protect you. She stared at the Mini Geisha attempts to protect you. She immediately fell in love with it and bent down started to play with it. Whew close call for you.

Dumb hc I have for Lucky Guy. Since my guy like boxes and shown to be a bit of having a creative side. I think he likes to do some paper craft. Like make mini box forts or mini paper versions of survivors and hunters at his free time, maybe hanging out with Michiko, Edgar and Robbie doing paper origami, paper airplanes and the weird abomination that Edgar makes that he calls “art”. Though it seems light hearted, I feel that he makes these paper craft so he can try to remember the faces of his old friends that have been fallen in his manor which he will hid away for personal reasons. Is it ooc, probs but it’s fun to burn the kitchen with goofy hcs that I have in store.

Also Lucky is true icon that he seems to be the only one with two dresses. Two dresses is not much but it’s funny that it happens twice. -📦

If that man isn't a theatre kid he's got to be an art kid. Or both (delusional)

How much did your senior prom dress cost you? Not much, I think it was just around 5k? My school even imposed a maximum amount we should only spend on the dress, and had each of us show the receipts for it to prove we didn't go over. Quite controlling, but honestly also made sense considering not everyone was well off so I don't mind it in retrospect.

What was the last thing that disappointed you? Uhh very minor but I was looking forward to learning from this mini documentary I found on YouTube only for it to have commentary/a clear bias right off the bat.

Do you like the feeling in your stomach on a big drop on a roller coaster? It's the worst. I experienced it once when I gave the Singapore Universal Studios kiddie rollercoaster a chance – never rode one again, lol.

What computer game did you used to play all the time? That bartender game where you had to mix drinks, only for the dude to hate like 99.9% of the mixes.

When was the last time you read a book? Around a month ago when Drew had me read this leadership self-help book.

Would you allow your children to date prior to 16? (assuming you want any) That's fine. What I'd prioritize above all is communication, so it would be great if they can open up to me about this sort of thing so that I could at least help where I'm needed.

What is something you gave up on after many failed attempts? Writing stories.

Do you watch political shows? I've only seen The Crown. Generally, I find the genre interesting but just never have the time to watch any of them.

Do you like salami? Not really.

When was the last time you ate meat? This evening, alongside spicy Chapaguri noodles. So spicy my tummy has been feeling like its own ring of fire the whole evening :( I have milk now which is helping, but the burning sensation is yet to go away completely.

What was the last hot drink you drank? I can't remember. I usually skip on hot drinks because I do not find the 'hot' in hot drinks enjoyable.

Have your parents met your boyfriend/exes? Yes.

How about your boyfriend’s parents? Met them? Yes, we were legal with her parents too.

Do you know how to say I love you in at least 4 languages? I love you, te amo, saranghaeyo, mahal kita.

Do you find the sound of a cat’s purr relaxing? Yes!!! I will admit I never really knew or bothered to learn the ~science behind purring, then we got Max who purrs like 80% of the time and it's one of my favorite things to listen to.

Would you ever want to be famous? If so, for what? The most I'd ask for is to be associated with someone famous, like being their best friend or whatever lol. I wouldn't want to be the famous person myself.

72 Jam @ Wakayama - # 1

Lima tahun tak menengok Soca, Wakayama –tempat dia tinggal dan bekerja sejak 2016—banyak berubah. 

Tahun 2014, pertama kali ke Wakayama, menjenguknya saat ia mengambil kuliah dua semester di sini, saya dan bapaknya menginap di hotel Daiichi dekat stasiun JR. Bisa ditempuh dengan jalan kaki dalam jarak super pendek. Tak jauh dari hotel tempat menginap, di sudut jalan, ada toko yang menjual segala macam mesin jahit. Dari yang modern sampai antik. Penjaganya seorang bapak, duduk di sudut toko. Ia selalu menunduk, mengerjakan sesuatu. 

Lalu di dekatnya ada toko yang penuh sesak dengan deretan bahan dan kimono yang sudan jadi. Bergantung di sana sini, tumpuk menumpuk. Tetapi yang paling menarik buat saya dari toko ini adalah dua bak besar berisi kimono dengan harga obral gembira. Di situ saya menemukan satu kimono warna merah terang untuk dibawa pulang. 

Di seberang jalan, ada sebuah kedai kopi yang juga menjual perabot dari kayu. Kedai ini bergaya modern, ruangnya diisi tanaman, dan bagian belakangnya menghadap sungai. Lampunya ditata di tempat-tempat strategis. Buat foto-foto di Instagram, bagus sekali. 

Oh, waktu itu, di stasiun kereta Nankai ada department store Takashimaya. Jangan samakan dengan Takashimaya di Tokyo atau Singapura. Yang ini kecil saja. Isinya barang keperluan sehari-hari, bahan makanan dan masak-memasak, sebaris perangkat tata rias, selorong baju. Sudah. Soca bilang, harga bahan makanan di situ tidak terlalu mahal, tak murah juga. Ada yang lebih murah di tempat lain, tetapi letaknya lumayan. Jadi kalau ditambah ongkos, sudahlah, belanja di mini Takashimaya ini saja. 

Di kunjungan kali ini, toko mesin jahit sudah tutup. Bapak pemilik toko masih tinggal di sana, tapi sudah tak jualan lagi. Kata Soca, itu hal yang sangat biasa terjadi di Wakayama. Pemilik sudah lanjut usia, lelah, sementara anak atau cucu tak ingin melanjutkan usaha keluarga. Lalu toko kimono, sudah benar-benar lenyap. Berubah jadi lahan parkir. Sedangkan kedai kopi yang menghadap sungai, yang waktu kami datangi dulu tak tahu bahwa kopi mandaeling berasal Sumatra, Indonesia itu, sekarang lantai atasnya jadi bar , sementara lantai bawah jadi tempat display jualan perabot (yang kata Soca harganya agak mahal). 

Covid 19 membuat banyak perubahan di Wakayama. Banyak toko, kedai, restoran, tutup. Tetapi banyak juga yang bertahan, Berjaya. Dan yang  baru pun bermunculan. 

Seperti Papermoon, toko baju milik Ibu Michiko yang saya temukan sejak tahun 2016. Sampai sekarang masih ada! Koleksi bajunya masih seperti dulu: serba katun dengan cutting yang sederhana, tapi enak banget di badan. Saya mampir ke sana, dan langsung jatuh cinta pada outer dengan hoodie warna hitam. Ya, langsung saya bawa pulang, dong. Dan seperti yang pada pertemuan kami sebelumnya, Ibu Michiko pastiiiiiii menjamu. Ia menyiapkan ice coffee dengan susu dan gula yang terpisah. Tak lupa menyelipkan hadiah. Kali ini 3 helai handuk wajah aneka warna. Ah, Michiko San....

Ada kedai udon di ujung Lorong Kitabura, tempat Soca tinggal. Sejak dulu, sampai sekarang, tetap ramai. Tadi siang, sebelum balik ke Jakarta, saya berniat makan siang di sana. Wah, penuh. Saya putuskan untuk jalan-jalan sedikit, lalu kembali lagi. Eh, salah besar: yang antri tak berkurang, malah nambah jadi 20 orang. Laris manis, Kak. 

Favorite Coffee, yang buka beberapa bulan sebelum Covid, ternyata tetap bertahan. Kedai kopi kesayangan Soca ini terkenal dengan apple pie yang dibuat langsung di dapurnya, dengan potongan apel besar-besar. Ampun enaknya! Oh, dia juga terkenal akan lemonade dan ginger ale buatan sendiri. Saya beruntung bisa menikmati apple pie dan ginger ale-nya. Memang juara. 

Tetapi yang paling juara dari semua itu adalah bagaimana pemerintah daerah Wakayama mengubah beberapa sudut kotanya. Takashimaya mini itu, sudah tak ada lagi, berganti dengan PERPUSTAKAAN 3 lantai: Wakayama Civic Library. 

Lantai dasar diisi oleh TOKO BUKU dan kedai kopi asal Amerika. Selain buku yang boanyak (90% berbahasa Jepang), ada juga alat tulis dan suvenir yang bikin hati tergoda habis-habisa. Belum lagi majalahnya yang cakep-cakep dengan bonus hadiah lucu-lucu. Bahaya!  

Lantai 2, yang didahului oleh mezzanine dengan deretan rak buku yang dipilih khusus sehingga menghasilkan “motif” di dinding, ada perpustakaan yang dilengkapi dengan ruang baca dan ruang kerja. Saya mampir ke sana pukul 7 malam, sebagian besar ruangan terisi oleh murid SD sampai SMA. Usai jam sekolah, mereka ke perpustakaan untuk bikin PR. Setelah selesai baru pulang ke rumah. 

Di lantai 3, Kembali rak-rak buku memenuhi ruang. Ada bangku-bangku besar, lebar dan empuk. Yang mau baca sambil goler-goler di situ, boleh. Tetapi yang perlu ruang kerja tenang, tak berisik, bisa juga. Di lantai ini, saya bertemu banyak mahasiswa yang duduk menghadap buku-buku tebal terbuka. Mungkin sedang bikin skripsi. 

Juara gedung perpustakaan ini ada di lantai 4: perpustakaan khusus untuk anak. Jangan ditanya koleksinya! Bikin panik! Selain itu ada ruang khusus untuk bercerita, bikin acara, ruang bermain, day care. Buat pengunjung yang tak mau meninggalkan perpustakaan karena PR belum selesai, sementara perut lapar, bisa mampir ke ruang makan di lantai 4 ini.

Selain perpustakaan, Wakayama sekarang punya gedung pertemuan yang bisa digunakan sebagai tempat konser, dan berbagai kegiatan kreatif lainnya. Terserah deh maunya apa. Namanya Wakaura Art Cube. Tak jauh dari kastil Wakayama. 

Dan kastil! Ah, ini juga seru. Malah sekarang ada perkembangan menarik di sana. Tapi itu saya ceritakan di bagian berikut, ya. 

Wakayama, tak jauh dari Osaka, tetapi mungkin teman-teman kurang mengenalnya. Begitu pun saya. Kalau bukan karena Soca yang memilih menetap dan bekerja di sini, saya tak akan tahu apa-apa tentang Wakayama. Tetapi setelah datang beberapa kali, buat saya, kota ini cantik, asri, dan tenang. Bebas hiruk-pikuk. Penduduknya ramah sekali.

Untuk semua yang ia miliki: saya suka. Dan mungkin itu yang membuat Soca betah di sini.

Thoughts:

Slice of Life anime,with light hearted comedy about the every day life of a highschool girl who works in her family's mochi shop.Very pleasant show to have in the backround,I did so while crocheting.Cute animation,doesn't deviate much from your classic anime.Heartwarming messages about community,found family,love and working together throughought every day challenges.Bonus points for queer represantation as the show has one of the main side characters as a canonically bisexual girl who, most probably at one point or another if not the entire show harbours feelings for our main character.Also the inclusion of a much insinuated trans woman.It can get a bit repetitive at times,as there are no major plot twists.The only downside to this mini series I recall after watching was unfortunately the use of a few slightly racist charicatures of two body guards in the last episodes,whom are supposedly from a tropical island whilst other dark skinned characters are normally portrayed in the style the anime posseses...

There is also the movie "Tamako Love story" that revolves around the "will they won't they" main couple of the series.Pleasant and honestly adorable teen love story with a happy ending.Also a nice suprise to see some moments of all the pre established characters growing,developing and evolving,past their fears and facing life's challenges head on.
