"I don't know how much time we have left, Veena."

Veena raised herself from the sofa. It was, what, three in the morning? June felt bad that Veena was staying here - did she feel like she had to? Because although June wanted her to be there, needed her to be there, she couldn't help wondering if Veena didn't want to be here.

Veena's groggy voice broke the spiral of thoughts running through June's mind.

"We have time, June. Yes, your mom's missing, but we'll find her, okay? They have the search parties and the police being sent all around town."

"It's not just that." June got up from her desk chair, legs feeling like lead. She'd been sitting there for at least ten hours, and it showed. There were bags under her eyes, deep, dark crevices. She walked to the couch in the darkness, and sat down next to Veena. "You know what's been going on online. The first thing I saw today when I opened my phone was a notification about an hour-long video detailing some random middle-aged man's theory that my mother and I conspired for an internet-viral story. And I don't trust the search parties either. I have to be in control, Veena. But I can't. My mother is probably dead in a ditch somewhere and there's nothing I can do about it."

"June--"

"I have to go."

"June, it's three in the morning. You're exhausted."

"But-" June stood up and started pacing around the room, heart thumping so loudly she could hear it in her ears. "I have to know what's happening. I can't just leave a group of people who know nothing about my mom to find her."

But what if she didn't know anything either?

Because she knew her mom had lied about her identity for so long. What else could she have lied about?

June's chest tightened. Her heart continued to pound, thrumming against her ribcage.

"Veena-"

"June, please, just...are you okay?"

June could barely hear her. Her heart was going to explode out of her chest. She couldn't breathe. She sat back down on the sofa, clutching her chest with a trembling hand. What was happening? Oh God, she was going to die. She was going to die before she could find her mom.

"June. June! What's wrong?" said Veena. But June couldn't answer. Instead, she responded by grabbing Veena's hand tightly, quietly sobbing between heavy breaths, tears running down her face.

Veena went quiet, a look of realisation on her face. June felt Veena's gentle fingers tracing circles around the top of her hand. Then Veena spoke again.

"Look at me. Breathe, okay? Can you-can you do that?"

June looked up, and she tried. She focused on Veena's voice, and slowly, gradually, her breaths grew less rapid. Her heart was still beating a little too fast for her liking, but she felt a bit better, enough to stop panicking, at least.

Then she pulled Veena into a hug. The warmth of Veena's body calmed her.

Veena's arms wrapped around June, and the two just sat there in comfortable silence for minutes. Then June broke it.

"Sorry about that." she said.

Veena pulled back and kissed June on the forehead. "For what? You have nothing to be sorry about."

June blushed. Had that really just happened? "Um...I still want to go with the search party."

Veena sighed. "Well, at least let me come with you, then."

June smiled. "Okay."
