I've been in love with Remus Lupin since I met him aged 14 and in love with Sirius Black since I started writing fanfiction about him.

But it's always struck me that they're not real and they came from the imagination of JKR - so am I actually just a little bit in love with JKR? (I mean... yes) and it always strikes me that they're not really men, are they? If they came from the imagination of a woman?

But it's got me thinking about other male characters, the great lovers in literature who real women all fall a bit in love with:

The cads with a heart of gold like Rhett Butler

The brooding byronic heroes with dark pasts but they love one woman so much and she can fix him (or not) Heathcliff, Rochester, Maxim De Winter

The no good ones that you have to let go but it hurts so much because god you wish you could fix him like Willoughby

And the straight up good guys; Darcy, Colonel Brandon, Gilbert Blythe and - yes - Remus and Sirius

They were all written by women

All of them. Even total creepers like Lestadt and Louis, if that's what floats your boat. Women.

Over on the marauders fandom some of the women there are getting heavily into two book series: All For the Game and The Raven Cycle. Their casts are heavily skewed male, and the real women are falling in love with and fangirling over all of them. But guess who they were written by?

Women.

Maybe it shouldn't come as a surprise that it is women who write the sort of men that other women fall in love with.

But I can't think of a single male character written by a man that I've ever felt even the faintest flicker of attraction to.

And that's a bit depressing, because it makes me realise that the sort of man I want, the male halves of these great romances or just nice dudes, are not what men are. They are what women want them to be.

A real man is not capable of being Mr. Darcy. He is not even capable of imagining him.

It takes a woman to invent a man worth loving.

I do very much enjoy this scene - it is after all the beginning of their relationship - as a result I had to draw it! (It was clearly not an excuse to draw furniture).
