My Faulty Memory of How the Throne Room Scene Ended, Long Version Luke Skywalker: And another thing, you should be ashamed at how poorly you treat a galactic princess. Forcing her to dress in that degrading outfit in front of everyone! Jabba the Hutt (translated): What!? Nobody forced her. In fact, she's the one who picked it out! Luke Skywalker: I've heard a lot of justifications from bad guys recently, but this one beats them all! Jabba the Hutt: No really, she basically designed it herself! She was very fussy about the details, down to the matching unbreakable chain. Luke Skywalker: The sweet princess I know would never debase herself to this level of lewdness. Princess Leia: Look here, short, dark and judgy! You should have seen the wardrobe of fashion horrors I had to work with in this dungeon. There was even a muumuu big enough for a Gamorrean guard! Luke Skywalker: But why would you insist on an unbreakable chain that would keep you trapped here? Princess Leia: Oh, you can be sure I'm not planning on using it for any specific purpose in the near future [glares in frustration at Luke]. absolutely fascinated by young dee who is criminally under-discussed so here is my dissertation on what happened in her college years (ft. dr. gainer, setting her roommate on fire, being institutionalized)/my idea for a fic that I will almost certainly never write/my way too serious take on a few throwaway dee lore lines

timeline background: we know that dee majored in psychology ('charlie got molested') and got "three fourths" of the way in (meanwhile dennis finished his psych minor.) assuming this was a four year program, I'm gonna guess that in her third year she got institutionalized and most likely had to drop out ('gun fever too: still hot'.) we also know that she had her back brace until she was twenty ('underage drinking'), so I'm guessing that means she got her back brace off in her third year.

we know that dennis fancied himself a psychologist since he was young, but I think dee did too. in particular I think she was wary and interested in her brother's psychology; she seems very aware of his psychopathy and bpd in 'making dennis reynolds a murderer' and 'psycho pete returns.' in my head she's been interested in dennis' psychology since they were kids and she saw him snapping crows necks. so instead of forcing her way into acting school, she studied psychology to better understand her brother (and also deep down, herself, who is very much the other side of the same fucked up coin.) it also meant she could tell herself she could study her characters even better when she became an actress.

i think she put in (her version of) genuine academic effort to get in, fuelled kind of by spite (remember the way she studied that thick medical book in 'hero or hate crime' or her very quick math in 'boggs: ladies reboot'). she studies books and gets cricket to quiz her and she still fails to get into penn. but frank always pitied her (i think she was his favorite of the twins-remember "let your sister into the gang", "that's my girl!", "i'm sorry the grift didn't work out, sweetie") so he shells out cash to get her in, but also to get her away from home so he has to deal with her even less.

dennis wants to do anything dee does but better and he wants to keep her close by (to watch her crash and burn, and also because he's weirdly possessive-see 'the gang broke dee' "i'm your select!"). and obviously he's barbara's favorite. so barbara gives him money to get in too. she also gets him into a frat and pays for his classes and his rent and everything he needs. dee has to live in a dumpy dorm with a female roommate.

but college presents dee a chance to moult her previous place in life where she was known as a monster (remember how insistent she was that "people can change!" in 'franks pretty woman'. I think dees always wanted to believe she can shed that feeling she's inferior, but she never has). in my head her female roommate is basically normal-has real friends of her own, mentally stable, attractive-which is exactly what dee craves. dee wants to be popular and well liked and she wants to infiltrate her roommates life, imitate her, be in the Cool group. and she places all her hopes on a friendship with the roommate but dee has never navigated real female friendships before, not with someone like her. deep down she also wishes she found what dennis found in mac, whatever it was, because ever since dennis met mac he's never been as close to her. and i do think dee is some flavor of queer. and the roommate is well liked in the way that dee admires and envies. so there is that blurriness between wanting to be her and wanting to be with her. in my head her roommate looks like the woman from dee's fantasy in 'the gang saves the day' (and they both represent that promise of escape from dee's shitty life).

dee is so desperate for the roommates approval and her love and her life that she goes insane, copying and flattering and competing with her. ever the shitty actress, she tries to emulate her, but comes off as manic and creepy. and maybe her roommate is nice enough to not completely shun her, recognizing that she's struggling. maybe in dees mind they actually are becoming friends when her roommate asks things like "are you okay?"

and dee has to talk about her plan with dennis because he's the only person who would Get It. and she makes it sound like it's almost working. dennis feels jealous and worried and threatened that maybe dee might actually be seen as normal, especially when she gets her back brace off in the third year. so dennis fucks her roommate, more of a show that he owns and controls each and every pathetic part of dee’s life than anything else. and so that dee knows she'll never be as good as him, she'll never as easily charm people as dennis does. (or at least he tells her he does).

to prove that To Someone dee is Good Enough, and so desperate for attention, dee (who's been groomed all this time) enters a sexual relationship with her professor dr. gainer. she tells herself she has the power in it, that she seduced him ("he didn't molest me. i had sex with him 'cause i wanted to.") and she has a mental break, because the thing she told herself held her back from being loved (her back brace) is finally gone by now and yet she still feels like a monster, and the only scrap of "love" she can get is from her professor.

and then she can't take the fact that she can steal her roommates clothes, can emulate her sexual prowess (in dee's own fucked up, delusional way), and still neither be well liked like her nor be loved by her. so maybe dee will always be a monster. so dee tried to burn her roommate in her bed, because she represented the promise of change and popularity, and that promise was a lie and dee's effort was for nothing. and she's institutionalized.

and i think there was kind of a falling out between the twins and their parents, because barbara wants to abandon dee but dennis can't help but visit her. and frank doesn't even step foot in a place that reminds him of his traumatic childhood, and avoids dee even more than he used to because she is his childhood mirror image. so the family becomes even more fractured and estranged.

and maybe dee becomes medicated and slowly crawls her way halfway to normal by the first season (her acting classes are so well-adjusted, taking part in healthy hobbies of her!). until her father comes back into her life and everything falls apart <3

side note, even though dee is crushingly lonely-"I just got a cat 'cause I wanted something to hang out with. I don't have, you know, a roommate or anything, and I don't really have anyone to talk to..."-AND she struggles to pay rent whenever frank cuts her off, i hc that she refused to ever get a roommate in particular female roommate again after this because both her internalized misogyny got worse and she was afraid of what would happen (what she would do) again.

im completely talking out of my ass and there is no real evidence for this but i feel like the severe lack of silco and jinx in season 2 is in part due to audience reaction of season one

i remember after the first season came out that people who worked on the show had to clarify that there was no intention to imply jinx and silco sexually. and i know its a ship (go have ur fun im not judging) but i remember people being upset at some of their intimacy and calling it odd and calling silco a groomer. so the fact that one of them had to clarify the father daughter intention-a part of me thinks they got scared or something and didn't want to go deeper into their relationship. i thought we'd flashbacks or further insight to the years we didnt see but theres none of that. just jinx hallucinating silco saying the only way out is to die...which is certainly something

A Small Discrepancy about Cheng Xiaoshi's powers

I think I'm gonna go insane. I just realized something. Lu Guang actually got the wrong conclusion on what triggers Cheng Xiaoshi's ability (it's reasonable why he gets it wrong, but it still pisses me off 😭)

The trigger for Cheng Xiaoshi's powers isn't for the photo to be in his sight. Not strictly.

Otherwise, he shouldn't have been able to dive out from point A to point B.

From what we've seen from this intro, the only photo that would thematically make sense for Cheng Xiaoshi to have dived into and out from would be this photo. And it would have never been in Cheng Xiaoshi's line of sight.

And the actual scene where Cheng Xiaoshi "activates" his ability for the first time actually doubles down on this. (I watched this slow-mo. Cheng Xiaoshi closes his eyes at the same moment he claps).

And even then Cheng Xiaoshi was never looking at the photo, he was looking at Lu Guang. Lu Guang had let his guard down and never would've been able to confirm what exactly Cheng Xiaoshi was doing before the clap. You could argue it was in his line of sight but if multiple photos were in his line of sight, which photo would theoretically make the most sense for Cheng Xiaoshi to dive into?

Would it be far-fetched to consider that during this sequence from season 1, Cheng Xiaoshi had subconsciously took advantage of the unrealized truth that his ability's trigger is more multi-faceted than simply being sight-based?

Also considering that he's the one that does the manual process of developing these photos, it's almost poetic that his connection to them is cemented in his memories of these snapshots. Sight simply assists in snapping it into his immediate thoughts.

So, when Lu Guang gets Cheng Xiaoshi to recreate the sequence of events, Cheng Xiaoshi fixates too hard on the photo and blatantly stares at it. So, Lu Guang would understandably come to the observed conclusion that it's triggered by sight and a clap.

You can't necessarily disprove that it's from simply thinking of the photo, because just looking at a photo will count as thinking of the photo. So, Cheng Xiaoshi's true ability is jumping into photos he immediately thinks of. He'd probably need a good recollection of the photo for it to work without seeing it.

This is why Cheng Xiaoshi was able to dive from seemingly nothing in Yingdu episode 1.

He had thought of the photo depicting the trio after commemorating Lu Guang joining the studio -- of course it's significant enough of a memory that Cheng Xiaoshi would reliably be able to recall it.

[If anyone happens to know if this photo definitively depicts Cheng Xiaoshi with the bandages from his head injury, I would be so grateful]

This version of Cheng Xiaoshi might have learned the actual trigger behind his powers. And either Lu Guang has never figured this out himself, or is careful not to let Cheng Xiaoshi learn the extent of his abilities until the "right" moments.

It also kinda fits with Lu Guang's limitations. Lu Guang activates his powers while looking at a photos to gain its memories. Cheng Xiaoshi can use his memories of photos to enhance the utility of his powers.

There's probably more to Lu Guang's ability than meets the eye, but I haven't cracked that case yet.

Doctor Who featured a Pro-EU episode all the way back in the 1970s, before it was even called the EU. The show as a whole arguably always has been "woke".

Sci-Fi in general is frequently and repeatedly a conveyance of political and social messaging to the point it's basically essential to the genre. The first Sci-Fi story, Frankenstein, was quite literally about a narrow-minded populous misinterpreting something they were unfamiliar with as monsterous, and the creature's right to happiness as a living being. The genre as a whole arguably always has been "woke".

Atleast in modern day, Doctor Who has the budget to convey these ideas with some visual flair, and not as the one-take practically as-live affair it was in the 60s...

I feel like I get more and more pissed off anytime I watch q!Bad make a move. So here’s the rant after seeing the clip and following with what @/daisyychainssj said about Leo’s Ninho room:

Why on god’s green earth would he allow Bagi into Leo’s room and allow her to grab the warp into the room.

Yeah maybe it was to do with the size of the room but maybe they could have you know waited and asked to check Richas’ room or waited until her parent or Leo was online.

He also knows full well that there is hollow walls inside the Ninho that could be turned into unofficial/temporary rooms for those eggs and that Leo’s room doesn’t have to be touched at all.

But also since he remembers enough about the Ninho and how it works with his memory loss then he goddamn knows the significance of those rooms and he just broke the main fucking rule.

Which is that the ninho rooms are SAFE SPACES FOR THE EGG THAT OWNS THE ROOM, that ONLY the egg, their parents and TRUSTED individuals can reach.

Do Leo and Bagi know each other?? Hmm that’s looking like a solid no. How well does Leo know the new eggs? Wait they don’t know and neither does Leo because they just recently met. Do they forget Leo is shy and not always social? yes she trust the eggs she knows but how often does she get online for anyone but her family?? Looking like about 5% which is usually because Foolish or Roier have outside factors stopping them from taking care of her.

Also he’s not her parent, he doesn’t get to make decisions for Leo just because he took care of her like 2 or 3 times and he knows her parent. That’s stupid and demeans Foolish’s parenting.

In conclusion, Bad should have never stepped foot in Leo’s room with Bagi today. It makes no sense lore wise or even just him showing her. Despite his “respect” for all the eggs, he really needs to check himself first before he does anything. Because any time he’s messed with an eggs stuff it’s always been Leo and sorry but Leo isn’t Foolish. That dynamic should be keep completely separate and to say this isn’t disrespect is a lie because it is.

This isn’t even like bad roleplay anymore it’s just disrespect because how in lore will any of them know about it unless bagi uses it in front of them.

Gilded Age Impression

I need to go back and rewatch things carefully, but I kinda have this mental impression that Oscar is a bit.......food motivated? Like, if there is food or drink in the vicinity, the boy has it in his hand and is sipping or crunching. Of course, the only actual time I clearly remember this in any faintly-comment-worthy manner (ie: he's not at a meal or having a drink after getting home, etc.) is in season two when he comes for tea right after George is finished with him and they bring in the cake and he is immediately kind of "YAY CAKE!" and honestly that could just be Comfort Food.
