A More Specific Hearing Poll
Put on OVER THE EAR headphones, turn off background noises if possible, and go to this link.

Press play, press "Z" to turn the noise to zero, and then test the sliders individually.

Showing some love for a website that deserves to be more widely known. MyNoise has been good to me for YEARS. Free for limited use, pay $10 (or more if you want) for full use forever. This guy does his own high-quality recording on location and each of hundreds of soundscapes has sliders to tweak to your liking, plus you can layer them, save settings, etc. The phone app is also awesome.
Good for studying, sleeping, tinnitus, writing/art inspo, you have no idea how much good stuff there is on this site.
I post now b/c this creator has been holding out against the awfulization of the internet by keeping costs low and resisting commercialization. Please check it out, use it, contribute if you can/want to, and reblog/share this post!

Because there's A Lot going on right now, sometimes its nice to have some adjustable noise of your choosing, resonating in the background.
Lately my favorite mixture over at myNoise generators have been Twin Black Lodges (news about David Lynch reminded me about the generator) and mixing it with White Rain and/or Fireplace, but they have a HUGE index of all sorts of atmospheric sounds you can tweak and layer~

I know I just reblogged a post about mynoise.net a couple of days ago, but I need you to know that they have:
a cat purring
a shepard tone (lol the site warns you the sound can in fact make you feel AWFUL, anyway I love shepard tones but I admit I don't want to sit and listen to them)
glacier lagoon, which to my utter DELIGHT was in fact recorded in Iceland :D (Oh hey! Another sound recorded in Iceland, this time of steam vents! And another of boiling mud pots! Also he took some really fantastic photos of the spots where he recorded)
separate listings for US fishtanks and EU fishtanks because the buzzing sound of the air and water pumps depends on your electrical current?! TIL (and sure enough, the US one sounds familiar and the EU one doesn't!)
this is in fact what it sounds like to visit a big old church ;_; (and you can turn on the organ sounds or even the priest lol)
a bunch of voices literally babbling in your ear, to block the sound of other people talking
another one of people babbling, but not so close to you
sad minstrel (the sounds of a medieval town square, with someone sort of sadly noodling around on his string instrument)
rain on a tent, which I fall asleep to nearly every night (and I have adjusted and saved the settings so it sounds like rain on a specific tent I've slept in a LOT)
literally just a fan
anyway I also need you to know they have an app, and when I was on the Camino I slept to either rain sounds or ocean sounds every night--playing that through bluetooth earbuds blocked snoring even better than my fancy earplugs did

Dr. Pigeon’s work marries vibrant creativity with a deep sense of service. Each of his soundscapes is an interactive work of art that inspires, consoles, clarifies, heals.
He is recovering from Guillain-Barré Syndrome, and he recently created this generative drone to communicate some of his experiences.
Try his work; it’s free. If you’re in position, consider making a donation. I send him a few bucks a month, as a gesture of respect, appreciation, and awe.

In your heart, you once carried what you believed was a piece of truth, given to you in love. Insatiable curiosity and hard experience eventually taught you it was only an image, though, and some days it looks stranger and more distant than ever.
You grieve a little over the loss of its simple certainty, but nothing could replace the wonder at what you've begun to see now that you have let it go.

I reblogged this post last night, and I just wanted to update and say I paid up today. I have never got on with these kinds of apps before, the sounds always just end up putting me off, or I could hear where they were looped... it was just always something.
I got to try this for free on their website. I was sitting in bed listening to the Mediterranean Garden and reading my fics and blocking out the noise of the new neighbour upstairs snoring his damn head off. Then I started to get sleepy. So I put the iPad away, but of course then the sounds stop, so I downloaded the app... and I drifted off to sleep so quickly, even with my big ol' headphones on my head. I really struggle falling asleep, so this was a big deal!
All that to say, read the post I linked above, try the site if you are so inclined and drop the dude some dollars if you can afford it.
*Japanese Water Garden and Irish Coast are also awesome, but I have so many more to explore.

Speaking of sensory overload - I like to plug this app called myNoise, created by one dude running around the globe and sampling various hums, whooshes and pitter patters, totally free and incredibly helpful for people like me. Do check it out.

I've been obsessed with MyNoise lately and I love how the community index has the holy trinity -- Cyberpunk City, Steampunk City, and Solarpunk City. Idk something about it makes me happy

I think this is the kind of thing mynoise.net excels at

I made a quick custom generator but there are so many sounds to play around with you can probably put together something much better in like 5mins :3 It's freemium but it only costs like $5 or $10 once, no subscription.

please please someone make an asmr/ambience audio of like, sleeping in a mech cockpit and u can hear a gentle hum of the engine in standby mode and the muffled sounds of engineers working outside in the hangar

You want some ambient noise that makes you feel like you're riding a dragon or griffin?
The link should load the proper preset, but if it doesn't, it's the "Flapping Wings" one. Love this website. I was writing while listening to a preset of "Examination Time" the other day, and it was working for me (I have to turn off any human noise like coughing, though).

I TOTALLY get this. After travelling in an RV through my high school years and sleeping next to a maintenance hatch on a Coast Guard cutter in my early 20s, I've always found engine and vehicle sounds soothing. I never sleep more soundly than in a moving vehicle.
With that in mind, let me point you to MyNoise. The site has a wide range of "soundscape generators" that you can tweak to your heart's content, ranging from abstract tonal generators to wildlife environments to industrial sounds, and, yes, Starship Background Noise simulators. Because they're sound generators instead of just recordings, you can let them run as long as you like.
On weekend mornings, I often throw on a mix of shipboard and industrial sounds and go back to sleep for a few hours. There are a few music generators that I often use as background when I'm working from home -- just the right amount of sound and rhythm to keep me focused.
ok so i don't like to sleep in silent rooms and i really dislike asmr so i usually put on VA compilations of whatever character I'm fond of.
but recently, i've discovered the category of really specific ambient noises on youtube, and now my recc feed is like, 60% stuff like
youtube
it's a full 8 hours. most of these are a minimum of 6
I put these on my laptop at 0% brightness overnight as I sleep
jerma voice: chat have i fucked my youtube algo to shreds

my scrobbles have been terrible these past 2 weeks bc i’ve just been listening to the factory soundscape when im at home instead of music . it helps me focus i guess but also i can fall asleep to it so it’s very useful when im at home and trying to focus on stuff or when i meed noise for sleeping that won’t make me crazy sometimes (guy who puts songs that cause him anguish in his sleep playlist)
