re: the top 5 books ask, here's what I didn't include but all of this could go on this list.

Math and Physics: Wonders of Numbers (Clifford Pickover)/Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman (Richard Feynman)/The Elegant Universe (Brian Greene) were all awards or graduation presents in middle and high school; one is a bunch of wild math puzzles, one is a (very funny) memoir of a legendary physicist; and one is an exploration of a then very hot theoretical physics theory, and it's interesting to consider how all of them shaped me.

why I as a math/physics person am also an avid meta writer:Hyperspace (Michio Kaku) and How To Write Science Fiction and Fantasy (Orson Scott Card) - Kaku is a physicist as well but writes for the layman, and Hyperspace is about extradimensional physics but also provides a huge list of fictional explorations, which is why I'm pairing it with How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy. Look I cannot vouch for Card as a person given the Mormon Homophobia but this book was absolutely formative, I read it very young (not long after Ender's Game, actually), and I do recommend pirating it because I inherited a great deal of my understanding of narratology and good writing from it, and it introduced me to some of my favorite less problematic writers. These books also serve as "introduction to a billion fucked up sf short stories I read in high school"; just copy down every fictional work they mention and read as many as you can.

Medicine, healthcare, neuroscience, and the human element: The works of Oliver Sacks/The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down (Anne Fadiman)/The Checklist Manifesto (Atul Gawande) - I think I would not have been as happy as a physician, but I also think had a few things gone slightly differently in my life (notably, having a high school bio teacher who was competent and whom I did not detest) I might have been pushed in that direction, and as I'm in other more peripheral spaces in healthcare, these are still very important books in terms of how I think.

Cookbooks: How to Cook Everything Vegetarian (Mark Bittman) and Salt Fat Acid Heat (Samin Nosrat) - I'm a pretty good cook and Bittman's is the first cookbook I owned as an adult (I am not vegetarian but I was in my first ever apartment, as I keep kosher and therefore having two sets of dishes and buying kosher meat was prohibitively expensive as a grad student, at least if I also wanted to like, go out for drinks or pizza on occasion). Salt Fat Acid Heat is much more recent but I think that's what really freed me from needing cookbooks and instead thinking about cooking more by experience.

Childhood formative books, especially in fantasy: A Barrel of Laughs, A Vale of Tears (Jules Pfeiffer)/The Phantom Tollbooth (Norton Juster)/the general works of Diana Wynne Jones, Ellen Raskin, and Elizabeth Enright. A taste for the weird/mythical/fractured fairy tales.

Teen/Adult formative books in sf: Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (Susana Clarke)/The Belgariad (David Eddings)/Wild Seed (Octavia Butler)/Old Kingdom series (Garth Nix)/I, Robot (Isaac Aasimov)/The City and the City (China Mieville) - teens and adulthood formative books in sf and fantasy. The lessons learned here, in order, respectively: find the intersection of mythology and academia and if you're doing pastiche do it impeccably; if you're not original, be funny and kind to your characters (still throw rocks at them but treat them as people); with that said be original and as weird as you fucking want; write a woman who is incredibly good at what she does and build a deeply compelling world around her; no really write a woman who is incredibly good at what she does and build a deeply compelling world around her and also stupid puns are okay; get weird, play with genre, and don't hold your audience's hand.

I'm so fucking unbelievably happy that the Drought™ has officially dried out! (I suppose Drowned out?)

I don't feel incorrect in saying that in this video, Damien and Angela are the most comfortable I've EVER seen them with each other!

Usually, they get a little stiff around each other. (both of them having issues with people liking/understanding them, so that tracks) but in this last batch of videos they've been really in-line and comfy!

(WARNING! I MIGHT BE ABSOLUTLY INSANE!) VVV

Because they have been so 'in-line' with each other recently (I've noticed it since the Fortnite Monopoly 9 days ago) I caught myself thinking if anything happened recently where they would have bonded more? did they go to something or do something recently that they would have became closer friends??

So it had me thinking about the fact they do shoot weeks, (I believe someone at Smosh said they've been doing them around the beginning of the month, give or take) and Damien's hair looks noticeably different (lil more purple-shampoo-ie) since the Fortnite video. So I believe we've entered early March's batch of videos. (this is all in theory, time wise)

And so, what was happening in beginning of March, that they both would have been at? .....

So it lines up with the assumed shooting schedule, and they definitely talked at it, so how wrong am I in saying that they got to chat and understand each other better since?

Regardless if I am right with my theories, these two have definitely gotten closer, and that's so awesome! I'm so happy and excited with what the future holds!

Imo these two are the best when they can freely make jokes to the people they trust, so having another pseudo 'Shayne' and 'Amanda' in each other is going to be great content in the future! (and more fun (for me) because they pick on each other more viciously) (I can't help but love them<3)

Wrote to a pal about barks recently & thought I'd tidy & post here too.

IMO bark/self-talk writing is a separate form to other game writing, I’d say it has more in common with poetry or song lyrics. If you're good at those you're good at barks

I also find cookbooks written by real food perverts useful ref, or sports commentary by sports perverts; anything that at its core is a description of rules attaining a mythic aspect from the writer or speaker’s love for it

Many of the great (voiced) barks fall somewhere between dialogue and sound effects. That is, what they’re saying doesn’t matter as much as how the player associates the sound with the action. (Think of how speech in 80s-90s games was often literally sampling & was deployed accordingly)

Much like poetry or lyrics sometimes you want to express sth in a way that’s amazing and has never been done before & sometimes it’s more powerful to just say the thing. Picking which is usually by feel

You have to pack the text with meaning, even more than usual. You’re setting the rhythm for how the character responds to the game - just like music is level design, combat barks are combat design, exploration barks are game design, etc

Shorter is usually better…

For instructive barks (a resource is low, taking too much damage, about to deal a lot of damage, I need healing!) always frontload. Players have to understand what they’re being told ASAP and making it characterful/writerly/flavourful comes next. Just don't forget that second pass

The old golden rule for barks was that they can’t be memorable or players will notice when they repeat. Well it’s actually OK & even desirable for players to notice repeating barks— they look forward to seeing or hearing them again!

BUT it can be a guess which lines repeat well and which lose their spark after the 50th time. This is where the ‘sound FXification’ I mentioned before can help if it’s voiced

I mean... "Watcher is a production studio that is focused on creating television-caliber, unscripted series in the digital space". A streaming service as the end goal always made sense to me - knowing full well if it happened I might not be able to pay for it.

I mean GMM has been around for over a decade but they're also a show within a production company that belongs to Mythical Entertainment. They have mythical society (which is paid), mythical kitchen, a cookbook, a cereal brand, sporked, they bought Smosh, they have annual ticketed events, they go on tour, etc. And they've chosen to remain on YouTube but because they're backed by so many other stuff.

I've seen so many people say they don't want quality content, they just want Ryan and Shane sitting in folding chairs in the dark. Well then go back to watching Unsolved. They wanna grow up in their careers and why shouldn't they get to? They left buzzfeed for a reason. If you can't see that for what it is then their content it's for you, Watcher is not for you. If you can't be happy "your favorite content creator" wants a better career for himself then just leave them alone.

Many followed Shane and Ryan to Watcher to only keep watching them, completely ignoring the fact that they have a production studio. The idea has always been to keep adding new talent. To hire other hosts. They even had to explicitly say that in yesterday's video as if it wasn't obvious already.

Guys, Shane and Ryan (and Steven) are not YouTubers. They're not David Dobrik or Cody Ko. They're creators, writers, directors, executive producers, editors (etc) of their own series on their own production company.

Now does that mean they're exempt from making financial mistakes? No, they're not. This is their first time running a company. Mistakes are always gonna be made and maybe they could've handled the news better but your response as "fans" could've been A LOT better too.
