Holy smokes! I just realized I never posted my finished illustration of Nao (from Skip & Loafer) for Beyond Your Binary! The zine itself is free, though they do ask for those who download it to send proceeds to Gaza if they are able. See my notes/comments on the project under the cut!

This was the first zine I have taken part in in a very very long time- and I'd like to think I did both the prompt and Nao justice! Below are some of the studies, concepts, n notes I made for the project!

I also ended up doing some research on current fashion trends in Japan + some popular cafes as well! The cafe I drew her in is based off of Blue Bottle Coffee in Maebashi! It looks very stylish- perfect for Nao haha! Thats all I got for now! In my Skip and Loafer re read I’ve been struck by how much Mitsumi is a product of her environment? Like I mean obvs, with Chieri’s eternal read of “You must have been raised in an environment with a lot of love” [paraphrasing] but like, it’s also in Chapter 20 right? How Mitsumi falls down a lot but is able to *pick herself back up*. When Shima doesn’t want her to get hurt we realize he’s kinda projecting his feelings about his younger self onto her, cuz he was raised in a tumultuous environment and is only now starting to learn how to want and grow.

and it’s like, so often characters (esp protagonists) are great at dealing with situations cuz of their complex and tragic backstories. And there is a point to that! It is in many ways a skill to be accustomed to dealing with the disasters of life. But also like, I enjoy that Mitsumi is a shining example of how it is kinda a superpower to have a strong and stable foundation, and how that makes her a greater presence in everyone else’s life for it. It’s not that Mitsumi doesn’t have problems, but when she does she has the ability to learn and grow without it destroying her self image. Which I think it an amazing superpower in it of itself

[skip and loafer chapter 29] something fun as i am thinking about this post again, is how sukirofa has a constant theme of "you never really realize how much effect you have had on others", and as I am rereading it's really fun to find it in other ways. Similar to how Shima doesn't realize how much his kindness affected Mitsumi (And how extraordinary that kindness was), here we're show how Mitsumi thinks of her younger self as kind of a burden to a younger Nao while musing about how Nao has been taking care of her. And immediately after we're shown Nao thinking she didn't take good enough care of Mitsumi, while remembering how Mitsumi's affection deeply affected her at a hard time in her life. (Later on we even have the chapter where Nao talks to Goro about how she feels she does too little for Mitsumi, and Goro responds by reminding her of her kindness towards Mitsumi and how it's appreciated). Something along the lines of "You never know how much you mean to someone, and they'll never know how much they mean to you. Unless you tell them."
