Tbh with how many "cranky old man" tropes uncle keicho falls into i can imagine when the kids were young they wrote down his age as 100 when handed assignments that were like "tell me about your family." Bros like 37 and going on about "back in my day", complaining about the economy, chronic back pain, needing help getting up, taking naps all day long, and just overall having a stuck up his ahh. When he says hes only two years older than okuyasu of course those little things thought he meant 200.

Family mahjong night but josuke has horrible luck, okuyasu has no idea how to play, and hyakuko has forced keicho to consume several fkmt manga.

Josuke post grad

I was inspired by @/yossarianirl (not fully tagging for the sake of notifications) posting their josuke head canons i feel like posting about my ideas especially for the nijimura au.

First off, homie definitely has adhd. School was rough for him especially with constant stand drama and trips to the hospital. A lot of people, myself included, always like to imagine josuke in the medical field, but don't really realize the grades you have to have to get into med school are lowkey insane. You gotta be at the top of your class; advanced placement classes no less. Josuke would no doubt really struggle getting those grades. Especially given the Japanese education system being notoriously cut throat.

But josuke feels like its his duty to help people and goes to med school regardless through the speedwagon foundation. They do offer him a lot of accomodations and even hook him up with tutoring and extended time to turn in work. (The spwf is disability friendly because i say so.) And after ungodly hours spent studying all those silly medical terms and such, hes able to pass and INSTANTLY goes into being a paramedic. One of the worst mistakes of his life.

My heart goes out to anyone in this position because of what you have to deal with. Josuke had thought "i can just save them with crazy diamond!" And learned his lesson way too fast. Sometimes the paramedics arrive too late, and crazy diamond can't help with strokes, heart attacks or overdoses. Theres some emergencies... You just cant help with. Mortality is an unfortunate part of being a living being. And life is incredibly fragile. The position lasts at best 1 year before josuke has an incredibly horrible week full of death. The mental toll and survivors guilt is far too much. Even with counselling hes met his limit. The dreams and nightmares are too much to bare so he has to quit. Since he didnt want his suffering through med school to go to waste he decides to become a physical therapist.

With all this said, it's no mystery that josukes a mess of an adult. Tomoko cooked almost all his meals and he has little to no adult skills other than laundry. After moving out post grad he lived off instant meals having no idea how to cook. He completely lost his appetite because of soggy freezer meals and fake food. Doubled with amounting credit card debt from retail therapy and shopping to relieve stress, to the point when hyakuko meets her fkmt fixation keicho cant help but feel kaiji seems all too familiar, he was not in good shape.

After moving in with the nijimuras however after okuyasus ex wife walked out, things got better. Living alone was not for Josuke, and with the added family members, some things get a lot easier to manage from meals, to laundry, and so on. Yeah, a 6 person family (7 including josuke) is a lot. But... Okuyasus cooking and keicho doing a fair share of the cleaning took a huge burden off him. Josuke being able to help with the kids was a HUGE help amidst okuyasu recovering from insomnia and the plethora of issues keicho lives with. Keicho helps him with paying off credit card debt and honestly, josuke wouldnt have it any other way than to be with that family.

The thing i notice nobody really mentions about disability...

Especially if youre "high functioning" and can "get everything done despite your pain" nobody really considers that despite the surface, it takes a lot out of us. Yes i can work a 40 hour week and get my chores done, but by the time im done with that i hardly have the steam left in me to clean myself or even socialize. The only reason im able to feed myself most days is cause i meal prep for this very reason. How much energy daily life can take out of folk living with disability is something i wanna see in rep. Too many times ive been called lazy when really, im doing just as you are but with a boulder tied to my back. Even if im "high functioning", i am still winded by it all much faster than an able bodied person.

I despise the "stuck in own body" trope that's extremely ableist. I hate when people insist on doing everything for disabled folk out of pitty and the such. We are human beings. We are capable of doing things on our own. All my post is calling attention to is that we are not lazy. We get worn out faster and need rest. Rest.

Anyways thinking about keicho and okuyasu running into bad financial issues between the time his wife left and josuke moving in so the kids being all excited that they get curry with DINO NUGGIES!!!!!; But its cause thats the only protien they can reasonably afford in bulk meanwhile okuyasus undergoing some fkmt visual metaphor arc around relying on energy drinks to keep him going amidst horrid insomnia he doesnt have time to book an appointment to treat. Owwwww my toeeeee!!!!!

Nijimuras during thunderstorms

After red hot chilli peppers, it goes without saying that keicho and okuyasu have endured a severely traumatic event adding to the ptsd they already suffer. But how do they cope and react?

Soon after the initial accident okuyasu had gone out and bought a bunch of outlet overs just to bring himself some peace of mind. Time to time while keicho was still in the hospital okuyasu would get very bad nightmares, unable to sleep adding to his insomnia leading to him eventually crashing at the higashikatas in the middle of the night. Not to mention laying awake with survivors guilt and needing somebody to be by him to feel a little less alone.

Upon keichos discharge from the hospital, there were also investments in blackout curtains for the nijimura household to avoid the both of them running into triggers since keichos poor mental health means his ptsd is more severe.

When triggered, okuyasu will space out and relive the event in his mind, or just keep reflecting on his survivor's guilt. It doesnt seem like much at first but nobody can get to him. Depending on how bad his episode is, he will just sit down with tears streaming down his face, silent. Helpless as the flashbacks play on and as the scenarios go on in his head. Other times when he's not fully triggered he will be anxious during a storm and will have a worse than normal inferiority complex because of intrusive thoughts and such. Because of the trauma, he can have trouble doing electrical work on cars at times, but his coworkers are more than happy to help him out.

Keicho on the other hand will have flashbacks that cause physical pain to the point he starts yelling. When a storm comes near all the blinds absolutely HAVE to be shut, hence the need for blackout curtains to steer off any flashbacks. If he catches a flash from the corner of his eyes, he gets a quick intrusive memory and lets out a quick scream and tries to go about his day. During storms he needs to make sure all sockets and unused appliances are shut off, and that all family members are safe and accounted for. He paces around anxiously trying to make sure everything's alright, and the higashikatas even call them to make sure everything's alright for them. Keicho has bad dreams every night, not always about rhcp, to the point hes numbed to them. But sometimes there will be those ones that just unsettle him and asks for okuyasu to sleep with him. Keichos paranoia from rhcp has lead to him constantly checking the weather which in turn feeds into his ocd. And no, he does not deal with static electricity well.

The best way for them to cope is to (quite obviously) keep the blinds shut during storms. As long as keicho and okuyasu are together, they'll be fine, but they need to be in some kind of "safe haven". When okuyasu spaces out, the best way to help him is to snap him out of it, ground him, and just keep him comfortable. For keicho, just avoid triggering him in the first place, and maybe even give him some music to listen to. Even though the nijimuras trauma is mostly centered around the sight of lightning, because of the association the sound of thunder can aggravated keicho greatly and put him on edge while not necessarily triggering him. When okuyasu knows a bad storm is coming, he comes home from work to be with keicho cause they both need it.

Since the kids grew up with this "no lighting" "be careful with electricity" stuff they dont really watch thunderstorms much, but time to time theyll stay the night with tomoko and peer out the window to watch it together. While theyer apart keicho calls them to make sure theyer doing ok, just to ease his worries.
