My Thoughts on the Percy Jackson TV Show (was not a fan):

Months have passed but, I guess I like to throw wood to embers to make fires again. Honestly, I would have abandoned it after episode 3 if it weren't one of my favourite book series ever and I wanted so bad to be hopeful and pleasantly surprised.

I don't think it's a terrible adaptation, but I think it's boring, badly edited, with character inconsistencies, has first-draft-level writing and just missed potential. I'm happy it's been working for so many others, but I've also seen a lot of people being so reluctant to negatively criticise anything about it. Which is weird, it makes me feel like we're watching two different shows and I'm the problem (am I the drama? perhaps. I don't care.)

It's not been an easy time to watch for me; it's a sustained, painful, physical effort to pay attention to this show, especially during dialogue scenes. Like how do you make a show about a bunch of ADHD kids and make it so NOT ADHD-friendly to watch?? (The writers and editors should watch EEAAO, that's how an ADHD brain approaches visual media). The pacing, the terrible exposition, it's the static and uninteresting camera work, the lack of a campy hyping music/soundtrack, the lack of stylization, the lazy editing, the actors stopping to chat in a static shot every other minute, no running during urgent situations, etc. Nothing is engaging! It's such a boring show! There's always exactly 1 thing happening on screen and nothing else around it, no hidden meanings, no mystery, nothing that could be layered storytelling, which is such an important thing in a TV show where you only have 8 episodes to tell your story! Spekaing of, ADHD and dyslexia don't seem to be shown or discussed again after it's mentioned that Percy has it in episodes 1-2. I was hoping for bolder representation with that. (Why didn't they include the little dialogue where neither Percy of Annabeth can figure out the sign at the emporium because of dyslexia, and Grover has to tell them? These little moments count so much for representation of this kind!)

The dialogue paired with the pacing/humour is not landing. It truly feels unpolished, like a first draft. Like technically it serves its purpose, but it's an ineffective, unengaging manner to write a tv script. They should have done more flashbacks too, to give context and exposition. But instead, everything is given to us like you would in a book. (And this is coming from someone who read the books years ago so I NEED this exposition because I don't remember a lot of details, but the exposition isn't even helpful and the writing doesn't keep me engaged enough for me to even pay attention to the exposition!) The actors are doing the best with the material they have, they're all really precious, but this writing and directing is hurting their acting so bad. The dialogue and scenes are so awkward, which hurts the chemistry between the characters too (I expand on my issues with the characters later).

A lot of the tone and pacing issues could just be a book-to-tv adaptation thing because we're no longer in Percy's head with his funny sarcastic remarks and long paragraphs that can give us context. But then why didn't they include narration? Why didn't they keep it up after the intro in episode 1?? Why did they even include that bit if they weren't going to keep it up?? We have 4th-wall narration in lots of things these days (from the top of my head, Fleabag and Deadpool), usually done for comedic and style effect. This would help so much with the pacing and tone! the lost potential is so frustrating. Many movies/shows don't need narration; this one could have benefitted so much from it.

The show is not funny whatsoever when the books are hilarious. At no point did I laugh out loud here. Such a crime. I hate to be one of THOSE but the movies at least got the unserious and funny beats right. Like why is the music in this show just an epic forgettable MCU-like soundtrack but with a serious tone? Why didn't they include modern or campy songs? They should have taken clues from the Umbrella Academy's first seasons. And they could have included Greek music in it too! How cool would that have been? It's not a bad soundtrack by any means, but if nothing else is used in a very strange manner in some scenes because it sometimes cuts the action or doesn't match the energy or vibe of the scenes. The visuals and settings are pretty good, I admit, but these are underserviced by the entire production's lack of style and music and tone are a big part of that.

Some people have said the action scenes are bad, but I feel the problem is there's no sense of urgency, of danger (no layered storytelling here either). The fights with the monsters are okay, great even, the problem is this lack of excitement. The problem is the setups to the action: the lack of tension and then rushed resolutions. For example, they dragged the scenes with Medusa and Equidna talking that it lost all suspense. Equidna literally says instead of just jumping to it, showing what she would do to them kids. (Ok the chimera is cool tho, looks really cool. I want it as a pet 😊 And the editing when Percy falls from the arch is pretty cool too, rare exception.)

But most feels so underwhelming. These kids should also be running everywhere, not calmy walking (bad directing!) This makes the monsters not feel as menacing, because they always have time for a calm exposition break long conversations in the middle of what are supposed to be life-or-death encounters with ancient Greek monsters. And mind you, these pauses for conversation aren't even layered, they're often shot with a static camera, with dull dialogue no 12 yo would speak. They could be having these conversations while running, while hiding, while doing something else! Mix dialogue and action! Layered storytelling, it's about themes and characters but also about how you present the scenes themselves.

An adjacent problem is also that the actualization of the myths for a modern audience is a bit surface-level (like with Medusa). They could have done so much more here.

Now, issues with characterization:

Characters can really make or break a story. Here we have a lot of character inconsistencies, or rather, a lack of definition of the characters. It's not about the show being exactly accurate to the book here, it's the show wasting perfectly good character and plot moments from the show, while not being true to tone and to the core of the characters. Change in adaptations can be good, to consolidate or make things clearer and work for the new medium, but they character work here was very ineffective and inefficient.

Percy is supposed to be cunning, smart but not knowledgeable about the Greek world. The show has this being reversed many times.

Grover is perceptive and has more life experience but he is reduced to nothing here. Like I'm wondering why is he even here?

And Annabeth... Oh. Annabeth is a hard character to portray and write, tbh, it's easy to make her unlikable and straightforward, can very easily come off as annoying, pedantic perhaps, though I am all for unlikeable female heroines. But this is such a baffling iteration of her character. She comes off as a stalker in the first episodes, then she's mean and bossy yet she doesn't seem to actually plan or have good strategies (all is deferred to Percy really), then she sort of uses "the power of friendship" to resolve things but never her growing wisdom. Yes, she could be weird and caring and smart but they didn't nail any of those traits either. They striped her of any complexity. But my biggest gripe is that they didn't make Annabeth nerdy enough! Annabeth sure recalls a lot of facts during the show to look smart I suppose, but she rarely gets to problem solve or truly nerd out neurodivergent kid style, which I think is a huge missed opportunity.

An example, which might be very niche but it shows my issue with her characterization and I have to talk about it cause I'm a physics nerd (literally, it's my major), the part in the ST Louis Arch in episode 4 where she tells Percy and Grover stuff about the construction is so... basic. Like she just read it out of a tourist pamphlet or something. She just says how tall and wide the arch is and that it's symmetrical. That's it. Right...

Why didn't she mention what type of arch it is?? (A catenary arch, more specifically one that follows a weighted catenary curve. It isn't just held by "symmetry" it's tension! It's cool math!) Maybe she even mentions that it's a hyperbolic function and Percy and Grover can be like omg what are you even talking about, and she keeps going on and on about calculus and architecture, like a neurodivergent kid would about their interests. I mean, sure she's like 12, but she's supposed to be like a gifted kid, daughter of Athena, right? She probably knows some of the science and engineering behind the arch. Missed opportunity. Or maybe it's just that I see so much of myself in Annabeth and it hits too close when they can't make her justice. Idk. Like having a true nerdy, brilliant, neurodivergent, bossy but caring, black Annabeth would have been amazing. I guess the world wasn't ready for that.

This was episode 4 and the episodes are NOT getting better...

Also, Annabeth and Percy get sincere with each other really quickly after like 1 day of knowing each other, no layered storytelling or emotional reactions to them baring their deepest fears and darkest backstories either. (Poor kids are doing their best with mediocre adaptation, though Walker is carrying the show at this point, tbh.)

Annabeth and Luke's relationship also suffers a lot from telling and no showing. Why don't we have flashbacks?? Such a missed opportunity for a show. As a rule, showing isn't superior to telling, but these two techniques need to be balanced in the writing, they can be combined too to serve the story during a specific scene or passage. In this case, telling was the wrong way.

For Luke, if they want his arc to have the emotional hit it has in the book, they really needed to build his character more and give him more screen time! Which could have been done with flashbacks. Because with Annabeth's stoic acting, too, we don't really get the emotional reactions appropriate to the events she recounts. So how are we going to feel with the betrayal since the relationship hasn't been built strongly so far? Nothing. We'll feel nothing.

Annabeth's actress is doing her best with what she's given, idk why the production settled on this portrayal like she's in a Disney Channel kids sitcom from the 90s, deadpan but snarky. It's not a flavour of acting that helps this adaptation either. This might be a larger directing issue, though, because Percy barely reacts when he sees his mother "die" in front of him.

Disney watered down Sally too. They really did. Her makeup is nice though.

Anyway, Flashbacks and narration could have saved this series alone, tbh. We don't even know how Thalia looks like or how was she like! So why should we care about the exposition Annabeth says about her?

Also a bit of a nitpick but why isn't it explained why are Percy and Sally are stuck with Gabe in the first place? About his scent? Why is the abuse so... sanitized too? Like yeah, we could have a more psychological and verbal form of abuse situation, of course, but we also didn't get that? Gabe was just unpleasant and a bit of a jerk, pathetic, but that was basically all. Also, no explanation for the blue food?? When it's such insight into Percy's relationship with his mom?? So much EXPOSITION in this series yet they missed many of the important parts!

So... yeah, they could be doing so much more with all the characters.

Concluding thoughts:

I don't hate the show (the visuals are great and Walker Scobell's acting is amazing, such a young talent!), but every time I finish watching an episode, I'm just bored and underwhelmed and wished I had done something else with my time.

Ok, disclaimer, I didn't finish the show. I got distracted and bored and couldn't be bothered. I think I stopped after the Underworld episode (episode 7 I think.) I couldn't be bothered to watch the finale even with Toby Stephens in it. That's how enthusiastic I am about it.

I know it's frustrating that in previous decades usually had 20+ episodes, plus season 1 and 2 being shot side by side so we didn't even have to wait and fear of cancellation after so little; shows really don't have to be perfect from season 1, they need room to grow, but they have to have SOMETHING to pull the viewer in from the beginning, to make them stay. Anything! This show is giving me nothing to work with. I do hope the show gets better in season 2, and I understand that the 8-episode-season model is a constraint for writers, but I still think it could have done much better with the resources it did have.

For example, Black Sails had an infamous first season, but then it grew to be what imo is the best show ever put to TV. And yes, it took a while for it to find its perfect footing, but it was like a delicious cake that maybe has some bad frosting but the foundation is there, it just needs polishing and a few changes. But this PJO show doesn't live up to its potential and it's just so frustrating because I wanted to love this show so much but I'm finding it difficult to think of anything that I truly loved about it other than Walker Scobell's acting and course Toby Stephens (but I already love him from his previous work so it hardly counts).

Honestly, I'm a little bit tired of discourse going around saying that critiquing a show from season 1 is not acceptable because the show hasn't finished growing and we want a second season, we don't want the criticism to affect a season 2. But this is irrelevant and that's not how media criticism works. People can get very on board with good shoes from 1 season alone. That's no excuse. There are genuinely good book adaptations out there that make changes for the better and get a good foothold from the get-go! Look at Lockwood & Co, OPLA or Anne with an E. It can totally be done. The criticisms we have are precisely because we love the books, because we wanted this adaptation to succeed, because we wanted to love it, but it disappointed us. And we are allowed to voice that, as long as is done in good faith.

I'm happy this show got renewed because of the fans who enjoyed it, love the Percy Jackson series, it is truly dear to my heart, but would I be sad if the show was cancelled? Honestly, no. I couldn't care less what happens to this show at this point. Why should I? I was given no reason to care, aside from my already existing love for the books. I'm not intrigued about how they're going to adapt book 2, I didn't connect with the characters, I wasn't having fun. Nothing. And sure, I want young kids to be introduced to Percy Jackson, great if it's through this show, I want younger generations to love this series too, but I don't know any gen alpha who would enjoy such a show. (Hell, I really wanted my audience-age-appropriate niece to love it, but she couldn't care less about it and jeez, I wonder why...) Kids deserve better shows than this.

Will I watch season 2? Idk. Maybe? I can put it in the background while doing something else perhaps. I do hope they improve stuff but I don't have my hopes up. Will I watch episode 8? No. Life's too short. I already read the books so why bother (hehe)

rowing regatta update nobody asked for 😍

i had my VIII race and it went pretty well and we came 3rd!! we lowkey crashed into the pontoon at the start line tho…

it was only a 1km race but i still felt rly tired after bc i just recovered after having the flu…

then as soon as i got back in from my VIII race i had to get to my quad race and i was meant to be 3 seat but the girl in stroke reeeeallyyy didn’t want to be stroke seat so we swapped

we did so well in that race!!!! we came 2nd and we all rowed in time and with really good technique and no crabs!! and my coach told me she might put me in stroke seat more often.

alsooooo there was this really pretty girl in stroke seat for our biggest rival school…. we actually made eye contact and we congratulated each other after our races

after that my friends and i bought food and smoothies from the food stalls and helped with boats and derigging

while i’m writing this we are on the bus back to the boatshed. it’s like an hour long.

Usopp's constant negativity and anxiety are something useful and "positive" at the end of the day (eg: fight against Perona) because he doesn't necessarily need to change his views, he just needs to trust himself and his abilities more and he just uses what he has at the moment which is, you know, negativity. It is not something positive but it does keep him safe from danger and he will end up being proud of himself and stronger than he could ever imagine, but that doesn't mean he'll stop being negative. It's just another personality trait a lot of people have, and Usopp using it for his advantage is something great, I feel. He takes pride in being like that. He's loud and shameless about it.

Unlike Sanji, who dwells on his negativity on his own. Quietly. And lets it consume him without having any power over it. His self-sabotaging and self-sacrificing behavior often comes from a place of giving up out of fear of others getting hurt to save him because that's pretty much his core fear. Being a burden/Not being able to save the people he cares about from himself and his past. It's not something the manga shows that much in comparison to Usopp's negativity, but Sanji's pessimistic views are pretty much one of the reasons why WCI happens and why he puts himself in the worst situation in Wano.

And I think (this is why I'm writing all of this) that they're perfect for each other because Usopp could show him that being afraid and negative isn't something so bad. After all, at least Usopp is aware that if he can't do something, the crew will help him out no matter what. Usopp's negative, yes, but it's alright because he doesn't go through it on his own. Even if he does look shameless and "selfish" when desperately asking for help (he isn't, by the way. It's actually pretty reasonable to act like that). Sanji needs to learn to ask for help shamelessly too and he needs to stop putting all the weight of the world's negativity on his shoulders. They need to carry it together.

Like- There's just something so personal in Usopp going "Yes! I am scared. Frightened even. Please, help!" because he might not like that part of him and he's trying to be stronger and more independent every day, but he acknowledges that things can go south and his reaction is very fight or flight but pretty mostly flight to be safe. While Sanji's response is always to fight because he refuses to let others know he needs help in case something happens to them (and also because he feels ashamed of feeling weak). Usopp shares the responsibility and accepts that he's kind of a loser sometimes but Sanji refuses to do so.

This is just a thought about Sanji learning that being a coward and asking for help isn't bad because they're meant to do stuff like that, and Usopp growing to be stronger and independent but not necessarily stop being pessimistic because sometimes you just... Are like that. Sometimes you're scared. Sometimes you have anxiety. And that's alright. You can be strong anyway.

MY DTI VALENTINE’S DAY UPDATE OPINIONS THAT LITERALLY NOBODY ASKED FOR:

disclaimer: majority of this is gonna be me complaining lmao, because majority of this update sucks. i can complain because i can and because i literally paid real life money for this game so i can say what i want. if you don’t want to hear my complaints then don’t read it lmao…

i’m gonna put majority of my opinions under the cut because this is gonna be long, but here’s just the general overview of my opinions:

the new map is way too big. there is no reason for the map to be that big. i know they said it was for “lag issues,” which i understand, but making an even bigger map isn’t helping with the problems the game already has with lag, just causing more lag… there was no reason for them to take the advent calendar and brat items out of the dressing room and put them across the map. they lost their mind with that 700 robux set especially when the pants don’t even have toggles and i’m pretty sure you can’t put patterns or materials into it. why do i have to play rounds just to access some of the new items? that’s so fucking stupid. yeah it’s not a big deal since i’m gonna be playing the game anyways, but if i’m walking into vip to use an item, i should be able to immediately use it. i don’t know what they were thinking. them removing some good themes for “hide and seek” and other themes such as that is really so annoying. AND them removing literally all the good patterns pisses me off so bad, especially since all the ones they reworked look literally so fucking awful and ai generated. they said they paid artists but they must’ve cheaped out a LOT.

all of the new valentine’s day items are really pretty and i do like them a lot!! i know this is only part one of the update, and i’m not sure if more items will be coming in the second part or if it’s just the style showdown thing (which i’m also excited for), but i was a little shocked to see how little items there was…the items they added are wayy better than the winter update items tho (imo). full thoughts below:

starting off with the map. again, why is it so fucking big? like all the unneccesary beams and platforms and shit are there for no reason. it just makes the new map harder to navigate. i understand they wanted to spread out the map for “lag reasons,” but this gigantic ass fucking map just creates even more lag and doesn’t solve the previous issues. you have to walk ten years just to get the other side of the map, and that’s not even including if you want to go inside of vip. it’s actually ridiculous. people have been complaining since the dressing rooms were added that the bigger map was causing more lag and they just keep making the map bigger?? i get that more items = bigger map, but there is definitely a way to lay out all of the items in a more organized way that decreases lag AND doesn’t have so much unneccesary open space that takes ten years to get across.

also them changing the map literally EVERY update so you’re having to constantly memorize where items are is getting real fucking annoying. and they refuse to literally up the 5 min timer yet want to do this… genuinely pisses me off.

and speaking of dressing rooms, didn’t they say that they were removing them?? i still don’t get why you can’t just hit the codes button and access the items from there like before. that would’ve been so much easier and it would take out the main thing that’s been causing lag this whole fucking time—the dressing rooms. and this is coming from someone who actually likes the dressing rooms. with this new map i gotta walk ten years to the dressing rooms, walk another ten years to get hair and makeup done, and then another twenty just to get an outfit on with the minute i have left. it’s literally so ridiculous. and then on top of that, they took the advent calendar and brat items out of them?? for what??? and they aren’t even on the side where the dressing rooms are either so that’s another ten years just to get to them. why put them in those stupid chests??? and the fact that there aren’t none in vip either so you gotta walk a million years just to access the items in them is just…

now the new robux set… idc that it’s robux, that’s not the part that bothers me. what bothers me is that it was 700 ROBUX. which is $10 USD… for two items… only one of which has toggles. i know they reduced it to 400 robux now, which is like $5 USD but still. and the fact that only the top has like 3 toggles and the pants have none?? i’m not sure if you can put patterns or materials onto it since i didn’t buy the set, but seeing as you can’t with none of the other update items, i’m assuming you can’t with this set either. which is insane for you paying real life money for. yeah they lost their mind with that.

onto you having to play rounds just to access some of the items. while this isn’t that big of a problem, it’s literally so fucking stupid… yeah people are gonna play the rounds and unlock the items anyways, but it’s just so dumb. especially with the items in vip. if you’re already paying real life money for the items in vip why are you limited on when you can access the items??? and it’s like i’d be like alright if it was only one item, but the fact that majority of the items from the new update were locked behind you having to do x amount of rounds is again so stupid. i know they changed it from you having to do 5 rounds to 3, but honestly they should’ve never just added it in the first place especially if people were already gonna play the game. they’re just pissing people off.

the themes…. i’m happy that they removed a lot of the boring ones, but they literally removed boring ones just to add more boring ones??? and then not only that, they removed so many good and interesting themes… mcbling, labyrinth keepers, visual kei??? j-pop and twee and others???? like…

and these new themes… i’ll give it to them a lot of them sound interesting, but some it’s like wtf?? how would you even do that with the items we have in the game? hide and seek? stripes galore? you literally got rid of every striped pattern in the game like… social media mom?? phone app? like seriously?

now these fucking patterns. firstly they removed LITERALLY the only good ones and if you had any of them favorited and you try to favorite others you’re shit out of luck because it won’t let you now. my thing is that they’re saying it’s because of copyright issues but it’s been in the game since launch so obviously they weren’t that worried about it.

and the patters they did rework look GOD FUCKING AWFUL. like i’m honestly shocked that they put these in the game and thought that everyone would be happy. not only do they look horrible, but majority of them look ai generated… they said they had paid people to do the patterns, but i’m assuming that they cheaped out on it cause no way does ALL of them look so bad except for maybe like three. some of them you can’t even tell what patterns they were suppose to be…

these are like the only good ones and even then not by far. why are the zebra and tiger print like that?? like with the weird random straight parts in them?? like i’m genuinely so flabbergasted at all of this. and even then they look ai generated.

and on top of that they’re making us spend like $6k pink cash for new patterns and makeup that should be freely given to everyone with the update like it has been every other update. i seriously just don’t get what they were thinking with all of this. and the makeup is only for custom makeup only so if you don’t have it then you’re just fucked😭 like at least bar it so people who don’t have custom makeup don’t waste their money…

to end all these complaints on a positive note, the new runway and freeplay outside area is really pretty. so is the new quest code!! again, i feel like it didn’t need to be as big especially since the inside map is already so fucking big it’s just causing more lag that they’re apparently saying this “fights,” but whatever. i do also like how they added the ability to have ears on now (without it being a whole other item)!

the new codes (ELLA & CUPIDSCLOUD) are cute too and the skirt will be really nice for layering! the new rewards for runway diva, top model, and supernova are so so cute too i love them!! the new ranks are a bit ridiculous to achieve, but i’m not mad about them. i do feel like if you even want to get past top model you’ll have to farm tho since the voting in this game is so shit, but yeah!

those are all of my thoughts about the update, or at least majority of them. everyone keeps bitching about how people are complaining, but how can people NOT complain when there’s so much fucking shit to complain about??? like look at all of this shit, it’s ridiculous. this isn’t to negate the fact that the devs didn’t work hard, because they did. and i’m grateful with everything they have provided us this update. but it’s clear that this was NOT ready to be posted on the 8th and again on the 15th. honestly, they should’ve just waited and took more time to fine tune things and have it posted at the end of the month or something. it seems like their priorities were elsewhere idk…

at least the items are better than whatever that winter update was, in my opinion… wish you could add patterns to the new items, i don’t know why they have such a vendetta with adding patterns and materials to things, but whatever. 98% of the reworks are fucking ugly, i didn’t even touch on the jeans and shit but yeah. have a nice day everyone if you read this far lmao. 👍

this excerpt is from if you need me, dear, i’m the same as i was:

He’s on the court before Sakusa is. He’s across the net before Argentina can celebrate their victory. He’s grabbing Oikawa’s shoulders tightly before anybody else can get to him. Iwaizumi stares into his estranged best friend’s glassy, confused, uncomprehending eyes. He’s shaking Tooru’s shoulders, desperate as he yells: “You are having a heart attack!” And Hajime is fifteen and three-quarters, learning emergency CPR for his new part-time job as a lifeguard. He thinks that it could come in useful. He thinks that saving people isn’t a job he would mind. And Hajime is sixteen, watching Tooru recover from his surgery, and he realizes he will never play professional volleyball. He wants to help people like Tooru forever — people who want to dedicate their whole life to a sport but have a body that strives to prevent their goal every step of the way. He can’t do that as a player on the court. And Hajime is seventeen, trying to convince Tooru to eat a sandwich even though he is adamantly insisting he isn’t hungry. He discovers sports medicine isn’t just about the physical ills and pains. To be a good athletic trainer, he has to see every aspect of a player’s well-being, and that includes their mental health. And Hajime is eighteen, standing alone in the airport and experiencing loss for the first time. In order for Oikawa to grow as an athlete, he has to cut away the weed strangling his roots. Hajime lets him without complaint. This is part of his new career, after all; if he helps athletes succeed, they would all, one day, leave his medical care. And Hajime is twenty-seven, losing his best friend for a second time at the end of the first set of chest compressions. At least three ribs have cracked under his pace and pressure. He pinches Tooru’s nose, pries his jaw open, and breathes air into his lungs twice. His ring and pinky finger automatically find his pulse point. Nothing. Seeing that no medical equipment has arrived, he starts the second set of chest compressions. Oikawa’s bones creak and give way under his desperation. He knows CPR like the back of his hand; if the ribs are breaking, that means it’s working. It doesn’t get rid of the panic and pain at the thought of how much damage he’s doing to Oikawa’s body. The paramedics are a second too late with their LUCAS device at the end of the last compression. He dives down for another round of mouth-to-mouth, recognizing, faintly yet viscerally at the same time, that Oikawa’s soft skin is pale and rapidly cooling. At the junction between his neck and jaw, Iwaizumi searches for a heartbeat. Breathe. Nothing. Breathe. Nothing.

this entire segment, as i intended, is meant to be read completely out of breath, gasping and choking on every single word. it’s meant to feel like the world is rushing and crumbling around you. it’s meant to be read at the speed of lightning, each word cackling and breaking. the periods in the paragraphs are merely suggestions; every paragraph starts with an and because the last sentence, the last paragraph never really ended.

it’s meant to be, in all intents and purposes, to be one continuous run-on sentence. unfortunately, that would be rather bad form for me as a writer. i don’t have the skill to pull it off just yet.

when you get to the “breathe. nothing. breathe. nothing.” it’s not supposed to be a gentle breathe. it’s supposed to be a gasp, panicked and hurting and desperate. it’s a cry, a sob of pain. medically, he’s doing a very measured recovery breath to force oikawa’s lungs into the action of breathing. mentally, it’s everything but measured. the “nothing” is crying. the actual sob with tears. nothing! he is screaming, knowing that his best friend is fucking dead, but he is saying nothing as he dives into another breath.

it should be read, more accurately, as: “gasp. please, please. don’t leave.”

and this all really stems from the line directly before this excerpt:

“Holy shit,” Iwaizumi whispers, all of the air leaving his lungs.

everything just rushed out of him. he has nothing left. and then, the buzzer sounds with this:

Sixteen to fourteen. Team Argentina wins Olympic gold.

that’s the last line of clarity before everything shatters. literally, the sound breaks with the buzzer as the entire world falls away and rushes at the same time.

this is probably my favorite part of the entire fic, one of my favorite things that i have ever written to date. i put a lot of care into this. everything i wrote came from the heart, and i hope how i intended it to be read translated well.

I think I would probably find Jeeves and Wooster funnier if I could understand a word they were saying. Simply because I'd be able to understand what they were saying and therefore the comedy would land.
