Paige leaned against the worn wooden bleachers, with her gaze being focused on the basketball court below. The sound of sneakers squeaking against the vinyl floor, the thud of the ball, the cheers from the crowd – it all felt like home to her. After all, she had spent hours on that court, pouring her entire heart and soul into the game. 

Beside her, stood her longtime friend and teammate, your presence bringing a comforting and warm energy into the busy and chaotic environment. 

You both had been inseparable since the beginning of freshman year, with your strong love for the game bringing you both closer together. With your bond forged by victories, defeats, laughs and tears, and Paige couldn't imagine her life without you by her side.

As the final buzzer rang, signaling the end of the game, you and Paige exchanged a tired but content smile. Your team had won, as it always did when the two of you played together. Paige hesitated, her mind racing with possibilities. She had received offers from several universities, each promising the chance to continue her basketball career at the collegiate level. But there was one school that stood out above the rest—a school that offered not only a top-tier basketball program, but also the opportunity to hopefully study alongside you.

Unbeknownst to you, Paige had always seen you differently, you were definitely one of her best friends, but her feelings manifested into something different, something she didn't feel towards the rest of her friends. She never knew exactly how to get her feelings across to you, as it was quite apparent that your love and commitment to basketball was above every other aspect in your life. But little did she know, that you yourself also felt the same way she did, also dealing with the unprecedented issue on how to admit her newfound feelings to the blonde. 

"I think I've made up my mind," Paige said finally, her heart pounding in her chest. "I'm going to commit to UConn.” your eyes widened in surprise to her sudden statement,  with a small smirk spreading across your face, “Wait for real? That's where I was planning on going! I was just scared to commit since I wasn't sure if any of my other friends were going.”

Paige's heart soared at the news, relief flooding through her. She couldn't imagine navigating the challenges of college without her closest friend by her side. Together, they had conquered high school basketball, and now they would take on the next chapter of their lives together as well.

As they made their way out of the locker room, Paige couldn't shake the feeling of excitement coursing through her veins. The prospect of attending UConn with you by her side, filled her with a sense of anticipation unlike anything she had ever experienced before. For the first time in her life, she felt truly ready to take on whatever the future held.

Over the next following months, you and Paige had become immersed into your applications and studies, spending long hours honing your skills on the court, preparing yourselves for the challenges that lay ahead of you. So it was not surprising that when the acceptance letters finally came in, you celebrated with one another, knowing that your dreams were finally within reach. 

As your white manicured nails gripped around the now empty can of whiteclaw, you couldnt help but wonder about your future with Paige. Yeah you two were going to the same school, but could you really continue hiding your feelings from her? I mean eventually she was bound to find out, what would you even do when in time she got a girlfriend? 

Paige could tell you were stressed, as she took your face into her hands and cupped your cheeks, something she often did, but this time it seemed different. “Don't be stressed”, she said, with a hint of alcohol lingering in her voice. “It's all gonna be okay, we finally did it. It's only uphill from here.” You smiled at her remark, slowly beginning to lean closer to her. Her eyes made their way onto your lips, as she gave you that look. You quickly leaned away, breaking your eye contact. You laughed slightly, chucking up your actions to the alcohol, and got up from your chair. “I should head home” you stated, immediately regretting opting out of the possibility of kissing your longtime best friend. Before the blonde could respond, you were already on your way, walking back towards the direction of your house. 

As the summer drew to a close and the start of college loomed on the horizon, you and Paige found yourselves filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness. But ever since that day, the blonde knew she had to come clean about her feelings, as you two would be playing side by side at UConn for the next 4 years. But still, a weight of anxiety weighed itself onto Paige's shoulders, she knew she had to tell you. There was no way she could avoid it for any longer, or procrastinate even further. 

She made her way over to your house, knocking at your door slightly, when you opened it your gaze was surprised but loving, not expecting to find the 6 '0 girl on your doorstep. 

She soon broke the silence, mumbling a “Sorry for coming without notice, I just needed to see you.” you nodded slightly, opening the door further as an invitation for the blonde to let herself in, before making your way to your bedroom. 

You sat on your bed, your eyes avoiding Paige’s gaze, not really sure what to say, let alone what the blonde needed to discuss. Paige made her way towards you, plopping on the space right beside you before facing you, starting off with a “Look, I know we've been friends for freshman year, but I need to be honest with you y/n.” You furrowed your brows slightly, giving her a confused look in reply. She continued slowly… “I like you y/n, like like, not like a friend, but- fuck. I don't even know what to say, I completely understand if you don't feel the same way but please just hear-” you couldn't even let the blonde finish her sentence before placing a passionate kiss on her lips, one that only lasted a few seconds but felt like an entire lifetime had passed. 

It felt as if fireworks were going off inside your head, as all your worries melted away as you yourself melted into the kiss. You soon pulled away, before whispering “that's my answer, P.”

Since that day, your relationship blossomed day by day as you prepared for the sudden switch in your lives, navigating the first year of college together.

Over the next four years, you and Paige forged a path through college unlike any other. You studied together, laughed together, and yes, even argued from time to time. But through it all, your  bond remained unbreakable, a constant source of strength and support in a world that was constantly changing.

And on the basketball court, you both were unstoppable. With Paige's skill and your determination, you both led UConn to victory after victory, cementing your places in the annals of college basketball history. 

As graduation day approached, you both were filled with a mix of emotions. Of course you were sad to say goodbye to the place that had been your home for the past four years, but you both were also excited to see what the future held for your relationship.

 As you stood on stage together, your hands intertwined and your diplomas in hand, you knew that no matter where life took you,  you both would always be there for each other, ready to face whatever challenges came your way.

2024 Game of the Year Countdown Honorable Mention: Pokemon Leaf Green Nintendo GameBoy Advance, 2005

Playing another Kanto game so soon?? (Preview: there will be another Kanto game on my GotY list) AND doing a poison type Nuzlocke? Am I crazy?

Well, not entirely. I’ve been wanting to replay Pokemon games lately and I’ve seen Kanto dozens upon dozens of times over the years, so I’d definitely need something to keep it fresh. Add in that Gen 3 is probably my least favorite generation, and I DEFINITELY needed encouragement. As this particular replay was more about my Nuzlocke attempt, my “review” will lean entirely on that aspect rather than anything else. Check below the cut for a lengthy summary!

I have only ever truly tried one Nuzlocke in my Pokemon career, and it was also on a Gen 3 Kanto remake. I tried a bug type only Nuzlocke on Fire Red a very, very long time ago, and it ended in tragedy. I made it all the way to Lance, where I lost my Beedrill, and then lost the other four members of my team against Gary. A critical hit at the wrong time put me in a bad spot and Scyther couldn’t Swords Dance me outta that one. Bug types had me hamstrung from the start, as I only had five available to me: Beedrill, Butterfree, Parasect, Venomoth, and Scyther (no Pinsir since I had no trade options open to me at the time). It was rough and Blaine involved a LOT of luck. However, this is not about my failed Nuzlocke attempt from long ago; it’s about my successful one from 2024!

I fell into poison type as my option since it offered me a few choices, but none of them were exactly OU tier crushers. Additionally, I was stuck without certain options, like Crobat due to the lack of friendship evolutions, and Gengar, since while I do have trading available to me now, I wasn’t willing to restart my post-Elite Four Fire Red in order to complete a trade. Gen 3 had some stupid roadblocks and the trade limits are really annoying. Don’t get me started on how they permanently ruined the entire stat system, not to mention how hard it was to Catch ‘em All. I digress.

Bulbasaur was my starter and obvious choice for a strong, early poison type. With both Nidorans catchable before Mt. Moon, and two Moon Stones within, I was able to waltz into Cerulean City with a Nidoqueen and Nidoking. This made the early game a breeze! I appreciate the original Gen 1 designers for making it possible to find such strong Pokemon early in the game, should you know where to look and what to do.

My next team member was going to be Haunter, and I did give myself one rule exception to the standard Nuzlocke: Haunter, as a ghost, is allowed to faint; but ONLY when using Destiny Bond. Seems fitting and proper for a ghost to be able to do stuff like this. As an attacker, Haunter was destroying teams with her crazy high special attack. This was nice since I wasn’t going to be able to do the trade evolution required for Gengar. 

Tentacruel came next and easily slotted in. I found myself riding high for a long time, but I knew I’d eventually have to face my most difficult challenge: taking on Sabrina. With only poison types available, I was fully exposed to everyone in the gym. Destiny Bond Haunter can only get me so far, so I was glad to see that Gen 3 did at least one thing right: they gave Nidoking Megahorn. 

Sabrina ended up being a huge pushover. As did Giovanni and Victory Road. Before I knew it, I was at the Indigo Plateau and the Elite Four. Now, I recall my Fire Red bug type Nuzlocke going similarly, but I wasn’t going to allow myself to grind levels for a simple advantage like that. I had to do it the hard way.

I got lucky with some odd choices by the AI when fighting Lorelai; Slowbro vs Nidoking saw her use Amnesia when I didn’t OHKO her with Megahorn, which is a very strange choice. I know Gen 1 had some poorly programmed AI, but I figured they would have fixed it by Gen 3. Then, Nidoqueen’s Thunder got a critical hit against Cloyster, and I easily Destiny Bonded Lapras with Haunter. Bruno was a joke, and Agatha was as well, aside from her higher-level Gengar, which turned into a war of attrition with the Poke Flute constantly playing in the background while she got extremely lucky on like eight Hypnosis hits in a row. 55% accurate move, but 100% accurate in the hands of the CPU AI.

Lance was also surprisingly easy. Putting Ice Beam on Tentacruel proved to be crucial, as was keeping Barrier. But Gary’s sheer level advantage was always going to be a huge challenge. 

Nidoqueen took care of Pidgeot easily enough, and Destiny Bond took care of Alakazam thanks to another strange AI choice, when it opted for Future Sight over Psychic on turn one, as I discovered that Haunter, despite putting all the EV’s I could into speed, was slower than Alakazam. Nidoking OHKO’d Exeggutor, but this is where I started to run into trouble. I threw one Rock Tomb on Charizard, but had to switch out after a much too powerful Fire Blast. Nidoqueen missed Thunder TWICE, and fell to Gary’s Charizard. RIP Nidoqueen.

Tentacruel was up next, and with Rock Tomb’s speed reduction, cleaned up easily. Rhydon never stood a chance, either. Gary’s last Pokemon, Gyarados, would prove much more difficult than any Gyarados should in the pre-physical/special split era. I figured Venusaur would be a good matchup, and I got one Leech Seed off before a Thrash critical hit claimed another victim. RIP Venusaur.

Nidoking was next and got off only a single Rock Tomb before Hydro Pump claimed him as well, but I did get the speed reduction I wanted. RIP Nidoking.

Tentacruel was my only Pokemon left, I tripled up on Barrier to max out my defense, and Thrash was doing like 17 damage. With Leech Seed, the speed reduction of Rock Tomb, and maxed out defense, I knew I was in a really great position for the long haul. After what felt like a dozen Full Restores, the AI finally gave up and I took the fight. 

Technically, only Haunter and Tentacruel survived the Nuzlocke challenge, which is a bit disappointing if I’m honest. But it was still a fun way to play an old game from a generation that isn’t one of my favorites.

Midwest Angelica by Team AQ

Onto our second series, now, Midwest Angelica is significantly more recent than Gemini Home Entertainment, but has a lot of backing within the analog horror community. If one was to check out the main subreddit and peek at a few of the many tier-lists that came out around a certain point, Midwest Angelica tends to rank fairly high.

I will be honest and say that this didn’t end up being one of my favorites for reasons I’ll elaborate on in the more in-depth analysis, but I do see the appeal of it, and the hook at the beginning really caught my attention.

As before, some spoiler free qualities:

• Cosmic threats that aren’t just straight alien invasions.

• End of the world scenarios with a lot of fighting to prevent it.

• A threat that is way too smart for its own good.

• Hive-mind-threats.

• Rural settings, if isolation is your jam, Midwest Angelica has it covered.

• On-screen payoff, though this does come at the cost of having a cinematic shot in the middle of security recreations.

• Twisted security, not to the extent of Gemini necessarily but Midwest doesn’t just present footage as a way to convey important information/events.

• Not safe at home, this is done in regular horror a lot, but analog horror tends to make home invasion scenarios much mire real and scary, Midwest Angelica nails that in Act 1.

•Religious symbolism/literal representation, not necessarily a demon, which is rare to see with this kind of horror.

Now here’s the more in-depth look, again, more prone to spoilers:

Midwest Angelica, as I mentioned before, got my attention because it had an amazing dramatic hook, if you go to the YouTube channel, it’s right in the description. To be as spoiler-free as possible, if you enjoyed The Thing by John Carpenter, you’re likely to enjoy this one, too.

This series is good at developing the threat and making you recognize it as a threat despite showing it in the first episode. It overwhelms you with a chaotic situation and pulls you in to want to know what’s actually happening. Throughout this as well, the actual footage is broken up by digital simulations of events. The first episode alone is an excellent example of careful setup and payoff.

It also does a good job at demonstrating the spread of the threat, first it’s being observed by a space program, then it unexpectedly crashes and a team of researchers is sent after it, and when that doesn’t go well, we immediately see a family being attacked by it at their remote home. It’s a common setup for threats of this kind, but the analog format paired with how Team AQ actually handles it made it a lot more visceral and engaging.

The reason I didn’t end up liking it was because I’m personally less of a religious horror person, and because I felt disappointed at how the actual threat differed from what I imagined based on the hook. So it’s nothing the series itself did wrong and is just a preference issue on my end. I did end up being slightly broken from emersion because, as stated above, there was a well-done but out of place cinematic shot which included complete focus on a 3D model with not enough effects to cover the flaws in it. Again, it’s a preference thing for me, and the 3D is used to good effect in other areas of the series.

All of this being said, lots of people still love this series, so I will still recommend it. It has a large audience, updates frequently, and seems to know exactly where the narrative is going. And as we’ll see with other series’, the effects may be bad, but they might be able to be ignored if the concept is good and executed well enough.

Plus, this series is much shorter and less daunting to watch than Gemini.

Marco Treviño, 40, is the new coach of the United States Hockey League's Tri-City Storm.  

"I want people to understand. You come from a Latin background -- in my case, being full Mexican -- it's not something you see in the game. I want people to see it, so they say, 'This guy did it. This guy played for a long time, and now he's coaching for a long time.'"

Treviño wants to share that part of his family story -- to represent, educate, and inspire.

Marco grew up in the Detroit area, where his parents, Bernardino and Gloria, still live today. Bernardino was born in Linares, Nuevo León, Mexico, and immigrated to the U.S. at 17 years old; Gloria was born in Michigan after her parents moved from Linares to Detroit.

A former defenseman, Marco picked up hockey for the same reasons many kids try the sport: he grew up near rinks, and his older brother, Juan, played first. At a time when relatively few Mexican-Americans played high-level hockey, Treviño reached the USHL with the Waterloo Black Hawks and Sioux City Musketeers.

On Dec. 3, 2024, Treviño was elevated from assistant coach to head coach. Treviño believes the promotion is rooted in crucial lessons he learned while coaching AAA hockey based in suburban Detroit.

"I was able to build a bit of a reputation there -- this is where that second-tier player should go, who's not the most heavily recruited, to get better and stronger and work their way up to the [North American Hockey League]," Treviño said. "A lot of those guys, I still keep in touch with."

Treviño's development philosophy is also informed by his most important role: father to three children, including 18-year-old Tristen.

Tristen was born in 2006, shortly after Marco turned 22, and is now a defenseman with the Bismarck Bobcats of the NAHL.

"I think that's helped me as a coach, knowing what people are telling these kids," Marco said. "My son's been up and down, the [NAHL] and USHL. Knowing what pressure is on these kids: Division I scholarships, which colleges are talking to him, is he in the lineup tonight. …

"Having those conversations with my son on a personal level, and knowing exactly what he's feeling, is what allows me to have empathy in those same conversations with my guys."

Treviño's approach was rewarded when the Storm named him as their 10th head coach.

"When I started coaching, this is the level I always wanted to be at," he said. "This was the goal, to be a USHL head coach. I feel like I can give the most to players -- and players need the most support -- at this age, with things going on in their lives. Moving away from home, not being with their families for the first time, but they're all Division I committed, so there's a hurry to get to college.

"I know when I played, it was a very tough time for me. This is where I feel like I can offer the most support to players."

Marco has made countless trips to Mexico to visit relatives there; Bernardino has seven brothers and seven sisters) Family remains at the center of Treviño's life despite the challenges of working in hockey. The Tri-City Storm is based in Kearney, Nebraska, but Marco's wife, Keila, and their children remain based in the Pittsburgh area; Marco had coached there for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite program before joining the Tri-City coaching staff.

The current Colorado College associate coach, recommended that Tri-City general manager, hire Treviño as a Pittsburgh-based scout. When then-Storm assistant departed the organization, the Tri-City general manager offered Treviño the opportunity to replace Nies.

"I knew the opportunity doesn't come around very often, so I had to jump and take it," Treviño recalled. "It's been great, but it's tough. I live away from home … I have a 6-year-old with autism, so the programs he's in -- counseling and schooling -- everything's already set up there, so we weren't able to really move. It's not an option to move him."

Like many of the players he's coaching, Treviño had to move away from home to pursue his hockey dream. That's yet another common experience as he seeks to build connections with his players.

"Being empathetic, putting myself in other people's shoes, and saying, 'This is what's going through an 18-, 19-, 20-year-old kid's head,'" Treviño says. "Thinking about it in a supporting role, instead of a dictating role, and guide them through the process.

"Making the experience positive, teaching them life lessons they can carry on to Division I, to pro -- that's where I'd like to think I have success, trying to get through it with them."

*Spoiler Alert* Solo Leveling Ep. 18 Review

I've been exhausted this week, so posting this had been put on hold for a bit. But Oh. My. Gawd... this last episode... Kyaaaaaa or better yet,꺄아아아아❗ It was SO HOTTTT!

BAE was spectacular!!💖🙌🏾✨ Even the intro was 🔥!

The week before, we ended with them stuck in the Orc dungeon, where they were brought before a high Orc. Unfortunately they learned that all he wanted was to "devour" them all.

Just as the orcs were busy with their ridiculous show of power and intimidation, Jinwoo simply looked back at his shadow, reminding us exactly what he had in store for them. That just gave me chills. So exciting!

Can I just comment on the level of artistry that went into this animation? It was so beautifully executed. An absolute thrill to watch.

Kihoon, the leader of this wonderful strike team spoke to the Orc leader, and they all were reasonably and absolutely petrified.

Yet Kihoon, regardless of their fear, charged forward with the intent to attack, only to be met with the Orc's tremendous magic power, which nearly ended him.

And of course, his boys showed up, and displayed exactly what they were capable of. Iron was just pleased as pleased as punch, using his roar, then destroying leagues of them instantaneously with his weapon.

Not to mention IGRIS!!! OMG... I fangirl over him too. He is Jin-woo's right hand man, and his fighting style is always absolutely MESMERIZING! 😭I recall being completely enamored, panel by panel, imagining what this would be like animated.

As Woo Jin-Chul is making his way into the dungeon, the boys attack with combos again, in yet another insane battle sequence.

Igris went ham on these ninjas tearing them to shreds. At one point he LEFT his sword BEHIND, only to pick it back up to complete his combos. 🙌🏾✨ Tank and Iron definitely got some licks in, too.

the High Orc leader whines a bit, just so insulted at the notion of Jin-woo being capable of this, yet Jin-woo blasts away his magic shield, destroying his cool skeleton mask, sending that joker flying behind him in pieces. Hahahaha! So disrespectful.

Jin-woo finally puts him down during the final EPIC fight scene, complete with his assassin attack and Rulers Hand technique, gaining yet another tremendous talent among his shadow ranks, Tusk.

As busy as he was, our hero was unable to escape the flabbergasted gazes of Cha and Jin-Chul, who showed up just in time to see him NOT keeping his strength a secret, and in a very obvious way. lol

He received a well deserved "thank you" and an escort out of the dungeon, as Cha gathered herself and refrained from the embarrassment of anyone finding out she was checking him out. lol

This episode was amazing. They did a beautiful job on it, and as always it was quite satisfying.

I'm trying to solidify the mechanics of my quirk. Basically, the quirk allows the use to literally communicate with technology, via spoken words as if it were "human," ChatGPT style. From an outside perspective they'd just be taking at a machine, but in the quirk users head there's actual communication. It's essentially technopathy but less direct since it requires articulation with words. The issues come from how I don't for sure know if the effects are within the scope of a quirk. Talking to animals is one thing, but technology might be a stretch?? I'm not super duper worried about practicality/power, since It's for a more comedic OC, but I still want a degree of usefulness, though I think it fits the bill. In short, the user can talk to any tech like it were a chatbot AI, ask a computer to unlock,and would struggle to get their point across, insert laugh track here. For the name I was thinking something like "Geek Speak" or "Techno Babble."

Its "Technobabble" anon again, and I though a bit more on my quirk. I realized how it felt a bit too fantasy, so I came up with a more grounded explanation/means. The user's can convert their spoken words into a form of audio "virus" or sorts, that allows them to essentially run/manipulate/reprogram technology with their voice. (Not really important, but i think it'd be fun if it sounded like dial-up from an outside perspective), but it only works on devices with a CPU. Issues come from how a degree of programming knowledge is needed in order for the user to properly phrase and articulate their commands get the effects they actually want. In addition, higher level CPU would be more difficult for the user to communicate with (so they likely can't ask Tartarus to shut down and would struggle to high end government computer to unlock for them.) Also, only the user's actual voice can trigger the quirk, Shinso style. How would these changes fare in making the quirk fit in better?

Right off the bat, I have to say it: S Tier names right there.

I think this is a pretty neat idea for a power and a lot of the pieces of it could work. However, the issue is that technology is very broad, so you will need to be careful with how you balance it. I would give some examples of what the user can affect, like what The usage of viruses and programming languages implies it can only work on computers, but you may want to clear that up just to sure. On that note, I am not sure about requiring the user to speak programing language to the user. That's either way too hard or way too easy of a downside depending on how exactly you have it work. Like, if all you have to do is say "command" and "execute" or they need to talk to it like they need to talk to Siri, it wouldn't be that hard. So I would either revise that or remove it from the power. Though if you do decide to drop it, it's going to need some replacement. Like I mentioned, if was limited to stuff with computers and processors could help. They can work on a phone, but they can't control a car or anything. Maybe you could drop some of the applications to make it weaker, like they can't reprogram something. Maybe using it too much can mess with the user's ability to speak or understand language, using it too much or incorrectly can hamper the machines' ability to function, or it can cause some mental feedback.

Welp, with the encouragement of my dear sweet enablers, I've done it. I posted what I had sitting in my docs of the RvB university AU onto AO3.

The basic gist: Blood Gulch Hall is a student residence of the local university. It has a red hall of students, a blue hall of students, and a purple hall meant for the Residence Assistants. Sarge, of course, is one RA- convinced the two halls of students are separate and rivals- and so he's moved himself in amongst the students there. Flowers was the other RA until he suddenly died, leaving the blue hall with no real oversight.

After a prank gone wrong, the university decides a new RA needs to be assigned. Wash, a student who's distinguished himself to the school through the Project Freelancer student research placements, is given the job- much to his relief, as it's a sweet deal that saves him from his crushing student debt. Naturally, the local residents do not take kindly to his attempts at enforcing rules, and tomfoolery ensues.

Church is a history major finishing his final year of undergrad. As the member of Blood Gulch Hall that's been there the longest, he's especially tired of everyone's shit, but knows exactly how everyone seems to operate. He's also the son of the Director of the university, and has one of the biggest grudges against him and the school. In general, he's jaded and cynical, but likes fucking with the other residents and shooting the shit with Tucker.

Tucker is a political science major- after going on a student exchange program in high school with the intent of just getting away for a while so he could slack off and "pick up chicks who think foreigners are hot", he ended up accidentally adopting a role as an unofficial ambassador of his home country-and decided to try and pursue it as a career. He also minors in human sexuality- which he thought was going to teach him about how to be a sex god, but actually ended up making him re-evaluate himself and realize his constant talking about chicks was covering up his insecurity about his bisexuality.

Caboose is a mechanical engineering student in his third year. Though no one knows it, he's actually only been at the school for two years- he overloaded courses and passed them with surprisingly strong grades. He doesn't spell very well, which is mostly me leaning into the classic "engineers can't spell" joke, but he's extremely gifted in math and robotics, thinking in numbers and spacial reasoning- baffling his professors and classmates alike. Caboose is accustomed to a large family, which naturally comes with a lot of bickering. He views the group at Blood Gulch Hall like a surrogate family that way- and is happy to just smile and nod when they argue amongst themselves, more concerned with his latest robotics projects.

Kai is a business major- she's been running side hustles most of her life, it seemed natural for her to take it to the next level using the savings she'd made. She knows people don't typically view her as smart, that they look at her as a bimbo- and doesn't care. She sometimes even leans into the role if it means she can turn people underestimating her to her advantage. She throws awesome parties, knows all the cool people on campus, and has all the best self-care tips and tricks. She also delights in embarrassing her older brother at every opportunity.

Grif is a chemical engineering student- at the time, it seemed like a good idea. He had a dream, you see, to develop a banana flavouring that actually tasted like bananas, a grape flavouring that actually tasted like grapes. By the time he realized it would be a lot more complicated than that, it was too late- he was committed. He now spends his time suffering through and scraping by in all the core engineering classes, learning about motors and thermodynamics and waiting for the light in the tunnel. He passes his free time by developing a tier list of all the pizza joints across campus, and perfecting his own brownie recipe (with and without weed).

Simmons is an electrical and computer engineering student. He was always a nerd, but until he gained a bionic arm, he'd been leaning more towards the theoretical side of the sciences. After that, though, he was constantly studying in his own time, learning how to tinker with it and improve its performance- which naturally brought him to engineering. He's the kind of keener who does all the readings well in advance, visits every office hour even when he doesn't need help just in case there's interesting discussion, and stays after class to chat with professors. He pretends to be tired of Grif leaning on his to study for the things he doesn't find interesting, but he secretly enjoys being the smart one who can lecture his friend on a topic.

Donut is a vet sciences student- he grew up on a farm, surrounded by and caring for a myriad of animals, and kept the passion for it throughout his whole life. He plans on specializing in bovine and equine medicine, which means he doesn't get grossed out by much anymore. It throws people off when he cheerfully discusses sticking his arm inside a cow's ass- but he's so desensitized he doesn't even consider it, much to the dismay of Grif and Simmons. He and Kai are the residence's biggest supporters of self-care regimens, regularly getting together to discuss skin care while they give each other manipedis. He also enjoys wearing novelty themed earrings... when there isn't a concern of a patient biting them.

Sarge is the RA for the red team... and while very few people know it, that's actually the umbrella term over his true role as Faculty in Residence. He's a member of the engineering faculty, specializing in combustion modelling. After developing the Stagnation And Radiation Generalizing Equations method of computation and modelling (SARGE method for short), he was granted tenure and celebrated as a pioneer in his field. However, over time, he was left in the dust as the field was largely dropped in favour of more environmentally friendly things like electric vehicles. Very few people remember his contributions to the field now, and he's never really asked to teach classes, so he was appointed RA so the pay wasn't going to waste... and he's thrown himself quite cheerfully and passionately into his work.

Wash is a walking disaster- and by that, I mean he's in his third year, has no declared major, and is still trying to figure out what he wants to do with himself. Formerly part of the university's Project Freelancer, a research placement that recruits undergrads into a high-pressure work environment for very little pay, he's found himself burnt-out and exhausted. Being given a work-study position as the peer mentor RA of Blood Gulch Hall is a relief- it doesn't pay, but it's free housing and a waived tuition fee for the year that gives him time to figure his shit out. Unfortunately, his reliance on the job ends up becoming another source of stress... and it's a while before he learns the motions of living and working with his fellow residents.

...Obviously there's way more to it, more characters, more lore tidbits that I've yet to sprinkle in, et cetera. But this post is already long enough, so if there's interest, I'll probably post that another time.
