How do you think Severus would react if someone was always watching him -- Like observing his every move, not with malice but with concern -- but didn't say much because they couldn't speak English and were afraid to be picked on as well due to a bad/similar past? They did anonymously sneak small treats into his pocket when they passed by him in the halls.

Like I have an oc who knew Severus since their Hogwarts days. They didn't speak to anyone because they couldn't speak English (though they could understand some words) and because before they moved to Britain they dealt with what Severus went through in their home country. But they did try to make him feel better by slipping a chocolate frog into his pocket robes when they passed by the halls to their classes for example.

I'm asking since I really like your deep dives when it comes to Severus and his potential moves/reactions and I'm curious to see what your take on this would be?

I'm assuming your OC was somewhat transferred during their studies? Because I imagine that if they started at 11 they'd be able to learn English in the following months/years. He won't react exactly in the same way if it's from the beginning but let's go for both options.

If it was since they both started Hogwarts, I think an 11yo Severus would find it odd and be a bit wary of them but not overall hostile. He's pretty new there himself, is surely a bit overwhelmed with the amount of socializing he needed to do (and adapt to, especially in Slytherin where the pureblood customs must be quite prevalent) but also work. I think he must have tried for friends for at least his first 1-2 years before giving up. Honestly if someone was silently watching him, even tho he knew they couldn't speak good English, I think he could have tried talking to them. I don't believe he was shy by any means - tho he could have been quite blunt and not super good at engaging conversation (remember his opening line with muggleborn Lily was smth like 'I know what you are! *whisper* You're a witch' which is adorably inadequate and dramatic). And he was already an oddball for many reasons and the ones who look the same tend to stick together so if your OC was quite isolated as well, a friendship could have developed early on even before the worst of the bullying happened.

I sometimes have my own oc be at Hogwarts at the same time as him and she also struggles with a lack of vocabulary and a terrible accent so I always imagined him as going into lecture mode and correcting her. But it would mostly be in later years since at the beginning he would still - like Lily - have a cockney dialect and accent. But could be cute if him and your OC worked on their 'proper' English together.

If it happened in the later years when the bullying was already quite present tho, he'd act like a cornered animal. By 15 I think he'd have developed an acute sense of people watching him (from the Maraudeurs but really everyone else too) and assume this is pity, mockery or downright animosity. Depending on his mood and the level of threat he'd either ignore them and hide behind his hair or glare and maybe verbally attack.

So I think he'd glare at your OC for a good while, thinking they're pitying him (so now what, even the foreigner is judging him?). He'd see they're not saying anything and with time he'd maybe realize there's nothing malicious in the way they stare. Which isn't better (well it clearly is but he'd be at a point where attention is always considered negative anyway). Like... what do they want?!

And then he'd find the little presents in his pockets.

And think it's pity. And hate it.

Or maybe it's cursed. So he'd toss it.

But at the same time it's hurting in his chest because a tiny tiny part of him maybe hopes they're not like everyone else... Maybe someone doesn't hate him or despise him just because he exists. But his heart has hardened and trusting anyone seems utopic now.

At one point I could see him coming up to them on a very bad day (maybe after being bullied by the Marauders and he's hiding somewhere and your OC followed him) and be like 'WHAT?! What's your fucking problem?!', spitting the words, eyes black in anger and humiliation, tears prickling at the corner of it because he's so furious.

And maybe they still won't say anything or try (I mean Severus must look very scary but also very like a wounded animal). Maybe they will give him something else, trying to convey with gesture or with their eyes and the little words they manage to sputter through the fear that they just care.

It would be nearly impossible for him to accept but at the same time he'd want to believe it so bad.

Could be a very cute and emotional scene.

And maybe after that if they tried to sit not to far away from him he'd let them. And maybe they'd keep on gifting him food and stuff. Or send him gentle looks when people snickers around him. And maybe he'd let them sit beside him at one point. And maybe they could start slowly hanging around each other. Slowly. He'd teach them more English, not looking at them too much because their eyes are so big and expressive and he doesn't know how to handle it. And maybe he'd start having a friend.

And maybe they'd go to Hogsmeade together once. And maybe-
