Anyways, Gi-hun enters the world of crime and shit, where his first encounter is with some random ass short male that can't pick a struggle. (*cough cough* In-ho, a major crime boss *cough cough*) He basically stops In-ho from killing some bad people, bc he's pro-life or whatever, and this results in In-ho becoming majorly obsessed with Gi-hun. He really wants that cookie, huh Flash-forward a couple of years, Gi-hun evolves like a freaking pokemon into this really sexy vigilante, who literally everyone loves, bc even though he knows how to kill you in 51 different ways using a needle, he's a really nice person who will return your stolen purse. Also both Sang-woo and In-ho are after his ass Also In-ho hired a henchman that goes by the alias The Salesman, to find Gi-hun. Salesman did find Gi-hun, they just happened to have a little bit of fun if you know what I mean 😏 Now the Salesman is also after Gi-hun's ass Sigh, men really just can't let go of that gihussy Then Gi-hun runs into this really nice police officer, who is currently trying to figure out where the hell his brother disappeared off to like 210942190428149021410241920 years back (I'm lying In-ho isn't that old. I think.) They hit it off, and basically Junhun happens. Yeah this is a Junhun endgame AU you can't stop me. Well I mean, Jun-ho does eventually reunite with In-ho, and well, brothers share everything, wink wink nudge nudge... I hope I impress my brainrot on you with the idea of a Jacaegon Driftmark dagger scene. Listen and hear me out, they're buddies and I made the rules so that Aegon invites him along to hang out and pour goblets, I know younger Jace would be on board bc Aegon opens him up to terrible behavior in my head and judging by Jace's enthusiastic collab in being the right hand in the Pink Dread prank, I'm willing to bet on this misfit behind closed doors idea.

Jace also probably trusts him enough to vent his fears around his bastardry situation, all until Driftmark happens and Aegon gets a wake up call rotating back to his mother's scolding that "in the world we must defend our own" because in that situation the abuse went too far and now Aemond will have a gaping hole in his head for the remainder of his life. This time Jace isn't on his side. He defends himself and Luke against being called bastards while knowing firmly that he is one, and with having confided in Aegon about that.

Aegon has known Jace as nothing but honest, and now he turns foot when his brother has hurt Aegon's, when accountability is "inconvenient"(it's actually dangerous here but I'll yap that in a moment), and Aegon registers it as abandonment and rejection. Biggest Jacaegon headcanon is that Aegon is far more fixated on Jace than the other way around. Aegon also disregards that Jace admitting to his bastardry would be a social/inheritance/even literal death sentence, Aegon is drastic and demands the impossible, tuning in into how he is overstepping boundaries and holding others at the disposal of his desire.

So, Aegon swipes the knife from his father before his mother can and throws himself at Jace, he wants to harm him but also doesn't, he is obsessed and not in a good way, his nephew is acting differently and the pattern has changed. His lack of control over The Strongs, Jace in particular, drives him absolutely nuts. He accuses him of having no spine and the lot of it in such a personal and coded language that nobody understands anything, but they do.

I'm also hc-ing the thing where Aegon associates the warmth of others with drinking since Vizzy T would give him attention and among that, goblets, during his toddler years where he was cute until he suddenly wasn't interesting anymore. Which is why I mentioned roping in Jace to drink bc I'm sure that here, he would fill the void of his longing with alcohol, smth smth the first man in his life that he loved as a baby abandoned him, smth smth the second man that he loved wouldn't sacrifice himself (demanding much??) for his sake. Aegon drinks abt the men in his life who are doing their best to avoid him. Here, Jace is definitely wary of him.

Like Aegon leaned on him so much, he finally had a friend at the very least. Only for them to be kinda ripped apart because of the need to protect their brothers.

Honestly it kinda mirrors how people ship Lucmond (Which I don't personally but thats just me). Like Aegon being angry and obsessed with Jace but only because he wants that comfort back. He wants that connection back because it was the warmest he's ever really felt with someone. As opposed to Aemond being angry and obssessed with Luke out of revenge and anger.

Me assuming since Through the Moon came out that Callum would inevitably play into Aaravos's hands and that the struggle to not do so would be his main conflict in arc 2 (which looking back, the possession plot line seems so thematically obvious I am genuinely a little sheepish I didn't see it coming)

The game motif being my favourite motif and then s4 fucking Delivered it was beautiful

Viren's atonement arc because of his eye symbolism

That the rune cube placement could be trusted to foreshadow things, specifically the Ocean rune in finding the prison and in foreshadowing Callum's dark magic use

Me going "Hey wouldn't it be Fucked Up if whatever comes out of the cocoon is like a child version of Aaravos?" (hi Sir Sparklepuff my beloved)

For that matter: that Aaravos would ask one of the mage fam to kill Sir Sparklepuff for a deep magic spell, and that they'd refuse to do so

Callum's interplay with freedom being too tethered to Rayla that I banked on her eventually being taken hostage and Callum doing morally ambiguous shit to save her like 3+ years in advance

Seeing Callum's S4 design for the first time and noting that the circlets around his wrists invoke chain symbolism but thinking "Nah him and Rayla being in chains like tarot cards will just be metaphoric right". Haha, no!

Ezran as the embodiment of Justice / the series' Witness (hell yeah thank you 4x03 & TOX for making Justice his highest value)

Predicting Rayla's entire arc 2 arc thus far re: her paranoid and restless nature being what puts them on the path to finding Viren and her wanting a rematch, the coins, and her self worth issues, written March 2020 (months before TTM came out)

Callum and Viren as each other's primary foils (begun before this but started being highlighted further from Nov 2019 onwards with specifically thinking that S4, as opposed to s3, would crank it up to an 11)

Rayla and Callum's whole ass light-dark motif that I thought would be a fun consistency in the background rather than a whole ass arc defining Thing

Characterization wise but Ezran as an Enneagram Nine The Peacemaker personality wise (once again thank u 4x03)

Back in Aug 2021 I noticed that bloodbending had thematic similarities to dark magic (in terms of framing, notions of control & agency) but again, didn't think it'd amount to literal likewise puppeteering (Aaravos is/was even imprisoned like Hama too!)

Seeing parallels between dark magic and thematic/metaphorical cannibalism / positing Aaravos as a cannibal in a fic I wrote in 2019 but never ever thinking it'd be more than metaphorical bc kids show, am I right? (when I tell you I screamed)

Like 3 weeks post s3 I came up with Political Trio Theory in which Ezran and Rayla are at odds about something and Callum is caught in the middle, as he agrees more with Rayla but feels like he should side more with Ezran, which an Ezran / trio centric conflict along those lines seems to be what we're going to get personally with Runaan / the coins in future seasons

Which, not only is it mostly to keep my English major-y brain sharp and my enclosure enriched (parallels are my perpetual hamster wheel), but it's also like... obviously predicting from theme/motifs isn't perfect, but it does mean you have all the right pieces. Then it just comes from running through the options to assemble what the puzzle might look like, & also thinking through the constraints of structure and run time (ergo I wasn't surprised when Callum didn't figure out the mirror himself in early S4 cause I just didn't think the show would have time for that kind of slow build).

Like following S2 I never really thought Callum's journey with dark magic was precisely over, firstly because I saw him absolutely as someone who would do dark magic / things he morally is against again if put in the exact circumstances he was in S5 (hence the CHET predictions post up above), but also because as our primary mage character and with dark magic being the core ethical dilemma for mage characters in the show, it just didn't make sense to assume that it'd be entirely resolved with a neat little bow 2/6 (since at the time we thought it'd be 6 seasons) in. Like - what? So that's something from an analytical standpoint of characterization, theme, and structure, for example, and TDP gives us a decent amount of time to get used to all those things especially in the first three seasons and then we can kind of build our predictions neatly from there.

So what usually happens is that I'll have a passing thought / gut reaction, think "huh maybe it's something," and then actually think about it for like 2 days to 2 weeks and realize that it loops back in with a lot of other stray thoughts and that there's something Substantial there. It never stops being wild

Anyway this was definitely way too long a response so TLDR; I'm always pleasantly surprised / excited whenever I predict anything correctly and also adore when the show throws me a curve ball (hi Terry <3), and the fun of theorizing (and sometimes throwing spaghetti at the wall) for me comes down to the themes and parallels and fun (fanon if nothing else) possibilities I can find. I love writing meta, speculative or purely analytical, even if/when they're often time consuming. My instincts haven't steered me too 'wrong' with TDP thus far, and I don't think they ever will!

i think the first option is most likely, depending on how obssessively sm haunts chantilly during the gang's time in the spire of shadows/deceit & truth/whatever it's called HELP.

...spoiler alert: he never leaves them the fuck alone.

it starts towards the beginning of the arc when the entire gang is resting of course. before pv wakes up and wanders, chantilly wakes up and wanders first, too haunted by nightmares and shadow milk cookie whispering evil lies into their brain to sleep but also too scared to wake pv. they want him to rest, knowing well that he needs it the most. 🥺 and they just kind of feel bad relying on him so much. they're grown enough to care for themselves.

so this quiet and sweet cookie just kind of wanders to try to take the edge off, but not too far—going too far is explicitly against their mentor's wishes. "stay close to me," he had advised. "we don't know what awaits us."

'us,' as in the two of them specifically. shadow milk hasn't left chantilly alone since the first time they met, and his ass for SURE isn't leaving pv alone. so, pv advises chantilly to stick close, because the two of them are no doubt sm's main targets.

chantilly settles a short distance away, drawing shapes into the floor that glow golden but fade moments later using low-energy magic, absentmindedly skimming through the books lying around, looking at the pictures on the wall. pretty much just lingering. doing anything to keep their mind busy. but the feeling of being watched never fades, and it eats away at them. they're having trouble doing anything to distract themselves under the scrutiny of those eyes that they can't seem to locate.

so they just kind of settle down against a wall. and up goes a shield around them. it makes them feel a little bit safer (foolishly, as shadow milk will later tell them, because they're seriously dumb to think their little barrier would do anything to keep him away—so dumb it's almost cute!) and gives them something to focus on maintaining.

some time goes by and a little knock on their barrier jolts them out of their focus.

thankfully, it's just pv, and when the barrier goes down he sits next to them.

chantilly has been immensely reliant (and earlier in their relationship? lowkey kind of codependent, but they grew in confidence after being under his wing for some time and that codependency slowly dissipates) on pv and his guidance. the two of them grow to be super close, i think.

i can see this particular beast yeast arc going one of two ways.

one: the codependency emerges again at the prospect of the entire situation, and chantilly just kind of follows the truthless recluse like a lost lamb (he would let them 🤷‍♀️ that's still his apprentice, his child, his everything; imo, nothing about their relationship itself inherently changes. the dynamic just Shifts A Little To The Left). honestly results in a lot of crying. just this sick feeling of hopelessness and fear because if their mentor slash father of all people can just???? give up??????? what the FUCK are they supposed to do. bro?

two: chantilly does not follow him, and opts to take up arms against him, something tr very much admires and respects. still ends in a fuck ton of tears and gingerbrave and co have to comfort them before they can move on, leave sm's territory, and figure out what the hell to do now. just this very, very overwhelming feeling of guilt and betrayal and they feel like they've done wrong but they know they've done right by everyone and they feel like they've been abandoned and betrayed and. Sobs.

so minerva has her whole blood mage thing going on but does she pick up any other specializations? im currently planning out a surana who was just the biggest nerd always trying to research his heritage bc like "it wasnt always like this. mages, elven mages, werent always locked up in towers.. right?" so as soon as he's free he's trying anything he can to find out more? so he becomes an arcane warrior, he gains the keeper spec in awakening, he goes with morrigan thru the eluvian bc like yeah go w/ ur wife but also like elves! he's so obssessed with the concept of reclaiming his past that he chooses these specializations so now im curious what minerva would do? as far as im aware she sticks to just being a blood mage?

minerva is a blood mage arcane warrior and battlemage! she’s actually buff as all hell by awakening it’s a really funny situation where i didn’t even need to take warriors out because she and sigrun had the front line fighting handled. she very much priorities anything that gives her agency and independence, she doesn’t like running support or relying on her party members to do the damage (she heavily heavily prioritises the elemental school), and she’s pretty invigorated by the immediacy of combat. she’s no squishy background mage. she does still wield a stave though, she effectively just uses arcane warrior to wear massive armour

minerva is not particularly interested in her elven heritage, partly because of what she was taught in the circle, partly because she craves independence and the ability to control others’ perception of her, to be defined by herself alone. even when she does admit to the idea of other elves as her people, it wouldn’t be the dalish. minerva was raised in an alienage and her family are from tevinter; she respects the dalish and takes an academic interest in their magical knowledge, but as far as she is concerned, they have nothing to do with her. she would consider herself to have more in common with a human circle mage than a dalish elf in every way that matters. she actively avoids taking the keeper specialisation and she doesn’t progress very far with arcane warrior (again, she really only uses it superficially to wear armour, she doesn’t wield a blade or unlock the rest of the skill tree)

that being said, it’s more complicated than she admits. she doesn’t fully explore arcane warrior, but she also doesn’t teach it to any human mage except finn, who she only offers it to exclusively because he’s going to run off with ariane—it will keep him safe out there as a mage alone, and it will mean they can share the knowledge with ariane’s clan. i hc that velanna eventually teaches minerva’s son the keeper specialisation and while minerva never wanted to be taught it herself, she takes more than a passing interest in those lessons

Robert Berens, who wrote 15.18, is himself gay and from what I understand like Destiel? So I think he was trying to throw them a bone, but this just goes to show that writers should not engage like this with it’s audience online because it just creates a monster. Especially when online you only get the loudest, most obssessive, manic group. They would have either had to go all-in or not at all for this shit storm to be avoided, so giving an inch at all has ignited this mile-long bullshit parade. Unfortunately.

Here’s my long ass review of TGCF that literally no one asked for it i have opinions and I have no one to tell them too so i must write them out and post them. (also part of this is abt the mdzs novel bc i can’t not compare them and I have a lot of thoughts abt that too)

This is very very long so it’s going under a read more. Spoilers ahead!!

Okay so first off this book was a fucking behemoth i can’t believe i read all of that (minus the extras) in under a week.. what the fuck. I definetly got reading fatigue halfway thru book 3.

I’m gonna separate my thoughts into sections bc i  have a few points that don’t all relate

firstly, overall writing and organization:

I said it earlier but tgcf is a lot more structurally sound than mdzs imo. My biggest criticism of the MDZS novel (minus the bad sex scenes, homophobia, and general I hate mxtxness of it) was the way the flashbacks were presented. 

Like OH MY GOD they were presented so badly. I hated that the flashback was told intermittently and only when one of the characters invoked the past. For example, when WWX meets Jiang Cheng and a second time, Jin Ling distracts JC to release “Mo Xuanyu” bc he saved his life in the Nie Ancestral hall earlier. WWX then proceeds to be the self sacrificing dude he is and take away Jin Ling’s curse and put it on himself. When he escapes and returns to LWJ, LWJ offers to carry him.

 If you watched CQL, you know exactly what LWJ is referring to when he says smth to the effect of “You once offered to carry me too, remember.” HOWEVER in the novel you don’t know what he’s talking about. This is because the flashback wasn’t been revealed to you yet. The next chapter goes to tell the flashback. I think that this takes away all of the emotional depth away from the scene. But in CQL, having the flashback already be known, you make the connection on your own and are like “awww wangji remembers that.. even 16 years later.“ Its a lot sweeter bc you know what the two have gone thru. At this point in the MDZS novel its barely the 30th chapter or so and you have no real idea what wangxian have been thru together or what reasons wangji has for loving wwx. You just think, well obviously they like each other bc this is a danmei novel and they are the two leads, ofc they have to like each other. But in cql, you learn through watching them that they’re in love. It’s not just like”well they have to be!! its a bl!!”

Okay that was a rlly long side tangent but it makes me so angry. So what did any of that have to do with TGCF?? well tgcf doesn’t have this issue. In fact, i believe that it gains a lot from having the flashback withheld from the reader. 

I really liked how the flashbacks were contained to books 2 and 4 respectively because it adds a layer of mystery. Hua Cheng is a very secretive man so it makes sense for us to not know everything about him upfront. The way that the author teases and hints little things at you make you want to know more, making it all the more satisfying when the truth is revealed. Because in a way you Know that Hua Cheng meets Xie Lian before and you know that he’s the child XL saved during the God Pleasing Ceremony but you don’t know all the details. Like obviously since Hua Cheng is a ghost you know that he’s died and it was likely for Xie Lian or Xian le’s sake but you probably never expected that he actually died twice. Once on the battle field and second when he took the human face disease. I think the difference between these flashbacks and the flashbacks in MDZS result from the length. In TGCF you get two long concise flashbacks that make sense to be placed where they are. Book 2 because you already have a feel and hint at what the characters have been through and book 4 because the White No Face appears again so then you learn how he and Xie Lian met before. It wouldn’t make sense to place book 2 any earlier bc there is no emotional impact. And it doesn’t make sense to place book 4 earlier because you don’t know what the white no face’s deal is so it’d be confusing. In MDZS, you get numerous short flashbacks happening alongside the main story and it makes it hard to piece together the timeline in a way that feels satisfying. Ik a lot of ppl grill cql for having a confusing intro episode and having a rlly long flashback but its much better than the mdzs novel. However the mdzs donghua handles the flashback in the most concise way imo.

Overall i think the way the story is structured is very good and is a step up from mdzs. Also the horror aspects of tgcf are rlly enjoyable and honestly i think mxtx should just write short horror stories at this point. like enough long ass novels chock full of fetishization. just write some fun horror with no romance and call it a day.. pls

Side Characters:

okay so straight up, i think the side characters arent used as well as they were in mdzs bc mxtx wanted to focus on hualian and didn’t want to give the side characters as much focus. This is a weaker point of the novel.

I’ll get into it more below but i think hua cheng was done dirty as a character by having him rlly only care abt xie lian. Since he doesn;t have any real relationships with others outside of xie lian this takes away from having more depth in the side characters. They’re really only related as far as xie lian’s relationship with them. Though thankfully xie lian gets rather close with a few officials and the ones we get to see more of are rlly interesting. I especially loved the reconciliation of mu qing, feng xin, and xie lian at the end of book 5. honestly their relationship was one my favorites and i’m glad they finally said what they had to say to each other after 800 fucking years. Also Shi Qingxuan is a delight. we stan sqx in this house.

The characters i wish we had seen more of were yushi huang (although she didnt rlly want to be there, good for her), Quan Yizhen and Yin Yu. I very much wish yizhen and yin yus story happened earlier on and we had more time with them. It felt strange to have their subplot occur towards the end and it was sort of out of place but i liked them a lot!! i wish there was more to it. and that there was a reconcilation but mxtx hates happy shidi’s doesnt she, (glares at novel jc). Also man yin yu did NOT have to die like that i’m sad.

Also, honestly.. i don’t think qi rong added to the story whatsoever and i have no clue why he and guzi were there. qi rong just pissed me off the whole time and added literally nothing.

going back to yushi huang, i’d like to say for the millionth time that i hate how mxtx uses any of her female characters. like we get it.. u hate women being useful... im still pressed but what i want to say has been said many times before so ill leave it at that.

Hualian:

I really really did like hualian at the end. They had a truly epic love story and it was so beautiful, especially when hua cheng repeated his words as wuming to xie lian as he started to disappear. But, I said it once and i’ll say it again. I don’t think Hualian is a super healthy relationship. As fiction its fine (i firmly believe fiction impacts reality but let me finish), i guess bc literally nothing about their situation can be replicated irl and none of it ended up containing manipulation or abuse or anything bad but there was a potential for it to and i’m really glad it didnt go that route.

Hualian is a highly idealized and romanticized relationship full of some truly troubling feelings of self worth. While its “beautiful” in a way that hc really was xls most devoted believer, it wasnt healthy for him to live for xl like this. Nor was it healthy for xl to feel so unworthy of hua chengs love.  

Hua Cheng’s devotion to Xie Lian is a little too extreme and it bothers me. When the truth was revealed abt the Temple of 10,000 Gods I had the same reaction as Mu Qing and Feng Xin. I was like... HEY WHAT THE FUCKK that’s a little uh... thats NOT HEALTHY,, dianxia PLEASE say smth. But ofc Xie Lian didn’t say fucking anything and and i was so pissed. Like the whole thing of Hua Cheng living his life solely for XIe Lian is really kinda fucked up and not romantic. I was holding out hope that at some point XIe Lian would sit him down and be like “Hey! I love you and i’m really grateful that all these years you’ve still believed in me when no one else did. But you can’t just live your life for my sake. You deserve love from many other other people and deserve to have a life and happiness outside of me. I still want to spend the rest of my life with you, but you need to not only think of me.” or something to that effect

It bothers me that after Xie Lian learns the truth he doesn’t once reassure Hua Cheng that he didn’t have to make Xie Lian his reason for existence. Like.. idk i just think that’s rlly kinda unhealthy. Like I understand why Hua Cheng is so deeply devoted to Xie Lian-- he saved his life twice and was the only one to ever show him kindness and he’s seen xie lian suffer a fate worse than death multiple times. I get that he wants to protect him and make his life easier, but to not let anyone else into his life and spend 800 years looking for xie lian is just overkill. Like if the whole 10k statues thing never happened i’d be 100 percent fine with hualin but the whole devotion to that extent... uhhh yea.. no that put a bad taste in my mouth. Obsession should not be romanticised. I don’t think any reader of tgcf is going out and deciding to live like hua cheng obviously but still.

Also Side note, the whole 100 swords scene.. bro i felt for hua cheng, the way he screamed seeing that, i don’t blame him. I was so horrified reading that chapter. i don’t think i’ve been so horrified by a piece of media like that in a while. Poor fucking xie lian.. oh my god. I understand the intense reaction he had and how seeing that prompted such a degree of loyalty but still.. 10k statues?? the cave that mu qing and feng xin saw... thats a little too much obssession... like please.. dial it back.. im begging u.

I was talking to mary (liviahyes) and she said smth abt how Hua Cheng doesn’t have a character outside of xie lian. And she’s right, he kinda doesn’t. If Xie Lian didn’t exist neither would Hua Cheng. I get that that counds kinda romantic but in practice i don’t think its a good things. Especially because Xie Lian has a story outside of Hua Cheng, hehas goals, he has friends, he has something. Hua Cheng said it-- his only dream is Xie Lian. Which is romantic but very very unbalanced. 

THAT BEING SAID, i still rly liked their relationship and i think theyre cute they just have issues they need to work through. I mean they have time but yea. It wasn’t perfect but eh. overall i’m bitter bc they couldve been THAT COUPLE but theyre so many bad implications as mentioned above and i.. smh. They still have amazing moments. Like the lantern scene, the alter scene, the “what matters is you, not the state of you”, the end when hua cheng helps release the shackles on xie lian, the scene where hua cheng disappears, the way xie lian waited for him, like they were so close to being THAT COUPLE but then mxtx and her fujo ass just had to make it uncomfortable like that. i’m so bitter. Like the reason why i wrote out all of this is bc this novel could’ve been great but so many little things added up and made the experience far more sour than it shouldve been.

MXTX did hua cheng SO DIRTY by not giving him a character much outside of loving xie lian and being good at everything. Like when I first learned abt how Hua Cheng beat 33 heavenly officials at what they excel in best i was like WHO IS THIS LEGEND but honestly.. he rlly doesn’t have any motivations outside of helping xie lian and I wish he had more to him . Like if we had more situations like the one where hua cheng dug out his own eye to save the group of mortals on mount tong’lu then he’d have been a much more well rounded character. Honestly, that’s rlly the only instance where he seems to have taken xie lians ideals to heart. I wish we had more of that bc that scene was so cool. i wish it hadn’t been revealled so late and there was more than one occasion where he defends others (minus xie lian ofc) without anything for himself to gain that.

To contrast hualian with wangxian, i think wangxian work so well bc at their core, they have the same life goals and same ideas about people and the world. Where in hualian, xie lian has core principles and morals and hua cheng is just like, anything for xie lian. SMH they couldve been great but overall i think hualian falls flat for me because of my own fear of dating someone who doesn’t have a life outside of dating me. Moreso, my parents had this sort of unbalanced relationship towards the end of their marriage and it ended very badly and yea, i just can’t whole heartedly love relationships that in any way resemble this, even if it ends differently. that’s a personal thing tho.

I don’t think Hua Cheng has ANY bad intentions towards Xie Lian or ever will. I don’t think he’s ever manipulated xl or tried to force him to love him. But again, it’s my own personal feelings that makes me feel kinda.. ehh conflicted abt hualian. There was potential but again.. fujoshis ruin everything... smh. Overall i think the way it ended redeemed the issues it had but still there were issues and i really wish xie lian like,, reassured hua cheng about living his life freely at some point but whatever. 

IN CONCLUSION

TGCF had the potential to be better than mdzs, it rlly did but it was bogged down by the authors own toxic mentalities abt love, and mlm relationships, and treating women like ppl and it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I enjoyed this book, truly i did (otherwise i wouldn’t have stuck through and read 750k words of it) but there are some flaws that cannot be glossed over. I hope that tgcf when it does get adapted, goes through the same miracle that cql did and makes the characters more like ppl and less like tropes but i doubt it. Also i highly doubt that a live action tgcf is feasible given the supernatural aspects of the series but we shall see. I’m excited for the donghua when it eventual comes out but i will continue to be critical of the novel bc..well.. you see why. idk if i’d reccommend this book tbh bc like yes i would, no i would... well.. </3. yea. overall, it sure was something that i enjoyed in spades. especially the last 5 chapters. well there were a few reasons:

1). I never used the recolors myself. I like the colors I just never used them 2). I got comments about the colors looking too metalic 3). I had started Patreon around that time and doing recolors for 3 (and sometimes more) hairs every month would have been a lot. Especially bc my DDS was broken so I had to do them a bit more complicated than just saving as DDS. 

I know that some people really liked my recolors, and I am sorry if me stopping caused any issues. There are actions for the hair colors and recoloring hair is really easy to learn and do.

Rogues Lore

First of all I want to thank @schweeeppess for letting me spam her with Rogues lore 2 months ago cuz it made this post so much easier to type out when I can just copy-paste everything and then edit it to be more cohesive lmao

Second this is under a read more because it is A Lot

Leonard Snart AKA Captain Cold

He grew up with a super abusive father and his only refuge was when he would hang out with his grandfather in his grandfather's ice truck. When the grandfather died, he grew tired of his dad's abuse and set out to start a criminal career and moved to central. 

(He's the one who started the rogues!) 

He found blueprints for a "cold gun" which he ended up making from scratch (it’s also canon that he knows the gun so well he can remake it out of scraps in about 30 seconds to a minute) and had three main rules in his group: No Killing, No Harm To Women Or Children and No Drug Use. His cold gun is capable of interfering with the speedforce cuz it can reach “absolute zero” which is even colder then Mr Freeze's tech. 

He's also the only cold-based villain capable of mastering this temp. In New Earth he was described as an "adversary" but in Prime Earth (same backstory as before mind you) he's described as being a straight villain whose only rule in the group is "no killing" (which seems to be a pretty flexible rule these days cuz DC has made him more, well, down with killing). He's also much younger here then he was in NE. 

In Flash 2016 #17 we see another upgraded version of his gun that's capable of separating the Flash from the speedforce directly and, in doing so, causing Barry excrutiating pain. Generally, he and Barry had more respect for eachother in NE, to the point that Len even considered him family. In PE, though they have teamed up now and again, Len is far more hostile towards Barry, sometimes even being written in a way that suggests he wouldn’t mind if Barry died.

Sam scudder AKA Mirror Master (the first one!) 

He was a simple convict who just really wanted to learn how to get inside a mirror's reflection. He practiced in a hall of mirrors and, once he succeeded, became Mirror Master. He was a frequent foe for Barry and, during Crisis on Infinite Earths, died around the same time Barry did.

 He was the one who discovered the "mirror world". At one point he got himself trapped there and hated that the mirror world could just get him whatever he wanted instead of him stealing it so he got Barry to bust him out. He could also use mirror's to mind control ppl (dont ask) and this intrigued Barry. 

 On PE he's dating Lisa Snart (Len's younger sister) and is the only Mirror Master to exist. In N52 he, Len, Lisa, Mick and Marco all got fused with their weapons for a while and given meta-human abilities which I. hate because it took away what made them all so cool (I'm fine with Marco tho and you'll find out why in a minute) he's also a really big attention seeker lol

Hartley Rathaway AKA Pied Piper

Alright most of Hartley's info is from NE so: he was born deaf to wealthy parents who got him very high-tech hearing implants. He became obssessed with sounds and started experimenting with sonic technology. Bored of his rich life (and sometimes it's implied he had ableist and/or homophobic parents too) he took to a life of crime after learning how to hypnotize people through music (Pied Piper ayyy). 

He was the first person to ever successfully break out of Iron Heights and did so because he befriended the rats there and used them to help himself escape, adding more to his whole Pied Piper thing. After Barry died he gave up crime and started working to help the poor and underprivelaged (I'm not saying he quit specifically bc of Barry's death buuuuuut most of the Rogues did so). 

He struck up a close friendship with Wally and came out as openly gay! On PE all that we know for certain is that he's a "reformed vigilante" who's the conductor for the Central City orchestra. He used to share an apartment with Barry (yes for real) before he moved in with his bf, David Singh (also Barry's director in the CCPD). Lisa was the one who convinced him to come out to the Rogues, and they were all chill with being gay, their problem came when he started dating David who is, you know, a cop.

He has a pet rat called Moon (cute, right?). Also in pre-N52 canon (cant remember if it was NE specifically or older) Hartley once had a nervous breakdown after Barry arrested him so Barry took him to get help at a mental health hospital :')

(Some artists draw him blonde, some brunette and others go more for reddish-brown it’s kinda confusing)

Marco/Mark Mardon AKA Weather Wizard

On NE he's a two bit criminal called Mark Mardon (he's also white and yes thats important to note) but one day, after escaping from a cop van, he ran to find his brother, Clyde, who was a scientist only to discover his bro had died of a heart attack (however, there's implications that he actually murdered his brother and simply blocked out the memory). 

He then found Clyde's notes on how to create a wand to control the weather and made it for himself. The worst he ever did on NE was imprison a town in winter and after Barry's death he went into semi-retirement (told you the Rogues all did this)

On PE however! He and Clyde are Latino and are the heirs to a huge cartel! Clyde takes over the cartel and Marco wants nothing to do with that life. After their father dies, Marco runs away and eventually becomes Weather Wizard. 

He comes back when he hears his brother has been murdered and gets accused of the crime. He finds out it was Clyde's wife, Elsa, who orchestrated the whole thing and, in a fit of grief and anger, kills her with lightning. He also tries to kill himself at the same time but it doesn’t work. After her death, he curls up into a ball and starts crying because he feels like he hasnt got any family left but then Lisa shows up and is like "yo the rogues are still here for you bitch"

His emotions affect the weather in this continuity and I’m a weak bitch for that but that’s 100% my bias for Ororo Munroe showing itself lol

James Jesse AKA Trickster (the first one!)

James Jesse was born to the Flying Jesses, famous circus performers. He, however, was afraid of heights, and preferred reading stories of Western criminal Jesse James. 

He invented air-walking shoes to get rid of his acrophobia, and this led to his fame as an aerialist at the circus. Buuut he wanted more excitement in life and became a conman instead! He had a lot of wacky gadgets like exploding teddy bears and, after Barry's death, moved from Central to Hollywood and started working in special effects. 

Like Hartley, he even attended Barry's funeral. He once beat the devil, Neron, at his own game and eventually started using his skills for good, collecting weapons of incarcerated villains so they couldnt fall into the wrong hands. He eventually died protecting Hartley during Final Crisis. Deadshot was the one who got him. 

On Prime Earth his parents were straight up neglectful and, instead of creating his own boots, he stole them from STAR labs instead. This version of him is also WAY more fucked up and murdery then NE to the point us long-term Rogues fans got really upset at how much DC had changed him 

On NE his real name is “Giovanni Giuseppe” (swear this is, like, the only italian name DC knows) and on PE the Flying Jesse's were a deliberate rip off of the Flying Graysons

George “Digger” Harkness AKA Captain Boomerang

The illegitimate son of an American toy-maker, W.W. Wiggins, and an Australian woman, Betty Harkness, George Harkness was raised in poverty in the small town of Kurrumburra, Australia. His stepfather, Ian Harkness, hated the boy and made his life miserable. (Like canonically Ian was an abusive alcoholic and even abused Betty who was too ill to defend herself or George. The reason George goes by "Digger" is cuz that's what his mom used to call him before she died; it's aussie slang for "soldier") 

In school, Harkness crafted a boomerang. He discovered he had great skill with the aboriginal weapon and often used it for mischief with his best friend, Mick Wentworth. He further honed his skills while spending some time hiding from the law in the Australian bush. 

When Digger was eighteen, he and Wentworth robbed a general store and were able to make their escape with the aid of Digger’s boomerang. However, this incident caused Digger’s stepfather to kick him out of the house. 

His mother gave him a plane ticket to Central City and told him to get in touch with Wiggins. Wiggins had been searching for a spokesman for W.W. Wiggins Game Company's latest product, a toy boomerang. Under the alias "George Green", Digger auditioned for and got the job. Wiggins outfitted him with a costume and gave him the name "Captain Boomerang."

Ridiculed by the audience, he took to a life of crime instead.

His story is pretty much the same on PE. The only diff being there was no childhood friend and Digger made boomerangs in an attempt to impress his absentee father. Also he has a habit of making up fake stories about himself lmao 

The only one's he really doesnt stab in the back are the Rogues and Harley Quinn but everyone else? fair game. In Flash: Rebirth he and Barry even exchange favours for info and it’s implied this is a regular thing for them

Roscoe Dillon AKA The Top

He technically appears on PE but he's one of Thawne's acolytes so lets just. Skip that and focus on NE instead

Literally his whole thing is that he was obssessed with spinning tops as a kid and taught himself how to spin fast enough to deflect bullets. He became a criminal, tried to blackmail the entire world once, and was Lisa's first boyfriend! 

He was also her ice-skating coach and taught her how to spin super well like himself! He has a very confusing characterization tho cuz sometimes he was written to be all about revenge and killing but other times he was just like the other rogues; a blue-collar criminal who stole things because he liked to. 

He died eventually which I'm not going to try to explain cuz it's...yeah. There's also this whole thing where he could possess people after his death but this was in the silver age and that shit just happened sometimes so whatever 

In short: Roscoe has a really cool concept to him but nobody really knew how to write him so he ended up all over the place

He also has a Spinning Top shaped satellite in space where he stores all his loot (dont ask)

Mick Rory AKA Heatwave

Mick Rory has pyromania! Very severely! He was born on a farm outside of Central and, as a child, was very fascinated with fire. This turned into an obssession and he ended up burning his house down. So fascinated by the flames, however, he never ran to get help, watching his whole house burn down (and killing his parents inside) and he ended up living with his uncle after this. 

On a schooltrip, his schoolmate stuck him in a meat locker as a prank where he gained Cryophobia (fear of the cold) so in retaliation Mick locked the boy in his house and set the thing on fire (again, pyromania). He ran away again and ended up becoming a fire-eater for a circus. That didn't last long either because, surprise!, he burned the place down. 

Desperate to find a way to help his obssession, he happened to see the Rogues operating in Central and decided to take up villainy. At first he and Len got into a few altercations with eachother due to Mick's fear of the cold but eventually they settled their differences and Len officially brought him into the Rogues. 

Mick kinda relies on them to keep his pyromania in check basically. There was a time where he was, briefly, reformed and gained a close friendship with Barry (even being roommates with him. By then he'd already known Barry's real identity for a few years) and used his pyro knowledge to become a fire-fighter consultant. At one point he even worked for the FBI

His backstory is practically the same on PE the only difference being that he never expressed regret for burning down his house, and actually says he wishes he’d burned down the whole neighbourhood instead

Lisa Snart AKA Golden Glider

When I say her NE version is leagues above PE I mean it. 

Like Len, she suffered abuse under their father and escaped it by becoming a figure skater under the name Lisa Star for the Futura Ice Show! Her fame came from her very fast spins, a trick she was taught by Roscoe. When Roscoe died while fighting Barry (brain complications though there’s more to it, but again I’m not going to get into that) Lisa turned to villainy, blaming Barry for her lover's death. 

Her attempts on Barry and Iris' lives were always foiled. She used a pair of ice skates that created their own ice flow, and had many gadgets that caused hypnotism. She also stole Len's gun once but retooled it into a twirling Baton. 

When Barry died she renounced her feud with him and attempted to go straight again with her brother. They created a company that recovered lost or stolen items. Eventually she returned back to a life of crime, went through three boyfriends, all using the name Chillblaine (she named them that iirc), until the fourth Blaine killed her. Len got revenge on that one 

On PE, however, Lisa had a brain tumor (it got cured later) and was a tag-a-long villain for her brother and her boyfriend, Sam Scudder. This version of her never became a skater and is instead murderous just for...the sake of it. She also has this thing about wanting to be the leader of the Rogues instead of Len, and when she's in charge of them for a while the Rogues’ morals change and killing is suddenly fine so. Whatever. NE Lisa is the best (also her whole outfit? Stunning)

Roy G. Bivolo AKA Rainbow Raider (not technically a Rogue anymore but he was a member for a while)

He appeard on PE as Chroma but gets murdered by Grodd so we only have NE canon to use (they did my mans dirty) 

He was a wonderful painter from an early age but was born colourblind. His father, an optometrist, was determined to create a device that would let him see in full colour. Toy didnt get the device until after his father's death but unfortunately the device didnt let him see colour. 

Instead, the goggles could project beams of light that could become solid objects, make him invisible, blind his opponents, or affect the emotions of his targets. Angry that he couldnt pursue an artistic career. he decided to become a thief and primarily stole famous artwork. He was eventually killed by Amunet Black

Evan McCulloch AKA Mirror Master (second one)

Evan was born to rich parents Louis and Carol Erikson who gave him up for adoption because they were too young to be responsible parents. He ended up at the McCulloch orphanage. 

At age 8 he was molested by one of the older boys there and, in self-defence, ended up drowning the him. At 16 he left the orphanage, taking on the name of the woman who raised him and moves to Glasgow (he’s scottish btw) 

He found that it was super difficult to hold down a job but, needing to make ends meet and constantly breaking the law anyway, he turned to a life of crime and became a hitman and then a professional assassin.

One day he got hired to kill his birth father but was unaware of who his target was until after he took the shot. Grief-stricken, he attended the funeral and tried to work up the nerve to approach his birth mother. By the time he had, she'd committed suicide and he turned himself in for his crimes. 

Either the Scottish or US government gave him Sam's old Mirror Master gear and hired him to be a mercenary. 

His first job was scaring Animal Man into stopping his activism, but he failed because of Animal Man’s wife. Refusing to actually kill the wife and children (thanks to his own morals) he gets fired and helps Animal Man seek revenge.

He continues to work as a criminal and supervillain-for-hire, even working out of costume as a mercernary in Britain.

Eventually he found his way to Central City and joined the Rogues, taking over as Sam Scudders official successor. There was a time where he had a Cocaine Addiction which caused friction between him and Capt Cold because of Len’s rule against drug use. 

Throughout all of this, Evan made sure to donate a portion of all the money he ever got to the McCulloch Orphanage

Axel Walker AKA Trickster (second one) 

On PE, Axel was recruited by the Rogues early on in his career. He messed up during a heist and they kicked him out (they'd never do that but w/e) 

He worked for Mob Rule as a henchman for a bit then went freelance when MB was arrested. He saved Cold's life cuz he felt he still owed Cold a debt. When Grodd took over Central, Axel tried to join his side but Grodd tore his arm off from the bicep (ouch) and left him to die on the street. Axel got himself a cool sleek robot arm and returned to crime anyway. He got accused of murder, Barry cleared his name, but he still got sent to Iron Heights for other charges. 

The Rogues, hearing about this, went to bust him out and were like "okay fine u can hang with us" and he stayed with them from then on

In NE canon, while Jesse was working with the FBI, Axel stole all his gear and ended up working for Penguin in Gotham. Penguin gets attacked by Tarantula, Axel fails to stop her and a few days later he gets caught by Robin (Tim) for causing trouble in Gotham. 

He moves on to work with Amunet Black, but after her defeat is offered to join the “new Rogues” by Capt Cold and accepts the offer. Some stuff happens, he fights the OG Trickster who leaves him in a dumpster and tells him never to pick up the gear again, then Axel answers an ad from some college students asking for a trained hero to teach them some things, he has dinner with them and then kills them all. Neat.

When Jesse died, Axel redonned the Trickster gear and started operating his own crew out of an old Rogues hideout. When the Rogues returned to Central, Axel found out they were gonna retire and go underground. He rejoined them to help them get revenge on Inertia for manipulating them into killing Bart Allen, and he stayed with the group henceforth. 

Evan explained to him that joining the Rogues wasn’t a matter of him wanting to be one, but why he needed to be one

In short: Axel is a punk kid who wants to fit in with the big boys and the Rogues are the only ones who really gave him a chance, acting like his older siblings. It’s worth noting that canon never mentions any relatives for him so, as far as we know, crime is all he’s ever known

Lol. I've only been thinking of the dramatic consequences of Lavi's reaction to bookman Allen. But you're right. Lavi would totally test Allen on bookman skills and read into everything he did (even the mask stuff) to the point Allen would tell him to knock it off. Though it makes me wonder if Lavi has any bookman friends? From the way he talked about only he and Bookman know about his eye and how bad he was at understanding friends. It makes me wonder if Lavi felt was isolated from even -

2 other clan members (pretty sure all or most bookman come from the same place. Which means Lavi had to know other clan members growing up and even before he became Jr). Past the shock and horror of it, Lavi might feel even closer to Allen as kindred spirits since he never had another bookman peer friend before. Even if Allen technically probably doesn't count even more. I could see Lavi attempting to bond w/Allen over some bookman stuff. =P

Yeah lol sorry I just. don’t know what to expect in term of drama, we could get anything. But knowing those dweebs I can see how things would go once they started to let the reveal sink in and yeAH Lavi would test him and would probably try to justify everything with the Bookman’s stuff quite to Allen’s dismay. 

And this is a very good question? We know Lavi became an apprentice at 6yo so perhaps he was too young to have friends back then. The little glimpse we have of him as a kid though.... Considering how Jr reverts to his kid self while crying about not wanting to be a Bookman again, and some of the narration on Lavi as a kid, I could see Lavi growing up being so obsessed with the idea of being a Bookman that he exceeled in their skills and didn’t develop a lot of bounds with people, too determined to be the apprentice.

We suspect already that he wasn’t the first choice at being an apprentice so that perhaps people in the clan might ressent him for putting this ambition above it, which would probably fit even more if Lavi was a kid with not a lot of friends and just obssessed with becoming a Bookman.

So yeah- so far i think it’s been confirmed that Lavi and Bookman’s origins were confidential but both came from the same place so it leans more into them and the Bookmen Clan in general coming from the same place. So yeah, definitly with more people there.

Then it’s fair to think that from his 6yo and onward he was always on the road with Bookman, considering the 48 names in 12 years. If they had to encounter Bookmen in that meantime i doubt it was to create friendly bounds and well, with Lavi being pretty bad at the whole friendship thing I could see his relationship with the rest of the clan not being the best.

(we get back at it in the end, like we theorized at first, that if we get back to the Bookman Clan Lavi will have some hostilities there... Even while taking others angles to tackle it it seems to circle back to the same conclusion)

Now, we know that nowadays Lavi is more sincere about his feeling sand we know that he genuinely cares about his friendship with Allen. Which is already a first in his life. So i would see that realizing Allen was a Bookman, it would connect those parts of his life and allow him to express his emotions more freely while also having his passion outlet in the display. 

But yeah I could totally see hm trying to bound with Allen on Bookman stuff. Which could interest Allen to some extend bc it was part of his past life and he wants to know, to also completely lose hm bc “you mean i used to be part of this sort of organization?”. And it’s not excluded Lavi would mess with him on a few things.

That’d be very fun to see tbh...

- her marriage with conchobar is shitty af and she thought of herself far above to be owned by him so with 'pride of mind' she left him and fled to the province tara where the high king of ireland was which is her father. she bore conchobar a son named amalgad but did not take him with her to tara. - she was given to conchobar and her two other sisters because her father lost to ulster during the battle of lettir-ruad in corann. - he was also forced to give up the kingship of ulster to clan rudraidhe (in which fergus becomes ulster's king) - the current king of connacht by this time wold be tinni mac conri who's a good person in truth except got wicked obssessed with medb. eochaid dala and fidig mac feicc were laying claims to the kingship of connacht - fidig mac feicc goes to tara and holds a party for kings and requested medb's hand in marriage from her father. - tinni mac conri hears of this, asks the help of the rest of his siblings and ambushes fidig. first reason why the war between conra and gamanraidi (fidig's fam) came to be. - medb's dad executed tinni for killing a prince and drove him into the deserts of connacht. medb is then put into the royal seat of cruachan, connacht (rathcroghan, county roscommon) - however word got out that medb was actually already married to tinni so he is once again the king. their marriage wasn't out of love, at least not for medb. he's a good guy but medb found him boring. - when medb became queen of connacht, she stopped people from setting up fairs and festivals. she hates them to the brim because sons of kings of irelands often visited her to ask for her hand in exchange of their allegiance in fighting a war against conchobar. this implies that medb's revenge against conchobar has been laid out even before her marriage with ailill came to be and even before conchobar raped her. - often visited by sons of high kings but what took her attention was sraibgend mac niuil of the erna and his daughter mata muirisc (ailill's grandfather and mother). they visited to offer terms of agreement in regards to settling their 'ill-feeling' towards conchobar and also to finally have peaceful ties with connacht. which implies that they've met. - actual reason why the godslaying tribe (fir ol nechmacht) leader mata wanted to associate with medb because she's been meaning to install herself as connacht's queen. she does not find medb interesting one bit - medb's father holds a gathering in tara where all provinces are invited. he sends his messenger to pick up medb from cruachan. she leaves on the morrow and arrive with everyone already there. men of ireland already left after the party but conchobar stayed and watched medb. when medb walked to the boyne to take a bath, conchobar followed her, overcame her then violated her. in some stories she was already married to ailill by this time but don't go with this one bc it doesn't make sense for them to be married that early. - the tale was told all over tara and spread. the kings of ireland went to tara and raised their banners alongside tinni and eochaid dala. they march to attack conchobar in ulster. tinni challenged conchobar to a fight. conchobar asked tinni's brother monodar mor if he's alright to fight and he gave a go. tinni died and everyone said "good is the deed" and the druid said, mac ceacht shall be his name forever’. - conchobar won the battle of the boyne over medb's father. this is also where ailill's grandfather dies. mata obtains wounds and becomes mortally weakened. - eochaid dala retreated with medb. since tinni's dead, they install eochaid as king of connacht since he and tinni were of the same tribe with the consent of medb. medb consents on the condition that he should marry her. he also should have neither jealosy, fear nor niggardlines for it was geis to her to marry a man who should have these three qualities. - this is where medb began to have paramours. she starts small by requiring an army for every time she is bed by a king. - while bathing she was then visited by a beast - "Once upon a time Medb went from Cruachan to the spring after she had washed her face, a small bronze vessel in her hand that she might wash her hands. She dipped the vessel in the water, and the beast went swiftly into the vessel, and every colour was to be seen upon him. Long she stood beholding it, and the colour of the beast seemed beautiful to her. The water vanished, and the beast remained alone in the vessel. "Pity it is, thou creature," said the queen, "that thou dost not speak and tell me somewhat of my fortunes after I have won the sovereignty of Connacht." Source: The Begetting of the Two Swineherds - eochaid and medb married and then ailill, eochaid dala's younger brother came to connacht. he introduced himself as the grandson of sraibgend and the son of mata so she might be interested in keeping him due to their alliance before. - he's also proven himself to be a great spirited warrior in battles and in conflicts and sustained their towers during battles against conchobar, defending connacht with his might and then became lord commander of medb's queensguard, chief of her household. - 'medb loved him for his virtues, and he was united to her, and became her lover in place of eochaid dala.' - eochaid and the rest of the fir domnand (kings who were interested in medb) grew jealous and wanted to banish ailill. - 'medb did not permit the doing of that deed, for she loved ailill better than eochaid.' - seeing medb's partiality, eochaid dala challenged ailill to fight for his kingdom and wife. they fought a fierce fight but eochaid dala fell due to medb revealing his fighting style to ailill during one of their pillowtalks. - with the consent of medb, ailill was crowned king of connacht. she then gives birth to seven sons and later they were renamed to maines due to her asking her druid which of her sons would kill conchobar. - the druid said 'maine' but since she doesn't have a son named maine, she renamed them all as one to fulfill the prophecy. maine andoe does kill conchobar but not conchobar mac nessa and instead conchobar mac arthur.
