The Shephards

Requested by anon: Could I request some family fluff with Miriam, Bertrand, and all their children? Maybe it’s shortly after Phoebe is turned? Like maybe she’s getting introduced to the rest of her siblings?

Phoebe was nervous the day she was to meet all of her new siblings.. She had only been a vampire for thirty days and was worried they would not accept her. Especially Miriam's remaining daughter, Layla.

Phoebe made her way downstairs to see multiple suitcases near the front door and could

"Ummi!" One of the girls embraced Miriam tightly. Miriam hugged her in return and smiled at her gently.

The second girl - who Phoebe could identify based on what she saw in her sire's blood - hugged Miriam quickly and kissed her on the cheek and then Jason gave Miriam an exaggerated kiss on the chee, making her smile.

Bertrand had been watching the three fondly, happy to see his family reunited. He looked at Phoebe and smiled at her.

"Phoebe." He grinned, encouraging her to come in, "How lovely to see you! Immortality suits you." He kissed her on both cheeks kindly.

"I did not wish to intrude."

"My dear, this is family. You never intrude." He pointed out, placing his hands on her shoulders and presenting her to the new family, "Phoebe, these are your siblings - Jason, Layla and Aisha. Jason and Aisha are of my blood, Layla of Miriam's. But we do not do the whole step-sibling ordeal here."

Aisha was��clearly the youngest - at least physically of the three - with long dark hair cascading down her back and an olive green mini dress that complimented her golden-brown skin. In her right hand, he had a bunch of fragrant yellow tulips that matched her bright smile.

"बहिन! (Sister!)" As soon as Aisha noticed Phoebe, she wrapped her arms around her in a tight hug that she gingerly returned.

"Aisha, let the poor girl down. She's a baby!" Bertrand remarked, laughing at his daughter's excitement.

"Sorry. I'm just really excited." Aisha said, releasing Phoebe, "You are so very pretty! Marcus was not exaggerating for once." She handed her the bunch of flowers, "I do hope you like them. I am not sure how you have decorated your room here but I do hope they provide inspiration."

"They are beautiful. Thank you." Phoebe smiled, glad that she was so welcoming. She had not had time to customise her bedroom here.

"Layla." She too was stunning, her dark hair curly and shorter than her sister's. She was taller, in distressed jeans, jumper and heeled boots and more intimidating. She looked at Phoebe more scrutinizingly.

"It's a pleasure to meet you. Miriam speaks highly of you."

"Do you, amma?" Layla smirked at Miriam, "I am glad." The look she gave her eldest was not unkind.

"And Jason," Bertrand introduced his son, "My eldest." He was handsome, around the same height as Marcus with black curly hair and piercing blue eyes that were kind.

As Phoebe held out her hand, Jason bent down and kissed her hand instead and she snatched it away just as quickly.

"You are supposed to shake it," Her voice shook angrily, but Jason merely smirked and held up his hands in mock surrender.

But he grinned and looked at his mother, "Well done. She didn't bite or scratch my throat out." 

"She has been doing well for being only a month old." Miriam complimented.

They all sat down around in the drawing-room, relaxing and catching up. Aisha was most talkative, speaking excitedly about a story she was writing.

Phoebe noticed Persephone skulk into the room and picked her up, sitting her in her lap and stroking her gently. Bertrand eyed her, impressed by her control of strength.

"Fantastic, another one who keeps the pet," Aisha sighed seeing Phoebe feed Persephone.

"What's her name?" Aisha asked.

"I told her not to name it," Miriam said sternly

"Persephone," Phoebe said.

"I had a dog when I was turned. A german shepherd. I named him Kiko and then Jason let him out and he was trampled!" Aisha said.

"It is not my fault he did not see the carriage," Jason defended, "Should have trained him better, sis."

"Or you were upset that he tore up that caveat." Bertrand pointed out, amused.

Phoebe found this new family of hers very different to the de Clermonts. There was still a clear hierarchy, but the environment was much calmer. Fun even. Phoebe was surprised to see her maker crack a laugh and smile. She began to feel more comfortable around them as the afternoon went on.

"You are Indian, are you not?" Layla asked when Phoebe was speaking of her family.

"Well, my mother is-" Phoebe began.

"So are you." Layla said pointedly, "You look it, no matter how English you are in spirit."

"Have you chosen your names?" Jason asked

Phoebe tied bot to blush out of embarrassment, "Yes. I have five."

"Five names is excessive," Layla said.

"But the de Clermonts-"

Layla scoffed, "Do not make the de Clermonts your entire world." The disgust in her tone told Phoebe there was a story there.

"Layla." Bertrand warned gently, "Let your sister choose. Tell us, Phoebe, your names." 

"Phoebe Alice Catherine Taylor," She recalled, lifting her chin in defiance.

"Those are so plain," Aisha said, but not unkindly.

"Well, Baldwin likes them." Miriam shot her daughter a quick glare and Phoebe felt she should not have mentioned that.

"Baldwin is an old Roman crone," Aisha commented, "And you are not a de Clermont yet. You are a Shephard."

"Phoebe." Bertrand said gently, "It is improper to name yourself and then consult the head of a different family. It is an insult and well, makes us think you do not want to well, join us."

"I apologise," Phoebe said sincerely. She did like them, but she had been focused on marrying Marcus, she had forgotten she was joining another family by becoming a vampire.

"Well, my mother named me Phoebe, so I want to keep it. Catherine was Marcus' mother's name. It's also Greek." Phoebe defended, "Alice was my grandmother on my father's side and Taylor for my dad."

"I'm Greek, so I very much like your names. Pure and Bright." Bertrand complimented, "I met a few Phoebes. One was an Amazon. Tried to kill me."

"Is that not how women flirt with you?" Jason cheekily said, winking at Miriam who rolled her eyes.

"I won't try to stab you," Phoebe promised.

"Wait until father gets onto his war stories. Then you may change your mind," Jason said with a wink.

"Why not your mother's mother's name?" Aisha asked, "In this family, her name would not be as foreign."

Phoebe shifted in her seat. She supposed she had been viewing her name in view of joining the de Clermonts, who were all very European.

"Her name was Anjali." She said.

"Much prettier than Alice. No offence intended to your other grandmother." Aisha complimented, "Phoebe Anjali Catherine..."

"Yara?" Layla suggested

"Illi?" Bertrand chimed in with a thoughtful look, "I've always liked that name."

They were all debating names from Ana to Shyla to Adira, their voices all over one another.

"Najima." Miriam said decidedly, ending the argument Bertrand smiled. Phoebe looked at her surprised, "It's Arabic, for bright."

"Phoebe Anjali Catherine Najima Taylor." Layla tested it on her tongue and offered Phoebe her first real smile, "I like it."

"So do I," Phoebe was surprised to find herself agreeing, "May I ask, where does Shephard come from?"

"It's mine." Bertrand said, "I was a shepherd's son when I was human. When my maker moved me to France, I wanted to hold onto it but I became de Toulouse instead. I used the name on and off and apparently, it stuck."

"Now that is out of the way," Jason rubbed his hands together, "Baby's first day out?"

"Oh definitely." Layla agreed with a grin and Aisha looked to Miriam. Even Bertrand deferred to her, thinking Phoebe was ready.

"Go. All of you. Out of my sight." Miriam ordered, closing her eyes stressed and Bertrand chuckled as they all eagerly left the room.

Wrapping his arms around his wife, Bertrand kissed her neck, "I like having a full house again."

"You say that. Wait until they return, maxing out your credit card that Aisha took when she hugged you." Miriam snorted.

So as mentioned in my previous post about this bingo, my birthday is next month. And for that occasion I wanted to host another bingo! Like my last bingo in October 2021, this one will have moodboards to the squares. You don’t have to use them, but they’re there for inspiration, and can also be used in your fics as a “cover” if you’d like 🥰 I’m gonna have the moodboards up before the bingo starts on Monday 17th of January 😅

1: What inspired you to write the fic this way?

I didn't want to write an entire family history story that was required reading before anything for this story made sense, but also wanted everyone to know who the hell these people were and where they came from and what all the relevant history is. Hence, important flashbacks.

2: What scene did you first put down?

It's been a long long time since I started writing this fic, so I'm not honestly sure what the first scene was. Probably that very first moment, with Nora on her grandparents' porch, because I felt it was really important to show everyone from the very beginning that she was going to be okay.

3: What's your favorite line of narration?

Holding up his hands in defeat, Hackett gives in. “I will bring it up with the others,” he says. “But,” he softens his voice, and she knows that it’s now Steven talking to Olivia, not Admiral Hackett talking to Captain Shepard, “are you going to be able to give her up to us if something does happen?”

She squares her shoulders, looks him right in the eye, and lies. “Yes.”

4: What's your favorite line of dialogue?

bear (ha) with me here, but this interaction is fucking gold:

“Two o’clock,” Alle says. “Vakarian, check it out.”

She scopes in where Alle indicated. Nothing but trees. “I don’t see anything,” she says. But then movement catches her eye. “Wait,” she flips on her scope’s infrared sensors. “That’s…large,” she says, flatly. “It looks kind of like a bear.”

“Grizzly bear or black bear?” Carlos asks.

“It’s a bear,” Micah says, “what does it…?”

“They act differently,” Carlos says. “A grizzly would –”

“Neither,” Nora says, cutting off the incoming discussion on Earth-based bear behavior. “It’s got a long tail, for one thing.”

“Then it’s not a bear,” Carlos says.

“You have binoculars, you look at it.”

There’s a quiet shuffle as Carlos pulls out his binoculars. “That’s…Nora, what the hell, that doesn’t even look remotely like a bear.”

She glares in Carlos’ general direction. “Oh, you know what.”

Jonah coughs pointedly. “Let’s table the classification discussion and focus on whether it’s going to eat us.”

A few moments pass in silence, and then the shuffling noise repeats as Carlos puts his binoculars back. “There wasn’t anything about this in the planetary file, so it’s probably not an issue.”

“Because that’s not logic that hasn’t bitten us in the ass before,” Alle scoffs.

“I’m just saying, if the vorcha knew about the mutated pyjaks, the venomous snakes, and the extremophile bacteria that causes both, they would probably know if an eight-foot-tall predator was making its home in the jungle. They’re dumb, but they’re not that dumb.”

Nora practically hears Jonah rolling his eyes.

“Well, let’s hope that they’re dumb, but they’re not that dumb is an accurate analysis, but let’s go a little out of our way to avoid the bear anyway,” Jonah says. “Move out.”

“It’s not a bear,” Carlos starts.

5: What part was hardest to write?

Trying to write this rescue sequence has been the worst. Like I'm sure it'll turn out great. But right now it's a lot of tedium. I literally filmed the blocking with post-its and action figures on my phone three years ago (before we were anywhere near there in the plot) and have not gotten it written down.

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

It's long. I normally write in the under-2k range but this is lengthier. It also noticeably has plot. Normally I write scenes or feelings or aesthetics. There's plot in this one, despite my absolute hatred of plot.

7: Where did the title come from?

my flag boy said to your flag boy, sittin' by the fire. my flag boy said to your flag boy, i'm gonna set your flag on fire.

Legit though, Phoebe Tonkin is Nora's faceclaim, and there's an episode of The Originals named "gonna set your flag on fire" and it got stuck on my head on loop until I decided it would be the title of the at-the-time-untitled Norafic. Serendipitously, it works as a taunt between Cerberus and the Alliance.

8: Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?

I'm sure that something or someone was inspired by real life interactions I've had with people, but I cannot for the life of me pinpoint anything specifically.

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

There are a lot of cut scenes and I've worked and reworked pieces to the point where the original isn't recognizable anymore, but that's just editing. There aren't any true alternate versions.

10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?

Besides the fact that it's their daughter, no other pairing, and I literally mean no other pairing, that I write would be standing after this story. None of them.

11: What do you like best about this fic?

All the stuff I got to make up because this happens 30 years post-canon. Nora's squad, James as CO, galactic politics, several space stations, etc. World-building is the best part of fic, as far as I'm concerned.

12: What do you like least about this fic?

That I actually have to write it instead of just opening up my brain and dumping it out onto a page and having it magically create itself. I have the whole thing filmed out in my head, it's just a matter of writing it down and that's hard.

13: What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didn't listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?

It changes depending on what scene I'm working on. But here's the official soundtrack.

14: Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?

Go absolutely wild with OCs, it's fine.

15: What did you learn from writing this fic?

Plot is hard, which is less a lesson I learned from this fic in particular but more a lesson I learned several years ago that got even more cemented by this fic. I hate plot, but it really pays off.

What about the ones like Sam, Trend, Derek, etc? I know you like Derek Hale and I thought maybe there was a connection or something

Oooh. That makes more sense. I was confused since most of the direct next gen ARE so on the nose. Now I feel stupid. xD

Derek Rhys: actually not Derek Hale. Keep in mind, this OC was created in 2010. Teen Wolf started airing in 2011. Nope, a Derek that predates Teen Wolf. Derek Shepard from Grey’s Anatomy. I wanted that brunette suave McDreamy look in there. Rhys after Rhys Williams from Torchwood, because I just... really liked the name.

Trendafil Austin: Trendafil is Greek for rose and since he was originally endgamed to be with Derek the son of Demeter, I found that poetic. Austin... literally just because I wanted him to be Texan and figured I’d just go with it all the way and make its capital his last name

Sam Raser: An anagram of Mars+Ares.

Sara Mers: Also an anagram of Mars+Ares, because I wanted that connection between the two of them.

Marshall Mikaelson: Marshall after Marshall Eriksen from How I Met Your Mother, coupled with the last name of Klaus Mikaelson.

Phylicia Rosenberg: Phylicia as a different spelling of Felicity... Smoak. And Rosenberg is German for rose-hill which seemed like a very befitting name for a child of Persephone.

Joanna Foxx: I wanted Joe to have a non-female-traditional nickname. Joe. So I went with Joanna. And Foxx is honestly... just because I like foxes and they’re sly and it fit her.

Sedanur Aykan: I like playing with names and having traditionally-English sounding nicknames for foreign first names. Now, Danny was from the get-go supposed to have a German-Turkish mother, so I was looking for Turkish names there and Sedanur means “light”, which is a very fitting name for a child of Apollo. And Aykan is such a nice contrast because it means “descended from the moon”.

Hayden & Hunter Hood:Hood, obviously after Robin Hood, because thieves. And then I... honestly just googled popular names for twin-boys and picked a set that both had the first letter H because I’m a whore for a good alliteration.

Bellatrix la Fey: Bellatrix after Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter, though also because I wanted the tough daughter of Ares to be called “Bella” because it’s a nice context. And La Fey after Morgana la Fey.

Rainbow Jordan: She’s a daughter of Iris. Three guesses why Rainbow. Jordan was a very random pick though.

Stella Ribeiro: Ribeiro because it means “river”, so in relation to Aphrodite being born by a body of water, I wanted a water-related last name for Stella. Stella, very on-the-nose, meaning “star” and I mean how’s that not a good name for a kid of Aphrodite?

Phineas DeVorut: Phineas named after the dude from the myths... before Riordan pulled him into HoO. And DeVorut... honestly, also named after someone somehow but I legit don’t remember.

Melissa Montgomery: Melissa, Greek meaning “bee” and Montgomery... reminds me of wine, don’t ask me why. So it kinda fit for a kid of Dionysus for me.

Lila Lovegood: Lila is German and means “purple”. Lovegood after Luna Lovegood also I love alliterations so there’s that.

Loki Murdock: Loki, very obviously, after the Norse Trickster. Now, where I got that particular Murdock from, I don’t remember. It ain’t Matt Murdock, because I didn’t know the guy back then. I heard the name somewhere and found it to sound very trickster-like so I picked that for Loki.

Blance Lamour: Blance, French for “white”, which, come on, snow, daughter of Khione. Super on the nose. Lamour, French for “love”, as a stark contrast to her cold-hearted exterior.

Takara Phenia Thompson: Takara, named after my mascot because I do so love inserting different forms of her into stories. Phenia after an OC kid of Cole/Phoebe from Charmed, because witch. And Thompson... legit just for the alliteration with Takara.

Arielle Schneider: Arielle is the German dub name of Ariel and since she’s a daughter of Triton, I just couldn’t not. Schneider, German “tailor”, just because it’s a super-ass common last name and I didn’t want to be deep when I created them.

Now, not every name has some deep philosophical meaning where I got it from. Some are legit just “I like this rather common first name and that rather common last name and the combination fits this character”, like Charles Smith, Victor Kruger, Leroy Jones, Erik Anderson, Jonas Meyer, Ulrika Schuster.

Writing Challenge - Moodboards

It's almost time for the September writing challenge!

Although I've tried to make it as gender-neutral as possible, it's been kinda hard 😅 That being said, just because there's a man and a woman together in the picture doesn't mean you have to write a straight couple 😅 You can have two men together, two women, a non-binary couple. Relationships with more than two people (poly) is also allowed.

The idea is that you follow the theme of the square/moodboard, not that you've got to include everything in the board. A moodboard is a way to inspire you to write, so write what you took from the board(s) you choose 🥰

Remember: You can plot now, but no posting before September 1st! ❤️

There will be a winner, randomly picked, who’ll get a moodboard of their choosing, made by me 🥰 The winner will be picked the first week of October 🥰

You can write a head canon, ficlet, multi-chapter (one moodboard per fic) or a one shot. But please, if it’s longer than 500 words, put it under read more.

The fics can be fluff, smut, angst, etc if you feel like they would fit with the aesthetic of the moodboard you write for. Please remember to tag the fics with the right warnings before posting it.
