okay so i love Unconscience (the song that plays in Marina's boss fight) it's my favorite side order song—okay, hear me out. So you know the bass line? In my mind, it represents Order trying to control Marina. Conversely, Marina's singing is her trying to break free. Think about it. Both elements get louder as the song continues, and they almost sound like they're fighting each other. Which if my theory is correct, they are! Uh, not much else to say, I think it's pretty neat.

I just realised that the Octarians are so heavily mischaracterized in the fandom because we take the perspective of Inklings so they seem to be way worse than they actually are. Which in turn creates weird misinformation relating to the Octarians and making them unredeemable as a species as a whole, which is fucking insane considering what the underlying story of the trilogy is, which is uniting the Inklings and Octolings together.

"DJ Octavio brainwashed his troops!!" Literally false information, he uses music to motivate troops, the onward jingle is basically the Octarians and Octavio's... thing. That's their thing, Octavio uses it to basically signal "yo I worked on this track." And it has strong ties with Octarians as a whole, as songs found within Side Order constantly reuse the jingle without Octavio involvement.

Octarians are a struggling race of people that live in underground domes as their leader is forced is make them fight the Inklings and steal their power source. It's either kill or be killed. Sure, is there some propaganda? Yeah, but it ain't straight up pure mind control like what a lot of people say it is. It's more subtle and nuanced. When people say "brainwashing" in the fandom, it's ALWAYS the sci fi mind control bullshit version. Octarians do NOT get freed from mind control by the Calamari Inkantation, it is just a catchy song with strange properties that inspires the Octarians to wanna go to the surface and find a better life. Callie and Marie did not free Octarians from "brainwashing" they inspired them to go seek out the surface.

And speaking of Callie, the big one, "Callie got kidnapped and brainwashed by Octavio" which is just false in my eyes and Nintendo keeps trying to push that narrative to make the Octarians more cartoonishly evil. Callie went to Octo Canyon out of her own free will, she talked to Octavio and said "okay fine I'll hear you out." Callie has no trauma or pain relating to past events in Splatoon 3, she smiles seeing Octavio come back in Splatoon 3, she went to a PARTY WITH THE MAN AFTER SPLATOON 2 IN THE DEEPSEA METRO!! LIKE HELLO!?!? HELLO?!?! THAT DOESN'T SCREAM OCTAVIO TREATED HER LIKE A VICTIM NOW DOES IT?!?!?! "B-but the artbook says so! B-but the Splatoon base website! B-but the Nintendo magazine!" I do not fucking care about what some random ass website that hasn't been updated in years has to fucking say. I do not care what a magazine written by an intern has to say. I do not care about an artbook has to say. I am tired of people pulling that out.

Don't make me pull out the definition of hypnosis and how it isn't "brainwashing" again.... You cannot put the words HYPNOshades and brainwashing together because those two words are on opposite sides definition wise.

Anyways, justice for these little guys. They probably ain't gonna be in Splatoon 4 judging by Octavio's whole fucking army got turned into fuzzy monsters LMAO!

This is such a monumental occasion, as this is literally the first piece of fanfiction I have ever written, and to see that it's become this successful makes me unbelievably happy.

Writing the chapters, coming up with all the lore and worldbuilding, drawing the characters... it all brings me so much joy, and I know that this really is just the beginning - I have so many plans for the future of this fic and even beyond that!

So thank you all so much for giving this story a chance to thrive. The support I've gotten so far is indispensable and greatly appreciated - @nipotazzi especially, you've been with me since the start and you've made the story so much better, from your fabulous editing skills to your inventive ideas. one thing i'm not sure you've ever touched on for inkfish headcanons: what's your take on sanitization? i know you don't bother with story mode and the idols and agents, and that is entirely fair. BUT health/disease seems like something you'd write about, and sanitization is really Up There as a thing that exists in the setting

I've tried to work with sanitization a few times in the past but ultimately never made it relevant to my OCs or anything else because if you're trying to be faithful to the canon material it really is pretty much just the "weird goo turns you into a literal zombie" status with a (BIG) side of mind control. The one thing I could compare it to in the real world off the top of my head is those parasitic fungi that hijack insects and turn the body into a puppet. So the premise of sanitization as a mind control thing isn't really unrealistic, there's just a lot of other things that make it kind of hard to work with, and the way it works in the game is Not good lol.

The simplified way for sanitization to work would then be as simple as the sanitized ink having capabilities to override the subject's brain and essentially turn them into a zombie or a puppet, which we see in the Agent 3 fight at the end of Octo Expansion anyway so it's more or less how I'd assume it to work. How the sanitized ink has those properties, whether it's an... engineered or encoded thing or the ink itself is a parasitic being (the ink itself seemingly being an entity is somewhat of a minor recurring theme in the series for some reason, most noticeably with the fuzzy ooze) is less important because at the end of the day it's sci-fi and could be either. The first step is usually manual memory extraction; I don't doubt that it would be a thing in the Splatoon world as their science is more advanced, and we've already been doing that to snails, so. I do assume that would be extremely illegal unless you happen to have a lot of money and/or don't care about the law to begin with.

There are some issues with sanitization that make it difficult to work with and these are in no particular order, but the first one would be that sanitized Octolings are canonically pretty much dead, to the point of having no heartbeat or vital signs, so they're DEAD dead. Which isn't really as huge an issue as you would assume because if the ink in question is parasitic, using the dead body as a puppet and essentially replacing the brain isn't that big of a deal, though that would still probably require that 1. it is specialized to one type of host, which is pretty much the case anyway as it's just Octarians and like one squid that get sanitized, and 2. the body needs to still have SOME kind of brute forced energy supply.

I'm not really well-versed in the science of the workings of Actual Zombies so I suppose it's probably possible for the body to literally be a corpse if it doesn't need organs or a brain to move anyway. That being said I wouldn't expect it to last very long before rotting or at least so much muscle deterioration that the body just turns into slop and needs to be abandoned. You could possibly combat this by making it so that the sanitized ink has some way to protect the corpse from these effects if it's spread all across the bloodstream (or whatever used to be the bloodstream), or alternatively feed the tissues so they stay good for longer, though I don't see how this would work without the ink having some kind of way to synthesize energy by itself. A way to bypass these issues would be to suggest that the process doesn't actually KILL the subject or the body, just essentially replaces parts of the brain, so the body is functioning... just under new management. This comes with the issue of going against canon material as the sanitized Octolings are explicitly Dead, but if you don't care about that as much as you care about a sanitized Octoling having a lifespan longer than maybe 2 weeks maximum on account of rotting in real-time, it's worth considering.

To the rotting part - this is also kind of the problematic part of sanitization (if you were to pick just one from the pile). So sanitization comes with an interesting color scheme that is pretty prominent in all individuals; blues and greens with black sclerae. Overall a very sickly look which makes sense considering that's an actual corpse. The way i view that color scheme is that the pigments in the skin are the first to get broken down in the decomposing process, which leaves behind an overwhelmingly blue hue due to the color of the blood and tissues - there's more evidence for inkfish to have red blood than blue blood, but considering this is really convenient and also half the campaign is full of blue-teal Octoling smoothies made of octopus gore, I feel like the blue isn't that much of a stretch here. Alternatively they could just get dyed by the goo itself, though then you'd have to figure out why that's blue in the first place... just for funsies?

Again, the Being Dead part isn't inherently THE problem with sanitization, but rather the issue is that if your subjects are literally DEAD and being reanimated by brainwashing slop, then that should NOT be something YOU CAN RECOVER FROM. AT ALL. This wasn't really a problem until Side Order happened and Acht is apparently fine despite being DEAD for idk, years? The way I see it, the ONLY way you should be able to overcome it is by either 1. getting IMMEDIATE intervention upon infection, BEFORE it destroys your brain, at which point I still don't know how good your chances would be, or 2. literally rotting and dying to the point that your corpse isn't useful as a puppet anymore and gets discarded, so you overcome it on account of being So Dead that the Goo abandoned you. Nintendo is notoriously not very good at taking their Extremely Serious Dangerous Story Things (TM) seriously at all and this is yet another example of that. So in terms of canon, sanitization is simultaenously something that you should take extremely seriously and something that actually has 0 effects and you can forget about it once the Big Bad is dead.

Following up to the previous point - the function of sanitization is really wholly whatever. The teal goo is made largely of smoothied Octarians and I just have to say that as an Octoling, if you're getting injected with the pureed remains of thousands of other Octolings that's been sitting at probably room temperature, then being brainwashed is probably the least of your immediate worries. The way the ooze works at all and how Tartar plays into it is extremely convoluted and confusing scifi at best and Cartoon Science at worst which is not surprising from Splatoon but here we go. Taking a biological angle to the whole brainwashing thing isn't that useful (or canon-compliant at all, honestly).

At the end of the post I should add that the terminology of sanitization is also really confusing since Side Order came out. Specifically, sanitization IS NOT just the Blue Octarian Disease, and they actually went through the effort to explain how it kind of works in the dev diaries, which is wild???? Sanitization is actually a multi-step process that seemingly begins with memory extraction and then memory replacement. It doesn't even seem to actually refer to the state that 99% of the fandom associates it with, but refers to the memory extraction, and the actual brainwashing is like sanitization DLC. i'll keep referring to sanitization as the brainwashing part because that's what's clearest to most people, I would assume.

Side Order also did a lot of foreshadowing to the soul being an actual in-universe tangible thing (which wasn't exactly up for debate until now, but was easy enough to ignore and bypass if you're deliberately trying to), so. Between Side Order extra lore and Acht like, existing, in-universe sanitization really doesn't seem to be that big of a deal honestly as much as it's Just memory replacement that might go away at some point, maybe fading over time. This is if you ignore the prominent symptoms being Body Death and Green. Really, the way they ended up making it work as per Side Order extra lore makes the effects more confusing, because if it's JUST memory extraction and replacement I have genuinely no idea why that should come with a side effect of Literal (inconsequential) Death, and also why do you need Goo for that in the first place.

Finally, a lot of the Brain Death issues can be combatted if you take the information to say that the effects affect ONLY THE SOUL and then the body by proxy instead of the brain, as in the SOUL is where the memories are taken from and where they're injected (which, if I recall, Side Order supports), but then you have to deal with that being like... a Thing.

TL;DR the more realistic and canon-compliant way to approach sanitization is definitely the sci-fi route by limiting it to manual removal and replacement of memories for a type of mind control, though you'll be left with the "why are you a zombie and how the fuck do you just seamlessly recover from that" issue.

Splatoon OCs Round 2!!!

Dana (Any/All) (Captain/Agent 3) (14 during Splatoon 1)

Dana is a Dana Octopus Squid.

They usually put on a facade of being stoic and serious when acting as Captain, but when they aren't, he's surprisingly open emotionally.

She's also very tall, just below 8 ft. tall when he was promoted to Captain.

They only got that tall after Splatoon 2, in which she was around the average height for an inkling his age.

This was partially caused by the mind-controlling goop that Commander Tartar put on her, causing a growth spurt after OE was said and done with.

It's also because as a species IRL, Dana Octopus Squids are very long, like around 8 ft. long if I remember correctly.

Because she is a Dana Octopus Squid, she is bioluminescent, and he glows to disorient enemies and for courtship. (This is an actual fact about Dana Octopus Squids btw)

His swim form is about the size of the Splatoon 1 kraken, and his form while using the special is about the size of the kraken royale.

He is dating both Agent 4 and Agent 8!

She couldn't pick a team for the Callie vs. Marie splatfest, so they ended up sitting out the whole event.

"I can't choose, you're both amazing!"

Eight (They/Them) (Agent 8) (17 during Octo Expansion)

Eight is a mimic octopus, and they hail from a family that specializes in undercover operations.

Their family can mimic inklings by flipping their tentacles over their heads, changing the underside's color, and rolling up the ends of their tentacles.

In order for this disguise to be effective, their family has a very comparatively flat haircut as opposed to most dome octolings.

Unfortunately, they ended up in the Octarian military due to not meeting the standards of their family, and given the standard puffy military haircut.

This caused them to develop feelings of hatred towards their family, and they became very apathetic towards anybody they didn't know.

However, when seeing Agent 3 during the events of Splatoon 1, they felt a certain jealousy towards her, causing them to attempt to mimic him in the mirror, to no avail, due to the military haircut they had at the time.

These feelings and memories stewed in them until they were captured by Kamabo Co. and they were completely removed.

Throughout their journey through the metro, all of the mem cakes they picked up brought back memories that didn't feel too important, and they didn't understand what any of them meant.

They didn't even fully recover their memories until Side Order, due to them leaving the metro without collecting all of their mem cakes.

Because of this, they became a completely different person, due to the kindness they were offered from Pearl, Marina, and Four.

They are dating both Dana and Agent 4!

They were on team Order for the FinalFest.

"I want to protect my loved ones. I believe that starts with order."

Four (They/She) (Agent 4) (16 during Splatoon 2)

Four isn't her birth name, but they ended up choosing the name after joining the NSS.

She also goes by Lill, but they prefer to be called Four by strangers..

They have an enormous plushie collection, to the point where it spans the edge of every wall in her and Eight's apartment.

One time, they even mistook Eight in their swim form for a plushie!

They have a slight resistance to alcohol and toxins.

She is both venomous and poisonous.

She is dating Eight and Dana!

She was on team Chaos for the FinalFest.

"I'm going to be free, whether you like it or not!"

Mycena (She/Her) (14 during ROTM)

Mycena is the great-granddaughter of Octavio.

She's not an official member of the NSS, even if she's spent a lot of time around them.

However, she is still friends with Neo and Basil, and she's also dating Ivy!

Her first encounter with Neo and Ivy was during their confrontation with Octavio, although they didn't get to talk much.

It was only in the Happiness Research Lab that she properly met Ivy, Neo, and Basil.

During this time, Ivy developed feelings for Mycena, and Mycena developed feelings for Ivy after the rocket climb, but before Ivy fought Mr. Grizz.

She calls Callie her "auntie", despite nobody telling her to do it during the events of Splat2.

Her Mom ended up getting fuzzified by Mr. Grizz, but it took Mycena a while to find her, given that she was hiding in octo valley for a while. (This leads to a lot of events that I don't have the energy to describe here, if I ever write a full-length fic about this I'll link it here.)

yes i kno i do a lot of agent 24 headcanons but what if. pearlina headcanons

(aka the other splatoon ship that makes up most of my brain's space)

so at this point i think we all pretty much get their lore - marina was an octoling solider that heard the inkantation at the end of splat1 and fled from underground, pearl was a richy rich inkling who wanted to start a band, they make out they get married they adopt agent 8 yk the Canon

marina's first impression of pearl was "wow this short inkling girl can scream"

pearl's first impression of marina was that she looked cool and would make her band stand out from the rest bc of her "weird" look (pearl canonically did not know marina was an octoling lol) it wasnt long until "cool" became "shes pretty cute actually" and then "wow shes beautiful" and it just went downhill from there

for pearl she definitely fell in love with marina's looks first,, shes not even gonna lie,, she can be a lil shallow lesbian smh

marina for. obvious reasons cant say she ever found inklings physically attractive, given the. yk. propaganda in the underground

so for her she really admired pearl's inner beauty first and most

i like to think marina was not on the ground *at all* when she was in the military. definitely the one controlling the tech from the sidelines so she never really had to hold a weapon

hence, marina cannot fight. she's too pretty & she will cry

okay well she did grow up underground so she can hold her own when she needs to but she gets frazzled easily and a little overwhelmed. definitely tries to talk or manipulate her way out of tough situations

pearl, surprisingly on the otherhand, can and will beat the shit out of a grown man

well she's scrappy so she'll bite them and claw at them and kick in their shins and they'll run away but not without literal chunks bitten out of them

when marina agreed to make a band with pearl, pearl was so excited she immediately suggested marina move into her home (her bodyguards were horrified)

marina,,, immediately politely declined and pearl helped her get an apartment instead

basically, despite appearances and titles, pearl is not the princess who needs protecting by marina , she thinks of it Very differently

pearl's love language is, obviously, words of affirmation and gift giving

her way of "courting" marina was buying her tons of stuff and offering to have people do everything for her so she doesnt have to lift a finger

it worked for all pearl's exs sooooo should work for this octo baddie right (she is not right)

marina's love languages are physical touch and words of affirmation...actually its mostly physical touch lol

yk marina hugging pearl so hard they fall on the ground at the end of octo expansion. and then she keeps Going

marina is "baby i want the most high tech weaponry on the black market" and pearl is definitely "my baby gets whatever she wants laws be damned"

growing up a only child in a family with a LOT of money means pearl definitely got the spoiling but. she never got the feeling of spoiling Someone Else and she prefers that waay more

marina does not have expensive tastes,,, but she doesnt mind being spoiled sometimes as a treat i meann it would be rude to decline n she was raised to be polite soooOO

if marina's friends from the octoling barracks saw the stuff pearl buys her now they would be in Shock

but dont forget,,, marina was team love so shes not overly impressed by *all* the gifts

of all the fancy music gear and clothes and things pearl has bought her marina's favorite gift has just been plain ole flowers

they dont grow underground obviously but theyve always captured marina, the smell the look the different varieties she loves them

when marina thinks of the beauty and joy of being above ground first she thinks of pearl, and then she thinks of flowers

pearl catches on that marina likes flowers and starts ordering her tons of bouquets and starts lining the hallways leading to her apartment with floral gifts and flowers in the shape of her head and all kinds of junk

marina accepted the gifts. politely ofc

but her fondest memory is of her and pearl doing a photoshoot for an album in a wildflower meadow. marina looked so beautiful and Pearl's crushing was driving her crazy so she gathered a bunch of random flowers in her fist and shoved them in marina's face because she had to give her Something or she was gonna loose it

marina felt so fond, she keeps the dry and crumpled flowers in a locket with her all the time

at some point pearl realized marina likes it better when She opens the door for her first instead of pearl's bodyguards so now pearl rushes to every door to open it for marina before anyone else can

*bodyguard opens car door for pearl on side* *pearl runs to the other side of the car to open the door for marina*

pearl snores and drools like a dad of 4 who works a blue collar job 5 days a week and luckily marina is a heavy sleeper.

marina is the small spoon exclusively,,, when they fall asleep. when they wake up pearl is wrapped in marinas arms AND tentacles and she can't Move

whenever they get into fights pearl Always is the one to apologize. not just because shes usually the one whose wrong but marina is scary good at being cold (surprisingly given how affectionate and sweet she is with pearl) and pearl absolutely Hates it, its like the world feels wrong

everyone notices because marina is usually all over her, so pearl gets pressured by her bodyguards to apologize too (they always know shes in the wrong)

marina makes it look easy,,, but shes usually moments away from apologizing herself bc she misses her pearl so much

pearl is one of those people who makes sounds and hand motions to express feelings and marina is usually the only one who understands

marina has literally made a powerpoint presentation on all the things she loves about pearl in great detail. and she will present it do not test her

she's perpetually in the "crushing phase" and gets so excited to spend time with her and pearls like "babe we've been married for 2 years i see u every night and day"

The timeline of the bad endings in Splatoon (My AU)

Splatoon 2

Callie is found by Agent 4. The fight goes on as normal. Marie arrives with her low tide ink. However, she misses and Callie sneaks up behind her, forcing the hypnomask on her face. Agent 4, losing confidence, continues to fight, without the support of Marie. When it gets to the final stage, Agent 4 gets launched off the ride rails by DJ Octavio’s fist. Minutes away from death, Octavio gives Four a choice. Die, or join him. Not wanting to die, or have the pain of leaving both Callie and Marie on their own, Four decides they’ll take the latter option, and soon realizes the Octarians aren’t too bad.

Octo Expansion

As the elevator gets stuck, Hijacked Agent 3 is waiting for Eight. The fight goes on as normal, except Pearl and Marina are waiting on the surface. They already know what’s going to happen. All they need to do is wait for Eight to win against Three and carry out the plan to stop Tartar. But they don’t. Eight lost. Three takes them to be sanitized, as Cuttlefish breaks free. Meanwhile, Pearl and Marina are waiting anxiously for Eight’s arrival. It’s only when they realize… That it’s too late. Pearl is hit full force, leaving Marina distraught. She vows to make it right. She has to save Pearl. She has to save Eight. She has to save everyone. Splatoon 3

Cuttlefish is there to help Neo in the Crater. By now he has researched the ooze and has made a cure for it, hence why Neo can respawn. But by the time Cuttlefish is captured, Neo only has a jar of it left. Oh, and Deep Cut bully the heck out of Neo when they introduce themselves. They would’ve got more from the Squid Sisters… If they weren’t missing. This jar lasts Neo for a good while… Until right before the Frye boss kettle. The ooze is actually rather comforting… If it wasn’t for the fact that Neo was being turned into nothing more than a savage fuzzy inkling/octoling under the control of Mr Grizz… It would be pretty cute. Neo manages to capture Deep Cut and bring them all to Mr Grizz where he fuzzifies all of them. Cuttlefish dies and the plan goes through. Half of Earth is now fuzzy. At least the other half is ok… For now…

Side Order

Marina has completed the making of the Memverse. She has tracked down Eight and has put them in the position of the beta tester. She would’ve given them a companion… If Pearl was ok… Agent 4 was also tracked down and given the offer of being the Spire Defender. Which they accepted because Octavio had no real orders for them to complete. Agent 8, being sanitized, knew all the combat they needed to complete the Spire. But their consciousness along with Marina’s and others… Created Order. Which essentially possessed Marina and threw a spanner in the works. By the time Order had completed its plan, Eight and Four were both partially greyscaled, allowing some free will to remain intact. Not that it really mattered, as the other half of the world was now just a meaningless grey.

Splatoon: Octo Cuentos Lore Bits

As I type this, I am being lulled into a trance by this beautiful remix.

With it, I feel compelled to share some bits of lore I have regarding my AU. Uh, no particular order or thematic, just whatever comes to mind. I am in fact drunk. 🥴

There are effectively five dialects that exist in the world of Splatoon: OC. I guess the term 'languages' could work as well. They are Inkadian, Splatlandian, Octarian, Salmonarian, and Ursine/Alternan. Inkadian is the primary language among those in Inkadia, with Splatlandian being that for The Splatlands people. Octarian is for the Octarians and Octolings of the Octo Domes. Salmonarian is the language of the Salmonids. Ursine is interestingly the human language, as it was Mr. Grizz who would speak this language and 'teach' it to those he had in Alterna. Even named it after his species, the entitled prick. The language would eventually go under a new name and evolution to Alternan after Grizz's death and the liberation of the victims in Alterna from his control.

Among these 5, Salmonarian and Alternan would be the most radically different from the other three. Salmonids, due to the way they are, just created their own language amongst themselves and thus share very little with the others in roots of terms and such. Alternan, as stated, is the human language taken by Grizz and then eventually by the Mammalian Inkfish of Alterna. While it would adapt its own borrowed/influenced terms from the other dialects, it still overall is very different from the others. As for what human language... whatever you want it to be.

Interestingly, Octarian shares roots with interestingly both Inkadian and Splatlandian, despite the divide between both lands.

Inkadian and Splatlandian share enough similarities, but also enough differences to be distinct from one another.

DJ Octavio is more painted as a leader who is trying to do good for his people. Give them hope and uphold his promises of prosperity from the tightrope dance over the abyss of collapse. But, his grudges of the past, with the surface and especially Cuttlefish, do unfortunately cloud some aspects of his decision making. I just don't like this idea of him being portrayed as a villain. Yes, dude can be prideful and such. Yes, he effectively created a militaristic culture for his people that spanned for what can only be about a century. But he isn't some batshit crazy dictator like we have seen in our history who is only in it for himself. The whole aspect of this military culture, in his eyes, was a way to keep a sense of unity and community for everyone. All doing their part to help the Octarians as a whole inch ever closer to that bright future. Even with his rather serious and sometimes intimidating facade, he does what he can for everyone. He doesn't live in opulence; he partakes in rations for food and mandatory blackouts to conserve energy.

The No 9 Gang actually play a role in the story as major supporting characters. Their leader, Inochi, is sympathetic to Octarians and actually has an alliance with DJ Octavio. He and his gang do what they can to provide some form of aid via anything they can provide, information being the greatest asset. In fact, thanks to them, they were instrumental in assuring that the theft of the Great Zapfish went as smoothly as it did thanks to them being able to provide valuable info and aid those who went to get the Great Zapfish.

As far as the water weakness is concerned, I just go with this video done by rassicas:

A lot of what they go over I just agree with and like. Especially this whole thing regarding osmotic pressure.

While I don't have any designs, I do like the thought that Inklings and Octolings from the Splatlands look very different from those in Inkadia. The thing that comes to mind is more... feral? Tougher considering the climate of the Splatlands compared to Inkadia? If you are aware of the artist opal-owl-flight, I want to look to the general shape ideas they go for the way they draw Inkfish.

Once again with more artist concepts that I agree with and or want to implement for how I will design Inkfish characters in Splatoon: OC:

Salmonids don't have any sense of malice towards the denizens of Inkadia and the Splatlands. Hecc, they don't even hate Grizzco. For the employees of Grizzco, while they acknowledge them as invaders of their turf, they also recognize them as warriors. Sure, they don't like their Golden Eggs being taken, but it serves as another incentive for them to give their all in battle against these 'invading warriors'.

I go with the idea a lot of bird species survived into the new age of the Inkfish. Ancestors of the dinosaurs outliving the dumb mammals.

It wasn't just Octarians that were mutated by Fuzzy Ooze. Grizz basically carefully chose he saw that society wouldn't care about as a whole if they went missing. Vagabonds, homeless and the like. He considers these 'Mammalian Inkfish' to be lucky to be gifted with this new evolution to them.

Mammalian Inkfish, once fully mutated, possess a skeletal structure. With this, they lose their ability to shift forms like they could before. However, with their thicker skin, they no longer need to worry about water killing due to osmotic pressure and stuff. However, they can drown. But due to the mutagenetic properties gifted by the Fuzzy Oozes strange ingredients, they can hold their breaths for quite some time and can quickly learn how to swim in water.

Mammalian Inkfish are still capable of producing Ink, but not at the same rate as they could before. As a remnant of the osmotic pressure aspect, should they have enough ink stored in them and are in enough of a heightened state, they can use a range of Specials. These can be a Killer Wail Roar, a Splashdown, and even a transformation.

This transformation special of the Mammalian Inkfish equates to them bulking out their bodies into a more feral, monstrous state where they are significantly more resilient to damage and can deal much more pain. But like any transformation, it can only last for so long before their ink supply runs out and their 'osmotic pressure' cools down.

There is the idea about whether Mr. Grizz is even the same bear that awoke those several years ago from the Ark of Polaris. Due to the many experiments he performed with the Fuzzy Ooze and its creation, it vastly screwed with his biology. Was it really he who came up with his plan to ensure a lasting legacy of his kind, or the ooze gaining sentience and using what was once Grizz to spread itself about. The answer is never stated, but I like to think of the horrifying implications considering the fact he can like... melt into ink and reform despite having a skeleton.

Mammalian Inkfish mutate in such a way to resemble bearlike creatures. But not just brown bears, but a variety of those in the gene pool of bears.

NO, Octavio didn't brainwash anyone, especially not Callie. In fact, I'll lay down what I have thought about regarding what would spark the Splatoon 2 arc of Splatoon: OC. Callie fled from Inkopolis due to a number factors that left her angry, sad, and hurt. Just to get away from everything, she would eventually head beyond the peak of Mount Nantai. She didn't have a place in mind, just wanted to get as far away. Likely as there might be soldiers performing reconnaissance, they would have spotted her before she reached Octo Canyon. Being informed of her presence, Octavio would decide to personally go see her, along with some Elite soldiers just in case. And while she might initially have been shocked to see DJ Octavio freed, she wouldn't care much about that. If anything, she might have been ready for a fight as she wanted to be left alone considering her messy state of mind. While yes, Octavio certainly had some grievances with her being part of the reasons his plans failed, his anger was more directed at Cuttlefish than her. Plus, he did recognize how the Calamari Inkantation was still in the minds of many Octarians, including his own with it being such a funky tune he can respect begrudgingly. Instead, he sees an opportunity. By allowing her a place to get away from the stress of Inkopolis and her life, he could then show her the life that was for the people that her grandfather labeled as her enemies. As she stayed in in the Octo Domes, she was treated quite well there. Beyond Octavio's orders for her to be treated well, many just were surprised and excited to see her. Really seeing the conditions that these people lived in, she was utterly taken a back how much many who she met did what they could for her. Even the smallest gesture touched her heart. In return, she did what she could to bring that small bit of spark of joy to those she met. Sure, she did encounter those that she did realize were not a fan of her presence, but she didn't push back at all. Her time here not only was helping her chill out but giving her this sense of support that she desperately wanted and needed. She completely lost track of time and even any connection with the surface. She just liked being here, practically seeing the Octarians as friends and family.

With Callie having forged this bond with the Octarians as a whole, as plans were being prepared to get the Great Zapfish of Inkopolis Square, Octavio would decide to test the waters. With her basically experiencing what life was for he and his people, he eventually finds a way to bring up how it isn't fair how the lives of the Octarians have to be the way it is. They were just like the people of the surface yet were forced to basically live in these barely functioning ecosystems all because of something that happened long ago. If anything, the surface was greedy. One Great Zapfish would certainly be enough to fuel the megalopolis, certainly another wouldn't be an issue to lose. And even then, they had access to a multitude of resources that they could use to make up for any inconveniences, to which Callie would genuinely agree on. She basically turned a blind eye to the fact that he and the Octarians pulled off another heist to steal another Great Zapfish. The ultimate test would come when reconnaissance would spot Marie, with a seemingly new Inkling on her side invading the Octo Canyon. When Callie was made aware of this, she stopped to think for a little before coming to the conclusion that she was likely here cause of the Great Zapfish heist. In fact, to Octavio's delight, Callie seemed angry at the mention of Marie's name. Granted, she wasn't made aware of the news regarding her disappearance, but Octavio was careful about what Callie was made aware of. With her basically sympathetic to the Octarians, Callie would willingly aid them from the shadows to stop Marie and this 'Agent 4' from causing any more suffering for the Octarians. While she had no desire to kill, originally trying to menacingly send anonymous radio calls to tell them to back off from what they were doing if they had any sense of empathy, their continued success would cause her to get angrier and frustrated. Not only what could happen to these people that overall helped her in her time of need, but her resentment towards Marie and her family as whole. This boiling rage that would eventually culminate in the final battle.

So yeah, Octavio basically emotionally manipulates Callie. Not only giving her what she wanted but turning her own anger against those that she considered family. I mean think about it, dude is a leader. They need to be able to say the right words to get people to do things. No need for any dumb brainwash crap.

With that said, Callie did help with designing the new outfits for the Octarian Army, even designing her own outfit to fit in more with them. While she had no rank, she basically was treated like an Elite Soldier due to her own skills being formidable. Even with this unofficial rank, Callie never tried to abuse any privileges this would entail.

One of the driving factors that made Grizz initiate his plans was the fear of death. Unlike Judd and Lil Judd, he was not biologically immortal. And with the heightened intelligence 'gifted' to him via the experiments of the humans, he had the existential dread of not only death, but of having no way to pass on a legacy. With no other bears alive, he couldn't continue a lineage as was natural for all creatures to pass on their genetic material. In a sense, this idea of a new age of mammals/bears, the mutations of the Inkfish was his way to leave a lasting legacy on the world. Though however much of that initial spark is left is unknown considering how much the ooze mutated his own biology.

Salmonids have a folk story about 'The beast that came from the night sky ocean.' Basically, it is a recounting of their kind's first encounter with Mr. Grizz when he had just walked out of the wreckage of the Ark of Polaris. Yeah, his first encounter with life on Earth was the Salmonids. Not the best first impression. Even with the tech of the Octarians, many were slaughtered and feasted on by the brown beast.

Yeah... that is about it. I am super tired and trying to sober up before sleep. I hope you enjoyed this Lore Bit. I'd be happy to elaborate on some stuff. :)

MY GIRL AAHHH SHES BACK!! okay SO. inkopolis square. but dead. its a bleached coral forest basically. there seems to be this sorta of,, electricity thing going on throughout the trailer that we can see on the lobby tower. overall looks dope as hell

WE HAVE THE FULL FIT!! FOR BOTH GENDERS!! okay first of all what are those ink tanks? sorta looks like those IV bags. same with the outfit,, the shoes sorta look like casts and the clothes look like some sort of sensory deprivation tank suit. a lot of medical vibes going on from the white color and everything. i love it

PEARL BOT! no questions about it, marina definitely made this for her (the wives :D) its interesting that pearl isn't actually there (marina isn't either, ill talk more about my theory later) but she can still talk to us through this robot. also love how marina added the sliding eyebrows to make it more expressive LMAO

i love how we can ride pearl bot as well. i think this will be an important feature, wonder if we can control her when this happens :O

okay what are these? i think the first one on the left is a mem cake, not really sure what the others are though

okay im seeing a theme of electricity and we can see in the background it sort of glitching, so i think side order might a simulation or something. the huge orb in the middle is definitely some fucked up zapfish (where you end the level im assuming), but its glitching and then a ton of the skeleton creatures come out of it

it looks like a ton of dead fish (dedf1sh...?),, we havent seen any octolings that you need to fight yet so these seem like the new enemies replacing them for side order. though i do wonder if we'll ever encounter an evil octoling (or inkling or salmonid, who knows) also are these an entire new species? or just some simulation creature

i also love how instead of ink, its the same electricity we've been seeing used to summon the weapons. this whole realms creation definitely has something to do with marina since its side order and its super technologically advanced

okay WOA numbers. definitely something marina would implement. i don't have much to say about this but yea, im loving the tech-y themes going on. it also seems like pearlbot is helping you fight these guys since she is shooting lasers at them. if she's sorta like small fry, i wonder if we will ever get to use her as a bomb, or if she is automatic

i am a huge dedf1sh fan and i have quite a few theories about her, so i hope she is an important character in the story of side order and we get some backstory

Rambling about Marina and Relatability...

I've said in the past that i relate heavily to Marie, but as i think about it further.... I think i relate more to Marina... I just read through this incredible twitter thread by @ _CSenpai_ which i shall leave at the end, but it got me to really think... "huh... Marina is kinda me fr." (Also I'm gonna get pretty personal in this post so keep that in mind too.)

Marina has very serious special interests and clearly spends a lot of time researching and engaging in these interests. She gets VERY excited when someone mentions anything remotely about her interests and takes them seriously. Which is something i do as if someone even remotely mentions Splatoon out of the blue, my chest will go "BZZZTTTT" and i get the tingles and i wanna run around my room.

She's very into machinery, video games, music and manga/comic books. Marina stays up and overworks herself when it comes to music and her interests, which is shown in the dev diaries and chat logs in Side Order and Octo Expansion. This is something i tend to do as well as I consume my special interests way into the night and i can't go to bed because I'm so damn energized. Sometimes i become so focused that i don't even notice that time has passed by for so long and before i even realise it... It's 2pm and now i want lunch.

She corrects Pearl on wizards which reminds me of the kind of stuff i say during my rambles about Callie and her arc in Splatoon 2... I get VERY picky when it comes to people using ahem.... certain words when describing the events that took place.

In the Hero vs. Villain Splatfest, she is the only one who is taking it very seriously while everyone else is smiling or expressing anger.

She's using a god damn GAMECUBE CONTROLLER AND A HEADSET! She's literally me oh my god. When i go over for parties and celebrations and someone brings out a Switch and we play Smash Bros or Mario Kart? I take that shit seriously and i can't tone back my skill level and just have fun.

Also Marina is known to have sensitivity to certain food textures including mayo and pulp in orange juice. Now i LOVE mayo personally but i HATEEEE stuff in my drinks. I am a massive texture eater and i will avoid stuff in food that ruins the texture. When i get pumpkin soup for example, if i see vegetable bits in that shit i will actually feel sick and flick the bits off of my spoon.

Marina is also seen stimming and pacing back and forth when excited. When i tend to get overly excited by myself, i will literally violently shake for a brief moment and then squeal. I'm not joking.

Marina also tends to bottle up her emotions and often lashes out onto others when it's too much for her. Which is something i tend to do... I don't often say how i feel when someone asks how am i and i often wanna scream and break something when the anger is just too much for me to contain. I end up yelling by myself and cuss like no tomorrow. I can find solace in a character who does a similar thing i do, minus the cussing lmao.

I think one of the bigger reasons on why i relate to Marina is gonna be a weird one but... She is almost always seen with her headphones. No matter what situation she is in, she always wears her headphones.

Even when she's Marina Agitando and Overlorder has taken over her body, the Controller VM acts like headphones as it covers her ears!

Now this detail about her wearing her headphones almost often might seem minor, but to me it makes me love Marina even more. I always constantly wear headphones and it's due to various different reasons. First is because i love listening to music and enjoying background noise, second, it dampens the sounds around me as i can be pretty sensitive to certain sounds. And third... well... let's just say that i live with a uh.... loud parent who... gets pretty angry, NOT AT ME! THANKFULLY! BUT... when they scream... and swear... i put on my headphones and wait for the noise to go by. It's a comfort thing for me and helps get through those... rough periods... Marina wearing those headphones often and not being judged for it, makes me feel, happy...

...uh... yeah.

ANYWAYS! Another big thing i relate with Marina on is her want for order and balance in her life. She doesn't like massive changes in her routine and wants to maintain the balance in her life.

i do not like it when my routine suddenly changes and i get upset and angry. I have a strict routine and when it gets fucked over oh MAN OH MANNNN!!!!!!!!!!!

And that last point about feeling safe and secure, as i mentioned earlier with the third point about wearing headphones... I wanna feel safe and secure... I want to feel calm... I don't want someone to suddenly shout or get upset or for my routine to change and i can't do anything about it...

The only thing i don't relate with Marina on is well... Looks. Listen, i ain't no tall black octopus woman with a noticeable figure and a pretty face HAHAHAHA! I find it kind of funny that I'm able to relate SO MUCH to someone like her when I'm some 20 year old dude who looks nowhere NEAR like her. Except for maybe height i don't know.

However, i will say, i actually don't act this excited in person, i tend to be very shy and reserved in person compared to my online behaviour. I say words in a dry manner and i don't have the best social skills. So i guess that's where the relatability for Marie comes in as well. I'm a heavy introvert and despite my need for wanting to connect to others, i would rather stay indoors than go out and meet new people to start friendships or potentially a romantic relationship... like that's ever gonna happen anyways...................

I got two brain cells. It's them.

So anyways, that was all i wanted to say! I love Marina and she's my second favourite Idol, you can probably guess who's number 1 but i ain't talking about... her... well not today anyways.
