Here today I'm going to talk about an Octonauts topic I find particularly interesting.

Anthro vs. Feral!!!

Now, to start off, what is anthro vs. feral?

It refers to how in the show there are people like the crew who walk on two legs and are generally anthropomorphic, while also having other regular creatures.

And while, yes, this is just an overlooked stylistic choice, I like to feel like there could be more to it than just that.

I like to believe that anthro vs. feral is simply a lifestyle choice, and that there isn't any biological difference between them.

Anthros choose to walk on two legs, wear clothes, not hunt (I feel it'd be common to be vegan, I'll expand on that later), and live in villages, towns, or cities.

While ferals choose to live in the wild, hunt, and fend for themselves in the natural way they've been given.

Of course there is some overlap between them (anthro and feral acting more as a spectrum), like some ferals wear clothes, puffins live in sorts of villages, some anthros eat meat, Professor Natquik's family has a den, it's not really a solid thing.

Now, I mentioned that anthros can live in cities, what do I mean by that? I feel anthros have villages, towns, and cities just like us. Sprawling communities with many diverse species (think Zootopia!). Being vegetarian and vegan is probably pretty common for people in these sorts of places, with many supplements to help support all creatures and their natural diets. These cities are also where things like schools and colleges would be (that's how people like Peso can even become doctors).

As for ferals and their way of life, it'd probably be a lot like how it is in the wild (and in the show!). They hunt, live in dens/nests/whatever, and live life that way. Trade between anthros and ferals are also probably pretty common.

So, all of this to say, I personally see anthro vs. feral as a lifestyle choice, not a biological one. With my art I try to show that all anthros are just animals standing up. I also try to show that they still are the regular size of their animal, but it can sometimes complicate things. I've been rethinking some designs to show this better (and also finding specific species that work with the sizes I want).

THIS IS SO PEAK !!!! I love Shellington so much! He's honestly one of my all-time favorite characters !!! <3333

Shellington stims a LOT, usually by fidgeting with the strap of his bag, tapping his paws together, or holding his paws up in the "raptor hands" pose (very common in autistic people).

He has a special interest in marine biology! He's the marine biologist on the ship, he spends 98% of his time in his lab—he even has his bed in there. He talks about his interest constantly, throwing it into every conversation any way he can, and he gets very excited at the possibility of discovering something new. Most of his personal episodes are focused on him freaking out about something fishy. He easily gets overwhelmed/confused/messy when he's excited, like in The Immortal Jellyfish, and he'll start forgetting or mixing words together.

Speaking of him speaking; he talks more awkwardly when he talks about anything else besides marine life. And like Captain Barnacles, he also speaks fairly monotone, unless he's infodumping—because then he'll talk really fast. Sometimes he speaks very slowly/quietly, and a lot of the time he skips saying certain things entirely, even if it's important.

He takes things extremely literally. He does this for the entirety of Operation Co-operation. He misses social cues frequently, and seems to lack self-awareness sometimes; like whenever he crashes a Gup, breaks something, falls asleep at the wheel (or even standing up), etc. He needs direct instructions or a step-by-step to understand orders, and he needs to be asked very specific questions or else he's more likely to leave something out.

He likes to sort things! He likes to make lists, he has a giant wall of shells in his lab that are all labeled neatly, he sorted the coral pieces by colour in the Dolphin Reef Rescue even though he didn't need to, he sings a perfectly alphabetical song to Tunip to teach him about sea creatures.

He seems to have a unique skill in linguistics, as he's the only one who can understand the Vegimals, and the Jawfish when his mouth's full.

He avoids eye contact, and usually has a wide-eyed blank expression, yet it's never assumed that he isn't listening. He looks around the room a lot too.

He can't drive, which is a common struggle for a lot of different neurodivergent people. Autistic people usually struggle with the amount of concentration it takes, the unpredictability of it, and for some it could be a motor control/reaction speed issue. Shellington seems to struggle with all of these.

My theory for the movie: Octonauts and The Crisis of the Tsunami

Warning: Trailers of the movie will be mentioned, just in case you consider it as a spoiler. Also Injury warning on the artwork

From the trailers I've seen of the movie, I theorise that:

- Captain Barnacles' amnesia would cause him to think that he's the captain of the treasure ship that was seen in the trailers

- Not recognising the Octonauts, he'll see them as rival pirates trying to steal the treasure, making him protect it

- It will be Kwazii who'll jog Captain Barnacles' memories back

I might be wrong on this one but the concept of this theory is such an intriguing idea to me.

Him not recognising his own crew has so much angst. I wanna watch this movie so bad. T^T

Small details in the Octonauts #11

Remember the episode "The Crab & Urchin"? As for me, this episode shows that Barnacles' best friend is Kwazii, and no one else.

And if you remember the fact that Barney was put on the back burner in "Above and Beyond", and the fact that in the new Creature Reports, Kwazii is not next to Barnacles as he used to be...

The most important thing about edutainment is that it makes people want to learn. Learning is not just absorbing dry spoonfuls of information, it is an exercise in our natural curiosity. It is literally in out biological programming.

However, that desire is dampened when people get restricted to a tight regimen. What makes you more interested in a subject? Memorizing some textbook chapters for a test you dread? Or watching a well written anime that gives you something to enjoy? It’s like a choice between plane rice and fried rice with eggs and onion. Of course I’m gonna take the second one.

This even applies to stuff on the internet too. I don���t think I would have discovered how much of a biology nerd I am if it weren’t for YouTube videos dedicated to seeing how Pokémon could work in real life.

This hyperfixation thing is all fun and games until I'm pacing back and forth in my room at speeds I didn't know it was possible to reach with a serial killer-style Octonauts conspiracy board pinned to my door as I ask the real questions: "Are the Polar Bear Scouts a cult?" "Were the Vegimals genetically engineered?" "Was there a nuclear apocalypse?" and the Vegimal song is playing in my head "breekadeedoodora, breekadeedoodora, breekadeedoodora" I chant. The voices are getting louder, every question I answer reveals ten more, my fingers hurt because I keep sticking new push pins into my wall. Is Natquik in gay love with a walrus? I just don't know anymore. Things are connecting that I didn't were real. Moral dilemmas are as common as the thread that intertwines this map. I see things that others may never see. Meomi what have you done?

well there are 2 theories to Siren Paani

1 is either Paani was kidnapped by the siren and cast a spell so he fall asleep in the aquatic paradise cage secretly deep and the siren disguised as Paani.

2. Or Paani is under a curse and is now a siren. welp that's sorta it I guess...

Why the Octonauts episodes release are taking so long to be released gobally (theory)

This is an idea that crossed my mind this morning. I don't known from where I took this information of China being so hard to convince to distribute a series on their country, maybe from Steven universe but nothing is comfirmed so take this whith a graint of salt.

The think is that China is a very reserved country whith a very unique culture. And the Octonauts, are very popular on there.

So that makes me think that someone or some group on preproduction or the category who decides the terms and conditions on distribution (idk if it the same group who put the money, I don´t fully known how an animation empress works), decided that the season five, along whith the rest of new content, have to be China exclusive for a while for some reason.

On another point, the evidence that the series has become very China centric decades on a special saga named "Journey to China". A spinoff that takes the "chinification" of the series to the extreme (and it's actually very probably to be a series that never leaves China legally, and that we never have an official dubbing into other languages of it for the rest of the world due to the circumstances. But remember, this is all speculaion and nothing is confirmed).

Another efect of the "chinafication" of the show, is the appearence of new characters bassed on chinesse animals. The most notorious would be Min the red panda and Paani, who is a species of monkey that despite coming from India, can also be found on China. He also replaces Kwazzi in most of the episodes of above an beyond (presumibly due to the chinafication)

This would be the end of my theory, remember that all is especulative and that nothing confirmed, put your thoughts on the comments

Could you tell us more about the Vegimal Reflection Theory? You're the first person I've heard talk about it. Who are reflections of who? I think the theory is pretty dang interesting.

Why thank you for asking it reminded me! (Again if someone has already said this out there in the octo-community just lemme know!^^) And mind you, my thing is theorizing/writing and reading wayyyy too far into things😎👍

So the Vegimal Reflection Theory is as follows:

The Vegimals in the Octonauts TV series, aside from Tunip, are completely new and not featured in the original books. This being that the show creators had to formulate new animal/veggie combos as well as give these new characters personalities, as Vegimals in the books were not often singled out(and there are far more in the books compared to the show). The Vegimals are more comedic relief, fun little side guys for laughs. While this is true, they need some character of their own, something that sets them apart from the main more serious Octonauts crew. Something to complement the shows intensity to better suit the young audience, ergo, reflection theory. This theory means that every vegimal is the opposite or reflection of one of the main characters, even tho the numbers don’t match up some can double:

1. Tunip : Shellington and Barnacles : Tunip is actually classified as one of the 8 Octonauts, though never really referred to as one except for merchandise. The biggest episode for Tunip’s complement to Shellington is the Immortal Jellyfish, being more in control and on top of things. Tunip is the “captain” of the vegimals, and we see Tunip bonding with Barnacles in above and beyond. Because Tunip is one of the Octonauts, the reflection theory is bended to more of a representation factor.

2. Tominnow : Kwazii : I’ve talked about this one before, as it was what originally tipped me off to this theory. We see Tominnow check on Kwazii’s room and drive the Gup B in A Very Vegimal Christmas, an episode I used for the first initial bases of evidence for all of em. I’ve talked about how I think Kwazii is FTM transgender, and how Tominnow being a reflection is MTF, it also works with the biology of minnows and the likeliness of vegimal siblings. Kwazii is also very brave, courageous, self confident, while Tominnow is more shy, quiet, a little clumsy. This pair along with Tunip is also in the Barracuda Episode.

3. Grouber : Peso : This is almost an inverted version of the last one. Grouber is the biggest and strongest vegimal, while Peso is smaller and shies away from attention or taking up space. Again partnering with the last one, Kwazii and Peso are often seen together as a good duo, the same with Grouber and Tominnow. Grouber helps Tominnow accomplish bigger tasks, and Tominnow is more of the brains and softer/caring side. Similarly to their complement.

4. Barrot : Tweak : This one is more obvious on a surface level, the Bunny’s opposite is their favorite snack, a carrot. There isn’t as much here as the others, but I suppose Barrot is known for being very speedy, while Tweak is more hardworking at a get-it-right-the-first-time pace. My main point is just the physical opposition, I think they are secret mortal enemies (animators I need a fight scene between these two to the song Flight of the Bumblebee lmao, the reason Barrot is speedy is that they must be ready when the fated day arrives)

5. Codish: Inkling and Dashi : Dashi was the hardest character to place, I’ve always thought Dashi needs more development and doesn’t have an overarching character trait to define her by, but Codish fit the most. Dashi is very much in control, on top of things, acting as the IT Officer and Photographer, one of the only people who knows how to operate the Octopod it seems. Inkling is similar but different, wise and knowledgeable of creatures and topics of his interest, but we saw in RoF he has no idea how to work the Octopod. Codish is a more scatterbrained or clumsy character, typically causes silly problems. This relates because being the reflection of two contrasting characters would cause a jumble of character traits, and Codish lacks the control, precision, general knowledge of the two. Also yes I see the color scheme similarities, I suppose that helps solidify it more with this being the weakest one I’d say lol.

Again, these are just my thoughts with the little veggie guys, I luv em very dearly ^^ To summarize, each Vegimal is an opposite/complement of 1-2 of the main Octonauts crew, as seen through their personalities across multiple episodes.

🐙‼️OCTO ALERT‼️🐙

After a long bit, I finally finished the rest of the Octonauts! Enjoy more of my interpretations of them, and if you haven't seen my previous post about them, click here for Peso, Kwazii and Captain Barnacles!

In a world where most of the population consists of animal shifters, the Octonauts are a group marine biologists and activists who help bring attention to both the curious beauty of the Earth's waters and the harms that threaten its incredible ecosystems.

Tweak is the Octonaut's engineer, and she was the only member apart from the Captain himself who had been a part of the Octopod's original, hired crew. She's seen members come and go and had gone through the worst alongside her captain, yet her loyalty hasn't wavered even in the years she had served by his side. In fact, her love for adventure and marine life only seemed to grow as time passes. Apart from Kwazii- who she didn't fully trust at first, and rightfully so at the time- Barnacles considers her as someone he can put 100% of his faith in, and even the rest of their crew knows that she's someone they can truly rely on with anything.

Shellington is the Octonaut's scientist and was hired as their marine specialist. His colleagues would consider him a considerate man who's knowledge is only second to their founder, which sometimes scares the crew with just how much information he knows of any given animal. As for the Vegimals... Well, Let's just say that Shellington wanted to produce some food for the crew to keep them from surfacing every few months, and so, decided to start a greenhouse within the Octopod. Disappointed at the rate of which their goods are growing, he decided to "lend them a little help", though he instead finds himself becoming a father of 5 the following morning. He is now a full carnivore. He can't look at certain vegetables the same way again.

Dashi is the Octonaut's IT specialist and photographer, and so, often works alongside Tweak and Shellington (who she had been hired alongside) both on-field and within the Octopod. Though her knowledge on marine life can't compare to some of the other members, as a photographer she documents their missions, the creatures they had helped and occasionally files or publishes any new findings or updates regarding certain species. Prior to her work as an Octonaut, she was actually a well-renowned journalist who had earned several awards.

And, of course, how could I forget

Professor Inkling is the Octonaut's renowned founder, and is one of the oldest shifters to date. He's a knowledeable octopus, and though most founders and CEOs would rather lounge comfortably for the remainder of their lives, Inkling enthusiastically works alongside his employees and even assists and advises them if ever needed.

Why is he the only member of the Octonauts who isn't part human? the artist thinks it was funny Well, some believe that he's from an older generation of shifters, raised in his animal form. It certainly has some merit to it, especially considering no one- not even the octonauts themselves- had even recognised his species.

Barnacles believes that Kwazii should show more respect towards Inkling and should stop muttering assumptions and theories with Dashi and Shellington.

The AnB S4 episode "Spider Crab Surprise" is VERY interesting to me while trying to look at Calico Jack's character 👀

Because on one hand, one thing we know generally separates CJ's personality from Kwazii's, is that CJ doesn't really seem to believe in sea monsters.

In the Harlequin Duck, he immediately dismisses Kwazii in order to educate him on the reality of coastal erosion—and later on, we see him make a comment about mermaid eggs, which Pete gives him a funny look for.

Throughout the ENTIRETY of Mystery Island, CJ goes out of his way to correct Kwazii on various things he's afraid of, showing him that there's no monsters, nothing to fear. Even in the very beginning of the episode, he doesn't entertain Kwazii's fantasy of the "island from another world" inhabited by goo monsters.

... But in Spider Crab Surprise?

He seems genuinely terrified of the "Glomgulper." Kwazii isn't here—there's no one he's acting or playing for, like when he made up the "Shaggy Sea Apes" to spook the Vegimals. He's alone with Pete, who also seems terrified.

He runs, hides, and cowers, only coming out of the shipwreck when he—again, genuinely—thinks Kwazii (and Shellington) are in danger.

So. Basically my theory here is that if ANY sea monster is real within the Octonauts universe, it's the Glomgulper. It's real because CJ and Pete encountered it at some point—because that's the only way they'd believe in it—and had a bad run in with it. Bad enough that the slightest sign of it was good enough reason to sound the Octo-Alert for CJ, also known as Mr. If I Annoy The Captain He'll Eat Fire Me.

Of course, I understand that The Caves of Sac Actun revealed that Captain Barnacles is claustrophobic.

But you have to admit that character itself is not fully revealed, Barney has some facts that can and should be explained.

1. Throughout the series, Captain Barnacles is shown as a strong leader who fears nothing. But in the film, we are shown that he is also afraid of something, but Barney himself hides it from Peso until the middle of the film.

2. In Above and Beyond, when Barney tried to make the hyenas laugh with Admiral Sweaty Sock, if you look at his face, it seems like he's ashamed to do it.

3. In Enemy Anemones when Barney and Kwazii are attacked by a pudding and Shelly apologizes to them, Barney asks "What?!" in an angry tone, then calms down abruptly.

4. In Manatees, Instead of calling for help, Barney tries to get out of the huge clam himself, while continuing to give commands as if everything is fine, even though it was not only the manatees that could have died that day.

5. In Above and Beyond/The Bamboo Rescue, In the beginning, when Barnacles asks Tweak and Peso if they need help, and they say no, he gets upset.

In fact, these are not all the facts that I found, but I think it is enough to give you and me pause. If you have any interesting facts that you have noticed about the Captain or possible theories about him, then write in the comments.
