Like, at least the next unit is on ethnicity, which is a thing that an anth class can reasonably talk about without disintegrating into Tumblr Discourse 101.
I don't fucking know why we're talking about this before kinship if you're defining ethnicity as an outgrowth of kinship networks, but sure, whatever, I'll play ball.
But I'm kind of dreading the next-next unit, because it's gender and sexuality, and as A Trans Person (TM) I suspect I'm going to be going "I KNOW MORE THAN YOU" the entire time
the best thing I got to experience out of this class was the academic paper on the social nuances of the word 'dude', and it was all downhill from there

That Dress: Zero Kiryu x Reader
18+
A/N: I decided to start with Zero for this prompt! I will be writing Ichiru's after I worked through my next one-shot request!
Your heart was pounding on the dancefloor, the cape your friend had made for you as a gift earlier that year coming in quite handy considering the dress you were wearing. Like many a female student at Cross College, you had fallen for the forbidden fruit found in the class teaching history, Zero Kiryu. He evaded many of his female students, which is why it shocked you he honestly seemed to flirt with you sometimes. You could feel his lilac eyes undressing you whenever he came close to take your papers or give you back a report and you left each class breathless. Almost high on the thoughts of the upcoming school dance, your legs had carried you to a mysterious clothing store at the end of the town's neon lit center. The mysterious store owner an all-knowing look had quickly helped you find exactly the kind of dress you were looking for to seduce your teacher. A nice wine red, the back was entirely made out of very much see-through lace. With a matching red thong underneath it, you had decided to attend the dance that Zero would be supervising. With the cape being the only thing hiding your secret scandalous plans. You felt quite proud of your own devious little scheme. You decided to have fun for a while and stick a low profile, Zero was currently already swarmed with the female student body, rejecting their offers to dance one by one. You hoped you weren't a delusional fool like they were. He was looking especially fine tonight, dressed in a simple suit that had silvery roses adorn the sleeves. You cursed the girls but you had already figured you wouldn't have any opening to shoot your shot until the evening was about to end. When everyone was already dwindling, and nobody would notice you slipping away with your teacher. After hours of anticipation brewing in the air, slowly playing with your desires and making you soak with want, you finally had your chance. You approached him as he left the dance, "Kiryu-sensei!" He turnt around at the sound of your voice, and as his lilac eyes took you in you couldn't help but feel like his gaze was appreciative. "L/n-san, I'm surprised. I didn't noticed you attended." "You were much to busy huh?" You said with a giggle as you slowly led the way to the nearby empty janitor's closet, a knowing smile playing on Zero's lips as he knew exactly what you were up to. "Is that dress too cold for you?" Zero asked, his eyes on your cape but without a trace of concern. His eyes were dark with something else entirely. You giggled seductively and looked at him through your lashes. "No, not at all sir. If anthing this cape is getting a little too hot for me." Zero smirked as response. With a coy smiled you 'dropped' the cape down the empty hallway, posing for the door of the janitor with your behind as you said; "See? My back must be so sweaty." Zero hissed and grabbed the piece of cloth from the ground. "It's against protocol to walk around campus like this," came his dark, lustful voice and you shuddered at the hunger in his voice, the way his hands lingered as he wrapped the cape back around you. "I just wanted to surprise you sensei," you whispered breathlessly and honestly Zero felt done for. "You can consider me surprised, certainly. However, instead of trying to seduce me into the janitor's closet, you should have been asking me to invite you home instead. I want to look at that pretty sight in something better then a dinky old closet." He purred and honestly your arousal was already close to getting to a climax from his voice alone and the thought of fucking him on his bed. Your nipples were tingling with want. "Kiryu-sensei could you please take me to your home. I think my dress would look good on your bedroom floor." "You certainly bet it will." His arm wrapped around your shoulders in a secure manner as he led you to his car. "Would you be a good girl and jerk my cock as I drive?" Your breath hitched. "Certainly sir," you said with a smile as the two of you started a wonderful night in which he made you spill your juices all over his place as you took his seed like a good girl.

so part of my school caught on fire today.
I wish I was joking. The way my school is setup is there is a main building where most classes get held that is split between my University and a College. The College side of the building literally caught on fire in the culinary arts room.
University students were allowed back inside despite the alarm going off because it wasn't on our side of the building, the alarm did eventually turn off but then almost immediately turned back on. Majority of my SOCI class showed up and we all waited for around 20 minutes with the alarm going off for our teacher to arrive before we gave up, signed a note saying we showed up, and all left. He still has not contacted us I think so oh well!
On a less cooler note: I have made huge progress in my ANTH Report! I have 5 pages of research so far that I am probably gonna try and bump up to six. After that I need to create a presentation and record it! And then after that I believe I have to write a report? I don't know why I need both a report and a presentation but ¯\_(⊙︿⊙)_/¯
I'm probably not going to sleep tonight because I am getting sucked back into video games but I'm probably going to skip my GIS Lab tomorrow.

Grad school!
Officially registered for Fall classes!
It’s an odd combination of excitement and calm. Super excited to have gotten here and to be starting on the next rung, with classmates I know and like, and faculty I think the world of. (Incredibly rare.) I’m about to be punted out of the cozy, largely anonymous nest of undergrad-ness and into the world of being Seen and Standing for Something which many people will not like, understand or even take violent offense to, despite being desperately needed. Death, skeletons, trans rights and scientific politics: what could possibly go wrong?
A lot: just today a major anti-trans harassment campaign blew up on one of our school’s social media sites. Everything has been forwarded to the right departments, and all affected students been offered a friendly ear, a place at the solution-planning table and counselling through Out On Campus and/or Health & Counselling, in rapid deployment - but it shouldn’t have happened at all.
As of 45 minutes ago, I am also next in line to take over as dear Dr. A’s Forensic Lab Manager when the incumbent (a mentor and friend of mine) finishes her PhD. Recruiting and training students, managing grad students’ need for bench space and time for their research, general office admin, coordinating outreach to schools and community science events...It’ll be a staged operation, starting with my shadowing the current manager and attending meetings starting next summer, and will take at least six months of handover. Because between full-time work, courses, teaching and volunteering, I will be PLENTY BUSY in Fall and Spring terms.
Time organization is going to be my major challenge for the next few years.
But I’m also weirdly calm, because unlike starting out a fresh year of undergrad, I’m not worried about learning the material or getting through exams and papers. The mandatory courses are all advanced research skills and updating current Crim theory. No worries there. After the mandatories this fall and next spring, I’ll have next summer for Directed Readings, and then a year of research and thesis writing (and lab managing!) - and hopefully defended and done by August 2024.
Time organization is going to be my major challenge for the next few years.
I also have to admit that being in school is my key Coping Mechanism, and despite loving my day job, I have definitely been wobbly in the absence of regular academic deadlines and tasks, constant new information, professors to please and classmates to lightly trauma-bond with.
Well, I wanted my PhD by the time I was 50, but I’ll take the MA. And then we’ll see what the world is like and whether it makes sense to go overseas and take up that dream MSc in Dundee (now THAT’s a program that will kick my ass, being a full year of full-time anatomy, forensic anth and forensic arch), or to continue with a social-research PhD here at home, rather than bone lab studies.
We need the social research from within the professional field of forensics, to keep it moving forward, as well as the practical research with skeletal remains and field sites.
I want both. I want the bone lab and the field work AND the social research. And a hidden pocket universe to crawl into to sleep and eat now and then.

Words from a so-far successful archaeologist (25 years old/recent Ph.D. admit)
Hello Everyone!  I have revived my Tumblr to find many messages asking “what do I do next” when it comes to Archaeology/Anthropology. So I thought I’d create a post explaining what I went through to get to where I am now, and hopefully give some information to those who are pondering on the next steps to take in this truly wonderful field of study.  Quick academic about me:
Undergrad: Ivy League, Major: Anthropology-Geography, Minor: Religion
After Undergrad: 1 year of Cultural Resource Management (CRM) & Substitute teaching
Graduate School: England MSc in Archaeological Information Systems
After Graduate: 10-month long research grant in Cambodia
Now: (USA)  Ph.D. Candidate in Anthropology, Archaeology Track
I come from a low-middle class family, all of my academics have been funded through financial aid or through grants that I’ve applied for. A lot of the time school and research can get expensive, but that doesn’t mean you have to be wealthy to pursue it!
Per usual, please feel free to DM me at any point with questions (here or IG @ aal.archaeology), I’m always happy to help to the best of my ability. Success in this field is really dependent on networking!
I’ll set this up based on the various landmarks of my academic career:
1. Undergrad
Themes: Ask for help, build your resume, write down everything
No matter where you are going to school, it is so so so important to use the resources around you. Becoming a professor is HARD work, and each one of your professors went through a lot to be able to stand in front of you and teach you. They’ve likely had years and years of research experience, which is probably still happening behind the scenes of teaching and grading papers. More often than not, professors want to help you, they want students to be excited about the research they’ve worked so hard on, and they want to do what they can to help you achieve your career goals.  Therefore, if there’s a class you’ve taken or a professor whose research you’re interested in, tell them. This is how I got my first experience with archaeology (before I even knew that I wanted to do archaeology). I randomly took an Anthropology class that sounded cool, and after the first class, I was like WOW I love this topic so much and I really want to know more about it. I went up to the professor that was teaching it, told her I was really interested and asked if she knew of any research opportunities available. She then hired me as a student researcher in her lab to do data entry for one of her archaeological projects in Mesoamerica, and after working for her for a few months, she asked me if I wanted to go with her and her team to Mexico for fieldwork.
(my timeline at this point: 19 years old, end of Sophomore year)
From this experience, I learned how to apply to grants within the University and funding outside of the University, and was able to FULLY fund my research experience in Mexico. During this fieldwork, I got to work with 3000-year-old artifacts, do archaeoillustration, and eventually got my own chapter published in the book that my professor wrote about the research that was done.
After I got back from Mexico, I started exploring archaeology further. A new professor entered the department who specialized in “digital archaeology,” and his research involved tracking looting patters in Syria using satellite imagery. I thought this was crazy so I then went up to him and asked if I could help him with his research. (the common theme throughout this entire process is just asking for help). From this experience, I learned that I loved the possibilities that technology brought to the study of archaeology, everything from 3D modeling to identification of sites in satellite imagery to spatial mapping in GIS. With this professor, I was able to form an “internship” with him, and continued doing that and other minor projects within the department. I ended up modifying my major to incorporate coursework from the Geography department and created my own “Digital Archaeology” major.
(my timeline at this point: 22 years old, Senior year)
As graduation began to creep closer, I had been able to get a good amount of lines on my resume. I had:
research assistant/ data entry
fieldwork in mesoamerica
x2 internships with digital archaeology prof
multiple “small” projects around the department i.e. making posters, painting 3D prints of bones,
all of the coursework I had done on GIS/ relevant digital experience
started a drone club at my school (it flopped, but it still counts as a line on the resume!)
All of these lines became useful when starting to think of jobs and the “next step”
UNDERGRAD HIGHLIGHTS & TAKEAWAYS:
Ask for help, your professors are there for a reason, it will almost always lead you to new opportunities. These relationships last well beyond your graduation and definitely come in handy later, make it count!
Write down EVERYTHING that you do. Did you help out with a conference? Write it down. Did you do a couple hours of data entry? Write it down.
Follow your leads! I started my anth journey in Mesoamerica and ended my undergrad in Near Easter digital archaeology (and I entered college wanting to do astronomy?). Change is natural, let it happen.
2. Gap Year Between Undergrad and Grad School
Highlights: Job applications, field school, CRM, uncertainty
Something that I was always told during my undergrad was that you really need to do a field school and some CRM to be taken seriously post-grad. This shows that you actually want to be an archaeologist outside of the classroom environment. Field Schools and CRM give you valuable experience such as: excavation methodology, report writing, grant applications, teamwork, leadership, etc.
I started applying for jobs probably about 5 months before I graduated and ended up securing a job at a CRM company in LA. They liked how much I had done during my undergrad, but they really wanted me to have a field school under my belt before I started working for them. Because I had already graduated and didn’t need course credit, I was able to do my field school at a discounted price (these things really do get expensive, and this was a difference of about $2k). I think this worked out in my favor waiting until the summer after I graduated because it saved me a lot of money in the end.
After my field school was done, I started work that September in CRM. This job ended up being nothing like what I thought it would be, to be honest. I was an Archaeological Field Technician that was part-time/on-call, meaning I only got work when they needed someone to go monitor a construction site. I only got work once every month, sometimes every couple of months, so I was making hardly any money. I realized this quickly and decided to become a substitute teacher to supplement the CRM job. I HIGHLY recommend doing this if you end up in the same situation. Not only does subbing fill up all of your non-working days, but it also gives you the flexibility to choose when you can work and gives you teaching experience that you can put on your resume. That CRM experience can be really important, so it’s good to stick it out long enough to quit.
Why didn’t I like CRM? For me, my job was very sparse, included driving long hours to a construction site, sitting there all day in case archaeological material popped up, and then driving home. Sometimes it was just walking back and forth across a massive field full of cow poop looking for arrowheads, and often it felt like I was just clearing land so that a big building could be erected. I was really missing the research component to all of it. The pay was also not great.
GAP YEAR HIGHLIGHTS AND TAKEAWAYS:
What I got from this year was very valuable, even though it wasn’t necessarily that fun, however.
I got the experience I needed in CRM
I got some teaching experience (also volunteered to mentor clubs and research at local high schools during this time)
I started doing some networking (I found some alumni that were doing work that I wanted to be doing and reached out to them)
and most importantly, I realized that I really do love school and wanted to go back for my Masters
So I started looking into Masters's programs. This is kind of a scary thing especially in the US because school is expensive. I still really wanted to do Digital Archaeology, and I couldn’t find a single program in the US had a focus in this topic, and especially couldn’t find one that I was willing to pay for.
The UK, however, had plenty of Digital Archaeology programs, and the programs were only a year long and a fraction of the price in the US. I decided to take a chance and apply, got in, and then suddenly I was moving to England. (in hindsight I really didn’t spend much time at all making this decision, but it worked out in the end).
3. Masters Program
(my timeline at this point: 23-24 years old)
I chose the program I applied to based on its focus on the techniques that I wanted to use, namely, remote sensing, GIS, and 3D modeling. I really wanted a degree qualification that spoke for itself, and therefore applied for an MSc in “Archaeological Information Systems.”
I had done some networking during my gap year and connected with an alumnus who was doing research in Cambodia using digital methods, and she offered me the opportunity to join her fieldwork. I agreed to join her in Cambodia during my degree, and also applied for a research grant for the year following my master's degree to continue fieldwork in Cambodia.
I used this opportunity to fuel my dissertation topic and focused all of my writing and coursework throughout my grad school experience around Cambodia. While I was surrounded by people studying Roman architecture and Medieval Studies, I spent my time doing independent work and building a network in Cambodia.
This program was a great experience for the most part, I was surrounded by beautiful medieval architecture and had a great community throughout. I personally didn’t really like the UK school system compared to what I had received in the US, however. This was largely because of the way coursework was set up. (If you want to know more just DM me).
MASTERS HIGHLIGHTS AND TAKEAWAYS:
Follow networking opportunities, and find someone doing what you want to do (or close to it) and let them help you take the steps to get there
If you’re going to do grad school, do it in something you know you love. Don’t waste money on a program that isn’t right for you.
Make sure that the program you apply to allows for flexibility so that you can do research on what YOU want, not what THEY want.
Halfway through my Master's degree, I received word that I had been accepted for the research grant (Fulbright) and would spend the next year living in Cambodia doing independent research.
4. Gap Year Between Masters Program and PhD
If you’re planning on a Ph.D., I think its a really good idea to do something before applying that relates to what you want to be studying. This shows that you’re dedicated to your research and to a life in academia, and have the ability to produce something from your work.
My master's degree was nice because 1) it was short, only a year-long, and 2) allowed me to focus research on what I was interested in. This gave me the experience I needed to lead into a year of independent research.
This year of independent research was definitely contingent on receiving the grant in the first place, and I think that I would have started job searching again had I not received it. However, the small things I did leading up to applying for it really helped in qualifying me to receive it.
     I had:
All of the undergraduate research experience
CRM experience
teaching experience
fieldwork experience
a master’s degree that focused on the region
established a network of people in the country beforehand
a couple “publications” from fieldwork
This grant fully funds me living in Cambodia, and has allowed me to participate in cultural exchange with some amazing people here in addition to allowing me to partake in archaeological fieldwork across the country.
Again, I cannot stress enough how important it is to network. If you like something, find someone else who likes the same thing, send them an email.
Networking got me my experience in Mesoamerica, Digital Archaeology, my CRM job, my research experience in Cambodia, and so so much more. All because I sent that first email.
5. PhD Applications
I applied to 1 school. I got in. Its a really good school. I’m still in shock.
However, I think I really did set myself up for success in this one.
The biggest advice I can give in the world of Academia is:
NETWORK
Talking to people who have gone through what you’re going through are the BEST help. They can mentor you through these experiences, offer you new opportunities, or lead you in the direction of someone else who can help.
PLAN AHEAD (but be open to change)
Okay, so you’re applying to grad school. What do you want to focus on while you’re there? What do you want to do with the degree when you’re done? Do you want to start working? Do you want to do more research? What opportunities are out there for research funding? What is the job market looking for? Is there anyone in my network that can help me get there?
None of these have to be concrete plans, they just have to exist in some shape or form so that you have the ability to latch on to one when the opportunity arises.
If you’re doing something that you love doing, you’ll find a way to make it happen. All opportunity comes from the amount of effort you put into getting it! Thanks for reading and best of luck on your studies! Also Happy Anthropology Day! :)  -Lyss

Totally unprompted ask, but in a Clone wars College AU, what are the majors for uh...everyone in your current fic?
Uhhh I'm gonna go with the characters that have speaking parts and not just a passing mention, so that would be Ahsoka, Rex, Jesse, Hardcase, Fives, Tup, Dogma, and Krell (with a bonus Obi-Wan and Anakin for the hell of it)
Krell: History Professor. He has tenure and is drunk on the power that it gives him. If you fail the class, it's not his fault that you are incompetent. Will never give an extension for any reason, ever, and there are negative opportunities for extra credit. Everyone hates him. Everyone. Has the worst rate my professor score of the entire college. There is an underground movement to get him fired that consists of an alarming number of petitions being passes around in the halls, both paper and electronic. People that don't even have his classes sign the things.
Tup: Undeclared. It's his first year and has no idea what he wants to do, but his goal is to survive with most of his mental sanity intact. Jury's still out on how well that's going, but he's not dead yet.
Fives: Law student. People that know him in passing are somewhat confused as to how he got accepted for a Masters Program since he comes across as a wild disaster child. But those who do know him aren't surprised at all. He's somewhat of an idealist, and dreams of defending the innocent from an unjust system.
Dogma: Also a Law student. Most people assume he's in accounting, but when they find out it's law just sort of shrug like "yeah, that makes sense". Where Fives is in law to defend the innocent, Dogma is in it to uphold the law. His and Fives Parliamentary Debates are the stuff of legends. Especially the unprompted ones that happen in the quad over lunch.
Hardcase: In with a Football scholarship. His goal is to go pro at some point, and while most assume he's a slacker, he actually works very hard to maintain a good GPA so that he doesn't lose his spot on the team. Picked an art history degree for the hell of it, and found that he really likes it. Especially when he gets to have debates over stuff like Marcel Duchamp's "Fountain" and René Magritte's The Treachery of Images". He likes to see what the general consensus is before arguing the exact opposite.
Jesse: Has changed his Major six times and is no closer to knowing what he wants to do. Can usually be found loitering around the Theatre dept, mostly in the prop and scenery shop. He likes the power tools and is more then happy to help if asked, but insists he a shitty actor whenever people ask if he wants to audition. Director Skywalker has been trying to get him into a production for years after overhearing Jesse recite a monologue.
Ahsoka: Criminology Major, with a minor in Cultural Anth. Does she sleep? Probably. Can anyone prove it? No. Is that person who arranges a study group and can actually get the group to study. For the first half-hour, at least. After that, it might devolve into an impromptu d&d session. Works her nose to the bone in order to keep up with the course load. Fortunately, she got her GE out of the way before picking a Major so she doesn't have to deal with that. She is also on the fencing team. May or may not be Professor Skywalkers little sister, and when asked gives vague answers that leave people more confused than before.
Rex: Also a Criminology Major. Works two part-time jobs to help cover the cost of school. Could use a nap, but thankfully only has one year left before he's done. He is the only person who knows for a fact that Ahsoka and Anakin are siblings. He found out after walking in in the two of them curled up on a couch after Ahsoka had a panic attack, and the two fell over themselves to explain that there was no funny business happening. Has been sworn to secrecy so that he doesn't "ruin the fun" of keeping people guessing.
Obi-Wan: Art history professor. Strict but also very chill and forgiving, as long as you have a valid reason and not a made-up excuse. Has an uncanny ability to tell when people are lying, so just don't try it with him. He both loves and hates having Hardcase as a student because he always gets the class off track, but at the same time prompts the most stimulating of discussions. There is a rumor going around that he used to be an assassin for MI6, and a different rumor that he's actually royalty that escaped in order to live a regular life. A good chunk of the student population point out that the two stories are not mutually exclusive. Either way, he has one of the highest ratings on Rate My Professor.
Anakin: Head of the Theater department. The most chill professor at the school, just don't make him mad. Yes, his arm is fake, no, don't ask about it. Watch your words around him, because if you ask for a "hand" or anything similar, he will just take the prosthetic off and give it to you. Is a surprisingly harsh grader, but will accept late work at any time provided its not the last day of class. Once let a student perform their midterm monologue over Skype at midnight because they were in another country for a family funeral. Can be bribed with Starbucks.

Hello! Thank you for answering my questions! (and I don't mind if you don't stay on topic, I don't either) Well for starters, I was wondering what you could actually Do with humanities degrees? I've read a lot but I didn't get any concrete answers and I don't know if you try to work with museums, colleges, government, or any of them? I keep going back to the humanities vs sciences or business but I'm not sure it would lead anywhere for me. Also if you don't mind, could you maybe point out some differences between History and Anthropology? They sound quite similar but I know they focus on different things. Thank you again for answering, I really appreciate it!
There is literally so much you can do with a humanities degree, I honestly don’t know where to start. You can work with museums, colleges, or government, or even just in a researcher in pick-whatever-job-you-can-think-of. You generally need at least a master’s to get a lot of these jobs, though that goes for most careers nowadays.(For example, a lot of lawyers start out their bachelor’s with history/pre-law, before going on to law school.)
What a lot of employers like about degrees in the humanities is the ability to research, analyze, and interpret. As far as I’m aware, most colleges and universities have skills and methods classes that you are required take even before you take your capstone that teach you how to go about this. I, personally, am very interested in public history. I absolutely love museums, and would love to be able to get into curation at some point in the future (The ultimate goal is to be able to work in DC but the curation market, especially for the Smithsonian is super competitive). Recently I have been looking at going into the National Park Service, because they have a need for historic analysts, interpreters, archaeologists, etc., and that is right up my alley. My advice would be to find something you are interested in (for example, if you’re interested in cultural anthropology) and just take even into-level classes on it. You can learn a lot.
The difference between history and anthropology is that history is the study of the written past, while anthropology is simply the study of humans. Anthropology has four main subsets: cultural anthropology, biological/physical anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics. There are even further subsets you can go into with these, for example, forensic anthropology (you ever watched the show Bones?), medical anthropology, primatology,...there’s a lot. A lot of times you’ll see anthropology described as “the science of humanity” or “the study of the nature of man” because anthropology is mostly the study of the behaviors of humans throughout history.
Like I said, history is the study of the written past. This involves a lot of what I said earlier about researching, analyzing, and interpreting. Probably my favorite thing about history is that it is always changing. We are discovering new things about the past all the time. No matter how much we try, we will never ever know the full scope of history, because we are never going to have each individual’s thoughts, opinions, or perspectives on things they witnessed. I will leave that particular subject here though, because otherwise I will never stop talking about it.
Obviously, history and anthropology tend to go hand in hand, because they tend to affect what we know about the other subject. Historical documents can provide insight to the behaviors of people two hundred years ago, and archaeology, for example, gives physical evidence of places, people, or events that we only have written records of.
The thing about the humanities, as a whole, is that they tend to build off of each other. Cultural anth and sociology, for example, often go hand in hand. I just wrote two different research papers for two different majors based off of the same topic of Jewish diaspora during the 1930s.
Like I said before, if you keep going back to the humanities find an area you are interested in and just keep taking classes. If you are interested enough, you can get pretty deep in the rabbit hole and find something that you are passionate enough to make a career out of.

4 14 29 31 45 52 69 for sweet vic
4: if they could learn one spell that isn’t available to them at present, which spell would it be? I’m limiting it to cantrips bc A: that is legit something I have thought about thanks to Feats and B: he currently has Zero magic, baby steps but even then it’s...very tough to pick between the usefulness and the nostalgia. On one hand, Vic learning Spare the Dying would be extremely poetic and fitting, and he’d love to be able to help someone long enough for the real healers to get there. On the other......Dancing Lights was Illy’s most frequently used spell, enough so that Vic still has the verbal component memorized. It’s very utility and it’s very familiar to him and it would be. nice.
(The rest under the cut!)
14: what is something they love about themself? He feels like he is someone people trust easily. Whether as like, watching their backs in a fight or as confidant or just a helping hand wherever he can. He is Reliable. He also does genuinely love the echo abilities. Feels they’ve been well-earned and they just. Feel like a piece of home.
29: who would they save? who would they be saved by? aaahaha is “everyone” an appropriate answer for the first bit, because Vic would like it to be everyone. Specifically, though, his friends, without question. Even more specifically, Nol, without hesitation. (and i know, i know because dnd is evil like that, there will come a day when somehow he has to prioritize who to look after and it will Hurt Me) for the second bit....tbh I think it’s gonna be a tossup of whether Nev or Anthe breaks through his very stubborn defenses first. But once all that inevitably comes crashing down it’s just going to be the party as a whole. Having people around this time who won’t let him bottle everything back up again, people who look after him when he won’t look after himself.
31: they’re given a blank piece of paper–what do they do with it? Might start some sort of stream-of-conscious journaling type writing. and then definitely, methodically, ripping it into very tiny pieces.
45: how do they hug people? With every bit of that 18str babey He is realizing how long he went without like. Real affection (not even two years, really, but that is a long time considering how frequent it was before) and the fact that he has people who will hug him now is just. Very Good. Vic puts a lot into hugs, because he has definitely learned to make that sort of thing count. (Hey fun fact, before that hug with Anthe during KirGate? The last genuine affectionate contact he’d had was uh. Illy. Shortly before. u kno.)
52: from whom do they seek validation? once again, does Everyone count? I mean like. Not everyone I guess, he really couldn’t care less what people like Thelyss think of him (other than in a “is he going to try to arrest me” sort of way). But also Vic was a young soldier selected for a very rare and kind of literally iconic skill training. The echo knights are kept as much a secret as they can be from the Empire, but they’re somewhat revered among the Aurora Watch and he wanted to live up to that so badly. He wants to be good at his work, and maybe that work has changed a little now, but. He still wants to prove (to someone, to everyone, to himself) that he can do his job.
69: how would they describe their party members? what an excellent question, a somewhat incredulous laugh would probably be the first thing, but
Anthe - Absolute little spitfire. She’s small (though he’s met smaller) and has somehow condensed a frankly scary amount of whoopass into that tiny frame, and he loves it. Also surprisingly...insightful once you get past that. Always watching people, always picking up on things, always asking things, which can be. Fun when directed at him. But Anthe gets it, and she’s always ready with healing or a safe night’s sleep or weird conversations with skeletons.
Nev - Somehow simultaneously the softest and toughest person he’s ever met. She’s absolutely terrifying in combat (which is great for them, not so great for the demons) and so kind and considerate and thoughtful any other time. Nev is the type to just. Check up on people. Offer a listening ear. Offer advice you didn’t even know you needed. Maybe unfamiliar with the specifics of new places but never really comes across as naive? (also doing all this literally blind, which he so often forgets)
Nol - that’s his wizard, folks. His wizard is a bitch and he likes her so much. She is also extremely complicated, has a frankly fucked up history when you get down to it, but the important part is that she is here, now, and seems to be actively trying. Nol is on their side and holy shit is that a good thing for them because she is terrifying. Absolutely terrifying and fascinating magic involved all the time. He would not call her Nice, not in any sense of the word, she is in fact an asshole to most people most of the time, but beyond that is just. She is Nol and nothing is going to happen to her.
P.A.T. - Very....very confusing. Vic didn’t pursue higher education but he’s pretty sure most professors aren’t like this. It’s interesting, someone who was literally created to do one specific job, but it’s also something he feels is beyond his ability to really understand. PAT has some handy moves when it comes to boosting or protecting the others in a fight, and that’s appreciated. PAT also has a very intrusive very creepy little dog that Vic does not trust with personal matters at all.
Raelian - Fast as shit. Like come on, she is faster than he is, she is taking his status as the humanoid blender. There is not bitterness there, really, he legitimately wants to see her fight more, and there’s some martial class solidarity there. There’s also the weird...ghost arms? Which are cool and also very weird. Raelian is someone he’s still working at figuring out, but it is probably a good thing to have someone else who’s into all the book research shit, especially if they need to break that spell.
(and the MIA kids, in shorter bits)
Ziggy - There are Very Complicated feelings around here. A genuine very good friend, and also a friend who just up and left with just a note to explain it. Jhe - She was...confusing. Bizarre. But also weirdly charming. And whatever she was, she did not deserve whatever it was that happened.

[11.03.20] ✧ 98 days of productivity
ft. decorations around my bed
I hope everyone is having a wonderful week -- and washing their hands with all of this coronavirus stuff gong on. Yesterday UCSB moved all of their classes to remote instruction, so I don’t have to go to campus! Bittersweet though -- I’m leaving on Saturday.
Yesterday I sat at the beach with this girl for like, 4 hours, just hanging out, and it was really wholesome. I truly can’t process that this is my life and I’m leaving this place.
I know I don’t really post much about my romantic life on tumblr because I know literally anyone and everyone can read my page, but let’s just say it’s been a roller coaster. Haven’t spoken to my toxic ex in a while (which, for everyone who knows me, is a big deal), but it’s weird trying to rewind back to the feeling before you met the person you planned to spend the rest of your life with.
I know people talk about “making friends” and “falling in love” when you go to school, but no one really talks about the many of ways they impact your academics (esp in studyblr spheres). I never in my life imagined I would miss an entire day of classes or an entire night of sleep out of pure sickness from a toxic relationship.
I just feel like there’s just a general miscommunication between me and the people in my life currently. Things just feel like they’re shifting and changing and I don’t know what to expect.
My mom and I packed the majority of the stuff from my apartment. It felt good.
I also have been frantically trying to write a paper that I did not realize was due today, but luckily my professor is super understanding of the fact that I’m moving out and that coronavirus is complicating things. Hopefully I can get it done and ready for editing asap.
For my ANTH 130 presentation we had to present a policy brief and we got the top presentation! It was a great feeling to see how well we worked together to make it successful, which is definitely an anomaly in an American institutional setting.
To-dos: ✧ Thesis editing / fix methods + add photos ✧ SOC190A paper + video ✧ ARTHI 5B and ANTH 130 group papers
Tracker:
 ✧ Mood: still conflicted, but euphoric ✧ Energy: 20% ✧ Sleep: 6h
 ✧ Water: 7 glasses
✧ Listening to: lose myself by lolo zouaï ✧ Skincare: getting so much better!! I’m convinced its the water at my old apartment!!
✧ What made me happy today: my momma ✧ What made me proud today: Still working on my assignments when it feels like classes our cancelled and it’s the end of the world
Wish me luck on these papers! xx

I am going to see Durkheim and Star Trek in my nightmares tonight.
Anyways! I'm currently trying to hyper-focus on studying for my ANTH/SOCI midterm because I believe I am not going to get the credit for this mandatory class! Positive thinking though! So I am going to get the credit! Because I am smart! I am capable! And I am only a minor idiot!
I did not work on GIS but I did attend all of my classes so whos the real winner here?
I wasn't expecting the time change to be so obvious but when I left class this afternoon it was literally pitch black outside, at least it stopped raining while I was in class because I forgot my umbrella that morning
Anyways short diary today because I am very tired and sick and want to go to bed now.
Night Night

I gotta keep showing up to Anth for those sweet sweet bonus points but I already turned in my four papers for the semester so I don't really need to take notes. So now I come, participate in the first 20 minutes of discussion, and then do homework on my tablet for the rest of the class.
