I still haven't been able to imagine a satisfying way for my version of Toothcup's first meeting in the reverse httyd au... simply because I believe that what happened in canon could somehow not have happened any other way??

Hiccup is never an active threat to a dragon from close up lol. He wouldn't be angrily charging at Toothless like Astrid or something which might provoke the Night Fury into blindsided aggression.

No, Hiccup would book it into the other direction, perhaps causing Toothless to follow and to pin him down, but never to fire a blast or directly harm him in any other way. Hiccup is too scrawny and afraid to warrant that, and Toothless and him are both too curious about each other for Toothless to go into a blind frenzy over him. Also, to Toothless, Hiccup is simply a rat that perhaps intentionally bit the bola mechanism which took him down, but then also gnawed through the nets. Even Toothless knows that Hiccup's success in taking him down was sheer luck and that it won't happen again.

Regarding an accident, I believe Toothless as a Night Fury is simply too agile, too precise and too cautious with his movements to accidentally hurt Hiccup in a drastic measure...? I mean, the guy can voluntarily retract his teeth and does so even while not fully trusting Hiccup yet. He strikes me as a cat that knows exactly how to pick up someone by their scruff without hurting them. Even a wild Toothless wouldn't bite at someone like Hiccup without caring for the force he uses. He's too much in control of his actions for that.

What I need is for Toothless to become so agitated that he doesn't care that it's Hiccup anymore, and with Hiccup being... well, Hiccup, that is just not possible. Toothless doesn't have any random pre-movie triggers either that Hiccup might have tapped into. The only thing we ever get to know about Toothless' past - and way, way later - is his feud with the skrill. Doesn't apply here.

The only solution I see for the moment is to introduce another human or dragon as a third character onscene who causes confusion, but that feels wrong too. The meeting in the woods is about the two of them. There needn't be someone else.

So yeah, I'm still chewing on this. How the heck does Hiccup get injured and it's indirectly Toothless' fault, but not so the dragon would immediately realize what he's done. Cuz neither Hiccup nor Toothless notice Toothless' missing tailfin in the og movie either. I want Toothless to take off, thinking he properly scared the brat off, only to return later to a battered and broken young boy. Still don't know how to go about that haha. Ideas welcome, I guess?

I've been listening to How to Break a Dragon's Heart

Wow, I forgot how good the Trison (tree prison) scenes are. These are peak. And I do not say this lightly because I love Riddles in the Dark from the Hobbit, but it is better than Riddles in the Dark.

Hiccup is trapped in the dark with this creepy old lady who wants to kill him and she can see him. She is super intelligent. She wants a spoon so badly she would heal his dragon for him, and she is so eager it seems like she might do a sloppy job but in the end he sews him right up and he's all better.

There is a battle of wits, and meanwhile, she tells one of the most amazing, creepy story, and Hiccup realizes with a sinking feeling she knows exactly who she is.

Hiccup gets a lore drop of his ancestors, and it's relevant with Chinhilda and the Ghost of the Bay of the Broken Heart! Also, I guess the reason Valhallarama didn't know she had the King's Lost things is according to our unreliable narrarator, the second best Sword and the Jewel were the only well-known ones and only she knew the rest. (Obviously Wodensfang did too.) Maybe some others did too but... I wonder how well Alvin knew the King's Lost Things? If he knew he would have taken Toothless right away so possibly he's been out of contact with Exellinor for so long he's just forgotten what they are.

A key that Toothless swallowed four books ago is the way out.

It's hard for the rest of the book to come close to those scenes, those were just too good but I know there's more good ones ahead.

Also, I like the detail that Hiccup know's Cami carries around a bag of winkles for her dragon. There is a whole Chekov's armory in these books, but not everything needs to be onscene. He knows a special detail about his friend because he is living outside of just the books we read about him, and he's taken the time to know his friends better than we do.

And because he is foolish enough to think the witch died in there, Hiccup forgets to lock the door after all that experience!

It was a pretty satisfying moment when Alvin found him all locked up in chains that he just released him from.

Tales From Dispatch, Pt. 53

ME: Dispatch, this is Fran. OFC MANN: Hey, I came across an accident out here on Thoroughfare and Drivetime. I've got some license plates for you, nobody's injured, the inside lanes of both directions are shut down, both cars are gonna need wreckers, and we'll need the fire department out here to clean up a spill. ME: Pfft. Do you want a case number too? This is basically all you need for the whole accident. MANN: Don't you dare. I am off-duty and I refuse to take on more paperwork. ME: No problems, we'll run you out a patrol and get everything going. MANN: Thanks! *the call is entered, a patrol officer is sent, and the information is logged into the call over the course of a few minutes* ME: Okay, I'm gonna start pulling wreckers for the accident. COWORKER: (assigned to the primary police radio today) I think we should hold off on doing that. ME: We...should? COWORKER: We want to be sure we've got the right vehicles in the call. ME: But Mann gave me the license plates? COWORKER: I think we should wait for patrol to get there and confirm. ME: (thinking) I could argue with this. It's going to be more work later. And take longer. And I think maybe the PD radio operator today is somehow not connecting that just because MANN usually works at a school, that doesn't make him not a police officer just as capable of doing patrol things like reading off a license plate. And I have seniority, so I outrank him if push comes to shove. ME: (thinking) On the other hand, there's no reason to be that confrontational. This is gonna be a pain, but it isn't dangerous. And COWORKER is still new and didn't I always want people to let me do my job so I could learn how when I was new? Wasn't it frustrating when they didn't? And he was assigned to the PD primary channel today. It's his assigned job to make this call, and I shouldn't try to do his job even if I think he's making a (ultimately pretty minor) mistake. ME: (out loud) All right. I will hold off pulling wreckers. *some time passes* OFC ONSCENE: Wait, do we not have wreckers coming already? ME: (thinking) Oh, I forgot. Letting him make the call on this was not only the right decision for logical reasons, but also for entertainment ones.

I know this is bad, but I started to laugh when rapunzel had gotten captured by gothel. It's because the last scene with them showed her standing up to gothel and her last words to her were that she would never let her use her hair again. Only for gothel to gag and chain her the next time those two are onscene.

It just reminded me of those 2010s movies where the girlfriend character shows the villain how tough she is, only for her to get caught by the villain later on and be saved by her boyfriend. Lol, so much for being strong and independent princess.

like. hmmm. it just. these kids showed up to go to school and then the HPSC expanded the work-study program because they needed the numbers and then those kids ended up on the front lines and then the hpsc erased the ones who got gravely injured because of that from the record? hmmmmmmm!

Harris County deputies fatally shoot man with knife trespassing at clinic in north Houston

Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies shot and killed a man late Monday after authorities said he was trespassing at a Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in north Houston. 

A deputy responded around 11 p.m. to reports of a suspicious male in a vehicle at the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic parking lot near 15655 Cypresswood Medical Drive, Asst. Chief John Nanny told Onscene TV reporters. Nanny said the man, whose name wasn't released, had been sleeping in his car and refused to leave when clinic security staff asked him to. 

A deputy attempted to get the man to exit the vehicle, but he refused to roll down his window or leave the car, Nanny said.

While waiting for additional deputies to arrive, the deputy tried to remove the man by breaking a car window, Nanny said. Deputies were eventually able to get the car door open and attempted to taser the man, Nanny said. The man continued to ignore orders, so deputies physically removed him from the car, Nanny said. 

When deputies pulled him from the car, the man was holding a large butcher knife, so two officers shot him, Nanny said. He was pronounced dead on the scene and no deputy injuries were reported. 

One of the deputies who discharged his gun is 29 years old and a 7-and-a-half-year veteran of the sheriff's office, Nanny said. The other deputy who shot the man is 25 years old and has 6-and-a-half years of experience with the department, he said. The deputies' names weren't immediately released. 

The shooting is under investigation by the Harris County District Attorney's Office and the sheriff's office's Internal Affairs Division, Nanny said. Body-worn camera footage will be released in the next 45 days, he said.
