Is any TMNT fan going to stick around?

I'm doing a bunch of little Rise fics, including that first one based on that dream I had where 2018 Mikey gets amnesia and psionics from a skull fracture. And the fic based on that other dream I had where 2018 met 2003 and 2003 Leo tried to adopt 2018 Mikey and 2018 Raph freaked out at 2003 Raph for his attitude. I kind of want to wait for more episodes to air before I start publishing on AO3. But there are some folks waiting, including very very patient beta readers.

I'm already on WordPress, Discord, Dreamwidth (aka The Better LiveJournal), and Mastodon, and I plan on joining Pillowfort soon. But I don't plan on leaving Tumblr until it gets as truly insufferable as LiveJournal got. So if you're going to be here or and on those other platforms, let me know because I loved the readership I got through this hellsite.

I'm going to read all my unfinished fics from the perspective of Future Me, aka me right now, who doesn't quite remember writing that but hey good job past me wow that's insightful holy shit did I write that? I'm amazing!

February 2022:

Rant: My Mikey is in my head

*sniffle* I just want Mikey to be treated right, okay? I just want to see his serious badass side in multiple episodes, without his brothers scolding him, without Donnie yelling at him, without Raph slapping him, without Leo sighing in disappointment. I’m sad that Mikey isn’t allowed to take after his Mirage self, creative artistic sensitive natural raw energetic intuitive clever witty funny without being foolish, the actual heart and light who would adopt every cat in the world, who is sharply smart and emotionally intellectual and observes the world through a lens of pure compassion and longing, who doesn’t completely act like a stupid child, who acts like a bouncy ADHD young teenager who wants to be loved, who already knows the big words and sees the world like a playground but knows damn well he’s not the only great player. Nick Mikey is the playful teenager who acts like a teenager, but he’s meant to be better than a Beast Boy clone from Teen Titans Go being constantly mocked for apparent lack of intelligence, slip-ups with words, lack of awareness, ignorance apparently born of innocence, childlike wonder at the whole universe. Every time I see Mikey doing anything in the show, I tense up and prepare myself for Donnie to snap at him. For a villain to laugh at him. For the whole family to call him an idiot. It happened with 4Kids Mike in the 2003 show, past Season 3, except for most of Grudge Match and bits of episodes that could have been put together as their own episode centering on Mikey being badass. 4Kids Mikey had a weirdly strong ego, and he was too annoying, and he was full of himself, and the part of me inventing headcanon wanted to hide. The scenes where he was mocked made me cringe and there were too many. The Michelangelo I prefer is essentially the one in my head. The one mashed and merged between Mirage, Archie, movies, and Nick with a dash of early 4Kids because the animation was amazing. I blame David Wise for this, for headlining the 1987 Dick Wolf cartoon, for changing Mikey’s entire character. I liked the skateboarder, that was it, I told David all this. He said he preferred the stupid surfer dude Mikey, and I had no retort, it was the end of the 1990s anyway. David at least kept Mikey’s empathic clairsentient intuition, his supernatural athleticism, his ability to create imaginative jokes, stories, and quips on the spot. And wow, so many people on Tumblr love Donnie. It fascinates me. I guess he is the entire package. I wonder what would have happened had Mikey wound up Donnie’s assistant medic, the creative artist next to the logical engineer. They could be the ultimate team, if Don would stop grimacing at Mike’s silliness.

*FLAIL* SOMEBODY MAKE ME WRITE THIS THING ALREADY

Oh right, the dream! I was so busy being happy about Rise that I didn’t have room to talk about the dream.

Note: This is my brain, and most of you know my brain on TMNT headcanon by now, so guess what we’re doing ANGST AND MIKEY.

So, the boys are fighting a bunch of the mutant silverfish, making great use of their mystic weapons. Mikey is chasing some and they attack him and he heavily crashes into a brick wall and is knocked out. Cue Raph scooping him up and just sobbing his giant heart out and yelling at Donnie “Donnie you gotta help him! Fix him, his head’s broken!” while Leo is murdering all the remaining silverfish and then babbling about medical issues, and Donnie is grinding his teeth and finally blows up and yells about not being a doctor and that Splinter would know what to do and they should be call April to come help. Cut to Mikey lying unconscious on a bed in Donnie’s lab with actually a skull fracture. Raph is still kind of holding him and wibbling, with his lower lip trembling. Leo is running around in the background yelling the names of all the potential complications that come with head trauma. April yells at him “Well if you wanna be a nurse get your baby blue butt over here and help Donnie do these scans!” and Leo shouts “Chronic miiiigraaaine - OKAY!” and hurls himself at them like a determined warrior anime character. Cut to apparently a week later and Mikey is still in bed and reading a bunch of Don’s textbooks. Raph brings him pancakes and bacon and feeds him because Mikey’s hands are too shaky. Raph says “So how much of all these did ya absorb and how much did ya read from Donnie in his mind?” and Mikey says “Oh he doesn’t want me to read him again until he gets better control because I accidentally saw stuff he thinks is embarrassing but it’s really not, he’s adorable but don’t tell him I said that.” and in the distance Donnie yells “I am gently menacing, thank you very much! I’m adorably villainous!” and Leo snarks, “The day you become a villain I will kick your butt so hard you’ll wish - um, Donnie put that down no no no do not smash that over my shell I love my shell, stop that, Raaaph heelp, Donnie snapped again!” and Raph says “I gotta go take care of that, Lil Bro, finish your breakfast and then we can play video games, you remember how ta do that right?” And Mikey gets this thoughtful frown on his face and pauses, and then he perks up and grins, “Nope, but will you gimme permission to read it from you?” and Raph gets this tearful look and says “Sure, Mikey, anything ya want!” and as he turns around he stuffs his fist in his mouth and does this little choked cry and quickly runs out of the room.

Then I woke up. And that’s my very first dream about Rise Of The TMNT.

FEBRUARY 2021:

Awwww, how unprepared we all were for TMNT 2012 Season 5.

(No wonder they took away Mikey's Electrokinetic power away so quickly.)

I miss how truly chaotic the Mirage Tales issues could get. 2012 outdid some of them, but admittedly Kevin was involved, and Kevin loved chaos so much he created a Klunk just to mutate her and then play her voice. Kevin loving chaos is why IDW is so mind-blowing so often - and what drove the core of both the Michelangelo Macro and the 2020 issue in which Mikey eventually becomes leader. If only 2012 and its writers stuck with small character plot developments onscreen, we wouldn't have to write so many Fix It and AU fics. Just kidding, we would do it away.
