classified love - wanda maximoff x kryptonian!reader
Tumblr media
summary: wanda is new to the avengers, and learns the concept of a secret identity. or the one where kryptonian!reader has a secret, and a crush.
warnings: reader is superwoman; mild angst; mutual pining; nervous flirting; soft wanda; protective reader; fluff with feelings; light humor; superhero bureaucracy; canon divergence; minor ultron reference; mild language; happy ending.
a/n-> i'm going for my old drafts and this is from months ago when i was reading a bunch of supercorp fics, especially ones about lena learning about kara's secret identity. So i made my own with this two lovely dorkies. (nope, this is not related to the series with kryptonian!reader i'm working on).

It wasn’t that Wanda didn’t know what a secret identity was.
Of course she did. She just hadn’t quite grasped the weight of it.
In her defense, the Avengers weren’t exactly the poster children for discretion.
Tony Stark made sure everyone knew he was Iron Man. Steve Rogers had been the star-spangled face of American propaganda since the forties. Natasha was arguably the most famous spy on Earth - and somehow still mysterious - and poor Bruce had his green alter ego splashed across news channels since his very first rampage. And then there was Thor. A literal god. No mask could hide that hair.
So maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t completely her fault when she leaned over during breakfast, bright-eyed and curious, and casually asked you,
“So… what’s your name, by the way?”
The room fell dead silent.
Wanda blinked, eyes flicking around the Avengers compound’s cozy living room. The sun spilled lazily through the tall windows, warming the hardwood floors and catching dust in the air. A pot of coffee burbled in the kitchenette, and the smell of waffles hung pleasantly in the background. But the atmosphere shifted like someone had cut the power.
Tony was the first to crack. He snorted into his mug, trying and failing to smother a laugh.
Wanda’s eyes widened further when Natasha silently reached over and handed him a crumpled five-dollar bill.
Your smile dropped. Just seconds ago, you’d been grinning at her, saying how nice it was to finally have someone around your age on the team. Now your expression shuttered. Calm, professional. Guarded.
“Uh… that’s confidential,” you said simply.
Wanda let out a short laugh, confused. She tilted her head, hoping she’d misheard.
“What?”
Your eyes flicked over to the group still half-watching from the couches. Clint was biting back a grin. Steve looked conveniently invested in stirring his coffee. You exhaled through your nose.
“I guess nobody warned you about the secret identity policy,” you muttered, not bothering to hide your disappointment. Your arms crossed over your chest - biceps straining slightly under the fabric of your suit - and Wanda was momentarily distracted by just how much muscle you were hiding beneath the armor. She didn’t think that was allowed.
“I’m not trying to be rude,” you added, your voice softer. “But I can’t tell you my real name.”
Her brows drew together. “But you know mine.”
From the couch, Natasha barked out a laugh. You shot her a look that was half glare, half plea, before turning your attention back to Wanda, a flicker less certain than before.
“I do,” you admitted. “But that’s because… everything about you is already public knowledge.” Your voice lowered a little, like you were offering her something real. “It’s nothing personal. It’s about safety. The only reason Ultron didn’t find my family was because I wasn’t in any of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s databases. Not the Avengers’, either. Same way they kept Barton’s family off the radar.”
That explanation landed - she could feel the weight of it - but it didn’t soothe her. Not really.
Wanda forced a tight smile, but a bitter coil twisted in her stomach.
Of course, it still came back to Ultron.
She hadn’t fought beside you back then - hadn’t fought against you either - but that didn’t mean the past was erased. That didn’t mean trust grew overnight. Clearly, it hadn’t.
And suddenly, she was the one on the defensive. Because why should you get to know her when she was still in the dark about you?
“I don’t think that’s very fair,” she said, echoing your posture with a huff and crossing her arms. “You get to know everyone’s names, but we don’t get to know yours?”
You blinked, surprised by the shift in her tone. But it only lasted a beat.
Clearing your throat, you held your ground. “They know. You’re the only one who doesn’t.”
The offense hit her like a slap. She turned sharply toward the others, sending each of them a scandalized glare. They all conveniently found something fascinating to look at - the wall, the floor, the coffee machine.
Only Natasha had the nerve to smile into her cup.
“Hey, I don’t know either!” Sam piped up from the back, his voice light, trying to cut through the tension like sunlight through fog.
You cracked a small smile at that, grateful. But Wanda didn’t move.
Her arms stayed stubbornly crossed, a pout tugging at her lips, and whatever iron-clad resolve you’d been clinging to softened immediately.
“Hey, if it’s any consolation - for both of you,” you start again, your voice lighter, trying to reset the energy to what it had been before your name became the hot topic of the morning. “It’s only because I’ve known them longer. Maybe… if we hang out a little more, I’ll tell you.”
You flash Wanda a tentative smile. There’s warmth behind it - an invitation, not a promise - but she doesn’t take the bait.
She presses her lips together, visibly fighting the tug of a grin, but loses the battle to her pride. With a sharp turn of her head, she mutters, “Don’t bother,” and spins on her heel.
You watch her walk away, ponytail swaying with each step, her back impossibly straight and her jaw clenched in defiance.
And just like that, you’re certain - painfully certain - she might be the most charming girl you’ve ever met.
Unfortunately for you, Natasha doesn’t miss a beat.
She catches the way your gaze lingers a moment too long, your head tilted just slightly as Wanda disappears down the hall. The corner of the assassin’s mouth curls with amusement as she leans back into the couch, arms crossed.
You snap out of it fast, frowning in her direction. “Don’t think I didn’t notice you paying Stark when Wanda brought that up,” you accuse, tone laced with mock betrayal. “You two were betting on this again?”
Tony lets out a bark of laughter from his seat and shrugs like it’s the most natural thing in the world. Natasha raises both eyebrows, feigning innocence. The five-dollar bill is already gone, stashed away like evidence in a classified file.
You sigh, rubbing your hand over your face. “Unbelievable.”
“Oh, come on,” Natasha says, barely hiding her amusement. “You’ve gotta admit - it’s hilarious when people realize Superwoman isn’t your actual name.”
Steve chuckles from the other couch, finally giving in. “That reminds me - remember that poor waiter in D.C.? The one who panicked and couldn’t decide whether to call you Miss Super or Madam Alien?”
Laughter ripples through the room at the memory. Even Banner cracks a smile. You roll your eyes dramatically, throwing your hands up.
“I told him just ‘Ma’am’ was fine,” you mutter as you start walking toward the door, shaking your head. “And for the record,” you call out, tossing a glance over your shoulder with a perfectly straight face, “I am from another planet.”
Tony doesn’t miss a beat. “See? Knew it.”
The room erupts into fresh laughter, but you just shake your head, waving a hand dismissively as you walk off.
“Still unbelievable,” you mutter under your breath, though this time, there’s amusement in your tone. The kind that sits warm and quiet in your chest, like sunlight through clouds.

A new bet had been circulating through the Avengers Compound ever since your disastrously awkward introduction to the team’s newest recruits.
How long until Wanda Maximoff discovers your true identity?
Clint said a few weeks, tops. Steve and Tony were betting for a couple of months. Thor, bless him, didn’t even understand the concept of keeping a secret identity and nearly shouted your actual name across the room - only to be stopped by a flying metal gauntlet Tony launched with frightening precision.
Bruce, ever the scientist, made a whole prediction chart - color-coded and everything - outlining the likelihood of various exposure scenarios. According to his behavioral analysis, you’d eventually slip up and reveal yourself accidentally. Tony called him a spoilsport but still convinced him to place a bet anyway.
Maria and Natasha, meanwhile, were curled together on the couch like shadows stitched at the hip, indistinguishable in the half-light of movie night. Natasha didn’t even look up from the screen as she muttered, “It’s not fair to bet on that. Wanda could just read her mind.”
Maria hummed her agreement. “And not tell anyone. Classic Maximoff move.”
Right on cue, as if summoned by sheer chaos, Wanda reappeared in the doorway, arms crossed, eyebrows drawn tight in a frown.
“I would never invade someone’s mind like that,” she snapped, voice low and tight with restrained indignation. “If she wants to keep secrets and build walls, that’s her choice.”
Then she turned on her heel and walked off, her crimson flannel pajama pants fluttering slightly with the motion. The room sat in silence for a beat, then Natasha grinned.
“New bet,” she announced. “How long until Wanda admits she has a crush on Y/N?”
Laughter erupted.
It only got more ridiculous from there.
Maintaining a secret identity was hard enough with your crazy schedule, missions popping up at ungodly hours, and an internship at Oscorp that demanded more from you than legally acceptable. Peter Parker was the only one who truly understood the madness. You had a little ongoing competition: “How many times did I almost get caught today?” A point system. The winner got free shawarma.
But lately, things felt… off.
It was as if the team had collectively decided to test you. You were being sent on last-minute missions, brought back in civilian clothes, tossed into briefings before you had time to shed your disguise. It felt deliberate. Sabotage by friendly fire.
Of course, no one mentioned the bet to you.
It was one of those mornings - chaotic, cursed, and running ten steps behind the clock. You were still in your Oscorp clothes, your signature lead-laced glasses perched on your nose, hair slightly frizzy from rushing. Your dress shirt wasn’t completely buttoned, and beneath it, a glimpse of the familiar blue and red peeked through like a bad omen.
As you stumbled barefoot into the Tower’s common room, scanning for your shoes, you froze.
Wanda Maximoff was standing there in oversized pajamas, her hair a sleepy mess, blinking at you from over a mug of steaming coffee.
“Oh, uh. Hi,” you said, voice cracking just a bit under the panic.
This was it. This was the moment you’d have to change your name, disappear to the Arctic, and start a new life herding goats.
Wanda just blinked, forced a smile, and murmured a polite “Good morning” before turning back to the coffee machine, like you were no one. Like you were just some intern passing through.
Your shoes sat mockingly on the far side of the room. You crossed to them, fumbling with your shirt to make sure not a single thread of the Superwoman suit was visible.
You sat down, tugging your laces tight, when her voice broke the quiet.
“Are you… Friends with anyone here?” she asked suddenly. Wanda leaned casually against the counter, but there was something soft in her voice, almost cautious.
Your mind blanked. Friends? With anyone?
“Uh yeah,” you blurted, nerves turning your brain into static. “I’m friends with Superwoman.”
You could hear your soul leave your body.
Wanda tilted her head. “Oh?”
Before she could press further-or laugh, or question the absurdity of what you just said, the automatic door whooshed open.
Bruce stepped in with a file in his hands and a furrow on his brow.
He took one look at you, then glanced at Wanda. You weren’t often in civilian clothes around the Tower - especially not so early, or without warning. His pause was subtle, but it said enough.
“Y/N?” Bruce asked, tone neutral but probing. “Didn’t know you were here.”
You jumped to your feet, trying to act casual. “Hey, yeah. I came by late last night. Needed to grab some documents.”
Bruce blinked slowly.
“I, uh, ended up staying. Superwoman said it was okay,” you added, your lie falling apart as it left your mouth.
Bruce, mercifully, decided not to comment. The brilliance in his eyes suggested he knew exactly what you were doing. He gave a slow nod. “Right. Of course.”
You grabbed your shoes, already half out the door. “Nice meeting you, Miss Maximoff,” you said quickly, voice almost too formal as you escaped, waving once and not daring to look back.
Bruce stood there for a moment in silence, then looked at Wanda.
She simply lifted the cereal box into the air with her magic, poured it with too much force into her bowl, and carried it off, pouting the whole way.
-
The worst part of the whole secret identity thing isn't the exhaustion, or the constant lies, or even the juggling act between superhero landings and corporate deadlines.
It’s remembering exactly why it's necessary.
Peter runs into an old friend - Harry Osborn - who, by some cosmic joke, also happens to be your boss. Superheroes have their own demons, their own secrets clawing behind the masks, and something serious unfolds between them.
When the dust settles, Gwen ends up in the hospital.
She’ll recover - Peter says it like a prayer - but the guilt is carved into the spaces under his eyes, and it doesn’t go away when he tells you what happened. About Harry, about the favors he wanted from Spider-Man. About how betrayed he felt when he discovered Peter was Spider-Man - and had refused to help.
You don’t sleep that night.
There's a pit in your stomach, bitter and deep. That could’ve been anyone. That could’ve been you.
There are only a handful of people who know who you really are. Your family. Carol - your lifeline, your salvation, the one who pulled you from the wreckage of your dying world. Fury - who raised you through SHIELD like some grim guardian angel. A few Avengers who found out under specific, inescapable circumstances.
Peter, of course. He understands the weight of the mask.
And then… there’s everyone else.
Your classmates. Your bosses at Oscorp. The coffee shop barista who always forgets your name. The world.
And Wanda.
Wanda, who bickered with Superwoman during missions like it were a sport. Who never let you win without a challenge and rolled her eyes so dramatically you sometimes thought she'd levitate off the ground.
Wanda, who always looked at Y/N Danvers like she was made of something softer. Who shared food without asking. Who nudged your knee during movie nights. Who once touched your badge, just to straighten it, and sent a shiver up your spine with the brush of her fingers against your neck.
Wanda, who was slowly becoming a reason to smile in rooms too quiet.
And precisely because of that… Wanda, who could never know.
You couldn’t stand the idea of putting her in danger.
Not just from enemies, but from you. From what it costs to be close to you.
By the time your distress becomes impossible to hide, the bet has long been forgotten. You walk through the Tower in pieces. The team stops whispering about when you'll slip up and starts worrying about whether you’re okay.
It’s Natasha who finally had enough.
She kicks you off the next mission.
No arguments. No chance to protest. Just a firm grip on your wrist and a silent march through the hallways until you're sitting in an empty room that smells faintly of metal and ozone. The door closes with a hiss behind you.
“Okay,” she says, arms crossed. “Let’s talk.”
You glance at the wall like it might give you an escape route. It doesn’t.
You can hear faint voices down the hallway. The others are whispering about your little outburst in the briefing room. You clench your jaw.
“There’s nothing to talk about,” you mutter.
Nat raises an eyebrow.
“Nothing,” you repeat. You shrug. Look at the floor. Your voice dips quieter. “It’s just…”
A breath escapes you. Heavy. Frustrated.
“…how did you know this was what you wanted?”
Natasha’s expression shifts. The sharpness in her posture softens. She sets her tablet down on the table behind her, unread.
“What do you mean?” she asks, but her voice is gentle now.
You hesitate. Your throat burns.
“I mean… back then. When you stopped being the Black Widow. When Fury gave you the option to just be Natasha Romanoff. Why didn’t you take it? Why didn’t you stop?”
She doesn’t answer at first. She just watches you, eyes trained and careful. You hate that they see too much.
You blink, and the tears well up despite yourself. You’re so tired. Of pretending. Of juggling two lives. Of wonder, which one is real?
“And now you’re living with Maria,” you continue, voice cracking. “You could’ve quit. You could be… happy. Quiet. Safe.”
Natasha sighs.
“I get it,” she says softly, like a truth you didn’t want to hear.
She sits beside you.
“But this isn’t really about me, is it?”
You shake your head, eyes shining with unshed tears. Natasha reaches out instinctively, finding your hand and resting hers over it. It's warm. Solid. A grounding force you didn’t realize you needed.
“I visited Gwen in the hospital before I came here,” you say quietly, your voice thick with guilt and fury. “Harry… he did a number on her. Four broken ribs. Internal bleeding. She’s lucky to be alive.”
Your breath shudders. “Peter hasn’t put the mask on in weeks. And I can’t stop thinking - if any of my enemies came for the people I care about…”
You don’t finish the sentence. You don’t need to.
Natasha squeezes your hand tighter. “Hey. I get the fear. I really do. But we’re not helpless. You’re not alone. We can defend ourselves.”
You let out a dry, humorless laugh and nod, though there’s nothing funny in any of this.
“I didn’t want any of this to be necessary, Nat,” you murmur. “The mask, the secrets. I didn’t come here to be a superhero.”
“I know,” she says gently. “But no one makes it through this life alone, Y/N.” She laces her fingers with yours. “And, if you must know, the weight got a little easier for me when I let Maria in. Turns out, sharing the burden isn’t so bad. Who knew?”
You huff a soft laugh and bump your shoulder lightly against hers. The touch feels safe. Reassuring.
There’s a brief silence before you speak again. “I’ll get my head on straight, okay? You don’t have to bench me.”
Nat smiles at you with that knowing tilt of her head. “Look, I think you’re one of the best heroes we’ve got. But maybe - just maybe - getting benched is a good thing right now. Take a breath. A day off. Ask a girl out.”
Your face heats immediately, and you mutter something about not having time for relationships.
Nat smirks, entirely unsurprised. “Then maybe you should consider someone who gets the job. Say, another superhero?” She wiggles her brows. “Someone in the Tower who, as far as I can tell, is very interested.”
You blink. “Wanda doesn’t even know I’m Superwoman.”
Natasha bursts out laughing.
“Oh, honey. Do you really think the mind reader of the group doesn’t know?”
You stare at her, stunned. “But - she never said anything! She treats me like I’m two different people!”
Nat sighs, her smirk softening into something more understanding. “Because you asked her to. Maybe not with words, but with walls. You put this distance between yourself and everyone. Between her and you.”
You look down, guilt landing like a weight on your chest.
“She’s the new kid, Y/N,” Natasha continues gently. “She’s trying to make real connections. Trying to earn trust. And you - ” she nudges your knee with hers - “you won’t let her in all the way.”
You swallow hard, throat tight.
“I just thought… maybe she didn’t know. Or maybe she liked Y/N Danvers more than Superwoman.”
Natasha throws her head back and laughs again, full and exasperated. “Wow. You really are the queen of self-denial.”
She stands and grabs her work tablet off the table, mumbling to herself as she taps through a few screens. “Well, since neither of you is cleared for the mission, it looks like you and Wanda are stuck with tower duty. Desk work, all day.”
You grimace. “Ugh, but I hate desk work - ” You stop. Catch the flicker of amusement in her eyes. Oh. Desk work.
Alone. With Wanda. In an empty tower.
“This desk work,” you mumble.
“I love desk work, actually,” you add quickly, sitting up straighter.
Natasha rolls her eyes and chuckles, already halfway to the door. “You just cost me twenty bucks, Danvers.”
It takes a second to process what she means. Another bet. Another chance. Another push.
And before the door closes behind her, you're on your feet again - chasing after her, heart hammering with something that feels a lot like hope.
-
Desk work is, without a doubt, the least glamorous part of being a superhero.
Bureaucracy. Mission reports. Intelligence logs. Inventory updates. Categorizing classified items into neatly labeled folders.
Endless, soul-crushingly boring stuff.
Boring enough that your focus slips every five minutes - though maybe that’s less about the files and more about the hum of Kryptonian energy beneath your skin, begging for movement. Or maybe it’s the presence at the other desk, steadily flipping through files, her brow furrowed in concentration.
You spin absently in your swivel chair, just to keep your body busy. One turn too far and the chair wobbles dangerously under your weight, threatening to tip. You gasp and grab the desk for balance - just in time.
Wanda lets out a small giggle, quick and unexpected. The sound makes your heart stutter.
“Sorry you got dragged into this too,” she says, trying to make conversation. Her eyes flick toward you, soft with something you can’t quite name. “I think this is just them getting back at me.”
You tilt your head, brows raised. “What do you mean?” Your voice is playful, but your mind leaps straight to the worst possible interpretation. “Wait - am I that bad to be around? Is this some kind of punishment?”
Wanda's eyes widen, and she scoffs, scandalized. “What? No! That’s not what I meant.” She sounds almost flustered, and when you give her your best wide-eyed puppy dog look, she glares, flustered but amused. “Come on, you’re not that bad.”
There’s laughter in her tone, and you offer a reluctant smile, looking away before it turns into a grin you can’t hide.
She leans back slightly in her chair, her voice softer now. “It’s because of Ultron, really. My fault he managed to compromise so many of our files. Now we have to go all analog. Hard copies for everything. Hence…” She gestures broadly to the pile of folders between you.
You pause, your smile fading a little. “You know you didn’t create Ultron, right?”
Wanda doesn’t answer immediately. Her fingers hover over the edge of a file. You can hear the shift in her breath, just slightly unsteady, before it evens again.
“Maybe it’s time to stop blaming yourself for something that wasn’t yours to carry,” you add gently.
There’s a moment of quiet between you, something unspoken passing in the space between your desks. A heartbeat. Hers, steady now. Yours, skipping like it’s forgotten how to keep rhythm.
Then Wanda clears her throat. “Still,” she says lightly, “I have to admit - it’s a little funny. Seeing Superwoman stuck behind a desk.”
You roll your eyes, shifting in your seat as the poor chair creaks under your weight. She smirks. “It’s like watching Thor try to sit on Tony’s designer couch. That poor thing never stood a chance.”
You laugh under your breath and adjust your posture before the chair gives out. “It’s not so bad,” you murmur, casting her a sideways glance. “I like my work partner.”
The words slip out before you can stop them. They land in the air between you with more weight than you intended.
Wanda blinks, and her cheeks flush instantly. You feel the heat creep up your own neck in response.
“I mean - like, in a friendly way,” you stammer quickly, eyes darting back to your file. “Like… liking my teammate. Not like liking liking - ”
She lets out a breathy laugh, somewhere between nervous and charmed, and turns her attention to the stack of papers in front of her like they’ve suddenly become the most fascinating thing in the world.
You try to listen - listen for the gentle rhythm of her heartbeat - but yours is pounding so loudly in your ears, you can’t hear anything else.
“I get it, Y/N,” Wanda murmurs.
And just like that, your mouth clamps shut. Embarrassment floods through you, hot and fast. You duck your head and pretend to care very deeply about the stack of inventory files in front of you, wishing you could disappear into them. Or, better yet, have one of those heavy boxes topple over and end this moment with poetic finality.
It takes a full five minutes for your brain to catch up - five minutes of sitting there in silence, pretending to work, heart pounding uselessly - before it hits you.
She called you by name.
Your eyes widen as realization crashes into you like a wave. You freeze, blinking at the words on the page that don’t even register anymore. Your breathing shifts, shallow and uneven.
Wanda brought it up first.
You didn’t even notice.
You’ve been so locked inside your own anxious spiral, so distracted by every small move she makes, that you missed the one thing you were most afraid of.
You’re so wrapped up in your panic that you don’t realize she’s stopped working, that she’s crossed the room, quiet as a shadow. She pulls something out of one of the drawers. It doesn’t belong to the inventory.
Your glasses.
The old pair, lost ages ago in the mess of the tower, now held gently in her hands like they were something precious.
You only catch her movement in your peripheral vision, and when she’s standing beside you, you instinctively hold your breath.
The chair shifts slightly beneath you, the telltale shimmer of her magic moving it to face her.
She doesn’t say anything. But there’s no anger in her face. No judgment. Just that patient, quiet look that always makes you feel like maybe the world isn’t such a bad place after all.
She brushes a few strands of hair from your eyes. Then, slowly, she slips the glasses onto your face.
“There you are,” she says softly.
It’s almost enough to undo you.
The contrast of the suit - the bright blue and red - and the old glasses feels ridiculous, but the way Wanda’s eyes soften makes it something else entirely. Familiar. Real. You.
“Wanda, I - ” you start, but she moves before you can finish.
She kisses you.
It’s soft, gentle - just the press of her lips to yours. Barely long enough to register before she pulls away.
Your cheeks go up in flames. “H-hm...” Your brain short-circuits. Words evaporate. You’re just... sitting there, in a slightly too-small chair, in your super-suit, with the most incredible girl in the world looking at you like that.
Wanda’s lips quirk in a smile. “Sorry. I just thought we had to get a few things out of the way.” Her fingers trace lightly down your cheek. “You’ve been thinking about it for days. But it didn’t seem like you were going to actually do anything.”
“I was going to,” you mumble, flustered. “Eventually.”
She laughs under her breath, warm and amused. “Sure. Eventually.”
Before you can think of a clever response, she leans in again - this time slower, more certain. Her nose brushes yours, a soft, teasing touch, before her lips find yours again.
This kiss is different. Unhurried. Confident. Her mouth moves against yours with quiet intent, and when her tongue brushes against yours, it sends a shiver down your spine.
Unfortunately, the chair makes a rather unfortunate groan beneath your shifting weight. You lurch slightly, catching yourself before you topple over completely.
Wanda pulls back with a burst of laughter, and you can’t help but join her, even as you cover your face in embarrassment.
Eventually, you peel the glasses from your nose and set them on the desk beside you. Your hands find hers and bring them to your chest, pressing them gently against the symbol on your uniform. Her gaze flickers down, then back to your face.
Your voice comes quieter now, almost fragile. “I’m sorry it took me so long to tell the truth,” you say. “I’ve never been this scared to let someone in. To risk putting them in danger just by loving them.”
Wanda doesn’t flinch. She nods, her expression softening as she wraps her arms around your shoulders.
“I do understand,” she whispers. “Come here.”
You fold into the embrace, arms slipping around her waist, grounding yourself in the feel of her - warm, solid, real. There’s a long moment where neither of you says anything. You just breathe each other in.
Then, voice low and almost conspiratorial, Wanda murmurs against your ear: “I love Mexican food, if you ever get brave enough to ask me out.”
You laugh into her shoulder, breaking the hug. “Oh my God, stop reading my mind.”
“But it’s so fun,” she teases, her smirk blooming again.
You roll your eyes, but the grin stays. “I can think of something better for you to focus on.”
She raises an eyebrow, intrigued.
But she’s the one leaning in first, closing the distance with a wicked little smile and a kiss that promises a thousand unsaid things.

The one where Dick is secretly Kryptonian and Zod is the only one who recognizes him
I want a fic set in the yj cartoon universe but I want to absolutely fuck with the timeline, as one does. I want Zod to show up way earlier, like just after the end of season 2. I want my usual set up where Dick is actually only like 15-17ish bc I think the younger he is the angst-ier it gets and I love that for him. Love making him suffer. I want Artemis to have refused to come back as Tigress to help Kaldur, so Dick ends up spending the entirety of season 2 with a million responsibilities: he has to sub in as Batman at least a couple times a week in Gotham and whenever the JL needs him so the world doesn’t get suspicious, he has to run the Team as Nightwing, he has to patrol as Nightwing, he has to train Tim to be Robin bc he’s only been Robin for a couple months before Bruce fucked off to Rimbor, he acted as Kaldur’s handler while he’s undercover, and then he convinces Deathstroke to let him be Renegade so he can provide Kaldur with some sort of backup. Oh and also he’s still in high school. Taking extra credits so he can graduate sooner.
And while all of this is happening, he’s also actively hiding the fact that he’s Kryptonian. That he’s actually Superman’s older brother. That he was stuck in the Phantom Zone for years because he was scared to leave his parents and go in the pod, so the explosion set his pod off course. That he was terrified when he landed on Earth and found out that Kal and Kara grew up without him. That he was the only one with the prototype bracelet his father had made to prevent the radiation from the yellow sun giving Dick powers.
So after the invasion, after everything calms down, the heroes around him start questioning his need to keep the undercover op a secret. They question is ability as a leader, as a hero. And Dick, who’s exhausted and overwhelmed and just so so tired, basically gives them all the middle finger and fucks off the Blüdhaven. Screw them all. He doesn’t need them. He doesn’t need anyone. He’s lost two families already, he can lose his makeshift third. Kara’s never even been in the same room as him since Dick has been on Earth. It’s fine. Everything’s fine. He’s totally fine.
Then General Zod shows up four months later, and the JL reluctantly calls in nightwing because they need all the help they can get. And Dick helps. Because he’s good like that. Because even though he barely remembers Zod, he does remember that he was an ass and he didn’t like him, no matter how respectful his parents always told him he should be to his elders, especially one with the rank of General. But that was before Zod got thrown in the Phantom Zone, so Dick likes to think it wouldn’t count now.
Dick is on the Watchtower, lingering in the back, waiting for the debrief to start so he can just go home already. He’s missed a shift at the bar he works at for this. He’s probably going to get fired.
While Dick is brooding to himself, Superman and Supergirl arrive, each holding an arm of the shackled Zod, who’s looking around the room like they’re all dirt beneath his boots. But when Dick looks up, he and Zod look at each other. Even with the mask, Dick can tell he’s been recognized. And it makes his stomach drop.
Because Zod starts laughing, and it makes everyone pause. Everyone is watching him, and it only makes Zod’s smirk widen.
“I haven’t seen you in quite some time,” Zod says, his voice smooth. “Given your youth, it must’ve been you we heard crying in the Phantom Zone all those years. Remind me of your name again, boy?”
Dick stays frozen, even as everyone turns to him after realizing he’s the one Zod is staring down. The further Dick tries to hunch in on himself, the more Zod laughs.
“What was it? Ree-El? Rae-El? Rid-El?”
“Rah-El,” Dick eventually hisses, glaring at Zod. Zod just continues smirking at him, and Dick help but bite at him in Kryptonian, “Traitor.”
Kara is gasping, her hold on Zod going slack, but Kal-El just looks confused. As does everyone else around them.
“Ah, yes,” Zod says, his voice smooth. “Rah-El, firstborn of Jor-El and Lara. I’d thought you’d perished on Krypton when I hadn’t seen you fighting with your family. But look at you, hiding in the shadows. Tell me, it was you we heard in the Phantom Zone, wasn’t it? Your screams were so delightful.”
And just knowing that Zod and the others heard him while he was terrified, alone, locked in the pod with no way out, it makes his blood boil. Because they could have helped him. They should have helped him. He was a child, he was one of their own, and they left him to rot.
“Nightwing,” Kal’s voice is shaking, “what is he talking about?”
“Nightwing?” Zod laughs. “Oh, you really have been hiding in plain sight, haven’t you? Very clever.”
Dick can feel his hands shaking and his breathing get shallower, so he pushes himself off the wall and stomps up to Zod, hissing at him, “I hope they send you to rot in the Phantom Zone for the rest of eternity, you pathetic excuse for a general.”
He leaves before anyone can say anything. He doesn’t know how to answer any of their questions anyway. He doesn’t want to.

I'm so glad you like it! Honestly, I'm pretty jealous as well. Though, I don't doubt he has the white noise generator and uses it on more than just those trips. Could you imagine Bruce and the other Bats going to the Supers, Clark, Kon, Kara, and Jon (who if I remember correctly has the best ears out of all of them) and when asked to track him down by sound, all of them are just like, "Red Robin? Oh no we can't do that." and when asked why, Clark gets nervous and says, "well. None of us have ever been able to hear his heart beat. We don't know what tech or magic he uses but *none* of us have ever been able to hear his heart. Not since he was 15. I asked you one time why I couldn't hear him and you just hummed at me!"
Meanwhile panic is rising in not just the hero community, but also the villain one. Red Robin has a *lot* of connections and if someone took or heaven forbid killed him? The Gothem Rouges remember what happened when the second Robin died, they know how bad Batman got. Now the Robin who saved them from him is gone? And now Nightwing and Red Hood and Spoiler and all the rest are on a Hunt, getting more violent like Batman did? Oh no, they are all going into hiding until this blows over.
Then there's also the villains connected to members of Young Justice. The Flash's Rouges Gallery hears that one of the Mini Speedsters is in a grief spiral and could end up seriously hurting them because one of his best friends has gone missing and is presumed dead? Fuck No. They are keeping their noses clean until it's done. So are the people who tend to antagonize Metropolis because Kon is *not* holding back. He grabbed Matallo and used his TTK to make him fall into thousands of pieces and then just stared down at him with a cold look of anger before leaving. Dr Light when to the ER when he tried to mess with the Teen Titans while both Dick and Damian were still on call and Tim was missing.
On day four of Tim being missing, Damian's head suddenly snaps up and he says, "I need to check a tracker." and the rest of the Bats follow him to the bat computer. When asked what he is doing, Damian admits, "a few years ago when I still hated Timothy, I put a tracker inside of his favorite camera, which he just so happened to bring with him on his trip. It may still be there and if he has his camera-" a few moments later, there is a ping on the screen showing the tracker is o the move, currently crossing the boarder from Kentucky into West Virginia. Tim has no idea what hell is coming for him, mostly because he figured that the Bats knew he did this every other month to unwind and relax. Traveling on a train for 4 to 6 days is his version of a vacation.
Glad for the add on. However, I think the angst reason for Tim "not having a heartbeat" would be because Kon died.
After Kon died, Tim created the machine to make sure no one else could hear his heartbeat (especially because Kon wasn't around for that anymore). When Kon came back, it was still a rough time for Tim. He was practically a feral and distrustful raccoon. Since he's still working on trusting people again, his heartbeat is still hidden (plus Kon hasn't brought it up, so Tim kind of forgot).
The stuff about the rogues is so true! That's why a few fanworks call Tim the "heart" of the batfam. I think all members play important roles and will similarly be missed. The heart comment is a cute nod to his role as a bridge and leash (he helped B obtain a larger support group and prevented him from killing people).
I like that this has Damian being the one to find out. Though Tim is grateful there's was a way for his family to find him while they were freaked out (he thought they knew about it), he's also exasperated at the tracker's existence. He probably pulls a prank on Damian for it.
Also, Tim 100% brings this incident back up with Bruce whenever the man complains about Tim's habit of overworking. He looks his father in the eyes and says, "The last time I took a vacation, you freaked out and mobilized the entire hero community to find me." They both know that's not what happened, but Tim is also not wrong.

Asynchronous (Rift era, pre-Crisis, not nearly as much sc angst as the gif implies)
Where am I?, Kara thought, her body shaking as she pushed herself off the floor she had apparently crashed into, trying to stand. How long was I unconscious?
Her head was killing her. Pain was a rarity under a yellow sun, and in this case the feeling was hard to shake - it was just all too reminiscent of not long ago, when she was trapped in kryptonite, fighting burning lungs and a blinding headache while fighting heartbreak at the same time.
But she needed to not think about Lena right now.
Kara searched her mind for the last thing she remembered, Brainy’s words transmitted to her ears, telling her about the capabilities of the alien creature she was fighting. The creature was generally docile enough - but in a panic, it would thrash and quake, and it had the unique ability to…
Where… When am I?, Kara thought, looking around at the building whose ceiling she had fallen into. The creature could send her anywhere in time and space - forward or back in time, across the planet or galaxy, it didn’t matter. The good news is that the effect would be temporary in nature, lasting a day at most, before she snapped back into place, something about attenuated vibrations. “Time is like a rubber band,” Brainy had said, though Kara was certain she could hear pain in his attempt to simplify the explanation.
Kara heard the buzz of a portal behind her, the quick cock of a gun. “Don’t move,” came the familiar voice. “These aren’t ordinary bullets.”
Kara turned slowly, deflating under the hard eyes of her ex-best-friend. Lena was tense and angry, her finger resting on the trigger, her other hand on a tracking device. My heat signature, Kara thought, Guess she has kryptonite bullets now.
Lena’s eyes narrowed as she reached to her belt, before tossing vibrant green cuffs in Kara’s direction. “Put those on.”
Kara lowered herself to the floor, taking the cuffs, feeling the burn in her hands. She couldn’t really fathom Lena trying to kill her. But after the disruption of Lena’s Myriad plan, and now being held at gunpoint… “Lena, what are - what are you going to do?”
“How do you know my name?” Lena growled.
Kara’s eyes widened. Anywhere in time and space… “Who do you think I am?” Kara asked.
“Is that a joke?” Lena asked, as Kara’s mind revved into overdrive. “You think you can come back, with cartoonish S on your chest, and we’ll forget the Third Reich?”
Fear sank into Kara’s stomach. Earth X. “Lena, I know this looks like-”
“Through the portal. Now.”
-----------
Kara found herself sitting in an interrogation room.
Her mind was scrambling for what Barry had said had become of Earth X - she remembered that, in the aftermath, the Third Reich had fallen to the Resistance, which was trying to rebuild a non-fascist society. But she knew the balance had to be fragile. The Reich had its proponents.
But Kara didn’t have long to think, before another familiar face walked into the room. “Winn!” Kara said, jumping up.
“Sit down,” Winn growled back.
Kara tensed, shaking off her confusion as she slowly sank to her chair, as Winn gave Lena a skeptical look. Right, he’s not the Winn I know either…
Lena shrugged. “She knew my name, too.”
“You’re both my friends,” Kara said softly, “On my Earth.”
Winn ignored her words, stepping around the table to take a seat at its corner. “We need to know if the Führer is still alive.”
“He’s dead,” Kara said, meeting Winn’s eyes. “As is his wife.”
Winn’s eyes narrowed in suspicion.
“I was sent here by accident,” Kara answered. “At some point in the next day or so, I’ll snap back to my own Earth.” If you don’t kill me first, she thought.
“And how do I know you’re from another Earth?” Winn demanded.
“You met my sister,” Kara whispered, thinking back to Alex’s stories when they were separated on Earth X, years ago. “Alex Danvers. On my Earth, she’s your friend too.”
“You,” Winn said skeptically. “I’m friends with you.”
“I’m not from your Earth,” Kara said. “I’m not asking you to trust me. Just let me live long enough to go back to my own time.”
-----------
Kara fidgeted as she sat alone in the room again - watching, waiting, itching against the bounds of her kryptonite cuffs.
She was certain that Winn and Lena - possibly others - were debating what to do with her. Hopefully they don't just kill me, Kara thought, searching her mind for how she might prove she’s not from their Earth.
But the door opened again.
Lena stepped in quietly, eyes on Kara. But the anger was subdued from before. She was curious. “Lena,” Kara whispered.
The wariness wasn’t gone from Lena’s stance, but she sat across from Kara. “What’s it like, on your Earth?”
Kara smiled. My Lena would be curious about the other Earths too, she thought. “The Third Reich ended in 1945. We’re… far from a perfect world. But we haven’t had the struggle that you’ve had.”
“And you and I are friends?”
Kara’s expression faltered, as she glanced down at her hands. “We used to be. We used to be best friends.”
“What happened?”
Kara bit at her lip, unable to look Lena in the eye. “I betrayed you. You hate me now.”
Lena’s brows furrowed. “That doesn’t seem to be the sort of thing that would help your cause.”
“I’m not going to lie to you again,” Kara said. “I’ve done too much of that. The other you, I mean.”
Lena frowned, and Kara could see some of the tension in her body rise again. “What happened to my Earth’s Kara? How did she die?”
“Her heart was dying from too much solar exposure,” Kara said. “I took her up into the atmosphere before her body… it started a nuclear reaction.”
“And the Führer?”
“Oliver from another Earth killed him.”
Lena’s eyebrows briefly raised. “Winn met him, apparently.”
“Yeah. My sister was there too.”
-----------
Kara itched at her bonds again, wishing there was a clock she could check. I don’t know how much time would be left anyway, she thought to herself. But at least I’d know…
She was surprised to hear the door open again. Lena walked through with a cup and some bread, placing both in front of Kara on the table. “You must be hungry,” she said.
“Thank you,” Kara murmured, leaning forward and beginning to eat.
“What did you lie to me about?” Lena asked. “On your Earth?”
Kara swallowed harshly. “I- I kept my kryptonian identity from you. Kryptonians and Luthors don’t get along.”
“Luthors?”
Kara’s brow crinkled. “Are you a Walsh, here?”
Lena nodded slowly.
“Your mother…” Kara asked. “She’s alive?”
Lena’s eyes narrowed. “Yes.”
Kara smiled. She got to be raised by Elizabeth, she thought. “Are the Luthors alive? On this Earth?”
“No,” Lena said. “Alexander Luthor was the last Führer, before Oliver Queen. There was a power struggle.”
Kara nodded. “You were raised by the Luthors. On my Earth. So when I hid my identity, and became friends with you… you didn’t take it well when you found out.”
Lena looked on curiously. “The secret? Drove me to hate you?”
Kara shook her head. “There were other mistakes I made. In the aftermath. I… hurt you pretty badly.”
“So what did I do next?”
“You tried to brainwash the world.”
Lena’s eyes widened. “Why?”
“To make everyone kind.”
Lena’s brow raised. I guess that resonates, Kara thought. In a world full of fascists…
“I can see the appeal,” Lena said.
-----------
Kara was fascinated. And bored.
Her only company was Lena, on and off. She was grateful when Lena came in with food, and over the moon when Lena came in to exchange Kara’s kryptonite cuffs with far less painful power cuffs.
But her moments with Lena were few and far between given her apparent other responsibilities, leaving Kara staring up at the ceiling for long stretches of time.
She found herself torn, thoughts of “When will I be able to go home?” warring with “I hope my Lena looks at me like that again someday.”
-----------
“Are you happy here?” Kara asked. “Are you- are you with anyone?” Lena smiled. “I met him a year ago,” she said. “We butted heads on technical projects. Trying to rebuild our society’s infrastructure. But something more came of it.”
Kara smiled. “Jack?”
Lena’s eyes widened, and she nodded. “Jack.”
Kara nodded too. “I’m glad you have someone.”
Lena tilted her head curiously. “Were we more than friends?”
“You and Jack? Yeah, on my Earth-”
“No,” Lena clarified. “You and I. What were we to each other?”
Oh. “No,” Kara said, shifting uncomfortably. “We were only ever friends.”
“Is that all you wanted?”
“I just- don’t think it’s relevant to you-”
“I don’t know what I’m like on your Earth,” Lena said, leaning forward on her arms. “But if someone hurt me so badly that I try to brainwash the world about it, I think that person must’ve meant something to me.”
Kara bit her lip.
Lena’s brow quirked. “If your plan is to never lie to me again, that seems like the sort of thing you should tell me. Other me.”
Kara laughed, her heart twinging with joy and pain. “If we ever get along again, I’ll tell you.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
-----------
“Why are you trusting me?” Kara asked curiously.
“What do you mean?” Lena asked, in a tone that was more coy than confused.
“You just seem less suspicious of me than before,” Kara shrugged. “In the beginning.”
Lena’s lips quirked, taking a moment to consider Kara. She then raised her hand, twisting it slightly, causing a small yellow glow to appear. Kara noted in shock that there seemed to be a glow passing over her own body, too. “What’s happen- what are you doing?”
“Just making your temporal shift visible,” Lena said. “I scanned you after our first meeting. I can’t prove you’re not from this Earth, but I can prove that you’re not where the universe expects you to be right now.”
“I’m sorry, but-” Kara sputtered. “But are you using magic?”
“Lena doesn’t have magic on your Earth?” Lena said.
“I can’t even get my Lena to believe in magic,” Kara said with a laugh. “Rao, this is amazing.”
Kara glanced up, and found Lena smiling.
-----------
“How long have I been here?” Kara asked.
“About 12 hours,” Lena said. “Honestly, I’d let you go. But Winn said it might cause a panic anyway, if too many people see you walking around.”
Kara sat back for a moment. “Yeah, that makes sense.”
-----------
It was at the 17 hour mark - just after Lena had brought in more food - that Kara’s hands began to glow. “What are you doing now?” Kara asked.
“Nothing,” Lena said, leaning forward to eye the glow. “I think you’re being pulled back.”
“Oh,” Kara said, glancing up at the alternate Lena. What should I say? “Thank you,” Kara murmured. “Thanks for being good company.”
“Give me time,” Lena said gently.
“Time?”
“I’ll come to my senses,” Lena said, thinking to herself, nodding. “I- I know there’s baggage. But at some point, I will come to my senses. I’ll come back to you.”
Kara smiled. “I hope so.”
“Good luck, Kara Zor-El.”
-----------
Kara found herself falling. No longer cuffed, no longer in a dark dusty room - but bathed in sunlight and breathing fresh air. Earth-38, she thought gratefully.
She blinked, shooting upwards in the sky again, hearing shouting in her ear. “Kara?” came Brainy’s panicked voice. “Kara, are you still there?”
“I’m here,” Kara gasped, looking over National City.
“Must’ve lost you for a minute,” Brainy said. “The creature is by the arboretum. We’ve finished making the power net, J’onn is flying it over.”
Kara glanced to the north, but her ears were fixating somewhere southeast, locating a familiar heartbeat. We’ll figure it out, Kara thought, clinging to Earth X Lena’s words.
We’ll get there, in the end. “I’m on my way.”

If you had to rank all the justice league fams ( superfam, batfam, martianfam, etc ) from least favorite to most favorite, how would you do it ?
Ooh I'm not familiar with all the cape-fams that well so I don't know how much of a proper ranking I can do, so here's just a random vibes tier list:
Tumblr media
Martianfam: In canon (i guess this consists of just J'onn and M'gann, Jem if we're reaching), they're a mess. I'll save this for the 2nd part of the upcoming Ma'al essay, but Martianfam's biggest problem is having undefined relationships that don't take advantage of a proper family dynamic. Canonically F tier. However,,,I'm obsessed with my version of Martianfam so that bias puts Martianfam in theoretical S tier.
Tumblr media
Superfam: So much potential in this fam to be generational immigrant/diaspora angst and tension only for canon to be so uncreative with the legacy characters (minus Kong Kenan). This fam suffers from overreliance on clones and alternate universe versions of existing characters tied to Clark's Kryptonian genes (the adopted twins, Kong, and the Steels are a good change of pace). Jon and Conner (and sometimes even Kara) are suffering being, what I like to call, a "Clark Kent factory product". They're too scared to make these boys different from dad. Conner Superboy is in limbo with Jon taking over. What is going on with Powergirl being infantilized now. However,,, if the immigrant allegory was critically applied to Superfam? Theoretical S tier. Canonically C tier.
Tumblr media
Batfam: Undoubtedly the strongest of the cape-fams in DC. Even with their flaws and how they've been modernized, this is still the blueprint. What's there cultivates an intense fanbase and there's such a diversity in the backgrounds of each Batfam member and how they evolved. Each member has a unique relationship with Bruce, many characters are capable of sustaining their own solos, they have relationships with each other, gosh it's a lot. I'm affectionately putting this in A tier, shaving some points off for stuff like erasing Babs' disability, characters like Steph but especially Duke being sidelined, the girls being infantilized as the boys get to grow into men, whitewashing Damian, etc.
Tumblr media
Wonderfam: I can only speak based on vibes here, but gosh you deserve so much better, Wonderfam. I feel like each member should deeply explore a new facet of womanhood different from Diana to freshen up each time a new legacy character joins the Wonderfam (Nubia's great at this from what I've seen). I love that this fam includes Themyscirans and sometimes ordinary girls (even if that gets retconned a bunch). I eyeroll from a distance whenever it's really obvious that the male-dominated writers of DC try adding men into Wonderfam as a means of focusing attention away from women (cough Diana's bro). But also. Kick Trinity out of Wonderfam. I have never seen a character so universally behated but I get it. Unfortunately D tier. I want better for this fam though.
Tumblr media
GL fam: Really good! They're a unique fam in that being a part of the GL corp means being a part of the fam, so you get people from all sorts of backgrounds that don't have to be related to a main character. Theoretically this can even extend to other lantern colors whenever the GLs team up with baddies like Razer or Sinestro. You can arrange different groups or pairs of GLs to form their own Star-Trek esque team. And that's such a fun time when that happens. I'm not in GL fandom enough to know the nuances of some narrative flaws or anything, so I'm giving the GL fam a vibes based S tier. They just work! And they're unique while doing it.
Tumblr media
Flashfam: I can only speak based on vibes here but whatever's going on with Flash fam just looks like such a fun time. From what I've seen and read, so many of the characters are funny and endearing. I love that there are many twins in this fam. That's just a bias for me. My biggest nitpick with Flashfam is that it suffers from over-convoluted origin stories. That's kind of a problem baked into the dough when your powers intersect with time travel, but it adds a layer of inaccessibility when some of the character's backstories are so convoluted. Vibes based B tier.
Tumblr media
Aquafam: Mostly vibes based impression again since I don't really go here but I've met the characters a good amount of times. Arthur has a special theoretical space in my heart as someone borne of two cultures. We're here for that mixed diaspora struggle. I enjoy the rivalry he has with his brother, I think Mera has a lot of potential as a love interest and wifeguy (and she has an evil twin so, bonus in my book), and aquababy. Hah. I enjoy the many ways Aqualad has been reinterpreted across media. However! Kaldur/Jackson is definitely the most interesting addition to the family, imo! I'm all for villains or villain-adjacent characters being on Team Hero. I also like Black Manta. Petty baddie we respect. Uuh vibes based B tier. I'll theoretically bump this up to S tier if all Aquafam members walked out of the ocean to the H20 "Just Add Water" theme song.
Tumblr media
Arrowfam: I'm embarrassingly unknowledgeable with Arrowfam members so we're doing vibes. On vibes they're like Batfam adjacent but sound way more interesting. Oliver Queen is a great messy character, and I like seeing each member have a different complex relationship to him. I'm very endeared to Roy/Arsenal/Speedy, his villain will-they-won't-they romance and baby dad plot is inherently interesting. I also love Connor Hawke!! Blasian ace king fr. And I adore Black Canary. She has so much going on and still checks in on this fam too. Idk if it's controversial of me, but A tier based on vibes.
Tumblr media
Constantinefam: SIKE this loser doesn't have friends or family they're all dead. S tier. If DC is pushing DC!Johnstantine into a family or partnership dynamic with JL Dark, Zatanna, or Xanthe Zhou? Theoretical F tier.
Haha this was fun to write, thank you for the fun ask! Nice to ramble about the various fams of the DC world.

Top five comic book writers and/or artists you would like to shake warmly by the hand for the good work they do
OOH good one!!! let's see.
judd winick. mostly for terry berg's storyline in gl1990 but also just in general for his work in bringing queer characters and plots into comics without just using them as shock or angst fodder (looking at you, ron marz.)
tom grummett. he understands how to draw kids/teens looking like kids and teens and aughghhhh his kon-els are everything to me!!! also his work in robin '93 :)
jon lewis, speaking of robin '93. his issues were absolutely my favorite of the whole run. he leaned harder into supernatural weirdness than a lot of other writers on robin '93 but it was SO fun to me, and also more importantly, his character work was really solid and a lot more enjoyable to read than, say, dixon and his godawful attempts at writing girls.
louise simonson! steel '94 is one of my favorite runs, and i enjoyed her work in a lot of other triangle era superman stories, too. honestly, most of the triangle era superman team would be on this list, but just going "all the supey guys :)" feels like a cop-out. (also, jeph loeb is in there, and though he's written some of my favorite superman issues i would NEVER shake his hand because of the atrocities he committed against kara.)
karl kesel. shocking, i know, given how many criticisms of the man's writing i have, but he did also write a lot of superman issues i have heartily enjoyed, plus he created my favorite character, and i do love sb94 for all its many flaws. also, unlike nearly every damn superboy writer after him, he knows the definition of the word "clone", which is apparently a VERY high bar not only for the fandom but also for dc itself as an organization.
honorable mention to bilquis evely for beautiful beautiful art :)

Do you have any Superbat fic recs? Just kind of stumbled on the ship and am already excited by the notion.
Tumblr media
Hiiiii sweetheart! Welcome to the bright and sunny side of superbat shipping ~ *blows dust off my laptop that I haven’t turned on in a month* oh gross, there are actual spiderwebs on it... I'm so sorry, Maggie. Ahem, first of all. Any and all fics by these talented people: @frownyalfred, @superbatdisasterblog, @susiecarter, @sassyresacon1990 (I know I'm forgetting a lot of people but it's been a while okay)
This is just handful of my ultimate favs, if you need more I'm always more than happy to go through my bookmarks!
tell all the truth (but tell it slant) by susiecarter (rated M)
It takes a while for Batman and Superman to work things out, once Clark comes back from the dead. Pretending to date each other in order to explain why Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent are in the same place so often? Doesn't help as much as you might think.
Condersing Conditions by LeCadavre_1904 (rated E)
Before Bruce and Clark fall into bed for the first time, Bruce has an unusual condition.
Clark is as obliging as always.
don't push me (cause I am close to the edge) by LinguisticJubilee (rated G)
Kara huffs out a breath in frustration. “Every Kryptonian has a heartsong. And they’re beautiful, but when you listen to one on its own it feels like something is missing. It’s like...they have something like this too, right?” She gestures outward impatiently, and Bruce forces himself not to flinch at her casual use of they. “Only they have words written down instead.”
“Soulmates,” Clark says, his voice strained.
The word hits Bruce like a bullet through the lung. He keeps his face perfectly relaxed, his heartbeat calm and regular, as he realizes (too late, he's always too late) that he should have expected this all along.
fallin' for him was like fallin' from grace by Resacon1990 (rated T)
“But Bruce isn’t gay?” Clark points out, and there’s an awkward moment of everyone clearing their throats and avoiding Clark’s eyes until he turns to stare at Bruce. “Are you?”
Bruce blinks for a moment before offering a sheepish smile. “I’m not… not?” he offers, and Clark feels his brain just about short-circuit at the news.
Or, five times Clark finds himself falling for Bruce, and the one time he does something about it
No Church in the Wild by TheResurrectionist (not rated but OUCH ANGST)
"I'll have a contingency plan."
"If you're the first face he sees, you'll need it."
Bruce brings Clark back by himself.
smokin' in the boys' room - by The Ressurectionist (not rated but both blood and dicks, so rated Misha HAPPY) (I cannot tell you how many times I've reread this one GUUUHHH)
Bruce Wayne -- billionaire playboy, owner of, at most, three brain cells -- beaten up at his own charity gala. Bruce Wayne, CEO of Wayne Enterprises out of nepotism and dumb luck, whose business wasn’t touched by corruption purely because of incompetence -- Bruce Wayne, airheaded and still generous, still kind, bloody in a stall and trying to hide it.
His hand clenched on the stall door, crumpling it between his fingers. His eyes weren’t burning yet, but barely.
“Who did this to you?”
I Would I Might Forget That I Am I by susiecarter (rated T)
Clark Kent woke up, ate breakfast, went to work—the same way he did every day. Ordinary.
Except for the part where Superman hadn't been seen in at least a week and nobody knew why, Lois was acting kind of weird, and Bruce Wayne was insisting that Clark was the only reporter he'd allow to run a feature on the crashed alien ship in the park, since Wayne Enterprises had been granted control of the site. And the way Clark felt every time Wayne looked at him a little too long definitely wasn't helping.
But it was fine. Clark was normal, there was nothing wrong with him, and everything was fine.
Satisfaction Brought It Back by slippin_into_dakrness and SpiritsFlame. (rated G) (This one is my comfort comfort comfort read!!!)
Bruce always thought that Superman's cute shtick of rescuing cats from trees was a bid for publicity—until a confrontation with a magic user leaves him stuck as a cat. He learns how mistaken he was when Superman not only rescues him, but takes him back to a small Metropolis apartment. The opportunity to learn more about the alien can't be ignored, but is Bruce ready for everything he will learn about someone he has only ever regarded with distrust and dislike?

First, pls know I am screaming in delight at you writing think pink all month. It is my birthday month. Best gift.
Second, I got all caught up on "you're a real Katch" (I think I got that tag right?) and I need to ask (though obv you don't need to answer!) but I keep doing the reading version of peeking through my hands every time Match reminds me that Kara and Clark don't KNOW. So I need to know: do they realize? And if/when they do, do they treat Match kindly and accept him despite his deception? I'm a wimp when it comes to angst >_>
Ps. Thank you for the assurance about non-infidelity in the tim/kon xeno fic. I will happily keep following along and waiting for a wild boyfriend to appear.
well that is appropriate and amusing timing, lol.
In regards to Timkon xeno: yeah I just REALLY hate infidelity as, like . . . a thing in general, it just is SO unpleasant/unpalatable to me, so I figured I'd include that assurance to reassure anyone similarly-minded. Like, I might have written some stuff that edges into gray area "situationship unclear", but straight-up cheating on your committed partner in any situation that does not involve either amnesia, an abusive partner, being completely off your rock on sex pollen, or "presumed dead"? Please miss me with that, emotional betrayal on that level is just not a thing I can get into. Tim sober-mindedly cheating on Bernard is just not a thing I personally enjoy. And like, the only person who IS currently sex-pollen-esque compromised in that WIP is Kon, who just has a lot of complicated feelings about reality rewriting itself without him and is trying REAL HARD not to fuck shit up while also not thinking very clearly and having impulse-control issues.
Annnnnd in regards to "you're a real Katch": vague but still spoiler-ish response behind the cut.
Ninety percent of the angst that is/is going to occur in this fic is internal and based off Match having eight hundred billion shitty past experiences that were sometimes trauma-informed responses from a person who did not understand they were enough of a person to be traumatized and were sometimes inadvertently self-inflicted due to maladaptive coping mechanisms and were sometimes just the Agenda being fucking shitty, and the remaining ten percent is entirely accidental triggering of said trauma and not deliberate, like, CRUELTY on anyone else's part or anything. There is not at any point gonna be anyone being deliberately cruel, except MAYBE an upset/freaked-out Match lashing out at some point thanks to those maladaptive coping mechanisms, depending on how it writes.

CW: miscarriage, heavy angst; inspired by the scene from Fleabag
A month ago Kara would never have thought that she’d be counting down the minutes until she could leave a gala Lena was hosting… that she’d have tried to get out of attending the event in the first place.
But that was the thing: she wasn’t attending, she was covering. And, for all her gripes with him, she could admit that Snapper’s refusing to let her handoff the beat she’d been cultivating for literal years was pretty fair.
Of course, his conclusion that being more “detached” from Lena now was an “improvement” had made her want to Kool-Aid Man him through the nearest drywall.
But… it was fine.
She was here. She was doing her job. She just had to get through Lena’s toast, thanking the generous patrons of the Luthor Children’s Hospital and unveiling its new wing dedicated to the treatment of rare congenital conditions.
And then get an exclusive quote for CatCo…
She was so preoccupied running all the scenarios of how that would go — not well, in summary — that she was only just realizing that something was actually wrong.
The guests had corralled over five minutes ago and were starting to get antsy and the lanyard-clad organizers looked harried on the sidelines.
And that was went she heard it. A familiar thrum, an unfamiliar rhythm.
Her heels were all that stopped her from unconsciously speeding into a blur. And she counted it as a win that she didn’t break the door to the women’s room off its hinges. Surely, money could be spared to replace the crushed door stopper and broken wall tiles.
She only just stopped herself from ripping open the stall door. She knew Lena got heavy periods since they used to talk about everything.
Since they used to talk.
And, well, technically Kara hadn’t… needed to be told. Yet another thing Lena had undoubtedly put together by now and resented her for.
The point was Kara could tell — not that she was ever trying to — when it was Lena’s time of the month… and maybe it was, coincidentally. Coincidentally because menstruation did not smell like a crime scene.
Which only left one possibility.
***
Lena had always known her ex-best friend was smart. Truthfully, if she hadn’t been so dedicated to journalism, Lena probably would’ve offered her a job at L-Corp. It would have been a hell of a lot cheaper way for them to work together than what Lena had actually resorted to.
Not that she’d been lying when she’d told Kara she hadn’t bought CatCo as a favor to a friend.
It had been a favor to herself. An act of pure self-indulgence between sticking it to Edge and making Kara happy.
Kara, the once upon time love of her life who was indeed smart. Which was why Lena felt herself deriving perverse amusement from Kara gawking, wide-eyed and uncharacteristically pale, like an 11-year-old boy watching a video in health class.
And then Kara took a step forward, and the reality came crashing down on her.
“Don’t.”
As the threats went, it was far from Lena’s best work. Neither cold and calculating, nor base and bombastic.
“Lena.”
Fortunately, Kara helped her out as only she could. Mortifying as it was, Lena had come to the realization that Kara had always been a trigger for her in a way no one else ever had.
She’d been moved to National City with the dream of working with Supergirl.
She’d rebranded Luthor Corp because Kara had made her reconsidered what she wanted her company stand for.
She’d spent billions of dollars on that fucking tabloid that Kara — unbeknownst to her — wasn’t even working for at the time.
And, of course, she’d shot her brother in the chest because she could live in a world without him but not without her.
Which was still the case. She’d had her chance at Mt. Norquay — that she’d been trying to take it — and the close call had sent her running to heave liter of a coffee.
So, no, Lena did not want Kara dead. But she didn’t want her anywhere near her.
“GET YOUR HANDS. OFF MY MISCARRIAGE.”
Her throat immediately felt scratchy, like she’d been screaming for hours. She supposed rarely speaking at all these days was catching up with her.
So her next words came out a croak. But they made the light extinguish in those blue eyes all the same.
“It’s mine.”
***
After a nine-month sabbatical in Ireland, Lena gave birth at The Tower. They couldn’t exactly entrust a local OB-GYN with the care of a half-Kryptonian newborn.
Not that Alex, or any of them, were an expert either. But, like, Alex had finally started to feel like it all might be okay: Lena resting peacefully and Kara cautiously cradling their baby girl (not having moved any part of her body since Lena had placed Declan in Kara’s arms an hour ago).
“Sam!”
Alex startled at the shout, Kara still in the bedside chair but no longer gazing down adoringly.
Before Alex could ask what was up — and, frankly, why her sister wanted their friend when she was right there — Sam was rushing in, clearly with a similar question of on the tip to her tongue.
“I need you to take her.”
Sam didn’t hesitate, and Kara was immediately on her feet, turning to her. Alex had already assured her sister the team were on standby for any emergencies and was fully prepared to tell her to sit her ass back down.
“She’s bleeding.”
Alex tempered the initial flicker of panic, blazing as it was in the blue eyes looking back at her, before lifting the sheet.
And she then had to bury it in it. Because Kara was wrong.
“Alex!”
Her wife was starting to hemorrhage.
“Kara?”
Lena’s eyes were still closed, but the hand that been resting on her abdomen slid to the edge of the bed, palm up.

Note
My favorite superman angst will always be that he can ALWAYS hear thousands of people in need of help at any given time, but he's had to learn to just sit at a park sometimes, tune them out, and feed some fucking ducks. Eat a sandwhich. Sit with lois and watch a show.
How do you think supergirl handles that same problem as she acclimates to earth?
I think for Supergirl it was also coupled with ~teen angst!~
I mean, in my general interpretation, a lot of the immediate sensory overload of super-senses for Kara is kind of... semi-overridden by the fact that Kara herself is still recovering from Kryptonite exposure from Argo City. Like she's in ROUGH SHAPE when she pops out of the cryo-pod because, it's a cryo-pod! It was meant to hit the pause button on something that was killing her! But Kara's super-hearing is kind of more complex--it's not like she's constantly unconsciously picking up on the suffering, for her, she's a fish out of water, and she isn't fully convinced that this place is a good home for her and Kal. While Superman hears the cries of help and sounds of suffering for a planet he loves, Kara's stuck hearing about people's cruelty and pettiness and inability to accept anything different from them on an alien world--and like, that isn't 100% on purpose, it's more of a confirmation bias thing. For Kara it becomes learning to listen to the good people are capable of, listening for kindness. She's pissed off--she's 15 and edgy, but like Clark, she's deeply lonely, and she has to figure out how actually let the grief flow though her so she can make room in herself for new love, for a new home.
Also if we're going with the Kara Danvers route with her, then usually there's kind of a DEO leash on her to keep her from flying after every cry for help--and she's kind of stuck listening to other heroes step in or hearing that these events are part of a broader and more complex situation. Like I feel like Kara's forced into a more immediately collaborative position than Clark ever was, and like, she's kind of like "That's not fucking fair" but it's also more complicated than that because Clark pretty much grew up with these slowly developing powers and then Kara is in this position of growing up without powers and then being like "Woe. Yellow Sun radiation be upon ye."

tagged by @inkedroplets who tagged me in a few things now, and I forgot to answer some of them. Shame on me, but thanks for the tag, darling:)
1. What sort of content do you create, and what is the thing you’ve made that you’re most proud of?
I started with art, then began writing, then started animating, and recently uploaded a fanvid 😅
I'm proud of them all because they are all part of the progress 😌
2. What fandom(s) do you create for?
Supergirl. I'm counting my Sadie/Saskia vid as supercorp.
3. What is your current favourite ship (or brotp if you prefer), and how controversial is it?
Supercorp. And apparently a lot of people don't like them because they hated supergirl? (At least according to tumblr tags in polls. But those people also accuse them of being too straight...)
4. For your answer to question 3, are they canon?
They are in my heart. Also, I feel that their last conversation was as close to canon as they could get.
5. What was your first fandom, and how old were you?
I was deep into Harry Potter for a long while in my life. That's what got me into fanfiction and tumblr. I still have a sweet spot for what it represented to me in my childhood and the stuff I took away from it despite the actions of some extreme lady.
6. What is your most unhinged fandom creation to date?
My Twilight Au fic 🤣
Was written as a parody, but somehow ended up being way too wholesome.
The power of pasta is my one crack fic, so there's also that.
7. Do you remember what started you off creating fandom content, and if so, what was it?
I was an avid consumer for years, but it was all thanks to the Supergirl fandom that I dared to try and create something. I was in the process of coming out and accepting myself for who I am, which, despite being in a very open and accepting environment and family, was really hard on me. Both the show, and especially the fandom, were what helped me not only to come out but also to see it in a positive light. It made me understand the meaning of pride, and I am forever grateful for that. That's why I decided to dedicate my time to creating stuff myself as thanks to this amazing community and to do my best to keep it active.♥️
8. Do you let people you know in real life see your fandom creations?
Some, yes. I have a few friends who know I write, but had not read any of my stuff. I have a few I share my art with, though.
9. How do you feel about fanworks of fanworks? Has anyone ever made something based on a thing you made?
Someone wrote a fic based on my art a while ago, and I'm still excited about it!
10. What feeling do you most often try to evoke with your creations?
Depends on the content. Each piece has its own purpose. I try to aim for fluff, but I've been told I accidentally write a lot of angst... oops?
11. Has someone ever paid your work a compliment (in any form) that has stuck with you, and what was it?
I'm always excited when fandom friends tell me they like my stuff. Or just anyone in general. It just warms my heart.
12. What’s your favourite thing someone else has made that you’ve seen in the last 24 hours (and link it if you can find it again!)
Have you read the most recent space log update? It's pretty cool...
13. Give a small sneak preview of something you’re working on right now (eg a couple of sentences of fic from a WIP, a gif set theme, a small piece of a larger picture, whatever you feel happy to share)
"Alex, you're saying that as if we're not literally standing at the entrance of a school for fairies." Kara said as she rested her hand on the handle of her large blue suitcase.
"Fair point."
"It is ridiculous, isn't it? Like, fairy collage, it just sounds so…"
"Bizarre?" Alex raised an eyebrow as a small chuckle escaped her lips.
Kara sheepishly nodded.
"Well, yes. Very. But that's our lives now, I suppose," Alex shrugged and shoved her hands in her jeans's pockets.
"You mean my life. You're going to badass school for ass kicking," Kara teased her sister.
Because apparently I'm not done making AUs based on questionable IPs.
And a bit of my card game AU:
Lena was the one to drag Andea to sneak out of school for a change. Only unlike her best friend, Lena didn't drag her out to a party or to drink alcohol, but instead to the local game shop where she could learn more about that mysterious game. Andrea wasn't as excited as her, but reluctantly agreed (if only to get out of trigonometry class). Fight for Justice, while being a bit too cheesy, Lena couldn't deny the strange allure of the name. She was fascinated to learn the different ways the game could change from moment to moment, the various objectives one can approach to win the game, and she couldn't help but absolutely adore the art on each and every card.
14. Have you ever seen/read anything made by the person who tagged you? If so, what was it and what was your favourite thing about it? (pick a favourite if there are several)
Rich girl with issues is a masterpiece, and you should all go read it!
15. Do you leave comments on fandom works, and if so how would you describe your comment style?
I try to always comment, and especially on stuff I like. I don't think I have a specific style tho😅
16. How many works in progress do you currently have? Will you finish them all?
I have about 12 that I actively started, but more that are in the concept phase. Ideally, I'll finish them all eventually.
17. what’s the longest it’s ever taken you to finish a fandom project?
It's been almost 2 years since I started The Art Of The Game. I'm close to the end, but it's been a while...
18. Describe the thing you made most recently in a way that is technically true, but also completely misleading. Link the thing if it’s published!
The hottest new trailer for the film we all have been waiting for;)
19. Do you ever engage with fanworks for a fandom you’re not in? Which one(s) and how did you get into it?
I feel like a foreigner when I see stuff from other fandoms, and I usually don't know enough about it to interact with it.
20. Recommend a fan work from your fandom to your followers
@awaitingrain has some really amazing artwork with adorable chibi designs! I'd recommend checking out her stuff!
Suggested tag list, but there are no rules here, follow your heart.
@eqt-95 @fazedlight @autisticlenaluthor @snowydragonscave @missluthorwillseeyounow @luthordamnvers have fun;)

Hello! I am not sure if anyone will be interested in this haha but I am taking starpollo prompts!!! Only starpollo/Kara x Lee prompts since that's really the one thing I write and I'd rather write what I am comfortable with and know so I can ensure better quality than if I were to write a ship or characters that I haven't really written, etc.
Some rules/notes (because it's better to be safe rather than sorry and to ensure I won't get any weird requests or just ones that I won't accept):
• Any level of detail is allowed, though the more specific the more likely I am to choose your request
• I have the right to refuse any requests
• Do not expect an immediate response or upload
• Generally sticking to one shots, poetry, and drabbles. I am NOT taking requests for longer fics but I may end up writing one if I really like your request. If you have a specific format you're wanting let me know
• Fics will be uploaded to my AO3 which goes by the username Just1MoreWallflower (it is also linked in my bio) but I will also post links to completed requests on here
- I will not write smut. I can/will do some NSFW/spice but not very much/nothing super explicit
Wills:
• I can write them in a romantic or platonic sense
• hurt/comfort
• comfort
• angst
• whump
• fluff
• light NSFW
• any combination of those
• crack possibly, depends what the prompt is (I RARELY write crack)
• dark/serious subject matter (this will be on a case by case basis. I am generally open to pretty much anything unless it's anything that triggers me personally, etc.)
• headcannons
• AUs
Wonts:
• I will not include OCS or anything or do y/n writings
• as previously stated, smut
• going along with smut i will not write kinks
• non-con/rape/sexual assault, etc.
• romanticization or fetishization of abuse
• crossovers
• polyamory (I will only write Kara x Lee, I will not include a third person with them in a romantic/sexual sense BUT I can/will write love triangle situations)
• if you have any questions because of anything I may not have mentioned/covered here, let me know!
• you can send requests either through asks, pms, or comments!! as long as i am notified/can see it
But yeah, there you go! Someday I will probably definitely open requests to either at least more ships and characters from the show or just more ships and characters in general from different fandoms but since Kara and Lee is like the only thing I'm writing right now that's the only requests I'll take. Again, not sure if anyone would be interested but in case anyone is, here you go! I'd love to make any ideas any of y'all might have for this pair come to life! Happy holidays everyone!

20 Questions More
This is a deeper and more detailed version of the 20 questions for AO3 fanfic writers. Thanks to @TetsujinOtaku88 for the tag. I'm doing this #Supercorp style.
1) How do you keep getting ideas for your ship / fandom?
I think the Supercorp Fandom is pretty self-perpetuating because the canon needs to be fixed and there's lots of AUs to put them in. Plus there are so many talented people whose art, video edits, and fanfic fuel each other.
2) Which authors inspire you in your fandom, and why are they so freakishly good?
Following the answer above I think the beauty of Supercorp is that it attracts really talented creators. I love reading @searidings, @jazzfordshire's fix-its and canon-adjacent stuff, @lgbtimelords, @coffeeshib, @mycatismyeditor, and @snowydragonscave just to name a few. They have such a deftness of language and an understanding of the characters that it's hard to stop reading!
3) Aside from the characters of your main ship, who are the characters you love to write?
I really love Sam Arias, Jess, and Alex. I wish I could get a better handle on Kelly because DANSEN forever. I also have a soft spot for Eliza and a deliciously evil liking for Lillian.
4) Are there pairings or tropes you know for sure you'd never write about? Which ones?
Karamel, Lames, Top Lena, Bottom Kara. To each their own. It's just not my thing.
5) What is your writing process and why is it cursed?
Carry around a little notebook to scribble ideas, lines, sometimes whole scenes. Figure out a rough outline / structure / plot. Do unnecessary amounts of research. Open doc file. Plunge into dismay and self-doubt. Watch the show. Get frustrated. Open the doc file. Be filled with despair and self-loathing. Get a blast of inspiration and productivity. Cycle through mental instability, writer's block, and actual writing. Get dragged by Kara and Lena to unanticipated places that derails what I intended to do. Sighing and doing what the muses want. The elation of completion. Struggling with summaries and tags. Posting. Crippling anxiety and running away from AO3. Lather, rinse, repeat.
6) What is your favorite part of your writing process?
The elation of completion. The unnecessary research is fun too.
7) What’s the weirdest thing you’ve had to research for a fic?
Cherry tree mutations and the structure of yakuza organizations in modern Japan.
8) Is there a particular writing rule you struggle with (grammar, spelling, tense, reality in general)?
Different tenses in the same document. Also it's and its.
9) What was your hardest scene to write so far and why?
Describing Kara's post-PZ night terrors and Lena’s fever dreams in Deliverance. Also the action sequence at the end of that story was so difficult.
10) Have your characters ever done something you didn’t expect, changing your plot completely?
ALL THE TIME.
11) If you could converse with any of the characters, who would it be and why?
Both of them. After I come to my senses and out of a dead faint because I was meeting them at all. And then I would die of sapphication.
12) What are some of the tropes or themes that you find yourself returning to in your writing?
Oh my usual tags are: light angst, tooth-rotting fluff, friends-to-lovers, Lena needs a hug, Kara gets a hug.
13) What's your most important resource as a writer?
Talking with other writers!
14) Can you share some of your strategies for editing and revising your work?
I usually give it some time before I edit so I can have relatively fresh eyes. Spell checking, punctuation, and grammar suggestions help you catch things but NOTHING beats reading it over yourself.
15) Which is worse: making the summary, picking the tags, or the anxiety when you post your fic?
Definitely the anxiety!!!
16) How do you define sucess for your fanfic - hits? Kudos? Comments? Bookmarks? Or just if you like it?
I think it's good to track kudos and I love getting comments. But ultimately I wrote for my enjoyment or for my peace of mind because the idea would not let me go.
17) Do you have a playlist for your favorite character / ship?
Nope but that's not a bad idea. 🤔
18) If fan art was going to be made from your work, which fic would you pick and which fan artist would you like to create it?
Wow I'd be thrilled if any of them got art. I am partial to the way @rustingcat draws Sakura blossoms though so maybe Cat for No Wrong Seasons.
19) How many WIPs do you currently have?
8 total. Finishing "the Arcana", "The Sound of Veracity" (Part 2), Prequel and Smutilogue of "Always With Me, Always With You", Supercorptober 2023 "Art" prompt, SG Mayhem fic, the Telepathy/Empathy fic, the Body Swap fic.
20) What's your advice to new fanfic writers?
I posted my first Supercorp story in March 2023 feeling it would be completely lost in this large fandom and having no hope for it. I felt that I was too late. That everything had been done (and done better). I did find readers who liked and some who really loved my work. But mostly I learned to write for myself, which has truly been a gift. Write for yourself. Write what you'd want to see. You'll get better at it over time.
Tagging but no pressure: @fyonahmacnally @nottawriter @chaotic-super @luthordamnvers @fazedlight

Okay, that's True Grit. That's entirely True Grit. Exact same plot, exact same tone, exact same Coen-wannabe dialogue (and Tom King is no Coen Brother)... all King did was transpose a bit of a by-now-generic high fantasy/space opera setting onto True fucking Grit. It's not even that obscure a work to rip off. There was a remake in 2010. Hailee Steinfeld debuted in that movie and she's still playing a 'Young' Avenger.
Oh, but hey, there's Supergirl in the Rooster Cogburn role. That's different, right? Because Supergirl is Supergirl and not a drunken, cynical badass type?
Tumblr media
youtube
And if you've seen True Grit, either version, you pretty much know how it goes (aside from a shock value ending that is, surprise, deeply cynical and mean-spirited). King mercilessly mischaracterizes Kara into this very 90s bad grrl caricature--she calls Superman a little bitch at one point, because he's not as tuff as herrrr--and the bad guys all go "oh, you can't beat me, you're just a girl!" Aren't we past this?
I found the premise pretty unbelievable... I know comic writers have to know up with far-fetched scenarios, since the real top-tier superheroes are unbeatable otherwise... but Supergirl has turned 21 and wants to get drunk. She doesn't want to do this with any of her friends, apparently, so she takes a barely controllable starship to a sector of space with only red suns... she can't just borrow a red sun room in the Fortress of Solitude or wherever... and she lands on this world that's a hellish dictatorship where people are killed for laughing at jokes about the king... she brings Krypto along, who is also depowered... and she doesn't bring any kind of communication device so she can call a Green Lantern or someone for help... and she's gone for months, but no one thinks to look for her.
And the villain... this is another one of the very few changes from True Grit, where the killer is just a random thug, the kind of guy you'd expect to impulsively kill someone. Here, he's a criminal mastermind that can summon up magic that nearly kills Supergirl and he almost randomly hooks up with this gang of superpowered mass murderers (who indulge in ethnic cleansing so frequently that you'd think a Green Lantern or someone would go after them--seriously, they are depopulating planets on a weekly basis) so it takes more than five seconds for Kara to rout him.
There's also a super heavy-handed segregation/racism metaphor. I mean, it is TOS, "all his people are black on the left side and white on the right side!" blatant. Like, embarrassingly hamfisted.
And this comic is WORDY. Not only is OC donut steal Hailee Steinfeld doing her Coen act every time she speaks, but she also narrates, choking every panel with multiple paragraphs of PROSEPROSEPROSE. Everything is a speech, everything is a monologue. Mike Flanagan would read this and say "hey, buddy, don't you think you're overdoing it a tad?" And there's some good art here--that's the one real positive of the comic--but it is just drowned out by King not trusting his artist one iota to tell a story.
Tumblr media
Supergirl is given this really stock "it sucks to be Superman" angst, which we're all tired of with Clark, right? Is it really fresh to just transpose him being broody and violent onto Kara? All the cursing and casual violence would be a little more appropriate for Power Girl, but I guess that wouldn't subvert expectations like making the main character an embittered Supergirl. Clearly, we're supposed to find all this shocking and edgy, but it just comes off risible. You're really going to have Krypto the Super-Dog and dead babies in the same exact story?
And since when does Supergirl hang out with Krypto? I thought her pet was Streaky. King goes all pre-Crisis with Comet the Super-Horse showing up and really being a man with a magic spell cast on him, but he doesn't know that Supergirl's pet is Streaky the Supercat? Boooooo.
