Sometimes I get bogged down in the minutiae of writing books, the grind of it, and the feeling that I'm not making any progress (because writing books takes time and there's a certain level of forgetting that one is finished because I jump right into the next one).
But I just looked up from my desk and I'm really glad I set my office up the way I did because...

the thing frequently cited as eddie’s Mistake in s5 is “quitting his job without talking to chris” which i really struggle to understand because on one level i don’t think a parent is obligated to talk to their 10 year old child about a career decision and i also don’t think a 10 year old child can be expected to provide reasonable insight on the best approach to their own trauma. and on another level i think this implies that if eddie had talked to chris then he would have Known he didn’t Have to quit his job and could have never been miserable at dispatch … but like. eddie was not fit for active duty. he was right to quit his job! there was a reason bobby didn’t let him come back. his Mistake was using christopher’s supposed needs as his motivation and as an easy excuse to continue repressing his trauma and burgeoning anxieties and to continue marching forward without closely examining what he was trying to get away from. there is a world in which eddie quitting firefighting and being miserable at dispatch for the rest of his days COULD have been the answer and a genuine sacrifice he chose to make as a parent, but that’s not what he was doing—he was convincing himself he was making a genuine sacrifice when what he was actually doing was trying to keep a lid on all the boxes holding his issues.
i also struggle with the idea that the mistake eddie is making Now is “moving to el paso without talking to chris” for similar reasons. like, i don’t think a 14 year old is equipped to make decisions like that, even if they’re for his own sake, or for dealing with his own trauma. there is a world in which eddie packs up and moves to el paso because genuinely, it is better for chris, it’s where chris is thriving, and he’d be well within his right to do so even if it theoretically blocks chris from returning to life in LA—it’s not a mistake for eddie to make the unequivocal decision about where they live lol. the actual problem is that he’s once again using chris thriving in a different environment as an excuse to repress the fact that the reason he’s taking this drastic decision he doesn’t want to take is because he doesn’t trust himself. probably chris IS having a good time in texas. but eddie doesn’t want to think about the wounds that lead him to believe he can’t give chris what he needs, or that lead him to actually hurt chris, so instead he is making another ingenuine sacrifice to avoid feeling things he thinks he doesn’t deserve to feel, or shouldn’t be feeling. of course we know that LA is his home and staying in el paso isn’t going to end up being the right decision, but it’s not the wrong decision because they shouldn’t move away ever or should never be sad ever and eddie should know that, it’s the wrong decision because he’s not being honest with himself about why he’s making it… which was also the case in s5.

sorry but i actually love that season three of yellowjackets turns the viewers' expecation of shauna on their mf heads. since the first season, shauna is our focal character, the one we see the most and know the most about in the present timeline, with the teen post-crash timeline informing how/why she came to be the way she is 25 years later.
through season 1, we THINK that shauna is unhappy in her adult life because of the way she fell to the wayside, lost in jackie's shadow. we THINK that she starts her affair with adam because she's bored with the stagnancy of her life, but after 19 months of life or death survival in the wilderness, any semblance of safety and normalcy would be mind numbingly boring. adult shauna is a stay at home mom. she collects ceramic bunnies and goes to yearly birthday lunches with her dead best friend's parents. it doesn't always read that she has the capacity for cruelty within her, but it's always been there. we see that immediately in the adult timeline as shauna has no qualms about killing the rabbit thats in her garden and preparing it like she would with any other game meat (HOW she killed said rabbit also speaks to her cruelty...bluntly with a shovel, rather than slicing its throat like we see in the wilderness). teen shauna's capacity for cruelty is revealed slower, with the pressure building as shauna fucks her best friend's boyfriend and becomes pregnant with his baby. as she lies to jackie, fights with her, and pushes her away (ultimately leading to jackie's very preventable death, as even taissa points out that jackieshauna's squabbling could be resolved if only she Talked To Her). this capacity for cruelty is then overshadowed by the strength of her grief, which informs the bulk of her season 2 characterization.
in season two, we THINK that adult shauna's actions can be explained by the deep amount of grief she felt at the loss of jackie. and the guilt she holds knowing that she could have saved jackie if not for her own stubbornness, her own cruelty. which is all true! shauna's grief is only heightened by the complications of her pregnancy (re: months of starvation / jackie for dinner / belt soup / starling stew all not providing enough nutrients for neither shauna nor the baby) and the loss of her firstborn child (who is unfairly deified by lottie and her wilderness cult because they, like shauna, are looking for a way to persist through the horrors that they are forced to survive). the psychological fake-out of shauna Feeling and Sensing her child, but not being able to physically reach him or comfort him. similarly to how she Feels and Senses jackie despite not being able to physically reach her. so shauna sits out there in the meat shed with jackie, playing MASH and doing her makeup and talking her literal ear off trying to ignore that she was who put jackie there. and taissa? poor taissa's well-meaning, pragmatic attempt at helping shauna go through the motions of grieving by laying jackie to rest via cremation goes horribly awry when The Wilderness 'decides' that feasting on jackie is the only way for the yellowjackets to stay alive. and if grieving jackie isn't bad enough for shauna, she loses one child and then is forced to butcher another. javi was a little boy!!! and was clearly shauna's surrogate brother/son figure in season 1!! so YEAH, if i just ate my best friend in a not-fun-gay-way, lost my wilderness pregnancy but hallucinated that i didnt (and also hallucinated/dreamt that my teammates helping me through labor ATE said baby because that's something that they Do Now) ((also x 2, if my whole soccer team saw my v*gina i'd become evil too lbr)), then had to carve up and eat one of the few people i had the ability to feel soft/protective towards, i think i too would be Not Doing Well!!!!!
so yeah, in the months before season three, i am absolutely not surprised that shauna's unchecked grief has turned into anger. months and months of lottie's religious fanaticism asserting that the loss of the baby was a sacrifice to the wilderness that brought on the miracle of spring is incredibly dismissive to shauna's experience with pregnancy and grief/loss. we see in season 2 that lottie (and others) had attached themselves to the baby as a factor to motivate their survival, but lottie always took it one step further, claiming group parentage (ownership? of "our baby" aka shauna's baby, aka the team's motivation to survive). as lottie's mental state continues to deteriorate, her dedication to the wilderness, its messages, and its sacrifices reaches a new level of intensity (as proven by her consistent attempts to sway travis and akilah into connecting with 'it', even when both characters voiced their concern about the potential dangers). of course shauna wants nothing to do with the summer solstice ceremony, even when she is being honored as The Mother of The Child. she doesn't want to be honored for hers/the child's sacrifices, she wants to grieve!! and honestly, the only healthy grieving we see from shauna come in episodes 1&2, as she vents in her journal about the current state of her world and then reburies the child on her own terms. of course shauna is carrying resentment for coach scott ditching her in labor (only to later flee the scene after the cabin was burned down). of course shauna is power hungry, she was made to feel secondary to jackie her entire adolescence and now has been stripped even further of her autonomy. so shauna results to some desperate measures in order to reclaim her identity within the group. BUT!!! shauna's rightful anger causes her to lash out in some un-rightful ways. her capacity for cruelty outweighs her grief. her competitive edge resurfaces during the game of capture the bone, where she tackles/bites mari as a ill attempt at reclaiming her power and autonomy. she spits in mari's food, doesnt offer to help find her. she wants to make coach scott pay for what she THINKS that he did, so much so that she strong-arms the rest of the team to vote ben guilty. she wants to burn him at the stake???? and then enables melissahat to slice ben's achilles???? she restrains the scientists who can offer them all a way home. she shoots at melissa, the only person who has been exhibiting any softness/kindness towards her. the more shauna gives into her anger, the more primal and connected to the wilderness she is. the more she comes into her own power, the less she wants to go back home and fade back into the shadows. she wanted this. she always had the power to become this. why are we surprised about how she ended up 25 years later?

love how shadow milk & eternal sugar are one of the only beasts who has matching costumes with their ancient counterparts
like good for them but still-
Tbh they probably thought of it for Pure Vanilla and Shadow Milk just to capitalize on Shadow Milk's popularity and get more money. Then they decided to continue the trend with Hollyberry and Eternal Sugar in order to get more money. All to take advantage of the audience they probably know well enough by now lol
Once again the straight pairs (BurningCheese and MysticCacao) are shafted despite being equally interesting and peak and canon. We could've had a swap AU with Herald of Abundance Burning Spice and Grieving Warmonger Golden Cheese. We could've had either a Dark Cacao that embraced Apathy and a Mystic Flour that grew in power and expressed contentment in her victory and newfound companion, or the opposite: a Mystic Flour that saw the truth in Dark Cacao's words and tried to become resolute like him, either coming back to the light in the process or becoming a new type of villain with an evolved mindset that makes her more dangerous. Never forget what they took from us

Headcanon:
Balor is either a fallen noble or a runaway noble (like James from pokemon: rich kid runaway due to family issues).
Edit: I personally believe he got his scar from an assasination attempt by enemies ordered by someone related (power stuggles) or not (enemy/rival family)

something i like about the witcher books, both by design and by coincidence is that the characters come first, and their sad or fucked up backstories come later. because the story doesn’t start dancing around you trying to get you to pity or sympathize with the cast, it just allows the characters to all be themselves. they, and the story they’re in, don’t exist for the audience’s validation. which causes some discomfort, yes, but it rings true, it exists without insecurity
#basically thinking about how netflix ruined their yennefer’s character by starting out with the sad backstory#when the point of yennefer is that she’s not defined by her sad backstory and she became the woman she wanted to be#and also that when you find out about her sad backstory it’s not meant to absolve her of anything#actually it reveals her guilt in DOUBLE PARENT MURDER and that whole scene is like yes i’m guilty and idgaf#she’s not meant to be pitied ever because she’s yennefer of vengerberg what don’t you understand#and i don’t think they’ll necessarily do this with milva because i feel like even though i disliked the writing of season 1 it was ambitious#and the writing has just gotten lazier and worse since#so for season four i barely have expectations that the characters will be anything more than cardboard cutouts#but i also just feel like if they reveal milva’s backstory in a ‘yep here’s backstory’ manner without the emotional spikes#which these moments have in the books—whenever milva talks about anything of her past it’s emotional#then they will hasten their failure of her (which is inevitable but they will hasten it)#i say this bc i feel like people forget about milva’s emotional beats and i have no idea why#it’s possible everyone just caught vampire brainrot but like milva had solid character background built out in baptism of fire#baptism of fire is all of their book . heart emoji. love emkji. kissy emoji#the elbow-high diaries

Ouaw drawing headcanons. Because I can.
Gideon is actually really good at drawing. Due to his mechanic skills, whenever he’s having trouble with a certain piece of machinery—especially a delicate one that he can’t really fiddle with continuously without risk of breaking it permanently—he will draw a scaled mock-up of the machine, including its parts, and figure out the issue. It’s always incredibly detailed, and it’s a genuine work of art in its own way, even if Gideon doesn’t think so. No, he can’t draw figures or anything, but still life? Done.
Gideon is actually the reason why Torbek started drawing in the first place. Torbek couldn’t really figure out how to draw the intricate details of a piece of machinery, or even have it be entirely accurate, but he did figure out how to draw figures well. During the days of the Carnivale, Torbek would be found drawing various employees—usually Kremy. They were also really good, but the only person that really hyped Torbek up about his drawings was Gricko.
Speaking of, Gricko is really good at drawing beasts. Like, as good as Gideon is at drawing machinery. Except Gricko can only draw beasts. If he tries to draw literally anything else, it looks like a blind toddler with no arms drew it. But his beast drawings are incredibly detailed, and is almost like seeing the real thing.
Frost is like. Slightly above average when drawing anything. And that’s mostly because it was really the only thing he could do in the little time he had between studies. He draws semi-realistically, for his skill level. He’s not as good as Gideon or the goblinoids, but he’s pretty decent.
Kremy is average at drawing. Sure, he can do it, but not well. The few times he does draw is mostly little doodles when making up a heist plan.

Imo considering the fact Bella didnt want to marry arthur either i always assumed the implication was them being similar to where if swapped they'd make the same mistskes bc fundamentally they were both forced to marry by Daniel. At best Arthur allowed Bella a chance to somewhat get away from him. (Dont get my wrong love daniel but Arthur genuinely thought bella loved him and bella likely thought the same)
Also saying it now i think the doll maker could be bella bc she wanted to be a seamstress and aside from making clothes for dolls you know what would have you making dolls? Having a kid.
Excellent point and a fascinating theory!
