For two days I've been nonstop wondering what song Costee's Miten sut mielest poistetaan reminds me of, because intro sounds so similar but with Costee's going up where my mind instinctively wanted to go down in the guitar riff.
Juha Tapio's Mitä silmät ei nää is the song. Now I can finally get some peace and quiet in my brain.

Please help a starving Anon..... I need more Mother Hen Hal from you...The way you write him and the characters are so good and perfect(idc if anyone disagrees), i am dying../silly/nf
It can have anything you wish to add, maybe a sprinkle of hurt/comfort (let's not forget the queers(BatLantern) too/verysilly)/lh
Yeah, you can absolutely have more mother hen Hal!!! This one is a little early in the relationship, pre-Flittermouse, and Dick-centric.
The Littlest Wayne: Mother Hen (Dick)
Tumblr media
"B! Thanks for coming to get —"
Dick stops and tilts his head as the window of the Lambo rolls down. It's not Bruce, here to pick him up from a celebration at Titan's Tower he was just a smidge too drunk to drive himself home from.
It's Hal.
"Hi, kid," he greets. "Bruce was asleep when you texted. I told him to chill out and I'd get you instead."
"Oh, hi," Dick says, a little off-kilter. His grin only wanes a little. "Yeah. Okay."
He walks around the car and climbs into the front passenger seat, brows furrowed. It's the first time they've been alone together since Bruce told the boys that they started seeing each other.
"Thanks."
"No problem. Have you eaten in a while? Might hit a drive-through before we get back. My treat as long as you don't tell Alfred."
Dick nods slowly, staring at Hal like he can't quite figure everything out. Hal just shoots him an easy smile, then focuses his attention on the road.
They're quiet for a while, the radio playing some top 10 hit softly through the speakers neither one of them recognizes. When Hal pulls up to order them some food (and how curious that he knows Dick's usual) then waves away Dick's effort to pay, the man can't help but say something.
"You don't... have to do that."
"It's like thirty bucks, champ. I've got it," Hal chuckles.
"I don't mean the food."
Hal looks at Dick curiously. It's probably the fact that he's still pretty sloshed, but he feels especially vulnerable in the car with him, and can't quite keep his thoughts to himself.
"You don't have to pretend to care about Bruce's kids just because you're dating Bruce." Even as he says it, he knows it was mean and dismissive. Dick chews on the inside of his cheek and can't figure out how to take that back, so he stops talking.
Hal doesn't respond. Dick can't make himself look at Hal's face, so he fiddles with the Nightwing charm dangling off his cellphone.
"Here's your meal, sir. Enjoy," says a fast food employee. Hal thanks her quickly, then pulls into a parking lot and kills the engine. Dick listens to him rustle through the bag and sort out what belongs to whom for a minute, then gently takes his portion from him when it's offered.
"Hey," says Hal. Dick pretends he's too preoccupied with opening the sauce packet for his chicken nuggets to look up. "Okay. I'd probably be a little skittish after dropping a bomb like that, too. So, just listen for a sec, okay?"
"Kay," he mumbles through a mouthful of fries, trying very hard not to feel like he's eight years old and sitting in Commissioner Gordon's office, waiting to find out if Bruce will assume guardianship and take him home, waiting to see if he'd be accepted or rejected.
"I think Bruce is it for me."
Hmm. Okay, not the words he expected to hear, but Dick is listening.
"You've probably heard that from his exes before. Something about Bruce is just...captivating. He's got his own gravitational pull, and I'm not interested in getting knocked outta orbit."
Hal pops a couple fries in his mouth. Dick sees his shoulders shrug in his periphery.
"I'm in love with him, is the point. Have been for a few years now, but I didn't think it was reciprocal until that battle in Coast City. But Bruce isn't just Bruce, is he?"
Hal reaches across the center console to gently squeeze Dick's knee.
"He's Bruce, and Dick, and Jason, and Tim, and Damian. He's got a whole gaggle of wonderful sons I'd love to get to know."
"We've worked together tons of times before," Dick says. He's barely picking at his food, too busy trying to figure out Hal's point.
"Sure. I've worked with Nightwing a lot. But that's not all you are. I don't really know anything about Dick Grayson, and I'd really like to."
Hal pulls his hand away and picks up his burger to take a bite.
"All this to say...I know you guys are mostly grown. You're used to having one parent and don't really need another one, and, damn, I don't know the first thing about any of that. But I'm in this for the long haul, and you can rely on me. I don't want any of you believing you're just an afterthought to me. Okay?"
Oh. Oh.
In lieu of an answer, and also because his throat feels too tight to speak, Dick just nods and goes back to eating. They finish their food in silence and Hal gets out to dispose of the trash, then turns the engine again to take him the rest of the way home. As he parks and they leave the garage, Dick throws his arms around Hal. He pretends the stinging in his eyes is some weird effect from the alcohol when Hal hugs him back just as tight.
"Goodnight, kid," he murmurs. "Go take a glass of water and some ibuprofen to bed with you for that hangover in the morning."
"Yes, mom," Dick snorts, teasing, but he detours to the kitchen with a shy little grin anyway.

Wildland Firefighters Deserve Fun Children's Museum Exhibits Too!
Tumblr media
Why do the structure crews get to have all the fun, huh? Go to just about any children's museum and you're likely to find a little fire station or a fire truck, probably with some fun but flimsy costumes, maybe a fake fire hose to haul around or a toy axe. There's probably a mural on the wall of a cartoon burning building, complete with dalmatian. And kids love it! So many kids fall in love with the idea of being a firefighter at those exhibits.
But not once have I seen or heard of a similar exhibit for wildland firefighters. Possibly this is because most people don't realize that wildland firefighters and structure firefighters are not the same thing. Which is all the more reason to have an exhibit about it for kids, honestly! Let's start the learning young about what wildland fire is, how to stay safe from it, and what wildland firefighters do via an interactive, playful exhibit!
Since I work as a wildland fire dispatcher and study disasters, and I've designed museum exhibits before at other jobs, I figured this was an "I'll just do it myself" sort of scenario. And thus, my little wildland exhibit was born!
Tumblr media
The idea behind this exhibit is to create a simple, semi self-directed play area for ages ~4-8 themed around a wildland fire scenario of protecting a small cabin from an approaching wildfire. It would have three main play areas: the Velcro Forest, The Cabin, and the Firetruck Climber, and there would be simple signage sharing facts about what wildland firefighters do and how they are different from structure firefighters.
The murals throughout the exhibit would be detailed, showing the diverse terrain wildland crews can work in, and also some of the support they get from aircraft like helicopters and slurry bombers.
Tumblr media
Play Area 1: Firetruck Climber
The firetruck climber would be modeled after a Type 4 wildland engine, simplified into a kid friendly structure. It would have working lights that are non-flashing and low light for sensory safety, and the lights could be turned on and off from within the cab. Inside the cab is a dashboard with a toy radio, moving wheel, and two seats. Along the side of the truck is an interactive panel of pump controls, and a series of cubbies to store the play gear in the exhibit just like real wildland firefighters store their gear in their trucks.
The play gear would include costume yellow shirts, green pants, and boots just like what wildland firefighters wear, with an explainer that they wear very different gear than structural firefighters and don't use any portable breathing systems. Other gear would include toy Pulaskis (the wildland specific type of axe), toy hoes and rakes, and toy chainsaws.
Tumblr media
Play Area 2: The Velcro Forest
One of the main techniques for fighting a wildfire is removing the fuel it needs to burn, and that's what the velcro forest is all about. It is on the side of the exhibit closest to the fire (but the fire is not moving directly at it! You never work in front of a fire!). The trees are plastic covered foam blocks held together with velcro so they can easily be knocked down and then "cut" apart with the toy chainsaws. There are also moveable foam bushes on the ground.
The ground mural would include a strip of brown where anything on the forest floor had been scraped away to dirt, to represent the technique of cutting line.
Simple signage would explain the concept of removing fuel and cutting line to help stop the movement of dangerous fires.
Tumblr media
Play Area 3: The Cabin
The third play area is the cabin you are trying to protect from the oncoming fire. This area would primarily be focused around the concept of defensible space and how a home can be protected by clearing away landscaping and removing burnable items from areas such as porches.
Gift Shop
To carry the learning outside the exhibit itself, I'd love to the gift shop carry things like children's books about wildfire (though there aren't a ton to choose from, sadly), toy wildland firetrucks, wildland fire kids costumes, things in that vein.
--
So yes! Wildland firefighter based children's exhibit! I think it would be great fun, and serve as a good way to introduce children (and their parents) to the knowledge that wildland firefighters are very different than structure firefighters. Will this sort of exhibit ever actually exist? Who knows! But I sure think it should.

He I was wondering if you can write a George Clarke fan x reader Valentine fan fic based on the song perfect by ed Sharon
Perfect.
Tumblr media
George Clarke x Reader ff
Now Playing: Perfect by Ed Sheeran
Baby, I'm dancin' in the dark with you between my arms Barefoot on the grass while listenin' to our favourite song When you said you looked a mess, I whispered underneath my breath But you heard it, "Darling, you look perfect tonight" ~ Though I don't deserve this, you look perfect tonight
~~~
"Are you ready yet?" My boyfriend, George asked me for the 100th time. Today is Valentines Day and he had planned a day out for us. I may have taken a bit too long to get ready but he knows looking this good isn't easy.
"Just give me a few more minutes or else I'll look a mess!" I yelled from the bathroom. I was just adding a few more touches to my outfit.
"Okay I'm ready!" I said finally walking out revealing my valentine look to him.
"Damn girl, you look absolutely stunning." He replied, his eyes lingering up and down my body. I wasn't wearing anything too revealing but it was an outfit that flattered my body especially well. He loves when I show off my curves and usually I'm pretty hesitant to but today was different because I felt extra pretty.
"Stop!" I said waving my hand at him. He walked over to me and put a hand around my waist.
"You are just so perfect." He said as he kissed my cheek lightly. This was a sweet little moment. He stopped to look into my eyes. I could see his eyes soften a bit, with a look i've seen only once before, maybe adoration?
He's honestly the sweetest guy in the world. I love him to death and I always try to show my appreciation towards him.
"Well then ma lady, ready to go now?" He said in a posh little accent. I giggle and nodded my head.
We made our way towards his car. He opened the door for me and I smiled at him, receiving a chessy smile in return. I watched as he made his way around the car getting in.
"Music?"
"Always."
He chuckled turning on the radio. Perfect by Ed Sheeran had just come on. It's honestly one of my favorite songs, I just know it's gonna be stuck in my head all day now.
I reached for the volume button and turned it up. George looked towards me and smiled widely. He reached for my hand and grabbed my fingers, squeezing them tightly.
I look out the window, admiring the scenic view as the sun was setting. It was about 6:30 pm so it was getting pretty late.
>>>
We finally arrived to a location that I've never been to. I took in the surroundings and realized it was like a nice garden picnic area. It was pretty dark and seemed quite lonely besides a few people walking around the path.
I watched as George walked around the car to open my door. I got out and grabbed his hand. He didn't say a word and just led me down a dimly lit pathway away from the other ones.
To be honest, if I wasn't dating this man, you would have thought he was going to murder me.
As we got closer to the spot I assumed we were going to, I saw a ton of lights lighting up a small gazebo with a table underneath. There were two plates set up facing each other. The closer we got the more details I was able to see.
There was a trail of roses leading up to the table and plenty scattered all over the white table cloth. A vase holding full roses sat on the center of the table. Small fairy lights lit up inside the vase rather than water making it much prettier.
Beside the table sat a smaller table with a bucket on top filled with ice and a wine bottle. It was a beautiful sight and I cant believe that he did all this.
"Whats all this then?" I asked as he sat me on one side of the table sitting on the other.
"I wanted to make this night as special as my date." He smiled with a cheeky look on his face.
"Well this is certainly special but I'm afraid your date isn't this special."I said back smiling at him grabbing one of the red cloth napkins that was sitting near the plate and placing it on my lap.
"Nonsense! You're the most special person on this planet because you're just the most amazing person ever. You're beautiful, funny, caring, and you always deal with my crap so that makes you a little insane but special nonetheless." He ended as we both laughed at that comment.
"Thank you for that, and all this. Seriously, how did I end up with such an amazing boyfriend." I said reaching across the table for his hand.
"Anything for my one love." My heart was filled with so much warmth and happiness with those words and his expression.
"Sir, ma'am, the first course." We were so caught up in our little moment that we hadn't noticed someone walk up to our table. I look towards the person thinking it was a waiter but it was Arthur tv dressed up in I assume a waiter costume judging by the cheap looking tux he was wearing.
"Oh my gosh, Arthur! What has George done to you. " I exclaimed laughing at the sight.
"You might wanna hold all this shock for your entertainment." He said smiling ear to ear with his words. I gave him a look as if to say 'seriously' and he just nodded grinning.
Arthur put the plates down and walked away towards a small building I hadn't noticed earlier. Maybe I was too distracted by the whole adorable gazebo situation.
Suddenly, music began playing, and Arthur Hill came from the dark holding a guitar and started singing.
I looked at George in utter shock and just happy in general because he really got all of his friends to do something special for me.
I actually began tearing up a bit because this was just so sweet of all of them. I think George has noticed because he began squeezing my hand a little harder in a more reassuring way. I gave him a look as if to tell him not to worry.
We ate our meal listening to the soothing voice of Arthur. The food was really good, he had brought out my favorite meal but garnished to look like a lovely gourmet meal.
"Are you enjoying yourself?" George questioned sounding slightly nervous.
"Of course, this is honestly the best time of my life and it's even better that you're here sharing it with me." George moved his hand towards my face wiping at my cheek cupping my face slightly.
"I love you so much."
"I love you too."
>>>
After that amazing meal and entertainment. George grabbed my hand and led me towards another section of the garden. This time the trail was lit up with fairy lights along the floor in the shape of hearts.
They didn't illuminate brightly but the full moon helped provide more light. It was such a beautiful night filled with plenty of stars and a small breeze. It wasn't too hot and not too cold. It's almost like the night was perfect on purpose.
We finally stopped at a large oak tree, lit by of course, more string lights, creating a stunning visual. He wanted us to walk off the concrete path onto the grass but I was wearing heels.
"No problem." He said, picking me up and taking me underneath the tree. I laughed as he picked me up, giving him a quick peck on the cheek, making him smile widely again.
He set me down on a blanket I didn't notice earlier. He began taking my heels off carefully. I gave him a sweet smile, thanking him for it.
"George Clarke, you're such a gentleman." I gushed making an light pink tint appear on his cheeks.
"Come on!" He said pulling me up and walking me off the blanket to a section of grass. Music started playing on a speaker.
"May I have this dance. " He said with a posh accent. I laughed nodding, taking his hand.
He wrapped his hand around my waist as I placed mine on his shoulders holding onto him as he began leading us in a slow dance.
I looked up towards him, his blue eyes glistening in the moonlight.
I hadn't noticed he had also taken off his shoes. We were both barefoot on the grass dancing together underneath the moonlight. This moment seemed like an eternity. It was nice just spending time in eachother's arms like this. I placed my head on his shoulder taking a whiff of his musky scent. I wish we could stay like this forever.
>>>
We ended up staying like that for the next half hour, just swaying in eachothers embrace.
After a while we laid down together on the blanket looking up at the stars. I was wrapped in his arms taking in his warmth.
"Y/n?"
"Yeah?"
He let me go and sat up looking at me making me sit up. He grabbed my hands and looked me straight in the eyes.
"I am seriously so madly, deeply in love with you. You mean everything and more to me. I wish that one day we could share everything. You make me a better person, I am so in love with every aspect of you, from your amazing laugh, to the face scrunch you make when you get awkward, even the way you get when you're frustrated. I am just so in love with you." He finished, wiping at my cheek with a cloth he had pulled out from his pocket. I didn't realize I had been crying.
"George, stop. You're making me ugly cry. " I said releasing a breathy laugh. He shook his head smiling. "That just how I truly feel about you and I want you to always know how much you mean to me." I love this man so much.
"Sometimes I think I actually don't deserve you because you're just so perfect."
"Of course you deserve me, I don't deserve a man this amazing."
"Well, I think we're just perfect for eachother then."
~~~

Did you have any good recommendations for audio fiction podcasts? I scrolled through your blog a bit to find some and followed a couple but wanted to know if you have any favorites
Do I ever!
Granted, I shouldn't be taken as an average audio fiction enjoyer as my interests lean toward fun and cozy. I don't do much horror, and horror is HUGE in audio fiction. If you're looking for darker fare, I won't be much help, but if it's sci-fi and/or slice-of-life you want, I'm your person.
All-time faves, in no particular order:
Monstrous Agonies (by HR Owen), a fictional weekly advice radio segment for "night folk and members of the creature community." Very calm, very fun, and very topical - the problems are often clear allegories for relatable issues.
The Vesta Clinic (by AMC), a series of patient notes from some overworked and underpaid doctors on a space station.
Travelling Light (also by HR Owen), letters home from a previously cloistered member of a religious community, who is on a pilgrimage across the galaxy. Contains one of my favorite characters of all time.
The Fitzroy Diaries (from ABC listen), a cute slice-of-life that istg nobody has heard of. Has very fun and real characters, and the prose is delightful.
Vega (by Ivuoma Hall), a far future action-adventure courtroom mystery with a ton of narrative personality. Almost like listening to someone reenact their favorite movie, but their recap is as well written as the film itself.
The Bright Sessions (from Atypical Artists), recorded sessions of a therapist to people with superpowers. Of course it gradually expands to their misadventures outside Dr. Bright's office.
Moonbase Theta Out (by DJ Sylvis), which starts as transmissions from a moon base that has lost funding and is being shut down. But for Season 1, you're only getting the parts of the story the comms officer wants to tell.
Desert Skies (by Jared Carter), an emotion-filled series set in the first pit-stop on the journey to the afterlife.
Neighbourly (by Matthew OK Smith), a slightly anthological series of short stories about the strange and often supernatural residents of Little Street, one house at a time. Each one kinda reminds me of the really out-there and experimental episodes of Night Vale, which were always my favorite ones anyway.
Hamuel Burger (by Hamuel Burger), an absurd comedy in which a livestreamer from space is trying to speedrun assassinating the president? I think? It has made me belly laugh every time I've put it on.
Not an exhaustive list, and I'm sure there are others plenty worthy of joining these.
Honorable mentions: Someone Dies in this Elevator (an anthology which I just started but that seems great so far), Worlds Beyond Number (which is an actual play, not an audio drama, but it's my favorite actual play), Hardcore History (historical events in a narrative style), and the Gospel of Haven (which almost gave me a panic attack but which I can't stop listening to as it comes out)

i've said for years that modern!steve would be a massive taylor swift fan and he 100% got tickers to the eras tour and made a ton of friendship bracelets. i like to think he's more of a folkmore kinda guy but loves each album and is definitely a fan of this song
Seaside Rendezvous by Queen:
he's definitely a queen fan but is more into later albums like 'the works' and 'a kind of magic'. he does enjoy earlier queen songs but not this one. he mentioned once how it annoyed him and now robin has a (bad) habit of singing it to him just to piss him off
Lay All Your Love On Me by ABBA:
steve loves abba and if you disagree you can fight me on that. he has every album and listens to them pretty much all the time (except when he's on babysitter duties because he knows the kids would rip into him if they ever heard him listening) and this would be one of his favourite songs and one that he would absolutely sing in the shower
Still Rock and Roll To Me by Billy Joel:
he likes some billy joel stuff but not all of it but would totally tap his foot to this song if he heard it on the radio
Should've Said No by Taylor Swift:
he loves this song and debut!era and i have this one headcanon that if st was set in the 2000s/2010s he would totally play this on repeat after his breakup with nancy in s2 and act all moody and angsty whenever it played
I Am Not A Woman, I'm A God by Halsey:
this is one robin introduced him to and he would never in a million years admit that she has good taste in music so he just shrugs every time it plays in a 'yeh it's alright' kind of way but inside he's going feral and screaming the lyrics
I Know The End by Phoebe Bridgers:
modern!steve is the biggest ball of repressed angst so this is 100% one of his favourite songs and would be the one that saves him from vecna. he listens to it all the time, especially on his bad days, and he likes to drive around town with the windows down and just play this song on repeat until his head feels a bit clearer.

24 days til' Christmas
going dancing with boyfriend!choi san on christmas eve⋆꙳•̩̩͙❅̩̩͙‧͙ ‧͙̩̩͙❆ ͙͛ ˚₊⋆
----------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the downsides of dating a K-pop idol was that there was no privacy whatsoever. Which would result in yet another Christmas Eve at home, probably watching movies. Any moment spent with San was happy, but it was Christmas for Christ's sake!
What must a girl do to go on a simple date with her famous boyfriend? you thought to yourself.
You were making some shrimp jjigae (Korean stew) for San. San was arriving at the Incheon Airport that evening after the last leg of his tour. You were excited he would be home right in time for the holidays. It was still upsetting that the two of you couldn't go on a date on Christmas Eve like you usually did.
He had gained a ton of popularity after his comeback, the two of you were spotted at an Italian restaurant and it was all over the internet after 30 minutes. In just 10 minutes the whole internet knew what the two of you were eating, drinking, and wearing.
San's company didn't have rules against dating, but the two of you decided not to be obnoxiously public about your relationship. He talked about you in interviews and attended red carpets with you occasionally but that was all the two of you were comfortable with.
On your way to the airport, San's song came on the radio. You had your sister take a video of the two of you singing along to his song so she could send it to him.
San and the guys would be arriving at a private gate. Hopefully this time the fans didn't find out somehow. You waited there anxiously for him, looking around for any fangirls in the area every two seconds. Finally, you say your handsome boyfriend steps out immediately looking around for you. You were already running towards him and the second you entered his view, he abandoned his suitcase and ran to you spreading his arms out to you.
The scene was right out of a cheesy film. Hongjoong practically died from cringe but deep down he was so happy that his Sannie had someone he loved to come home to. Wooyoung being Wooyoung was videotaping the entire moment.
"Yeobo[Sweetheart], I've missed you so much," San said as he held you tight.
"I've missed you more," you sighed as you looked up into his eyes running your fingers through his hair.
CLICK! CLICK! CLICK!
Because no lovey-dovey moment lasts forever, the two of you heard the clicks of cameras along with the footsteps and screams of an atiny stampede.
San quickly took your hand and ran through the airport with the boys and their bodyguards following you behind. The two of you couldn't contain the giggles from the adrenaline rush running from fans like you were elementary school kids playing tag at recess.
Once you got away, you went to dinner with the guys and listened to their tales from tours. Including lots of pranks from Jongho and Mingi, and lots of scolding for San and Wooyoung from Hongjoong.
After dinner, you gave the boys their Christmas gifts since you would be with San in his hometown that day. You told them to open their gifts when they were at the dorm knowing that you would be awaiting a particular text from Seonghwa about how thankful he is that you got your hand on the "Ahsoka Tano's T-6 Jedi Shuttle" Lego Star Wars set.
San would be sleeping over your place before the two of you went to his hometown. After the two of you finished watching the newest episode of Single's Inferno, you thought it would be worth a shot to ask San what he would think about going to a Live Jazz club with you for Christmas Eve.
To the inquiry, as expected he answered "I don't think so," which was his nicer way of saying, "No we're going to get caught.
Even when you told him that your sister would be playing saxophone there and that you wanted to support her and the two of you could watch from backstage he was still very hesitant.
You knew that there would be a slim chance that San would agree with you, and you noticed a glint of guilt in his eyes when he said no to you.
To San, you were his kryptonite, he was physically unable to say no. to you without wanting to gauge his heart out of his chest. You went to bed with a bit of a heavy heart after overthinking in the shower and realizing that your relationship with San would never be normal.
. . .
The morning was perfect. San had made you breakfast in bed without burning down the entire kitchen. San was a great cook, but he was also a very messy one at that.
That afternoon the two of you wrapped up gifts for San’s family and baked gingerbread cookies while cozying up together and sipping hot chocolate and eggnog. It was perfect, festive, and domestic. But San knew that you were still thinking about the Jazz club occasionally texting your sister throughout the day to ease her nerves.
"Jagiya[baby], we are going to have to go somewhere really quickly," San started as he entered the living room putting your cost on.
"But San, it's a little late. I promised my sis I'd watch the live stream of her performance," you answered.
"I know and I'm sorry but there is an emergency formal meeting at the company and I don't want to leave you home alone, I know how much you like to get ready anyway," he explained walking over to you, ushering you to get up.
You gave him an irritated glare before springing up and squealing, "You know me too well babe,"
You got up and gave him. smooch on the cheek. You didn't care if it was a formal meeting. San could see how bored you were of watching the same holiday hallmark movies. He also knew how much you loved to dress up.
You did your makeup and wore a red cocktail dress, accessorizing it with a jewelry set you had removed from your brother who was completing his military service. You put on your favorite heels, give yourself a bold bloody red lip, and throw on your favorite trench coat.
San gawks at you for what feels like minutes before checking back into reality and getting up. "You look stunning darling," he said as he pulled you into his side by your waist and kissed you on your cheek.
San had already heated the car and opened the door for you before walking over to his side and getting in. He passed you the aux and you immediately started playing your favorite holiday tunes.
As San drove he began to take unfamiliar turns. He was oddly driving away from the direction of his company. You found this strange but shook it off as nothing.
The two of you sang along to Christmas tunes before he finally pulled into a parking spot. There stood the live jazz club that your sister was performing at. The two of you were right on time. San quickly got out of the car to open the door for you, taking your hand and helping you out of the car. "San what is this?" you chuckled in surprise.
"You know I can't say no to you baby," he replied, taking your hand and leading you into the club where the two of you had great seats. No one could see the two of you since the event seating was arranged in booths and the club was dimly lit.
Everything was perfect and quite discreet. You don't know how hard he had pulled this off. But you knew he had the help of your sister. You could tell she had been lying to you about something lately; you just didn't know what.
It was amazing, the two of you enjoyed music and a great meal. Sis was playing excellently as always until your favorite Christmas song was playing, "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" Other couples had been dancing all night.
San could tell that you wanted to dance to this song with him. You were practically swaying in your seat. He was afraid of the press ruining your date but he simply did not care in the moment when he stood up and held his hand out for you to take.
You looked up at him cracking the brightest smile he had ever seen grace your lips. The two of you swayed slowly to the music. You could feel stares whisper and some flashes but you didn't care. You were too focused on each other.
You were too focused on the feeling of love and excitement enveloping the two of you as you spun. There were already articles and posts up but when the two of you got home you were too infatuated with each other to glance at your phones. The two of you slept peacefully that night as Santa dropped your gifts off and feasted on the milk and cookies you had left out for him.

Chapter Nine: Wouldn't It Be Nice
Ch 1 - Ch 2 - Ch 3 - Ch 4 - Ch 5 - Ch 6 - Ch 7 - Ch 8 - Ch 9 - Ch 10 - More Coming Soon
Pairing: Cooper Howard/The Ghoul x Fem!Reader Summary: Tensions run high after the previous night's kiss and The Ghoul reveals a small part of his past. Tags: Slow burn (and I mean SLOWWW), angst, eventually more smut, language, canon-typical violence, chem/alcohol use, more tags will be added Posted on AO3: Smoothie and The Ghoul Word Count: 1.7k
The journey to the old associate is a lengthy one, likely spanning a few days at the very least. The landscape is mostly desolate, with sand dunes engulfing the remnants of old-world buildings. The memory of the previous night's kiss lingers heavily in your mind, leaving you curious about The Ghoul's thoughts on the matter. You resist the urge to ask. Instead you decide to keep your distance from him and look at your pip-boy to distract yourself. Focusing on the device, you navigate through its functions until you locate the radio feature, tuning in to some classic tunes from the past that fill the air.
As the familiar lyrics of “Orange Colored Sky” by Nat King Cole fill the air, you find yourself lost in the nostalgic melody. The rhythmic beat of the song creates a sense of comfort amidst the desolation. The radio crackles and the signal fades momentarily, but you manage to catch the few lines of the song before it returns to full clarity.
Slowing his stride, The Ghoul positions himself next to you. You sneak a glance in his direction, but his expression remains an enigma, offering no insight into his thoughts. However, he begins to hum along with the tune, his voice blending with yours in a harmonious duet. You can't help but wonder what would it be like to sway to the music in his arms. A faint smile tugs at your lips at the thought.
The two of you continue like this for some time, singing softly to the old tunes that fill the air. After a while, he extends a piece of jerky from his bag to you. Gratefully, you accept and savor a big bite. The flavor is unfamiliar, yet surprisingly delicious.
"What type of jerky is this?" you ask.
"Ass jerky.”
"Alright," you giggle, "The ass of what? I don't think I've had this kind before."
"Ghoul," he states plainly.
You burst out laughing at what you assume is a joke, only to realize it's not when he stares back at you blankly, munching on his own piece of jerky.
"...What."
Staring at The Ghoul in disbelief, the realization hits you like a ton of bricks. His stoic expression adds to the surreal nature of the moment, and as the truth sinks in, a wave of nausea washes over you. You start gagging uncontrollably, unable to contain your revulsion at the thought of consuming human flesh. His reaction surprises you as he bursts into laughter at your discomfort, his amusement contrasting sharply with your horror.
"Are you out of your fucking mind?!" you shout, your voice filled with disgust as you dry heave. "Oh my god. It was that dead ghoul I came across, wasn't it?"
"Soundin' like that vaultie," The Ghoul chuckles.
"Not all us vault dwellers come out that naive," you mutter quietly, the words barely audible to him.
"What'd you say?" he questions, eyeing you suspiciously.
"Hm? Nothing," you quickly reply, trying to brush off the tension. The Ghoul's skeptical gaze lingers on you, and without a second thought, you fling the remaining jerky at his face. The dried meat slaps against his cheek with a thud, slowly sliding down his face and plopping onto the dusty ground. The silence that follows is heavy as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by The Beach Boys suddenly starts blaring from your pip-boy.
♪ Wouldn't it be nice to live together in the kind of world where we belong? ♪
"Pick it up," he finally breaks the silence.
You raise an eyebrow, "Excuse me?"
"You heard me, Smoothie," he says, taking a step closer to you. "We ain't wastin’ good jerky just because you're too dainty. Pick… it… up."
Your eyes meet his in a fierce stare, both of you mirroring the intensity. Closing the distance between you, you stand almost nose to nose. As you gaze up at him, you notice the anger in his eyes, but you also catch a glimpse of Cooper Howard peeking through.
♪ After having spent the day together, hold each other close the whole night through ♪
"If you want to watch me bend over that badly, all you have to do is ask," you quip, a playful glint in your eye.
"Two choices, sweetheart,” The Ghoul's voice takes on a dark and gravelly tone. "Either you pick it up like a good girl, or I make you pick it up - and I won't be gentle."
Good girl. You muster all your strength to resist cracking under those words, a smug grin spreading across his face. In that moment, you can't help but wonder if he's being playful or if this is just his usual, asshole self shining through. After all, he has no shame when it comes to this shit.
♪ I wish that every kiss was never-ending ♪
Your mind races for a witty response, the lyrics of the song only adding to the awkward tension between you. His eyes bore into yours, a mix of challenge and arrogance that makes your skin crawl. With a defiant tilt of your chin, you sarcastically remark, "You better be prepared to catch me when I swoon from your overwhelming charm."
The Ghoul's smirk widens, a flash of malice glinting in his eyes as he replies, "Oh sweetie, I don't catch… I watch you fall.“
♪ You know it seems the more we talk about it, it only makes it worse to live without it ♪
As you crouch down to retrieve the jerky, a mix of resentment and anger swirls inside you. The act of picking up the tainted piece of meat feels like a bitter concession, a silent acknowledgment of the power play he has initiated. Standing back up, you hold out the jerky towards him, your gaze hardened with a mix of defiance and humiliation.
The Ghoul plucks the jerky from your hand with a satisfied smirk, relishing the control he holds over the situation. The tension between you crackles with unspoken words and unspoken desires, each gesture and exchange charged with a potent mix of attraction and power dynamics.
The tension between you lingers like a heavy fog as you trudge forward in uncomfortable silence, the music from your pip-boy serving as a strange soundtrack to the awkwardness that envelops you. With the sun sinking towards the horizon, long shadows stretching across the landscape, a sense of unease settles in your chest like a heavy weight.
As darkness descends, a canopy of stars twinkling overhead, The Ghoul's voice breaks the silence, his tone devoid of the earlier hostility. "We'll set camp here for the night. Keep watch while I get a fire going," he instructs, his words cutting through like a knife. You nod stiffly, grateful for the chance to have some space between you.
Sitting by the crackling fire, you wrap your arms around your knees, staring into the flames. The Ghoul settles across from you, his eyes fixed on the fire as well. After a moment of comfortable silence, you finally speak, your voice soft in the night air. "What did you mean the other day when you said you remembered Moldaver differently?"
His gaze shifts from the fire to meet yours, taking a moment to consider your question before answering, “I knew her as Miss Williams.”
“Miss Williams?” Curiosity fills you.
“I met her. Before the war,” he continues, “Which makes me curious as to how she’s still around.”
You ponder for a moment, lost in thought. "Seems like prewar folks are more common than I thought..."
"Oh yeah?" The Ghoul laughs. "You know a lot of 'em or somethin’?"
You chuckle softly at his question. "No, no," you reply, shaking your head slightly. "I just didn't think many people made it this far - ghoul or otherwise. Say... What's something you miss from before the Great War?"
“My daughter.” He answers immediately. His voice is soft, almost a whisper, filled with sadness and longing. The firelight dances across his face, casting shadows that seem to echo the weight of his words. You’re surprised he’s shared something so personal - he had a daughter?
"What is her name?" You ask gently, making sure to refer to her in the present tense, not wanting to add to the sting of her possible death.
He hesitates, his demeanor softening slightly as he considers your question. After a moment, he quietly responds, "Janey."
You rise from your spot and walk over to him, settling down next to him by the crackling fire. "Is that who Sorrel was referring to? Who you've been looking for?" you ask, your voice filled with genuine curiosity.
"Yes," he sighs, his voice heavy with weariness. Despite his usual guarded nature, there is a sense of trust that begins to form between you. "I've been lookin' for over 200 years and ain't found shit. No leads. Until now.”
"Moldaver," you whisper, your voice barely above a breath. "Do you think she knows something? Being prewar and all?"
He locks eyes with you, a subtle look of uncertainty in his eyes. "Thats what I aim to find out, Smoothie.”
"Well shit," you say, taking a deep breath before gently placing your hand on top of his. "We'll find your daughter. We'll find Janey, no matter what it takes."
He looks at you with soft eyes, as if no one ever truly wants to help him. Maybe it makes him question your intentions, wondering if you might be deceitful. After all, he knows nothing about you or your past. Will you ever tell him who you really are? Why do you even care so much about him? He flinches slightly at your touch and swats your hand away, a reflex you assume is born of decades upon decades of betrayal and disappointment.
“Sorry,” you mumble as you head back to your spot across from him. “I’m serious though. I will help you find her.”
The Ghoul grimaces and turns his back to you, his posture defensive and closed off. You sense a deep well of pain and longing within him, a father's desperate hope to be reunited with his daughter. Sitting in silence, you give him the space he seems to need to process your offer of help. After a few moments, he finally speaks, his voice rough with emotion.
"I appreciate the offer," he begins. "But this is somethin' I must do alone."
"We'll see about that," you respond, a steely determination in your voice. He gives you a look of annoyance, but you refuse to let him face this alone. This is no longer just a bounty to collect; it is so much more.

I like telling stories. I think a good one to tell right now is how exactly I got into progressive rock.
It all started with a single conversation with my family at dinner and a little band called King Crimson.
So for context, I've always had a subconscious bias towards strange, unconventional, and most importantly... long music for as long as I can remember. When I was younger this lead to me not really listening to much music aside from the things that met that specific standard, and I didn't really know how to find good music either. Most of the music I heard around me (aside from the music my dad listened to) just never really did it for me and I just listened to a small amount of songs that I found while growing up on the internet, and my dad of course.
But one of those things I stumbled upon in my early teenage years was In the Court of the Crimson King. I listened to it because the album cover intrigued me, and oh boy was I pleasantly surprised. It was the best thing I had ever heard, and was my new gold standard for quite a while.
At that point I wouldn't say music was a big passion of mine yet, I was just picky about what I enjoyed listening to. But fast forward a year or two that would change biggggg time. One afternoon my family and I were chatting at the dinner table and the topic of music came up. It was a sibling of mine who asked what everyone's favorite bands are and I think that was the first time I was ever asked that question because I was stumped. I knew a lot of music but I didn't have a favorite band, or did I?
Oh right. King Crimson.
I remember saying something along the lines of "I don't really have one but if I had to pick it would be King Crimson." But that didn't feel right, I only knew one album if theirs after all. So later that night I thought about the conversation a bit more. For some reason it really stuck with me and I sort of decided that night I would expand my tastes and find the music out there that I truly like. And that I did!
Over the next few years I listened to a ton of music, and I mean a ton. It started with more Crimson albums, then onto The Beatles and other classic bands because I was already familiar with them. I was just completely unaware of most labels used to describe music towards the beginning of my musical journey, but I did find myself having a preference for 60's and 70's rock. I was also fortunate enough to have an amazing radio station that plays SUCH good music. I discovered so much just through that station alone.
As the months went by I actually started gaining quite a bit of knowledge about music, music history, and different ways to discover music too. That's around when I started collecting records and cds. (The first album I ever bought was Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) by David Bowie) And then I finally discovered the term progressive rock.... through the progarchives website. Whenever I looked up information for a band I enjoyed that website would always show up, and I would soon start to see that word very frequently during my band researching. Wow, after all that time I finally found the word to describe what I enjoy listening to!! From there on I just listened to more and more music tbh, and now it's a passion of mine that's kind of taken over my life.
But uhhh yeah, that's my story!!! I don't really expect people to read this but if you made it to the end maybe reblog with your own tale on how you discovered the music you like. I'd love to know!

Prime Time II Thoughts
1. Whitehorn is my theory for the folks on TV, or at least, a rework of him. I've had a feeling he's our Buffalo Minotaur since I heard the name (his bull imagery for the company). There's something there with Whitehorn's official reason for being absent being he has syphilis and the Temple's Gate Cult also having a shit ton of syphilis (obviously later down the line, but still, I feel it might be purposeful that it's the same STD mentioned). Again, much later on in Outlast 2 we meet the big guy and little guy (idk their names sorry) and that picture made me think of them. Maybe twins, maybe siblings or cousins, hell, maybe a couple. The pictures on screen look to be someone with their hair in a bun and then the other is Whitehorn adjacent, at least to me, making me think it's a complete rework of him and then a companion of some kind. As of right now, I think maybe it's Mrs Whitehorn, but that's mainly because I wanna see a real freaky couple in the Trials 👀
2. @alien-atomz brought up that he thinks that they will reuse the Mansion in the tutorial and rebirth for their map. He also noticed that they have the American flag behind them on the TV instead of police lineup height charts, and obviously the broadcasts in the Escape Event would have the national anthem and flag on screen sometimes. Documents point towards Murkoff getting involved in politics, Kennedy specifically. We're officially in 1960 in the Trials timeline, and the next election takes place in 61 - I think a coming ending is a Reagent assassinating JFK.
3. The new categorisation makes me believe even stronger in my theory about Prime Assets sharing Environments going forwards. Would explain Coyle's lines in the files for being in the Docks and Riot (now Suburbs, I assume, especially with the radio broadcasts in that Trial talking about police violence in response to the riots)
4. A lot of diner stuff over the last few months. All of Breach is diner based and then the new outfit, I know Downtown has a diner, but it's so tucked away and dark and not even the core landmark of that environment, and then there's also one in Futterland, but that's only temporary, once you reach the Root Canal, it's unimportant. Several diner-like places show up in the Trials, like that area outside of The Thin Blue Line. Makes me wonder if we're getting a diner as a main landmark for an upcoming Trial, perhaps even the one in Downtown, all lit up properly. Also I LOVE that uniform, need to get it for Roxy, it's SO her 🥰
5. Amelia is still alive, and I heavily doubt she's gonna be a Prime Asset. The Reagents have taken her work and are going to continue it, and the "she" mentioned in one of the new documents (the one about someone having learnt Japanese to talk to Kusamura) CAN'T be Amelia, I'm almost sure of it. I think either Murkoff will put her down, or she'll be helped to escape now that she's in medical and will start up a new riot. But I'm very excited to see what happens next with girlie!!
6. Lot of plant imagery. Kress is obviously a type of like, lettuce, and chemicals are often made of plants. Getting "old lady who likes to garden" imagery from one of the folks on screen, maybe this links to that? Not sure. The ESOP has a tree, obviously family tree shit, but the houseplants are a little different. The pattern on the sweater and pants is weird, thought it was police badges from afar but I have no idea what it's meant to be. Also LOVE the baseball shit, I literally just came up with a baseballer Reagent and now this comes out? My guys are EATING
7. Looking forward to the Cult connections coming up!! I had a thought that the Reagents could literally run straight to Albuquerque since it's only a week long trip away from where I think Sinyala is geographically, so they could potentially get there before dying of dehydration or their injuries. Knoth has been mentioned in the files and now stuff about a Judas Goat, the upside down cross from 2 being in the road map, I'm so happy I was right and the Reagents DO make it to civilisation... Just a shame they run into Knoth in the process.
Still, I can dream that Roxy thinks he's gross and keeps on going and runs away to live in the Canadian wilderness or something 🙂‍↕️

What Taylor Swift Song Describes Your Relationship:
Leo:Sweet Nothing
Tumblr media
"Cause they said the end is coming, everyone's up to something, I find myself running home to your sweet nothings."
Everything was just chaotic in his life. For whatever reason, he was butting heads with his brothers left and right, and now they screwed up yet another mission. He felt like nothing in his life could be calm, at least that's what he thought.
Leo found himself subconsciously making his way to your fire escape. As he stood at your window, he contemplated going in. He didn't want to burden you or down you with his mood, but he found himself just wanting to be with you.
He quietly opened your window and climbed in. Soft music was playing from your radio as you sat on your sofa reading a book. You heard him come in but you were too engrossed in your book to look up. He walked over to you and sat down, closing his eyes.
This is what he needed. No talking, no interaction, just the sound of nothing with you.
Raph: You Are In Love
Tumblr media
"Strange look on his face, pauses, then says, you're my best friend and you knew what it was. He is in love."
Nothing could have ever prepared him for you to come in to his life. He thought at first he was just being silly or that it was just the fact you were a new addition to the group. You made his heart race, his chest tighten whenever you smiled. It was a scary feeling.
For the first time in his life, Raph felt connected to someone on a different level than April or his brothers, even Casey and Vern. He felt strongly about you in a way he never knew he could. When you reciprocated, he nearly cried.
Here you were, 6 months in to the relationship. You were laying on his plastron sound asleep. Raph was wide awake just listening to the sound of your breathing, then it hit him. You were all he ever wanted and more. He can't live without you.
You were his muse, his peace, his companion. He realized right then and there, he was in love.
Donnie:Paper Rings
Tumblr media
"You're the one I want in paper rings, in picture frames, and all my dreams, you're the one I want."
Being cooped up in a sewer your entire life and then having a taste of freedom was exhilarating. It was unlike anything he'd ever imagined. He just never knew that one day out of the clear blue, here you'd come and turn his world upside down.
It was just something that happened between you two when Donnie just popped the question and asked you to be his. It felt right, it felt natural, and it felt good. Never in his life had he been so sure about something before. You clouded his mind day and night. He couldn't stop thinking of you.
A little while in to the relationship, he realized that his future always had you in it. You were always right there by his side, smiling and leaning on him. You were in every part of what he pictured his life to be like once the world settled down. It wouldn't be normal, but he didn't care. He had you, that's what mattered.
He never pictured himself as a husband, but now he did. He'd marry you with a paper ring if he had to.
Mikey: Jump Then Fall
Tumblr media
"I've never been so wrapped up, honey. I like the way you're everything I ever wanted."
He loved everybody. He had a thing for April initially and enjoyed teasing her occasionally. It subsided after awhile, but then one day she brought a friend by and he felt his whole world stop. You were the most beautiful person he'd ever seen.
Mikey was infacuated with you from the start. You two instantly hit it off, like you'd known each other for years. You saw him for him and he saw you for you. He'd never met someone so kind and so wonderful before. It was like a warmth hit him like a ton of bricks. He fell fast and very hard.
He didn't want to scare you off, so he kept his advances somewhat playful. You eventually figured out he was serious and then it developed into more. Everything he had ever dreamed of, it finally did a full circle into this moment.
He held you on a pedestal, like you were an angel. You were all he's ever wanted.

( 12m streams and 12m airplay).
This is insane!!! We are doing so well for Jimin!! I am so proud to stream everyday for him. Let's Keep Going!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
no because this is actually crazy. i dont know how many ppl on here are from the us, but i can tell you, i try my hardest to avoid telling people i listen to kpop. i'm not ashamed but it's just something that makes people look at you differently. i had a pc in my phone case at school once and this guy asked me if it was "one of those bts guys." it was, so i said so and he gave me a look and i shot back with a "you have a problem with that?" and he backed down but i could tell he was a bit off put by it.
the point is, the general public in america doesn't exactly love kpop in the same way that the gp in asian countries do. there's a stereotype surrounding kpop here that they're not as good as western artists, or that kpop is a weird thing to like. the fact that male idols seem more open to more traditionally feminine things (like makeup, etc) really turns people away from kpop. the language barrier also is an issue for most people. you'll either find people that don't care, think kpop is stupid, or kpop fans who like it here.
now, i've actually met people that knew jungkook from seven and liked it, but the difference between seven with its ridiculous amount of promo and jimin's releases is that jungkook's was probably the perfect gp release in the sense that the moment people got bored, it plummeted. surprisingly, i have never heard seven on the radio once, especially in 2024. it was a perfectly simple pop song that got incredibly boring to most people because it was so basic. you could find the exact same song spanning over tons of artists over here.
who and like crazy picked up popularity because they were the perfect mix of gp friendly while still being unique. like crazy picked up on the trend of synthpop that was really big since 2020 and it gathered attention because it was a unique spin on the genre. who was made by the same producer as seven, but it feel so different because it just has that touch of uniqueness that jimin has on songs. he'll take a genre and then mix things up. its the perfect stand out song in an industry of basic song after basic song

hello cutie <3 first, i've been trying to find this ep for you but haven't come up with it yet 🥺 i posted in some request threads and sent some dms, so i'm still holding out hope! if i find it i'll def share it here
as for your question about stage door — yes! completely normal and often encouraged by the comedians themselves! i was just listening to the sam campbell episode of what did you do yesterday?, and he was talking about how happy he is to meet fans after the shows (he even went up to some in a pub? hahaha). i've personally met most comedians after gigs and they're more than happy to not only sign things but even stop for a brief chat; some comedians are pretty famous for this, namely jimmy carr! a few times the comedian has announced the bar they'll be in after the show so people can come hang out hahaha i think the only person i've ever seen or even heard of rejecting a stage door dynamic is james acaster. edinburgh can be somewhat of a mad house for the bigger acts, so i can't guarantee rhod will exit the gig in a way that will allow fans to meet him, but they usually do!
it's really exciting that you're going!!! i would love to though i'm meant to be in venice in october so i may need to wait for 2026 ;; but i hope you have a wonderful time!

hihi anon 💕 the unbelievable truth (coming back soon!!), heresy, the news quiz, and alex horne presents the horne section are my reliable favourites — especiallyyy if one is not up to speed on the style and experience of a british radio show, i think TUB is the best place to start!
basics aside, i have some really random shows on my drive that are there specifically because i enjoy them, including...
women talking about cars — victoria coren mitchell presents an interview series in which famous women look at their lives from the perspective of the cars they have known
two episodes of mash — surrealist sketch comedy by joe wilkinson and diane morgan
in and out of the kitchen — charming little scripted sitcom written and starring miles jupp about the life of a food writer and his husband (comes with accompanying tv adaptation and book!)
cabin pressure — beloved scripted sitcom about an eccentric airline crew, starring john finnemore, stephanie cole, roger allam and benedict cumberbatch
i've also uploaded a few new series that you guys may find interesting; these aren't on the masterpost (yet? i'm struggling for room) but i'll link them here!
james acaster's findings — james presents in-depth research on a variety of subjects
josie long's all the planet's wonders — an edinburgh show josie adapted to radio in which she consults proper reference books to learn more about our planet, astronomy, and more (you can find tons of josie's radio work free on her site!)
janey godley: the c bomb — a radio adaptation of janey's standup show looking back on her unusual life in the midst of battling late-stage cancer
hope that's fun for now! i could come up w so many more recs so if these don't work for you or you're looking for something more specific (genre, comedian, etc) lmk!
Tumblr media
hmm idk has anyone? her books seem kind of inspirational and motivational in nature, so those usually don't have as big of an audience here as some other genres of even autobiographical stuff
Tumblr media
you're my marek larwood anon i just know it hehe
i'm sorry so far of these requests i've only uploaded fast and loose ;; i'm really keeping my eye out for these and definitely asking around, but this one is a particularly deep cut! fingers crossed x

I've been trying to listen to Christmas music at work, and by that I mean I've been livestreaming a radio station on my phone.
Here in Ireland we have Christmas FM, a seasonal charity radio station that plays only Christmas music, which seems like a basic enough concept that it probably exists everywhere around the world.
Anyway, my problem is that I've been struggling not to turn it off every time an annoying song comes on.
And the most annoying one right now is something no-one will have heard of.
Every year they hold a "write your own Christmas song" competition. And when a winner is chosen, they play it in their rotation for the rest of Christmas.
Thing is, these are usually amateur singers with amateur songwriters and limited production capabilities. Even under the best of circumstances, something truly great would be fairly rare, right?
But this is not the best of circumstances, this is a Christmas Song they're writing.
I've heard people say that writing a Christmas Song is easy money. And I think that's bullshit.
Having a good Christmas Song is easy money.
But I've seen plenty of quality, successful musicians with Christmas Songs that have failed to catch on. Clearly, writing a Christmas Song is a harder task than writing a Regular Song.
Probably why so many people go down the Cover route. Having a good song to begin with eliminates most the difficulty.
So, you've got amateur singers with amateur songwriters and limited production, attempting a task that professional singers with professional songwriters and tons of production regularly fail at.
Results end up "okay" at best.
This year's winner added a further element of difficulty, which probably helped them win the vote but did nothing for the quality:
It's sung by a group of children.
Now don't get me wrong, Christmas Songs sung by a group of children is a Christmas tradition. And the beauty of group singing is that enough people singing the same thing at the same time means it covers up any individual faults.
But the effect works better live than recorded.
So. We have a group of lightly-trained children singing a song in an incredibly difficult genre by an amateur songwriter, with limited ability to fix these things with instrumentation or post-production.
I really can't stop my hand from hitting the off button fast enough.

1990s Indie Rock Playlist
Fucking finally! A 90s indie rock playlist for Spotify! I've had a YouTube version of this one for a few years now—and that one is both significantly better and longer—but now you all have *something* that's a whole lot more easily accessible too 👍.
Now, it's not really easy to describe what exactly makes an indie rock song an indie rock song in the first place, but you tend to know it when you hear it; and with this first iteration of a Spotify version of this playlist, we start with a total of 11 songs that run from shoegazey, noisy fuzz to smoother and more melodic power pop-leaning college rock stuff. And we've got a couple very brief explorations of specific scenes here too, with a few tunes from mid-90s Australia and then a handful from late 90s Philadelphia.
Plus, most of these are pretty dang obscure as well, with most selections having play counts somewhere in the low single-thousands; but we kick off with a total, unmissable classic: "Ginger" by Washington, D.C.'s Lilys, a song and band that I first discovered in the most unlikeliest of ways as a completely random bonus track on a retrospective 80s synthpop and new wave comp that celebrated beloved Bay Area radio DJ Steve Masters 😂. This killer 1993 tune is by far this playlist's most popular one, currently sitting at over 377K plays.
This playlist is ordered as chronologically as possible.
Lilys - "Ginger" Even - "Stupid Dream" Flanders - "Shameless" Challenger 7 - "Wait a Lifetime" Transient Waves - "Wavelength" Sunbirds - "Rocket" Line - "Hollow" Photon Band - "Here Comes Some Changes" Intro to India - "The World Is Waiting" Lenola - "Sids" The Asteroid No. 4 - "Tricks of the Trade"
But as I mentioned up top, there's a whole lot more great stuff on the YouTube version of this playlist, which contains more than double the amount of songs that are on the Spotify one, and thus I think really cements its own status as being a genuinely indie playlist, because you can't find most of it on any of the streaming platforms!
With this superior version, we've got tunes from the early 90s, including a much less known version of Brian Jonestown Massacre's "Evergreen," and a great, slow, and heavy one called "Salvation" by Los Angeles' Sacred Miracle Cave. Then we head up to Canada for a bunch of tunes from the Sonic Unyon label, including a few tracks by Treble Charger (aka NC17), whose "Red" has been rated by many as one of the single-greatest Canadian alt rock tunes of the entire decade. And there's a music video in this Canadian section too, for a spacey gem by SIANspheric called "I Like the Ride." 🚀🤘
youtube
Then after that, we head down to the mid-90s Philly scene, with the deeply underheard "Calling All Cars" by Slumber, which only has 77 plays, and The Asteroid No. 4's "Car Thief Millenia," which only has 95 plays. And then to close out, we have a couple tunes from Cali label Devil in the Woods, with the catchy, keyboard-assisted "Dirt Bike Rider" by Snowmen, and a rare, live performance of "Snowball" by Modesto's Fiver.
The Charlottes - "Could There Ever Be" Sacred Miracle Cave - "Salvation" Spot 1019 - "HHH" The Brian Jonestown Massacre - "Evergreen Treble Charger - "Red" NC17 - "Cubicle" Sponge - "Colourful Hat" Eric's Trip - "Evie" By Divine Right - "Out of It" SIANspheric - "I Like the Ride" Treble Charger - "Even Grable" The Asteroid No. 4 - "Car Thief Millenia" Slumber - "Calling All Cars" Snowmen - "Dirt Bike Rider" Fiver - "Snowball"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
Now, you've probably never heard of almost any of these bands before, but I promise you that there is a metric ton of gold in this collection of songs. Go and hop in your '94 Taurus and cruise the highway with this thing; you will not regret it.
Spotify playlist is 11 songs and runs for 53 minutes, but the YouTube one is 26 songs and runs for 118 minutes. So if you want more of this terrific indie shit, you know which of these options to choose.
Next week we'll be taking an eclectic trip out to late 90s San Francisco.
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!
