路面清掃活動「清掃という名の発掘」/ Excavation Called Cleaning
4月4日、赤穂市の交通公園の路面清掃活動は、最も土砂の堆積が多いエリアに入っていて、清掃と称した ”発掘” 作業になっています。でも、犬の散歩で公園を訪れた男性から「ずいぶん綺麗になりましたね」と言われて、とても嬉しかったです。 On April 4th, the road cleaning activity at the Traffic Park in Akō City entered the area with the highest accumulation of sediment, turning the cleaning into an "excavation" work. However, when a man visiting the park with his dog said, "It's gotten quite clean," I was very happy.

赤穂市では、この交通公園が作られて以来、大雨による大規模な浸水被害が何度か報告されていて、その際に公園のコース上に土砂が堆積していった結果で、厚さ18㎝ 以上に砂や小石などが地層状に重なって堆積してます。
Since the construction of this traffic park in Ako City, several reports of large-scale flooding damage due to heavy rain have been made, resulting in sediment accumulation on the park's course, with layers of sand and small stones piled up to a thickness of over 18 cm.

路面清掃を始めた当初は、まさかこんなに堆積しているとは想像していなくて、簡単に清掃できると考えていました。自然の力は強大です。しかし、小さな人間の力でも、根気よく続けていけば、多くの人が安心して利用できる公園になるのは間違いありま��ん。 When we first started street cleaning, we never imagined there would be such a buildup. The power of nature is immense. However, with even a small human effort, if we persistently continue, there is no doubt that it will become a park that many people can use with peace of mind.

現在、清掃を行なっているエリアは、横を流れている川の下流側になる場所のため、他の場所よりも最も土砂が堆積しやすい場所になっているのでしょう。まだまだ、発掘作業、路面清掃作業が必要です。 The area currently being cleaned is likely the place downstream of the river flowing next to it, which makes it the most prone to sediment accumulation compared to other locations.

春の交通安全運転週間までにはこのエリアの清掃を完了したかったのですが、焦らずに、無理をせずに、丁寧な作業を続けていきます。 次回の清掃目標は、このエリアの路面をさらに綺麗にする事です。 I wanted to complete the cleaning of this area sooner, but I will continue to work carefully without rushing or overdoing it. The next cleaning goal is to make the surface of this area even cleaner.

Kirby Planet Robobot Translation Comparison: Pause Screens (Part 2)
This will be a comparison of the original Japanese version and the US English localized version.
Specifically, this will cover the pause screen descriptions of all bosses faced exclusively in the extra modes of the game.
While I’m mainly comparing the US English version to the Japanese one, I’ll bring up differences in the EU English version that I find notable, too.
For the comparisons, the usual points apply:
Bolded is the original Japanese text, for the reference.
Bolded and italicized is my translation.
Italicized is the official NOA translation.
A (number) indicates that I have a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.
As you read this, please keep in mind that with translations like these, it’s important not to focus on the exact literal wordings, since there is no single “correct answer” when it comes to translations.
Rather than that, consider the actual information that is being conveyed, in which way, and why.

This part will work the same as the last one.
And since a lot of these pause descriptions are somewhat connected to their counterparts of the main story as well, I would recommend reading the previous part first, if you haven’t already.
Also, as a general note, you’ll see that all the stronger versions of the regular bosses have the prefix “Re:” added in the Japanese version.
This was changed to “2.0″ in the English version.
From what I’ve seen, “Re:” in Japanese pop culture is often used as a cool, sometimes futuristic way to refer to a “renewal” of something, so adapting it as “2.0″ makes sense.

Clanky Woods 2.0
Clanky Woods has been redesigned and upgraded. Better fuel efficiency and fewer emissions demonstrate the company's new environmentally friendly initiative. It costs only half of the previous model!

Comparisons & Thoughts:
The description has been slightly shortened as usual, though there are some potential errors or changes, too.

In the English version, the text mentions “the company’s new environmentally friendly initiative”, whereas the Japanese version doesn’t make it sound like this would be a new thing for them.
It’s possible that this was a mistranslation, but it could also be that they intentionally changed it in English to be a little more obvious about the irony - because the Haltmann Works Company allegedly trying to be environmentally friendly is ridiculous.

Also, in the Japanese version, the original wording makes it more clear that Clanky Woods’ price being reduced is seemingly referring to the cost a potential buyer would have to pay for it, rather than the cost of producing it.
This feels like it might be alluding to how in real life, manufacturers of electric cars or the like will try to cut down their prices to some degree in order to get more people into them, and thus creating more of a demand for them in the future.
The English version could be going for that as well, but it’s a bit less clear.

Re:ホログラフ防衛システムズ
マザーコンピューターにより リニューアル された この 防衛システムも、他の星に ねむっていた せっけい図を もとにして 作られた ものだが、一部 データが かけている ため、 本来の せい能を はっきできずに いるらしい。

Revised by the Mother Computer, this defense system was also created based on blueprints discovered on another planet. But, because part of the data is missing, it is apparently unable to demonstrate its original performance. (1)

Redesigned by the Mother Computer, this defense system is based on a blueprint found on another planet. It's missing a segment of data and is unable to demonstrate its full potential.
Translation Note:
What I translated as “original performance” here could also be translated as “true performance” or the like. I don’t think the specifics make much of a difference here, but thought I would note it, just in case.

Comparisons & Thoughts:
This description is mostly the same, but there is an interesting detail about it.

The Japanese version notes that this defense system was “also” based on blueprints found on another planet.
This directly implies other things have been based on such blueprints, but it doesn’t specify which those are, nor how many blueprints and planets are involved.
From its looks though, we can gather that the Holo Defense API was likely based on Pix from Rock Star, as seen in Kirby 64.
Similarly, we can assume that the Security Force mid-boss was likely based on Metal General from Halcandra, as seen in Return to Dream Land.
And of course, Star Dream is heavily implied to be something similar to Galactic Nova from Milky Way Wishes - and both of them are implied to be so-called clockwork stars, also first mentioned in Return to Dream Land.
But even considering all that, keep in mind that we still can’t say for sure where and when the Haltmann Works Company would have precured any of their respective blueprints, and series director Shinya Kumazaki intentionally left the answer up in the air when asked about it during the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon on Miiverse.
Just so we are all on the same page here.
In any case, the English version is still missing the indication that the Holo Defense API isn’t the only one that was based on blueprints found elsewhere.
The EU English version actually goes one step further, rephrasing the line in question to say that the defence system was built “based on the blueprint found on another planet”.
The wording of “the blueprint” would imply there was only ever one, which does not appear to be the case in Japanese.

This description features some slight alterations.

The Japanese version mentions that a larger variety of attack patterns is being discovered, while the English version says that “more vicious attacks” have been found.
Aside from those being different things to discover, the Japanese version also makes it clear that this analysis is still being done continuously.
The Japanese version also states that the system’s revision has “unlocked” these additional patterns, but the English version states that it has “implemented” the additional attacks.
So, the implications of how the system works are slightly different here.

The US English version also has this description start with “They further analyzed the data of the cloud monster and discovered (...)“, while the EU English version phrases it as “Further analysis of data from the cloud monster has uncovered (...)“.
The latter matches the Japanese version a bit more, with the narrator having a more neutral position regarding the progress.
But, the former isn’t really wrong by comparison either, and the narrator does refer to the company in third person like that occasionally in other places.

These monsters were created by Susie entering data she acquired from her travels. Where and when did she encounter the original monsters from another dimension? Who knows?

This description is mostly the same, with some slight oddities.

Of course, the term “another dimension” used in the Japanese version here is the same as before, so my notes on the regular Holo-Doomers also apply here.
And just like before, the EU English version changed “another dimension” to “extra dimension”, which I also went over back there.

Also, the Japanese version specifically uses the word “area” to refer to another dimension, which is also the term used for “areas” in Planet Robobot as a game.
I think this could just be to add some flavor to this description, though.
The game seems to use “area” in favor of “level” to give it a more mechanical and business-driven vibe. And so the narration is consistent with that internal logic of the game’s aesthetic.

The final line in the Japanese version says that there is no end to the mysteries about Susie “either”, which I think is simply a follow-up to the final line of the regular Holo-Doomers description.
The English version doesn’t have a connection between the two descriptions like that there.

This description is mostly the same, except for a small detail that might be a bit confusing, but I’ll try to explain it.

There is some potential issue here regarding the usage of plural versus singular.
In my translation of the Japanese version, I have the description refer to dragons in a general sense, rather than one individual dragon.
The English version chose to use singular instead, for the most part.
As I mentioned before, there usually is no clear distinction between plural and singular in Japanese, so either way could work here.
That being said, the English version would still be slightly off, because if one chooses to use singular for the translation here, it has to be applied to all of the text.
If I were to apply singular for my own translation, it would become this:
This hologram was created from the data of an ancient organic life form called a dragon, which has existed in the past, but it is also possible that it secretly continues to live on, deep inside a cave on an island somewhere.
Therefore, the English version’s line “Dragons are no longer seen, but one of them (...)” would be inaccurate for that approach.
It should at least be something like “This dragon is no longer seen, but it (...)” instead.
At the end of the day, I don’t think the specifics actually matter much in this case right here, but I still wanted to explain them.

It is said that the People of the Sky who enshrined this monster still exist. It seems that the mechanization invasion has not reached them, due to their remote location.
Comparisons & Thoughts:
There are some slight alterations in this description.

Like before, “land of the sky” is changed to “People of the Sky”, so my notes on that also apply here.

The Japanese version has the narrator note that the supposed land of the sky apparently does exist, but the English version has the narrator say that the People of the Sky “still” exist.
The latter would imply that from the perspective of our vague narrator, the People of the Sky were known, but also previously thought to possibly not exist anymore.
In contrast, the former implies the land of the sky is only just being discovered.

Next, the Japanese version notes that there are still many “uncivilized areas” on Pop Star, following the prior statement that the land of the sky has yet to be reached by the invasion.
The English version changes this to stating that the People of the Sky have yet to be reached by the invasion “due to their remote location”.
This might have been an intentional change to sound less demeaning, but I can’t say for sure.
Really, this mostly changes the narrator’s attitude about the situation, since the Japanese phrasing still would imply that the company just needs more time to reach Floralia and other locations further away from their operations.
Also just for the reference, the word “areas” is once again the same one they use for the game’s main levels as well, keeping with the game’s aesthetic.

As an aside, the general narrator of these descriptions is not really a character, so slight differences in their limited knowledge and attitude about the world like in the two previous points are not that big of a deal.
But it’s interesting to me that in this description right here for example, the Japanese version of the narrator seems to roughly reflect the knowledge and attitude that the Haltmann Works Company would have.
In other places, the narrator’s knowledge and general perspective does shift to other sides too, I’m guessing to fit the mood that works best for each description.

Also, I mentioned in the last part how it’s strange that the English version didn’t just go for the shorter “Holo-Rattler” as the name, and this choice comes back to haunt them here, cause they had to spell “Holo-Coily Rattler 2.0″ as “Holo-C. Rattler 2.0″ to make it fit.

As a young child, she was supposedly involved in an accident during an experimental start-up of the Mother Computer, and went missing. (1) Whatever she may be thinking, some time later she must have snuck her way into the company once more. Her full name is "Susanna Familia Haltmann".
Susie 2.0
As a child, Sue [sic] was involved in an accident during a Mother Computer experiment and went missing. Why has she joined the company after all this time? Her full name is Susanna Patrya Haltmann.
Translation Note:
What I translated as “experimental start-up” could also be translated as “start-up experiment”, or the like.

Comparisons & Thoughts:
In the Japanese version, Susie’s middle name is “Familia”, which was changed to “Patrya” in the English version.
The Japanese one is probably based on the English word “family” or maybe even “familiar”, alluding to the story going on with her, and keeping with that Western influence they go for with her and the company.
I’m guessing the English version changed it because “Familia” might’ve seemed too on the nose about it?
Going by that, I think “Patrya” might be based on something like “patriarch” and related terms, which would also allude to the story surrounding Susie’s character.
The actual description is mostly the same, just rephrased to be shorter.

In the Japanese version it’s stated that the experiment during which Susie went missing was one about starting the Mother Computer, which ends up omitted in English.
Not hugely important, but interesting if you care about finer specifics of the story.

The Japanese version also mentions that Susie later “snuck her way” into the company, implying some obfuscation of details on her part when she joined.
That detail can already be inferred from the story alone, so not as much of a loss.

The US English version refers to Susie as “Sue” in this description for some reason.
I’m almost positive this was just a typo, since it seems very unlikely they would randomly introduce a second nickname for her only in this one screen.
The EU English version rephrased the first line slightly and fixed that spelling in the process, too.

This mass-production model is based on an upgraded Mecha Knight model. If this model goes into commercial production, the company's military power will dramatically increase.
Comparisons & Thoughts:
The ”Enhanced Mass-produced Meta Knight Borg“ had its name changed to “Stock Mecha Knight“, because yeah, there was probably no way to make a more literal translation fit here.
I think going for “Stock” here is pretty clever, boiling down the idea to its bare essentials, and with such little space, too.
The actual description is mostly the same, just rephrased to be slightly shorter.

The English version’s phrasing does make it sound like Stock Mecha Knight was based on Mecha Knight+ in particular, whereas the Japanese version has it be based on the data of the regular Mecha Knight.

There is a pretty significant alteration or possible error in this description.

In the Japanese version, it’s stated that the company has given up on cloning Dedede’s “heart” because several prototypes ended up being imperfect soldiers.
What this means is that cloning his “heart” is actually possible for them to some extent, but since that causes the clones to take on parts of Dedede’s personality, it made them worse as soldiers.
So, they have given up on cloning the heart specifically because the clones having one has proven to be a detriment for their purposes.
In the English version, it’s instead stated that the company is unable to clone Dedede’s “soul”, because “some things can’t be cloned”.
In turn, the issues with the trial models are also implied to be unrelated general cloning issues.
So, while the Japanese version somewhat eerily states that cloning a heart is possible, but the company is now making the clones heartless on purpose, the English version seems like almost the complete opposite and states that cloning a soul is just not possible.
This could have been a translation error, but it could also be that the English localizers wanted to avoid crossing a certain line here and thus changed it intentionally.

Continuing from the previous point though, you may have noticed that the Japanese version uses “heart” while the English version uses “soul”.
The actual Japanese word used here is 心/kokoro, which is most commonly translated as “heart”, but it can also be translated as “soul” like the English version did - and also as “mind”, or even “feelings”, as well as other things like that depending on the context.
Because of that, it can have different connotations than just the English word “soul” on its own.
I think “heart” is a broad enough term that it works well here, and the Kirby series has a frequent heart motif as well, so I went with that, personally.
The term will also be brought up again in future descriptions down the line, so keep it in mind for later.

Still, since the Japanese version has the room for it, it’s fun to see it continue with the trend of comedically focusing how much everything costs compared to one another, going with the themes of the game.

Also, Haltmann’s own mech is revealed to be called “Presidenver” in Japanese, which was changed to “Executive Suit” in English.
Either one goes along with the name of Susie’s mech, but since its name was omitted in the English version, this fact doesn’t come across there.
“Presidenver” is pretty self-explanatory, just adding “president” to “Rereinver”.
“Executive Suit” might be a play on “executive suite”, which is pretty amusing to me.

In Japanese, Haltmann’s given and middle names are “Gains Income”, which was changed to “Max Profitt” in the English version.
“Gains Income” is obviously taken directly from “gains income”. Aside from probably referring to the fact that he’s about earning money, this also is another English-sounding name to go with the company’s aesthetic.
“Max Profitt” is a similar play on earning money, but done in a way that works better as a pun-based name for English-speaking audiences.
The actual description has one fairly notable omission in particular.

In the Japanese version, it’s specifically stated that Haltmann has been “casting aside his heart and even his memories“, which is not mentioned in English.
The fact that Haltmann doesn’t have all his memories anymore is crucial to understanding the story at this point, so leaving this out caused a lot of confusion for English-speaking fans around the time of the game’s release.
It would eventually be brought up again during the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon, so fans did get to learn about this, but it was still an inconvenience.
Not to mention that Miiverse has since been shut down.
The detail about Haltmann’s “heart” is interesting as well, since it gives additional insight into how Haltmann has presumably grown more callous over the years as well, rather than starting out the way we see him in the present day.
For the reference, the English Miiverse post adapted this as “compassion”, which works perfectly fine in this context, too.

The actual description has a few potential errors or changes.

The relevant line could either be referring to Dark Matter Blade’s true form, which the clone does take on during the battle, but it could also be referring to the other general mysteries about Dark Matter and its background.
Either way could work in this context, so I went with “true nature” in my translation, because you can read either interpretation into it.

First of all, the Japanese version is once again written from the perspective of Star Dream, as seen by its unmistakable speaking style.
However, unlike in the main story, Star Dream does not refer to itself in first-person here at any point.
Since the Soul OS battle seems to roughly follow after the events of Meta Knightmare Returns, this might reflect how Star Dream presumably never gained its own sense of self in that scenario, but that’s just a guess on my part.
Either way, in the English version this description does not seem to be written directly from Star Dream’s perspective.
If this is the case, it might have been an oversight, but I can’t say for sure.
I do think this is a shame, because it’s a nice callback to its final pause screen from the main story, and also may become more impactful once you see the remaining pause screens from this current boss battle.

A smaller detail, but the Japanese version specifies that the final program was unlocked by “Unknown DAMAGE”, which may refer to the cut done by Galacta Knight - as it can still be seen on Star Dream here.
This gives this boss battle a stronger connection to the events of Meta Knightmare Returns, even if the continuity of these extra mode stories is rather vague, of course.

This next detail will take a bit longer to go over, so bear with me.
In the English version, it’s stated that Star Dream has yet to purge “a small part” of Haltmann’s “soul”, and that this could be detrimental for it.
But in the Japanese version, Star Dream instead comes to the conclusion that Haltmann’s “HEART” will be innecessary. It also proceeds with the erasure of the “MEMORY” of Haltmann, which the English version does not yet bring up.
This results in some different potential implications here.
In the English version, the usage of “soul” would suggest that this must be Haltmann’s actual soul or spirit, but it’s not quite the same in Japanese.
While these extra stories only have vague continuity, keep in mind that as far as we know, Haltmann was never actually taken over directly by Star Dream in this scenario.
If this was meant to refer to Haltmann’s spirit, they could’ve easily used the same word for spirit they used during the final battle of the main story.
But instead, they use the same term “heart” that has already come up before in the descriptions for Dedede Clone 2.0 and Haltmann 2.0, which this current description also seems to follow up on.
Just like in the Dedede Clone 2.0 description, a heart is deemed as a flaw by Star Dream here. And we know from the Haltmann 2.0 description that Haltmann has been casting aside his own heart too, in a way.
This goes into speculation territory, but one could assume based on this that the “heart” of Haltmann which Star Dream currently possesses is the same heart that Haltmann has cast aside, either literally or figuratively.
Again, remember how the Dedede Clone 2.0 description confirmed that a heart is something that can artificially be reproduced in some form, so it wouldn’t have to literally be the same.
In any case, Star Dream’s method to rid itself of this “heart” is to start erasing the “MEMORY” of Haltmann.
This could mean that at the very least, the memories that Haltmann has lost over the years are stored or documented within Star Dream in some form.
Though not from the pause screen, further evidence of this is the fact that the objects summoned by Star Dream during its respective third phase are officially called “MEMORIES”.
And while they are all parts of Galactic Nova, they also all relate to specific details about Haltmann that were revealed in a Nintendo Dream interview (June 2016 issue.)
The Soul OS version of the attack also adds piano keys, a possible reference to Susie’s own profile mentioning that she plays the piano.

Now, in both versions, this pause screen appears to be from Haltmann’s perspective, though the English version actually added quotation marks to it.
This could have been to make it more clear that this is from a specific person’s perspective, but the same was never done with Star Dream’s narration.
There could be another reason for this, which I’ll go over next.

Here’s a subtle detail you might not have caught.
While this is most likely Haltmann narrating here, the Japanese version has him refer to himself with the first person pronoun わたし/watashi.
In the actual story, he only ever used ワシ/washi to refer to himself.
But here’s the thing: in fiction, having a character refer to themselves as ワシ/washi is generally used to indicate that the character is old, and just by comparison, わたし/watashi sounds younger.
This could imply that this quote might in fact be from a time where Haltmann was at least somewhat younger than he is now.
In other words, a memory from the past, rather than a current thought in the present.
Being shown a memory of Haltmann at this point would also fit with Star Dream’s narration from the previous pause screen.
Because of that, I think the English version could be using the quotation marks to indicate this temporal distance, since they can’t really show it in the same way the Japanese version does.
But I can’t say for sure if that was the intent.

The Japanese version has Haltmann mention that he did not know who made the machine he’s talking about here, which is most likely Star Dream.
Interesting backstory tidbit there, if you’re curious about these.

Also in the Japanese version, Haltmann believes that a machine can’t actually make dreams come true in general. Though, we can’t know if he is correct about that.
In the English version, Haltmann only comes to the conclusion that no machine could make his specific dream come true.

On that note, Haltmann is never shown to recall what his dream was in the first place in Japanese, he only says that he must have had one.
In the English version, he explicitly remembers wanting to see “her” again being his dream.
It seems like almost a given that Haltmann’s dream here is referring to his wish of being reunited with his daughter, so it makes sense that the English version would change the text to make it obvious.
There is a non-zero chance that Haltmann actually had another dream, but that’s a whole different topic.

This is the final description, so of course there is a lot to say again.

A minor detail, but in the Japanese version it’s said that the memory of Haltmann has now disappeared from “this core”, which is pretty straightforward, all things considered.
For some reason, the US English version instead says that Haltmann’s memories have been deleted “from the OS”, and the EU English version says they have been deleted “from the Mother Computer”.
This is also the first time the memories are brought up in English at all, so their relevance is a lot less clear.
And another minor detail related to this one.
I believe the specific phrasing of “disappeared from this core, too” in Japanese is meant to refer to the fact that Haltmann’s memories had already been lost by the man himself.
At least, that makes the most sense to me.

Once again, the English version uses “soul” where the Japanese version used “heart”.
The distinction between the two becomes especially important here, because while the English version says it’s the “soul” of Haltmann, the Japanese text is more vague about it.
Of course, the first Japanese pause screen of this battle did refer to it as the “heart” of Haltmann, but at the same time, remember that this would have basically been Star Dream’s own heart as well.
This also seems to be the implication going by the lines that follow afterwards.

Interestingly, the Japanese version describes Star Dream as having been a “perfect being”, whereas the English version just goes for “near-perfect being”.
This is very similar to how they changed Kirby’s energy from being described as “infinite” to “nearly infinite” in the main story.
I suppose they just don’t want to deal in absolutes with these.
The English version also goes on to describe Star Dream as now being a “cold, mindless machine”, instead of just a “broken machine” like in Japanese, which has different implications.
Star Dream being actually broken and not functioning as it should is another point that Kumazaki reiterated during the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon, so that’s another plot detail the English version technically omits here.
The English phrasing also leans more into the idea of Star Dream being a scary opponent, while the Japanese phrasing leans more into the idea of Star Dream being something pitiful - a similar sentiment to the descriptions of the main story’s final battle.

Adding to the point above, the English version also omits the final part of this last description.
The phrase “It doesn’t have dreams, it doesn’t even eat lunch“ references a recurring concept first introduced in the manual of Kirby’s Adventure - the fact that the people of Dream Land, and Kirby especially, love to take naps after lunch to have fun dreams.
This was referenced in the Japanese version of Kirby Super Star as well, where the pause screen description during the Starship segment of Milky Way Wishes features the line:
マルクのやぼうを さっさとくいとめ、 ゴハンたべて ねよう。
Let's stop Marx real quick, then have lunch and a nap.
That’s another Milky Way Wishes connection only in the Japanese version, but said line also wasn’t featured in the English version of Kirby Super Star in the first place.
And since the “Kirby of the Stars” title is also not really used in the English localizations of the Kirby series, it would have been hard to make this final bit of the pause description work, even if space weren’t an issue.
I think the Japanese version is stronger for having it, but there probably wasn’t much the English version could have done about this.

With all of the point-by-point comparisons out of the way here, I want to take a moment to go into some general thoughts on this battle as a whole and what each version implies about it.
Naturally this will have a bit more speculation on my part too, so keep that in mind.
If you only look at the English version, the implication you get is that during the Star Dream Soul OS battle, Star Dream is fused with Haltmann’s actual soul, in a similar manner to the events of the main story. (Even though those events may not have happened in the extra scenarios.)
It must be Haltmann’s own soul, because the English Dedede Clone 2.0 description states that a soul cannot be cloned.
Star Dream then proceeds to delete Haltmann’s last memories as well as his soul, because Haltmann’s soul had a chance of stopping its plan. (Even though it had no apparent issues about fusing with his spirit in the main story.)
Therefore, during this battle Haltmann is essentially killed “deader than dead” by Star Dream, for the lack of a better wording - his very soul eradicated for good.
The middle pause screen during the battle may be thought of as Haltmann’s final thoughts before ultimate oblivion in this interpretation.
I don’t think this is just what I myself take away from the English version, because this is the most common interpretation I have seen from English-speaking fans over the years.
It can come across as a tragedy in which Haltmann is finally destroyed for good by a terrible machine he could never truly control.
Now, onto the Japanese version.
The exact details leave more room for speculation, because of how vague the term 心/kokoro or “heart” can be.
But the way I understand it is that Star Dream has been storing the memories that Haltmann has been losing over the years.
In addition to that, it would likely have data on Haltmann’s current memories and thoughts as well, as seen in the main story.
From this, it gained the “heart” of Haltmann, or at least a partial reproduction of it, allowing it to feel and think in a way similar to Haltmann. Just like the early Dedede clones with cloned hearts acting similar to King Dedede in various ways.
However, Star Dream never fuses with Haltmann’s spirit in the extra scenarios.
Because of that, it never gains its own sense of self, and fails to understand the purpose of a heart, deeming it a potential flaw to be purged, just as it did with the updated Dedede clones.
Thus, it deletes the memories of Haltmann, which brought about the heart in the first place, and thus loses said heart again, becoming a lifeless object once more - no longer able to think and feel anything.
And there is another subtle detail in the Japanese version related to that, too.
During this battle, the first description is narrated by Star Dream, the second seems to show a memory of Haltmann, and the final one goes back to the general narrator.
This could possibly represent the transition of Star Dream starting out with that heart, sifting through the memories to delete them, and finally having become just a machine again, so it no longer has any thoughts that could serve as the narration.
This potentially paints the Soul OS battle specifically more as a tragedy of Star Dream itself. A machine that achieved the miracle of being alive with a heart, but proceeded to undo said miracle all on its own, without even realizing what it was really doing.
Also, Kumazaki only specified this on Miiverse, but Haltmann losing his memories from overusing Star Dream was also because it was broken.
So this was never something that was supposed to really happen in this way, had it functioned properly.
Overall, Star Dream can feel like more of a tragic figure in the Japanese version, and more of a villainous figure in the English one.
Several small differences between the versions across the game reflect this, with moments painting Start Dream as pitiful or even pathetic being altered or omitted.
However, this is a very general summary of it, the Japanese version still has Star Dream being the main antagonist, and the English version has plenty of moments where the tragic aspects to Star Dream are still apparent.

Final Thoughts on the Pause Screens:
First, let me say, I am very impressed by the English localization of these pause screens.
Really, look up these screens for yourself some time, they pushed these to their limits. Almost every single one of them is crammed full with as much text as they could possibly fit in.
Yes, they still had to cut a lot out here and there, but clearly not from lack of trying.
Of course, the fact of the matter still ends up being that the Japanese version simply has more good stuff in it.
A lot of stuff is “expendable”, but losing fun fluff all the time adds up, I feel.
The extra modes pause screens especially also feature a few major errors or alterations, as well as omissions that do end up being detrimental to the story in some form.
The biggest one I feel is the fact that Haltmann’s memory loss is not brought up at all, because that one detail is the puzzle piece that makes everything fall into place and let’s the player finally understand what is going on with the emotional core of the story.
So much of the details regarding Star Dream are up to interpretation, so I’m perfectly willing to let the broader details be, but the Japanese version still does a better job of dropping small details earlier on that become relevant for it at the end.
And it’s not just Star Dream, the Japanese version overall has more of these smaller connections and continuity across the pause screens, and connections to the actual story contents as well. So they feel more like smaller pieces in a carefully crafted whole, where everything is interconnected and enriches the story.
Again, the English version probably couldn’t have done much different here, due to the difficult conditions translators and localizers usually have to work with - lack of context, lack of time, limited space, etc.
I guess what I am getting at is that I do prefer the Japanese version, and would recommend fans to check it out (though if you are reading this, I suppose you already have), but don’t assume this means I have a disdain for English version.
It’s very well done, considering the circumstances.

Natural History Museum (Museum/Gallery #6)

先日、ロンドン自然史博物館へ行ってきました。まずは入場前、建築に圧倒されます。ここは宮殿かって感じです。さて、少し並んで中へ。
入ってすぐ思ったのは、「あ、ナイトミュージアムに似てる」。中に入ると、大きなクジラの化石が目に入り、それから周りを見渡すと、ものすごく古い動物の化石や標本があります。
博物館の中も建築が本当にかっこよくて、そして広々としていて、歴史を感じる建物です。ブルーゾーン、レッドゾーン、グリーンゾーン、オレンジゾーン、という名前でエリアが分かれていて、恐竜や哺乳類、海洋生物、鳥類、また地球科学など広くカバーをしていて、館内もものすごく広いです。
今回は始めのホールと恐竜の展示エリアしか見ていませんが、それでもかなり時間は使いましたし、十分楽しいです。私がよく見る絵画メインの美術館とは大きく異なり、こちらはかなり体験施設のような雰囲気を強く感じます。タイムスリップした感覚で「没入感」を味わえます。楽しいです。笑
他に見ていないエリアがありますし、また絶対にきます。私は個人的に地球科学のエリアが楽しみです。

The other day, I visited the Natural History Museum. Before entering, I was overwhelmed by the architecture. It looks like a palace. After a bit of lining up, we could get in.
As soon as I got inside, I thought, "Oh, it's just like the movie Night at the Museum.” In the first hall, the first room inside, I saw a large whale fossil, and then I looked around and saw very old animal fossils and specimens.
The architecture is really cool inside as well, and the building is spacious and historic. The museum is divided into Blue Zone, Red Zone, Green Zone, and Orange Zone, covering a wide range of topics such as dinosaurs, mammals, marine life, birds, and earth science.
This time I only visited the first hall and the dinosaur area, but still, I spent a lot of time there and it was fun enough. This museum is very different from the art museums I often visit that mainly focus on paintings, and I felt that this museum is more like an experience facility. You can feel like you've gone back in time and have an "immersive" experience. It IS FUN.
There are other areas that I haven't seen and I will definitely come back. I'm personally looking forward especially to the Earth Science area.

彼の生まれた場所である「▅▅▅tale」は
クリエイターが制作途中で飽きて放置されたAU。
本来どんなAUになる予定だったのかは黒で
塗りつぶされている為分からない。
Sansのデザインだけは完成していた為、
彼は動くことが出来たが、その他は未完成なので
中途半端にエリアがあったり
命は無く、形だけある未完成のモンスターが
佇んでいるだけの世界。
ポツンと看板が立っていて
黒塗りされている為、ほぼ読めないが
「▅▅▅tale」と書いてある。
彼は未完成で放置されても
いつか完成させてくれるだろうと待っていたが、
どんなに待とうとも完成する気配が無い。
長い時間の中で狂っていく最中、
自分が完成させればいいんだと思いつき
線画を描いた。
そして色塗り、と言う時
どうしても色が付かず困り果てた。
他の世界から色を取り、自分の世界に
つけようと考えた。

仮止めとして看板に世界の名前が書かれているの
だが、黒色で塗りつぶされているので「▅▅▅tale」としか読めない。
後々、defective Sansが 赤文字で
“defective tale”と名付けた。
defective taleにいるモンスターは
器だけある状態で命は無い。
長い時間の中で狂っていく最中、
自分が完成させればいいんだと線画を描いた。
そして色塗り、と言う時
どうしても色が付かず困り果てた。
他の世界から色を取り、自分の世界に
つけようと考えた。

【概要】
defective taleに登場するSans。
世界は何もかも中途半端で不完全だったが、
唯一Sansのデザインは完成していた為
動けている。
彼は自分の世界を再創造、
世界に色を付けるためにAUに行っている。
彼は少し狂っていてまともな判断力がしにくく、
利己的なのだが寂しがり屋の一面も。
なぞなぞが好きだったり、
意外に頭を使うことが好き。
自分の世界に色を付けるために、色を奪う。
色は専用ボトルに保存される。
recreative Sansは元々
achromatic という名前だった。
自分の世界を再創造する為に
色を集めている。
ソウルの色はウィスタリア。日本で言う藤色
AUを巡っている最中で片目が砂嵐に
なってしまった。その際に片目の視力は失われた。
その副作用みたいなもので、
たまにブルースクリーンを吐く。
描いたものを具現化できるペンを
所持している。
幸せな世界線のAUを見ると
住人の心を壊したいという衝動に駆られる。
目の色は様々なものに変化し、たまに文字が出る時も。

・ブラスター
ドロドロとした物がへばりついているが
あれは決意と魔法が混じり、別の何かへと
変化したもの。
ビームの色はランダム。

自分が見聞きした過去にあった出来事を、
その時の光景を映像と音声と共に再生できる。
・テレポート&ポータル
他のAUに行くことが出来る。
テレポートの際に立っていた場所に、数分だけ
落書きのような灰色の足跡が残る。
ポータルは破れた紙の様なデザイン。
・骨攻撃
ウィスタリア色の尖った骨を使って
攻撃や身を守る時に使う。

ペンで絵を描くと、落書き程度に具現化できる。
生き物を描いたとしても命を吹き込めるわけでは
無いので器だけができる。
一定時間、時間が経過したり
4回攻撃を受けると消えてしまう。

色がついているキャラクターなら人間であろうと、モンスターであろうと奪うことが出来る。
色が奪われた身体の部分は、
何処であろうと機能しなくなり白くなる。
奪った色は、元に戻す事で動くようになる。

出来る。魔法で出来ているので最初のうちは
とても強度等あるが、
素材が紙なので長時間経つと粘着が弱まり取れる

決意と魔法が混合し黒くなったもの。
人型が崩れたのような形からモンスターの形が
現れる。それを自由に操れるが
その分魔力が多く消費され直ぐに疲れ、
意識が飛びかけるので最終手段

Making All Things Equal 2019 個展「Making All Things Equal / The Sleepwalkers」展示風景 ART FRONT GALLERY、東京 木板に油彩、アンティークフレーム、木、家具、日用品、蝶ほか 撮影: 加藤健 「Making All Things Equal」とは、荘子の斉物論から引用した言葉である。荘子は斉物論の中で、自身が夢の中で蝶となり、夢と現実を行き来した経験を語っている。 このインスタレーションは「内側の世界」と「外側の世界」を反転させた構造になっている。本来「外側」にあたるであろう、路面に面したエリアは内装が施され、洋室の様相を呈している。一方、インスタレーションの「内側」は剥き出しの建材で構成されており、「部屋の外側=構造上見えない『狭間』の部分」の世界が表現されている。多���設置された窓は時折外からノックされ、外の世界(または現実や他者)の存在を示唆する。 インスタレーション内には様々な家具が配置され、それぞれの場所にあるライトが点いたり消えたりする。鑑賞者はそのライトの明滅に誘導され、夢さながらに強制的な場面転換を経験する。家具は重力方向を無視し、壁や天井など様々な向きに設置されており、鑑賞者は「場面転換」により視点の向きも変えることになる。また、眠る女性の絵のほか、「夢」に由来した絵画も飾られている。それぞれ、「ユング夢分析に於ける『大きい夢』」「砂男」「ヤコブの梯子」「ウロボロス」をモチーフにしている。 インスタレーション内には蝶の死骸と共に生きた蝶も多数放たれており、静かに動いている。本展覧会は1、2月開催だったが、本来蝶の居ない真冬の時期に、鑑賞者は生死の曖昧な蝶と共に作品内を歩き回る。 閉じられた空間の中で、「夢と現実」「内側と外側」「生と死」−−、相反する事象の境界線は曖昧になり、等価になっていく。 Making All Things Equal 2019 Solo Show "Making All Things Equal / The Sleepwalkers", Installation View ART FRONT GALLERY, Tokyo Oil painting on board, antique frame, tree, furniture, everyday items, butterflies, etc. Photo: Ken Kato "Making All Things Equal" is a term taken from Zhuangzi's "Discussion on Making All Things Equal." In this wrinting, Zhuangzi describes the experience of becoming a butterfly in a dream and going back and forth between dream and reality. This installation has a structure in which "the inner world" and "the outer world" are reversed. The area facing the road surface, which would originally be "the outer world", is fully decorated with Western style. On the other hand, the "inside" of the installation is composed of bare building materials, and it expresses the space of "the back side of a room” i.e “the part of the in-between space that can not be seen structurally". And the attached windows are sometimes knocked out, suggesting the existence of the outer world (or reality or others). Various pieces of furniture are placed in the installation, and the lights at each location turn on and off randomly. The viewer is forced to experience scene changes as if dreaming, by guiding by the flickering of the lights. Furniture ignores the direction of gravity, and is installed in various directions such as on walls and on ceilings, so that the viewer changes the direction of the viewpoint by "scene changes". Also, paintings referred to notions/stories of “dream” are displayed in the installtion, along with a painting of a sleeping woman. The motifs of the paintings are as follows: "Big Dream" in Jungian Dream Analysis, "Sandman", "Jacob's Ladder" and "Uroboros". In the installation, many living butterflies are also released and move quietly, right next to dead butterflies. This exhibition was held in January and February, but in the winter season when no butterfly is nomally present, the viewer roams the installation with butterflies that have blurred boundary between life and death. "Dream and reality", "inside and outside", "life and death"−−, the boundaries of conflicting matters become ambiguous and equal in this installation.

In many ways, modern society is working against our ability to help customers complete complex tasks. Distractions abound. Companies fight for attention through notifications, flashing graphics, sounds, automatically playing videos, and so on. Kirby Planet Robobot Translation Comparison: Pause Screens (Part 1)
This will be a comparison of the original Japanese version and the US English localized version.
Specifically, this will cover the pause screen descriptions of all bosses faced during the main story of the game.
While I’m mainly comparing the US English version to the Japanese one, I’ll bring up differences in the EU English version that I find notable, too.
For the comparisons, the usual points apply:
Bolded is the original Japanese text, for the reference.
Bolded and italicized is my translation.
Italicized is the official NOA translation.
A (number) indicates that I have a specific comment to make on that part in the translation notes.
As you read this, please keep in mind that with translations like these, it’s important not to focus on the exact literal wordings, since there is no single “correct answer” when it comes to translations.
Rather than that, consider the actual information that is being conveyed, in which way, and why.

To start off, I will use a slightly different format for the pause screen descriptions than the one I used for the cutscenes.
I’m going through each description individually, listing the respective translation notes, notable differences, as well as some of my own thoughts.
Naturally, some of the pause screens will end up having far longer notes from me than others, though.
This also seems like a good opportunity to talk about names that have been changed between versions, whenever those come up.
Some general changes you will typically see with these pause screen descriptions include the text being rewritten to be shorter, omitting some information that isn’t quite necessary. The kind of details that can provide some neat flavor, but you can also afford cutting if needed.
And such text cuts have to be made with the pause descriptions in this game because the space on the screen is quite limited, I’m sure.
If you take a look at the pause screens in-game, you will find that even with the shortened text, the English ones are close to filling out the entire text space that’s available.
With that, onto the descriptions themselves.

Gigavolt retains its name in the English version, but its title “Iron Giant Soldier” is omitted, most likely due to limited screen space.
The actual description is mostly the same.

ウィスピーボーグ
この星に 住む、ウィスピーウッズ とよばれる 植物が 改ぞうされた すがた。 ドリルの足により自由に 走り回ることが できる他、巨大なネジを かどう させる とてつもないパワーも 手に入れた。
Whispy Borg
The remodeled form of a plant called Whispy Woods, which resides on this planet. Aside from its drills functioning as legs, enabling it to move about freely, it has also obtained tremendous power, allowing it to operate gigantic screws.

Whispy Woods has been mechanized and modified to run around freely using drills as legs. It's also been outfitted with a giant, powerful screw.

Comparisons & Thoughts:
“Whispy Borg” is renamed to “Clanky Woods”, maybe to avoid potential copyright issues with Star Trek?
But it could easily just be that they thought it sounded better.
In the English localizations of Kirby games, the Whispy Woods variants are usually named “(something) Woods”, whereas in Japanese, both “(something) Woods” and “Whispy (something)” are used at times.

Clanky Woods’ description itself has been rewritten to be slightly shorter, like omitting the mention that Whispy Woods is a plant who lives on Pop Star, for example.
That detail adds some atmosphere to the narration style, and can help first-time players understand who Whispy is, but it’s expendable compared to other information here.

It seems like a small error slipped in when the description was rewritten.
In the original Japanese version, it’s said that Clanky Woods is now powerful enough to operate gigantic screws, while the English version mistakenly says that he has been outfitted with an actual giant screw.
When you see his boss battle, it’s clear Clanky Woods doesn’t have a screw directly on him, but as usual it’s likely the localizers had to work with just the text itself, no additional context.

N'Gyuar Base

A geared-up base made of gigantic cogs defends this route. Batteries turn along with the gear movement to aim at targets. Unless this base is destroyed, there is no way forward.

The “N'Gyuar Base“ has been renamed to “C.O.G.S.”
This is a clever bit of localization, I think, because “N’Gyuar” appears to be an intentionally strange-sounding corruption of the word “gear”.
So, the English name follows a similar idea, while probably sounding a bit better to an English-speaking audience.
The actual description is essentially the same.

The “Holographic Defense Systems“ have been renamed to “Holo Defense API”.
This was probably done for space again, and to sound a bit more natural.
But, I don’t know enough about programming to be able to tell if “API” is an accurate term to use for this boss.
The actual description only features some slight rephrasing.

In the Japanese version, there is a different distinction between the actual machine and the holograms it creates, making it more clear that the machine itself is not holographic.

エナジースフィアという 球体が 好物な、 異空間に すくう モンスターの ホログラフ。 もとは、赤色と青色の こたい であった もよう。 このモンスター自体よりも、スフィアの持つ 異しつな テクノロジーの方が ナゾが多い。
Holo-Lopers
Holograms of monsters that are nested in another dimension, (1) and love to consume orbs called Energy Spheres. It appears that originally, there were both red and blue specimens. Far more mysterious than the monsters themselves is the alien (2) technology that the spheres possess.
Holo-Doomers
A hologram of monsters nested in another dimension. The original Doomers were red and blue. They love to eat energy spheres, which contain an ancient technology.
Translation Notes:
What I translated as “another dimension” here is the same 異空間/Ikūkan term I mentioned in the previous part.
Note that the word I translated as “alien” here doesn’t specifically mean “alien” in the sense of “extraterrestrial”, but rather in the sense of “different”, “foreign”, and the like.

Comparisons & Thoughts:
The “Holo-Lopers” are renamed to “Holo-Doomers” in English.
Of course, this is because the actual “Sphere Doomers” from Return to Dream Land were originally called “Sphere Lopers” in Japanese.
Keep in mind though that the etymology of their Japanese name isn’t clear, so romanizations may vary.

As mentioned in the translation notes above, this pause screen brings up the 異空間/Ikūkan term, which I’ve gone over a bit in the previous part.
Because of the reasons I mentioned there, I chose to translate it as “another dimension”.
But, I left it uncapitalized here, because the Japanese text uses the Japanese reading for it in this case, rather than the English reading like in Star Allies.
Interestingly, while the US English version translated this term in the same way, the EU English version actually translated it as “an extra dimension” instead.
This is similar to how the English versions adapted “Another Dimension Road” as “Extra-dimensional road” in Meta Knightmare Returns.
Just like that time, I believe this was also an attempt to have a reference to Return to Dream Land in some form, since the original Japanese term was first used in the Japanese version of that game.
By now “another dimension” seems to be the term the English versions have settled on as well, so these “extra dimension” phrasings feel like early localization oddities in hindsight.

Also, it’s a small detail, but the technology of the spheres is called “alien” in Japanese, but that’s changed to “ancient” in English.

In the English version, Ice Dragon is described as a “spectral dragon”, but the Japanese phrasing would translate closer to something like “fantasy creature” in this context.
Because, of course, dragons are generally considered mythical creatures from fantasy stories.

The English version’s phrasing also implies that fire-breathing dragons are the most common ones, as you might expect, but the Japanese version only mentions that those also happen to exist.
Ironically, so far there are no fire-type variants of the Ice Dragon enemy in the series.

The hologram of the icon enshrined by the People of the Sky. Its weak spot is the data on its head. It was only a snake puppet filled with powerful energy, but it used to be worshipped as a deity.

“Holo-Garāga“ is renamed to “Holo-Coily Rattler“ in English.
Naturally, they’re both named after the actual “Coily Rattler” from Triple Deluxe, which was called “Togu Ro Garāga” in Japanese.
For some reason, the English version includes the full name of the real thing, when they could have easily shortened it to “Holo-Rattler”?
Speaking of its name, in Japanese, the “Holo-” part goes well with the original name’s “Togu Ro” part, so I wonder if maybe Coily Rattler was picked as a holo-boss in order to make that pun?
That would be funny.

In the Japanese version, the description says that the Coily Rattler was enshrined in a “land of the sky”, which refers to Floralia, but without actually naming it.
The English version is more specific, clarifying that it was enshrined by the People of the Sky.
That’s technically true, so no real problem with that - but I do think the Japanese version was being intentionally vague here, since the pause screen “narrator” doesn’t seem to be an omniscient narrator.

Secretary to the president of the "Haltmann Works Company", an interstellar enterprise. (1) While she is a secretary, she is also an elite-worker in command of the current invasion project. She fights while operating the "Rereinver", an Invader Armor reserved for executives. (2)

Executive assistant to the president of the Haltmann Works Company. While her job title is "secretary," she is the stakeholder of the ongoing invasion project.
Translation Notes:
The term I adapted as “interstellar enterprise” would more literally translate to “universe enterprise”. But since this is supposed to mean “an enterprise active across the universe”, I adapted it the way I did.
The etymology of the “Rereinver” isn’t clear, so this romanization is just my guess.

Comparisons & Thoughts:
Just like for the dialogue boxes, “Secretary Susie” is shortened to just “Susie” in English.

In Japanese, Susie’s full job title is 社長秘書/shachōhisho which can be translated as “secretary to the president” as I did, or “executive assistant” as the English version usually does.
But, in this pause screen they kinda double it up and call her “executive assistant to the president”.
The part “while her job title is secretary” also ends up making slightly less sense in English, since she hasn’t actually been called a “secretary” in English here.

In the Japanese version, Susie is said to be in command of the current invasion project, which the US English version changed to calling her a “stakeholder” of it, which is something different.
This is something the EU English version fixed, saying “she leads the ongoing invasion project”.

The English version omits the description of Susie’s mech.
Just for the reference, while it doesn’t come up here, the “Rereinver” was renamed to “Business Suit” in English.
Because they removed the mention of its name here, the English name was actually only first revealed in the second Planet Robobot Ask-a-thon on Miiverse, as far as I can tell.
The details about her mech are arguably expendable in the description here, but this specific machine is occasionally described as being adored by Susie, and has gone on to accompany her in future titles as well.
So, the fact that it continues to be somewhat important makes me feel it would have been nice if the English version had included its formal introduction and name in the game itself.

Regarding the name change of Susie’s mech, like I mentioned above, the etymology of “Rereinver” isn’t clear, but I’ve seen different speculations that it might be derived from words like “screwdriver”, “remember”, and the like.
In any case, it’s definitely a name that “sounds” English in Japanese, so that goes along with the Western vibe that the Haltmann Works Company is supposed to have.
The name “Business Suit” might be adapting this idea in some form, by giving it a stronger connection to the company’s M.O. of treating their horrific invasion like mundane business ventures.
In that sense, I think it’s pretty neat, but it might be a bit too generic for what is also Susie’s own personal battle mech that she still uses today.

The English version’s phrasing of “the Kabula” seems a bit strange.
The Japanese version uses the phrasing あの カブーラー/ano Kabula, which can roughly translate to “that Kabula” - but it seems more like that one was used since Kabula hadn’t had an appearance in years at that point.
The general feeling of that whole line is supposed to be expressing surprise that Kabula has shown up, after all.
Perhaps the English version’s phrasing would work better if you were to emphasize it as “THE Kabula” instead?

Meta Knight Borg is renamed to Mecha Knight, probably for the same reason as Whispy Borg.
“Mecha Knight” also just ends up sounding more sleek in English.

The English version doesn’t mention the Dedede Clones’ desire to battle with Kirby, but the fact that these clones have seemingly inherited those feelings from Dedede was already established in the cutscene before the battle.
So that’s not a huge omission.

Like with the original Gigavolt, the subtitle “Iron Giant Soldier” was likely removed for space.

The Japanese version goes into more detail about the Gigavolt II, explaining that it’s specifically used for the 2nd phases of invasions, which is a nice story tidbit, and also adds some urgency, since it implies that said 2nd phase has now been reached.
It’s a bit of a shame that this isn’t in the English version, but it was probably too hard to make it fit the screen.

The company’s own currency is called “Haltmoney” in Japanese, which was renamed to “Haltmanns” in English.
Personally, I love the sound of “Haltmoney” and I wish they would have kept it, but maybe it was considered too goofy?

In case you don’t know, “8,6 billion” is actually the same amount as “8,600 million”, so the price wasn’t changed between versions.
I don’t know if there are any rules over which you should use for prices, I just thought “billion” sounded nicer?

Comparisons & Thoughts:
I already went over it in a previous part, but in Japanese, the improved Mecha Knight Borg has the suffix 改/kai added to its name. I chose to adapt it as “Mark II”, but using “+” like the official localization did works just as well.
So I don’t really consider that “+” detail a name change per se.
“Meta Knight Borg” is again changed to “Mecha Knight”, of course.

The actual description is shortened more than usual, but most of the omitted details were not all too important, either.
The cutscene before the battle covered a great deal of them, after all.

The Japanese version ends with the question of whether there is any way left to make Meta Knight “come back to his senses”, which seems to foreshadow that Kirby breaking his mask ends up doing the trick.
The US English version adapts this as “restore him to his former glory” for some reason, either by mistake or to sound nicer, I presume.
In any case, the EU English version went and changed it to “restore him to his old self”, which is closer to the Japanese.

This pause description features lyrics from the company’s theme song, and like I mentioned in a previous part, there are some issues with the English version here.
In the Japanese version of the game, Susie sings the first verse of the song during her second appearance, and then the next verse during her third appearance.
Now, this pause screen shows us the complete first strophe for the first time.
And finally, the music video one unlocks by getting 100% completion shows the full first strophe - as well as a previously unseen second strophe.
So, one ends up gradually uncovering more parts of the song over the course of the game.
In the English version, the lyrics shown in this pause screen do match up with the lyrics used in the music video, but it’s not the complete first strophe, only the first half. Probably due to space.
The problem is, these lyrics don’t exactly match the lyrics Susie sings during the story cutscenes.
To make things worse, the lyrics Susie sings during the story cutscenes seem to go with the melody better than the alternate lyrics from this pause screen and the eventual music video.
So the whole song and it’s slow unveiling end up being potentially confusing and less focused in English.

There are also some differences between the contents of the lyrics themselves in each version, even when you consider that lyrics can’t be translated directly in the first place.
In the context of just this pause description, one detail that sticks out to me is the line “o galactic Father” from the Japanese version.
The whole song is basically worshipping Haltmann, so that line is probably symbolic rather than literal, but it’s also likely meant as foreshadowing for the upcoming story revelations.
Thus the English version ends up lacking that clue.

In the Japanese version, it’s specifically mentioned that Star Dream has fused with Haltmann’s “spirit”.
This is a minor detail right now, but will come up again in the next phase.

The idea of Star Dream now having a sense of self comes up in both versions, but the Japanese version reinforces this point again by saying that it has “personally” made a decision.
The implication is still there in English, but I like the extra emphasis in Japanese, to kinda let the weight of it settle.

Lastly, just a small thing, but the Japanese version calls Star Dream the “greatest computer in the universe”, while the English version calls it the “most advanced computer in the galaxy”.
Both are probably hyperbole either way, but the Japanese one is consistent with how Haltmann referred to Star Dream just earlier in the game, whereas the English one is not.

First of all, the “Access Ark” is called “Acciss Arcs” in Japanese, as you can see.
This name was probably just altered to work better in English.

Similar to the previous one, the description itself is fairly close.
But there’s a difference I find pretty notable, even if it’s small.

In the Japanese version, it’s stated that “Haltmann’s spirit is now gradually fading away”, which is a follow-up to the previous phase mentioning that Star Dream had fused with his spirit.
The line still leaves room for interpretation, but the wording of “fading away”, in combination with saying that Star Dream is a “pitiful machine that has lost its master” makes me think that this is not referring to Haltmann’s spirit being drawn in further by Star Dream, but rather that his spirit is slipping away from Star Dream.
I think this would also go along with the title of the track that plays during this phase, which is “Intermezzo Without a Leader”.
But that’s just the impression I get - the main line in question is still vague enough that you could read it either way, of course.
In the English version, it’s stated that “Haltmann’s mind is being absorbed by Star Dream”, which leaves no room for interpretation other than, well, Haltmann’s mind being absorbed by Star Dream.
In this version, this line also comes without any prior set-up in the previous phase.

More of a minor detail, but while the Japanese version calls Star Dream “pitiful”, the English version does not.
The Japanese version also features another dramatic drop of Kirby’s full “Kirby of the Stars” title, which the English version lacks, as usual.
That’s a detail they can’t really get around in English, nothing to be done about that.

It’s a bit hard for me to describe, but looking at both this and the previous phase, I think the English version has less of a flow between the phases of this boss battle.
In Japanese, it’s kinda like the boss battle itself is a series of more story developments, with the situation escalating further as it goes on.
Haltmann essentially being out of the picture completely by the time of the second phase, regardless of the specifics, has more of an impact in Japanese because of the details surrounding it, like the set-up from the first phase.
And the final line of the second pause screen expressing pity for Star Dream in Japanese just adds a little bit more to it, in my opinion.

This last description has some minor alterations, plus one possible error, but is close otherwise.

In both versions, this description is narrated in-character by Star Dream itself, which is a nice detail.
In the Japanese version, Star Dream’s speaking style is unmistakable, so it’s more obvious right away, but the English version manages to make it clear that it’s Star Dream speaking, too.
I’ve gone over Star Dream’s manner of speaking before, and what I said there still applies here, for the most part.
Star Dream’s speaking style in English ends up being a bit less distinct sounding once it drops the robot noises, but what can you do.

In the Japanese version, Star Dream specifically says “THAT I HAVE created“ in regards to the Invader Armor.
First, the usage of “I” here also clarifies that the Invader Armor was in fact designed by Star Dream alone, it seems - if that’s a detail you’re interested in.
Also, Star Dream referring to itself in first person there once again emphasizes the fact that it has a sense of self.
Notably, it refers to itself in first person one more time during its final line.
Both of those instances are phrased differently in English to not be first person.
You can see it as a small thing, but considering Star Dream’s whole thing is being a self-aware machine, I think it’s not unimportant.
Plus, you may recall that the Star Dream from the events of Meta Knightmare Returns never referred to itself in first person like that, so there’s some contrast between the different stories.

In the English version, Star Dream calls Kirby’s power “astounding”, which might be a translation error, because in Japanese, Star Dream calls it “a threat”.
The exact wording in Japanese is キョウイ/kyōi, which could be interpreted as both 驚異/kyōi (”marvel”) or 脅威/kyōi (”threat”).
The English version seems to have gone for the former, but Star Dream’s final line makes it clear it’s supposed to be the latter.
Also, the English version has Star Dream call Kirby’s power “nigh” infinite, whereas in Japanese it just flat out calls it infinite.

And lastly, in the Japanese version, Star Dream does not finish its final line, seemingly showing some hesitation, confusion, or perhaps even fear as it calculates the probability.
The English version goes for a different approach, with Star Dream vaguely concluding: “It doesn’t look good“.
It’s a bit dry, but in a way where you can still imagine for yourself how Star Dream may or may not be feeling.
Either approach works with how Star Dream has both machine-like and person-like aspects, I think.

British Museum (Museum/Gallery #2)

(English follows Japanese)
今回は、大英博物館へ。
一言でいうと、でかい。広すぎて、なのにコレクションはすごく貴重なもの(だと私は少なくとも思っている)で溢れていて、もちろん1日では見終われない。これまでに何度も訪れてはいますが、まだまだ見ていないエリアはたくさんあるし、正直、館内図もそこまで頭に入ってはいないです笑
当館の発表しているFact Sheet によると、約80000点が展示されていて(これでも驚きだが)、それは全コレクションのたった1%だという。びっくり。コレクションの多くが、保存の観点から常設展示をすることはできないらしいです。
そんな膨大なコレクションの中でも、最も有名なうちの1つはロゼッタストーンでしょう。ヒエログリフの解読という点で、エジプト学の発展に大きく貢献し、歴史的にもすごく重要な展示品です。ロゼッタストーンに限らず、この古代エジプトの展示室には、今から3〜4000年前という遥か昔の美術品が多く展示されていて、「数千年前に人類が作ったものが、今自分の目の前にある」という事実だけで鳥肌が立ちます。(#1で書いたように、「素直に」見ると、体がそう感じます。)
ただ、他国のもの(特に戦利品)を大々的に展示することにディベートが起きているのも事実で、それも理解はしています。歴史的に超重要な遺産を素晴らしい環境で多くの人が鑑賞ができるという声もあれば、グローバル化した現代社会で、まだ戦時の”古い”体制を推すように感じられる姿勢に反対の人もいるでしょう。美術品の展示ひとつ取ってみても異なった視点があるわけで、様々なことにおいて多様な視点から考えてみるというのは意識をしていきたいと思います。(この議論については、大英博物館に限ったことでは全くなく、世界のどの場所でも起きていることで、双方の意見をまずは知ることが大事かと。)
とにかく、大きすぎる大英博物館を、じっくりと時間をかけながらこれから見ていこうと思います!

#2 is... British Museum!
Simply put, it is HUGE. It's too big, and yet the collection is full of very valuable things (at least I think so), and of course you can't finish it in one day. I've been to the museum many times so far, but there are still many areas I haven't seen yet, and to be honest, I don't know the museum map that well.
According to the Fact Sheet published by the museum, there are about 80,000 items on display (which is still amazing), which is only 1% of the entire collection. Many of them cannot be put on permanent display because of its vulnerability to light.
Among such a huge collection, the Rosetta Stone is probably one of the most famous objects in this museum. In terms of deciphering hieroglyphs, the Rosetta Stone has contributed greatly to the development of Egyptology, and it is a historically very important object. Not only the Rosetta Stone, but also many other artifacts from as far back as 3-4000 years ago are displayed in the Ancient Egypt exhibition room, and just the fact that I see something that was created by humans thousands of years ago in front of me now gives me goosebumps. (As I wrote in #1, my body feels this way by "honest" viewing.)
However, it is also true that there is a debate about items from other countries (especially spoils of war), and I understand that. Some people feel that it is a great way to allow many people to appreciate historically important heritage in a wonderful environment, but at the same time, others are opposed to an attitude that seems to promote the "old" system of wartime in today's globalized society. There are different perspectives on even a single exhibition of art, and I think it is important to be aware of the need to consider a variety of perspectives on various matters. (This debate is not limited to the British Museum at all, it is happening everywhere in the world, and I think it is important to know the opinions of both sides first.)
Anyway, I'm going to take my time and see around this huge museum.

{:en}As we travelled through Nagoya in a taxi – the previous night at Hop Buds had been a bit heavy – the scenery changed from one of hustle and bustle, to one of industrial. Sprawling factories in the northern part of Nagoya, dotted along the banks of The Shin River – another man-made part of the area. All of the factories appeared to be the same, with their typical dull grey exteriors, and a few signs posted above the doors so you know where you are. However, one building stood out from the rest, with its colourful, vibrant door to the warehouse.
Y Market Brewing opened this brewery in November 2018 as the demand for Y Market’s beers had outstripped the production capability at their brewpub in the Yanagibashi Market. From the outside, the brewery appears to be brand new – its sparkling, gleaming exterior looks out of place with the much older factories and warehouses in the area.
As you enter through the multicoloured door – you are treated to what appears to be the canning room. Except it isn’t. Every nook and cranny in the brewery serves a purpose. In the entrance area appears to be pallets of blank cans – 3000 or so on each pallet, all for the sole purpose of canning some of the beers brewed here. Unlike the brewpub branch, this brewery both cans and kegs the beers made here. Right in front of you is another shutter. But it’s not for entering the brewery – it’s where all the malts are kept. Nagoya’s weather ranges throughout the year – sunny to snowy, 40c to -10c at its extreme – so all the malts are kept in a climate controlled environment.
Y Market Brewing import their malts through one of Japan’s biggest malt distributors – Ohnishi Shoji – who supply malts from around the world, with countries such as Germany, The UK, and the US represented. These malts can also be bought in online homebrewing shops too which means the homebrewer can use the same materials that are used in Y Market Brewing’s beers. Forklifts are used to access the grains; however, they are still carried to the milling station, and sliced open by hand to ensure no metallic parts or dust enters the milling area.
While Y Market Brewing are more famous for their IPAs and pale ales, from time to time, they do make darker beers. With up to 60 bags of malt being used for each batch of beer, it can get time consuming to clean the milling machine, so Y Market go with milling the darker malts first – think chocolate, black, roasted barley, then the caramel or crystal malts, before moving onto the paler base malts such as two-row or Maris Otter. The milling machine is connected right to the mash tun via an overhead conveyor belt; however, some of the non-malt products, such as oats or rye, get milled in a separate machine. Wheat is a notorious difficult grain to mill – it can produce lots of flour and make the mash gummy, so this gets milled away from the malts and then transported up via a conveyor belt.
As you walk into the main brewhouse area, the space is immense. While Y Market have utilised the space efficiently, there is still a lot of room left for future expansion – something that is not a case of “if” but “when”. As you walk past the fermenters, looking overhead, pipes run above you – hot water, cleaning, wort – all going somewhere before ducking down behind stainless steel containers.
The brewing area is an impressive setup. Four huge tuns sit on top of a platform at the far end of the brewery, overlooking the fermenters and water tanks that stretch down the middle and the side of the brew house. The tuns are all computer controlled – in English as Kachi-san prefers it that way – though they are operated by hand and have the specific details such as mash temperature, chosen by the brewers. Unlike other breweries in Japan, Y Market Brewing also have a four stage hoprocket – the largest at the time of writing in Japan – connected to the system to impart more hop flavour than just boiling the hops normally.
Nakanishi-san mentioned it would be possible to do a double brew, possibly even a triple brew, on the current system if there were a demand for it. A brew from start to finish usually takes around 6 hours. That’s thanks to the two huge water tanks that collect water from the city. While that sounds unusually compared to other breweries that use underground aquifers or wells – something that sake in Japan is famous for emblazing on the bottle labels – the reason for this is that the city water is carbon filtered and then have its profile changed to suit the kind of beer being made.
The two huge water tanks contain both hot water for the mash, known as the HLT, and also for sparging, while the cold water tank contains water for cooling. This cooling stage occurs once the wort has passed through the whirlpool tank – one of the biggest we’ve come across on our travels for BeerTengoku. This huge tun is used to impart MORE hop flavours and aromas once the beer has begun to cool down as the boiling wort causes some of the more delicate oils to be evaporated off. Once the wort is brought into the whirlpool tun, it spins around the centre and then hops are added – this spinning effect is called the “Tea Cup Effect” and was first summarised by Albert Einstein – who’d have thought Einstein would have influenced how a beer is hopped? Then the wort is allowed to stand for an additional 20 minutes or so to allow the hops and trub to form a compact trub/hop pile in the center of the vessel. The wort is easily separated from the pile by pumping it out of an outlet located on the side of the vessel.
The wort is then pumped into one of the nine 3600 litre fermentation vessels that lie in the middle of the brewhouse. Each one of these is glycol chilled and all were full up when we visited. Some were of the Y Market Brewing regular line up, some were collaboration beers, while some were special beers for the Spring Keyaki Beer Festival. There is no in-house set yeast either – each batch of beer is brewed using liquid yeast from Wyeast that is specially imported over for each beer. Moreover, the meticulous nature of both Kachi-san and Nakanishi-san means when the yeast is about to be added, the whole packet is washed all over to ensure that no infections or wild spores are on the packets. This also extends to the cutting tools – be it a pocket knife, pair of scissors, or a much larger knife – everything gets meticulously washed.
Once the beer is deemed to be finished, it then moves onto one of the three BBT – known as bright beer tanks. These tanks are used to carbonate a beer before it moves onto either kegging, bottling, or in Y Market Brewing’s case – canning. ⅓ of every batch of beer is canned at this location, while the remaining is kegged for sales either in the taproom, the Y Market bar, or for bars across Japan. The canning machine itself is mostly automated and it is able to can 1300 350ml cans per hour, though think of the poor person who has to load the canning machine.
Once the beers are canned, washed, dried, they are then x-rayed to ensure that no metallic parts are inside the beers and also to ensure that the level of beer inside is the same for all the beers. If the beer is off at all, it is immediately discarded from shipping. When asked what happens to the beer, in the hope of a few “samples”, Nakanishi-san laughed it off and said the beer would not be for consumption. Random samples from each batch are tested to ensure they meet the rigorous standards and then the labels are applied.
The original plan was to use heat-shrink labels on the cans; however, the cans were being crushed when the film was being heated on the empty cans. Of course, heating the cans once they have beer inside is also not desirable so Y Market Brewing decided to go with the simplistic, but effective, single stripe down the middle. The beers are then stored in a giant walk-in fridge, that also stores the hops from Yakima Valley Chief, before the beers are shipped off for sale.
Perhaps the most important stop on the tour is the taproom, open primarily at weekends, where you can get some fresh beer from the bright tanks, or even some cans to takeaway. All of the Y Market Brewing staff drink there – it’s next door to their offices – and you can often walk up to meet and chat with them. ワイマーケットブルーイングは、そのビールへの需要が柳橋市場の彼らのブルーパブでの生産能力を上回っていたため、2018年11月にこの醸造所をオープンした。外からは、その醸造所は真新しく見え、その輝かしい外観は、そのエリアの遥かに古い工場や倉庫とは一線を画している。
色とりどりのドアを入っていくと、キャニングルームのようなところに入る。しかし、そうではない。醸造所の隅々が目的を果たしているのだ。エントランス付近では、空き缶がパレット積みされている。各パレットに3000個程度あり、ここで醸造されたビールの一部をキャニングすることのみを目的としている。ブルーパブとは違い、この醸造所では、作られたビールを缶詰めと樽詰めの両方をここで行っている。すぐ目の前には、もう一つのシャッターがあるが、醸造所に入るためではなく、そこにすべてのモルトが保管されているのである。名古屋の気候は、晴れから雪、極端な場合は40℃から-10℃と、年間を通して変化する。すべてのモルトは温度管理された環境に保管されている。
ワイマーケットブルーイングは、ドイツ、イギリス、アメリカなどの国を代表して世界中からモルトを供給する日本最大のモルト販売業者の1つである大西商事を通じてモルトを輸入している。これらのモルトはオンラインの自家醸造ショップでも購入できる。これは自家醸造者が、ワイマーケットブルーイングのビールで使われているのと同じ材料を使うことができることを意味している。フォークリフトは穀物を取るために使用されるが、それらはミリングステーションに運ばれ、金属部分や粉塵がミリングエリアに入らないように手で切り開かれる。
ワイマーケットブルーイングはIPAとペールエールで有名だが、時には濃いビールを作っている。ビールのバッチごとに最大60袋のモルトが使用されることで、ミリングマシンの洗浄に時間がかかるので、ワイマーケットはまず濃いモルトから製粉する。チョコレート、黒、ローストした大麦、次にキャラメルまたはクリスタルモルトを考慮して、ツーローまたはマリスオッターなどの淡いベースモルトに移っていく。ミリングマシンは、オーバーヘッドコンベアベルトを介してマッシュタンに直接接続される。ただし、オート麦やライ麦などの非麦芽製品の一部は、別の機械で製粉される。小麦は製粉するのが難しいことで有名な穀物。小麦粉を大量に生産し、マッシュをグミにすることができるため、これはモルトから製粉され、コンベヤーベルトで運ばれる。
メインの醸造エリアに入ると、スペースが広い。ワイマーケットは空間を有効活用してきたので、将来の拡張に向けて、まだたくさんの空き部屋がある。それは「もしも」の備えではなく、来るべく「その時」のために。発酵槽を過ぎると、パイプ(温水、クリーニング、麦汁)が頭上を走っており、すべてがステンレスの容器の後ろに落ちる前に、どこかへ運ばれる。
醸造エリアは印象的な仕組みである。醸造所の遠端にあるプラットフォームの上部に4つの巨大な樽があり、醸造所の中央と側面に広がる発酵槽と水槽を見下ろしている。カチさんが好むように、樽はすべてコンピューターで制御されているが、手作業で操作され、醸造者によって選択されたマッシュ温度などの特定の項目がある。他の日本の醸造所とは違い、ワイマーケットブルーイングには、通常のホップを煮沸するよりもホップの風味を高めるためにシステムに接続さ��た、4段階のホプロケット(執筆時点で日本最大)がある。
ナカニシさんは、現在のシステムで要求があれば、ダブルブリュー、場合によってはトリプルブリューも可能だと言っていた。醸造の始めから終わりまでかかる時間は、通常およそ6時間だ。
これは、都市から水を集める2つの巨大な水タンクのおかげである。地下の帯水層や井戸を使う他の醸造所と比べると変に聞こえるが、(日本のお酒はボトルラベルに印字することで有名だが、)その理由は都市の水と炭素をろ過し、ビールの種類に合わせてプロファイルを変更するためである。
2つの巨大な水タンクには、HLTとして知られるマッシュ用の温水とスパージング(麦汁ろ過)用の温水が含まれ、冷水タンクには冷却用の水が含まれ���いる。この冷却プロセスは、麦汁がワールプールタンク(ビール天国の旅で出会った中で最も大きいものの一つ)を通過すると発生する。この巨大な樽は、ビールが冷め始めたら、麦汁が沸騰してよりデリケートなオイルの一部が蒸発するので、より多くのホップのフレーバーとアロマを与えるために使用される。麦汁がワールプールタンに運ばれると、中心が回転し、ホップが加えられる。この回転効果は「ティーカップ効果」と呼ばれ、アルバート・アインシュタインによって初めて要約された。アインシュタインがビールのホップに影響を与えたと誰が思うだろうか。その後、麦汁をさらに20分ほど放置して、ホップとトラブが容器の中央にコンパクトなトラブ/ホップパイルを形成できるようにする。麦汁は、容器の側面にある口からポンプでくみ出すことにより、パイルから簡単に分離できる。
麦汁は、醸造所の中央にある9つの3600リットルの発酵容器の1つに送り込まれる。これらはそれぞれグリコールで冷やされており、我々が訪問しときにはすべて満杯だった。いくつかはワイマーケットブルーイングのレギュラーラインナップで、いくつかはコラボレーションビールで、いくつかは春けやきビールフェスティバルのスペシャルビールだった。自社セット酵母もない。ビールの各バッチは、ビールごとに特別に輸入されたワイイーストの液体酵母を使用して醸造される。さらに、カチさんとナカニシさんの細かい性格により、酵母が追加されようとしているとき、感染または野生の胞子がパケットにないことを確実にするため、パケット全体を洗浄している。これは裁断道具にも当てはまる。ポケットナイフ、ハサミ、またははるかに大きなナイフなど、細心の注意を払ってすべてを洗浄している。
ビールが生産完了とみなされると、3つのBBT(Bright Beer Tank) のいずれかに移動する。これらのタンクは、ビールが樽詰め、瓶詰め、またはワイマーケットブルーイングの場合は缶詰めのいずれかに移動する前に、炭酸を入れるために使用される。ビールのすべてのバッチの3分の1はこの場所で缶詰にされ、残りはタップルーム、ワイマーケットバー、または日本中のバーのいずれかで販売されている。
ビールが缶詰め・洗浄・乾燥されると、X線を照射して、ビールの内部に金属部分がないこと、ビールのレベルがすべて同じであることを確認する。ビールに不備がある場合、出荷品からすぐに弾かれる。「試飲」を期待して、そのビールはどうなるのか尋ねたところ、ナカニシさんは笑い飛ばして、このビールは消費用じゃないと言われた。各バッチからの抜き取りサンプルは、厳しい基準を満たしているか検品されて、ラベルが貼られる。
当初は缶に熱収縮ラベルを使う予定だった。しかし、空き缶にフィルムを加熱すると缶がつぶれてしまった。もちろん、ビールを入れた後に缶を加熱することも望ましくないため、ワイマーケットブルーイングはシンプルで効果的なシングルストライプダウンを使用することにした。その後、ビールは巨大なウォークイン冷蔵庫に保管され、ビールが販売のために出荷される前に、ヤキマバレーチーフからのホップも保管されている。
ツアーで一番重要な場所は恐らくタップルームである。主に週末に開いており、タンクから新鮮なビールを飲んだり、いくつか持ち帰ったりもできる。ワイマーケットブルーイングの全スタッフもそこ(事務所の隣)で飲んでおり、スタッフと会って話すことができる。ワイマーケットブルーイングでは一般的にツアーは行っていないが、機会があれば、実際に見学するのに最適な醸造所である。

去年と2年前は、ラマイの他にBophut(日本語ではボプットと言うらしいですが、タイの人も英語を話す人もみんなボップーかボープーって感じですね。。。)にも滞在した。その時に毎日のように行っていたバーのオーナーから教えてもらったレストラン、The Hut Cafeをご紹介したい。Bophut地域で一番のお気に入りのお店だ。
先日、近くまで来たのでこのレストランに立ち寄った。
まず、私はストロベリーシェイク、彼氏はココナッツシェイク(以下の写真)をオーダー。ここのココナッツシェイクはものすごくクリーミーでリッチな味わい!
次にエビの春巻き、パッタイ、チキンのレッドカレー(以下の写真)をオーダーした。
Hutのレッドカレーは、ココナッツクリームのコクに加えて、ライムリーフ等のスパイスがしっかりと効いた絶妙なバランス。また、タイカレーのチキンはぶつ切りをそのまま煮込んだものが多いのに対して、Hutのものは一旦グリルしてからスライスしたと思われるチキンが入っている。柔らかくてジューシーなスライスチキンに、カレーのルーがタップリ付くので美味しい!
ちなみにBophutは、サムイ島の中でも物価が高いエリア。にもかかわらずHutは比較的安めで、おいしい料理を提供している。夜は予約しないと入れないことが多いのもよく分かる。
Two years ago and last year, we stayed in Bophut in addition to Lamai. During those stays, an owner of a bar we went to almost every day recommended this restaurant. The Hut Cafe is our favorite place in Bophut.
The other day, when we were nearby, we stopped by the restaurant.
First thing I ordered is strawberry shake and my boyfriend, coconut shake (see picture below). Their coconut shake is very creamy and rich!
Then we ordered prawn spring rolls, phat thai, and red curry (see picture below).
Hut’s red curry has an outstanding balance between rich coconut cream and lime leaves etc. Chicken is another thing. Their curry has tender, juicy sliced chicken. Combination of such slices and creamy curry is more than you can imagine.
Restaurants, bars, and shops in Bophut tend to be more expensive than other areas in Koh Samui. Even so, Hut dishes are inexpensive and foods are all good! It’s no mystery that, during dinner hours, it’s sometimes difficult to get in without reservation!
