On A Darker Note Sol is the emotionally abusive and manipulative type, rather than being physically abusive he would use negative reinforcement in order to get what he wants from you plus he would gaslight you crazy. ONLY HE CAN manipulate his pumpkin

summary: modern!au - eddie munson is the type of guy with an empty instagram profile, never even opening the app. but when he suddenly starts posting on his stories one summer when he's two states away that include a mystery girl, his friends need to do some digging. wc: 1.1k+ one of the dividers by @bernardsbendystraws

Eddie was always late to the trends. For many of his teenage years he spent time going to the skate park or hanging around in empty areas of the forest, trespassing with friends and selling his drugs to his classmates. He liked to party, to meet people organically.

But eventually, like everyone else, Eddie downloaded social media. He stuck to his roots, never posting, not having so much as a profile photo. He never even opened the app. Though Eddie was ‘the freak’ Munson, girls complained about it in secret to each other because ‘He just has so much potential!’

One summer, after the boy went on holiday with his uncle, everything changed. A profile photo appeared, and so did the stories. Every night, a new one popped up, and the hundreds of people who followed him opened them to find Eddie Munson with his arms wrapped around a girl, smiling into the camera.

With the way you leaned into Eddie’s body, one of his hands placed on your upper thigh, touching your bare skin courtesy of your shorts, everyone knew you couldn’t just be friends.

Eddie got endless messages from his friends. Whether it was the group of friends his age or the younger teenagers, everyone was asking about this mystery girl. ‘I missed so many chapters’ and ‘Since when do you have a girlfriend’ were upon dozens of other inquiries.

But Eddie hadn’t opened a single one of these messages. He opened the app to repost the story you had posted, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek before putting his phone away in the depths of his backpack.

At home, Nancy had organised an entire game plan to find out who you were, as she and the rest of the friend group gathered around her in Steve Harrington’s backyard.

“Remind me why you guys are doing this?” Asked Mike, only still there because his sister would take him home later. Dustin slapped his arm, saying matter-of-factly “Dude, Eddie has a girlfriend.”

“Okay, Robin will request to follow her. No one else do it otherwise it’ll look suspicious.”

“Why me?”

“Rob, you like women.” Nancy said, her expression communicating the ‘duh’ she so badly wanted to say. She was met by Steve, Robin and Jonathan’s blank stares. “She won’t think you’re a threat. If any of the boys do it, Eddie will find it weird.”

Robin hummed at the logic, taking her phone out of her back pocket and opening instagram. She instantly went to Eddie’s profile, thumb pressing on his profile photo. She gasped as the image opened up in front of her eyes, noticing the little star icon in the corner next to the letters that spelled ‘close friends’.

The photo was taken by someone else, probably one of the many people who had appeared in the previous stories, photobombing in the back. The photo showed Eddie’s van, the doors to the back opened as you sat inside, staring at the bonfire you’d made in the forest in front of the parked van. You were sitting down in the back of the van with Eddie laying down between your legs, head resting in the crook of your neck with both arms tightly wrapped around your waist.

The hickeys on your neck were visible in the image, and, with Eddie’s hair out of his face, packed in a bun on the back of his head, so were his. A bold line of text was placed above you guys in the image, with a cheeky caption ‘Guess what we did before this?’

“Eddie Munson, my man!” Steve exclaimed, leaning forward in his seat. “Okay, hard launch.” Commented Robin with a grin. She pressed on the post, and a little tag popped up with your username.

She pressed follow.

And now, they would wait.

You lifted your head up from Eddie’s chest as your phone buzzed. “Eddie, who’s robinbulky and why is she requesting to follow me?” Eddie laughed, the sound deep in his chest. “Robin’s my friend,” You swallowed at his words, eyebrows furrowing slightly with insecurity. Eddie raised his eyebrows in amusement at your obvious jealousy. “My lesbian friend, and she’s probably requesting you because I’ve been spamming photos of us on instagram.”

“Should I accept it?”

“There’s no harm in that. She's chill.”

Within ten minutes, Robin got the notification. Jumping up, she shrieked loudly, yelling “I’m in! I’m in!”

Two states across the country, you were climbing onto Eddie’s lap, pressing your lips to his in a deep kiss. A moan vibrated in Eddie’s throat. You giggled, feeling him immediately get hard under you. “Already?” You teased. “Come on baby, you know I was a virgin before you.”

You pulled away from him as your phone buzzed again, sitting back on Eddie’s thighs. “Babyyy…” Eddie whined, gripping your hips as you giggled at your phone. Your boyfriend tipped your phone towards him so he could see what you were looking at.

Robin had messaged you.

‘heyy!! I just wanted to say, I saw you on Eddie’s story and you are absolutely gorgeous!!!’

Eddie frowned. Was she flirting with you?

You replied with a ‘thank youuu!!’ then clicked onto Robin’s profile and scrolled through a few posts, pressing the follow back button before adding ‘so are you! i love your hair!’

Then, much to Eddie’s surprised, you clicked the camera button, resting your head on Eddie’s chest and angling the phone towards you both. “Baby, smile.” You instructed, smiling for the camera. Eddie squeezed your cheeks together, pulling a face to the camera. You snapped a photo. “That’s so cute, I’m saving that.” You told him, turning to press a short kiss to his lips before sending the photo to Robin.

Robin screamed and Nancy jumped up. “Oh my god!”

“I can’t believe we got the most contact with Eddie through his girlfriend!”

“Oh please, with the way they’re acting, she’s going to be his wife soon.”

Eddie took hold of your phone, throwing it across the bed. You didn’t mind. “Come on, you can do more talking to her when you meet her.” You hummed in agreement, leaning forward to press your lips to his again. “Did you forget that Uncle Wayne and I are just here to help you move back?”

Giggling, you rolled off Eddie, holding your hands out for him to take. “Let’s go on a walk. We’ve got a long trip the next few days.” Eddie took your hands, making you pull hard to get him off the bed.

“Wanna go for one last round in the back of the van?”

i've seen a lot of people talk about lando fans needing to touch grass because we're mad about that picture, but you don't understand why we're mad. honestly, i have no reason to this, but i do need to get this off my chest.

a lot of lando fans (myself included) tried to ignore the way mclaren has been treating lando off track, as well as on track. we're not going to touch the subject of on track here. we're only talking about off track here. their instagram page has more oscar/oscar's car or joint pictures than that of just lando. they do post lando, but it's always in the second or the third slide. it's not the front of it, so it looks like they're posting oscar more.

now, the issue with that picture is that its fine that they clicked the picture. mistakes happen, oscar saw that he was covering lando, and he moved over for another picture where lando was visible as well. so, we, as fans, know that there are two versions of that picture that exists. what bothers us is that they not only posted it on their instagram with a heartfelt team related caption, but also made it their twitter header.

now, the instagram thing could have gone multiple different ways than the one mclaren chose to do it. they could have added a funny caption instead, or they couldn't done a little drawing of lando, just something cute, something funny, something that feels included. instead, they chose a picture where lando is completely covered. like, when i first saw the picture, i didn't even notice that lando was behind oscar. so, they chose that picture, they chose that caption, and on top of that, they chose to only tag one driver out of the two drivers they have.

and then, to go on and make that picture their twitter header? knowing full well that there is a version of that same moment where lando is, in fact, visible? that speaks volumes.

it took them over 2k comments on instagram before they changed their header picture on twitter, and before they tried to do damage control by posting lando more.

i'm not saying that the team should stop posting oscar or something. do not twist my words. i'm saying that there should be a balance of how much they post each driver, and if they're posting a team picture, it should include the entire team.

seeing that picture, as a lando fan, it is really disheartening. to us, it feels like the team have forgotten him, or put him on the back burner. to us, it feels like they have a bias and they're not being subtle about it. it kills us because we have seen lando hold his team higher than himself, work for the team instead of himself, count every win as the team's, and every loss as his own. we have seen lando do that for years, but mclaren seem to have completely left him in the trenches.

for every "mentally weak" comment regarding lando that comes up in the press, there are other drivers and other teams that are saying it's not true and are defending lando. his own team never say a word. for every mistake or bad quali/race position, lando blames himself and mclaren let him take the brunt of it from the media and the fans, and then a week later, come out with a small article somewhere about how it was actually the team's fault, not lando's.

people underestimate the power of social media sometimes. you think it's not a big deal that lando's being posted, just in the second or the third slide? sponsors only look at the face. the face on their instagram page is not lando. the way they're promoting both drivers differently is clear, and it's clear because that what we're seeing, what's being shown to us. mclaren are trying to be subtle about it, but their subtlety left the conversation a long time ago.

the narratives that they push about lando being weak, having reached his highest potential already, buckling under pressure, all of it could be debunked if the team spoke out about it and supported their driver. they're not, so these narratives are being shoved down people's throats. the hate comments on their own instagram posts are vile, and it doesn't take that long to put out a statement that those need to stop, that the fans don't know what's going on behind the scenes, and that the fans have no right to judge a driver on things they can't do. it's not that difficult, but it really seems like mclaren would rather burn to the ground than support their driver.

i don't expect everyone to understand this. i know there's going to be people who come at me and say that i'm being a conspiracy theorist or i'm overthinking this or whatever. but, if you haven't seen a person, or have been a person, who has given your all to someone or something, and get close to nothing in return, this is the type of behaviour that cannot be ignored.

Honestly, I no longer respond to Spider Hate posts because the ops are almost always rage baiters who happily admit to doing this to get a reaction out of those who genuinely love Spider's character arc. Meanwhile, you've got the real HARDCORE Neytiri lovers who put her on a shiny pedestal, insist that she has zero flaws, and firmly believe that Spider is the root of all her suffering while posting thirst trap edits of Quaritch. Don't even get me started on the Neteyam fans who only like him because he's "hot" and post insane edits with captions that say, "Neteyam regretting his decision to save Spider." I just sigh and block them all because what the fuck?

I don't really let them bother me, but I don't let them get comfortable either. I can't.

I feel like Spider is held to a higher pedestal then every character in this film, somehow including Quaritch (cause it's just known that he's evil and therefore no one really discusses him, which is fine... until it comes to how they treat Spider and how weird it is and how they don't take into account that Spider was held as a POW by him and what that does to a kid). he is supposed to be morally perfect all the time and not want to be free and not have wants and needs and not want a culture to cling to and not want to belong in the place he was born against his will and not be at all effected by his 16 years of severe trauma and not at all let it show ever.

my biggest issue is honestly with Jake and the other humans. because they have the least reason to treat Spider as they do. and Jake did nothing to actually facilitate a neutral/amicable situation between his traumatized wife who, rightfully, struggles to cope with the presence of Quaritch's child, and the child himself. he could have stepped in. but we've only ever seen him do something when she was about to get physical with said child. this is a running theme for Jake, he runs from his problems. lets them fester. we don't know a ton about the other humans, we do know Spider was in a neglectful and potentially abusive foster family who at some point turned heel on the Na'vi, and didn't like him. and no one stepped in on that. Jake tried to send Spider away to the RDA twice.

Jake should have been the one person who couldn't have the gall to mistreat that boy, and he did so some of the worst. he was worse than that child. sure he made up for it. but he did so much damage after choosing to come to Pandora. but Spider is the demon? the one he's gotta worry about?

both stans get way too hardcore about defending their favs actions. but honestly, Jake's are worse, cause they deny he ever did anything to the kid. that he was not a key contributor to the life he led and the situations he was put through. which grinds my gears far more the Neytiri stand who defend said actions, because at least I can understand why she did what she did, even if I disagree with their belief that it was ok. I can understand and have a degree of sympathy, cause she's been through so much and Spider is a conduit for her pain, and I don't think she's getting the support she needs to actually heal, which also falls partly to Jake. Jake has no actual explanation for his behavior, outside of his need to project his self hatred onto Spider and push him away from himself.

Neteyam stans, at least a fair majority of them, weird me out, because they want to adultify and sexualize him so aggressively at 15, it makes me feel sick. I know it's not all of them, but it's to the point that I avoid them as a whole. cause... ick

and the way they make things up about him drives me nuts. Spider was his friend and likely brother. he cared for him. he grew up with him. he went back cause he loved him and wanted to free him, even though he clearly knew it was dangerous. he wanted Spider back. he covered them because he could. he looked to him before he died, not cause he "knew what he was going to do" or "knew what he had done" (which the later makes no sense, because before that, all Spider had been was loyal at every step he did everything he could, even if it risked life and limb, to protect the people), but because he wanted to look at his brother. the brother he died for. the brother who held him the entire time on the ilu, and cushioned his back against the waves and rocks with his own body. the brother who tried so hard to do *something*.

so many people are hypocrites when it comes to Spider. they will ignore 16 years of undying loyalty. 16 years of abject neglect. and then pretend to be stupid about why a 16 year old, who's been tortured, who's seen villages burned, talking killed. but during that trauma, found the first speck of parental love he'd ever felt in his life from his father, to whom he was trauma bonded to (really falls into Stockholm syndrome. but like. not the made up complex, but the actual story behind it. Spider was, in some ways, treated better by his captor then by others in his life. his captor loved and protected him and didn't push him away and loved him for who he was and didn't try to change him. didn't try to abandon him. even if he was awful in every other way) and then said child's knee jerk reaction after the worst night of his life, when he already lost one family member, was... that he couldn't let his dad die. he hated him. but if he died, he'd be an orphan again, alone again. he wasn't thinking with logic. was Neytiri thinking with logic when she put her knife to a child? do we ever question her state of being when she did something morally reprehensible? no. but we do expect a child to make a safe sound decision

and he fell for the same man Jake did. in different ways. but same man. and that man held a lot more emotional power over him, as his father, then he did Jake. and Spider was a child while Jake was in his 20s. but Jake claimed the toruk while Spider's yet to have the chance to do anything to "redeem" himself. but screw Spider.

Joost had been thinking about you for weeks.

He couldn’t explain why, not even to himself. You weren’t someone he knew—he’d never spoken to you, never seen you in real life—but somehow, you stayed on his mind like a loop he couldn’t break.

He’d see hints of you in strangers. In a passing laugh. In a girl stepping off a bus. In a shadow across the street that, just for a second, looked like it could’ve been you. It was driving him a little mad, honestly. He wasn’t the type to get caught up in things like this. So, he figured maybe what he needed was air. People. Something to ground him. When Apson asked him to grab coffee that Saturday, he jumped at the chance. Anything to clear his head.

They sat outside the café, sunlight pouring over the table, the hum of street life buzzing in the background. Joost was mid-conversation when his words caught in his throat.

Because there you were.

Inside. Sitting by the window. Notebook open, one hand lazily stirring your drink, completely unaware that the guy outside had gone completely still.

Joost blinked. Then blinked again.

“Apson,” he said quietly, almost like he was afraid to break the moment.

“What?” Apson asked, lifting his cup.

Joost tilted his head slightly. “That’s her.”

Apson glanced toward the window. “Who—wait.. her her?”

Joost nodded slowly, unable to look away. “Yeah.”

Apson leaned back in his chair, a slow grin spreading across his face. “Well, damn. You’ve been losing sleep over her for weeks. Go say something.”

Joost dragged a hand down his face. “I can’t just—she looks busy. She’s probably in the middle of something important.”

“And you’re in the middle of not talking to her. What have you got to lose? Shoot your shot.”

He hesitated, heart pounding harder than it should’ve. You looked serene, almost out of reach, and yet—you were right there.

“Alright,” he muttered under his breath. “I’m doing it.”

Without another word, he stood up and headed for the door, palms slightly sweaty, every nerve alive. He entered the café slowly, each step hesitant, as if he thought you'd vanish if he moved too fast. When he finally reached your table, you glanced up, arching a brow as you set your pen down.

“Can I help you?” you asked, your tone calm but edged with curiosity.

He rubbed the back of his neck, clearly nervous. “You’re Y/N, right? I promise I’m not being weird, I just.. I saw you and figured I’d regret it if I didn’t say something.”

You leaned back slightly, eyes narrowing just a bit. “Say something like..?” He stumbled over his words, trying to form a sentance that wouldn’t give ‘i’ve been obsessing over you for weeks now.’ and creep you out.

You chuckled at his nervousness, the corners of your lips twitching upward as you gestured to the empty seat across from you. Joost quickly took the offer, sitting down with a sort of rushed gratitude that only made his awkward charm more apparent.

“You’re Joost, right?” you asked, casually.

His head snapped up, eyes wide with surprise. “Uh— I, yes, I am. Sorry—how do you know that?” You gave him a look, one brow raised in disbelief, as if the answer was obvious. “Seriously? You were in the biggest song contest in Europe. You represented our country, remember?” A hint of red colored his cheeks as he let out a soft, self-conscious laugh. “Right. l guess I didn’t expect someone like you to recognize me.” You leaned forward slightly, resting your chin on your hand. “Well, I didn’t expect to see someone like you awkwardly hovering by my table like a lost tourist when you carry yourself so effortlessly online, so.. I guess we’re both a little surprised.”

Joost laughed, more at ease now. “Fair. I was hoping to come off as cool and casual. Clearly, I nailed it.”You laughed, setting your notebook aside to give him your full attention. “Well, as intriguing as this conversation has been, I have a shoot in a few minutes so I’m afraid I have to go. It was nice talking to you, Joost. Message me sometime.” You smile, tearing a piece of paper from your notebook and writing down your number before leaving the café with one last smile sent his way.

He went out a few minutes after you, sitting back down next to his friend who started interrogating him the second he sat down. He showed him the phone number and Apson whistled. “Damn, you scored.” He chuckled, patting his back.

Joost stared at the piece of paper and smiled to himself. “Yeah, I did.”

Luckyfiles Analysis

Cabby and Clover, a ship that I will be referring to this point onwards as Cablover (sounds like Cab Lover, which is fun!), is something rather important to me! The two have a lot of potential for a dynamic (could be platonic, too!) that gets often overlooked even by the show itself, and I’m hoping that this will help explain why this has invaded my brain for the past several months by this point. :)

Please note that this was all written before Season 4, and therefore cannot take any of it into account. If there’s something that either furthers or weakens this by then, I cannot know about it! Just keep that in mind if you were to come across this later on.

Dynamic

I think it’s best to start with their overall dynamic, or at least how I’d perceive it. Due to how little these two actually interact, this section in particular may end up having a lot of assumptions, so just keep that in mind.

To start with the basics, I think at its core, Cablover can be considered an “opposites attract” relationship. Clover is more carefree, Cabby is dedicated. Clover is lucky, Cabby has constant bad things happening to her. Clover is a plant and often connected to nature, Cabby is metallic and therefore can be considered “unnatural”. On its surface, there’s a lot of appeal for those who love relationships in which the characters end up rather different.

And yet… there’s still similarities, especially once you start digging! Both the two can be rather perceptive; in fact, Clover can identify her butterflies just by their differences in movement, and that requires a really good eye!

Both of them can be quite silly; Cabby very frequently cracks jokes about situations, often involving puns of all things.

Both of them care a lot for others, both of them have different struggles with self-centering, and both of them have felt like they had done too much to hurt others, even sharing a similar coping mechanism of self-isolating.

Their few interactions also indicate a friendly relationship. Cabby states herself that she thinks Clover is a “sweet girl” even if she gets distracted easily and was the first to observe that she was missing from the meeting. It’s also notable to me that Cabby never saw Clover’s luck as a bad thing; rather than viewing it as something that inevitably led others to harm (an assumption made by Nickel that even generally thoughtful contestants like Candle did not disprove, merely instead stating that Clover did not intend this harm), she viewed it as a way to help others in challenges. Even if a large motivation was strategy, Cabby did still seem fond of Clover while including her in the egg drop challenge, even side-hugging her while pulling her close to explain her idea.

Even shoving her off the cliff was more out of intent to show an example, accurately predicting that Clover would’ve been perfectly okay, and Clover found that fun! This is furthered by Clover directly telling Cabby that she had fun in the Season 3 finale episodes, even.

I think that’s a nice way to segue into more of Clover’s side of things. I think it’s easy to take Clover’s comment about “I would’ve done the same to you!” as some sort of lighthearted threat in response to something she didn’t enjoy, but like…

Look at her :) she was truly so happy to experience that, I can imagine it would’ve been like a fun ride to her! Even if Cabby was confused and maybe anxious at the suggestion, I think it’s very possible that Clover has an inkling that Cabby actually would enjoy such a thing. Cabby is durable, so there’s far less of a danger to her than there would be for many other objects, and she had a blast literally leaping off a cliff in the first challenge; maybe Clover couldn’t have seen how joyous she looked during the action, but she surely would’ve noticed Cabby had no reservations coming out of the tube. Clover herself noted that Cabby had not done anything particularly malicious, and I think this was merely a clumsy attempt to bond with and cheer up somebody who evidently seemed quite unsure of herself even just in her speech.

Building off Clover’s surprisingly good perception, there’s a subtle detail in the argument between Cabby and Test Tube, and how Clover mediates it. Under closer inspection, it’s clear that Test Tube is who turned that into specifically an argument by outright insulting Cabby, even if Cabby was rather irritated while voicing a concern. While Clover does seem to view both sides at fault for the argument, it’s very interesting to me that she, again, goes to first flip Test Tube’s “smile”. Cabby was not perfect in that argument, especially not with what happened after that, but keeping in mind that subtle acknowledgment of the true instigator combined with Clover later saying she hadn’t viewed Cabby as malicious? I think it’s pretty clear that Clover had a far more optimistic view of Cabby than most other contestants did, and saw her intent to do well even through things that could be so, so easy to misunderstand.

Even if that’s about where their interactions end, I think there’s still more to explore with how this dynamic could develop.

Both of them have struggled with their self esteem issues, and even if they largely figured out ways to cope and feel better, that isn’t to say they could never still struggle with those emotions, never feel reminders. How much both of them could connect over the fear of hurting others, assuring the other that they truly mean well, that they don’t seek to cause harm, that they are worth being around.

Focusing on more positives, I think Cabby could help ground Clover in some ways, help her truly bring out that analytical side of her. Clover I think excels most at emotional understanding, leaving logical deduction to be harder for her… at least going off the fact that she assumed Bot would’ve incriminated themself through a crossword puzzle, of all things. They could come up with puzzles as a fun game, perhaps!

Maybe Cabby could even help Clover focus a little more. Obviously it is impossible for anybody to solve everything– Clover’s easily-distracted nature seems to just be how her mind works– but I imagine Cabby could still find coping mechanisms for her that could help, and I imagine it just feels nice to have someone else there for support regardless.

Similarly, I think Clover could help Cabby loosen up a little, feel happier about things. I think Cabby has come a long way in her development, feeling overall better about herself and feeling less of a need to be competitive, but I could still imagine that could be something she’d struggle with over time– and having a little bundle of joy in Clover would be perfect for that. Truly, they could go back to the simple days of leaping off cliffs, kept safe by both Cabby’s durability and Clover’s luck.

Knowing how well Clover can understand others, I think it’d help Cabby a lot to have another perspective on that, too. I imagine that even if she truly tries a lot, it can still be hard to understand others well just because of how her mind works. Having somebody more patient talking through situations with her, helping her analyze things she may be unsure of I imagine could go a long way.

There’s simply a lot to think about! Dynamic-wise, I think this is about all I can extrapolate without getting into outright headcanon territory, at least more than I already have– but I think this is at least a good start. I have more up my sleeve, though!

Connections

There’s some other notable things connecting the two even beyond what I’ve already mentioned, and I wish every single day this was all capitalized on. I can only hope for future content…

Regardless! I think the first thing that’s notable to me is that Cabby had been studying Clover from day one, and we even SEE this in the first episode.

Like, yes, surely she found her abilities to be very interesting… but, like, she pulled Clover close to her. She called Clover “sweet”. No matter what context you view these interactions in, it’s clear she had a fondness towards Clover.

Cabby’s intense studying of Clover is what led to the wide realization of Clover’s luck, including by Clover herself. In a twist of irony, what Cabby considered to be beneficial for everyone is immediately considered to be a curse by Clover herself, jumpstarting Clover’s arc from being a lighthearted, albeit self-centered girl to somebody with a deep fear of hurting others, now left trying to figure out how to just do good even in the face of outright murder accusations.

…Sounds a little familiar, putting it that way.

Truly, what Clover needed to learn all along is that her luck is beneficial, at least most of the time– she just needed to share it with others around her! Almost what Cabby seemed to pick up on all along by wanting Clover’s luck to help her team.

And yet… Clover does more than that. She needs to constantly be helping, to be making up for this innate gift that she has, no matter how much hatred it’s caused her from some, no matter how she could feel about situations where it may have even hurt her.

I think that’s something Cabby could understand all too well.

The two have had to do so much to prove themselves far beyond the bare minimum, to make up for their very being, just for who they are. They can’t just be baseline acceptable, they can’t just be some person who exists, they need to actively be doing GOOD for everyone around them at all times. I’d argue both have very significant struggles with moral OCD, but I think that’s a conversation for another time. The important bit is… I think both of them would get it. They would get the idea of just their mere selves being what causes harm, just from being there as themselves.

It is evident that this is something the two have also internalized to their core, causing them both to self-isolate in various ways as a result. There are implications throughout I Am Chocolate! that Cabby had been isolating herself away from others, rejecting any means of connection until close to the end, and even episodes later she still says that being alone is “what she does best”. Clover had done similar after believing her luck to be a curse, avoiding others as much as she could in order to avoid potentially “hurting them”.

There’s even something to be said about the avoidance of things deeply meaningful to them. Cabby had stopped using her files for a while after believing them to be a harmful, reductive view of everyone else, and when Clover temporarily became luckless, she went on to talk about how Goo and Balloon being evenly matched is exactly why there shouldn’t be any luck. Neither of them viewed something so important to them as good or helpful, even worsened by how everyone else seemed to treat these things.

And as a side note… even their eliminations have parallels. Both unanimous, and yet so different. Cabby unanimously eliminated out of pure hatred, Clover unanimously eliminated out of pure concern. If Clover is full of luck all the time, then Cabby is devoid of it with how awfully her life had gone throughout the season.

If Cabby was the one to see Clover’s luck as good all along, then Clover was someone who saw Cabby as good all along, even if she didn’t get many chances to say so. Clover pointed out that Cabby wasn’t malicious, and I think she meant it. Even if ultimately Clover wasn’t among those who voted for Cabby, I can still imagine it would’ve meant so much to hear that from somebody, especially somebody less biased due to not quite being friends.

I think there’s a lot of parallels that could’ve been capitalized on between the two. So many things that feel connected, that could’ve led to more ties than what were there. Even if the show hasn’t currently capitalized on any of this, I definitely sure will.

Conclusion

Happy 3rd anniversary! Destra's page was one of the first character pages I ever translated, so here's a cleaner, more accurately translated version. Translation notes and image ids under the cut.

I noted this on the first version of this post as well, but one thing of particular interest that came up was that note next to Benedict. The first line reads as “Secretly” and the second + third seems to be this phrase:

It seems like it has a variety of meanings, including potentially romantic ones, but I’m not sure contextually how to read it. I went with “caring for” as a hopefully middle-of-the-road sort of option.

The Introduction:

COINTELPRO (syllabic abbreviation derived from Counter Intelligence Program; 1956–1971) was a series of covert and illegal[1][2] projects actively conducted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting, and disrupting domestic American political organizations.[3][4] FBI records show COINTELPRO resources targeted groups and individuals the FBI[5] deemed subversive,[6] including feminist organizations,[7][8] the Communist Party USA,[9] anti–Vietnam War organizers, activists of the civil rights and Black power movements (e.g. Martin Luther King Jr., the Nation of Islam, and the Black Panther Party), environmentalist and animal rights organizations, the American Indian Movement (AIM), Chicano and Mexican-American groups like the Brown Berets and the United Farm Workers, independence movements (including Puerto Rican independence groups such as the Young Lords and the Puerto Rican Socialist Party), a variety of organizations that were part of the broader New Left, and white supremacist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan[10][11] and the far-right group National States' Rights Party.[12]

Methods COINTELPRO Utilized

According to attorney Brian Glick in his book War at Home, the FBI used five main methods during COINTELPRO:

Infiltration: Agents and informers did not merely spy on political activists. Their main purpose was to discredit, disrupt and negatively redirect action. Their very presence served to undermine trust and scare off potential supporters. The FBI and police exploited this fear to smear genuine activists as agents.

Psychological warfare: The FBI and police used a myriad of "dirty tricks" to undermine movements. They planted false media stories and published bogus leaflets and other publications in the name of targeted groups. They forged correspondence, sent anonymous letters, and made anonymous telephone calls. They spread misinformation about meetings and events, set up pseudo movement groups run by government agents, and manipulated or strong-armed parents, employers, landlords, school officials, and others to cause trouble for activists. They used bad-jacketing to create suspicion about targeted activists, sometimes with lethal consequences.[74]

Harassment via the legal system: The FBI and police abused the legal system to harass dissidents and make them appear to be criminals. Officers of the law gave perjured testimony and presented fabricated evidence as a pretext for false arrests and wrongful imprisonment. They discriminatorily enforced tax laws and other government regulations and used conspicuous surveillance, "investigative" interviews, and grand jury subpoenas in an effort to intimidate activists and silence their supporters.[73][75]

Illegal force: The FBI conspired with local police departments to threaten dissidents; to conduct illegal break-ins in order to search dissident homes; and to commit vandalism, assaults, beatings and assassinations.[73] The objective was to frighten or eliminate dissidents and disrupt their movements.

Undermine public opinion: One of the primary ways the FBI targeted organizations was by challenging their reputations in the community and denying them a platform to gain legitimacy. Hoover specifically designed programs to block leaders from "spreading their philosophy publicly or through the communications media". Furthermore, the organization created and controlled negative media meant to undermine black power organizations. For instance, they oversaw the creation of "documentaries" skillfully edited to paint the Black Panther Party as aggressive, and false newspapers that spread misinformation about party members. The ability of the FBI to create distrust within and between revolutionary organizations tainted their public image and weakened chances at unity and public support.[49]

The FBI specifically developed tactics intended to heighten tension and hostility between various factions in the black power movement, for example between the Black Panthers and the US Organization. For instance, the FBI sent a fake letter to the US Organization exposing a supposed Black Panther plot to murder the head of the US Organization, Ron Karenga. They then intensified this by spreading falsely attributed cartoons in the black communities pitting the Black Panther Party against the US Organization.[49] This resulted in numerous deaths, among which were San Diego Black Panther Party members John Huggins, Bunchy Carter and Sylvester Bell.[73] Another example of the FBI's anonymous letter writing campaign is how they turned the Blackstone Rangers head, Jeff Fort, against former ally Fred Hampton, by stating that Hampton had a hit on Fort.[49] They also were instrumental in developing the rift between Black Panther Party leaders Eldridge Cleaver and Huey Newton, as executed through false letters inciting the two leaders of the Black Panther Party.[49]

In order to eliminate black militant leaders whom they considered dangerous, the FBI is believed to have worked with local police departments to target specific individuals,[78] accuse them of crimes they did not commit, suppress exculpatory evidence and falsely incarcerate them. Elmer "Geronimo" Pratt, a Black Panther Party leader, was incarcerated for 27 years before a California Superior Court vacated his murder conviction, ultimately freeing him. Appearing before the court, an FBI agent testified that he believed Pratt had been framed, because both the FBI and the Los Angeles Police Department knew he had not been in the area at the time the murder occurred.[79][80]

In 1969 the FBI special agent in San Francisco wrote Hoover that his investigation of the Black Panther Party had concluded that in his city, at least, the Panthers were primarily engaged in feeding breakfast to children. Hoover fired back a memo implying the agent's career goals would be directly affected by his supplying evidence to support Hoover's view that the Black Panther Party was "a violence-prone organization seeking to overthrow the Government by revolutionary means".[84]

Hoover supported using false claims to attack his political enemies. In one memo he wrote: "Purpose of counterintelligence action is to disrupt the Black Panther Party and it is immaterial whether facts exist to substantiate the charge."[85]

Intended Effects of COINTELPRO

The intended effect of the FBI's COINTELPRO was to "expose, disrupt, misdirect, or otherwise neutralize" groups that the FBI officials believed were "subversive"[58] by instructing FBI field operatives to:[59] 1. When did they start?

Centralized operations under COINTELPRO officially began in August 1956 with a program designed to "increase factionalism, cause disruption and win defections" inside the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). Tactics included anonymous phone calls, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) audits, and the creation of documents that would divide the American communist organization internally.[9] An October 1956 memo from Hoover reclassified the FBI's ongoing surveillance of black leaders, including it within COINTELPRO, with the justification that the movement was infiltrated by communists.[31] In 1956, Hoover sent an open letter denouncing Dr. T. R. M. Howard, a civil rights leader, surgeon, and wealthy entrepreneur in Mississippi who had criticized FBI inaction in solving recent murders of George W. Lee, Emmett Till, and other African Americans in the South.[32] When the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an African-American civil rights organization, was founded in 1957, the FBI began to monitor and target the group almost immediately, focusing particularly on Bayard Rustin, Stanley Levison, and eventually Martin Luther King Jr.[33]

How did the news get out about COINTELPRO?

The program was secret until March 8, 1971, when the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI burgled an FBI field office in Media, Pennsylvania, took several dossiers, and exposed the program by passing this material to news agencies.[1][54] The boxing match known as the Fight of the Century between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in March 1971 provided cover for the activist group to successfully pull off the burglary. Muhammad Ali was a COINTELPRO target because he had joined the Nation of Islam and the anti-war movement.[55] Many news organizations initially refused to immediately publish the information, with the notable exception of The Washington Post. After affirming the reliability of the documents, it published them on the front page (in defiance of the Attorney General's request), prompting other organizations to follow suit. Within the year, Director J. Edgar Hoover declared that the centralized COINTELPRO was over, and that all future counterintelligence operations would be handled case by case.[56][57]
