Compilation and General Update

I've spend the evening reorganizing/archiving a lot of this blog, and I've noticed I talk around a lot of ideas rather than explaining them.

First on the docket, I revamped the organization system to be more streamlined and easier to use (at least for me, hopefully for visitors as well). Secondly, I archived a lotta (most) projects that I'm not really reserving brain space for at the moment. They're all in varying states of archived-ness in my brain, but they're all squished into one folder for blog purposes.

I'll continue to use this blog for resources, inspiration, challenges, and the like, but I have also picked out the Big Projects throughout the years to organize them better.

Current Projects

Handholding through Hell: the translation of a current dnd campaign into more traditional prose storytelling. Five party members wake up in a hell-like demi-plane with no knowledge of how they got there. On their hunt for a way back home, they discover that their pasts have followed them (or brought them?) here.

All or Nothing: Widofjord Uni AU, loosely based on the novel Coffee Cake. Heavy focus on Fjord, who needs to save his slipping grades to keep his athletic scholarship for rowing. Secondary focus on Caleb, who's recovering from some very intense drama in his ridiculously competitive academic program by working at the local cat cafe. Caleb offers to tutor Fjord and they begin to explore a romance. A semi-magic USA university AU in which Mollymauk deals fake IDs, Artagan’s a disillusioned ex-grad student, and Yasha gets to major in gardening.

BeauYasha Kidfic: Inspired by domestic beauyasha in the m9 epilogue, a vague idea of a future fic in which they help fjord overturn the orphanage that harmed him and end up with a half-orc kid of their own. got spooked when a lot of the after talk was quite similar to this idea and put it down.

Archived Original Projects

Vampire Apocalypse: Steampunk Lady Pirates: Hollywood fell to a vampire underground, and one young woman spearheads a resistance of sky pirates, all to get her sister back.

Antonita, the Spanish Contrabandista: A rewrite/update/retelling of an 1850s novella of a female pirate and her adventures with a Texan navy captain and his wife.

Outlander & Urchin: A traditional western fantasy story about two orphans who help each other survive while a magical war wages across the land. Reunited as adults, they realize their lives may be bigger than they thought.

Golden Gay Bridge (aka Gone): technically my undergrad thesis & 2016 nano project. A young woman loses her mother to cancer and goes on a roadtrip to find her elusive biological father and unearth half of herself.

Archived Fanfiction Projects

Rockstar AU: Louis is a rockstar; Harry is the label's new popstar. The two are forced to tour together for publicity. Liam is management, Niall is Harry's bestie, Zayn is Louis's bestie. Harry/Louis enemies to besties main plot, Ziall + Louam subplots.

Playboy AU: Harry runs an escort business; Louis and Niall are bunnies, Zayn and Liam are bartenders (Ziall + Louam)

Uni+ AU: Niall and Zayn fall in love at University, but their futures conspire against them – until they meet again. Essentially a uni!AU + a second chance trope.

Proposal AU: a ziall retelling of The Proposal (2009). That's it. That's the project. ALT: Cutting Edge AU (similar premise).

B99/1D crossover: Requested by bestie in like... 2015. An AU in which the 1d boys are Brooklyn police officers. Will likely not touch this one again.

Outlander 31 day challenge.

I’ve lost track of the days…. Favorite outfit.

The costumes in this show have always been amazing. I think seeing Jamie in a red coat at Alamance though took the cake for me as the top. First of all, he looks stunning. Second, the drama that coat adds to the episode…. He’s already torn on his allegiance to governor Tryon and having to go to battle against family, friends, neighbors. Now he also has to wear the clothing of his enemy. Talk about crawling out of your skin.

Day 19: Affection/Wake (Indraste)

Summary: Indy wakes up to a demanding Sprite Darter.

Indraste was in bed, drifting sleepily. The sun was starting to come in through the window against the bed, which meant that it was afternoon, and nearly time to wake up. But the covers smelled like Blix, and now that she had a bed, well… she’d caught herself just lying in it, enjoying the pillows and the feel of the sheets against her skin. Some nights, she still slept in the tree outside the window (generally after a nightmare), but more often than not these days, she stayed inside.

She’d also recently rediscovered reading in bed, and there was a pile of cookbooks on her bedside table, which she liked to flip through during her downtime. Currently, most of them were about cakes and pastries. She was never going to be the sort of baker who could invent new foods, but she was good at following a recipe. It was like a spell, in a way.

Indy rolled over, stretching flat onto her back, and let the sun warm her skin, eyes still determinedly closed. It was nice to be able to wake up slowly; she’d rarely had the opportunity in Outland, and it was good to remind herself that she could be calmer, these days. Less on edge.

A soft fluttering sound entered the room, and Indy roused just enough to prepare for Asha to land on her chest. She laughed as the Sprite Darter snuggled in against her neck, humming gently.

“Good morning to you, too, baby. Is your food dish empty?” Indy lifted a hand, languidly running her thumb along Asha’s head.

Asha hissed, her one sound that was almost a word: “Iiiiisssh.”

She was well aware of what that meant by this point in their life together. Indy laughed again, which only caused the Darter to snuggle in more determinedly. “If ‘fish’ is your first word, little girl, I’m going to be so sad. What’s wrong with ‘mama?’��

“Iiiiisssh.”

“Okay, okay. We don’t have any in the house. Are you up for a trip to the river?”

Asha leapt from her, doing three rapid loops through the room, before landing on the top of Indy’s wardrobe.

“Fair enough!” With a soft grunt, Indy sat up, smiling over at her charge, and began to prepare to go fishing. Who was she to say no to such an adorable request?

An Ending and a Beginning (War/Family)

“Magistrix!” 

The Duskwatcher slammed her fists on the door again, but there was no response.

No time to wait.

She reached for a runed scroll, pressing it flat on the door with her palms. She watched as the runes on the parchment began to glow, and then turned her head away from the blast, the door violently ripping itself off its hinges and into the wall behind.

“Magistrix?” she shouted, again, this time more a question than a command. Drawing her shortsword she peered into the dark before stepping inside. She could see and hear almost nothing, save for the dull hum and gleam of her blade.

She pushed forward down the hallway, and into the first room, her eyes eventually adjusting to the lack of light. Dust caked the sparse furniture: a single chair and a pair of tables. On the floor she could see a robe and some other garments. They looked like they had gone untouched for weeks, perhaps months.

“Magistrix… ?” she asked, more softly than before, as though something in this place would answer.

It did not.

The Duskwatcher looked for the next door and found it, twisting it, and finding no resistance. And then she saw her. 

On the bed. 

The body of an elf, with dry, stretched skin coated with a deathly pallor; eyes rolled back in her skull, with white hair long since faded.

She’s withering.

The Duskwatcher bounded forward, unfurling another scroll, and pressing it on the magistrix’s chest. This time, the arcane energies coursed inwards, surging into the elf’s nearly expired body.

The magistrix’s eyes flung open, and she shrieked.

The Duskwatcher fumbled in her pack, pulling out a flask, pressing it to the ancient elf’s lips. “Arcwine, here, you need to drink, you were…” 

“You brought me back,” the magistrix said, after several minutes had passed, in a soft voice twinged with disappointment. 

“There’s no time to argue. I’ve used enough as it is,” the Duskwatcher said, hastening her cadence. “The outlanders, the Dusk Lily, they’ve made their push. They’re at the Nighthold now, the Grand Magistrix…” her voice trailed off, for a moment, unable to think of what should come next.

“The Grand Magistrix will need our strength,” she said, with some finality. “But you must leave the city. This may be the end for -”

“Child,” the older Shal’dorei interrupted. “If this is the end, so be it.”

The magistrix sat up in her bed, still weak. “I have no reason to prorogue it. Let it come.”

The Duskwatcher shook her head, lifting off her black crested helm, revealing her own brilliant white hair, with shimmering violet eyes to match.

“The Dusk Lily will know who and what you are, and they will… The death they will give you will be neither clean nor quiet.”

The ancient elf smiled, shaking her head. “Child, I welcome death in whatever form it chooses to appear. Life and I have long ceased to be friends. There is little left for me, except...”

“Then do this for me, mother. Elune knows I’ve asked for nothing else,” she said, a hint of resentment creeping into her words. “You always talked about the Sundering taking from you the life you thought you would have… this is that second chance. Go out and find it.”

“Mother…” the magistrix murmured, a look of genuine surprise creasing her face. “You’ve not called me that in... I don’t how many years.”

The Duskwatcher shook her head, gently but firmly hoisting the magistrix to her feet. “Enough talk. Time to go.”

The magistrix did not resist, though she struggled to keep pace with the taller, younger elf pulling her along. As they reached the dim light of the street, the Duskwatcher stopped, putting her helmet back on before turning to the magistrix.

“This is where we part ways, mother. My watchers have cleared this street, all the way to the shield… you should be safe going that way.”

She released her mother’s hand, but the magistrix did not let go.

“And what of you, child? Where are you going?” 

“I pledged my blade and my life to the city, and to the Grand Magistrix,” the Duskwatcher answered, a hint of fear and trepidation in her voice, though one quickly papered over with pride. “We may yet lose both, but… they shall not find the taking easy.” 

The magistrix nodded, tears beginning to make the long journey down the length of her face. 

“Let me go, mother,” she said, quietly. “This is the life I chose. This is where I was meant to be.”

The Duskwatcher carefully pried her mother’s hand off her own, taking a final look at her before turning down the street, quickening her pace with each step. 

And then she vanished from view, leaving the magistrix alone with her thoughts, and her tears.

Best Anime Available on Netflix 2019

8. Kill La Kill (2013)

1 season, 25 episodes | IMDb: 8/10

If I had to sum up Kill la Kill in two words, they’d be “fashion battle.” Broadly speaking, its story is pretty much beat for beat what you’d expect from a series about a magical teen — developing powers, last-minute turns of the tide — but the specifics are just bonkers enough to keep that from being a weakness Which are some of the best anime on Netflix. At Honnouji Academy, clothes bestow supernatural abilities on their wearer, turning the usual high school hierarchies into a battleground. At the center of it all is transfer student Ryuko Matoi, who’s come to Honnouji in search of her father’s killer. Her sidekick, a sentient sailor outfit, puts her on the level of the school’s student council, allowing her to tussle with them in her quest for the truth. More modest viewers be warned: the series’ focus on clothing also lends itself to a significant amount of fanservice. As the series progresses, the outfits get skimpier and skimpier until there’s barely anything there at all.

7. Fate/Zero (2011)

2 seasons, 28 episodes | IMDb: 8.3/10

For those looking for darker fare, Fate/Zero should hit the spot. As may be obvious from the fact that the driving event behind the whole series is called “the Fourth Holy Grail War,” it’s heavy stuff. The war is a contest between a select group of mages and their attendant spirits. (The spirits, in one of the series’ strangest gambits, range from Alexander the Great to King Arthur.) They compete for the power of the Grail, which will grant a wish to each of the winning pair. The resulting assortment of competitors doubles as a mix of ideals and morals, and the shifting balance is one of the best aspects of the show. Though there’s a fair amount of comedy mixed in, it’s quite a bleak series, with a death count to rival Game of Thrones and eldritch horrors to contend with, to boot.

6. Castlevania (2017)

1 season, 5 episodes | IMDb: 8/10

Even those unfamiliar with anime are likely to have heard of Castlevania, as the franchise is one of the jewels in Konami’s crown. The anime series is produced by Netflix, and boasts a voice cast including Graham McTavish as Count Dracula, who vows revenge against Wallachia after the death of his wife, and Richard Armitage as Trevor Belmont, the last of a clan of monster hunters, who leads the fight against him. (Matt Frewer also features in the cast, which should be a treat for any fellow Max Headroom enthusiasts.) There’s blood a-plenty, and a nice balance between monster and man as per most gothic horror stories — as well as a somewhat romantic aspect, as Dracula is portrayed as a sympathetic villain. The series is also just gorgeously animated, and with a first season of only four episodes, well worth your time.

5. Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)

1 season, 51 episodes | IMDb: 8.6/10

Fullmetal fans and newbies alike are somewhat spoiled for choice when it comes to Netflix’s offerings: Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are both available on the streaming service, alongside the recent live-action film. But we’re here for anime, so we’ll just discuss the first two. For the purposes of this list, we’re counting both series as one entity, as Fullmetal Alchemist is a seminal property, but not to fear, I’m not about to leave you in the dark. Both Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are adaptations of the original manga, which tells the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, as they search for the Philosopher’s Stone. In an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy, they’ve been transformed. Edward has lost his leg, and sacrifices his arm as well in order to save Alphonse’s soul, binding it to a suit of armor. The Stone is their ticket to restoration. The more recent Brotherhood hews much more closely to the manga, whereas Fullmetal Alchemist essentially turns into an original series about halfway through. In the end, they complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses, but if you have to pick just one, I’d go for Brotherhood as the “canon” experience.

4. Rurouni Kenshin (1996)

3 seasons, 95 episodes | IMDb: 8.5/10

Like most other entries on this list, Rurouni Kenshin was adapted from a manga series (which appeared in the legendary Shōnen Jump magazine). The title refers to its protagonist, Himura Kenshin, a former killing machine who is now committed to helping others to try to atone for his sins. Of course, his love of peace is challenged when it becomes apparent that someone else has assumed his former mantle as an assassin and plans to throw the Meiji Government into chaos. The characters are all well-defined and well-developed, with the biggest hook being the contrast between Kenshin’s apparent happy-go-lucky attitude and vow never to kill again, and what we know him to be capable of due to his reputation. He’s also a walking example of the way the series focuses on period to tell a story rather than using it simply as set dressing: the show takes place during a transition period in Japanese history, and Kenshin is just as much in flux.

3. Inuyasha (2000)

2 seasons, 167 episodes | IMDb: 7.9/10

Inuyasha is the rare franchise that manages to strike a balance between cute and horrifying. To liken it to a current pop culture phenomenon, it’s similar to Outlander, in that its basic plot sounds like something out of a romance novel: a young woman, Kagome, is sent back in time, and must then contend with forces beyond her reckoning, all while getting to know a rambunctious man (well, in this case, half dog-demon), Inuyasha, to whom she seems to be mysteriously bound. There’s plenty of time-travel fluff to go around, but in Inuyasha’s case, it’s augmented by nightmare fuel in the form of a host of demons searching for the magic jewel in Kagome’s possession. The centipede monster in the first episode sets the bar for how unsettling these monsters look, as well as the show’s overall structure as a sort of monster-of-the-week affair. To that end, the show can get a little repetitive, but the cast is uniformly great (including Inuyasha’s antihero brother Sesshomaru, who I think I can confidently say is “the hot one”), and the balance between fun and horror is a rare find.

2. Attack on Titan (2013)

1 season, 51 episodes | IMDb: 8.8/10

Since the manga began in 2009, Attack on Titan has become something of a cultural sensation. At present, only the first season of the anime, which was produced in 2013, is available on Netflix, but it works on its own. (It’s also notably a series that benefits from being available to binge rather than view doled out in segments, as seeing it all in one fell swoop — or a few swoops — makes its repeated cliffhangers less obvious and thereby more tolerable.) Broadly speaking, it’s almost a mecha series, as the driving force of the plot involves fighting giant creatures (the Titans of the title), an enterprise that only starts to become truly tenable when it transpires that one of the human characters, Eren, is a Titan, himself. The difference is aesthetic: the Titans are awful to look at, as they are basically giant humans with their skin stripped away, and their muscles contorted to look as terrifying as possible. As for why it all works, it ultimately comes down to the focus on the coming-of-age stories and how each character’s arc dials into the anxieties that are part and parcel of growing up and dealing with loss. The series is also fairly brutal when it comes to reflecting the realities of living in what is effectively a war zone, as every character is fair game when it comes to Titan fodder. Equal parts steampunk romp and war story, Attack on Titan is one of the best anime series in the game.

VIZ MEDIA

1. Bleach (2004)

3 seasons, 366 episodes | IMDb: 8.2/10 Bleach has it all. It’s stylish as hell, it’s incredibly well-acted, it’s genre-fluid, and on top of that, it’s well-written. Though it starts out fairly simply, it builds and builds, transforming into an epic that more than earns its place in the pantheon of great anime. The story begins when Ichigo Kurasaki, a high schooler capable of seeing ghosts, takes on the duties of a Soul Reaper in order to protect his family.  It’s a transition that the show handles beautifully, and does again and again as it progresses. The world of Bleach (and the mythology involved) just keeps getting bigger, without ever falling short, or falling flat. The series is also impossible to peg as one genre or another, as there are elements of almost everything baked in. It’s an epic, and unmissable as such. Creator Tite Kubo’s style is just the cherry on top of the cake.

Prompt 15: Canon-Divergent where Katniss realizes she loves Peeta the night before the Quarter Quell, she tells him and they have sex. In D13, she finds she got pregnant, and while she’s sad that Peeta isn’t with her, she’s happy to be carrying Peetas child. Because should he not return to her, she has a piece of him with her to love. It also gives her the strength to try to rescue Peeta.
