After battling the New York subway system — which you’re pretty sure had a vendetta against you — you’d made it to your office later than you’d liked. There had been no time to stop and grab a coffee and breakfast from your favourite little cafe near your office, so you’d have to contend with a stale granola bar that you were hoping was still buried in your desk behind some notebooks and a coffee from the communal kitchen.

“You’re late,” your assistant whispered as you walked in.

“I know, I know.”

“There’s someone in your office.”

“What? Who?” You were certain you didn’t have any meetings until at least 11am, you glanced towards your office where you could make out the shape of someone sitting in front of your desk.

“Congressman Barnes, he’s even more handsome since the last time he came by.”

“Aren’t you married, Dorris?” You smirked, she’d been nursing a crush on him since he’d last stopped by your office.

“Barry doesn’t need to know,” Dorris waved her hand dismissively, smirking as she answered her phone.

While it wasn’t uncommon to find someone waiting for you in your office most mornings, most visitors didn’t come bearing a steaming hot cup of coffee, “You join a new team and you’ve given up on the suits? You’ll break Giuseppe’s heart.”

“He’ll live, I’m sure you’ve referred other senators to his tailoring and I’m pretty sure you get a kick back on each suit he makes,” the man chuckled as he watched you walk around your desk and take a seat. “Hi kid.”

“What do you need Barnes?” You lean forward, resting your head on your hands, offering a wry smile, “I doubt you’re here to discuss the finer points of haberdashery?”

“I’m here to offer you a job,” Bucky says, placing your coffee in front of you.

“Last time you offered me a job, you wanted me to help you impeach Valentina de Fontaine,” you eyed Bucky as you took a sip of your coffee. Valentina had been a little too good at covering her tracks for anything solid to actually stick, the hunt for anything incriminating had dragged on for months. “Is this caramel?” you asked, savouring your first mouthful of good coffee.

“Of course,” Bucky sighed, running a hand through his hair. “This time it’s a little less…political. The team needs an assistant, someone to handle the public relations.”

“Really? You were all doing so well,” you smirked. “I saw the Wheaties boxes.”

“Alexei’s idea.”

“The Russian guy?”

“It was his dream,” Bucky shrugs. As he stands he places a file on your desk, “Think about it”

You watched him leave your office before picking up the file, it contained a dossier for every member of the Thunderbolts.

Bucky’s was first, heavily redacted as you’d expected. You knew a little of his past, or at least what he had shared with you while you had helped him with his campaign, but he had kept the details of what had happened while he was under control of Hydra to himself.

John Walker. Former decorated army ranger and Captain America for a short time before the murder of a civilian in a public setting led to his less than honourable discharge.

Yelena Belova. Former Red Room trained assassin with the Black Widow, working as a contract killer for Valentina before the Thunderbolts.

Alexei Shostakov. The Red Guardian, Captain America’s counterpart in Russia. The one behind the Wheaties box…and ‘encouraging’ people in supermarkets to buy them.

Ava Starr. S.H.I.E.L.D operative turned mercenary who could phase through objects due to a constant state of molecular disequilibrium. You made a mental note to look that up later.

And…Bob? You turned Bob’s, Robert Reynolds’s, part of the file over to find that the page in your hand, containing next to no information about the man, was it. There was a picture — he was cute in a boy next door kind of way — and a few sparse details about the man but nothing more.

You quickly closed the file as your office door slammed open, your 11am meeting had finally arrived. Some trust fund baby who wanted you to fix his public image to keep him out of prison. He was charged with several assault counts, all of which he argued were the other person's fault and daddy’s money had brought him two hours of your time.

After his time was up, he had offered you his number like it was some kind of reward. You declined and dialed a familiar contact.

“Barnes? When do you need me to start?”

Yelena Belova

I think Yelena listens to rock or more specifically rock bands with female lead singers. Such as Paramore, Evanescence, Halestorm, Flyleaf, Garbage, P!nk, No Doubt, new Linkin Park stuff.

She doesn't mind other rock but she mostly sticks with those artists, everything else is in shared playlists or in passing more than sitting down a listening to it.

Bucky Barnes

Goes without saying, even he admitted to it in TFATWS, he's a 40s/50s music kinda guy. For those who don't quite get the idea, think of the video game series Fallout and listen to the pitboy radios. That's the genre Bucky likes.

To name specifics, The Ink Spots, Ella Fitzgerald, The Andrew Sisters, Louis Armstrong, Johnny Cash, etc. Again, any Fallout video game radio is basically this man's taste in music.

John Walker

Divorced dad rock... Hear me out.

He is a divorced dad so... if the shoe fits.

So that would be like Linkin Park, Nickelback, Staind, 3 Doors Down, basically any rock band from the 2000s. I will add Five Finger Death Punch and Metallica as well due to him being in the military. As someone who has a lot of family on both sides who have been in the military, everyone in my family listens to Metallica and Five Finger Death Punch.

Alexei Shostakov

So yeah, Alexei listens to Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, etc.

Ava Starr

I think Ava would be into more piano or folk-ish style of music, things that are easy to listen to. It's easy on the ears and that's mostly what she's here for. So even though there's not full on specific artist I can think of, some of Ed Sheeran's work comes to mind, and Mitski does too.

Easy and pretty sounds are probably what she prefers more in music, stuff that often give people chills.

Robert "Bob" Reynolds

I firmly believe Bob is a genuine "listens to everything" guy but he does have a favorite genre, and that is 80s music.

I can 1000% see him jamming to Take On Me or Never Gonna Give You Up. You see it too, don't lie. Literally anything that came from the 80s that got extremely popular/any 80s song they would play in movies and TV shows is his favorite genre.

“Can I help you, ladies?”

You open the passenger side and get out of the car. Nat follows after turning off the engine. She walks up behind you and grabs hold of your pinky.

“Ah don’t mind the dog” the woman yells at her dog recognising your hesitation to approach the porch. “Get back in the house” she commands holding the screen door open as it obediently enters the home. “It’s all right. Come in, darling. His bark is worse than his bite.” The woman steps off her porch and walks closer to you and Nat.

“We’re really sorry to bother you” you say stepping towards the kindly old lady. She pushes her glasses further up her nose.

“My name is Natalia” she offers stepping up from behind you still holding onto your little finger. You smile hearing her use that name. “I used to live in this house with my parents and little sister ages ago. We, this is my girlfriend Y/N,” she bumps you with her shoulder and you give a shy wave, “we were driving through the city and got curious. Would it be alright if we just looked around a little?” she stumbles uncharacteristically over her words, afraid the lady would decline. 

“Really? What were your parents’ names?”

“Alexei Shostakov? Melina Vostokoff?”

The lady hums to herself contemplating. “I don’t seem to remember those names” she laughs to herself before continuing, “I’ve been living here for over 20 years now and It’s hard to imagine anyone lived here before”.

“We really don’t want to be a bother” you quickly add taking a half step backwards. 

“No no dear” the lady steps back onto her porch and holds the screen door open inviting you and Nat inside. “Go ahead and look around. Take your time. I’ll be inside folding some laundry.”

Nat walks first into the house pulling you by the finger. She thanks the lady who disappears into the laundry room. You look at Nat and give her a mischievous smile.

“Ok that was almost too easy,” she smirks leading you around the house. You walk around the house and into a white dining area attached to a big back porch at the rear of the building.

“This is very nice” you remark running your finger along the cold marble worktop. “Oh! Is that where the swing you and Yel used to play at was?” you point towards an old shed next to a row of well manicured rose bushes. 

“Mmhmm” she nods. “Come on I wanna show you something” she slides the back door open and leads you out into the yard. Your finger still tucked safely in her hand she leads you through a corral past a large barn to the right of it. You imagine the fun Nat and Yelena used to get up to. She leads you through some bushes and you feel like you’re trespassing even though you knew you had permission to be there. Finally she slows her pace to a stop. She points to a clearing and starts tugging you towards a large oak tree. Running her fingers over the gnarly bark she smiles fondly. 

“Look” she says and you squint noting the very faint “N & Y” etched into its bark. You place a quick kiss on her cheek as she smiles fondly at the marks she carved into the tree all those years back.

“You know, I could live with you in a place like this and be happy.”

“Oh yea?” 

“Yup” she answers popping the P playfully. 

You turn her towards you and pull her into a kiss. You cup your hands on her cheeks and hold her close. She smiles into the kiss. When you pull away you run your thumbs over her cheeks noting how rosy they’ve become. 

“Wanna get something to eat?” Nat says resuming her previous position of your finger safely grasped in her hand.

You raise an eyebrow at her and she laughs. “Stop! I didn’t mean that. I meant a hamburger.”

“Sure babe, let’s go get a hamburger.”

Chapter 14 - Red Guardian

Summary: The Winter Soldier must confront the Red Guardian to save Bec.

The Winter Soldier made his way to the adjacent building, ascending the fire escape with little effort. He hoisted himself over the side, hearing his metal arm shift into place as he pulled himself up. 

Finding the M249 he had stashed there several nights before and concentrating through the scope, he scanned the area. His breath caught when he thought he spotted Bec's long blonde hair, but it was only a student.

Becoming increasingly frustrated, he stowed the weapon across his back and jumped from the roof, landing in a crouch that scared a young couple who had been sitting on a nearby bench, deep in what appeared to be a philosophical discussion. 

He ignored their gasps of surprise and took off into a run in the direction of the apartment. He halted when his cellphone rang. Bec's name appearing across the top of the screen. 

He nearly fumbled to answer it, the metal of his finger scratching across the surface. "Bec, where are you?" he asked, his voice a desperate knot of fear and anxiety. 

"Bucky, my boy, good to hear your voice." It certainly wasn't Bec's, but he recognized the deep vibrato immediately. Alexei Shostakov, the Red Guardian. "It's been a long time. 25 years give or take." 

"Where is she? Is she hurt?" 

"Nice to speak with you too," Alexei said, laughing over the line, a sarcastic note that made James want to punch through the device. "She's fine. A little bruised, but still breathing...for now." 

"Let her go." 

"You know I can't do that. You need her, and unfortunately, I need you. So I suppose we are at an impasse, unless you are willing to turn yourself over. Then I might be prepared to deliver an exchange." 

James could've sworn he heard a train echo in the background over the phone. He paused, moving the phone away and listened. His hearing along with several other senses had improved after HYDRA had injected him with the super serum, but he couldn't hear anything that sounded similar to what was coming from the other end.  

He returned the phone to his ear. "What do you propose?" he asked, clenching the phone so tightly, he heard the plastic cover groan under his grip. 

"Interesting. This female must have a strange hold on you. First you tell her your real name, then you're so willing to give yourself over for her. I'd say you might have a little crush, huh Buck."  

He didn't recognize the name Alexei kept using, but it made his stomach churn a little, an undecipherable reaction. "Don't call me that." 

"Whatever you say, brother. Meet me in an hour at Cișmigiu Park and we can chat. I look forward to seeing you. It's been way too long." 

He shoved the phone into his pocket, a snarl of frustration rippling through his gritted teeth. He checked his watch. The park was only a kilometer from the University, giving him plenty of time to stop at the apartment. 

Alexei was getting up there in age but not to be underestimated. They had crossed paths several times before, and while The Winter Soldier knew his skills and strength were superior, The Red Guardian had always left a mark or two. 

And this time, Alexei had a hand he could play.

James frantically gathered every weapon he had hidden around the apartment into the black backpack he had taken with him from HYDRA. He hadn't anticipated needing to don his Winter Soldier gear on this particular mission, but he strapped on his tactical vest, clipping the gun holster over his shoulder. 

He checked his watch again, loaded his M249, and left for Cișmigiu Park. 

The sky outside was a dull grey; large storm clouds rolling in. James checked the cache of combat knives along his hip and down his thigh. He slowed when he rounded the corner to the park. It was pretty much empty with the impending storm, but he spotted Alexei alone on a small bridge that extended across an idyllic pond. A strange juxtaposition if there ever was one.

Alexei waved, a goofy smile on his face. He was never the soundest of mind, but he looked even more manic than the last time James had seen him. 

"Where is she?" James called out.

"She's safe. For now." 

James approached the bridge, stopping where the path met the bridge's cobble stones. Alexei leaned against the railing, resting his elbows in a position of relaxation. 

"It's been a long time. You look...older," Alexei said, a deep laugh following. "I suppose a century will do that to a person."

"I could say the same about you," James replied, resting his hand over his hip. 

"You flatter me. Anyways, let's not beat around the bush. You for her, agreed?" 

"You know that's not going to happen," James said, pulling his M249 from over his shoulder and cocking it. 

Alexei moved off the railing, lifting his hands in the air. "Woah, woah. Take it easy, Bucky." 

"Stop calling me that." Before he finished speaking, James shot the rifle, the bullet pinging off the railing just inches from Alexei's thigh. 

"Now, now, now. I thought maybe we could play nice, but I guess not." Alexei barreled toward James, giving him little time to react, but Alexei was slower than the last time they had come face to face. James had just enough time to step out of the way, slicing through Alexei's shoulder with the combat knife he had withdrawn from his hip. 

The two collided, James' rifle was knocked from his grip as Alexei struck him with the back of his elbow, stunning him slightly and giving Alexei enough time to wrap his bicep around James' throat until he was behind him, pulling his neck into a chokehold. 

James bent back, giving himself enough space to slip out of Alexei's grasp. He twisted in one fluid motion, bashing his forehead into Alexei's face. He heard Alexei's nose crunch and several teeth spewed from his mouth. They both watched the teeth fall and bounce around on the ground. 

Alexei laughed, blood bubbling around his lips. James stepped back, giving himself enough time to reassess. But Alexei was one step ahead, spitting the blood dribbling down his chin straight into James' eyes.

James felt a stabbing pain in his gut right below his ribs. He yelled out, grabbing at the open wound now gushing warm liquid down his front. The blood slicked his normal hand, making it hard for him to keep hold on his knife. As he managed to take in a breath, staggering back, Alexei bashed his fist into James' shoulder, knocking his metal arm nearly out of the surgically built socket.  

While James moved to knock the arm back in place, Alexei managed to get in a kick to James' knee sending him stumbling. 

"I can do this all day, old timer," Alexei chided. 

James quickly took inventory; his stomach was bleeding heavier now, which made him think that Alexei had punctured his liver. His metal arm wasn't working properly, the mechanisms connecting the limb to his shoulder and therefore to his brain had most likely been knocked out of place. 

"Ah, perhaps you are starting to realize the small predicament you have found yourself in," Alexei said, pushing against James' good shoulder until he was on his knees in front of the Red Guardian.  

A glint of black chrome, caught James' eye. His M249 was a few feet away, behind Alexei's left foot, but with his metal arm malfunctioning, he would need to grab it with his right hand. 

Alexei landed an upper cut, snapping James' head back. He kept himself up, bracing himself with his good arm. And that's when he heard it, a loud shot ring out. He waited for pain to spread through him again, but none came. He looked up to find Alexei falling over, his body as limp as the dead. 

James scrambled back to avoid Alexei, slipping onto his back. He could hear that Alexei was still breathing despite looking like a corpse next to him; the super soldier serum coursing through him would be able to recover his body even after a bullet to the back, which he could now see near Alexei's hip bubbling with blood. 

James rolled onto his side, taking in ragged breaths, each one feeling a claw was running across the gash in his gut. He knew he wasn't going to die, but he also knew he wasn't exactly in the best situation. Alexei could wake up at any moment, granted he was also in pretty bad shape, and not to mention the possible threat from whoever had made that shot. 

He closed his eyes briefly, focusing on his heart beating and taking in enough air that he would need to push himself to his feet. 

"Shit, James." The curse was both music to his hears and a shock to his system. He peaked through his heavy eyelids to see Bec standing over him. She looked mostly unharmed save a small bruise around her throat and his M249 was still clutched in her shaking hands. "Can you stand?" 

He groaned, trying and failing to roll over on his front so he could prop himself up. 

"It's ok. I got you."

hey there demons, its me, ya boy. I would honestly die for Natasha and I’m so excited to write her with you all. but now lets get into a little backstory:

Natasha was actually born Natalia Alianovna Romanova in 1928. Before she could even turn a year old, the building her family lived in was set on fire. Before the flames consumed her family, Nat’s mother threw her down to a soldier attempting to help. The man, Ivan Petrovich, decided to take the baby in and raise her as his own.

Once WWII began in 1938, Natalia was brought to a ‘special’ military school to study at only ten years old. Unbenounced to her, Logan Howlett was working undercover at the school and helped train her for two years before he killed the headmaster. Afterwards she was relocated but inevitably ran away in want to find her father.

The skills she’d learned as a child with her father and at the school helped her survive until she was reunited with Ivan. Instead of sending her back to another school in Moscow, he finished her training himself to make her a soldier.  Natalia proceeded to fight with him in WWII. At only sixteen, she fell in love with a fellow soldier and became pregnant, but when she gave birth it was stillborn.

In 1956, her father was mortally wounded and in attempt to save his life - Natalia took a deal for the both of them to be turned into a living weapons. Injected with a serum, she stopped aging and was placed into the Red Room for training where she met the Winter Soldier.

Later, Natalia was given a cover story, a Bolshoi Ballerina, was implanted into her mind and she was sent to meet a high ranking Soviet Union Pilot Alexei Shostakov, whom she was to marry. Despite the feeling that her memories felt wrong, it took time before she could reverse the programming and remember who she was. This mainly occurred the on her next meeting with the Winter Soldier which led her to work with SHIELD on uncovering her true memories.

She continued to serve the KGB for some time but still crossed paths with SHIELD and the Avengers numerous times. Eventually Clint Barton was sent to take her out but instead choose to help her and took her back to SHIELD to give her another chance. From there she attempted to join the organization, and while it took a long time to gain trust and recognition, eventually she was considered a valuable asset and became and an Avenger.
