Gonna ask you a difficult question! How would you characterize/handle the Marauders if you were doing a show of that era? Like how would you portray them? I personally think I could probably make Lupin and Sirius sympathetic even while portraying them as a enabler and bully respectively but I would struggle a lot with dealing with James.

Ok let’s see:

James: I would portray him as being a spoiled brat, but I would also portray him as someone who follows and not lead. When I first read the books I didn’t get the idea that James was the leader of the group…Sirius was. Think about SWM…James didn’t have Snape on his mind until Sirius was bored, the only reason he started messing with Snape was to please Sirius. I would also portray James as someone who got aggressive when things doesn’t go his way, it makes sense considering he was 100% wiling to hex Lily because she didn’t agree (or pretended she didn’t agree) with his treatment of Severus

Sirius: I would give him so many layers omg! I would make sure to portray some kind trauma, he didn’t have a good home life and even if I don’t like him I can’t erase that or downplay it (like Snaters do to Severus). I feel like it has a big role to play in the type of person he is. He hates his Slytherin family and doesn’t want to be like them, yet the only thing that differs him from them is his house and the fact that he isn’t a death eater…he’s just as evil as them but he’s in denial…he has some kind of superiority complex due to him being in Gryffindor and I feel like he thinks he can do no wrong because of it. That’s why he gives no fucks about bullying and almost killing Snape: he doesn’t see him as another human..he’s just another Slytherin scum. I feel like this plays into his treatment of Remus too, he’s a werewolf, not human, therefore below him..but he’s a Gryffindor and a friend nonetheless. Sirius is complex asf

Remus: I would focus a lot on his lycanthropy and how he feels about himself. I don’t think he was completely happy in the friendship he had with the Marauders but they were all he had and they did do a lot for him, but the bullying and the sideways crack Sirius always made about his condition and how they took him into villages and endangered people…the “prank”…I would definitely portray these things but I would make it known that the only reason he didn’t stop them is because he didn’t wanna lose his friends. Coward.

Peter: Oh god…He’d be sneaky asf. The only reason he even hangs out with the Marauders is because (in the most overlooked words of Sirius) they were “the biggest bullies in the playground.” I would portray him to be the “enabler side character” but I’d definitely shift a lot of attention on him towards the end of the series, because he had A LOT to do with the whole Voldemort situation and I feel like his potential is overlooked within the Marauders community

Lily: 😒….She disgusts me. She never REALLY cared about Severus, not IMO. He was her guide to the wizarding world, that’s it. She pretended to care that he was bullied because that’s the right thing to do but I feel like she quickly came to terms with the fact that she truly didn’t care. I feel like she fell for James while this bullying was going on but rejected him in attempt to keep her morals (if she even had any) and that’s the reason she defended them and gaslit Snape after the “prank.” She told him he should be grateful to his bullies for “saving his life” (although I’m almost completely sure James only did it to save their ass, not snapes) and basically made it seem like Snape was worse than them because “at least they don’t use dark magic” 😐. Lily is definitely that character who struggles with morality.

finally see what it means to be living (captain marvel, carol/maria, i really hit the zeitgeist with this one i think i was something like the fifth fic in the ship tag)

do whatever you think (the magnus archives, this series is actually #2-7, then #8 #9 and #11 for me so i’m going to cheat a bit)

standing in a world of my own (daredevil, matt/foggy/karen, another zeitgeist hit! really miss writing for daredevil actually... it’s a perennial fave)

a winding road that stretches towards the truth (iron man, tony/rhodey, i STILL don’t know when this got so many kudos. i swear i looked away when it was at 100 and suddenly it ended up here)

where the long shadows grow (star trek aos, kirk prime/spock prime, thank god some people are checking the prime kirkspock tag is all i’m saying!)

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

i don’t really Do angsty endings... possibly a blanket of stars just because i ended it on something of a cliffhanger and then completely zoned out of rnm for long enough that i forgot where i was going with it. there was definitely the intention of fixing things but then i just... did not do that. and now the show is on s3 and i’m over a season behind! life comes at you fast

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

where the long shadows grow, because it reunited kirk prime and spock prime and they DESERVE TO BE HAPPYYYY. i’m a complete sucker for presumed dead/back from the dead stories, actually, so on a similar theme i have two (TWO) daredevil fics which follow the trope, one about ray coming back post-s2 (might never be normal again) and one about foggy and matt reuniting post-endgame (in the corner, taking up space). this is the only time i will ever acknowledge endgame ever again

7. Do you write crossovers? If so, what is the craziest one you’ve written?

i do write crossovers! in fact i am often roundly mocked by my friends for the increasingly esoteric nature of my crossovers. way back in secondary i wrote a twilight/labyrinth crossover where angela was sarah and jareth’s daughter  because i had a massive crush on a girl who liked both twilight and labyrinth. however, since that has been comprehensively scrubbed from the internet, i think my craziest crossover is probably part three of ‘traced upon the skies’, already an esoteric crossover of rivers of london and hot fuzz, when i added in a crossover with the horror movie ‘the ritual’ just because i wanted rafe spall’s character to be happy 

8. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

EXTREMELY rarely and only with extreme embarrassment. i will not be any more specific than that

9. Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

i used to really struggle with doing this, to the point that i had over 300 comments just. lingering in my inbox unanswered. so i decided to give those up and just commit to answering them from then on, which has been working fairly well for about a year and a half now. i love getting comments but i get overwhelmed really easily and struggle with replying in a way which feels meaningful without getting in my head about it! 

10. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

yes lmao it was for a harry potter fic on ff.net where harry got sorted into hufflepuff instead of gryffindor. it wasn’t a very good fic but i think the fact it was clearly written by an 11 year old should have scared off at least some of the less flattering comments.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

i don’t... think so? i don’t know how i’d find out to be honest, my vanity googling is rarely very effective

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

yes! as bronze may be much beautified (skyfall, mallory/bond) got translated into chinese, i was extremely pleased. i think it’s mandarin but the ao3 page for the translation doesn’t say and my mandarin is.................. extremely poor

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

also yes! me and jess little-smartass have written a lot together, although only our star trek/les mis series has been published, more’s the pity. we spent a lot of les mis fandom time workshopping aus and we were always extremely correct about all of it, imo

14. What’s your all time favourite ship to write for?

oh god. i think probably kirk/spock, although there’s some recency bias to that since i reread space manhattans recently and was reminded of my love for them. i really like writing jon/martin but i’ve mostly done that from outsider pov which is a bit different to writing shipfic, i think. joe/nicky from tog was also something i really liked writing but i struggle with plotting longer fic with them

15. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

i recently went through my abandoned fic folder so i actually have a few options for this. the obvious choice would be ‘any of the hockey ones’ but i did delete most of those just for my sanity. more recently i started writing a vaguely smutty pre-the thing mac/fuchs fic for alex @milkdrinker5000 which i really WANT to finish but am struggling with. most obscure answer (even beyond the thing) and most likely to remain unfinished is the insanely in depth post-tog booker/copley fic i had planned out back in about october. i wrote a good 6-7k of that one and then i realised it was going to be, like, difficult, and decided if i was going to put that much work into something it may as well be the novel im meant to be writing

16. What are your writing strengths?

once a friend told me i had an excellent facility for dialogue and ive thought about it every time i write ever since. i love writing dialogue and i think i’m good at knowing what sounds ic and what is right out. 

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

one of the things i struggled with for a really long time, and honestly still have trouble with, is depicting action in words. once i wrote a hockey fic which featured multiple hockey games and i spent probably four times as much effort editing those to make sense and be interesting that i’ve ever done on a talkier scene.

18. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

i’ve done it but only when i knew more or less what i was talking about - i did italian at school so i felt confident using it for nicky in something particular and real. i try not to italicise when i drop in words from other languages, which is what i usually do when i’m using a language i haven’t studied in depth (for example, joe’s use of arabic in some of my fic), and to only use words which i’ve heard used by native speakers in that context. i think if you don’t feel confident using another language, generally speaking, you shouldn’t do it. and for god’s sake don’t use google translate for a full sentence

19. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

harry potter on the newsround chatboards. ariana lovegood-longbottom my sweet child

20. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

this used to be an easy question because hands down the fic i was proudest of on posting it was i’ll be seeing you. i spent a year and a half on research and writing! but these days i do cringe a little at my hockey fic, and i think i’m prouder of some of my shorter works. let’s do a curveball and say layer on layer, down on down, which is my favourite of my rnm fics and the one i like most from a narrative voice perspective. getting michael right was stressful and i’m still proud i got it down for a TIME LOOP FIC, my absolute favourite trope

May I have more info on Lyra pretty please with a cherry on top!!! I’m so excited to learn more about and her story and her relationship with Remus! (I love the tried and true Marauders fancast you use - I used them all the time as kid and still love it).

hi nonnie! first of all, i’m so glad that you like the popular marauders fancast! i know a lot of people aren’t a huge fan of it anymore and want to use other actors/actresses ( which is completely valid ), but i genuinely love the fancast i used sm like i couldn’t see anyone else fitting them imo. so it makes me happy that someone else also agrees so thank you :)

now,,, the juicy details. lyra is what you’d expect as a slytherin. she’s very ambitious, driven, and cunning. but slytherins are also fiercely loyal to those they care about, will kill/die for their loved ones, and a natural leaders. i know slytherins get a bad rep, which sucks, but it doesn’t mean all of them are evil which is a big point in her story ( and other stereotypes i will be breaking in this fic and another one i have brewing ). it’s comes into play between her and remus bc the dynamic between a slytherin and a gryffindor is so interesting. they share similar traits, but they achieve it in different ways, which i think is really cool and a nice balance between them.

just like the other marauders, aka james, sirius, and peter, lyra is an animagus, but a legal one. now, i’m not 100% familiar about the rules when it comes to being an animagus in canon ( but it’s also my story so fuck canon ) but there will be times where lyra will take her animagus/patronus form, which is a white-haired fox, and do her best to keep remus company during a full moon. she also knows the wolfsbane potion more than any of potion she’s learned. she is very knowledgable when it comes to potions, but nothing compares to how well she remembers that specific potion. lyra knows it as if it was embedded in her brain and that’s how much she loved and cared for remus. it makes me soft i love them a lot.

Idk of you know, but i feel that people are often arguing that Dan isn't a Gryffindor he's a Slytherin, and he actually avoided the question in a recent liveshow, but do you know why people say he's a Slytherin. Phil is clearly a Hufflepuff, but I cant seem to get a read on Dan to figure out what house he is. Since you're my go to Phan information source, I was wondering what your thoughts on this are.

I’m not a HP expert, but I will do my best to answer this haha.

Personally, I think this pretty much comes down to the age old Slytherin/Gryffindor internal conflict that most people have when they’re sorted into either house, including Harry in the books. The way I see it, JK Rowling intentionally made the traits of those two houses overlap so that there would be a more interesting character arc for Harry and his struggle with whether to become ‘good’ or ‘bad’. However, as we now know, Slytherin is not a completely ‘evil’ house (as proved by characters such as Snape, Draco, Slughorn) and Gryffindor is not a completely ‘good’ house (as proved by characters such as Peter Pettigrew, Dumbledore - to an extent). The traits of each house blur against one another, making it difficult for the Sorting Hat to choose where to place someone (like Harry) who shares some of both sets (or maybe all) of the traits. 

This literary device has, very cleverly imo, been carried over into Pottermore when you take the quiz to see which house you are. If you are more inclined to Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw answers, then this is much clearer, and there is no confusion as to where you should be sorted, but (as I have experienced) if you are prone to picking Slytherin/Gryffindor answers, the quiz will often present you with the opportunity to choose between the houses as Harry did himself. 

What I’d assume about Dan is that he took the quiz when he was a lot younger, and probably ended up with the option to choose between Slytherin and Gryffindor OR he got Gryffindor when he was younger, and took it again more recently and got Slytherin.

Either way, he’s now unsure about where he belongs, and is hesitant about labelling himself as one or the other because a) they both have negative connotations nowadays,  b) he doesn’t like being labelled, c) he’s already stated that he’s one thing and doesn’t want to double back on his claim especially if he’s not 100% sure.

Let’s look at the traits of each house.

Slytherin: Resourcefulness, Cunning, Ambition, Determination, Self-Preservation, Fraternity, Cleverness

Gryffindor: Bravery, Nerve, Chivalry, Courage, Daring

Now, which of these groups of characteristics sounds most like the 2017 version of Dan Howell, who is comfortable enough in himself to accept who he is? 

Dan Howell, in 2017, has admitted that he is an introvert (Self-preservation, daring). He prefers smaller, close-knit friendships, and likes to spend time indoors (Fraternity). He has teased us with several of his big plans and ideas for the future, and hinted that he is working on lots of projects that we will get to see soon (ambition, cleverness). 

There are more things I could list of course, and I’m not trying to say that Dan isn’t brave, or courageous or anything. I’m not even trying to argue that he’s particularly ‘cunning’ or interested in ‘self-preservation’ - I’m just making a point that there are traits he has that are very Slytherin-based, perhaps a little more so that Gryffindor. So, if Dan did at some point re-take the sorting test on Pottermore more recently, and if he did get Slytherin this time around, it could very well have confused him to the point where he doesn’t even know himself anymore. 

Essentially, I think the boy is confused. He might have dismissed the idea of being sorted into Slytherin in the past because there is a lot of stigma around the house, and (especially as he’s a ‘personality’) he might not have wanted to seem, well... evil. lol. 

Personally, I reckon the boy is a Slytherin. He undoubtedly has some Gryffindor in him, but as the books make clear - nobody is one house through and through. The lines of separation between the houses blur a lot, so it’s perfectly reasonable that there’s confusion. 

You know, I can’t help but think that this whole conundrum Dan is (maybe) going through in regards to how best to label himself is very reminiscent of another sort of label... one that has less of a fictional aspect. Can anyone else see that too?? Haha... hmmm.
