hello. you left a neon pink post-it with pgs 194-359 due 9/12 in the book, by the way. it is now May 23rd and the library's printer is running out of ink. it jammed and tore my passport application. one of the librarians dutifully blacked out all my information (front and back!) before proceeding to use every unmarred inch as scrap paper.

i think maybe our (plural, inclusive) lives are connected. all of them. i have been thinking a lot about borrowing. about how people move through the world in waves, filling in the same spaces. i have probably stood on the same subway platform as you. we held the same book. all of us stand in the same line at the grocery, at the gas station. how many feet have stood washing dishes in my kitchen?

i hope you are doing well. the pen you used was a nice red, maybe a glitter pen? you have loopy, curling handwriting. i sometimes wonder if it is true that you can tell a personality by the shape of our letters. i'm borrowing my brother's car. he's got scrangly engineer handwriting (you know the one). it's a yellow-orange ford mustang boss. when i got out of the building, some kids were posing with it for a selfie. i felt a little bird grow in me and had to pause and pretend to be busy with my phone to give them more time for their laughing.

i have a habit of asking people what's the last good book you read? the librarian's handwriting on the back of my smeared-and-chewed passport application says the glass house in small undercase. i usually go for fantasy/sci fi, but she was glowing when she suggested it. i found your post-it on page 26, so i really hope you didn't have to read up to 359 in that particular book. i hope you're like me and just have a weird "random piece of trash" "bookmark" that somehow makes it through like, 58 books.

i wish the concept of soul mates was bigger. i wish it was about how my soul and your soul are reading the same work. how i actually put down that book at the same time you did - page 26 was like, all exposition. i wish we were soul mates with every person on the same train. how magical to exist and borrow the same space together. i like the idea that somewhere, someone is using the shirts i donated. i like the idea that every time i see a nice view and say oh gosh look at the view, you (plural, inclusive) said that too.

the kids hollered when i beeped the car. oh dude you set off the alarm, oh shit is she - dude that's her car!! one was extremely polite. "i like your car, Miss. i'm sorry we touched it." i said i wasn't busy, finish up the pictures. i folded your post-it into a paper crane while i waited. i thought about how my brother's a kind person but his handwriting looks angry. i thought about how for an entire year i drove someone to work every day - and i didn't even think to ask for gas money. my handwriting is straight capital letters.

i thought about how i can make a paper crane because i was taught by someone who was taught by someone else.

the kids asked me to rev the engine and you know i did. the way they reacted? you would have thought i brought the sun from the sky and poured it into a waterglass. i went home smiling about it. i later gave your post it-turned-bird to a tiny child on the bus. she put it in her mouth immediately.

how easy, standing in your shadow, casting my own. how our hands pass over each other in the same minor folds. i wonder how many of the same books you and i have read. i wonder how many people have the same favorite six songs or have been in the same restaurant or have attended the same movie premier. the other day i mentioned the Book Mill from a small town in western massachusetts - a lot of people knew of it. i wonder if i've ever passed you - and didn't even notice it.

i hope whatever i leave behind makes you happy. i hope my hands only leave gentle prints. i hope you and i get the same feeling when the sun comes out. soulmates across all of it.

Gabriel Catren and Meta-Transcendental Philosophy

Gabriel Catren's project (as well as the work of Francois Laruelle) represents a continuation and radicalization of the Kantian/Copernican turn in philosophy that can be called meta-transcendental. “[If we read Laruelle not as a “non-philosopher” but as a meta-transcendental philosopher], [i]t then becomes possible to re-interpret the term ‘decision’ in Laruelle’s work as a synonym for transcendental synthesis [...] In this regard, Laruelle can be interpreted as a kind of renegade Kantian whose internal subversion of transcendental idealism not only rehabilitates the possibility of transcendental realism but also provides Kantianism’s posthumous rejoinder to Hegelian idealism in all its guises [...]” Ray Brassier - Nihil unbound pg 134.If Kantian transcendental philosophy is an account of the conditions by which experience and knowledge are possible, then meta-transcendental philosophy is an account of not just the genesis of the conditions by which experience is possible but the genesis of all possible conditions of experience. Insofar as the practicalist Aristotelian/Fichtean/Kantian orientation subordinates intelligibility to sensibility and roots experience in sensible intuition and apperception (rather than the Hegelian account of the self-determination of normativity, in which sensibility is subordinate to intelligibility), it then follows that possible experience is concomitant with possible sensible intuition, and given that the conditions of sensible intuition cannot be self-determinate, experience can be determined in the last instance by an external entity or unilateral immanence rather than a self-determinate universal totality and thus engender a multiplicity of possible forms of experience in which human experience is but one transcendental perspective among many.

In Catren's rewriting of Christian trinitarianism, the multiplicity of transcendental perspectives or types, what he calls the transcendental landscape, is knit together into a collective patchwork subject by Eros, understood as a force of binding together and integration, which is primary over the force of Thanatos in Catren's inversion of Freud. "... the drive par excellence is no longer the death drive but the drive for life (Eros). The will to remain relegated to the impersonal life, far from taking the form of a death drive that pulls the individual back to the undifferentiated one, manifests as an erotic desire to engender and federate the separated living beings into higher forms of living unity." (Pleromatica -Pg 359) The weak point of Catren's book Pleromatica is that, due to Catren's yolking intelligibility to the sensible, the speculative import of the transcendental landscape is rendered absurd as alien transcendental types become empty abstractions we can know and say nothing about that mirror Hegel's description and critique of the thing in itself as "total emptiness, only described still as an ‘other-world’ the negative of every image, feeling, and definite thought".

Pioneer Girl, by Laura Ingllas Wilder

Okay, so I seem to have fallen down a rabbit hole of Little House on the Prairie. This book inspired me to read the very last book in the series, which made me curious about the one beforeand before I knew it, I'd read all of them in reverse order, and read one book written by Laura's daughter, Rose. All of this is to say the next few entries are going to have a frontier flare

This all started when I read Prairie Fires last year. An examination of Laura Ingllas Wilder's life, put into the context of what was happening in the culture, environment and economics of the time. Then, in June, I was in an Uber and an ad for a podcast looking at the cultural impact of LH came on. So I started listening to Wilder.

The podcast made me want to read Laura's own words, without the veil of fiction.

I used some Kindle points and got the autobiography that was the mine from which the Little House books were pulled.

The book takes us from when Laura was about three years old, the first time the family left the big woods in Wisconsin, (the time line in the books was altered) and headed to what is now Kansas, to the evening after she married Almanzo Wilder, in Des Met South Dakota when she was eighteen. Her life was fascinating! More than once I've heard her called a time traveler because she started out in a covered wagon and by the end of her life had seen the building of the railroads, cars, planes, radios, movies, available electricity, and more modern confidences that we take for granted.

I agree that she was something of a time traveler, but I honestly have a hard time thinking of her in the context of technological progress.

I think it's because she was so clearly in love with nature. The descriptions of everything from the sky, to the animals and land, are crafted as if she was trying to convey something that was a part of her. It's like the writing in the hatchet books, only without the melancholy that sometimes crept in in those books.

Oddly, the loving descriptions of the Prarie, the sky, and the animals is what hooked me, even though when I was little it was that amount of detail that bored me out of reading the books.

With annotations, the book clocked in at 900 pages in my kindle app. So unfortunately, I can't go into everything. A lot of things stand out to me though. Overall, Pioneer Girl was written for publication, yes, but also for Laura's daughter, Rose. It was written long after Charles Ingllas passed and also after the deaths of Caroline and sister Mary. Laura didn't want her father's stories lost, and clearly she didn't want the stories that made up her life with her family, lost.

There are asides to Rose, stating things that should be for her eyes only, or simply addressing her affectionately.

It was interesting to see what she wanted to leave out. The family's brush with scabies, was an understandable omission, but she also wanted left put a beautiful passage about wolves that she thought would sound to amazing to be true.

One part that was an odd read, was the events leading up to Mary going blind.

In the books, Mary's illness was a simple line of exposition. In the autobiography, it is described and it is heartbreaking. Especially when the moment the blindness was complete was detailed.

"The last thing Mary ever saw was the bright blue of Grace’s eyes as Grace stood holding by her chair, looking up at her." (Pg. 359, Kindle Edition).

Another big part that will come up in a later ramble, is the family 's time in Burr Oak Iowa. It wasn't a happy time and they faced things they never thought they would. This was left entirely out of the novels, and even in this book, it feels like she wants to get past it as fast as possible.

Since after reading this book I read the fiction, it was interesting to see so many episodes pop back up again, even just a tad altered, or somewhat reworked. Of course there were somethings in the novels that never happened. They are fiction, after all.

Laura had said that everything she wrote was true, but it wasn't the whole truth. And I feel like she was being honest. "True" in this case is less factual and more feeling. Like when you go somewhere and it feels like home. You may have never lived there, but the feeling is true. It would be more apt to say that Laura's writing is authentic. She captured the feelings she had while hopping from place to place, when the family struggled and when they made happy memories. I enjoyed it very much, and it will be referred to many, many times in the next few entries.

Ancillary Justice - DONE! And I loved it. Yay :D

Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky - 201 pg, read by Dec 27 for SFF book club. Really looking forward to this one! It'll be my first Tchaikovsky.

The Joy Luck Club - 352 pg, by early January for Book Salon. I somehow missed this one even though most of the schools in my school district assigned this growing up. Glad for the chance to catch up on it.

The Virgin Suicides - 250pg, by ??? for Book Salon. Honestly not sure if we'll ever have a meeting for this one, because the girl who picked it has been enormously flakey and I don't think anyone else liked the book. I may skip it.

The Saint of Bright Doors - 356pg by late January for NYC book club. This one is my pick! I got plenty of time for it though.

Non-Book Clubs

The Sunlit Man - 447 pg. I'm about halfway through this rn, and I'm expecting to finish in the next two or three days. I set this as personal required reading before starting Wind and Truth.

Wind and Truth - 1330 pg. STORMLIGHT BOOK 5 BABY. READ ASAP. OH GOD IT'S SO LONG. I'M SO HYPED.

The Melancholy of Untold History - 240 pg. I got this out of the library on a whim but I do want to get through it. At least it's short!

Ancillary Sword - 359 pg. The sequel to Ancillary Justice. Not time sensitive but I'm fired up to continue the series!

The Blade Itself - 515 pg. Yes I am still putting this one off. But I want to get to it sooner rather than later. I owe it to a friend. Probably won't read it until after Wind and Truth though.

The Raven Tower - An anne leckie fantasy book I picked up on audiobook. It's aight so far. No time pressure to get through it fast, which is nice, so it'll just be my walking-around audiobook for a while.

And then I have a small pile of other library books, plus some backlog on my kindle and from the recent book exchange with my SFF book club friends. All in all, really not too bad of a pile right now, especially with the holidays giving me some extra time to relax and read. The biggest blockage is just how soon I can get through Wind and Truth without compromising my other book club obligations, but thankfully three of my book clubs are either on break or between picks right now, so I have some time to breathe.
