So... 90s Kon's nightmare in YJ98 01??

Confusing. I've read a bit of Kon's 90s solo comics as well... but maybe I just don't get it?

Pls someone who's read Kon's 90s comic solo chime in. LIKE HELP.

it's supposed to be considered horrifying to Kon! He wakes up with a scream AND the box narrator is like, "The horror..." but I can't really see how this... would be horrifying in a meaningful way?

Im gonna TRY, but... it's not gonna be good.

Kon's back abruptly bursts out with fiery wings as he flies around metropolis alongside Superman.

He exclaims in confusion, only for Superman to chastise him.

It was inevitable, Superboy. That's what happens when you're so holier than thou...

....

So. According to nightmare Superman, Kon's fear is connected to being holier than thou. In comparison to who? And in what way? How does he try to prevent that fear???

And how are the wings a representation of fear? Is it using Icarus imagery? Or phoenix imagery?

It being icarus imagery is a lil weak...Because the wings are made of fire, not ON fire or melting from fire. But if it is,

Rather than a nightmare, it feels more like a weird dream for Kon but foreshadowing for the readers, especially when compared to Bart and Tim's nightmare.

With Icarus symbolism combined with the "holier than thou" expression: Kon is PLENTY prideful. He tends to think that his way is best, especially when it comes to what he considers "his specialty" when he deals with aliens and metas.

This is kept up throughout the next issues until the Apokolips—where his pride and ambition ARE LITERALLY his and his team's downfall via planetary crash. (Superboy 91, his letter to Sterling hurts so much, don't look at me)

So maybe his fear comes from confusion? Because he doesn't understand yet what this means for him.

Still... would that merit the narrator box to say, "the horror" and have Kon waking up in sweat with a shout in the next panel? CLEARLY, this dream stuff caused him horror!

Although... I guess his expression could also convey some confusion.

The phoenix imagery is shaky too, but maybe this one is more about his own fear of his place in the world?

He doesn't even have his own actual name yet. I'm referring to him as Kon right now, but at this time... he hasn't even been given that name yet! And in-universe, he's been in the outside world for at LEAST a year now.

He can't even age any older with him being stuck at 16.

Even more...

With pheonix being symbolism for the natural cycle of life and death... at times representing a break in that cycle by also being a symbol for immortality...

Maybe this is alluding to that one scene in "Mother of all Battles" where he half dreams slowly becoming alone with even his shadow leaving him. There he quotes peter pan, "to die would be an awfully big adventure." (Don't look at me I'm so sad)

He came to be as a replacement in the case of Clark's death. He was supposed to be the second stage of Superman, the one that comes after Clark kicked it. But Clark is alive, and Kon is here. He was Superman for a little bit, but now he'll never fulfill the purpose of a new reinvented Superman leaving him stranded outside the natural cycle of life and death, doomed to never age or change.

So what happens to someone like him stuck in limbo? What happens if he develops this holier-than-thou attitude that will keep him from relating to those around him when his existence is already SO out of the ordinary?

He'll burn. He'll be betrayed by his own attitude that is slowly becoming more and more isolating.

All that being said...

None of it FEELS RIGHT? Pull any thread here, and it ALL comes undone.

And I know it's just a comic and writing slips a lot, but I want a through line for Kon's character development in my brain. The closest to that though, would be him outgrowing his pride, i guess? I didnt read core four's Titans run fully or the issue where he dies, so I know I'm missing things here.

He seems much more careful and subdued after Apokolips, but I'm not sure if that carries into Titans/the Superboy Prime deatg.

TLDR: I dont get what Kon's nightmare means. Help.

Location: Outside Farthorpe Time: Dusk Mission: An Abominable Situation For: @phoenixashbringer

Caves are hallowed places on occasion. Places where life can be hidden and fostered, places of shelter. With the nip in the air and the crunch of the snow under her feet, Juniper is relieved when she comes across the opening off the road. It stings her to admit that she’s tired, off her game. Traveling alone is not something she’s used to, and the absence of her father by her side is something that weighs on her. Only one set of hands to hunt and gather, one set of eyes to lead the way, one set of ears to listen for trouble. It stings her to admit it, but she’s tired to her soul.

A few hours rest, she thinks. And then I can carry on to Farthorpe. She enters the cave with cautious steps, wary of wolves or bears. The cave is deep and smells of a den, of living things, but she can see no evidence of its inhabitants. No snuffles, no growls, no cubs yowling for a mothers embrace, and a coldness in the air that implies its been empty for a time. If she was better rested, she would have turned around and left again, ill at ease with the concept of being here if whatever inhabited these walls decided to return home. As it is, she’s tired enough that she takes a few more halting steps into the cave. 

It’s deep. It slopes downward and seems to go far, like the mouth of the world. Her footsteps echo, crunching against the ground, and with the singular sensation of the world falling out from under her, loose their grip. She hits the ground with a loud thud, glad that no one is around to see her. And here I thought I was supposed to be graceful. She struggles upright as she fights off her winded state, looking around for whatever it was that tripped her up. 

The next few moments pass as a flash and a blur, as her mistake settle heavily over her. She sees the bone she’s tripped on at the same moment that her ears pick up the shift in the air, the sound of a creature waking up from a deep sleep. The sound of a creature that may be hungry for more of its prey. She’s scrambling to her feet when the creature seems to raise from out of nowhere, and for a split second she stops, raising her hands in a gesture of peace. Her and her father rarely ever needed to do battle with a beast –– but this wasn’t a normal situation. She was food, and she was in its home. It moves faster than her tired mind can process, and she finds herself knocked swiftly back to her feet, doing her best in the situation to roll out of the way and under some semblance of cover. 

She is only partially successful in her efforts, the beast clawing at a leg and her head hitting hard against a jutting rock. The sound is ripped out of her, a grunt and a scream that she might have found shameful in the company of someone else. But there is no one here to impress with strength, and she lets herself feel the pain as loudly as she likes. With what strength and foresight she has left, she twists and unleashes the most powerful spell she can manage. A thunder-wave rushes through the cave, and the creature reels back from her. Its the space she needs to crawl her way further toward the opening of the cave, more embarrassingly loud pained sounds escaping her as she moves.

Entry 1

01/12/2022

At the moment I'm not entirely sure how the people of Teyvat measure time or indicate their timelines, so I've resorted to what I know. Anyway, I decided to keep a journal of my time on Teyvat, ( I probably should've started this when I got here, oh well). I'll have to back track later.

On the plains of the nation called “Monstadt”, I was investigating a disturbance in the area, tremors or something like it. My investigation led me to a Ley Realm, or what the residence call “Domains”, it was monster infested, they seemed agitated by some kind of energy in there. I had to deal with them to investigate further. The “Domain's” path was riddled with puzzle-like mechanisms, they weren't a challenge. I reached the innermost sanctum of the “Domain” to find a sort of corrupt Excavator Field Tiller, it was slightly smaller than what I'm used to, the people of Teyvat have it easy, "easy" being a relative term. Though this corruption didn't take away its ferocity.

The battle was long but not very exhausting, I figured I might as well learn as much as I could about this condition, but as I was about to end the fight, a giant pheonix took that pleasure, or more accurately, the one who launched the pheonix did, seems like I wasn't the only one interested in the disturbance. I thanked him for his assistance, and seeing as the problem was solved, we went our separate ways.

I recalled some adventurers talking about a city to the north of Monstadt, I hadn't been there so I decided to head there next to expand my map and to rest up. Along the way, I saw a giant tower of a tree, as I went for a closer look, I saw statue next to it. It surged with a rejuvenating energy as I stood next to it and I felt healthy again, as I was intrigued by the statute, I heard a melody coming from behind the tree. I went to check it out, and I saw a... a "bard"? I think that's what they were called. He greeted me... in song. He told me of the tree and the history it carried... in song. I attempted to leave, but he stopped me and asked where I was going, I told him. He told me he was happy to give me a tour of the city, I... agreed, reluctantly.

It was late though, so I suggested we do it tomorrow in the morning. He seemed to have an idea for where I could spend the night, but he insisted we go somewhere to "unwind" first. He showed me to what looked like a café or bar, I entered to find the same man from the Ley Real— Domain behind the counter. He introduced himself as Diluc, and the bard as Venti. Diluc is apparently the owner of a winery, thankfully he serves non-alcoholic drinks, I hate alcohol, Venti doesn't seem to mind it at all, he even ordered one for me before I could say anything.

I realised something about Venti that felted familiar, could it be he's like.... No, I'm probably just homesick, I'm almost starting to actually miss my sister's nagging, almost. I hope she isn't in too much trouble because of me.

I better sign off, I have to get answers.

Oldhammer Eldar round 01

Was feeling a bit listless so I thought it was time to delve into the ultrasonic cleaner and see what treasures were there. First cab off the rank, 2 rogue trader era Eldar scouts. They are small, compact little units compared with the modern stuff. Less detailed (or less minutia perspective dependent). But this definitly has its own charm.

Next up a bunch of Banshees apparently from the very end of Rogue Trader era. 2 of everything including the Exarch, cept for 1 pose which was missing. I wonder where that got to? If you hear tiny fierce screams in the night let me know.

From the early days of 2nd edition we have Jain Zar the banshee pheonix lord in all her, heavy as hell, metal glory. I also have the modern one in the collection awaiting a paint and it will be cool to eventually have them side by side.

Finally, also from 2nd edition, we have the Avatar of Khaine. So tiny by scale comparison to most modern 'big' sculpts. He is only his head taller then the banshees from the same era. But I definitly have ideas about how I want to eventually paint him.

Well that was fun, even if my skin is now lacking any natural oils due to Acetone and Alcohol. But there will be many more to come in later days.
