A post-Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing mayoral election would be so funny, and I think the best outcome is that Piper runs Nick’s entire campaign without his agreement and he wins.

Piper in Stakeout
(Her counterpart)
The list
Piper shakes her head.
She must stay awake.
She must not fall asleep now.
From one moment to the next, she hopes the meeting between two strangers will occur, and she will finally have her story.
She’ll have the story of the century.
Or rather, the second story of the century.
Or the third.
But whatever happens, she will have her story, and that's all that matters.
She wants her story. She wants to know who’s behind it. She doesn’t want to miss the unique opportunity she has to get this crucial information.
But again, her fingers become limp around her pencil, and her notebook almost escapes from her hands while her eyes close almost of themselves.
It’s not Nat’s fault. It’s not Nat’s fault—these things. It’s not the poor girl’s fault that she caught some kind of dysentery or gastro and drained herself every night for two days in the latrine. It’s not Nat’s fault that she had to take care of the poor, weak child, keep her hydrated, and monitor her sleep to make sure she has time to go to the bathroom at the first sign of symptoms indicating a need.
Piper knows that it’s not Nat’s fault, and she has no grudges against her younger sister.
But now, she’s got crucial information about a big case involving synths and high life in Diamond City, and a meeting will take place at midnight near the Back Street Apparel, and Piper unintentionally falls asleep in her hiding spot.
The exhaustion from two sleepless nights slowly catches up.
Piper tries to fight the tiredness and stay awake, but her eyes seem to be getting heavier. She rubs them and takes a deep breath.
No... stay awake... I need to see this… Wake up! Just a little more...
Her body is begging to rest, but her mind is begging to stay awake.
She tries to open her eyes again, but the lids are too heavy. The tiredness is slowly and gradually overpowering her.
A sudden noise jolts her awake.
For a moment, her mind is still lost in the haze of sleep. She has to blink several times to finally be able to focus, but the street before her is still completely empty. No sign of whatever was supposed to occur soon.
It's still empty...
Damn it... have I missed it?
Her eyes dart around, scanning the neighborhood to make sure she hasn't skipped anything.
But there's nothing except the silence and the darkness.
No one. No clues.
She feels like pulling her hair out of frustration.
She takes a deep breath to try to calm down a bit.
Come on, think. Did I miss something? They were supposed to meet here... But there's no one...
She glances around once more, hoping to see something, anything at all.
Damn it, where are they? This was my only chance!
She is becoming increasingly frustrated, and her exhaustion is exacerbating the situation.
Calm down, calm down. Take deep breaths and think!
Again, she sucks in the air, this time trying to stop herself from panicking. But her head is spinning; the lack of sleep and the stress are making her unable to think straight.
Discouraged, she runs a hand across her face. Her head is so fuzzy it's hard to focus.
She tries to keep her eyes open, but they feel so heavy.
No... damn it! Don't fall asleep again!
Piper's mind is swirling.
She's blinking repeatedly, trying her hardest to not slump.
No... I can't fall asleep again. I have to...
A yawn escapes her lips. She takes another innumerable, long, deep breath.
No... please... stay... aw....
Another noise stirs her again. She is sure now. Something is approaching, and it continues to draw closer.
Her eyes widen as she hears the disturbance, and her focus briefly returns.
Someone is approaching. Is it them? Are they finally here?
She's leaning forward instinctively, trying to see better in the darkness.
No sign of movement for now.
Where are they? Why can't I see them?
She's holding her breath, listening to the slightest sound.
She finally hears something, for sure. A whisper.
Piper's heart skips a beat.
She feels a touch on her back and instinctively turns around.
Her heart is racing so fast it feels like it's going to burst out of her chest.
When she finally sees the shape of a tall, slim figure behind her, she almost yells from the shock.
"Ssshhhh," the Sole Survivor whispers again, passing her a cup of coffee. "It's just me. I thought you could need it."
The fear instantly melts away as Piper recognizes the person in front of her. She exhales deeply and takes a few seconds to calm down.
"Damn it... you almost gave me a heart attack!" She takes another deep breath to try to steady her shaking nerves. "I could've shot you, you know," she adds as she takes the cup.
Sole sneakers.
"Even so close, I am not sure it's really threatening. I saw you shoot, and it's not really accurate."
Piper scoffs slightly, a hint of playful offense in her response.
"Excuse me? I think you need to have a closer look at your eyes. My aim is absolutely perfect."
She takes a sip of the heavily sweetened coffee to soothe her nerves and gives Sole an annoyed but amused look.
"You're lucky I didn't draw my sawed-off on you... That could've ended badly."
"For you. You would have spilled the coffee," they remark.
A sarcastic grin appears on Piper's face, and she shakes her head.
"You know, you'll always be a wiseass, huh?" she replies.
"Still nothing?" they ask, motioning to the empty space lower in the street.
The journalist follows Sole's motion, and her voice grows gloomier.
"No one yet, damn it... I don't understand what's going on. They were supposed to meet here. But where are they?"
Sole hums softly, and Piper glances at them as they settle down beside her.
They just comfortably install themselves to wait with the reporter. She can't help but appreciate. She can't help but really appreciate her friend. Their presence at her side means so much in so many ways. They are so comforting, and she's grateful they're here.
She takes a small sip of coffee before speaking again, her voice filled with a quiet thankfulness.
"You didn't have to come, you know," she says softly. "I know you're busy with your quests."
"Eh, Ellie told me about your struggle with your sister. Valentine then informed me about the upcoming meeting. I knew you would try your best to bring the light on it but probably had your own light off before it could happen. I just did what a friend had to."
They had just walked all the way down from Diamond City, in the dark, in the wild of the ruins of Boston, a cup of coffee in their hands, just for her. It’s talking so loudly—about all she can say on it.
Piper can't help but feel touched by their attention and thoughtfulness.
Her heart warms up over in her chest.
"Heh, always playing savior and taking care of everyone, huh?" she teases.
They shrug, but Piper can't help. Since the Sole Survivor entered her life, this peculiar morning of October, Piper had a real life change. Up until that point, she had been on her own, counting somewhat on Ellie here and there to keep an eye on her and her sister, but just every so often, as the secretary had already her own 'kid' to keep an eye on, and this kid being a full-grown synth, she really had her hands full.
With Sole, it's so different.
It's like they can sense when she's struggling.
They always seem to be there when she really needs it, a thoughtful presence in every day, every time she feels at a loss.
And just the very presence of Sole brings a sense of reliability into her life.
It's a feeling she's never really experienced before.
She takes another sip of coffee.
"Thanks... I mean it... I don't know what I'd do without you."

Arriving at the Great Green Jewel, 10/31/2287
(CW Crude humor)
I made it to Diamond City this afternoon. I couldn't help but laugh - it's Fenway Park. I'm glad its still taking care of the people of Boston. I'd hate to see what this place would look like in the wrong hands.
The trip in was not easy, but I made it as quick as I could. There's good reason that people hold up in a place like this; Raiders and ghouls are absolutely everywhere. As we got closer downtown, Dogmeat and I were able to follow the signs that pointed to Diamond City, but not far from the main gates, we approached and witnessed the end of a battle between a group of men all wearing the same old, dusty armor battle and these enormous, green men...(?) As things came to a close, the team of five were throwing their fists in the air in celebration. I thought one of them sounded some kind of victory horn, but then I realized the sound induced panic in them. "Where is it?!" I heard one of them shout.
In the not-so-far distance, a disgustingly large muscle of a dog that had a mouth like a gaping maw of teeth rounded the corner of a building and propelled itself towards the team, not running with speed, but literally bounding through the air, launched by its suffocatingly large leg muscles. Its breaths huffed with its beefy foot falls, and even from afar, I could see its dense saliva gushing from between its jagged, razor teeth. Most of the men ran; a couple fired their pipe weapons, but if they hit any of their shots, it didn't phase the beast at all. They all began running then, but one of them... One of them was running with the slightest limp. And his enemy was gaining on him.
"Shit," I said under my breath. Dogmeat was whining and tapping his paws as he watched the giant hound lock in on the guard. His whines and winces gave in to a few fearful barks. I lifted my new rifle, Righteous Authority, and I zeroed in on my target. As soon as I was confident in my shot and not a second's breath later, I pulled the trigger and a bolt of red shot from my gun and fired through the air before sinking into the hound's skin and releasing a burst of radiant, fiery energy. The hound was knocked off course, but hardly losing any of the momentum from its powerful stride, and was thrown against an old post box. The metal of the box crunched as if it had been hit by a car, and the hound bounced against the ground and up against a wall. My pipboy beeped - my next shot would neutralize the animal. By now, the guards had stopped running and all stood in a trance. I looked over at them briefly and saw their big eyes looking on with surprise. I turned back and fired my weapon. The hound's body, which was still against the wall but riddled with angry breaths, dropped limp with a finite thud. The scorched bite where my shot had landed was gently flaming from the abundance of energy.
"Holy shit, lady," the limping guard shakily called out, walking over to me. He was shorter than me and somewhat round. "You might have saved my life just now," he said, taking off his helmet. He was bald on top and had a pretty bad shave job. His laugh lines were deep. As I got closer to them, I realized they were all wearing old baseball uniforms. I noticed, written in white paint across one of the men's armor pads, were the words, "Diamond City Security".
I chuckled; they looked like a group of high school boys that got too dirty during ball practice. Their faces told that they were unsure of my sense of humor. I quickly straightened my face. "I mean, uh, yeah, I'm really glad I could help." The men's faces relaxed, but not entirely. I couldn't blame them.
"Listen, I ain't seen you around, but if you find yourself thirsty, meet me at the Dugout Inn sometime. I definitely owe you a drink," he said.
His buddies nodded, agreeing that he probably owed me more than that. "Hey, numb nuts," one of them said. "You buying a round for everybody?" I smiled softly as the friends gave each other a little hell.
"Ayy, beat it, bucko, you still owe me from last week!" The limping guard rolled his eyes and waved away his friends. The group walked off towards the wreckage of their battle. He turned back to me and looked down at Dogmeat. "Hey, you take care of her, you hear?" Dogmeat wagged his tail and licked the man's outstretched hand a couple times.
"The Dugout Inn - is that in Diamond City?" I asked.
"Yes, ma'am. Head that way, just follow the signs. Its just around the corner." He turned back towards where a handful of green men lay on the ground. "They been getting brave lately. Maybe just stupid. But its been attacks, just closer and closer to the city." He shook his head in mild disapproval. "Ah, well. Job security, I guess." He smiled back at me.
I forced a smile. "Hey, listen," I said. He did, with anticipation. "I'm kinda... New around here," I said awkwardly. "I guess I don't get out much." I held up my arm, showing off my pipboy.
The guard's eyes glowed, and he looked back at his friends to see if they were watching as well. Assuring that he was the lone witness, he gawked back at me. "Wow," he said breathily. "I'd give my left arm for one of those! Ha, or my left leg," he said, slapping the limper.
"What are they?" I asked, motioning towards the dead.
"Super mutants," he said. "Big ol' stupid bastards. But they are deadly, and what they lack in smarts, they make up in balls." He held his hands out and rounded and weighed the air, as if to show how big their... "They got guts," he said, providing me relieving clarity. "I saw one blow himself up just because a ghoul wandered into his little meat pit. Took like three other Supers with him, the stupid son of a bitch!
"Wow," I sighed, stifling a laugh. "It's really fucked up out here, isn't it?"
He shook his head but with approval. "You said it, sister."
"I'll see you at the Dugout," I said, extending my hand to him. "My name is Eleanor."
He shook it firmly. "Friends call me Hick," he said encouragingly.
"Well, alright," I said with a smile. "I'll see you later, Hick."
I really didn't even have to close my eyes to be able to picture all the bustle of the city folks in their shiny clothes, driving their shiny cars, as I approached the gates of Fenway Park Diamond City. In my mind, in my respective memory, it hadn't been more than a year since I'd been here. Nate loved spending as much time as he could at the ballpark. I think he would be happy to see it as it is now, all things considered.
As I approached the massive gate, I noticed a woman in a tweed hat and long, red coat. She was hollering something into a microphone. "Open this gate right now, Danny Sullivan! I live here. You can't just lock me out! Aarrgh!"
A sigh from the speaker. "I got orders not to let you in, Miss Piper... I'm sorry. I'm just doing my job."
"Just doing your job?" the woman barked. "Protecting Diamond City means keeping me out, is that it? Ohhh," she mocked, wiggling her fingers. "'Look, its the scary reporter!' Boo!"
"I'm sorry, but Mayor McDonough's really steamed, Piper. Sayin' that article you wrote was all lies. The whole city's in a tizzy now."
"What do you mean you can't open the gate? Stop playing around, Danny!" Her voice began to show a shred of desperation lined in her anger. "I'm standing out in the open here, for crying out loud!" As she reminded herself, too, of this fact, she turned to check her surroundings and quickly laid her eyes on me. Her expression painted relief.
"I got orders not to let you in, Miss Piper. I'm sorry. I'm just doing my job." This Piper character seemed to ignore the man in the speaker. She stepped a few feet closer to me and whispered softly.
"You." I blinked. "You want into Diamond City, right?"
I paused but only for a split moment. "Well, I just got here... But, yeah."
"Alright," she hushed. "Just play along." She turned just enough that the microphone could pick her up clearly. Confidently, she said, "What was that? You said you're a trader up from Quincy?" She smiled back and me and winked. "Oh? And you have enough supplies to keep the general store stocked for a whole month? Huh!" She made an inquisitive face then shrugged. "You hear that, Danny? You gonna open the gate and let us in? Or are you going to be the one talking to crazy Myrna about losing out on all this supply?" she said, waving her hands over me like I was a prize.
An exasperated sigh of defeat from in the speaker. "Geez, all right. No need to make it personal, Piper. Give me a minute." The speaker clicked off and I could hear the gears of the gate turning.
"Better head inside before ol' Danny catches onto the bluff," she said triumphantly.
A bit stunned, I motioned to her. "You first."
"Wouldn't' t have it any other way," she said, matter-of-factly.
Unfortunately, as we approached the stairways down, a plump, red-faced man in a strangely clean suit approached us both. He seemed out of breath and maybe like he should look into post-apocalyptic blood pressure medicine.
"You DEVIOUS--" He shook his fist in the air. "RABBLE-ROUSING--" He approached us and stomped his feet against the ground and pointing a finger in Piper's face. "SLANDERER!" He dropped his hand out of her face and shook them about. "The... The level of dishonesty in that paper of yours," he roared. "I'll have that printer scrapped for parts!" A deviously threatening and petty smile fell upon his face and quickly disappeared with Piper's retort.
"Oh, is that a statement, Mr. McDonough?" she said childishly. "'Tyrant mayor shuts down the press!'" Her arms waved in the sky, painting her words into imagination. "Why don't we ask the newcomer, hmm? As a hard-working, good-hearted citizen, do you support the news?" Not giving me a chance to respond, she finalized, "'Cause the mayor's threatening to throw free speech in the dumpster!"
I stood stiffly. "I, uhh..."
"Oh," the Mayor cooed. "Oh, I didn't mean to bring you into this argument, miss." His voice seemed entirely different. "No," he continued with a warm smile. "You look like Diamond City material! Welcome to the great, green jewel of the Commonwealth. Safe. Happy! A fine place to come, spend your money, settle down!" He sounded just like the guys in the old General Atomics commercials. "And don't let this muckraker here tell you otherwise, alright?" he hissed with irritation in Piper's direction.
"I'm sure your city is a great place," I assured, looking for an out from this awful conversation.
"Yeah, greatest house of cards in the Commonwealth... Until the wind blows," Piper said, waving her arm behind her to mimic flatulence.
The mayor stuttered over her as she spoke, trying to muffle her words. "Oh, eugh, I uh," He cleared his throat. "Ahem. Now," he said charmingly towards me. "Was there anything in particular that you came to our city for?"
I hesitated for a moment but answered. "I'm... I'm trying to find someone."
His brow furrowed. "Trying to find someone? Who?"
"My son. Shaun. He's less than a year old."
"Wait," Piper piped. "Your son's missing?" She turned to the mayor again. "You hear that, McDonough? Is Diamond City Security just going to stand by while a mother searches for her infant son all on her own?"
Mayor McDonough did not acknowledge her with anything more than a sour look. "Don't listen to her. While I am afraid that our security team can't follow every case that comes through... I'm confident you can find help here."
I was stunned. I opened my mouth to speak but choked on words I did not have. "I... A mayor of a great city must know everyone,"
I pleaded. "Who can help me?"
The mayor looked at me and the expression on his face suggested he was weighing his options. The loud mouthed Piper's presence may have tipped the scales in my favor. "Well..." he began. "There is one private citizen. Nick Valentine. A... detective of sorts, who specializes in tracking people down. Usually for debts or whatnot..." As if already regretting saying anything, he quickly turned and began to walk away. "Now, I have to get going. I'm sorry, Diamond City Security doesn't have time to help, but I'm sure Mr. Valentine charges a reasonable fee."
Piper shouted after him, causing him to stop and turn back. "This is ridiculous!" she called. "Diamond City Security can't spare one officer to help? I want the truth, McDonough! What's the real reason security never investigates any kidnappings?"
Almost calmly, the mayor replied, "I've had enough of this, Piper. From now on, consider you and that little sister of yours on notice." And he turned and walked through the doors.
After he was out of ear shot, Piper turned to me. "I'm impressed," she flattered. "Not everyone can claw information out of McDonough's tight-fisted, little baby-hands. Hmm, why don't you stop by my office after you see Valentine? I think I just found my next story."
The smile on her face was... Unsettling.

On our way in, Piper pointed out a few hot spots throughout the city from our generous view coming down the stairs. I almost couldn't believe it. A real city, right in the middle of Fenway Park. It's Halloween, and to my amazement, the folks around town have decorated with now-ancient plastic pumpkins and streamers.
Piper offered to show me to Valentine's office but gave directions when I admitted I'd rather go alone. She didn't press; it seems like the nosiest people often have the most respect for privacy.
I almost dropped to my knees when I turned the corner. The alleys of the makeshift city were dimming as the sun began to set on the distant horizon. "Its so bright!" I could hear Mama Murphy say in my mind as the red glow of VALENTINE DETECTIVE AGENCY washed onto my face.
"The heart..." I whispered. "She was right."
I quickly rushed into the office. It seemed empty at first but then I noticed a woman rustling through some files.
"Um, excuse me," I said shakily.
"Oh," she said lifelessly. "Another stray coming in from the rain... Afraid you're too late. Office is closed."
My heart sank. "Are you the detective?" My eyesight began to blur with tears. "I know you must be busy, but I won't take much of your time, miss. It's important."
A spark of concern showed on her face. She swallowed hard. "No. I'm Nick's secretary." She caught herself. "Well, that's what I used to do anyway. But now Nick's disappeared." She looked around solemnly at the hoard of files. "Can't really keep a detective agency open without a detective."
My eyes darted back and forth. "But," I began, frantically. "Do you... Do you have any idea how I could find him?"
She looked pitifully at me, but I could see she hesitated to answer my question. "He... disappeared working a case. Skinny Malone's gang had kidnapped a young woman, and he tracked them down to their hideout in Park Street Station. I guess there's an old Vault down there they use as a base. I told Nick he was walking into a trap..." She turned away and I could hear her sniffle. "But he just smiled. And walked out the door like he always does."
I put my hands up to my mouth to keep them from shaking and to keep my breath steady. but I felt on the brink of hyperventilating. Then I heard Mama Murphy's voice again; “You are looking for a man. He can help you - he will help you. But he ain’t gonna be the man you expect.”
Almost without thinking, I turned to the woman again. "I can help. Don't worry. I will find him. You have my word."
The woman had a look of confusion, perhaps even doubt. But there was unmistakable gratitude in her voice. "Thank you."
Now I'm spending a few hours resting at Piper's house, of all places. Despite my hesitancy, I did tell her I would visit her after seeing about the detective, and at this point, I need help. I know from before the Boston city streets were a wasteland how to get to Park Street Station from here, but now? I wouldn't make it without getting myself killed. To my surprise, Piper offered to travel with me there -- on the condition that I let her interview me for her paper...
"Okay, Blue," she said, romantically touching her pencil to paper. "Let's get this over with so you can get some rest before we head out tonight, yeah?"
"Blue?" I questioned. "Why are you calling me that?"
"'Cause you're a Vault Dweller. I know you're not wearing the blue jumpsuit right now, but the Pip-Boy and that "fish out of water" look? Dead giveaways." I raised my brows and nodded. Couldn't blame her for being observant. "So here's the deal. I want an interview. Your life story in print. I think it's time Diamond City had a little outside perspective on the Commonwealth."
"What kind of interview is this going to be exactly...?"
"Oh, I ask you who you are, get your opinion on life out there, and maybe load up a few tough questions to keep it interesting." I sighed and motioned for her to begin. "Good. Okay. So, I know you're from a Vault. How would you describe your time on the inside?"
I froze, no pun intended... "I, uhh..." I gritted my teeth out with nervousness. "Why's that important? I'm here now, aren't I?" I said it almost as a suggestion.
She learned forward and said sternly but softly, as if someone were there to overhear us, "I told you, this is a perspective piece. People in Diamond City need to know you're from a different world than them." She leaned back. "But okay. So you've seen the Commonwealth. How does it compare to your old life?"
I thought for a moment. So many answers came to mind. "Honestly, seeing everyone surviving out here? Rebuilding the world? It gives me some weird form of hope." Piper smiled. I'm really not 100% sure if I meant what I said. I'd like to believe so...
"That's... surprisingly inspired, Blue. We're definitely quoting that. Now, the big question. You came all this way looking for someone. Who is it?"
"My son," I affirmed. "His name is Shaun. He was kidnapped. He's not even a year old."
"The parent after the missing child. As heartbreaking today as it ever was." She sighed, but I couldn't tell how genuine it was or if she was just invoking emotion for the story. "Tell me," she continued. "Do you suspect the Institute is involved?"
"I... I don't know?"
"No one ever does," she said, scribbling something. "That's what makes them so scary. Now, not everything that goes wrong has the Institute behind it, but there's always a chance. That's why I'm asking. But sometimes they even replace a person with a Synth double. A little covert agent no one would ever suspect."
"I've seen a Synth - they didn't seem like they could be mistaken for a real person..." My mind went back to Arcjet, mowing down Synths in droves with Danse.
"Well, there's two major kinds you have to watch out for," she explained, apparently off the record, as she sat her paper pad down and was sipping some sludgy looking coffee. "The first is an obvious fake. Skin looks like plastic. Skeleton might even be showing. Sounds like that's what you've seen." She crinkled her nose as she seemed to struggle to swallow the drink. "Yeah, you see groups of them scouring the Commonwealth, killing people, and scavenging what's left. But the second type of Synth... That's the real deal. With skin, blood, warm smiles and guilty glances just like a good, old-fashioned human." It didn't seem possible but I didn't want to consider the possibility of it at all. "So do you think they could be involved? The Institute, or one of their agents?" Piper prodded.
"I... I don't know. Sure sounds like they could be."
Piper nodded knowingly and scribbled on her paper. "For the last part of our interview, I'd like to do something different. I want you to make a statement to Diamond City directly. The threat of kidnapping is all but ignored in the Commonwealth. Everyone wants to pretend it doesn't happen! So what would you say to someone out there who's lost a loved one, but might be too scared, or too numb to the world, to look for them?" She watched me in anticipation.
"Oh, um," I thought for a moment about what kind of message to give. I wanted to pull something out of me that was strong, encouraging, graceful, maybe all of the above. But suddenly I just started to feel how sore my muscles are and heavy my eyelids feel. Yes, my heart is warm with a fire to find my son, but I am so, so tired. "No matter how much you want to give up," I said, with exhaustion. "Just... Don't. You have to have hope. That you'll see them again." My eyes fell to the floor. "Or at least, that you'll know the truth."
For the first time, I saw Piper searching for something to say. Finally, she said, "A strong note to end on, Blue. Thanks." She set her notepad down. "That's everything. Get some rest for now. Sometime after midnight, we'll leave to go find Nick. It's safer to travel at night over there... Anyway, thanks. It's gonna take some time to put this all together but I think your story is going to give Diamond City plenty to talk about."

I’ve always wondered what kind of evidence Piper had for McDonough being a synth, because there certainly wasn’t any in her article, and I finally found it — in some random Deacon dialogue, of all places. Arturo tells Deacon the mayor “keeps late hours, with strange visitors.” Deacon replies, “That’s not proof.” The informant says, “Hey, not even Piper’s dug up anything more yet.”
SO WHERE EXACTLY IS THIS WHOLE STORY COMING FROM, PIPER?
#i mean yeah she was right but a stopped clock is right twice a day#game kinda just glosses over how piper fosters enough paranoia to get a man killed at the start of the story#with apparently no evidence whatsoever#fallout 4#fallout#deacon fallout#deacon fallout 4#piper wright#piper fallout#piper fallout 4#mayor mcdonough
