Do you think Tite Kubo took inspiration from an actual type of mantis called a shield mantis ?.

Not gonna lie, Nnoitra's overall character design used to look ridiculous to me, but now seeing this type of mantis, it actually makes a lot more sense in hindsight.

You know it wouldn't surprise me in the least if this were true 💖 plus it even looks really tall like Nnoitra (god I love mantises sm, I'm a bug lover in general but mantises are just the most fascinating to me)

Also it being a shield mantis is pretty interesting considering how adamantly Nnoitra continued to protect his pride in the manga :P

So I had this idea for a sick!Dazai fic (that I'm honestly too tired to write dhehee), and who else is better to brainstorm it with than my fellow Dazai whump enthusiast? :D

Based on my own experience of being sick for the past week, I forgot how awful it can get. It sucks. You're feverish, your nose is either runny or super blocked, your throat hurts, you get headaches, you're lethargic 80% of the time, all that stuff. But what sucked the most for me was how hot my skin felt. Like, clothes were so uncomfortable to wear from the sweat, especially since it's still summer around here.

So imagine putting bandages into account as well?

Yep, awful.

So I present you with a scenario: Teen!Dazai in his office, has taken over paper duty (that Mori knows he isn't gonna complete anyway) because of his fever. He feels gross, to say the least. Flushed and hazy, a little nauseous and sleepy. But his skin- his skin is scorching, and there is no way for it to disperse that heat because it can't breathe. He endures it for as long as he can until he just can't.

In his haze, he scrambles to tear his bandages off, loosen his tie, and decides that he will lie on the cold floor shirtless. The air conditioner isn't enough. No one is there to stop him.

Until Chuuya barges in without knocking as usual (to discus the paperwork he also knows Dazai isn't going to finish) and stumbles onto the scene.

Dazai doesn't even acknowledge him, has already taken off the bandages around his eye and is halfway through tearing off the ones around his neck. His clothes are disheveled as he loosens them and looks like he's about to take them off.

Chuuya gapes for a solid second, before exclaiming with a blush-

"What the fuck?!"

He rushes over, trying not to look at Dazai's skin that's on display and stops him. He wraps him with Mori's oversized coat aggressively.

Dazai fights against him, exclaiming that he needs to lie on the floor. Chuuya doesn't get it, all that he knows is that Dazai is delirious, and even if he thinks it's a good idea to tear through his protective layer now, he'll definitely regret it later.

So Chuuya ties him with the coat and decides to take the paperwork to his place, along with a flailing Dazai on his shoulder.

I just wanna see Dazai giving Chuuya hell during treating him 😭 cuz even if cooling off is a good idea for a fever, not staying huddled in the warmth equates to chills and endless sneezes. Makes you feel even more awful. So it's gonna be a push and pull of Chuuya trying to warm Dazai up (in order to fight off the fever faster), and Dazai wanting to cool off (because he isn't used to being this warm and hates it), until they come up with a compromise somehow dgdhejndjd

Yeah, just a fun idea! :3 Feel free to expand on it hehe

UGH THE TENDER, FEVERISH SKIN UNDER THE BANDAGES ❤️‍🩹 where everything just feels like too much, i completely understand why Dazai (in his feverish delusion) would think removing the offending material would be the solution

Chuuya barging in and quickly going from 👁️👄👁️ to 😳🤬. i love that he goes into protective mode, thinking of how future Dazai will surely regret this course of action & putting measures in place to prevent that 🥺

Chuuya would wrap Dazai up like a sushi roll & carry him on his shoulder like a log back to his apartment, where he proceeds to lose the idgaf war & embrace his mother hen side (which he still denies exists)

meanwhile Dazai is kicking & fighting him every step of the way, acting more like a 5 year old than a mafia sub executive (he’s still only a kid sobs), even as he shivers with chills

until Chuuya manages to get a hand in his sweat soaked curls, gently carding through them. the coolness of his leather glove against Dazai’s overheated scalp makes Dazai go still… and then slump against the couch in a mixture of relief & exhaustion. Chuuya takes advantage of his compliance to make him agree to stop fighting him, & they spend the rest of the day resting on the couch, watching movies & playing video games (well. Chuuya plays. Dazai watches & points out all of Chuuya’s mistakes) 🩷🩷🩷

It's the day after and it is no longer my arm that's making me suffer but thank you 👍 I just overworked it, if I draw a little less for a while it'll be fine

Fun facts, eh? Well I'm not sure this is interesting to anyone while the rest of the AU hasn't properly debuted yet... but I'll try:

The City is surrounded by all kinds of incredibly diverse and oftentimes conflicting terrain. White sanded beaches that sparkle like diamonds, snowy mountains skirted by pine woods, rocky deserts and canyons lined with sugar (yes, the Kingdom exists here), tropical jungles, temperate meadows... whatever suits your taste, a change of scenery is always an option!! Caine takes a lot of pride in these areas, as they took research and elaborate designing. Other than a showman, he's a bit of an artist at heart.

Jax is partial to the all-you-can-eat buffets. It's become sort of tradition that he takes the newbies out with him to his favorite one. Hey, no one say he's not sociable. (If his company isn't that enjoyed, at least the food will be...)

Also, I've decided for the time being that Bubble is a beer bubble. Always foaming at the mouth... Rabid thing.

Agatha tends to introduce herself to newcomers down at the Club, but her and Ginnie may also organize a "day out" to get them into the swing of things and show them how the world works!! And if Kinger is notified of their arrival, he will invite them to an evening of fine dining and live music at The Velvet Butterfly via letter. (Very classy.)

During the day Lulu works at a stereotypical diner on the outer part of the city. She's one of those roller-skating waitresses, and certainly seems chipper about her job.

Her programmed backstory is that she was raised sheltered within the kingdom walls by her overprotective parents. Between her extensive studies and being taught stict etiquette she barely left the castle, let alone went outside the kingdom, so that one day she may become the perfect ruler to take her father's place. She didn't mind the prospect of leadership but craved the taste of a more exciting, wild and unrestrained life, especially in that fabled City she had heard so much about from their subjects... One day, she could no longer take it and ran away, taking an outlaws' carriage. She loved her parents and her people, but she'd come to the decision that she needed to lead a life of her own and discover the adventures of a world far different from theirs. For what she's done she can't return yet, but one day, she might.

Her and Gummi belong in a category of NPCs known as "companion AI". Compared to the mannequins they have elaborate designs, backstories and personalities for the more immersive experience of talking to a fellow person; they also have the second best memory after Caine, seeing as they were created to be spent plenty of time with. This companionship can mean anything from simple acquaintances to romantic relations to... more intimate things, and even though these two are fairly new around they've experienced it all. Their feelings about it vary.

The major NPCs of other episodes will have a place in this AU as well, but I'll wait with the more detailed brainstorming until those come out. For now, Orbsman is a Spudsy's cashier Jax enjoys frequently humiliating and picking on. Martha Mildenhall, the resident ghost of a mansion as we can infer, hosts the players' feasts and various other events at her lavish estate, helped by mannequins and her little spook friend in the catering.

Caine is dressed like a pimp. No, really.

Wasn't expecting to do a lore ramble today but here we go! :D

This happened over 100 years before main events of Bleach, I'd say around the mid 1850s (around the end of the Edo period and into the Meiji period).

During that time Nnoitra went by the human name Nobuki Gishitomi. She was the heiress of a wealthy family (publicly known as the Gishitomi Clan) who had high influence and power. Nobuki was the first female heir in a clan that had been known to have all male heirs, and as a result she was deemed weaker and inferior for it.

An absurd amount of pressure and expectation over social standing was heavily pushed on her by direct family and relatives. The discriminatory bias and constant comparisons to her ancestors/past heirs made her feel insignificant and worthless. She'd often turn to the company of nature in her family's estate gardens for comfort, and in doing so developed a particular fondness for the praying mantises that lived among the flora.

Nobuki was often ridiculed for having empathy for insects, and she often found herself wishing to be as strong and fierce as the mantises she admired. In spite of the high status she chose to pursue personal niche interests (even if her family disapproved), the most notable being entomology.

Although she held the prestigious title as heiress she was extremely miserable and depressed due to how demanding her family was about maintaining power and influence. She often struggled to see herself as worthy of her position, even developing an inferiority complex that led to unhealthy self deprecation and internal misogyny.

The straw that broke the camel's back was when the Gishitomi Clan attempted to arrange a suitor for her with the intention of completely stripping her of the rank as heiress as well as any inheritance she'd have from her family name. Trapped in a life she couldn't escape Nobuki turned to the only means of freedom from her dismal existence and took her life.

The anguish and despair as a living mortal influenced the shape her hollow form took, hence why Nnoitra takes on the appearance of a praying mantis. His hollow hole from the deteriorated chain of fate formed over his eye is a symbolic representation of his inability to see hope for himself.
