She woke up with a start, tension lingering in her body as fear thrummed through her. Her eyes drifted open as she looked around; she was in Gale’s tent, bundled warmly under blankets, with the wizard himself sitting on the bedroll beside her. For once, he didn’t have his nose buried in a book; his focus seemed to have been entirely on Devi. A tired smile pulled at his lips as he took note of her wakefulness. “Hello, my love,” he murmured, setting his hand on her hair to stroke the red strands back. “How do you feel?”

Devi wrinkled her nose as she relaxed into Gale’s gentle touch. “Lousy,” she mumbled as she slowly shifted to face him fully. Her stomach hurt with how hungry she felt, and her head ached like she was hungover. The twinges of her newly-healed body as she moved made her wince before she felt herself pale at the memories. “Oh, gods… it was real…”

Gale’s smile faded as he nodded. “It was,” he murmured. “And I’m so sorry that it took so long to find you. The two days you spent as Gortash’s prisoner were entirely too long.”

“Two days?” Devi blinked as she thought back over her hazy, blurry memories of captivity. “It felt longer,” she admitted.

The queen warns about the dangers of adopting wild knight errants but the princess promises to take good care of him and make sure to keep him away from their domesticated knights until he’s properly adjusted. Queen finally relents once she sees his rusted kit, broken sword, and the saddest brown eyes known to man. Princess claps her hands excitedly and drags him off to the apothecary to make sure he doesn’t have worms.
