Ninjago Magazine Comics Translated Issue 85 - The Sea Monster

Hey everyone! If you didn't know, Blue Ocean has a variety of non-canon Ninjago comics (minus one canon comic ft. the story of Lilly) in magazines. They're fun extra stories that happen between scenes or episodes of the show; but some of my favourites, like the one below, are between seasons. This one is Post Seabound. You can sometimes find these magazines in English, but they tend to be pretty rare depending on the area. They are, however, very popular in Europe, especially Germany, which is where I got my collection. As I'm bilingual in German, I've translated the comic below, trying to keep it as direct as possible while still making sense in English. Let me know if y'all enjoy it and if there's any issues in particular you want to see translated (I don't have every issue, but I have a fair bit from newer seasons and a few of older seasons).

i know people focus on kai and morro being parallels but. nya is right there. they’re the wojira elements! nya’s entire arc in season 5 sets her up as a foil to morro! she’s the only one who can defeat him in that season! they are both hyper-independent and strive to be successful in a very unhealthy manner. they cannot accept any sort of failure. give me more of them!!!!

Actually I find Seabound’s whole thing about Maya fucking fantastic because I distinctly remember Hands Of Time being moreso focused on Ray being the one Nya and Kai were meant to be angry at. Maya was on Ray’s side, yes, but the kids seemed to forgive her basically within the same episode they met her, while Kai was pretty pissed at Ray the whole way through.

I feel like Seabound puts that on it’s head and says “Actually Nya has been harbouring bad feelings about her mom this entire time and it’s time to talk them out” because yeah, they already did that with Ray in HOT. It’s Maya’s turn now.

(I do find it a bit of a shame that Maya and Kai didn’t get some screen time with the same topics as her and Nya got— I feel like those got pushed aside so that Nya and Kai could have some moments like that. Which I don’t really mind but still. maybe even Ray and Maya would have been nice, where they, idk, talk about their kids?? But that’s a conversation for a different post.)

The ninjago writers thought they were sooo smart when they made Nya forget her memories when she merged with the ocean/silly

Because Nya merging with the ocean, her element, and completely forgetting everything that made her her hurts more when you realise how important being true to herself was to Nya. How hard she worked to reach the point she did only to lose all those memories and leave, to sacrifice it all for the ones she loved.

And, something i love thinking about for the ninja, she proved just how much she is like her element despite being merged with it already by listening to her instincts to protect (which was formed from her memories), becoming curious and asking questions as she showed bits of her personality (also formed from her memories over the years, and her curiosity leading her to becoming as great as she is) and then remembering it all through her inability to forget.

Because Nya would never truly let her self forget the ones she would die for, she never could.

And she clings to those memories in fear of losing it, even though she proved that water does carry memory. That she would always carry her own and make sure everyone remembers her. Funny how they did exactly that by never forgetting Nya, no one in the whole damn city forgot my girl.

You could also link it back to how she is now the only person who remembers Nadakhan, and everything that happened during that time. You could also link it back to how Nya had no memories of her parents, leaving her unable to bond with them like how Kai could, so she had to form new memories of a forgotten past during that season. You could also link to how all of Kai’s childhood memories are linked to Nya or has her in it.

Isn’t it crazy that Ninjago has been around for 14 years. Think about that for a moment and realize how much time has passed since then. How we have seen the ninja grow into the ninja they are today their lows and their highs, how strong they have become and how they have grown so much over these 14 years. So let’s keep on jumping up, kicking back and whipping around and spinning for many more years to come. Cause we are the Ninjago fandom and we will never end because ninja never quit.

“You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

“Hah… I guess at the of the day, hitting things still helps take my mind off… everything. The difference is that when I was beating up thugs, I still felt miserable later. Teaching these kids I- I feel like I’m doing something worthwhile.”

“I think she would be proud of you.”
