99. Pathetic — Blame Candy
My palm's pressed up against my face My brain is scattered all over the place I'm working harder than I need to be Because you won't allow my life to be easy Ooh, it's problematic even though you'd profit too You're having trouble sleeping, and I think I know why 1460 days since we were alright But now you're just pathetic, I said it You are pathetic
Ooh, I've been sitting on this one for so long! The first 8 or so songs on dbhc X's playlist portray the gradual deterioration of Xisuma's psyche throughout season 8 under Android 24's command and control; Pathetic actually comes right after Again & Again on the list, as Xisuma's dread turns to self-deprication spun by 24's demands and manipulation. His self-appointed derpiness kind of becomes a weapon turned against him, and the playful self-bashing becomes something 24 canonically uses against him (see: Evil X always calling Xisuma a derp, and 'foolish axolotl' etc) to admonish his efforts and ideas.
Even though this song is on Xisuma's playlist, I imagine most of the lyrics (namely, the ones bolded above) are coming from Android 24, coming from an annoyed, flippant, and demeaning place.

The Many Languages of Dick Grayson
Apparently, according to Nightwing #54, he can speak 12, so I went on a little quest to see just how many I could identify.
Tumblr media
Starting off with The Essential Batman Encyclopedia, the entry for Dick Grayson lists him as being trained in French, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Cantonese with having some proficiency in an unknown Romani dialect. Given there are multiple examples of him speaking these languages throughout the comics, I am inclined to trust this claim. To start, we've got several examples of French (Gotham Knights #14, Detective Comics Annual #12, Nightwing #73, Grayson #10-- also featuring Spanish)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Grayson #1 he speaks Russian only briefly, but in Detective Comics #36 he speaks it throughout.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As far as the Chinese languages go, while I believe Dick can speak Mandarin and/or Cantonese fairly well (Batman/Superman World's Finest #3), his Hanzi recognition and literacy could use some work.
Tumblr media
Similarly, when the Titans head off to Japan in Titans Annual #1, we have Nightwing speaking Japanese in battle; however, when it comes to the prospective job of being a manga translator in Nightwing #125, he claims he doesn't know Japanese, which leads me to believe he is only proficient in speaking Japanese/Chinese and struggles with the writing systems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So what about the languages not covered in the encyclopedia? To start, we have another romance language: Italian (Nightwing #72).
Tumblr media
Followed by some alleged German (Nightwing #51, JLA #44)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And conversations in Farsi (Robin #175)
Tumblr media
While I've seen some Tumblr and Reddit posts claim he knows Kikuyu, The Power Company: Manhunter #1 only says he "brushed up" on his Kikuyu before going to Kenya, so it is unknown how much of the language he actually speaks, but to me it doesn't seem likely to be a lot.
Tumblr media
He also, to some unknown degree, speaks Tamaranean-- at least enough to hack into an alien computer (Action Comics #842).
Tumblr media
As far as unspoken languages go, Dick is fluent in ASL, which is proven numerous times when he communicates with Jericho (New Teen Titans 1984).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And lastly, the two languages that remain rather uncertain are Romani and Cant-- largely due to the nature of the languages themselves and their representation in comics. "Romani," for instance, has several different dialects, and when Devin Grayson introduced it for Dick (Gotham Knights #20-21, Nightwing #91), she never specified which, and based on the lines she wrote, her research into the language was questionable at best. Writers since have recognized Dick's Romani heritage, but have not otherwise suggested he retained much of the language to be considered fluent.
Cant is an even wider term than Romani and can be seen as more of jargon for a particular language than a language itself, sometimes even being called a "pseudo-language." The colloquial term for American circus cant is Carny, or "Carny speak" as Boston Brand puts it in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #14 when he and Nightwing encounter a kid who speaks it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So... this leaves us with 11 languages Dick has notable proficiency in: English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Farsi, and ASL. And ~3 languages he has unknown proficiency in: Tamaranean, Kikuyu, Romani, and Carny/Cant (if you want to count it).
Maybe memory-loss Dick was including either Tamaranean or Kikuyu in that count from Nightwing #54, or maybe he knows some other language we haven't seen yet. Given how close the family is to the Al Ghuls, I personally think it would be cool if one of them was Arabic.
But anyway, hope you enjoyed this post! A lot I've seen covering this topic are very surface-level and label some of his more iffy languages as "fluent," so I hope this cleared things up. I've read tons of Nightwing, and I swear there are more examples, but sifting through the 1,000+ comics I've read of him is a lot haha. If y'all know of some others, let me know!

Qijiu is just so delicious because one is like "I hate everyone, everyone hates me my mere existence is a stain and I will make it everyone's problem nobody wants to be with me" and the other responds with "You're so right, Xiao-jiu." Not because he agrees, but that he was too geeked out staring at Shen Jiu's face and imagining them raising a cat together and being all domestic and lovey-dovey and giving each other good morning kisses so he defaulted to his general NPC response that is agreeing with his lil meow meow on everything.

Checks in on the UK news to see how my country is doing after the far right riots thankfully didn't happen last night:

Cool
Tumblr media
COOL
Tumblr media
FUCKING COOL I GUESS
Tumblr media
And this is the big issue. People who jump to defend minorities repeatedly ignoring Jew hate and propagate antisemetism and pretend they can't be doing anything wrong because they are Good and therefore their actions are Good. But they aren't good. They're just performative and they are perfectly happy with violence and murder as long as the people they seem deserving are the ones slaughters in front of them.

Actually feels like I'm losing my mind sometimes 'cause the TDP fandom is the only fandom where it feels like people are hardly at all fawning over the well curated selection of gay DILFs in the series.
Like this is one of the few children's media I know that has canonical mpreg (that's somehow done in a way that's also treated with just as much seriousness as it's treated comedically) and... no one cares? I mean, maybe that wasn't shocking to the fandom at the time and of course a ton of other shit has happened that's gone beyond that (like the cannibalism maybe), but seriously. Surely that should attract people to this show, right?
I mean, tragic old man yaoi became so popular in 2024, I saw everyone talking about it all throughout the year on Tumblr. And no one looked into exploring viravos more through that? Like, what? The way the ship so perfectly aligned with people's ideals for that trope and even hit points that I felt like some people said the most popular ships of that trope weren't able to fit... And if anything it seems like viravos has died down since mid 2024 (around when season 6 came out and when this trope seemed to be peaking in popularity because of the other media coming out at the time that used it) within the show's own fanbase. And it used to be the second most popular ship at that too.
And again, it's one thing for none of these characters or ships to be the main appeal for the fanbase itself... But somehow none of these things draw other people in? That's the crazy part to me. That's what's mind boggling.
#the dragon prince#tdp#viravos#viren#lord viren#aaravos#tdp viren#viren tdp#tdp aaravos#aaravos tdp#another day of wondering why is the series so damn underrated#this turned out to be more of a rant then I intended it to be#but okay so this is my own personal theory#I think a lot of this has to do with the advertising done for the show and creators' interactions with the fandom#cuz it seems like the creators are more heavily aiming at appealing to already existing fans#and I think the thing is most of the already existing fans aren't actually into those things (at least not much anymore)#so there's a lot more promortional material that's made for rayllum and draggang fans#cuz that's a lot more popular currently in the fandom#even tho outside of the fandom what's referenced in the post is what's currently more popular#so ppl outside the show aren't getting exposed to those aspects of the show that are more appealing in bigger fandom spaces#does that make sense?#like even the very few (but well known) ytbers who've done videos on tdp still seem to be more focused on rayllum above anything else#despite also not seeming to be that invested in the fandom#cuz that's all tdp presents itself as and allows itself to present as#(not that that's a bad thing)#also obviously this isn't me saying we should idolize problematic men in media and I'm glad the tdp fandom holds ppl accountable for that#and obviously like the main canon wlw and the most popular mlm ships (janaya and sorvus) are by miles healthier then viravos#but still#(also anyone who thinks that the subreddit is still made up of viren/virrow stans I assure you they lost interest post s6)

thinking about how Gyro 'anti-death penalty' Zeppeli discovers his dark determination and willingness to murder only after the situation concerns Johnny's safety. they make me sick
#gyjo#gyro zeppeli#also its so funny how gyro condemns johnny for having dark determination when he literally agrees to murder ringo in the like the fourth ar#and after that seems to have no problem with it until Johnny tells him he'll shoot Diego if Diego attacks them#would it be crazy for me to draw the conclusion that gyro is maybe just more sensitive to murder when other people are doing it.#sbr#Gyro holds Johnny in high regard; so when seeing johnny 'throw away his humanity' (in Gyro's eyes) when Johnny has his Moments#while also keeping in mind Gyro's backstory#I have to wonder if when he tells Johnny to calm down in Philly#he's trying to keep Johnny and his past executioner trauma separate#and in that way protect the image of Johnny he has in his mind. moreover if he believes even the concept of an executioner is morally bad#then he doesn't want to ever view Johnny as anything like it. basically he's trying to prevent johnny from ever sullying himself#(in Gyro's eyes) through that association#steel ball run#johnny is like 'it's a be or be killed world and i'm won't be the one killed' and in response gyro loses his fucking mind#'Johnny's willing to throw away even his humanity in pursuits of his goals!' oh no! not that!#am I crazy for thinking Gyro is maybe coming into this a little biased. especially when they're in a literal life-or-death situation#and he still finds the time to act shocked when Johnny actually fights for his life#meanwhile as soon as gyro decides johnny is in trouble murder is suddenly understandable and righteous... okay mr zeppeli#johnny joestar#wow. mini essay in the tags as always. sigh#my posts#gyro is nothing if not a hypocrite. that's our problematic king 💛

Rankings of Epic: the Ithaca Saga songs bc I have time now:
(Also just bc something is in last place doesn't mean I hate it, it just means I prefer other things above it)
Odysseus. Think I've said it a couple times before, but I LOVEEEE finale/big fight-type of things. Doesn't matter what it is, they're almost always my fave. Even so, the VOCALS?? THE STORY?? DEAR GOD, HOW LOW JORGE'S VOICE GETS?? I love it. I have nothing more to say
Would You Fall in Love With Me Again. Again, the vocals, Jorge and Anna do such a good job on the track, their voices meld so nicely. About time we got an Odypen duet and THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT. I love the callbacks to the Just a Man motif and the original Olive Tree song
The Challenge. Anna stop killing songs challenge (haha get it)?? I love that we finally got a Penelope song, bout time she got one, and the quiet rage in her voice is everything
Hold Them Down. LISTEN. LISTEN. Ayron Alexander's vocals ARE SO GOOD, but this song makes me extremely uncomfortable. I understand that's the point, I am not blaming Jorge for this in any way like some people, but the way they speak about Penelope is a major no for me. I like this a song a lot, really and truly I do, but I can't just listen to it casually or pick it out due to the subject matter. For those reasons, it's nearer towards the bottom
I Can't Help But Wonder. Jorge and MICO sound so similar together and their song is so sweet. It doesn't stand out to me like some of the others, and while I adore Athena making her way in their, her change of heart is a little sudden to me. The way she and Ody changed positions on "open arms" always makes me ugly cry, though, she finally got there but at what cost? Still, beautiful song

I'm grateful for all the media analysis there has been regarding Enstars and it's treatment of social issues, especially after AKATSUKI's event, but truthfully, acting as if Enstars is the only piece of media to ever have "problematic" aspects cheapens some of this analysis.
For many fans, Enstars passed the line - but the important thing to remember is that media which has not passed the line is not media that is "unproblematic", but media that has not reached a point where moments that are "tactless" or "poor in taste" follow specific and hostile ideologies.
Again, the way that people have been rethinking their engagement with Enstars is commendable since its not something that everybody is willing to consider; however, if this sort of thinking isn't applied to other spaces, then we risk running into the same problems over and over across time.
Enstars' problems aren't unique to it - and are likely being inherited from other media, so its definitely a system to be mindful of - which is why I hope that the lessons that we're picking up from Enstars are also applied elsewhere.
By applying this level of analysis and conscientiousness towards original works and fan spaces, hopefully we create respectful places of discussion where the ideologies that hurt people in real-life aren't also being used to hurt them in fiction and fandom.
