Why was Antony loved by Romans even after the proscriptions?
Cassius Dio, writing more than two and a half centuries after Antony's death, describes Antony as being the most ruthless of the three Triumvirs at the time of the proscriptions.
Tumblr media
So does Velleius, but it was this historian's policy to show Augustus, in whose circle he moved, in the best light, and to malign Antony; and therefore his evidence is not to be accepted. He accused Antony, in any case, chiefly of having shut for ever Cicero's "divine lips"; but the Philippics were not divine they were devilish.
But Suetonius who was separated from the period by over a hundred year less than this, and is the better authority, is emphatic, as has already been said, that Octavian was the only one of the three who showed no wish to bring the massacre to an end. Antony, in fact, appears to have been the first to feel shame for his atrocious behaviour; and at any rate there can be no doubt that he alone retained his popularity with Rome's democracy, whereas Octavian was detested.

Not to forget Antony conveniently using Octavian's absence to just abscond with the monetary portion of his inheritance that Calpurnia ever so conveniently entrusted him with.
And my personal favorite post-Caesar stabbing moment...
Sextus Pompeius having the triumvirate to dinner on one of his ships and serving Marcus Antonius the roast basically about how "I'd have invited you to have dinner at my house but you currently live in it bitch"
Also one Sextus' commanders asking him if he can just sink the ship and rid them of all their irksome enemies in one go
i think that the time between caesar’s assassination and octavian naming himself princeps is objectively the funniest period of roman history. just nonstop drama.

I didnt get the Odazai twitter joke?
Pffttt then maybe it wasn't a funny joke. What I was trying to say is that as far as I myself could see over there it's socially accepted to harass people over ships, and odazai is one of the bsd ships that's picked on the most for some known unknown reason, so you know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Solomon & Gaenor just fascinates me as a movie because I feel like it's a particularly interesting version of a cross-cultural romance. Like half the team was Jewish and the other half was Welsh and so while it's a movie about the capability of religion and community to be inflicted for incredible harm it manages to make that critique of both of the cultures of the protagonists in a way that doesn't feel disrespectful/two-dimensional to either culture. I mean this might not actually be true but that's how it feels watching it and I'm a little captivated by it

Can we talk about Verginius?
Not only did he persuade his slaves to not kill him for the money promised by the Triumvirs, so that they helped him get to Sicily (to Sextus), he also convinced the soldiers who were afther him, to follow him to Sicily to get money in a more honest way than killing a man. (yes ofc. he bribed them.)
The soldiers, afther getting payed, stayed with him in Sicily.
