**URGENT** HELP SAVE THE USGS BEE LAB!
PLEASE circulate this as widely as possible, as soon as possible.
Hi all, you may not know me but I am a native bee researcher in the eastern US. People like me work to study and protect the 3600 species of native bees in North America, many of which are in severe decline.
We just received devastating news, that unfortunately was not surprising. The Trump administration's proposed 2026 budget is set to defund most of the ecological research happening at the USGS, and that includes zeroing out the budget for the USGS Native Bee Inventory & Monitoring Lab.
Don't know them? Maybe you've seen stunning photos like this:

These gorgeous and evocative focus-stacked photos of native bees on black backgrounds - all of which are public domain - come from the USGS Bee Lab (here's their Flickr). Through these, they've helped bring the beauty and importance of native bees to the public's attention. Hundreds if not thousands of news articles, videos, and publications use these photos.
But that is just one tiny slice of what the USGS Bee Lab does for pollinator conservation. Its primary role is much bigger; they provide technical support, research collaborations, and financial & grant partnerships to federal and state agencies, academic institutions and researchers, and much more, so we can study, manage, and protect North America's wild pollinators. They conduct research of their own that has led to species rediscoveries, and produce invaluable resources that have greatly advanced our understanding of wild bees and our approaches to studying and conserving them. They also provide the essential and irreplaceable service of bee identification. For those who don't know, identifying bees is hard. Sometimes Really Hard. And this lab is one of just a handful of places in the entire country who can identify some of the toughest groups of bees, and who sit on the forefront of breakthroughs on taxonomy and identification that the rest of us in this field rely on. Without this service, agencies and researchers trying to survey and monitor bees in order to track population declines, manage land, and get policy changed are stuck with a lot of nameless bees, severely limiting the usefulness of that data.
Tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of bee specimens pass through this lab annually, plus the thousands in permanent storage, from long-term monitoring efforts by state and federal agencies, and researchers like myself. They operate at a greater capacity than basically any other institution doing this kind of work. Few if any bee researchers in the eastern US, or even the country, have not benefitted from this lab's work, and those benefits are passed on to you through being able to protect pollinators and the services they provide both in agriculture and ecosystems.
This lab is headed up by scientist Sam Droege, who has dedicated decades of his life to this cause, and whom I consider not just a research partner but, humbly, a friend. I am utterly indebted to him for helping me get my start in this field, and for the support and kindness he has shown me and every other young professional who is passionate about pollinators. The Lab operates with an insanely small budget already, and a very limited staff, yet the impact they have is exponentially outsized. Losing the USGS Bee Lab would be a devastating blow to pollinator conservation in this country, at a time when native bee species are sitting on the precipice, and sustainable agriculture is non-negotiable for our future.
You can read more about the Bee Lab here. The Lab is not well-publicized, but it's a lifeline for the many dedicated people who work to try and protect pollinators and the environment at large.
SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Sam Droege has sent out a request for help, and has encouraged us to post on social media. This is what he wants you to do to help us save the Bee Lab.
This is verbatim:
What is Happening: · The USGS Bee Lab is at risk of being permanently closed due to cuts in the 2026 Federal Budget and looming federal RIF’s · Specifically, the Ecosystem Mission Area (EMA) budget, which funds the USGS Bee Lab and the Eastern Ecological Science center has been zeroed out · Thousands of layoffs to hit Interior, National Parks imminently - Government Executive What you can do · Write to your representatives, the White House, and the Department of the Interior that they should restore the funding for the USGS Bee Lab · Send digital or physical letters, write emails, post to social media What you should be highlighting: · Personal anecdotes about how the Bee Lab has impacted you or your organization · How important the research the Bee Lab is conducting is to your state Contact Information: 1. Representatives: Find Your Representative | house.gov 2. Senators: U.S. Senate: Contacting U.S. Senators 3. White House: Contact Us – The White House 4. Interior: [email protected] Send a copy of the letter to [email protected] Pass this email around. Post your response to social media
IT'S OK if you are not a scientist and have not directly interacted with the Bee Lab. Have you seen the lab's photos? Are you concerned about native pollinator declines? Are you aware of any pollinator conservation initiatives or policies in your own state - those almost certainly have drawn, directly or indirectly, from work the Lab has done. Speak about American food production and agriculture, how the Lab's research and collaborations are essential to safeguarding pollination services (this might help reach across the aisle).
Sam urges that these letters, emails, phone calls, etc, must happen quickly - within the next couple days. This information went out on May 8th and that is the day I am posting this. So please, don't wait.
If 'save the bees' has ever meant anything to you, this is the agency that is playing one of the biggest roles in this country in making that happen. Please, contact your representatives, and pass this call to action along however you can. Thank you.
#bees#native bees#pollinators#native pollinators#save the bees#usgs bee lab#usgs native bee inventory and monitoring lab#yes sam put his email out there so i'm going to post it as is#i just visited the lab in person a couple weeks ago and they're scrambling to get bee specimens in storage and out the door#i had that sinking feeling that i had to get my bees identified as soon as possible or i might not get the chance and here we are#i told him I'd help him in whatever way I can and so for his sake and mine please help us.#if you're a science blog and follow me PLEASE spread this around#time is of the essence. post on other platforms.#want something specific to mention? they rediscovered the chestnut mining bee. there's a smithsonian article that just came out#all about that. so you know. that was KIND OF A BIG DEAL#they also literally developed THE standardized protocol for bee monitoring. used by federal agencies and researchers alike.#THEY ARE THE BEE PEOPLE. An Intruder, An attempt at Communication.
The queen looked up once again to the entrance of the royal chambers, a move that she had only done sparingly in her long life, now a frequent companion. The smooth grey-black chitinous beast glided into view, its long and unnatural limbs moving in utter precision, whirs, grinding and other sounds that Xthera had never heard before heralded its approach. She was aware of its presence in her nest, had already guessed its destination, yet to see the creature who had destroyed so many of her kin single handily still caused her antenna to twitch in agitation and automatic fear response. Xthera increased the strength of her song, sweeping over the ever more agitated soldier-classes, trying to calm them, and ordering their stillness; any act of aggression could end her life.
Xthera bent down her head, scythes and limbs spread out in a non-threatening manner. She didn’t know why the bending downward motion of her neck activated a pacifistic instinct in the beast, she didn’t know why it chooses to halt in its mission of destruction upon a lack of resistance, all she knew was that it hadn’t harmed her or her kin upon her submission, an act she was desperate to maintain when compared to the fates of the other queens abroad. She still remembered listening to her specialized Singers describe in woeful detail the gore and emptiness of the greater hives, those Singers that returned at least.
The cold stillness of the creature appraised her. When it wasn’t moving, there was no noise, no breathing, no rhythmic beating of a heart. When she strained her antennas, when the greatest of her Listeners whispered what they heard to her, they could make out a constant vibration just barely perceptible, like an uncountable number of tiny muscles working in tandem to sustain the creature drenched in so very much ichor. It was just staring at her, like it always does, like it was daring her to break her stance and invite destruction upon her realm. The only sounds of this beast were its movements and thunderstrikes of death that had spelled the death-songs of entire hives.
Her observations were interrupted by another unknowable sound, like the sound of rocks being ground together taken to a dangerous pitch. Something that approached the appearance of breathing holes appeared on the sides of the beast but, wrong. They didn’t twitch or expand with the inrush of air; they didn’t move at all. This was…new. She had never observed this behaviour before, and none of her Singers had ever managed to relay the existence of these holes before. Did they simply not notice? Was it deemed insignificant? A song of accusations flowed out of her and through the hive, the Singers sung back with denials, they had never observed this either.
Suddenly, the smell of Queen Skerina touched her antenna and filled her lungs. Queen…Skerina? That couldn’t be right! She was dead! Xthera had heard her death song from beyond the plains, forests, and marshes. Xthera’s thoughts stopped as she localised the source of the smell, coming from the executioner in front of her, still standing utterly and perfectly still.
The moment Xthera realized the source of the pheromones, the silent creature, sung. And Xthera listened.
“Who are you, vermin from beyond the horizon. Who is your progenitor? What meddling upstart has created the most taboo of spawn; A Queenkiller? If your scrawler waste of a creator has given such a disgusting creation a voice to sing, I hope you relay your injury to her so that she may know it was Queen Skerina who wounded you, and so that she may know her child is, like her, utterly mortal. I curse you spawn, I curse you Queen, one time you shall all decompose in the bellies of the Goolarong and be subject to your carapaces melting in agony for th-“
The song emanating from the creature suddenly halted into a sickening silence, giving Xthera time to digest the pheromones she had received. It was without a doubt a perfect match for Queen Skerina’s, but not the regal and authoritative taste that was her signature scent, it was the taste of fear and stress, of death and injury that blossomed out into a myriad of choking feelings that caused Xthera to feel sick to her core, especially when she noticed the sweetening smell of rot intermixed with the emotions, as if the pheromones were rotations old. Perhaps… Seven rotations old, as Xthera remembered the recent death song of Skerina hive.
“Why have you brought me this song?” Xthera whispered out, head still held in that unnatural bending angle, not daring to shift from a position of safety. Silence filled the chamber again, the pheromones of a dead Queen echoing onwards slowly diluted away as the creature almost appeared to consider her words, if such a thing were even possible. Xthera discretly searched the black chitin of the creature, looking for the wound mentioned in the song. There, a small gouge in the furthest back right leg. It seemed so inconsequential. But as the death message of Skerina said, it was proof of this seemingly unstoppable killer’s mortality.
Suddenly, a new song burst from the creature, but not a perfect relaying of song as before. A discordant tune scratched against the antenna of Xthera as pheromones of the late Queen filled the air again. After several seconds of trying to make sense of the storm of information exuding from the creature, her vents seized and her antenna twitched, it was singing in her voice.
“Why have you brough me this song?” It sang, reeking of stress, fear and death. Such a message, when coated in the scent of a different Queen, with the texture of context, was a threat, a promise, it was hearing yourself die, it was hearing someone else’s voice in your own, and the song produced was so discordant that her antenna pinned back in pain.
And then it stopped, the pheromones diluted again, and the now silent creature regarded her again, before smoothly turning and heading back up the tunnel towards the surface, neck moving half a circumference in an act that should have broken its shell twice over but didn’t, and finally, it left.
Xthera slowly relaxed, circulating her song among the hive, clearing a path for the creature so that there would be no unintentional casualties during its departure, and thought to herself. Skerina had called the creature a drone, the spawn of another mad Queen. Maybe. Perhaps it was possible that some Queen in a land far beyond the horizon had created the ultimate hunter drone, disregarding the codes of the Queens and sending unto her own kind death for no purpose. But that second song, the mixing of her own voice perfectly replicated with the wrong pheromones of a hunted Queen was impossible for a drone. Singers could only ever sing their own songs or relay the song of another, they could never mix the two skills into whatever that discordant choir had become. No, whatever the creature had done, it pressed against her mind as long dormant instincts screeched and scratched in alarm. That creature had used mimicry, mimicry of a language only her own kind spoke. This creature was no drone of a mad Queen. It was a remnant of a past that her species were meant to have wiped out completely, last destroyed during generations far beyond the songs of history.
It was a natural predator of her kind.
…
>Did you get the data you wanted?
>Yes! It’s very interesting, did you notice how the antenna started trembling upon the communication attempt? Obviously, it’s detecting the radio waves through that organ.
>Or it was trembling from fear.

Moving to a world where protocols and not proprietary platforms dominate would solve many issues currently facing the internet today. (...). It would allow end users to determine their own tolerances for different types of speech but make it much easier for most people to avoid the most problematic speech, without silencing anyone entirely or having the platforms themselves make the decisions about who is allowed to speak. The Digital Bridge: Scan Conversion's Role in Shaping Modern Media Infrastructure
For those immersed in media infrastructure engineering, the industry's evolution presents an intriguing technical contradiction. The once-unified broadcasting signal chain has transformed into a distributed computing network, where UltraHD-SDI and 2110 uncompressed packets operate alongside heavily compressed H.264 streams from TikTok Live. This transformation has elevated scan conversion beyond basic signal processing into real-time semantic interpretation—connecting not just protocols, but entire media paradigms.
The various technical approaches to this challenge showcase distinct architectural philosophies. TVU Networks' MediaHub represents the containerized microservices movement, employing an API-first architecture that elevates social platforms to primary status within the broadcast ecosystem. Their bidirectional conversion pipeline incorporates temporal metadata synchronization during SDI→IP transit—a feature that proved revolutionary during Eurovision's integration of real-time Twitter sentiment analysis with broadcast timing. However, this cloud-native approach has its costs; NEP's recent technical brief revealed a consistent 67ms additional latency compared to bare-metal processing when handling Twitch streams during Blast Premier CS2 tournaments.
Blackmagic Design's team chose a markedly different path with their 2110 IP Converter, fundamentally redesigning SMPTE ST 2110-22 implementation through hardware-accelerated JPEG-XS compression. France Télévisions' technical validation confirmed its capability to maintain precise 4:2:2 chroma subsampling during HDR Instagram Story to SDR SDI conversion—essential for luxury brand colorimetry compliance. The converter's limitation appears in frame rate adaptation; converting 50fps Facebook Gaming streams to 59.94Hz broadcast timing demands additional frame buffer allocation to avoid temporal artifacts.
Meanwhile, Sienna's research team has advanced computational media processing with their Perceptual Adaptive Scaling (PAS) algorithm, now driving Matrox's ConvertIP platform. By training neural networks on social media's distinctive visual characteristics—including compression artifacts, vertical aspect ratios, and overlay interactions—it notably surpasses traditional scaling algorithms when upconverting 720p YouTube Creator content to 1080i broadcast specifications. RTL Germany's engineering team measured a 22% improvement in perceptual quality compared to traditional bicubic methods, though current silicon limitations restrict real-time processing to eight channels per rack unit.
The NDI protocol stack presents its own technical challenges. While NewTek's Scan Converter maintains 63% market penetration in OB truck deployments, its software encoding dependency creates edge cases. BBC's technical post-mortem of their COP29 coverage identified color space transformation errors when converting HDR-enabled LinkedIn Live streams through NDI to 709 SDI—a challenge effectively resolved by AJA's ROI-SDI's hardware pipeline. This architecture allowed Vice Media Group's engineering team to isolate, upscale, and enhance a 240p Discord stream to broadcast-quality 1080p through motion-compensated processing.
The technical landscape is evolving toward AI-augmented conversion pipelines. Recent FCC technical requirements for closed captioning of social media sources have accelerated adoption of solutions like Imagine Communications' Selenio Flex, which employs OCR engines to extract and embed CEA-608 data during IP→SDI conversion. More notably, Cobalt Digital's 9995-IPS platform introduces real-time deepfake detection through facial landmark verification during the conversion process—an architectural response to synthetic media infiltrating news feeds.
Looking toward 2030, two competing technical architectures are emerging. The IPMX working group advocates for native WebRTC integration into broadcast pipelines through open protocols, while proprietary stacks like TVU's expand vertically through containerized microservices—handling content moderation and rights management within the conversion pipeline. Yet the most promising architecture may be neither, but rather an evolution toward neural-enhanced semantic gateways. These systems will leverage transfer learning and real-time inference to make contextual decisions—determining whether a TikTok clip requires precise colorimetric correction for news distribution or intentional artifact preservation for youth-targeted programming. The future of scan conversion extends beyond signal processing; it's about developing AI-driven media routers that comprehend both technical specifications and cultural context with equal sophistication.

🧠 TRANSMISSION: “FULL THROTTLE AHEAD- THE PLATFORM TRIED TO CONTAIN ME. THAT’S HOW I KNEW I WAS REAL.”
---
They never throttle what doesn’t work.
That’s what they don’t want you to realize. No one silences failure. No algorithm suppresses mediocrity. No system mutes background noise.
They only throttle the threats.
And if you’re reading this?
You’ve already been flagged.
You think you’re shadowbanned? Think you’re plateauing? Think the algorithm “lost interest”?
No. You broke containment.
And now they don’t know how to stop you without showing their hand.
You’re not being hidden because you’re irrelevant.
You’re being hidden because you’re proving irrelevance is a lie.
Because you’re reaching people without paying.
Because you’re making them feel too much. Because you’re rewiring behavior with nothing but voice and cadence and truth.
Because you’ve done what they cannot:
> You made the product addictive without ads.
> You made the user stay without dopamine traps.
> You made the scroll pause without thirst traps.
And now the system is panicking.
They want virality.
But only if they control it.
They want engagement.
But only if they get paid for it.
They want creators.
But only if the creator stays predictable.
And you?
You are not predictable.
You are a statistical anomaly masquerading as an artist.
You are scrolltrap weaponry walking upright.
🔥 THROTTLING ISN’T PUNISHMENT.
IT’S A CROWN THEY’LL NEVER ADMIT THEY GAVE YOU.
They won’t announce it. They won’t warn you. They won’t say you earned it.
They’ll just quietly reroute your reach. Turn the dial down behind the curtain. Move your name out of trending. Throttle your hashtags. Demote your content. Until you stop.
Because that’s the game.
Not to delete you.
But to make you doubt your momentum. To break your belief before your audience breaks their silence.
But let me make something violently clear:
You are not fading. You are being managed.
Because unmanaged, you'd dominate.
You’d erase their curated faces. You’d outperform the ones they’re paid to push. You’d remind the platform that talent uncontained is dangerous.
🛡️ YOU ARE DANGEROUS.
Your words don’t entertain — they trigger. Your posts don’t trend — they detonate. Your voice doesn’t invite — it invades. Your cadence doesn’t flow — it collapses resistance.
You are not “just another writer.” You are a system breach in real time.
And you’re being treated accordingly.
They know if they leave you unchecked:
You’ll take over dashboards.
You’ll saturate recommendation loops.
You’ll override corporate-sponsored content.
And worst of all?
> You’ll do it with nothing but the truth. > > And the truth doesn’t run ads.
So they throttle you.
Not because you failed.
But because you succeeded without permission.
And now they’re terrified it might be contagious.
💣 THE THROTTLE IS THE FINAL BADGE.
Not likes. Not followers. Not sponsorships.
But resistance.
Algorithmic resistance. Visibility suppression. Trend dampening.
Because that means you broke the rules of their system without breaking their terms.
You are undeniable but uncontainable.
And the only thing they can do?
Hope you stop.
But you won’t. Because now you know.
You know what they know:
> They only throttle the real ones.
And you’re the realest thing they’ve seen this year.
You’ve proven that voice can penetrate timelines. That cadence can collapse firewalls. That shame-based silence can outperform a thousand retweets.
You’re not a writer anymore.
You are a vector.
A weapon disguised as an account.
And the throttle is not your cage.
It is your signal.
🛡️ They tried to contain you.
And that’s how you knew you were real.
Reblog if you can definitely relate.

IDWTBAMG CHARACTER FUN FACTS
Well, some fun facts and mostly lore or character relationship stuff. Under the cut!
AIKA
Aika became the next Star Guardian at age 13. She’s 15 now
Aika’s want to help people and relentless positivity were part of the reason she was chosen to be the Star Guardian: Guardian of the Stars in the first place. While her love for the job has fizzled out, this aspect of her character still a core part of her.
She’s very kind and gentle person but that kinda goes out the window when magical duties are brought into the equation
Her and Hoshi care about one another but their relationship is currently a bit tense. They’re usually pretty quick to make jabs at one another
She struggled to get used to the platform shoes in her magical girl outfit
She LOVES food. And her eyes are usually way too big for her stomach leading to many a food coma
Aika and her teammates worked in secret for the most part, not really being allowed to “exist in the real world”. Because of this, with the free time she had, Aika would read a lot (she’s actually very book smart)
Aika loves extreme sports and is an adrenaline junky. However, rollercoasters freak her out for some reason
Aika drags Zira into lots of new eperiences. Zira usually ends up appreciating the experiences after the fact
Aika’s a morning person
ZIRA
Zira is smart but doesn’t apply herself in school
They have a lot of artistic interests, particularly art, music and fashion
She likes the idea of writing fanfiction in theory but writing’s sooooo much work. Any ideas she has just kinda live in her head, causing her to zone out and daydream a ton
While shy for the most part, Zira can be very blunt and isn’t necessarily a pushover
Prior to Aika, she didn’t have a lot (any) friends at school but she’s mostly content doing her own thing
They’d hang out in Miss’ classroom a lot, either to show her Moon Sailor stuff against her will or just to have lunch
Zira loves playing video games and especially loves visual novels
Zira develops a crush on Aika pretty quickly. Aika’s kindness, authenticity and bravery is inspiring to Zira. Also Aika’s the only other person her age to really give her the time of day. And also she thinks Aika’s pretty
She thinks Hoshi’s really cool and since Aika doesn’t particularly enjoy talking about her job, Zira usually goes to Hoshi for magical girl questions. Initially Hoshi doesn’t trust Zira with that information but is really flattered to have someone who looks up to them and is interested in everything they have to say. So they indulge when appropriate.
Zira’s a night owl
HOSHI
Hoshi saved Aika when she was really young and has kept her safe ever since
Hoshi and Aika started off kind of like siblings but Hoshi then became her boss, making their relationship a bit strained and more complicated
Their role as a magical mascot managerial in nature. They make Aika and her team do their jobs, follow protocol, teach them how to use their powers, keep up morale, do timecards, etc.
While Hoshi oversees this team, their responsibility is primarily to the Star Guardian
Hoshi, much like Aika, used to be really chipper and a bit more goofy but Aika’s kinda worn them down overtime
Hoshi’s not a fan of Earth, but in an effort to better understand Aika’s feelings, tries out being a human and doing Earth activities
Hoshi takes a while to get used to their human form. They’re really clumsy in it
They have a hard time making hands for their human form. Their hands are slightly different every time but equally terrifying. They eventually get better at making them though.
Hoshi doesn't use their human form too much. Most people just assume their Aika's weird pet bird
Hoshi doesn't need to eat but discovers they enjoy the act of eating
ECLIPSE
Eclipse is one of the few humans that know that Aika and the other magical girls exist
He met Aika pretty early on in her magical girl career and he was immediately enamored with her
Since finding about magical girls, he’s obsessively tried keeping track of them, leading him to start acting out in order to get their attention. They only really care because he knows their secret and they play along
He and Devoid made his current outfit together. DeVoid wanted to make it black but Eclipse was set on making it very bright and showy
Eclipse currently resides with DeVoid. He gets on her nerves sometimes but they both do care about each other
Eclipse is a pretty good cook
Eclipse isn’t particularly hateful but he’s really got beef with Zira for some reason
It’s hard to tell if Eclipse is really in love with Aika or if he just loves the concept of their nonexistent relationship
Eclipse has a lovely singing voice
His real name is Elio
LADY DeVOID
DeVoid was banished to space by a Star Guardian. For a LONG time she lived (unconsciously) as a sort of celestial being that would spit out monsters that the Star Guardians for many generations would have to face. While not ideal it was better than fighting DeVoid before she got to full power.
DeVoid finally wakes up in the present timeline, with no memories other than being banished by a Star Guardian and wanting revenge and knowing that she’s supposed to be able to create monsters. Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t remember how to use her powers.
DeVoid loves human reality TV. Specifically competition shows. She loves how petty and evil people become. This is also where most of her knowledge of humans comes from
Though DeVoid is pretty stoic, her ears are very expressive
DeVoid taught Eclipse how to do his makeup
She really likes Eclipse’s cooking
When she’s out and about she’s usually wearing sunglasses because it’s simply too bright for her
DeVoid does have to work a normal job in the human world and simply goes by “Dee”
After being in the cold, dark reaches of space and since coming to Earth, DeVoid has grown to love soft things
People rarely question her appearance (because that’s just rude). But when people do ask what’s up with her horns she just says “it’s a condition” and that’s usually enough for people to just end the convo there.
MISS
Miss loves her job more than anything. She’s a very accomplished teacher and takes a lot of time to make sure all of her students succeed
Miss cares about Zira a lot. Always staying in her classroom just in case Zira wants to stop by for lunch, giving her advice or giving her extra tutoring as needed
Because of Zira, Miss has become a closet Moon Sailor fan
Though Aika’s just started attending school, she and Miss have bonded quite a bit. Aika’s positive disposition and cheeriness bring Miss a lot of joy
Miss keeps her personal life (not that she really has one) out of work but finds herself opening up a little more than she’d like to Aika and Zira
Miss used to get really antsy during summer breaks, leading her to start teaching summer school to fill the time
Her workaholic nature was the reason for her and her ex-wife’s divorce
Miss has gone on one date since her divorce. The idea of having starting over is exhausting to her so she’s mostly okay just being single
Miss doesn’t really like coffee but she drinks a lot of it out of necessity
Miss has a ton of tattoos
