It's not just about the word "sentient" -- most speculative fiction reads like it's written by someone who's never heard of animals, and once I notice this, I can never unnotice it.
So many fictional stories center on "What if there were these beings who were different from humans? Like aliens, or elves, or talking rabbits who wear clothes?" And yeah! I love stories like that!
But there are also literally millions of non-human species right here on Earth!
We just don't understand them. We want to think about "What if there were a species of life forms that weren't humans?" but we're so locked into our cholesterol-based human brains that we can't really imagine being one of these other species. So we either imagine other species in an anthropomorphic way ("What if a fox wore clothes and had a job and spoke English?") or imagine a completely fictional type of life form ("What if there were beings that were like humans, but they could live for hundreds of years or more, or they could read minds, or they could teleport, or?") and I, once again I must reiterate, I love stories like that.
But the appeal of these stories is that it's easier for us, as humans, to imagine and empathize with a robot, or an alien, or a mermaid, with human-like thought processes, than it is for us to imagine or empathize with an octopus, or a canary, or a beetle. Let alone a tree, or a lichen, or a mushroom. I find it so disappointing when a story featuring nonhuman beings just reifies the human/animal binary by reframing it as "higher creatures/lower creatures" or "sentient/non-sentient" or "intelligent/non-intelligent."
Usually when I mention this to people, their response is, "Okay, if 'sentient' is the wrong word, what word is better? Sapient? Intelligent?" and no. I'm not saying you're using the wrong vocabulary word with the wrong precise meaning. I'm saying you need to radically, fundamentally reexamine your base assumptions about the human/animal binary. You don't need to find a different word to express the assumption that non-human animals don't think, feel, communicate, learn, or solve problems; you need to actually start understanding that non-human animals do, in fact, think, feel, communicate, learn, and solve problems.
I only started thinking about the human/animal binary as an outgrowth of my interest in disability rights and youth rights, since so many of the purported things that make humans essentially different from "animals" are also things that exclude children and some disabled people. Oh, humans can talk and animals can't? So preverbal children and nonverbal disabled people aren't human?
Sometimes animal people invite this comparison themselves, saying things like "A dog is as intelligent as a 3 year old child." I mean, no, that's not true, a 3 year old human isn't as good at, say, scent tracking, as a dog of any age, but more fundamentally, a 3 year old human child is, in fact, human. And then some animal people like Peter Singer will actively spell out that a nonhuman animal should have more human rights than a disabled human child. The fact that "intelligence" is a concept always invoked in animal discussions, and that pet-keepers often self-identify as "parents," is proof that we can't seriously build the underpinnings of disability and youth liberation without problematizing the human/animal binary.
One time in a fandom group my partner pointed out that nonhuman animals are, in fact, sentient, and somebody responded sneeringly "You must be a vegan." Now, they're not a vegan (neither am I), but what a comeback. "You only acknowledge that animals have thoughts and feelings because you don't eat them!" My man, my dude, if acknowledging the reality that animals are thinking, feeling beings makes you feel weird about eating them, that's something you have to reconcile within yourself. You don't get to deny reality about it.
And ultimately, I do understand why stories about humans interacting with nonhumans tend to anthropomorphize the nonhumans -- because these stories are written by humans, read by humans, interpreted through the lens of human understanding. We really can't understand what it's like to be a frog or a salmon or a hippopotamus. I can't really know what it's like to feel the air change with my antennae, or process information through my octopus arm. That's our limitation. But I wish we would be more aware that we don't know what we don't know.
The best story I've read that really confronts the human/animal binary in all its existential absurdity is the Animal Man volume by Grant Morrison. Animal Man realizes that the human/animal binary is meaningless, becomes an eco-terrorist about it, has an existential crisis, realizes he's a fictional character in someone else's story, and confronts his creator. We're all God's creatures, and xe's fucking with us. Only logical reaction, really.

End of pride month and forlornly thinking about belonging in a nonhuman way. Head in paws because one simply cannot platonically go, I am your 🫵 plush rabbit robot thing because of society and such. Sure, it would be weird species euphoria to be gifted on a whim a collar or that kind of dog tag thing or ribbons and such but that is insane and earnest

the fun thing about wfm au fics is what terrible thing will you do to suletta's nonhuman companions. will aerial be a horse will eri be a robot will she go beep boop or will she have an existential crisis. will she be a ghost or maybe a rabbit, the two things to be? will aerial be a really fun muscle car and will suletta be the greaser delinquent who loves her more than anything will eri be the fuzzy dice that hangs from the rearview mirror

Thinking about the angst potential that specific building quirks have . Please let me elaborate ,
(boy I'm yapping in here you're warned)
So the bots have pretty much embraced their silly and nonhuman nature right but the "wanting to be human" thing doesn't really seem like something that you could get rid of that easily, especially since they were designed to be as human as possible and trying to fit in is already as difficult as it is. Now imagine that you're literally The only person that feels like you Actually
Getting into the specific part, all the bots Do have the same purpose but their ways of achieving/approaching it are all different (this is where I get into the Making Shit Up part) - The Jon feels like the one that was designed to be the most human-like in functionality (runs on Pepsi [humans drink that right?], human fingers [probably the one that can feel the most physically]) and Peter leaning into that while building him just feels right but that would be so fucked up for him
Do not fact check me on this one but do we even know how good the senses of the bots are bc imagine he's literally the only one to actually be able to smell things or feel textures well (I'm not making sense please bear with me), his siblings just think he's making stuff up most of the time and those are the ppl he's supposed to relate to in this kind of problem. This is also why he's all fucked up inside he doesn't know how much Feel is normal
Hatchworth's years or being a butler + trapped in vault probably fucked up how he perceives relationships in general - He's your friend ! He's at your service ! PLEASE GOD AM I USEFUL ENOUGH . AM I WORTH HAVING AROUND THIS TIME . I PROMISE I WON'T BE A PROBLEM <- ok no that's the projection showing . But abandonment issues (and claustrophobia/fear of the dark) are definitely there, plus aromantic hatchworth is literally canon to me sorry that also affects how different he feels about people than his siblings. Literally programmed to be useful but doesn't know how to interact with people in a healthy way woww
Upgrade was definitely designed to be just visually great to me, she's stiff not because Erin is just really good at what she does but because her insides aren't as polished and thought out, this robot moves by miracle. She's obsessed with being pretty because she thinks this is the only thing she could ever achieve and being intimidating can only hide so much
And Zer0 . Sigh Zer0 there's so much I could say about him I think about him so much it's really baffling to me I never draw him </3
First just the cultural shock of being freed from the basement must have been INSANE that's already so fucked, but all the upgrades basically gave him a fully new body and that just adds to the whole 'new thing' fear/anxiety. He does not know what is going on and he can't even ask his siblings because he thinks these are normal things his body is supposed to be doing - most of the time they aren't. He doesn't know how to regulate shit and breaks way too often to learn what's healthy for him
I could yap about the spine's and rabbit relationship with humanity all day and how that relates to how they work but I'm not gonna bc this is already barely coherent and I'm so tired
#this is the making stuff up hour don't expect coherent sentences here sorry everyone#Domingo a las 5 de la tarde#spg#steam powered giraffe#the jon spg#upgrade spg#hatchworth spg#Zer0 spg#not tagging the other two bc I didn't really say anything about them#this is the first take of the Thoughts im not going back to edit it . have whatever I threw up this time I don't want to see it

Before the reveal of Monstrous and the like what was Glitter and Guilt's world's relationship with the supernatural? Like public perception and such
Cause I know they have magical girls and the wonder woman hero, but is stuff like other dimensions, time travel, mythical creatures and idk Kaiju common?
So, the main setting Glitter and Guilt takes place in is Decking City. It's the 52nd state of the United States and located on the same Earth all my other Earth based stories take place on.
Earth in the Rockyverse has experienced a LOT of wild stuff. There's a little rubberhose serial killer rabbit running around, rumors of a secret manmade planet in the solar system that is said to house both humans AND aliens, a whole mermaid civilization deep in the sea, the literal antichrist walking around in some random American town, the list goes on.
It's a lot. And it really depends on where you're living on Earth that determines how people view the otherworldly. Not everyone is aware of the wild side of reality while others are just "Yep, just another day" while sipping coffee.
But I imagine you are just asking about Decking City itself. Decking City is home to a lot of wild stuff. It's known as the hero capital of the world. So weird shit is not out of the question and is very much expected. Decking City has as many people to move in as it has to move out as well as a ton of tourists who want to experience the wild life of practically living in a comic book.
There's literally anti-Kaiju alarms the city has built into the city to blare a warning about any oncoming Kaiju and direct them away from builds like hospitals and schools. The subway trains and general public transportation frequently have faces and eyes painted on them to deter Kaiju because for some reason-the big guys do not like being perceived like that.
Monstrums are just another element that gets introduced to an already wild city.
I think the best way to view Decking City is to look at it the same way we view Florida with the "Florida Man" effect.
There are so many crazy things that happen that I literally can't list them all because it's kind of just...all over the place? There's heroes, villains, nonhumans, robots, beings from other dimensions--HONESTLY not really any limits as Glitter and Guilt is a story I am not placing a ton of restraints on myself so I can explore just about any storyline I want for Sweetheart and Bitterbat.

xc2 gender and sexuality hcs because it's hashtag pride month and I've been replaying it
Rex (he/him/any): very bisexual methinks. like obviously there's his wives of whom he loves dearly but there's also his blonde boytoy in the Torture Chamber of whom he also loves dearly. as for gender, I think he's confident in his identity as a man, and isn't afraid to play around with it a bit. for the most part he's pretty masculine, but he doesn't mind if you refer to him in other ways
Pyra (she/her and any fire themed neopronoun): she's like if a girl was soft and malleable. also very bisexual, with an equal preference for any gender. I think she's a girl in the way that you'd describe girlhood to someone who knows nothing about it and they went "oh yeah that's me" if you catch my drift. I can't explain it any better she's just Squishy
Mythra (she/it): bisexual lesbian methinks. has a major preference for women but Rex is that one exception that she's absolutely enamoured with. I think she's also pretty confident in her girlhood, but it's that very sharp and spiky rabid animal girlhood. she won't hesitate to bite you (as I'm typing this I realize her and Pyra are literally that "girlhood is a spectrum" image with the super soft looking bunny and that terrifying rabbit with the wide eyes)
Nia (she/he/they): I don't think she pays a whole ton of attention to specific labels. definitely trans, but I can never decide in which direction. common fanon is mtf but I've always interpreted her moreso as nonbinary, so I'm not sure which one I lean with more. but! transgender regardless! and as for sexuality, she's probably pan. just as long as you're pretty and/or handsome she doesn't really care
Dromarch (he/him): like he said, he's too old for romance. aroace and confidently masculine. his real gender is tiger
Mòrag (she/he): butch lesbian. enough said.
Brighid (they/she): she gives off femme nonbinary lesbian vibes. something about her isn't woman but it isn't man either. I think she likes to get silly with it. definitely enjoys being feminine though (and Mòrag enjoys it too)
Zeke (he/they): genderqueer man methinks. he absolutely loves to get crazy with it. enjoys and wholeheartedly loves his masculinity. he has the vibe of those dudes who put on their girlfriends silly tanktops while they're away or wear the most gorgeous dresses you've ever seen. I also think he's the kinda guy to go "I'm straight, but," all the time while everyone screams at him that he's bisexual. he definitely is, but doesn't want to admit it. for what reason? who knows
Pandoria (she/her and a million neos): I think she'd use incredibly niche labels. like omnisexual and the most hyperspecific xenogender you've ever seen. she probably has a whole stockpile of labels she enjoys that she just plays around with at any given day
Tora (he/she): tbh. I think he gets a little transgenderism. as a treat. I've seen people say that the real reason he dressed up Poppi in so many frilly girly outfits is because he was confusing attraction and personal desire, so what he actually wanted was for himself to wear those outfits. I think as she's grown, especially around so many strong role models who are women, she's come to terms with her femininity and allowed herself to dabble in both worlds. I place a tentative bigender and simultaneous straight/lesbian label on him (moral of the story, he likes girls)
Poppi (she/her and robot themed neos when gear's in the mood): rtf. robot to female. transgender in the convoluted nonhuman way. I think she's definitely on the aroace spectrum but still can still have affinities for anyone. so pansexual
#leechies rambles#xc2#Xenoblade Chronicles 2#Xenoblade#xenoblade 2#pride#pride month#xenoblade headcanon#to expand on Mòrag rq though - she presents a bit more feminine for the masses but prefers to be more masculine in personal scenarios#she eventually lets herself reveal both parts of her to the public but everyone just went “yeah makes sense” and went on with their days#it was really only her that was worrying about it (Brighid knew it would be fine)

🍷 📺 [insert realistic heart emoji here] !!!
🍷 does our music taste differ from alter to alter?
no, it doesnt lol, we all listen to the same songs pretty much but some of us in the past have identified with a specific song or been an introject based off a song (ex: deathbody ghost and pals was a real girl once)
📻 do you experience amnesia?
yeah kind of? we still know what happened its just that the details are fuzzy To Be Honest
🫀do you have non human alters?
unm well Yes. im not going to list all of tjem since we were a system of around 1000+ before a lot of us merged and i’d say a good 75% were nonhuman in some way. some noteworthy mentions are:
- girl made of wires
- looked like jonathon sims tma but with crow features (feathers, talons, etc) <- introject of the narrator from STP
- many such cases of bird wings and tails (dog, rabbit, goat?)
- one of our endermen ocs (kind of catlike, resembled a fursona)
- space boy <- THIS ONE IS ME! my hair is like purple with stars in it. My name is cosmos smiles smiles :)
- sheep boy
- squid
- tree person? question mark?
- robot (introject of an oc)
- robot (introject of tamari reckless battery burns)
- some angel whore (my friends oc. hi jay if you’re reading this)
- catboy
- a literal god (introject of an oc)
- many such instances of hello charlotte introjects (most of which were nonhuman in some way). seriously there was q84 v19 two different vincents and like 4 charlottes, a frei and scarlett
- girl who is a mutilated corpse
- partially human partially marble statue. (hi adamandi mutuals yes it is ambrose bassford)
- strange spiraling shape (MICHAEL DISTORTION!)
- man so full of spiders (introject of a tma oc)
- boy wuo is an owl
aaaaand many more but this post is long enough as is. ^_^ !

my version of gregory (and rabbit by proxy) ARE nonhuman but aren't a clone or robot copy of some other character. They have their own weird thing going on lol. he is like some sort of cryptid to me
tbh gregbot as a theory is so boring. like cmon that's charlies thing. let her have her thing. and let gregory be his own damn character.
#cant say much because fic spoilers#like major ones#i just love characters who are a little bit left of human okay?#gregory fnaf#dr. rabbit ggy#ggy#in general i don't like that there are literal androids in fnaf at all honestly

personal info
i use she/it/he pronouns (no they/them) and i like being referred to with both masculine and feminine terms. i prefer canine vivterms, but ones related to my other kintypes are welcome too. i don't need a name. i'm 19, born in '06. i am autistic and somewhere on the schizophrenic spectrum, and mentally ill. i am also physically disabled, with chronic joint pain that often affects my mobility. i am mixed; white & native Canadian. I was born and raised in Ontario, Canada, and I still live here. I don't plan on moving outside of the country.
i've been active in nonhuman communities (mainly on tumblr) on and off for years. i would describe my kintypes as mainly psychological, but also partly spiritual
kintypes:
kinfirmed kintypes: domestic dog (Leonberger, maybe other breeds as well), wolf (dark brown & black Northwestern/Mackenzie Valley Wolf), rabbit (grey & white Cashmere Lop), fallen angel/demon, black shuck, vampire (Strigoi Viu)
hearttypes: crow, pigeon, human
questioning kintypes: dragon, fox, raccoon, horse, doll, plushie, hyena, bear, hamster, some sort of undead (separate from my vampirism), something deity-adjacent (separate from my fallen angel and black shuck kintypes), some sort of robot or machine, some kind of bird
i am a practicing pagan witch (my sideblog dedicated to my practice is @magnoliamage), and am very interested in philosophy and religion & spirituality.
other interests of mine include:
music (some of my favourite bands include Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins, The Cure, The Clash, The Smiths, and Ghost)
fashion & makeup (especially alternative fashion and makeup, i'm goth myself and almost all of my friends are some flavour of alternative as well)
art (i enjoy writing, drawing, painting, scrapbooking, and photography)
movies and TV (my favourite movies and shows include House M.D, Hannibal, Whiplash, Fight Club, The Mandalorian, Spirited Away, The Boys, The Batman, Invincible, and many others)
Marvel movies and shows (i'm not very proud of this as i don't approve of a lot of their more recent decisions, but it's been my main special interest for about 11 years now and there's no way to change that. i have very strong opinions about the MCU, so i'm not always into talking about Marvel, as it can get really emotionally overwhelming sometimes)
video games (i mainly play ACNH and Stardew Valley rn, but i also really enjoy Death and Taxes, the Playstation Spider-Man games, Palia, and Spiritfarer)
YouTube (my favourite creators include Dan & Phil, Drew Gooden, Danny Gonzalez, Markiplier, Saji Sharma, Jerma, Tomska, Kat Blaque, Nyx Fears, Kurtis Conner, and many more. i spend way too much time watching YouTube videos)
this is just a sideblog - my main blog is @rushnpush, so i will interact from there

organization
original posts will be tagged with #ib.original and reblogs will be tagged with #rb
textposts will be tagged with #text, pictures will be tagged with #pic, gifs will be tagged with #gif, and videos will be tagged with #vid
posts pertaining to specific kintypes will be tagged appropriately; #wolf, #dog, #rabbit, #vamp, #fallen angel, etc.
i will probably reblog term coining posts, either because i feel they fit me or because i hope to make them known to beings that might identify with them. those posts will be tagged with #coin
original posts will be tagged with nonhuman/alterhuman related tags for reach, but reblogs likely won't be

this post will likely be updated and altered quite frequently to be most accurate
