"Prometheus" Raincode Minibang 2025

(CH.5 MDA: RAIN CODE SPOILERS BELOW!)

Super happy to have gotten to participate in this Rain Code Minibang hosted by @snivyartjpeg ! I got the honour of making an illustration based on @draconicsparkle's Makoto and Yuma-centric fanfic, "Prometheus"! <- Which you can read here!

I wanted to try and capture the different emotions Draconic wrote about that Makoto went through during his experience in the lab: The hopelessness, fear, and the revelation of how much harm the scientists were willing to bring to him to achieve their goals.

I really like the end product and composition of this, but unfortunately, most of my memories for this drawing are associated with a boatload of stress. 4 days before the deadline of June 30th my cat sat on my computer and ended up corrupting my file for the drawing. (And knowing how slow of an artist I am, a terrible panic-driven crash out followed. No cats were harmed ofc, just my soul.) I had to trace over everything from the one screenshot I got before it all happened and redo all the rendering work with the time I had. 😭😭 So if it looks scrappy in places, that's why.

That aside, I still had fun doing the expressions and lighting for this! Everyone working on this project was so nice and understanding. It was such a pleasant environment to be in! :3

In which Makoto manages Kanai Ward's museum (formerly Ginma Dictrict's Art Gallery) during a time of festivities and old painful memories flood his mind.

I still can't believe that it's now been 2 years since this game came out and I'm still in love with the story and its characters... so I made a fic about my love for it! This Minibang has provided me the opportunity to do so, along with working with other Rain Code fic writers and artists. ^^

I won't lie, writing this piece was a little difficult as I've drawn some of Makoto's emotions from my own past experiences along with trying to brainstorm everything so that it all makes sense for a possible canon compliant story. But it all worked out in the end and I couldn't be more happier!

Special thanks to @jixuanji and Smollrawr for collabing with me and making beautiful arts for this fic and to @draconicsparkle for betareading! You guys are amazing! 💜

The Man Who Missed the Zombie Apocalypse

In all of Kanai Ward, there was one man equipped to survive when the homunculi broke loose.  It’d be an amazing feat, if it had been done on purpose.  But, he hadn’t known.  The man, underwater in a submarine, missed the Blank Week entirely. Or, In which Makoto orchestrates the death of the last human in Kanai Ward.

It's finally time to post my piece for the Rain Code 2025 minibang! I had a lot going on while writing this, but it was so fun to work with this piece, and with my partners @maukuja and @enviousennui!

Swish… Swoosh…

The tides crooned along the seashore, a soft melody rising above the crackle of a warm campfire. The sky had deepened to a navy blue, like a cozy blanket tucking in the yawning sun. In the distance, a lone vine-covered house glowed gently beneath a canvas of diamond stars.

-They say a benevolent witch once lived there. One who specialized in healing potions.

“...”

…You’ve never heard of them?

“...”

I see. You must be here searching for something else; A new story, perhaps.

In that case, come take a seat. I'll tell you the tale of how a witch named Yakou Furio met five peculiar individuals in that house…

I also want to say a big thank you to @linferry and @Pudding Milk for their beautiful accompanying illustrations- both of them are so talented and amazing!! (/≧▽≦)/\(≧▽≦\) So, be sure to check out their art and send them lots of love!!!

To preserve some mysteries in my piece (O:)), I am just going to post my comments about it under spoilers below (if anyone who has finished reading and wants to know more):

First of, let's say half the reason I created this piece was because I love mysteries and fairytales! It was so much fun finding fairytale parallels for each character, and sneaking in little details between lines to hint at these comparisons with a Rain Code spin! I could probably ramble on and on about the backgrounds/ shenanigans of their fairytale versions, but I won't do that here because that would be WAY too long x'D

The other half of the reason was because of Rain Code's epilogue. Before everyone left Kanai Ward, they each addressed/ thanked the Chief- but he was not there in person to hear it… :') So if he had met the others long before the letter, would things turned out differently? Would he still have gone through with his revenge, driven by his love for his wife? Could it be resolved through other means in this AU? What kind of ending would they have in this fairytale? I will leave that decision in your hands.

After writing this fic in a fairytale prose style, I also realized I can play around with the narrator to be more immersive... and then a certain someone (O:)) took over because he is just too powerful and all-knowing x'D Again, there is more background/ settings in this AU, but I can't fit that in or I'll risk going overboard 😅😅 I have also considered making a choose-your-own-journey-style sequel, but it's a lot of work (6 character routes...?) So, we shall see if I ever feel up to making it happen one day...

Anyway, in short: It was super fun for me to experiment and play around with this piece! I sincerely hope it was just as interesting for you to read and imagine!! :)
