Hey folks! Just for the occasion, here is an assortment of doodles. Most of these came from the UT OC tournaments that went down this month, they were really fun to do.

OC DUMP???? OC DUMP. So this is gonna include the following above idiots. The top three I have posted, the bottom four I have not. From left-to right, they are: Drake: Overprotective daemon uncle. Skilled with magic. Roc: Drake's young sweet-and-spicy nephew. Alph: Resident angel boy, and Drake's best friend. Lutet: Chipper med student. Fan of the occult. Teryl: The team's voice of reason. Very blunt. Ebony: Local indie musician with a dark side job. Chicory: Roc's best friend and fire magic specialist. The first five are involved in the main group of the Ganymede (though Ebony and Cory get involved later too, to say the least!), who fight off a strange magical plague that transforms people into insectoid monsters. There's your crash course!! And just so I don't blow your head off, the big huge art dump is below the cut!!

What do you think Stephanie does when she’s alone? Does she have any canon hobbies besides crime fighting and linking up with various vigilantes?

Not that I'm aware of, at least not canonically.

I mean, there's sewing of course -- unless you're Brian Q. Miller and that's too girly a skill for your special Not-Like-Other-Girls hero. And journaling, possibly including art/cartooning embellishments since she has been shown to draw or doodle on occasion, though it's been a very long time since we last got a "Dear Dairy" " caption from her. (Which really is a waste given how elaborate journaling as a hobby has gotten -- imagine the fun that could be had from like, filling the gutters with her bullet-journaling notes)

And there's been the occasional one-off hobby the only gets mentioned in passing. She's shown playing ping-pong in an issue of her Batgirl run and as a member of her high school gymnastics team in some special somewhere.

Aaaand at least once in the 90s she was shown hanging out at the mall. Which I file in a similar vein as the two or three times recently writers have sent her and Cass (plus or minus a random assortment of Babs, Tim, Bernard, Harper, etc.) to "the club" for some nondescript dancing -- less of a hobby that says anything about Steph herself and more of a Generic Thing that Cool Kids These Days Do, so Steph does it because She's Cool.

And... That's it. So far as I know. Like I've said in the past, they don't really put much focus on who Steph is and what she wants outside of the caped life, and after 30 years, a solo series and a series where she was functionally the deurotagonist, it's a little weird.

a really strange side effect of this post has been every once in a while i get an anon or something where someone is explaining the way they annotate to me in grave detail. and it's exactly the kind of thing i'm criticizing in this post. and then they end it with "but does that make sense? :)" i'm not sure what exactly the objective is with these asks but i have two hypotheses

you think you can sell me on the merits of braindead annotation by explaining why you think it's a good idea to underline entire pages of text and have 0 insights. this is not going to happen. i'm a literature graduate and i don't see the value in annotating a book unless it's specifically helping you further analysis. i'm not going to change my mind on this just because you wrote an explanation for why YOU do it and sent it to me. because i disagree with you about the fundamental purpose of annotation.

you think you can get my approval on your annotations if you make your case well enough. i get it's kind of pompous of me to assume random internet weirdos want my approval on what they do with their books, but the tone of these messages is very much attempting to be persuasive and it would also not be the first time someone i've never spoken to before personally contacts me to take issue with something i said that doesn't have to affect them at all. if this is what your objective is, you are wasting your fucking time AND mine. i'm not stopping you from doing dumb shit to your own books. you can do whatever you want. if you have a spine, a complete stranger's opinion on annotation should not affect you at all. like not even a little bit.

and like. i made this post because i think this booktok annotation style is stupid and a waste of time and an attempt to posture as intellectual without actually engaging with the text deeper than surface level. and i still think that.

when i see these (don't find and go after any of these people obviously):

i see no attempt to actually engage with the book. the focus is on aesthetics, on colours, on tabbing, on putting little doodles in the book. this is not annotation. this is "drawing in a book". and that's fine, if you want to do that. but it's not actually forcing you to engage with the text and think about it if all you're doing is taking out your pen or assortment of highlighters and underlining every few lines.

i'm not going to go as far as to say this is anti-intellectualism, because there are at least some people who do this is who understand this is an aesthetic pursuit, not an intellectual one (and again, this is fine, i love when things look pretty too). the thing is, it's a lot of people who don't think that way as well. i got these examples off of google but every time i've had the misfortune of getting onto booktok or bookstagram or book-youtube shorts, i've seen dozens if not hundreds of people doing this and unironically thinking they've done some great analysis of a book. i have literally run into someone who annotated like this in my actual literature classes in my actual university before (and yes, having a discussion with her was as headache inducing as you imagine). i was personally friends with someone like this. there are people who think this bland aesthetic bullshit and first-reaction slop is real annotation.

and what bothers me so much about it is they are genuinely missing out on the benefits that proper annotation brings to your reading experience and overall development of critical thinking skills. there are several books i read for fun (99% of the time i don't annotate when i read recreationally) that i later read for class and had to annotate. that first read-through alone completely changed the way i saw those books. there are a few books i read for multiple classes, multiple years apart. and i have multiple copies of them that are annotated at different points in time. and both times i had very different understandings of the book. i could read my high school copy of the handmaid's tale and and see where my juvenile understanding of social issues was leading to a juvenile reading of the book. by using this aesthetic-based style of annotation, you are robbing yourself of the benefits of annotation. you could actually form a deeper understanding of the text. you could ACTUALLY come out of that book understanding tiny, innocuous word choices. you could actually come out of it with a better understanding of literature, of the author, of the genre as a whole, of the craft of writing. but you're too busy writing "wow!" in the margins to do any of the thinking annotation is designed to help you do.

also some of you just want to be scrapbookers just start a scrapbook you don't need to do this in a novel

i'm not like. an annotation style elitist. but genuinely the way some of these booktokers annotate their videos confounds me.

you'll see someone with extremely detailed annotations with like 500 sticky tabs in the whole book and it makes you think wow there's so much going on here. and then the annotations are just OMG! and they've highlighted 90% of the book and they've underlined everything. everything they write are just various reactions like omg! cute! wow! i gasped! hot! etc.

it just screams "i want my book to look like a serious reader owns it" but they straight up just don't understand the purpose of annotating. i don't even understand the use case for this type of annotation because like... are you really not going to know it was a cute scene on a reread unless you highlight the entire 5 pages? is this something you need to draw attention to?

it's just like. wild. to see these books with every single free space covered in annotations. the way someone writing a thesis about that book would do. but then you look at the content of the annotations and it is confusingly just someone's immediate reactions to what they've read.

which is like. it's good. that's definitely a part of annotating. but annotation is a tool to understand and analyze a text. and this is not what is going on.

and what is MORE confounding is when people who annotate like this SELL THEIR ANNOTATED BOOKS???? FOR MONEY??? THAT PEOPLE BUY ON PURPOSE????

From Lewis: Another cookbook, but this time with tea party specific recipes. There's also a nice basket of fancy teas for Shiyuu to share

From Yuna: an empty journal and some stationery supplies. She figured Inno could use it for just basic journaling or creative writing or whatever he saw fit. Additionally, there are also some photos for him as well.

For 🦋Yuume:

From Yuna: Some random wildlife photos she took over the year that she figured Yuume would like, ranging from bugs to birds to bunnies.

From James: A surprisingly fashionable sweater. It's a long cardigan with butterfly patterns.

From Lewis: Another tea basket, but with a lot of floral teas in particular. Also there's a doodled postcard of the Heartslabyul gardens that says "Escape Pass: In case of emergency, text (XXX)-000-XXXX and get a free temporary escape when you need it!" And a doodle of Lewis using what is, presumably, his unique magic.

From Yuna: unsurprisingly, there's a collection of group polaroids for him as well. They all have various captions on them from when they were taken.

From Lewis: An old potionology textbook of his with some additions not found in the current textbook, a box of tea biscuits, and a note card. "Sorry this isn't a whole lot, I wasn't sure about sending you a whole tea basket like the others, but hey! This might come in handy the next few months and maybe even next year? Probably not your style, but I figured I'd give you something just to show you that you'll always have a place with the Sheep. Feel free to do with the patches what you will or repurpose the jacket however you want."

Overnight, as though it were some incredibly late and panicked last minute Christmas miracle, boxes of presents can be found in front of the rooms of some of the Shrimps, namely Shiyuu, Yuume, Chase, Inno, Wuzhi, and Sadiya.

Some of the gift boxes have some kind of indication as to the sender (such as a feather in place of a ribbon, a doodle of a hat, a letter a mile long full of needlessly complicated prose, a stamp of a sheep, or James's rather elegant and overly detailed signature), but four of the gift boxes just have a hastily scribbled "-Y" on them. With those boxes, there are also some scribbled notes that read

"Sorry for the late gifts! Meant to give these to you sooner, but we all got caught up in things and decided to help give them out together. Hope you enjoy the gifts!

[Chase was about to head out for an early morning run when he tripped over a few boxes.] “WAH—”

[He quickly perks up, kneeling next to the presents.] “Oooo, exciting!”

[Wuzhi was about to head to the training field, stretching outside her dorm. That’s when she noticed the gifts at her door.]

“Hm?”

Sparrow and Nicky Rarepair ideas -----

Adult Sparrow is stress crying after a fight with family member (could be any)

Anyways, long time ago (kid/teen) Sparrow said to Nicky that it was so cool how he could just portal into the oak-garcia household (because doors are silly obstacles his parents use to keep him and his bro away from fun weaponry) and Nicky has never forgotten that, often shows up at random on weekends to spook and/or hang out into adulthood

SO, Nicky portals into the kitchen and this time he's spooked that Mr. lovewolf is already in the kitchen, bunch of papers strewn about the room

He's usually in the home studio/office (drawing) or the livingroom (watching stuff/napping) or out in the garden….

This time though all the half-demon hears is sobbing, friend barely even looks his way--mumbling something about: "I'm sorry I'm like this, I don't want to be a-a crybaby about every little thing and ugh this is stupid. And I forget you were coming…"

Nicky wants to comfort him somehow. In my mind, Nicky is more a physical comfort type of person--less likely to whisper comforting words and more likely to sit down with Sparrow and have the lovewolf do a breathing exercise to the beat he's carefully tapping on the messy kitchen table (he's a drummer, guitarist, and probably plays other instruments also because he refuses to only pick one)

After Sparrow's calmed down and rubbing at his eyes with a cardigan sleeve, he laughs.

Nicky looks curious in response, not appalled/unnerved (sometimes Sparrow does laugh/giggle out of anxiety and it tends to get judging looks but not with Nicky…never)

So Sparrow tiredly smiles and explains that "Hehe, I finally scared the one and only badass Nicky Close-Foster and I didn't use a spider spell to do it"

Nicky elbows him softly, then does it a little bit harder when certain little horrific beings are mentioned. Sparrow laughs more and smiles real big this time and Nicky finds himself smiling back.

Maybe Sparrow shares what he was upset about or Nicky talks about his adventures in hell, faerun, or at a gig? Either way, they end up huddled together on the worn down couch with an assortment of wildly colored quilts and tea, maybe a scented candle or two and spend the rest of the time creating a playlist together and trading song recommendations

Nicky has many places to go and a certain few he thinks of as home. Being in the oak-garcia house chilling out with sparrow is for sure one of them. ----- Next idea is for younger years! ---- OTHER IDEA

Teen sparrow really likes wearing the wolf ear headbands and those keychain raccoon/other animal tails but its against dress code at the school so he keeps getting scolded for it!

On the other hand, Jodie and Morgan are pretty strict about when and where Nicky can have his horns/wings/tail out…school is 100% a no, Glenn is pretty lax…like they've gone to amusement parks both full demon appearance (assumed to be fancy costumes) but…when school is brought up, frustratingly also no even for troublemaker rockstar hell dads apparently...

The two kids are pretty bummed out about not being to be how they want to be…and (hear me out) start some sort of after school costume club so Nicky can have his cool demon stuff out and proud and Sparrow can be the lovewolf!

Also, I like the thought of them going to conventions and concerts together? Could be fun. They aren't dressed as any particular character in the doodle (vague costumes) Or sneaking out to mini adventure in the woods or on faerun (or hell), after a few incidents, they'll sometimes have adult supervision, mainly Glenn, Daryll, Henry, or Walter Erin may begrudgingly watch over them if they happen to cross paths too I feel like Jodie probably knows they are sneaking around most of the time? but only really says anything if they get are about to get into danger

Riza Hawkeye as a child/young teen but she's just this Annie Oakley ass prodigal sharp shooter little shit who cuts her hair off with kitchen scissors and runs absolutely buckwild in the woods on her father's estate terrorizing small animals (humanely hunting I'm just being dramatic)

Roy boy is just this awkward nerdy little cornball who wants to get along, but they also kinda have that dynamic from the Swan Princess when Derek and Odette were kids ya feel me? Just watch the childhood montage from that movie you'll understand- ☠️

They have like nothing in common at the time (so they assume) and yet they end up thick as thieves cause Riza hasn't had many friends that she can see outside of her education and had an extremely isolated upbringing, so this goofy sweet baby faced dork just got her like that, even if he sometimes drives her nuts a little bit.

Riza would get upset fairly often bc her neglected social and emotional upbringing would get to her (bc realistically,,,,we know that was the case), and Roy got extremely good at knowing when she's upset and would often be the one to listen to her air her thoughts out (callback to the phone call scene after her encounter with pride, this lends background to how he knows her so well and reads her stress levels like a book even over the phone)

Mundane headcanons:

Roy would transmute little clay/dirt doves and targets for Riza bc he was worried about her shooting glass bottles and other assorted not necessarily safe objects.

Roy is trans, I can't untrans him that's just who he is to me. Riza is a self declared tomboy who I hc as nonbinary/demigirl. They're also bi4bi it's canon Arakawa told me.

Riza didn't really know good birthdays, and when Roy realized this it broke his heart bc Chris always tried to remember stuff like that for him and she's not even his own biological mother. So, he made an annual routine of gifting her something (often transmuted and unique).

Riza loved being out in nature back then and knew the wooded areas around the estate like the back of her own hand, when she and Roy had warmed up more to one another she made a routine of showing him all the neat little spots she'd found in the area for one reason or another, just for the sake of sharing that with someone. These remain some of their fondest memories.

Riza would be more likely to go out to shoot targets when she was angry or upset, if she was having a good day and had the time she would be more likely to go hunting because she enjoyed the hiking and tracking but couldn't focus on it when internally upset. Roy eventually figured this out as well.

Riza climbed so many trees, rocks, outcroppings, etc- and was always scraped up from something she probably shouldn't have climbed getting the better of her.

Riza used to have a nanny birddog named Otto, but he passed away before Roy came around, so making a new friend in him after that loss was a big comfort to her. She was hesitant to have other dogs until Hayate.

They're both autistic.

Relatedly, Riza would go nonverbal and lock herself in her room sometimes. Roy, concerned, would approach this by slipping little notes under the door offering company if needed, while not pushing her to talk.

Riza would sing/hum while doing chores or out and about exploring and on every occasion Roy overheard this he'd turn red from ear to ear- if she caught it and realized he'd heard she'd be twice as embarrassed.

Riza would take Roy foraging and showed him some useful/edible plants, and safe berries and mushrooms that she knew in the region. He was honestly always pretty impressed, especially considering some mushrooms that are safe have toxic siblings that look identical.

Both of them are varying levels of nerd. Riza is the type who's full of trivia, especially weird facts about her special interests (animal behavior, guns, bushcraft, navigation and tracking stuff, etc), Roy started out neutral to this but over time infosharing kinda became their love language, and he'd start to infodump right back. They'd spend hours like that some days.

Riza knows constellations really well for navigational reasons, and there were times that she showed Roy a way to get onto the roof from the attic and they'd stargaze. She would teach folk names of constellations, regional lore behind them, navigational uses for them etc; Roy would tell her basic facts about space and astronomy that come with understanding of alchemy.

Riza typically stuck to small prey (rabbits, fowl, easy to retrieve misc.), but Roy had an awakening when Riza first killed a whole ass deer (albeit a young one) and came back with it thrown over both shoulders with the determined energy of a small lionness.

Riza is REALLY good at cooking and baking because she had a bit too much free time to fuck around in the kitchen. She also learned how to cure and smoke meats bc of her hunting. It certainly helped them stay well fed.

Roy developed a habit of cooking for the household pretty regularly in a swapped routine with Riza after only a while of being around because he saw how much she had to be self sufficient in almost every way and honestly just wanted to relieve her of the constant responsibility and self parentification. He'd also help with chores constantly.

Roy had major internal conflict even early on because he respected his teacher greatly for his intelligence and brilliance, but also kned that Riza wasn't being raised well, and that no matter what he does, Berthold can only decline mentally. This is the root of his protective and caretaking behavior with her, ultimately.

Roy doodled and sketched a lot back in the day and had a little booklet that he guarded with his life bc it started out random assorted things, but eventually devolved into a book full of cute little doodles of mostly Riza jammed into the last half of the book (She can never know-). He still has it stored away.

Riza could easily pick him up even then, this never changed. She got to show this once when he sprained his ankle on a hike with her and she held half his weight as a crutch with no strain to herself. He never quite recovered from that (but boy did it make his crush worse).

Roy would notice rarely he'd have a shirt go missing and never could figure out why til he'd find Riza wearing an identical shirt. (She told herself it's just cause they're cozy of course- she just likes boys clothes too! They look nice under overalls and are comfortable to sleep in! nothing more /s) They never said a word about it even though it was right in front of them, they couldn't dare.

Roy had a bike, and she'd ride behind him down some of the rural roads and paths that could support it for fun sometimes.

During winter the home would get pretty chilly because of its size and not enough stoves/fireplaces to fully warm the declining estate, so when snowed in on miserably cold winter days they'd usually end up reclined in the study by the space heater or in the loungeroom by the fireplace reading separately, but still occasionally talking back and forth.

Riza stopped hunting post-Ishval. She couldn't bring herself to derive that same innocent pride and appreciation for the circle of life she once had, and felt she no longer deserved to have that respectful exchange with the cycle of life and death after what her skills had been used for. She never stops going to shooting ranges, but it's either for standard upkeep of practice or to vent.

Her eyes glow when she uses her powers, it can be pretty scary

I did say this in the main post but she's very attached to her hat. Even in the game it says it has her name inscribed on it (I'm picturing it delicately embroidered in cursive somewhere inside)

When playing the game I think the highest damage I ever saw her do with her pan was, like, 3. Which I think is just for dumb sexist stuff and to make the player rely more on her PSI so this isn't really a serious thing, but I think she just doesn't bother trying to whack things effectively because she knows it's a waste of time when she has ridiculously powerful magic she could be using. Like a one-off comic where Ninten tells her to use her pan on a Mook or something while he takes care of Lloyd and she just flippantly bonks it for 1 damage

She writes exclusively in cursive, mostly seen in her letters to Ninten after Giygas's defeat

Of course they all stay friends afterwards :3

Pretty much every photo of her pre-Ninten looks exactly the same. Just scowling at the camera like |:( School picture day, all of her birthdays, everything

She doesn't like Teddy at all at first even though she chose him over Lloyd, which I don't think should be too surprising (her being all proper and judgemental and him being an obnoxiously loud and crude jerk :P). She starts to like him more after she opens up to Ninten and Teddy starts to go through his own character arc, and by the time they reach the cabin he makes her laugh and she likes listening to him sing

She definitely apologizes to Lloyd after they reunite, and they become close too. They've definitely got some stuff to connect with, like neither really having friends before Ninten, starting out with pretty bad outlooks on life, getting super flustered when Ninten smiles at them

Ninten always makes sandwiches and stuff when they're not able to buy food on their adventure, I think I mentioned that in my Ninten post. Ana eats them with her usual dismissiveness, though inwardly she's actually super impressed by them (Ninten knows how to make pretty great sandwiches out of simple ingredients, and Ana's diet in Snowman was pretty basic and unadventurous) She ends up loving them and associating them with all her good memories of her friends

My Giygas design has horns instead of the usual ears which you might've noticed if you've seen my drawings of him before, I actually did that with her in mind specifically. Just sort of a lazy way to make him sort of devil-y because, like, she's christian. Deepest character design of all time

A while back I was wondering if I was straying too far from what little is shown of her in the game (not that it'd stop me), then I replayed it and checked some of her other options and she's like Totally serious Like I'm absolutely sure this wasn't the intention with her character and you do have to choose the options that you shouldn't be choosing but I don't think my interpretation really contradicts her dialogue in the game or anything (these are paraphrased but) "You're Ninten, aren't you?" >No "This isn't the time for joking around."

"Ninten, I really like you… Do you like me?" >No "You're right. We need to focus on the mission." Painful XP

So I played the fan translation instead of Earthbound Beginnings (that's also why I used the original holiday town names in the post, do NOT expect me to be consistent with that XP), and I really love how she confesses in that version. When you say Yes, she just says "I'm so glad." it's so, like, reserved and sweet, like you can just picture her blushing and looking at the ground to hide her smile aaaaa)

Originally I thought it'd be kinda fun for her to be, like, creepy, like she's a quiet, clairvoyant, completely expressionless girl with icy blue eyes that just stares into your soul It wasn't that fun though and I got fixated on the grumpy idea pretty much immediately after the first time I tried drawing her, so here we are now :D

Sooo I wasn't planning on doing this post just yet and I don't have a good digital drawing of her yet, but

So my take on her is very different from how I think most people imagine her, I wanted to go in a different direction that made her more than just the girl one/ninten's girlfriend/nicher Paula and she's become one of my favorite characters to play around with ^^

So like the entirety of my interpretation of Ana stems from one thing

Very prominent eyebrows (Invasion From the Unknown actually mentions the same thing!!! the illustrations don't show it though and there's not really any other similarities between that version and mine), mouth usually spread in a frown, she's not a happy person Pink dress with a white collar and frill at the bottom, pink hat with a black band (or maybe cream with a red/pink band? i might play around with that idk), red shoes and white stockings She almost always wears her hat when she's out, having to leave it behind in Reindeer was very frustrating but she knew she'd get it back eventually at least (And yeah, she's fat. Her sprite doesn't look fat, I haven't seen other designs that make her fat, I didn't really take inspiration from her model because I hate it and it's not really fat either, I just wanted there to be a fat girl who's not, like, a mean-spirited joke, and since MOTHER's sprites are suuuper vague I decided to take advantage of it and design the characters however I wanted. thank god i'm on tumblr and not posting these to reddit or something, they'd crucify me)

Now her character!

You can contrast that with Ninten's 24/7 positivity

In general, I see the world of MOTHER 1 being very bleak and gloomy, with Ninten being the sole exception who helps bring light to the places and people whose souls are being crushed by the weight of everything Ana's sort of the final boss of repressed emotions and pessimism for Ninten to tackle (besides the actual final boss, who completely blows anyone else's emotional repression out of the water - I have a Giygas post in my drafts but I honestly have too much to say about him, I need to trim it down ><) It alllllll plays into the themes I wanna play with in my M1 interpretation :3

So Ana was a young girl living with her mother and father in Snowman's local chapel. Even before the Invasion she was pretty well-known for not being particularly upbeat. She was super reserved, pretty much never smiled, and preferred reading and praying to other people's company. She got some of it from her father, who was a priest and raised her to value proper behaviour and following God or whatever, but she's also just kinda like that. Her mother was much warmer, loving her daughter and never judging her for being less outgoing than the other kids, and Ana was always happiest curled up with her next to the fire, listening to a story.

Oh, and of course she's psychic, powerfully so. Bad news if you tick her off. Her family regards it as a miracle from God. She's a little clairvoyant, but not enough to know exactly what the future holds. Just short little confusing snippets and hints of what to do and expect.

One day, everything suddenly changed. The town was hit by an earthquake, everything was covered in darkness, the animals on the outskirts of town went berserk, and people went missing. The sounds and the shaking jolted Ana awake, and she ran down the hall hoping to be comforted by her mother. Opened the door, standing there with a candle, staring at the empty bed and a shattered window.

Ana buried her feelings and set out to try and find her mother (her father just stayed home and prayed, never leaving the chapel), but the monsters and creatures that had appeared were too strong for her alone, and she could only get as far as Reindeer before she had to turn back. But she heard a little voice in her head that told her to leave her hat behind, and she knew that whoever returned it to her would be the person she had to follow to rescue her mother. She waited impatiently back at her home, praying with her father, obsessively reading the news (similar disappearances all over the country, especially in Easter, interesting), and hoping that the hero, "Ninten," would show up soon.

Eventually, after FAR longer than she was happy with, he showed up and. Is this really the hero? This is just some bucktoothed kid and his geeky friend. She shoved down her frustrations along with everything else (at the very least she appreciated finally having her hat back) and told him that she needed to join him. He's happy to meet her of course because he's Ninten ("New friend!" "We are not friends.") And so the trio gets to set off on their journey!

In the completely wrong direction. Why are we stopping in Halloween.

For some reason, Ninten doesn't seem overly concerned about the fate of the world. He and his stupid friend just keep goofing off and hunting for these useless melodies. This isn't a scavenger hunt. The world is gonna be destroyed. She's furious, but she bottles it up. This is the person who's apparently fated to save Earth, so she has to stay with him, no matter how annoying he is or how much time he wastes.

So Ana spends the whole journey getting progressively more ticked off as they keep getting distracted by the hunt for the melodies. Ninten's shenanigans and his relentlessly positive attitude continue to get on her nerves, and she refuses to engage with them. This is a SERIOUS mission, and she's not gonna stoop to their foolish level, even if she has to stick with them.

So I'll be able to get more into the fight among the group when Teddy joins when I do his post, but short story is that Ana is against Lloyd staying. If they're actually gonna see this mission through to its end, someone strong like Teddy's gonna be far more useful, and they've wasted far too much time to let Lloyd slow them down. Her anger's really starting to boil over at this point. They've been together for ages, and they've barely gotten any closer to saving the world.

This all finally comes to a head on the Mountain (I love the Mountain, everything happens on the Mountain). Ninten's starting to lose his cool as the stress of their journey starts getting heavier and heavier, having to leave Lloyd was incredibly painful, and he's angry with her for not having their backs. She snaps that they aren't friends, they're just allies on the same mission, and they can't afford to waste time goofing off and making pals, and the fight gets more and more heated until everything Ana's been holding in finally bursts free.

She's terrified, and she's been terrified ever since her mother disappeared, and she doesn't know if they can really win or if she'll ever see her mother again, and having to just stay bottled up while they just wandered around seemingly not doing anything has been awful, and infuriating, and she can't stop herself from crying anymore.

Ninten quiets down and lets her have what she needs for a few minutes before he tries to comfort her. He didn't realize she was keeping all this inside, and he feels horrible that she was dealing with this the entire time. Once her tears die down, he rests his hand on her and assures her that they're gonna save her mother, and everyone else, too. He doesn't know how, and he's terrified sometimes too, but he also knows that for whatever reason, they need the melodies if they want to win. He apologizes for just ignoring all her feelings for the entire journey, and tells her that even though she's been so firm about not liking them, he doesn't want her to be alone. She can tell him anything, she doesn't need to keep everything to herself. That's what being friends is about, right?

So this is huge for both of them, and it's when Ana finally starts to warm up. She finally sees that it's good to be open and have friends, and that they'll be stronger for it if they're close. And, as they climb further up the Mountain and continue being friends, she starts to realize some muuuuch more uncomfortable feelings, too. Of course she pushes them down at first, but when they reach the cabin, they're alone together, and who knows if she'll have another chance to open up like this, she comes out and asks Ninten to dance.

I flip-flop a lot on whether Ninten actually feels mutually about her (you can choose yes or no when she asks if you like her back, I don't think Ninten's really ready to figure that stuff out for himself), but goddd I love this scene so much, for such a simple, clunky game, its tender moments hit so hard ;-;

So by the end of the story, Ana's reunited with her mother, she finally has friends that she loves and cares about, she's discovered new things about herself, and she's developed a new sense of hope and brightness for the future. A happy ending :)

So that's my version of Ana, I think she's very different from every other version I've seen of her so it's not like I'll ever see content for her that'll really speak to me unfortunately, but I love her and I love thinking about her dynamic with the other characters ^^

The claps from your dance instructor ring out in the mirrored studio, calling everyone to attention before they send you off for the day. Everyone stands around listening to whatever niceties they're talking about, asking the rhetorical questions of whether all of you want this, how everyone needs to work harder, etc. How many years has it been now, almost three? Evaluations went pretty well recently and you've certainly demonstrated signs of growth since you started, but debut? Who knows. Does anyone, really?

But right now it's late and you're hungry, hoping that your growling stomach isn't loud enough to pierce through the lecture. You're respectfully tuned out anyway, since it's all old news. Nothing you haven't heard before. They clap again once their spiel ends and everyone disperses. Your eyes catch Hyejin's on your way out of the studio, sharing a funny face and an eyeroll before disappearing into the herd of trainees shuffling to the lockers.

Your locker opens with a routine spin of the dial, taking care to slow down and line up the numbers properly so you're not stuck having to do it over again. The inside's pretty cute for a metallic rectangle— it's really the only space of your own besides your notebook. Pictures of your family, old school friends, and fellow trainee friends line the sides beneath a tiny string of battery-powered fairy lights. It's not much, but always a humbling reminder of why you're here.

Unzipping your bag, you take out a pair of slides and drop them on the floor while stepping out of your sneakers. There's not much else in your bag, just a change of clothes and your notebook, of course. Everyone has one. Anything inside could be drawn, written, scribbled, painted. It’s your personal creative space and no one else's, but with two conditions:

You can't write your name in it, not even your initials. Of course everyone tried to as kids against their parents commands, but letters simply sink into the page, disappearing as if they'd never been written at all.

You can only mark up one side. Pages on the right side are for you, and the left side pages fill themselves. Fill themselves with what? you asked your parents. They gave you a non-answer, saying you'd figure it out someday. Great. Only other thing they bothered to tell you was that your right-hand pages were someone's left-hand ones. So someone can see what I put here? Their confirmation sounded rather casual, which you found weird. Someone out there was watching what you put in? But you got used to it, especially since every person owns one. It's a novelty for children anyway. Mark up a page however you want, knowing that someone out in the would will see, and sit back to watch whatever randomness shows up on the left side.

Your left side pages were actually empty for quite a while, save for the occasional "UGGHHH" followed by a typical childish annoyance scrawled messily across the entirety of the page in marker. Not that notebook use was mandatory, but parents usually encouraged it because it kept their kids occupied. There wasn't much you could do about empty pages, nor did you care most of the time, but it did leave you a little jealous of other kids at school who'd sometimes open theirs and be greeted with cute watercolor paintings, mini murals, or skillfully written poetry.

For you, the notebook's served many uses. As a kid it was random doodles and poorly-drawn fantasy scenarios— escapism, perhaps. In middle school it was angsty poems and random journal entries about the random happenings of your life. For the first half of high school it became your to-do list, keeping track of school assignments. And on the rarest occasion, song lyrics. Visual art was never your medium of choice, music came more easily. But drawing staff lines for music notation in the notebook usually ended up being too tedious, so your original stuff was mostly relegated to voice memos on your phone. And now? Who knows. Trainee life may as well be a blur. Sing, dance, talk, eat if you can afford to, sleep, repeat. It's hard to find the energy to write anything most days. Whenever you feel like checking, the left side has random jottings, nearly illegible most of the time.

It wasn't until you got older that you realized that whoever read your entries on the was the same person generating content on the left. And supposedly the person you're supposed to be with for the rest of time? What kind of system is that? I'm just supposed to trust blindly? having asked your parents in exasperation after figuring it out. Again with more non-answers— it had worked for them, didn't it? There's also the obvious question of why people don't just write directly to each other, but whatever. You're still young, no need to obsess over "the one" unlike some of your classmates. If it's meant to be, it'll happen, you figure. And it obviously is, you've got a notebook with (semi-)filled left side pages. What more could you ask for?

The cacophony of clanging lockers opening and closing starts to die down as people leave. Hyejin's head pops out from behind the locker door, laughing in your face when you flinch.

"Ready to go?"

"Yeah, one sec. Man, I'm starving,” you remark while slipping the bag straps on your back and closing the locker door. You don't even want to know how strapped for cash you are, probably in for another night of boiled eggs and canned kimchi.

“Wanna go out for food?” she immediately asks, eyes alight at the prospect of getting to eat something besides convenience store food.

"I wish. Actually, you wish," you smirk with longing in your eyes. The "no" doesn't even have to be said, weigh-ins are way too soon to risk it. She hangs her head, jokingly dejected as you swing an arm around her shoulder to walk out of the company building together.

After scrounging up whatever food you call dinner, taking a shower, and flopping into bed, you open up your notebook and grab the random pen laying on your dresser, unsure of what you'll write about tonight. There's chicken scratch on the left page already, ballpoint pen. It's actually legible today, though: In my room every day I see your smile.

What the hell does that mean? Whose smile, yours? You haven't even met yet.

Call me everyday every night, hug me everywhere every time

Utter nonsense. Maybe meeting soulmates is just a huge game of catch-up once everything's finally revealed, surely yours will be. There’s just so many questions. Moving to the right side, you jot down a list of cheat meal ideas along with some assorted notes and pointers from practice that you want to work on tomorrow, drawing little characters next to each list item for fun. After accidentally drawing a random squiggle from jolting yourself awake and feeling the heaviness in your eyelids, you cap your pen and shut your notebook, placing it back in your bag. With the lights out, the last thought you have before sleep consumes you is why haven't you ever tried writing directly to each other after all this time?

2022 Art Summary

it is that time of the year again, folks. this year has felt like forever and so short simultaneously. it’s felt like nothing and everything was happening. it was a weird year for me, probably because for the most part it was rather monotonous. but there were some good things to look back on, and as per usual i’m here to round it up here for you all to look at and enjoy :3

i’ll be honest. i was really worried about the art summary this year at first because these first few months were so sparse. i even considered just condensing the whole thing into quarters since this one was so lacking. but as the year went on, the more things i had to share, so for sake of brevity i will be putting the first three months up all at once

included in this quarter are assorted Cosmic Legacy character sketches, a Genshin Impact sona to continue the trend i had wanted to set at the end of 2021 (which i did not continue afterward), a lil valentine’s day present to my girlfriend, and a shiny form for my sona that was just part of a inside bandwagon. not much to say otherwise :/

the one major thing that happened in the first few months of 2022 was that i FINALLY. GOT MY HANDS. ON A NINTENDO SWITCH. I CAN NO LONGER MEME ABOUT BEING SWITCHLESS

so that was pretty exciting :>

the release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus is what broke me, but before i played that i started off with a blind nuzlocke of Pokemon Shield, which is what the lil digital doodle in March is about; i had just caught a Stunky i named Wasabi and i was indifferent to Stunky up until catching him where i just fell in love with it

so, AI art, huh? this was when it was burgeoning, and still fun and popular to make. so when i saw some people using a 3d pokemon generator i made a whole bunch and gave it a go. i generated about 30 of them and hadn’t quite gotten to around a third of that, but the few i did were really fun to draw!

(the lil gremlin one at the top corner is uncolored here bc when i did try to color it my brain fully glitched and screwed up royally so i opted out of showing my failure here lol)

so my friend Cake started streaming a game called Your Turn to Die with me and our partner Stacey during the spring starting in late March, and it was such an incredible time that i miss being a part of (if you wanna watch our full playthrough, the vods are saved on her channel here)

so towards the end of our playthrough i decided to try my hand at drawing some stuff because my brain could not simply hold all of my feelings for them

i am definitely not biased because i played both Keiji and Rio Ranger in the stream, but i sure did like them a lot, and it was really fun to draw them :>

had a lot of cosmic drawings this month, most likely due to celebrating the One Year Anniversary of the concept at the beginning of the month! we celebrated with a cute little collab. i happened to continue the cosmic train on my end by coming up with a funny meme video idea (that we will get back to multiple times later on) and i also worked on a couple pieces in preparation for an upcoming event in the next month...

I FINALLY REMEMBERED TO SIGN UP AND PARTICIPATE IN ARTFIGHT FOR THE FIRST TIME

it was a really fun event but i did not anticipate how late i would start my entries and how much time it would take to do them well, so i only got a few out, but i’m really proud of them! it was awesome to see all these brain children of random people from all around, and to get a couple responses back of my own as well! i’m excited to give it another go next year :3

i did not get a whole lot of art things done this month because MY GIRLFRIEND (and her roommate) CAME FROM OVERSEAS TO VISIT!!

it was such a great time being with them, and we had so much going on i didn’t get much opportunity to do much, but that was fine. one thing, related to my partner actually, is my pokemon gym trainer sona here! Stacey had been thinking about a fakemon region and wanted her friends as gym leaders, so i offered myself as a ground-type trainer, since it’s one of my favorite types and is rather underrated

a little more work got done on the cosmic meme video, and a couple other lil doodles. not much else artwise, but an awesome month regardless :3

idk why this month was so lacking, cuz this is pretty much all i had lol

the one decent sketch of my sona being angy was inspired by a post i found on here that was like... if you were a villain in a movie, what song would be playing at the point you would snap

and the choice i made was Faint by Linkin Park cuz it seemed applicable. and then my brain decided to listen to it on repeat and i ended up drawing that sketch. so that was cool :0

as per usual i do at least attempt to do an october art challenge, and this time i wanted to try this year’s annual list from Thomas Sanders, and it was pretty fun! i was really into it the first week, but then i got behind and after that point many of the prompts didn’t hold my attention, so... i trailed off. again

but! i do really like these ones in particular. didn’t really have much else after that so i’m glad i had fun with those

again this is p much all i had - november was a pretty nice time actually, with lots of gaming stuff going on with me n friends, but not so much art stuff was going on then

after having completed playing pkmn shield back in june, i tried my hand at pkmn legends pretty much right after that... and it didn’t quite click with me, though i did really like it. and then over the next few months i got back into pkmn go and that’s when i realized That’s more like what legends is about - it just screwed me up coming from a regular pkmn game. so, this month, i picked it up again and i’ve gotten much farther and much more attached!

in addition, later in the month my friends and i got back into playing stardew valley after nearly a year’s hiatus, and we made our characters based on the main trio in Cosmic Legacy, and so i drew Lalun with a parsnip. it was funny

and speaking of cosmic and video game things, Sonic Frontiers came out and i... did not get that one (though i will one day cuz it looks rad) BUT one of my friends got super into it and got me hooked on one of the songs, and then the part of my brain that associates fandom stuff with songs (a rarely triggered part of my brain) started to tie that to [REDACTED] here, as inspiration for their character. maybe. idk but the song gave me vibes that they could definitely have and i thought it was cool and i made a cool art with it too so yay

and here we are, at the end of the year! the sonic hype train was still rolling so i thought about giving them another go and they turned out pretty good! and i pumped out some more pokemon content at the very end to inflate this month’s art stuff a lil bit more

all in all it’s been. a year, to say the least. i am definitely looking forward to new things in the new year, but this one had been pretty alright. lots of fun and memorable things that hopefully i can continue doing similarly in the future :3

Another Sigil Tutorial

Hello everyone! So I had a lot of questions about my other sigil posts and decided to post another method to making sigils. This is another one of my favorites to use! I just really like the way these turn out. I call this the constellation method!

Step 1: Get your Phrase

For this tutorial I'm using the phrase "Protect this place"

Step 2: Take Out Repeating Letters

So any repeating letters you have take them out! *Side note: this step doesn't matter too much because of the method which you will see in a minute but it helps confusion*

"Protect this place" becomes "protechisla"

Step 3: Making Dots

Remember this chart?

So grab this chart and just ignore your numbers. Take what is left of your phrase for us "protechisla" and make dots on all of the letters you see. It should come out looking something like this:

So now we've got our "stars" for our "constelation". Take out the chart and you should be left with an assortment of dots like this:

Step 4: Connecting the Dots

So we have this random assortment of dots and now you get to be creative and connect them however you see fit. Play around until you have something you like. This is what mine looked like after some playing around with different arrangements:

Step 5: Make it a "Constellation"

This is what mine looked like when I was finished.

This is a wonderful method for those who are still in the "broom closet" because they just look like super cute little doodles or constellations. It's a super easy method. Just remember DON'T OVERTHINK ANYTHING!!!!! Make this your own sigil. Follow the method but also do whatever feels right! And most important! Stay safe and have fun with it!!!!!
