This has probably been said before but the svsss fandom is just so fun.
First, the fics! Oh look another shen yuan disciple au? Oh but binghe is his shixiong? Read and kudosed! Oh another shen yuan disciple au? But shen jiu is his shidi??? Devoured! Oh another shen yuan peak lord au? With shen jiu AND binghe as his disciples? Oof guess I gotta clear my calendar. Demonic shen yuan? I better see some monster fucking! Shen jiu gets reborn again? Well- and on and on and on and on.
And the ships of course! Yeah I ship bingqiu! But also bingliushen, liushen, bingliu, bingjiu, qijiu, jiuyuan, zhushen, qijiushen, tianjiu, moshang, cumplane, mingling, and of course, bing(mei)bing(ge)qiu!
Usually in other fandoms there are only one or two pairings I feel the urge to gnaw on. In svsss though, it literally depends on the fucking day.

IT'S TIME TO LAUNCH THE BOOK
Tumblr media
WELCOME FRIENDS, TO THE BEGINNING OF AN ADVENTURE! Allow me to introduce to you, DELILAH JONES; free-lance Robin Hood and bad-ass extraordinaire.
In the cyberpunk future of The Redwood Files, Delilah Jones is half film-noire private detective, and half western-gunslinger, who rides into a lawless town and fights the bullies and the bastards that hurt innocent folks.
Tumblr media
This anthology contains SIX, count 'em SIX short stories and novellas detailing Delilah's Adventures.
Through a Dream, Lethally; When tech CEO Michael Lense decides to hijack the soft-RAM in his employees heads in order to make people do his bidding, things can get awful, FAST. Being forced, without your consent, to be an assassin or a thief or a sex worker, and more. But Lense also has the city under-thumb. Only Delilah's got the brute force to break Lense's control, and free the city from his cruel influence.
Happy Endings, Guaranteed; Delilah has a partner, and after a long day of nonsense, is looking forward to visiting them at work to unwind. Only to get to the club where her partner works, and discover that they've been KIDNAPPED! Delilah races around the city, squaring up with every underworld hard-ass she comes across following every lead to find her partner. Except nothing is what it seems, and a simple (but tragic) kidnapping turns out to be way more nefarious than Delilah expected. . .
Delilah's Heart; recovering from the last adventure weeks later, Delilah meets a handsome butch at a dive bar. Things between the two show promise, but the butch gets called back to work by an abusive bastard who violates and exploits his employees. The butch asks Delilah for help, and as she digs into it, discovers a deeply connected mafia bookmaker who uses that underground protection to kill and exploit people without fear of consequences. Delilah's the only one who can bring justice down on this bastard, but it threatens a gang war if she does. . .
Gutter Medicine; a gang of outta-town skinheads robs an impoverished clinic in a rough neighborhood. Delilah digs into the theft, and promises to recover the medicine, only to discover that the outta-towners are stirring up trouble to pave the way for an invasion from the South. A Kingpin from Los Angeles is hungry for expansion, and Redwood is fertile ground. Unless Delilah can stop the gang, and convince the Kingpin it'd be too expensive to expand beyond the safe borders of LA.
Restitution; Delilah's robbing a rich billionaire's museum-like mansion one night when she's caught by an unlikely sentry, a very old man who'd had plans of trying to embarrass the billionaire for reneging on a deal, and leaving the old man destitute. Delilah invites him to tell his story, and she volunteers to see justice done, according to Delilah's exacting standards.
In a Name?; every trans person's name comes from a personal place and an intimate choice. This story is about a young thief, with big dreams and a hard head, how she picked her name, and the day she was reborn into Delilah-fucking-Jones.
These stories have literally been years in the making. Some of them are personal, all of them are personal favorites, and this anthology is a collection I've worked very hard on.
Genre fiction is deeply important to me, and I love bringing queer characters to this space. Every story published in this book appeared first, both as ideas and in rough-and-final drafts on my patreon.
HERE'S HOW TO BUY AND SUPPORT THE QUEER NOVELIST IN QUESTION!
my ko-fi store: this is the most direct way to support me (a disabled queer novelist) and I get the biggest cut if you buy the e-book from this source
AMAZON! you want a paperback, YOU GOT A PAPERBACK

Bingge has been making a mess of the multiverse, looking for a SQQ who'll love him. Why? Excellent question, He's not interrogating his reasoning at all. Why should he? Doesn't he get everything he wants? Doesn't he deserve to have it all?
And yet every time he meets SQQ in any of these dimensions he's spurned, even the nice Shizun from that first universe turned him away... and usually they're much less nice about it. He was killing them for a while but it's been so long he's even bored of that now.
Eventually he finds a ...not quite dimension, more like a little pocket of existence. It's empty except for a bunch of strange machinery, no people. He explores it for a while before coming across a room? arena? of blue glass. He walks out into the middle of the space and the walls begin glowing. He braces himself for an attack- but none comes. Instead words being appearing on the walls.
Welcome Protagonist Luo Binghe! Thank you for providing in-person feedback to the System! Are you satisfied with your ending?
The strange being that speaks to him through the screens uses odd words but Bingge eventually figures out what it wants- and tells it what HE wants.
System has located a world that meets protagonist's requirements. If Luo Binghe is willing to terminated his current account he could restart in this other world.
It takes Bingge a minute to parse that. "Are you saying you can take me somewhere where SQQ will love me but I'd have to die?"
Luo Binghe must die in his current world in order to be reborn into the world meeting his requirements: 1) Scum Villain Shen Qingqiu loves him and 2) he is able to find happiness. System cannot guarantee happiness in any world. The protagonist must earn it for himself.
That's fine. He's not afraid of some hard work. "I'll do it."
Initializing...
~~~~~
There's a woman with long straight hair humming something soft and soothing. There's a man with a loud booming laugh and a red glowing mark on his forehead. There's bright lights that hurt his eyes and screaming. He smells fire and blood and there are hands pulling him every which-way...
The next time he clearly remembers it's dark and cold. Binghe starts awake and doesn't know where he is.
"Mama?' he asks, even though he knows somehow that's wrong. There's movement and quiet groans all around him. He's sandwiched between two other children he realizes. He's notably smaller than either of them. They're curled up in a nest of rags in an alley. That's why it's cold. That's Qi-ge behind him, his back to open space. He's still mostly asleep. And in front of him, up against the wall...
"Mama's gone Binghe." Da-ge says. He sounds grumpy, but he still tugs Binghe closer. (Qi-ge is older than Da-ge, but there's no doubt in his mind which is which.)
"Oh." Binghe says. Da-ge looks like the humming lady...Mama?
His throat hurts. He swallows and then lets out a breathy little sob. Oh...He's crying.
Da-ge's eyes snap open- they're wrong somehow, the wrong color- he pulls Binghe even closer.
"Don't cry didi. I'll take care of you." Da-ge says. He clumsily wipes at Binghe's cheeks. Behind them Qi-ge shifts, one big strong arm coming up to wrap around the both of them.
"We'll be alright, I promise." Da-ge tells him. "Now go back to sleep you silly baby."
Binghe wants to protest. He's not a baby and he's not silly! But he is very tired. So he rests his head on his brother's chest and shuts his eyes.
Upload complete! Congratulations! User designation: Shen Binghe, age 2, exiled Demon Prince. Prerequisite relationship met. User is Scum Villain Shen Qingqiu's beloved little brother. Do your best user, happiness is yours to achieve!
SVSSS AU
Shen Yuan as Shen Jiu
What if SY was like SQH and was reborn into PIDW as Shen Jiu but with a system. The system has no power since the protagonist has not been born, and so only uses its abilities for major relevant points like meeting Yue Qi and attaching himself(SY) to him(YQ). Shen Yuan, throughout all of this, has absolutely no idea what story he is in. He just knows he was reborn in a novel and has a system he needs to follow plot points for.
So, Shen Yuan/Shen Jiu would still be with his Qi-ge and even is really protective of him because he thinks of Yue Qi as this poor child who's is going through absolutely horrible things and yet still giving up his things for others. This caused him to be very prickly to anyone who wasn't Qi-ge because he didn't want anyone to take advantage of his kindness.
When it came time to join the Qiu household, Shen Yuan didn't want to. He had been a street kid for over a decade, and before that, he was an avid reader of novels.(which, considering he is in one, is very important info), so he realized fairly quickly that this was tragic character past level stuff and then Qi-ge asked Shen Jiu to escape with him.
Shen Yuan immediately had a suspicion that this story was going to end with one of them dead, and the other becoming either a hero or a villain for their childhood friend, and wanted to leave with his Qi-ge so that if they die they die together but the system didn't let him. It was the first time Shen Jiu had tried to actively go against the system, and the system punished him for it by making him feel like his legs were broken and threatening him worse if he didn't tell Yue Qi to leave ahead.
Then, it follows Canon, where Yue Qi promises to come back but doesn't return for years. (Shen Jiu is obviously heartbroken. His dearest person is most likely dead in a ditch somewhere, and Shen Jiu may never even find his remains)
Shen Jiu decides that even if he can't go against the system, he'll figure out a way to break its power over him. And so he studies and observes, he makes sure to learn all he can at the Qius and then even more with when he was forced to follow Wu Yanzi (even if what he learned there might have done more harm than good).
Eventually, Shen Jiu reunites with Yue Qi and is so filled with relief he wants to just collapse into his Qi-ge's arms and cry like a child. But like time and time again before the system didn't let him. This time, the system even forced him to constantly act like he hated Yue Qi. Shen Jiu tried to loophole the system by showing Yue Qi how much he paid attention to him with purposefully horrible gifts, food and tea he doesn't like, etc.
Life continues like this for a few more years, the now, Shen Qingqiu still trying hard to break the system control on him while also juggling the few interpersonal relationships he has. 'Hating' YQY, fighting Liu Qingge, avoiding Mu Qingfang the suspicion from the rest of his martial siblings, having to ignore most of his disciples. And then Luo Binghe showed up.
SQQ had figured out what novel he was in when he got his courtesy name and was expecting Luo Binghe to show up, what he wasn't expecting was for the system to power up when he did.
SQQ was forced by the system to throw tea on Binghe's face, but surprisingly that was all he was forced to do. Sure there were prompts and small optional missions that would have made SQQ come across LBH but there was never any force. SQQ was obviously suspicious of this but took full advantage of the fact that he could avoid LBH, after all it gives the benefit of Binghe not growing a grudge plus not allowing the system to be around it's batteries.What SQQ didn't know was that the LBH was still going through many of the things that originally happened to him, just from the other disciples.
When LBH was 14 Shen Jiu finally figured out a way to remove the system's control and while trying it, the system used a lot of its power and energy to take back control and managed to lock all of Shen Yuan's memories from after his Rebirth, leaving him to wake up just like he did in canon.
//-//
Things could go pretty canon-compliant after that except for maybe a few small things plus maybe a different ship to SY/LBH. And then after canon, something happens to regain those memories, or what if he never does and Shen JiuYuan's story ends in the tragedy of never knowing he was free from the system.
Or maybe at some point Shen Yuan discovers all of Shen Jiu's research on the system and puts the pieces together.
If anyone happens to be inspired and wants to write something about this au, please let me know i would love to see others takes on this.
I've had this AU in my head for a while but never wrote anything down before, the only reason I did this time was because I kept imagining this au to the song 'Mr.Author by Dina Rebekka' (100% recommend listening to it)
Here's the Shen Jiu addition to the PIDW x Avatar the Last Airbender AU ˚˖⋆.ೃ࿔.✧˚.💚⋆
Tumblr media
The Luo Binghe/ge version
So, Shen Jiu being reborn as an air nomad! Let him have his well deserved peace!! Oh look, it’s a loving community that doesn’t have any hierarchies or power issues to fuck him over, and air being the element of freedom?? Fuck yes.
ALTA lore dump and extreme self indulgence up head >>
Ideally, Shen Jiu would be reborn during Yangchen or Kyoshi’s time, coz I still need the air nomads to be, yknow, around.
The air nomads lowkey act like a sect that practices aesthetic cultivation ( they reminds me of the Lan Clan too).
A quote >>
“The Air Temples had an expression regarding outside visitors who were shocked and disappointed by the incredible volume of chores the monks and nuns had to busy themselves with to support a few hours per day of meditation and study. Weak eyelids. Enlightenment was a muscle, and the world was too heavy for most.”
They work hard and are always studying philosophy and spirituality to seek enlightenment. Since they don’t hire people to do things, they do everything in their community themselves and depend on each other. Who knows, it could be therapeutic, and it’s not like Shen Jiu’s afraid to work hard. I think he would enjoy reading up on stuff about this new world he's in and there's access to so much knowledge and information in the air temples. He’d like travelling around to all of them. And a sky bison!!! He gets to have a fluffy sky bison of his own!! When it’s bonding day, he obviously doesn’t think any sky bison would want to choose him. Ofc he would make a terrible companion. Even great beasts are motivated by self interest, and he’d simply be a poor choice-
Then, he sees one that’s nudging her head on his arm. She strayed away from the rest of the herd and the other kids and wandered over to the lone boy sitting by himself, who was too busy feeling sorry for his life to even notice her approaching him. He felt a tug on his soul and knew he had been picked and there was no changing that.
Shen Jiu named her Xiyue, which means joy. Shen Jiu with a sky bison Shen Jiu with a sky bison Shen Jiu with a sky bison-
The air temples are segregated by gender, the monks live in the northern and southern air temples, and the nuns live in the eastern and western temples. Ofc all of them are traveling to wherever and staying in other temples for certain periods of time tho. Shen Jiu was originally from the northern temple but got relocated pretty quickly to the western one with his guardian once his aversion/fear of men became pretty apparent. They don’t understand just why another person who’s not the avatar has memories of a past life but they’ll make sure one of their own is cared for regardless. So now he gets to be surrounded by people who are mostly not men, and not a single person is around to judge him for it. He does go back to visit his home temple, and stays there when he’s older because he's learnt that the air temples are practically the safest of places. Pre-Sozin at least lol. I’m leaning towards this being Yangchen's time. She’s an air avatar from the western air temple and she’s unique for an avatar in the sense that she also remembers her past life. Or ten thousand of them in Yangchen’s case.
She’ll sometimes have past avatars outright possess her and start talking or doing things as if they’re still alive. The people who know about Yangchen think it’s a gift, because she’s got the easiest access to her past lives. Lol. As if. Yangchen’s out here living through the trauma and grief of so many of her lives in the worst moments possible. The first time she went into the spirit realm, everything went to shit because one of her past lives had an intense fear of spirits and Yangchen started having an episode while the spirits were attacking her. She was with her sister, and ended up losing her on that trip :( And there was this other time, one of her past lives straight up tried to convince her to give up on humanity altogether during another episode. This was exactly what he said;
“They take with both hands, and they pay only with blame. They find your edges and then they dwell there. Work a hundred miracles? You’re worthless for not performing a hundred and one… Human beings choose their own misery, over and over again. Tell me why humanity deserves an Avatar”
I was thinking this scene could be a character development moment for Shen Jiu, if he tries to convince her why she shouldn't give up on humanity. This seems like the kind of thing Shen Jiu himself would believe wholeheartedly, but he already spent a whole life believing that, and it didn’t do him any favours. (Yes, Shen Jiu is part of team avatar, he's the first member actually) He and Yangchen have something to bond over lol. Miserable past lives and all that.
Also Yangchen was shrewd. She needed to engage in clandestine operations and spywork to even hope to achieve what she needed to. Guess which former Qing Jing peak lord could've helped nudge her in that direction?
Not to mention she also knows forbidden air bending techniques (the one that Zaheer used on the Earth Queen that sucked the air out of her lungs to kill her heh). She perfected it completely and made her own variations. It's not mentioned just how Yangchen learnt of these techniques, but I imagine here that Shen Jiu had access to many of the archives and libraries (even the forbidden ones) in the four temples bc of how much he frequents them (the airbenders just like him a lot). And Yangchen knew this and asked him in which archives she could find them too. Shen Jiu is not going to teach the avatar voidbending! As if he'd risk getting in trouble with the elders and have all his access denied bc of it! *Cue Yangchen pestering Shen Jiu about it like a spoiled younger sibling and convincing him to just tell her which scrolls to look for, or else she'll tell tell the elders that he's the one who's been practicing voidbending*
It's not like he was even against teaching voidbending, he literally took it upon himself to learn and any all forbidden techniques he could get his hands on. And it's the fucking Avatar. Who would miss out on a chance to teach the Avatar?? But getting banned from the archives, or even from one of the air temples is a real fear of his soshjigl
Honestly tho, he could totally be on Kyoshi's team too. You know Kyoshi, she'd love learning those forbidden techniques too. Heck, Shen Jiu might as well be Kyoshi's airbending master in this AU.
He would totally find Wan Shi Tong's library without even trying. Idk how long it would take for him to get kicked out tho heh.
Shen Jiu would be one of those people who can easily get into the spirit world through meditating (he had a boon from having learnt cultivation in a xianxia world, that's why it would be easy for him). But since the spirit world reflects your emotions like a dream realm, Shen Jiu is not having a good time there.
I think he'd be insanely good at metalbending if he was an earthbender further along the timeline instead. The first time we see Shen Jiu do any form of cultivation was literally him reshaping metal into a blade! Lowkey feel like drawing him in the Zaofu metalbending uniform too. He'd look good in those dfdggfdf
Remember when I said he's going to live a peaceful life? I lied. Guess what demonic tyrant's getting reborn as a waterbender? Yuh Luo Bingge's here too.
He picks up on bloodbending way too easily, and learns how to take away bending too, coz you can do that with bloodbending apparently! (Freakin Amon over here) And the moment he gets 'reacquainted' with Shen Jiu, Luo Bingge's gonna give him more shit to have nightmares over.
And he will take away Shen Jiu's bending too. And while I believe in Shen Jiu living a life of respite after going through the entirety of PIDW, it's even more fun to torture him again after he's got a brief taste of freedom.
“I never thought I’d say this, but… I think LUOYIN might be taking MIANSHANG’s crown. I was a die-hard Peach Fairy stan — still love her, don’t get me wrong — but the first time I saw LUOYIN perform live? It felt like getting hit by a truck full of glitter and danger. They’re not soft. They’re not safe. They’re magnetic. There’s something about the way Xiao-di grins mid-verse like he knows your secrets, or how Third Prince doesn’t even need to move much to command the whole stage. And Sun-ge? Don’t get me started. It’s like watching a star collapse and be reborn in front of you. I still respect MIANSHANG, but LUOYIN is... different. They make you feel like you’re in on something forbidden. Like the rules don’t apply when they’re onstage. I don't care what their concept is supposed to be — they’ve got the whole fandom wrapped around their fingers, and honestly? They might have me too.”
Macaque touches a piano key and my soul detaches. MK exists and suddenly I’m thirteen and blushing again. Wukong SMIRKS and I forget how to walk. Red Son stomps and the stage catches fire, and I still say ‘thank you.’ Nezha high-notes me into actual cardiac arrest.
They’re not idols. They’re an ancient curse disguised as a boy group. I watched one fancam and now my eyes glow red when the moon’s out. Macaque has the energy of someone who’s been in love and at war for centuries. MK is that boy next door who would also rob your heart and your house. Wukong performs like he knows you dream about him. Red Son is unhinged and violent in HD. Nezha? Baby girl, baby boy, baby problem. If MIANSHANG fans even BREATHE too loud in their direction again I will astral project into their mirrors at night.”
🐆 LUOYIN 落音 — 成员介绍 (Member Introductions)
🖤 Macaque
Role: 队长 (Leader) / 主唱 (Main Vocal) / Composer
Instrument: 🎹 Piano
Nickname(s): 暗哥 (Àn gē – “Dark Bro”), 影影 (Yǐngyǐng – “Little Shadow”)
Signature Move: The "Look-Over-Shoulder Death Glance™"
“每次影影在钢琴前低头唱的时候我直接炸裂 😭 那气场,那稳重感,他不愧是队长!” “Every time Yǐngyǐng bows over the piano and sings I straight-up explode 😭 That aura, that stability — no wonder he’s our leader!"
Macaque is the mysterious, velvet-voiced 队长 whose presence alone makes crowds go silent. Stoic on stage, warm backstage (maybe 👀), fans are obsessed with how his deep voice melts into every LUOYIN ballad. He's the kind to drop cryptic lyrics he won’t explain, and yes, he plays piano during acoustic stages in all black.
☀️ MK
Role: 主唱 (Main Vocal) / 副Rapper (Sub Rapper)
Instrument:  Drums
Nickname(s): 小猴子 (Xiǎo hóuzi – “Little Monkey”), 嘻嘻宝 (Xīxī bǎo – “Giggle Baby”)
Signature Move: Mid-performance wink + shoulder bounce combo
“小猴子真的太会了!明明唱得那么甜,结果rap起来又那么帅,这反差我吃死了 😭” “Xiǎo Hóuzi is too much!! His voice is so sweet, but when he starts rapping? Ugh, that contrast is killing me 😭”
MK is the group's bright energy — playful, cheeky, and dangerously good at balancing soft vocals with fun, snappy rap lines. His fans live for his chaotic stage energy and his adorable giggles in interviews. Drums? Oh yeah — he shreds a live beat drop.
🔥 Wukong
Role: 门面担当 (Visual) / 主舞 (Main Dancer) / 副唱 (Sub Vocal)
Instrument: 🎸 Electric Guitar (rare live stages only)
Nickname(s): 孙哥 (Sūn gē – “Bro Sun”), 大帅猴 (Dà shuài hóu – “Big Handsome Monkey”)
Signature Move: The smug lip bite followed by a neck roll (his fancams go viral)
“孙哥根本不是人,他是仙 😭 他那个眼神太撩了好吗!” “Sūn gē isn’t even human — he’s immortal 😭 That gaze? Way too flirty omg!”
Wukong is the LUOYIN bias wrecker — all confidence and heat on stage. Every fan cam is just five minutes of hair flips, smirks, and hip rolls. While he doesn't play guitar often, when he does? The whole crowd combusts.
🔥 Red Son
Role: 主舞 (Main Dancer) / 副唱 (Sub Vocal)
Instrument: 🔥 Percussion (hand drums / stage effects)
Nickname(s): 红红 (Hónghóng – “Little Red”), 火宝 (Huǒ bǎo – “Fire Baby”)
Signature Move: Hair toss + precise foot stomp that sets off stage pyros (literally)
“红红那个眼神太狠了我爱惨了 🥵 而且他舞台爆发力太绝了,跳得像在燃烧。” “Hónghóng’s eyes are so intense, I’m obsessed 🥵 And his stage energy? He dances like he’s burning alive.”
Red Son is the group’s flame — sharp, expressive, and utterly explosive on stage. He brings fire (literally — he triggers pyro cues), and fans know he’s the one who feels the performance like it’s life or death. He also “accidentally” breaks mic stands. Often.
✨ Nezha
Role: 老幺 (Youngest) / 主唱 (Main Vocal)
Instrument: 🎹 Synth / Keyboard
Nickname(s): 哪哪 (Nǎnǎ – “Little Zha”), 小三太子 (Xiǎo sāntàizǐ – “Lil Third Prince”)
Signature Move: The deadly duality of innocent smile + high note killshot™
“谁懂哪哪唱高音的时候我直接在地上打滚 😭 明明是老幺却这么A!” “Who else collapses every time Nǎnǎ hits a high note?? He's the youngest but he’s SO powerful!! 😭”
Nezha may be the baby of the group, but he’s nothing like the shy maknae types. He has attitude, stunning vocals, and that “don’t touch me” energy fans adore. On synth he adds that cold, ethereal tone to LUOYIN’s sound — haunting, like frost behind the melody.
📋 Liu Wenhao
(Manager / Producer / Shadow Operative?)
Signature Move: Wristwatch glance + ghostlike exit
Known for: Impeccable suits, suspiciously good crisis control, fans calling him “The Mayor”
“刘总根本不像工作人员好吗😭 他那种气场像是从犯罪片里走出来的。” “Boss Liu doesn’t even feel like staff 😭 His aura is straight out of a crime drama.”
“我不信他是人……你看他眼神根本不像会眨眼的。” “I don’t believe he’s human… look at his eyes, he doesn’t even blink.”
He’s always there — backstage, beside the camera, behind the sound booth. Never in the spotlight, yet somehow unforgettable. Fans can’t decide if he’s LUOYIN’s manager or their demon handler. Either way, they call him “市长 (The Mayor)” and pretend it’s just a joke.
Tumblr media
@cool_silence: “女团粉一直说绵尚‘顶流’,可我们LUOYIN凭什么火起来?实力和专业是最好的答案。”
“Girl group fans keep calling Mianshang ‘top tier’, but why is LUOYIN rising? Because skill and professionalism speak loudest.”
The amount of foreshadowing in erha is insane once you go back. Obviously there's all the tree comparisons, but as far as Mo Ran's background, there's two that really have struck me so far:
(I don't know yet if some of these spoilers are in volume 8 or beyond in unpublished books bc I'm not caught up on official releases, so proceed with caution)
In the early volumes during the peach blossom springs incidents, the "bedtime story" Mo Ran tells Xia Sini about the ox and the boy that takes care of it is a metaphor for the Mo family that raised him and the crimes Mo Nan committed and how Mo Ran was framed for them.
In book 6, the reflection on the first time Mo Ran ever saw an execution and how it shook him to his very core because it is, almost word for word, what he'd done. He'd killed the household that raised him and took the true heir's place. He didn't take his name or his personality because Sisheng Peak knew nothing of Mo Nan or what he was like, but he did take on his identity as Xue Zhengyong's nephew and burned down the Mo household. That is almost exactly the story of the woman executed at Tianyin Pavilion.
In book 6 when Mo Ran visits Chu Wanning late at night in tears because he wants to tell him everything, "everything" isn't just that he's been reborn and did horrible unspeakable things as Taxian-jun. It's so much more than that. His fear of his family turning their backs against him isn't because of another timeline. It's the past.
"Sorry, Xue Meng, I don't deserve the right to be your ge" (paraphrased)
Not at all about Taxian-jun.
In what world would the Xue family actually believe and care about the horrors that Mo Ran committed in another lifetime? "He's trying to do better now so I don't care because I've seen everything he's done for us" is one thing. But when faced with, "we're not even blood relatives and I murdered your precious nephew and took his place", how could he guess how they would feel? Of course it would be full of betrayal. I mean Xue Meng doesn't even know Xue Zhengyong isn't his biological father until around this moment of the reveal, and Mo Ran doesn't either, so he doesn't know how different the situation may seem to his uncle. So it's possible Xue Zhengyong wouldn't keep that grudge against Mo Ran because he's already known he's caring for a son who isn't related to him by blood. Yeah it's unfortunate he doesn't have anything to remember his dead brother by, but to Xue Zhengyong, I am CERTAIN that after getting to know Mo Ran for so many years, he's more than just a reminder to him. He's his own person with his own virtues and accomplishments and good deeds (and bad, unknown to him). He took him in because he was selfishly trying to hold onto his brother in spirit, but that's not how he treats Mo Ran by any means.
All this to say I think Mo Ran's fear of losing his adopted family is founded, but I also think that they could have overcome it if Hua Binan hadn't inflicted such havoc in Sisheng Peak coming for Mo Ran.
Even as I remember it (not caught up on official translations), Xue Zhengyong and Madam Wang defended him even knowing about these things and willingly gave their lives for their nephew all because they wouldn't hand him over to a mob.
This has gotten far from the point of the post (foreshadowing), but it's fascinating to see how deep the seemingly unimportant things are rooted in earlier books.
hello, i ended up stalking your blog for like a few hours, you have a fascinating mind and i am slowly acclimating to the terrifying bags of skin and fat that roll tenderly and peacefully through this fandom.
i was wondering if you could provide a list of some of your favorite svsss aus? thank you for your service, and god bless the skin beasts. there is no one on this world who is intolerable by both heaven and earth.
good morning and welcome!
i'm glad you've met the bingcreatures. they're beautiful, plump babies we love dearly. i hope they can bring joy to you, in time.
also, i'm going to not think about what my blog looks like from an outside perspective. please forgive, just. so much. or you're welcome? my interpretation of your opinion of me hinges entirely on how much thought you're willing to put into shizun's ankles and bingge's whole thing, which i won't ask about.
i didn't have a lot of time to compile a list even approaching comprehensive, but! i did my best to think! i'm in the middle of my christmas-themed lying down and thinking time, which is taking a lot of energy. hyperlinks included, because i'm so great at technology, you're so impressed.
from tumblr users:
the master post to system possession au by artsarasp
first post to the asshole roommate binghe au by allpiesofourown
first post to a wonderful dragons au by sinn-bee (nsfw sketches)
the scum disciple’s self saving system au comic by kimbapchan (link to the comic on ao3)
part 1-2 to bingyuan reverse transmigration au by piooojo, which i've been in love with since i first saw it last year and i really really love a lot
AU fics on ao3 i quickly grabbed from my bookmarks:
(with my bookmarker's notes because they're my favourite passages ever)
bingqiu ballet au, “songs of a wayfarer” by foxflowering
Shen Yuan, Binghe wrote, a secret in the margins of some dilapidated English workbook, is very beautiful. He’s so beautiful, I don’t know what to do with myself.
bing-ge stuck in bingqiu’s reality replacing bingmei for a bit au, feat. exasperated shizun, “benign deviations” by benwisehart
“I would never leave you alone here with the likes of me.” “So you admit, then, that you’re a menace,” Shen Qingqiu said in an exasperated tone. “That was never in doubt,” Luo Binghe said, stretching.
binghe passing the time until shen yuan is reborn, feat. sigmund freud, “but until then, tragedy” by tshirt
"He was-- he is everything to me." "Including..." Dr. Freud paused a moment. "Mother?"
(could be considered canon divergence, but that's a kind of au, and i do what i want)
tianlang-jun lives just long enough for binghe to see him die and swear vengeance on yue qingyuan for it au, “forgiveness is beyond our reach” by anonymous user
“Although his attitude might be harsh sometimes, he’s ultimately a good child,” said Yue Qingyuan’s voice softly. “Is he, now,” said Shen Qingqiu’s voice coldly.
bingge comes sniffing around shen qingqiu’s peak while bunhe is yet to be abyss’d, “through the eye of a needle” by funeralstrut
Luo Binghe, what do you want from me?
(my forever favourite. im so normal about it i promise i swear i make normal human noises whenever i think about it and don't just whine pathetically towards the sky)
and of course this list ends with my shizun becomes the human emperor of the demon realm au, which i put so much time and effort into and have posted just, sooooooo much about. it should be your favourite. please. im desperate
i hope you find something to your tastes here!! i'm terrible at compiling things, but i did try my best. maybe. it's the end of the year; all my energy was left in august, when the sky had light and everything was less suck-y. at least we still have shizun...
My thought on the Rise of Ning, Pt 3
I finished 24 episodes of The Rise of Ning, and I wanna add in my two cents about the storyline so far, which, considering that I wake up everyday at 6 am to catch up on, is pretty damn good XD:
I was very pleased they adapted a scene of Lu Jiaxue observing Yining’s calligraphy and noticing that it bears a heavy similarity to Luo Shenyuan’s. This is an often emphasized point in the novel, given how prized a skill calligraphy was for scholars/officials back then, the fact that Yining can replicate his style is indicative of how very close they are. Now whether that’s a sibling thing or not, is anyone’s guess ;) hehehe
At this point, many of the drama plot lines are very different from those in the novel. But the one thing that the drama preserves in full glory, despite all the plotline modifications, is the sheer depth of Luo Shenyuan’s yearning for Luo Yining! And it’s just so!!! The way she is his most important consideration, the detail with which he prepares everything for her in the event of his death, and the extreme passion he is clearly repressing every moment sitting next to her… I’m so very satisfied, I’m giving five stars just for this alone.
Another thing this drama does excellently is to more subtly portray Yining’s extreme levels of attachment to him: the way in all her visuals of the future, he is eternally just accompanying her, reading to her, living with her (girl has truly never accounted for a possible future husband and sister-in-law in all these dreams lolol), her headlong jump into the river to avoid implicating him, even though she has to have heavy trauma of falling off high places… Also her keenness in noticing all the girls who are trying to marry him, while he couldn’t care less. (Also I daresay her determination to matchmake for him is also her oblivious way of staking a claim on her San-ge)
Also, shame they made Lu Jiaxue and Zhao Mingzhu adoptive sibling, putting them on the same generational level. This is because there is a point in the novel where our hot pining Marquis Lu becomes Yining’s godfather without having a clear idea of who she is, and the way he manipulates that seniority is truly a delicious read.
Notably the drama ALSO preserves the forceful and unpleasant aspects of his obsession with regaining Yining; in the novel, he truly cannot conceive that she has a whole life and family she will protect above him. Also in the novel, Yining is reborn in the Luo family after twenty years as a wandering spirit, so by that time, she mostly moves on from her romantic attachments to him, though she does blame him for her death. The blaming for death section is there in the drama, but here I feel that Yining's primary feeling towards him is raw fear, which also biases me firmly against Lu Jiaxue rn.
 Now I’ll begin my usual rambling commentary on plot changes lol. They’ve quite significantly changed Daoyan’s character here, enough that he’s basically a whole new person. While this makes sense with the drama plotline of reopening the Chen Jiuheng case, that’s not a plotline found in the novel. Novel! Daoyan is an eccentric monk who is also a military genius. My first read of him in the novel was that he was very ruthless, but tbh it’s more of that he is unaffected by emotions and is exceedingly practical, and in this he contrasts both Lu Jiaxue and Luo Shenyuan, who have an obsession with Luo Yining in common. So that’s a dynamic we are probably not going to see, oh well.
With regards to the side plot of Luo Yixiu and Lin Mao… I somehow don’t really care for it? Sure, with regards to my personal life, I believe in marrying a person you sincerely like, but in a feudal context like in this drama… it honestly feels a bit out of place. The princess’ son is genuinely a pretty good choice for her, given that he cares for her, has an odd personality that is not likely to take concubines later and has a pretty reasonable mother! Also I just instinctively dislike Lin Mao for always lecturing her about her weight and giving her weird weight loss medicine! Even if she says she likes Lin Mao, it comes off more as a childish infatuation than anything else.
Now that I’ve gotten started on this, novel! Lin Mao is actually shown to have a crush on Luo Yining, which no one except Shenyuan ever takes seriously. He does propose marriage, only to be turned down pretty firmly, and he goes off to a border region. Throughout the novel, he is portrayed as a playful individual who keeps wriggling in and out of sticky situations. He eventually does make his name by securing disaster relief for the border but throughout the novel AND the drama so far, he’s the kind of person I may want to have a short summer romance with, but never the kind of person I can depend on for a steady life. And that is kind of a very important criteria for marriage for a noble lady in those times!
Anyway moving on, regarding the plotline of Gu Minglan’s death, it is not a mystery in the novel: she forces herself to give birth to Yining prematurely, so that Yining’s parentage is not suspected. In a way, the novel portrays her as a very sensitive woman deeply conscious of the social taboos of her time, after Yining is conceived, giving birth to her is the only thing that keeps her tethered to life.
The drama alters Gu Minglan’s character to be more self-reliant and thus adds in an element of intrigue to her death. I feel this is primarily driven by the fact that they will only reveal that Yining isn’t the garbage Luo Second master’s blood daughter much later in the drama, but this reveal actually happens pretty early in the novel. And THEN all the courtyard intrigue takes place when Yining joins her blood related paternal family (I don’t wanna spoil this, but maybe you guys will guess who it is anyway). In the drama plot, the intrigue continues to happen in the Luo family, after all, as a main character, you NEED to have some family member scheming to kill/ruin/wrong you always.
Although Madam Chen’s character is more fleshed out here: her resentment is only human, considering that she loses her first son early and has to watch her husband harbor feelings for her sister-in-law, which is probably the highest level of social damnation for her, if it ever came out. Both in the novel and drama she is a person obsessed with maintaining ‘face’. In the novel, her first son is alive and well, and also her husband occupies a higher position than his brother. In the drama, she possesses neither of these comforts, and it’s not illogical that she plays a more vicious role. And the actress is also killing it; her expressions when no one is observing, do give off an ominous feeling.
Here is my subjective ranking of all the costume trailers iQIYI released (since I didn’t watch moderns or republican stuff they posted) note - not only is it subjective, it is just the trailers which often does not correlate with either quality of or my interest in the drama itself.
11 Go East - I am vvvv fond of Tan Jianci but this was the only trailer that bored me. It wasn’t bad, it just gave me NO hook of any kind. It’s a pity since this was one of the very few historical trailers (as opposed to wuxia, xianxia etc) and I love those. This said, trailers and dramas often don’t correlate so I hope the drama is good.
10 Reborn for Love - half this trailer is cutesy hijinks and I am just not wired for that. By the time the trailer was halfway over, I found myself thinking that if it wasn’t for leads, I’d not check it out. But the back half has blood and romance and I sat up and paid attention.
9 Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Red Moon Pact - I wanted to be more excited for this than I was. I love the cast. But even in comparison with the trailers for the other two entries in the series it looks…generic. I don’t truly get the vibe or the story. It’s nice but doesn’t grab me.
8 Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Sword and Beloved - it’s gorgeous and intense and screams fantasy romance and Cheng Yi fighting and bleeding. Pay your taxes, everyone!
7 Fox Spirit Matchmaker: Love in Pavillion - the visuals, the vibe, the angsty love feel, the colors! That trailer was my fave out of Fox ones. I need this drama now!
6 Strange Tales of Liao Zhai 2 - I haven’t seen s1 and mysteries (even supernatural ones) aren’t my thing. But the visuals in that trailer are insane and I spy with my little eye Yang Xuwen as one of two mains and the man owns my heart for Eternal Brotherhood and he brings his young Hu Ge vibes here too!
5 Win or Die - this baby is apparently only 18 eps and is all war war war but it’s a Cao Dun drama so the visuals are eye popping. It’s just stunning to look at tbh and sometimes (a lot of times), I want a grim war epic.
4 The Legend of Rosy Clouds - this trailer just grabbed me for some reason - it really makes you want to watch these people. It’s not visually amazing compared to the rest but it’s just dragging me in. In fact, while this isn’t my favorite trailer, out of all the dramas they promoed, this is the one I want to actually watch the most. I used to love the anime so maybe that’s why?
3 Snowy Night: Timeless Love - all the snow and the longing and the battles and we all know we will see red blood on that pristine white soon enough.
2 Love of the Divine Tree - it’s very very pretty and has so much shipping and angst and I have a huge 17 hangover so seeing Deng Wei with similar vibes is sending me. Honestly, my fantasy romance junkie is thirsting.
1 Fangs of Fortune - if someone told me a trailer for a drama full of actors I don’t care for would be my favorite, I’d not have believed it but here we are. This is fantasy and visuals and hooking you done right. I need this NOW!
ETA; I forgot follow your heart OMG! That’s my most fave except for Fangs of Fortune!
ETA2: and A Moment But Forever - I would rank it just behind snowy love.
