Disabilities and Monsters in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy

Through a discussion with @vixensdungeon (great blog to follow for TTRPG stuff by the way) it came to our attention that some of our more jokey and memey posts and reblogs may have given some people a slightly skewed idea of what Eureka, and particularly the “urban fantasy” parts of Eureka are really about, and its tone. We like to joke around about it, and the “cute monster girl” angle really sells on tumblr.com, but actually playing these types of characters in Eureka is not exactly a power fantasy. They eat people, and often eat them alive. If you find that cute, funny, and/or sexy, well, Eureka is still probably just the game you’re looking for, but that isn’t the main thing. Eureka uses the fact that many of these characters necessarily subsist off the flesh and/or blood of other people as a loose metaphor for mental and physical disability.

Imagine you need something that everyone else has but you don’t. If you don’t have it regularly, you will literally start to waste away. The only way to obtain this thing is to take it from another human being, who also needs it, and others will deny that you need it, and abhor that you need it. It’s not uncommon for people, even “progressive” people, to say something along the lines of “they need to all be killed for the good of society,” even if they don’t realize that’s what they’re saying. You didn’t choose to be this way. This is the reality of monsters in Eureka, and many people in real life.

And then even when you have that thing you need, for now, there are many facets of society that you just can’t participate in because your condition makes them impossible for you, like if a vampire wanted to take a run on a sunny beach. Monsters in Eureka will be challenged by their supernatural weaknesses at every turn, while hiding their abhorrent needs from society and even the rest of the party, and asking why they have to be this way. Finding clever ways to get around and circumvent their weaknesses is a core part of the gameplay of monster PCs in Eureka. Imagine you and your friends want or need to go somewhere, but that somewhere is on the other side of a river. The river has a well maintained bridge. For everyone else but you, a vampire who can’t cross running water, getting across the river is the simplest task in the world, so much so that no one would even consider it a task, but for you, it’s a challenge, and for gameplay, it’s a puzzle.

It isn’t totally hopeless, as many of the jokes and fan comics show (those aren’t just memes, they’re only showing one side of the coin and not the other). Monsters who accept, or even embrace and celebrate their monsterhood, can and do exist canonically, alongside monsters who can’t bear to do what they do. In some cases, these may be the same monster on different days.

I’m going to conclude this post by posting two excerpts from the rules text itself.

Disabilities are Disabling

So why don’t disabilities grant any advantage? It isn’t too uncommon for RPGs to have some sort of “flaw” system, where during character creation you can give your character “flaws” or some kind of penalty, and usually get that balanced out by being able to add extra bonuses elsewhere. Sometimes, these “flaws” may take the form of disabilities.

One particular high-profile indie TTRPG takes this beyond just character creation, and makes it so that if a PC receives a “scar” in combat that reduces their physical stats, their mental stats automatically go up by an equivalent amount, and proudly imply that to make any mechanic which results in permanent consequences or makes disabilities disabling is ableist. We think you can probably tell what we think of that from this sentence alone, and we don’t need to elaborate too much. 

We do think, in the abstract, “flaw” systems in character creation are not a bad idea. They allow for more varied options during character creation, while preserving game balance between the PCs.

But in real life, people aren’t balanced. The events that left me injured and disabled didn’t make me smarter or better in any way - if anything, they probably made me dumber, considering the severity of the concussion! Some things happened to me, and now I’m worse. There’s no upside, I just have to keep going, trying harder with a less efficient body, and relying more on others in situations where I am no longer capable of perfect self-sufficiency.

A disabled person is, by definition, less able to perform important daily tasks than the average person. To deny this is to deny that they need help, and to deny that they need help is to enable a refusal to help. This is the perspective from which Eureka’s Grievous Wounds mechanic was written.

When a character is reduced to 1 HP (which by design can result from a single hit from many weapons) they may become incapacitated or they may take a Grievous Wound, which is a permanent injury with no stat benefits. Grievous Wounds don’t have to result from combat, they can also be given to a character during character creation, but not as a trade-off for an extra bonus.

“But then doesn’t my character just have worse stats than the rest of the party?” Yes, haven’t you been reading this? There is no benefit, except for the opportunity to play a disabled character in an TTRPG. This character will probably have to be more reliant on the rest of the party to get by in various situations. Is that a bad thing?

Monsters Essay

All investigators in Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy are regular people. They can also be a monster, like a blood-sucking vampire or a broom-riding witch. Importantly, this works because despite their unique nature, monsters are still regular people. You can read more about this in Chapter 8, but the setting of Eureka does not have a conspiracy or “masquerade” hiding supernatural people from normal society. Though they are still largely unknown to modern science, they exist within normal society - and a lot of them eat people.

The default assumption in RPGs has been that monsters are just evil by nature, doing evil for evil’s sake. RPGs that seek to subvert this expectation often instead make monsters misunderstood and wrongfully persecuted, but harmless. Eureka takes a wholly different approach.

There are five playable types of monsters in the rulebook right now, and it’ll be seven if we hit all the stretch goals, but for simplicity’s sake this discussion of themes will just focus on the vampire. Despite them applying in different ways, the same overall themes apply to nearly every monster, so if you get the themes for the vampire, you’ll get the gist of what Eureka is doing with its playable monsters in general.

Mundane investigators have to keep themselves going by eating food and sleeping (see p.XX “Composure” for more information). Well, vampires can’t operate the same way. They don’t sleep, and normal food might be tasty for them as long as it isn’t too heavily seasoned, but it doesn’t do anything for them nutritionally. Their main way to keep themselves functioning is fresh living human blood, straight from the source. To do what mundane PCs do normally by just eating and sleeping, vampires have to take from another, whether either of them are happy with this arrangement or not. They do not, of course, literally have to, and a player is not forced to make their vampire PC drink blood, just like you reading this in real life don’t literally have to eat food. You do eat food if you want to live in any degree of comfort or happiness, and vampires do drink blood or they eventually become unable to effectively do anything.

This is numerically, mechanically incentivized and not simply a rule that says something like “this character is a vampire and therefore they must drink blood once every session,” to demonstrate that the circumstances a person faces drive their behavior. In America, there is a tendency to think of criminality and harm done to others as resulting from intrinsic evil, but people do not just wake up one day and decide “I think I’ll go down the criminal life path.” Their circumstances have barred them from the opportunities that would have given them other options. 

People need food; food costs money; money requires work; work requires getting hired; but getting hired requires a nearby job opening, an education, an impressive resume, nice clothes, charisma, consistent transportation, and so on. For people without other options, crime becomes the only method left to meet their basic needs. Would you rather take what you need from other people, or go without what you need? There are people who don’t have the luxury of a third option. Failure to meet the needs of even a small number of people in a society has high potential to harm the entire society, not just those individuals whose needs are unmet.

As their basic need for blood becomes more and more difficult to ignore, a vampire is going to encounter much the same dilemma. There is really no “legal” or “harmless” way for them to get their needs met, even if they do have resources. Society just isn’t set up for that. And no, your kink is not the solution to this, trying to suggest every vampire just find willing participants who are turned on by vampires or being bitten is suggesting sex work. It’s one step removed from telling a girl she should just get an OnlyFans the minute she turns 18, or that women should just marry a rich man and be a housewife that gets their needs taken care of in exchange for sex and housekeeping. Being forced into such a dynamic isn’t ethical or harmless for the vampire or for their “clients.”

“Oh well, then the vampire should just eat bad people!” You mean those same bad people we just described above? Who gets to decide which people are “bad people?” Who gets to decide that the punishment is assault or death?

Playable monsters in Eureka are dangerous, harmful people. They were set up to be.

Society not being set up in a way that allows monsters to make ethical choices brings us to the next theme: monstrousness as disability, and monsters as “takers.”

Vampires have to take from others a valuable resource that everyone needs to live, and the extraction of which is excruciatingly painful and debilitating. No one knows what happens to blood after a vampire drinks it, it’s just gone. Vampires are open wounds through which blood pours out of the universe.

This is a special need, something they have to take but cannot give back. Their special needs make them literally a drain on society and the people around them. In the modern world, there is a tendency to feel that people must justify their right to life, that they must pay for the privilege of existing in society. This leads people to consider “takers” (people who take much more than they give back, such as disabled people) as something that needs to be pruned away for the betterment of everyone else. Even many so-called “progressives,” while they claim not to agree with pruning “useless eaters,” still hold the unexamined belief that people must justify their existence. To reconcile these two incompatible ideas, they instead simply deny that disabled people take more resources than most people, and are capable of giving back less. This sentiment is perfectly illustrated by the aforementioned game’s insistence that disabilities are never a net reduction of a character’s stats.

Vampires and other playable monsters are inarguably “takers,” but in positioning them as protagonists right alongside mundane protagonists, Eureka puts you in their shoes, and forces you to acknowledge their inner lives and reckon with their circumstances. You have to acknowledge two things: first, that they are dangerous, that they are harmful, that they take more than they give - and second, that they are people. Because they are people, Eureka asserts that they have inherent value, a right to exist, and a right to do what they need to do to exist. (We also acknowledge that their potential victims have a right to do what they need to do to exist and defend themselves, but that is a separate discussion.)

One final point to touch on is mental illness. Mental illness is a disability, one pretty comparable to physical disability in a lot of ways, so all of the above points can apply to this metaphor as well, but there are a few unique comparisons to make here.

It’s not the most efficient, but there are a couple of loopholes deliberately left in the rules that allow vampires to sometimes sporadically restore Composure (and thus their ability to function) without drinking blood. Eureka! moments and Comfort checks from fellow investigators can restore Composure.

When writing the rules, we came to a dilemma where we weren’t sure if it was thematically appropriate for monsters to be able to regain Composure in these ways (since it could lessen their reliance on causing harm), but ultimately we decided that yes, they can.

People with mental illnesses may have the potential to be harmful and dangerous, but all the information we have access to has shown that mentally ill people with robust support structures and control over their own lives are much less likely to enact harm, whether through physical violence, relational violence, or violence against the self. This is why we kept that rule in for playable monsters. Being able to accomplish their goals, and having friends who are there for them, makes that person less likely to cause unnecessary harm.

Vampires are especially great for demonstrating this because they’re immortal and they always come back when “killed.” They can’t be exterminated, they aren’t going away, there will always be problem people in society, no matter how utopian or “progressive.” Vampires are a never-ending curse, who will always be a problem whether they like it or not. The question is how you will grapple with their inevitable presence in society and how you will treat them, not how you will get rid of them.

Eureka is as much a study of the characters themselves as it is the mystery being solved by the characters. It is a game about harsh realities, but it is ultimately compassionate. It argues through its own gameplay that yes, people do have circumstances which drive their behavior, people do have special needs that are beyond their ability to reciprocate, many of those people do cause harm or inconvenience to others, and all of them are still valuable.

accountability update/Best Practice Preview

Making the charts and graphs to finally make it clear how ridiculous we all are is taking a bit more time than expected because there is a subset of users that both does and doesn't have pink flashing, and since all insights happen at the margins, I have to dig into this a bit more. Release now expected the first weekend in February.

But: as proof I'm moving along, here's a title card, and the simplest main takeaway from the survey:

IF YOU HAVE "uint LotSkirtIncrease" in your userstartup.cheat, you can safely delete it to help reduce pink flashing.

Explanation: "uint LotSkirtIncrease 36" is equivalent to the in-game "Lot View Distance Extra Large" setting. It was previously thought that it was needed to turn this up to 120 in order to see neighborhood horizons in lot view but is not true (or not true anymore). If your horizon is blinking in or out when your game camera moves, it is not from view distance, it is from graphical glitching - same as if you've ever noticed the reflections momentarily not lining up in Voeille's water when you change the angle.

Having a LotSkirtIncrease over 50 SUBSTANTIALLY burdens the game at a critical stress point: loading any lot. It also overrides your in-game setting so if you were under the impression your setting was Small, Medium, or Large (and some of you were), it was actually Extra-Extra-Extra-Large unless you manually changed it after entering the lot.

Corollary: THE BEST PRACTICE FOR LOT LOADING, i.e., the Lot View Settings Juggling Method (LVSJM)

If you are prone to pink flashing, you should always exit lots (including when you exit the game) with Lot View Distance set to "Small" and Neighbors turned "Off." You may want to save with the game camera zoomed in as far as possible.

When you load a lot and have ascertained it is stable (you can pan the camera without any hiccups/lag/crashing), after 30 seconds, you can turn neighbors back on. 30 seconds later, you can start incrementally turning up the Lot View Distance.

Credit for this tip goes to the users who gave a hot tip on the survey that they only turn Neighbors on for screenshots (they will be named in the final report). We are often prone to thinking of those settings as something static, that we set and forget, but if we treat them as dynamic we can definitely manipulate them to our advantage.

Remember, after playing the lot - OR WHEN YOUR SIMS TRAVEL FROM THE LOT - you should turn the Lot View settings back down and manually save BEFORE the game closes the lot.

IF YOU STILL HAVE PINK FLASHING ON FIRST LOT LOAD/HOOD EXIT, there is further help for you coming in the report, but I don't have time to write it all up now. It's not not complicated but I went from total pink every hood load to virtually none (though I am not immune to crashing) using a combination of all the best practices I will be recommending in the report, and other users saw improvement to overall play session quality and length as well.

Lunari Heritage in Zaun

This is gonna be a reach, but from the little we've seen of Vi and Jinx's mom and younger Silco, I'd guess they were both from the same ethnic group.

In a place like Zaun, where the people are left with scraps, any piece of jewelry sticks out. Vi's mom and Silco are both wearing similar pieces of jewelry. Silco's bracelet could likely be fitted as a necklace since it twice wraps over his wrist. Neither are wearing anything of high quality, but the necklace and bracelet in their respective pictures seem decently maintained if not worn. That's when I thought, these are probably heirlooms.

In fact they looked pretty similar too, but in smaller scale of the princess's own pendants. I wouldn't bring this up if it weren't for the fact that Piltovans prioritize elaborate art-deco aesthetics, the more elaborately geometric the better (Councilor Shoola). So you would assume even the simplest jewelry would be a square pendant or a straight line. But no, big plain circles, and then I remembered we saw that before, on the princess Ambessa killed. Big bronze circles.

And when we look at young Vi , you notice that she's wearing jewelry too. A simple necklace with a green (it looks green) gem. And I realized that the princess's necklace was also adorned green gems.

I'm pulling from scraps, but it's interesting that small things these Zaunites have to adorn themselves (though not for long with the time skips) are similar versions if not simpler version's of the princess's.

At first I thought this meant that many of the cast were actually of Ionian descent. But then in the Princess's scene a thought kept coming back to me, "Why is Mel wearing purple?". Mel, a skilled diplomat from a young age, typically wears the main colors of the nations she hosts and is hosted by. White for Piltover, Black for Noxus (Ambessa), and always with her signature accents of gold. So if Mel followed her mother to Ionia ,where green is a culturally significant color, why purple? It's because Mel and Ambessa weren't in Ionia, they were in Targon fighting the Lunari.

The Lunari are Rakkor tribal people in the Targonian region who worship the moon, and are persecuted for it by the Solari, the religious order that worships the sun. While technically Mt. Targon is influenced by Mt. Olympus and Greek mythology aesthetic, that's more the case for the Solari. Overtime the Lunari aesthetic has been mixed it's originally nomadic culture with East Asian influences. The prominent colors of the Lunari happen to be turquoise, silver, black and purple. It was such a little thing to remember but it made me see connections I hadn't thought about.

Suddenly everything starts to connect. The bronze coins represent the 3 moons that exist in Arcane's Runeterra. How do we know there are 3 moons, because the Valdiani piece Jinx stole was depicting their planet. In the Valdiani there are 3 orbits circling the Earth, meaning 3 moons (or satelites). Now the engraving on the gold of the princess's necklace makes sense, because it's supposed to resemble the gates at the peak of Mt. Targon. The pendant itself is shaped like the mountain with the gates fitted at the top.

Frankly, it works for the Princess to have been Lunari and waves of descendants of the Lunari to arrive in Piltover and end up in Zaun. In Arcane, Piltover was created as a safe haven to escape the Rune Wars 200 years from the start of the show. Even after the Rune Wars ended the shipping port has likely seen waves of migrant labor and refugees from the ongoing crisis that occur in Runeterra (*cough*Noxus*cough*). It's likely that many of the current generation of Zaunites are of mixed heritage of the various fleeing people's.

It creates a whole new dynamic of the ways in which Piltover's laws, their Ethos, strips the people of Zaun from their identity and reducing them to tools for the mines. Magic is inherently a part of religious ceremonies and religion in general in Runeterra, especially for the Lunari. How do you practice your religion in a place that has banned the means by which it's conducted? There must have been more people like the Lunari who didn't have a problem with their magic, their problem was that they were being persecuted.

The remnants of family keepsakes brought over as communities fled were clung to as best as possible especially as they had to let go of part their spiritual identity. But even that doesn't seem to have lasted either. Vi doesn't keep her necklace, her mother is dead, so lost is her necklace, and we never see Silco wear his bracelet. They could have been stolen, or at best, hidden for safe keeping, maybe Enforcers get suspicious at the hint of mysticism and suddenly they want to talk.

Finally, maybe a little less related, it is interesting how prominent Piltovans and Zaunites take on day and night aspects. The sun shines over Piltover at their best, begins to set at times of uncertainty. While in the cover of night with moon above, the strongest Zaunites strike hardest. One more thing, it is interesting how Arcane's Jinx has taken on darker tones of purple rather than stick with neon pink. I always have to go back and look at a reference to remember that her pants are purple-er than I recall.

Update: I wanted to include that the large doodle Jinx made on her cup actually looks similar to the Lunari's sigil. And the sigil remains on the cup into the timeskip, also the center moon is made smaller within the crescent like in the necklace. I also noticed Jinx's cup later has more violent bomb imagery around it.

Update 2: With the final season approaching I'm noticing this is getting some attention again. I would like to say that if I could write this from scratch again I'd say it's more likely the princess is from Ionia now, which doesn't up end the Lunari theory.

Previous League canon confirms the Lunari faith does have ties to Ionia. A good portion of the Lunari are Ionian in descent, and Diana, their aspect of the moon (essentially their demigod), currently lives in Ionia. League even created skinline for Ionians blood moon worshippers, an edgy offshoot of the Lunari faith. It's all very interesting and a bit complicated because Riot loves to drop plot points in the lore and never come back. I'll try to clean something up for a longer explanation later. What's crazy is the Medardas are still the aggressors because Noxians and Solarians, which the Medardas are both, terrorize Ionians and Lunaris respectively.

I'm mostly asking because I've always really really wanted to see what those would look like when created as authentically as possible. It's always been one of those things that can't quite be replicated with the usual methods, no matter how much colour matching of paints you do. So every time I see you nail it when replicating that feel, my mind can't help but wander there

Working with unofficial designs comes with two complications. The first is the simplest to solve - getting that digital model into real space, which would cleanest be done with a resin printer. I've actually recieved some resin printed parts already in order to try to figure these out! They do need to be really good finishes and very well sanded tho. I know some folks are really comfortable with printing groove lines, but maybe I'm just really picky. I don't want my parts to stand out as replicas or fakes, while still being identifiable as them. Fortunately, again, that can be sorted and solved.

The second and harder one is based on the limitations of Silicone Molding and Resin Casting, my work. Official parts were made in molds, so mimicking the forms of the molds both results in specific consistencies of design and means they must always be able to fit in and be removed from that mold. Recreating that mold shape is how I get accuracy.

Printed parts may not be made with such design details in mind, resulting in awkward shapes and uneven angles. These would catch the mold shape and tear it with use, resulting in a significantly reduced mold lifespan. Some of these parts can be simply modified after print - cutting and sanding away internal pockets, for example. However angles on the front would need to result in an actual modification of the Masks design, for which I think would be better done before printing. I'll probably see about commissioning someone to make some of those.

Speaking of though... I still wanna double check the sources of some of the models I'm testing with, and make sure this is okay with the designers. I don't wanna mess up someone's work, and I'd rather comfortably get their okay

Hello, every birdy. Nice to see all of you. I can’t wait to share this recipe with you. 

Now onto the character and the recipe.

The Character - Yelan. 

Yelan is a character that I like the look of, but I don’t think I am every going to get her. She would be great with Yoiymiya or even Dehya but I just dont think that I would get her. When I first say her I thought she reminded me of Yor Forger from Spy x Family. Just the vibes she was giving off in the Chasm. 

The Recipe - Matcha Powder Cookies.

My sister has always loved green tea. One day we found matcha tea, and we knew that it would be on the shelf for a very long time if we didn’t grab it. And she was like “Robyn, can you make me some Matcha cookies?” 

As many of you know I don’t back down from a baking challenge. I do my research. I usually try and find a recipe that won’t break that bank. So I found this recipe, and it was the simplest recipe that I could find. And say that with all sincerity. When it comes to baking I love simple recipes that I don’t have to rewrite just to understand it. And yes I have done that before. 

About 30 minutes before you are about to bake place your butter/margerine and eggs on the counter so it can get to room temperature. Trust me, you want to do this step. I know that in the past I might have told you that this step is not that important. Oh but it is. If you don’t do this step you are going to have to mix a lot longer. And the consistency just isn’t there. 

The first thing that you are going to do is preheat your oven to 350 degrees. You can either line the baking sheet with parchment paper or you can spray it with non-stick spray. 

The ingredients that you will are:

1 Stick unsalted butter which is ½ cup (also if you don’t have butter, you can always use margarine. And I will give you a little hint, I only use margarine. And I haven’t heard any complaints yet.)

1 cup of sugar

1 teaspoon baking powder

⅛ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt 

2 room temperature eggs 

3 tbsp matcha (if I made this recipe again I probably would reduce the amount. Always look at the notes bakers have on their blogs. They are usually helpful. I read them afterwards and I am just look “OOOH that is why xyz failed.” So always read the notes.)

And then for the rolling of the cookies you are going to need 

¼ cup granulated sugar

½ cup powdered sugar 

And if you want an additional 1 teaspoon of matcha

You are going to cream together your stick  of butter with  sugar. To this mixture you are going to add in your baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Add in the eggs and mix until it all comes together. I like adding in my eggs one at a time so that I know what is going on with the texture. 

Now you are going to want to sift the matcha into the flour and pour it into mixing bowl. Sowly mixing so that all of the ingredients are incorporated. And so you don’t have a major green mess you have to clean up. 

If you want the extra teaspoon of matcha add it to a plate of powdered sugar and set it to the side. 

Using a cookie scoop, or two normal teaspoon spoons scoop the balls into about 1 and ½ tablespoon balls of dough. This measurement relative. Just go with how you are feeling. But let me remind of something important. Matcha has caffeine. 

Roll the balls in the granulated sugar and then the match and powdered sugar. 

Place them on the baking sheet and bake the for about 11 minutes, or so the recipe says. I am sorry, it is nothing against the recipe author or anything. But when making cookies I always start with 8 minutes, and add time if needed. Because like my mom has said for many years and I am starting to say “ You can always add time you can’t take it away.”

If you like green tea, these cookies are for you. If you had a Shrek themed party you had to make something for real quick this recipe would be perfect. Also you have to remember that Matcha is tea. And it has caffeine! DO NOT EAT THIS AFTER DINNER! I speak fro experience. My gosh, having seven people not being able to sleep because of something you made feels bad. 

The results of these cookies is a little half and half. Some people liked them and some of us didn’t like it. It all depends on your thoughts on green tea and the flavor.

so I’m an autistic and I struggled my whole life with language (I’m not gonna give u a headache with it so…) , but recently I feel really dumb like I can’t express myself with words like at all, I can’t write it down or speak it so therefore I can’t explain my thoughts and feel stupid bc how the hell im gonna provide an opinion or a solution on a thing that really concerns me or that I really have passion for it if I can’t even speak my mind.

it’s really sad like I’m silent most of the time bc every time I open my mouth to say even the simplest thing I forget every fking word that is in a language and my mouth hang open while no words coming out like I’m lagging. Sometimes I even say gibberish trying my hardest to say stupid shit like "I want water"😃

So my questions are do you have any advice or tips that I can improve my speech and my using of words with? or do you think it’s not fixable with reading and writing and I should probably see speech therapist? Thank you 💙

okay, hii (..◜ᴗ◝..)

first, i want you to know that even though i studied linguistics, i only took one course related to speech impairments and specific language impairment (SLI). i saw the theory, i never practiced it.

so first of all, your ask isn’t dumb! the way you described what you’re experiencing—the feeling of being locked out of language, the silence, the lagging, the gibberish—that’s real, and it actually makes a lot of sense in light of how speech production works in the brain.

let me break this down a little. in spoken language, there are multiple stages that need to line up instantly when we talk. there's conceptualization (figuring out what you want to say), formulation (finding the words and grammar), and articulation (saying the words with your mouth). for most people, this happens naturally. but when even one stage gets disrupted, we experience what you described.

this is about your brain handling language differently. and especially with autism. there’s actually a body of work in speech-language pathology showing that neurodivergent people often process and produce language in nonlinear ways. that means your ability to express yourself isn’t broken—it’s just that some of the stages you’ve got to get it out sometimes don’t cooperate. for example, you can’t sync the motor commands to your mouth in time. that can be affected by stress, fatigue, or sensory overload.

now, as for your question: whether this can be improved, or whether it’s time to see a speech therapist. from my perspective, both are true.

i know speech therapy is mostly marketed towards kids—but, it’s also for adults. a speech-language pathologist or speech therapist who understands neurodivergence can help you build strategies to give your brain more reliable tools to communicate.

that said, there are things you can do on your own, like:

practice saying what you’re thinking in your head.

record voice notes or videos. even if it’s messy, it helps build fluency and gives you a non-judgmental space. some foreign language teachers recommend this to help their students become more comfortable with speaking.

reduce the pressure. i know that’s easier said than done. but anxiety literally jams the speech centers of the brain. when you’re calm, words have a better chance of coming through.

ultimately, if it feels like this is seriously getting in the way of your life, i’d absolutely encourage seeing a speech therapist or a speech-language pathologist if you can. this is about access, not fixing. you already have the thoughts, the goal is just to build a bridge to get them out.

you're not dumb. you're someone with a different cognitive-linguistic profile, navigating a world that wasn’t really designed with that in mind.

Post Human Studies: Homo Florophagi

Many post human species have rather natural origins: a colony of human stranded on a world over thousands of years into the millions adapts to their circumstances, high gravity causes increases in bone density or toxic atmospheres creating more able to filter out toxins at the cost of low oxygen intake.

Homo Florophagi or the Human Locust are in fact not the result of quiet Evolution taking its course upon the human form distorting it into whatever brilliant new arrangements are possible. No the human locust are examples of homo sapiens’s folly, the idea that all outcomes can be predicted. That with enough information anything can be accounted for. Because the one thing that was not accounted for with the genesis of these locusts was human error.

To err is human too forgive is divine. The creators of the human locusts were profoundly human. When mankind first left Earth one of the questions that arose was how best to suit planets the ecological state of terra formation. Dead worlds or worlds without any noticeable atmosphere and few traces of native life contatry to most popular beliefs where some of the easiest to be settled during the spring time of mankind. Then came the question of those that already had complex ecosystems. Another common misconception is that mankind's colonization efforts were United under one single entity. This is incorrect mankind has never been united and with the events of the Fall of the Galactic Order it is very unlikely that they will ever be as they are now scattered to the stars.

To make a long diatribe short one of the proposed solutions to worlds with already established ecosystems were Homo Florophagi. An offshoot of baseline humanity mixed with xenotypical, chortoicetes terminifera, coptotermes formosanus, ornithorhynchus anatinus, as well as other similar species.

The base idea behind them was this: if we can introduce a pest to a world that has a virgin ecosystem that is so divergent from Earth it would make sustained life more difficult than once the ecosystem is sufficiently destabilized invasive species can be introduced to restabilize the planet in a more earthlike direction. The question then went to what is the basis of most ecosystems and that went to the plant. Now the plant is a life form that has emerged again and again across the universe it is seemingly one of the simplest forms of complex life to emerge.

Thus the florophagi - a species with the relative intelligence of humanity, the eusocial behavior of most insect species mixed into it, shortened gestational periods in leathery eggs, and the ability to devour any and all plant life it finds. Its face, limbs, and digits work extended it's teeth reduced more to protruding clicking buck teeth. The human locust no longer walk upright for prolonged periods of time however the increased strength given to most of its limbs allows it to climb on surfaces in search of food long denied to bipedal mankind. Jaws that one might find in North American Beaver with multiple lines of molars to grind down food forming a jawline that is constantly growing new teeth as old ones are worn out. Because of the way their eggs function as an added benefit they are born hungry.

A human locust will emerge ready to devour anything in the vicinity including other eggs and then swiftly move on to join the rest of its colony in devouring whatever plant life it can find.

Such a destructive species in field testing did in fact destabilize most of the ecosystems it was present in. Once all available plant life was consumed, colonies would go on to devour animals, and then each other. Within approximately one decade, a colony of one hundred expanded to one three hundred million and had completely rendered barren landmass the size of Old North America. Within a year of the last other food sources being gone, the colony collapsed in on itself and the example specimens functioning exactly as intended. They were born hungry and they would die hungry.

The human locust would in most cases be considered arousing success by its creators sending it to frontier worlds waiting for the population boom and then collapse and then stepping in once all were confirmed dead to rebuild the world in Old Earth's likeness. Many other human factions objected to the use of the human genome in such a way but the Creators only pointed to their successes.

Until a colony got loose.

AlI it took was one cage improperly closed.

And all those hubris the creators of this monster and it is difficult to call them a monster for though they are destructive it is not by choice and it is not their fault they did not desire to be created as such but the one thing that their creators forgot and all their humorous was that they had given their children human intelligence. The ability to exchange information, the ability to speak and dirt though much changed by the protruding jawline, jutting joints, and hairless skin.

All it took was one colony getting loose on a ship that they were able to observe how to pilot and they would never go hungry again.

To this day the descendants of the original homo florophagin remain a pest across two galaxies.

I cannot blame them.

Mosaic (Akumabug)

Adrien glanced around his room, now illuminated by telltale blue embers of time, and felt every nerve in his body light in alarm as Bunnyx's exhausted form stumbled through the portal that had blazed into existence. He rushed to her side as she collapsed on the floor, shuddering coughs tearing through her throat.

"Bunnyx? Are you alright?" He asked in a rush as he helped her up. "D-doesn't matter," she choked. "Something terrible has happened, and you're our only shot at fixing it." Leaning on Adrien, she raised a trembling hand to the air, faint sparks dancing along her fingers. A second portal flashed before them, and Adrien exchanged a worried glance with Plagg before calling on his transformation and helping Bunnyx through. The interior of the Burrow was as harrowing as it always was, but for an entirely different reason than normal- the infinite number of rippling windows into time that usually greeted travelers, bekoning them with whispered could-have-been's and might-be's were absent, leaving the endless white abyss to expand into oblivion. With no sense of space within this void of time, Adrien searched for something to focus on to keep his head from spinning. Bunnyx was in rough shape, even worse than he'd initially realized. Her usually sharp gaze was clouded with pain and fear, and her rabbit ears were pinned back, occasionally flicking nervously. She seemed to be steading herself, prepairing for something, but each breath seemed to bring her some amount of distress. There was something else about her too, something he couldn't quite place, something wrong about her that his eyes refused to focus on, but for the life of him he couldn't figure out what. A million questions raced through his mind, fighting to be asked, but he settled on the simplest he could manage. "What happened, Alix?"

It could have been a second before she responded, or a minute. In this fathomless space, it felt like an eternity.

"...Have you ever wondered what would happen if you were akumatized?"

"I try not to think about thing's that won't happen."

A dry laugh echoed through the Burrow. "Good one, but its less that it won't happen and more that you can't allow it to. If a miraculous wielder as powerful as you were akumatized, it would be catastrophic. Worse than Monarch winning."

"What are you getting at? I've never been akumatized."

Bunnyx shook her head, "In your timeline, maybe, and only because we worked to undo and retroactively prevent it from ever happening."

Adrien felt his blood run cold. Undo it? Had he been akumatized before? Had he, in some far off, erased timeline, been corrupted? Bunnyx flickered like a match going out and relighting, and she fell into another coughing fit. "W-what are you saying? Did.... Did I do this to you?" Adrien finally managed.

"N-no." Bunnyx rasped. "Destruction was a gradual fade into nothingness. Now I feel like my cells are burning... Like I said, if someone as powerful as you were akumatized, it would be devestating. World ending. But you're still here..."

His heart stopped. Any distress he had felt at the idea of losing himself was gone in an instant, replaced by dawning horror of what Bunnyx was implying.

"That's impossible-" he whispered. "That could never..."

Adrien looked up, searching pained eyes. Bunnyx looked so fragile, a far cry from the strong, sassy hero he had always seen her as. The stalwart protector of ages, reduced to a shivering hare... and there, imperceptible but for the stillness of their shared stress, it was. The wrongness he hadn't been able to discern. Shimmering lines were drifting from Bunnyx's suit, the nearly invisible hexagonal mesh weave of her transformation was sloughing off her body. It was subtle, but the glimmer was unmistakable now that he had seen it- the very threads of her existence were being pulled from her being. The faint hexagons drifted mere centimeters from her surface before splitting, becoming undone. Subtle shapes curling in on themselves and twisting in on each other, endlessly. It hurt to watch, a physically excruciating thing to behold happen to a person, watching as the very fibers of their life were mutated beyond recognition. There was a word for this, for what was happening to Alix Kubdel.

She was fractalling.

Becoming mosaic.

A sputtering portal burned into existence beside them, and Bunnyx stumbled away from Adrien, barely standing, but still defiant. "Every other future has already been obliterated, or worse. This is the only timeline yours will ever lead to, if we don't fix it. I know its a lot to ask, but you're the only one that can do this... Get in, destroy the akuma, and get out. We should know enough by then to prevent this possibility from ever being realized."

Fear coiled through Adrien's veins, turning his body sluggish and unresponsive, but he forced himself to take a shuddering breath and step froward, towards the portal. Towards the unknown end of realities that existed on the other side. He could do this, he had to do this.

Behind him, he heard Bunnyx's strength give out as she collapsed to the ground, but he couldn't bring himself to look away from the task ahead of him. If he faltered for even a second, he wasn't sure he'd be able to bring himself to face it again. Every cell in his body urged him forward, to do the one thing he would always do, and every cell in his body screamed for him to run away, away, away from this impossible future.

Bunnyx's broken voice drifted through the void around him as stepped through the portal and into this finale that must be undone.

"Do what you do best, Chat Noir."

Being that we're both generally new to the game, we decided to play the simplest style of game we could; pure slaughter. Berefit of mission decks due to GW not having released a PDF of them and my having not printed out what I'd found yet, we didn't use any special mission rules. Additionally, as we had both only played 5th edition previously, we agreed to omit use of Strategems. Finally, due to how narrow my table is, the only really valid deployment style was Sweeping Engagement.

All this decided, we rolled off for first move and I (Imperial Knights) won with a 2. Armies were deployed and I engaged by moving my Paladin and Warglaives forward and firing shots into the opposing warriors, termagants, and hive tyrant. with the loss of 2 Gants, 2 Warriors, and half the Tyrant's wounds, the Tyranids responded with a frenzy of focused attacks, immediately destroying my Paladin and reducing one Warglaive to the wounded state.

The loss of my Paladin in turn1 was a shock of ice water that alerted me to just how dangerous the (only legs right now 😭😭) Barbed Hierodule was, and I immediately began backpedalling and playing defensively. There was no doubt that the surrounded Warglaive was a lost cause, and that the other would need to stand firm as a bastion between the Hierodule's wrath and the Helverins' gunline.

I backed my Helverins behind the deployment line, and placed the unwounded (and sadly not fully painted) warglaive between terrain pieces to block enemy passing. The barrage from the Helverins, with the help of the Warglaives' (terrifying) Thermal Spears, the Hive Tyrant's reign of tyranny was ended, and multiple Genestealers and Raveners with it. Finally, the doomed warglaive made a sweeping assault with it's heatblade which finished off the last of the Genestealers.

Tyranids took a lot of ground in movement of turn 2, and though they accomplished little in shooting, the fight phase was a savagery of claws and teeth that shredded the first Warglaive, and the second was lucky to survive that turn before the Hierodule's onslaught.

sadly I forgot to continue taking pictures after each turn for use in posting 😭😭😭

most of the rest of the game, after that last Warglaive's unfortunate slaughter by the last Ravener before the Hierodule got a chance at it, consisted of the two Helverins being backed into a corner firing a desperate spray from their autocannons to hold off the horde.

the Hierodule was defeated with focused fire, and that last Ravener stomped under heel like the bug it is, and it came down to just one Helverin facing off the remaining Termagants and the untouched Carnifex

The Termagants stood no chance, having dealt only one wound per turn, and the bushes they hid in were painted red.

it was a showdown now. a battle of Giants. One Helverin facing One Unharmed Carnifex. With 8 wounds each to take, the Helverin put up a fight but was crushed like the tin can it is before the Carnifex's powerful Crushing Claws, which laid it to rest with -10 wounds.

Today's battle was very close, but a Tyranid victory. Well played and thank you for the game @amanitabones !

okokok because this gq shoot is already one of my favs from chris ok so hear me out:

seb comes along to every interview, premiere and event chris goes to. he's happy to watch his boyfriend mingle with the reporters and answer their questions, just happy to be around chris, talking to his publicist when he's busy off getting his photo taken. but when it's shoot day?

seb brings his camera.

he literally has a whole folder in his phone with hundreds of photos of chris posing for another camera, and others of chris just sitting there, looking perfect and handsome as ever, some of him taking sips of water from a straw and close ups of his mouth wrapped around it (because he's just so beautiful and seb likes getting detailed shots). chris doesn't know that seb has those photos but he finds it endearing that seb likes coming along to these shoots that can sometimes last hours and produce only a few decent shots.

seb will look at the photos when chris isn't around or when he's missing him, looking at the slight pout of his lips chris does when he's posing, the different angles of his jawline that make it appear even sharper, the cherry red of his lips, the mischievous sparkle in his eye. naturally, seb is going to have a visceral reaction to these photos and the thoughts that come along with them, but like hell is he going to let chris know he jerks off to photos of him not even doing anything. just sitting there and looking like he always does, maybe with a little more product in his hair or some lining up of his beard. he'd never let chris know the simplest of poses get seb off.

but he doesn't have to, because seb eventually gets too desperate one day when chris is out - shopping for gods sake - and starts touching himself. he's so wrapped up in feeling good that he doesn't notice chris has been standing in the doorway watching him fuck his fist to a photo from a fresh shoot, one where they used less natural lighting and shadows to make the hard lines of chris face stand out and the veins running from his hands to his forearms stand out.

sebs imagining being manhandled by those hands when chris does just that, striding into the room and taking sebs wrists, growling out something about being 'so desperate he couldn't even wait a few hours?' and sebs cheeks burn with further humiliation when chris spots the photo of him on his phone, scrolling a few more times and seeing more of the same type of pictures.

chris promptly reminds seb that he shouldn't need to look at photos of chris to get off because he has the real thing right here, right now, warm and solid between his legs.

"How about I give you a reminder of what you get to come home to every day, huh? These pictures can't touch you, can't fuck you like you need so badly. But I can - will you let me do rhat for you, baby? Let me make you feel good?"

chris starts kissing him before seb can reply and, yes, of course seb fucking wants that.
