Lily and Regulus in a corner talking when they see James coming over: Regulus: Wanna make him think we’re conspiring against him? Lily: Fuck yeah. *James approaches* Lily: So you wanna do it? Regulus: Of course. At night right? Lily: Midnight sharp. Regulus: Should we use a scalpel or a dagger? James: what are you guys talking about? Lily and Regulus: Nothing. Regulus, in a silky voice: Not about you, James don’t worry. James: *Panicked all of a sudden*

sister · @black-brothers-microfic · word count: 847 · cw: trans person coming out (no angst)
'Do I look good?' Regulus' eyes were closed. She could feel a constant tickling on her eyelid, but she wouldn't dare to move.
'You always do, Reggie.' Sirius' voice was calm, soothing. She was so close her citric scent crawled up Regulus' nose and stayed there, familiar and comfortable.
'No, but really.'
'Yeah, really.' Sirius let out a low chuckle and Regulus could imagine that annoying sly grin she always wore on her face. She would have shoved her if her older sister didn't have a sharp pencil pressing on the top line of her eye.
Elton John was singing in the background and, in other circunstances, Regulus would have judged Sirius for her questionable taste on music, but there was only one thought on her mind.
Finally.
She was doing it. They were doing it.
It was scary. She couldn't stop sweating and Sirius wouldn't stop yelling "stop moving your knee or I'll tie you up to the chair!" and blowing hair into her nose, making Regulus squirm and finding another excuse to groan.
But it was happening.
Even if Regulus hadn't wanted to accept it, she had always known it would end up coming to this. After years of self-hate, of doubts, of pure and sour denial. After months of self-acceptance, of sneaky readings and overwhelming and sweet hope.
She had finally say it to Sirius.
'I'm a girl.'
'I'm one too.' Sirius had only answered, giving another bite to the chocolate bar she was eating.
'Doesn't it bother you?' Regulus then asked, anxiety running through her blood.
'Not really? You're still Reg, my Reggie, my sister.' She gave her one of wolf-like smiles, all full of white, shiny teeth.
And the word stroke him like a wave, soaking into her bones, settling in her heart.
Sister.
It sounded so fitting, like the piece of the puzzle that had always been missing.
'I don't want Father and Mother to know.’
'Then they won't know.'
'But l hate having to wear those ugly shirts and trousers.’
'I can lend you my tops and skirts if you want.’
'But maybe they'll look too big on me.’
'I can ask Lily to stitch them up. Did you know she's a pro at sewing?'
'I want to try your red lipstick.'
'Oh, it would look killer on you.’
'But I don't know how to do it properly. Would it be too much?'
'Make up is never too much, Reggie. Want me to give you a makeover? We are alone until late today.’
And that’s how they ended up like that. Regulus sitting in the middle of Sirius’ room, the record endlessly spinning under the needle and Sirius humming while she did whatever she wanted to Regulus’ face.
It had been a while since Regulus’ had felt comfortable in their house. She wouldn’t even dare to call it "home", but Sirius made it all easier, always lighting the darkest corners and distracting Regulus from the horrible things that happened too often. She was her precious sister and, even if little Regulus hadn’t valued it enough, she was sure of it now. Sirius really saw her for who she was.
‘Okay, it’s done.’ Sirius said, and Regulus stayed still for a little more. She was afraid of opening her eyes, of seeing something so real, so her, it would break her apart.
‘Don’t be afraid, Reg. I’m the best at make up, you know? I did James’ once and he loved it!’
Sirius was just trying to cheer her up, Regulus knew that, but it still worked. She felt confident enough too slowly open her eyes and focus her gaze on the mirror in front of her.
It was a snap, her eyes meeting hers and, in an instance, everything was in its right place. She knew she didn't need make-up or clothes or any material stuff to make her be sure of who she was, but seeing herself from this new perspective was another step taken, small but significant.
And she loved it. She loved how the dark blue eyeshadow intensified her grey eyes, how the soft pink blush enlightened her cheeks, how the red lipstick, the one that Sirius always wore and made her yearn for something deep and intense, fit her so well it made her wonder "why did it took me so long?". And as if Sirius had listened to her thoughts, she placed her hands on her shoulders and smiled at her in the mirror before just saying:
'Everything comes down to this moment, right?'
And she knew what her sister meant. Because it was not about some colorful powders on her face or about yelling it so loud all the neighbourhood would know. It could just be a whisper or even a thought, it would also be a feeling than only a few could get, and it was, of course, the comfort of sharing that moment with her sister and knowing that she would always be safe with her.
She hold the tears back and gave her sister a big, genuine grin.
'Thank you, Sirius.'

Note
you should totally talk about ur lily more😔 (pleasepleaplepleasepleaspeleaapleaase)
Sigh, I have a very love-hate relationship with Lily with how some of her fans can get. Unfortunately, I did post about her at some point but took it down. Truthfully, I do love her in my own personal way.
Anyways, here's some headcanons:
-She's from Spain and was raised Catholic. Her family moved to the UK and unlike Petunia, Lily settled kinda well while Petunia wasn't used to the sudden change in environment. They moved when Lily was 10 and Petunia was 12.
-I feel like people will hate me for this, but I think her friendship with Severus was one of the most important ones. First friend-first love kinda of thing. They were each other's first person and even when they part ways, Lily will still feel fond of him even when they both wronged each other (because there is no way in hell two lonely teens weren't gonna hurt each other one way or another). Modern AU version of them is just two teenage girls who don't know where the boundaries of romantic-platonic end and begin which causes a lot of weird feelings and toxicity (don't ask how I know that)
-She's like one of those people who are like "Stop doing that, you're making me stressed", and the other person just placed a book in a different place. There is always a certain way she likes things done because she feels like works better, so if another way is introduced, she will be skeptical about its efficiency
-I don't see her reading fiction books all that much. She would much prefer biographies to draw her life inspirations from, literature essays to validate her internal points, and poems for small readings to just relax with. I think if she would read nonfiction, they would definitely have an overall message that she obsesses over. However, I think she would LOVE magazines.
-Not all that into movies, I don't think she would have the patience to watch them.
-We as a fandom must never forget her skill for potions. I think in the muggle world, she was very into chemistry (I've always found this funny stereotype about religious people not liking stuff like chemistry)
-Much more easily agitated during the war. Her head was constantly filling with regrets and a back-and-forth desire to run back to Petunia or stay with the Order. Once Harry was born, she kinda had this melancholy look about her, she won't be able to return or try to make amends with her sister for a long long time, or if she's even able to. At every meeting, she had a frustrated look in her eye but when she was pregnant/after Harry's birth, she just looked like she was reluctantly accepting a terrible fate. She's happy with the family she's crafted for herself but also misses when she didn't have to go through the loneliness of making one for herself because she had Petunia and that was more than enough for Lily.
-I don't think she regrets helping muggles at all. That's not what I'm saying. I'm more in the thinking that she wanted to the comfort of her own family in a such difficult time. Jealously when Regulus dies, Sirius can finally mourn and put his family to rest while Lily fears for her family's life every day as they live, living in regret and feeling like an outcast. James and his parents and her desire for her mother when she's pregnant, yes Effie is kind, but she isn't Lily's mom. Remus has the comfort of knowing his family is safe because Lyall is a wizard, and the same can go for Peter. Lily's family probably doesn't even know what was happening.
-All that anger and frustration kinda boils over and I WISH that JK Rowling made her more angry before her death. Lily's life was unfair! She deserved to yell and scream, plea for her son's life but also cuss out Voldemort. Screaming and crying (literally), shaking with fear but also anger, and I know, female characters can be soft/sensitive/emotional, it's not a bad thing. It's just I wish she was more angry/a mess because she was seen as a witty, sharp-tongued girl! This stereotypical fierce redhead! I would've been fine with her simply pleading for her son's life even in the most pathetic way (no shame) but her personality was established as being very fierce by JK Rowling!! But this could honestly be just me and yes, I know, situations change people sometimes. I just wished there was more anger, or maybe I'm angry on her behalf lol
-Teenage Lily is the helpless romantic, the girl who reads real-life love stories to prove love is real, the girl who cheers her boyfriend on the field, and the girl with gum and finished homework notes that could be given to anyone who needed them. But 20-21 year old Lily the tired woman who cried for her mother when she had her first child, the tired woman who wanted her sister's hugs again, the tired woman with sickly green eyes and moved too slowly for a woman in her early 20s, and the tired woman who watched everyone like a hawk at Order meetings that talked of more death. She sits in the corner, the chair seemingly too big for her, or anyone for that matter, and watches with frustrations simmering under her eyes. Sometimes give a cutting remark that Sirius laughs to.

ASFTEOTW: Chapter 18 Commentary
This chapter of A Song for the End of the World is a little bit sexy at the end. But first we gotta get through some plot stuff.
Previous Chapter < > Next Chapter
There’s a term used by the military to describe a high-impact event that is difficult to predict under normal circumstances but that, in retrospect, appears to have been inevitable. This is known as a black swan event.  Because a black swan is, by definition, unexpected. Fundamentally hard to prepare for. It’s only after the fact, in hindsight, that the black swan is rationalised by those who survived it and so understood to have been unavoidable. Of course, the military had protocols for everything, including black swans. These protocols focused on handling situations of uncertainty using a structured framework that accounted for having incomplete information.  The problem is that the military is made up of humans, and humans are abysmally susceptible to black swans. There are two reasons for this: the first is that humans like to create narratives to understand the world, but they can only create narratives based on their reflections of the past. The second reason stems from the first: humans tend to believe that the past is a reliable predictor of the future. There’s also the pesky little matter of confirmation bias, which prevents humans from seeing evidence that contradicts their existing beliefs; their understanding of how things have happened in the past. Of how things should be.  So, when something entirely unexpected happens like, say, a zombie apocalypse…well. They were all just humans, grasping at tools that saved them in the past, trying to beat the black swan.  But there’s the rub: you don’t know a black swan is a black swan until after it’s already beaten you.
I am not a military geek at all. But I've learned a bunch of interesting trivia through my research for this fic. The term "black swan" in this context is not specifically a military term (i.e. it's also used in economics, by historians, etc.), but it is used by the military. I pulled the concepts from this Britannica article. I loved this concept as a narrative device for the second part of the story, and if you're caught up in the story, you'll know why.
Giving Remus’s hand a quick squeeze, Sirius runs to fall in step with Regulus. Crouch hangs close on the other side of the younger Black brother, eyeing Sirius suspiciously.  As Remus follows them, he overhears Sirius demand, “Reg, what the hell is going on?”  “Que fais-tu ici?” Regulus hisses at Sirius without breaking his straight-backed stride.  Not missing a beat, Sirius responds in rapid French. “Je t'ai demandé en premier.” “Je pensais que tu serais parti avec les Potter.” “Évidemment non.” Remus has no idea what they’re saying, but he notices the way Regulus does not respond to whatever Sirius just said. Sirius continues impatiently, “Où sont maman et papa?”  “Plus tard.” “Non, Reg, dis-moi maintenant! Et qu’est ce-que tu fais avec cette putain d'épée?” Regulus shoves past Sirius as they enter the sitting room, following Dolohov and Shacklebolt to where they’ve gathered by the fireplace. “Are you alright?” Remus asks Sirius in a low voice. Sirius exhales a sharp, frustrated breath, running a hand through his hair. “Just looks like the zombie fucking apocalypse hasn’t changed him at all.”
I put this in the chapter's notes, but in this story, Sirius and Reg speak several languages, including French, Latin, and Italian, though their primary language is English. They use French to speak privately in front of others.
Also, yes, I will gratuitously drop the line "the zombie fucking apocalypse" whenever I feel like it.
“Remus! I thought better of you!” He rubs the back of his neck. “Yeah, well” “That’s not important right now,” Sirius cuts, waving a hand. “What matters is that the sneaky git revealed Remus’s immunity to complete strangers. What is he playing at?” “It’s like he said in his letter,” Lily says, glancing down at the crumpled paper in her hands. “He thinks this is our best chance at survival.” “And do we trust him?” James asks with an edge to his voice.  Remus expects Lily to get defensive, but he’s surprised to see her expression turn pensive instead.  “Severus isn’t the type to take chances. He would have put a lot of thought into this before acting.”  McGonagall nods in agreement. “Yes, he has always been a calculating boy. I believe he did this with the right intentions.”  Sirius and James share a sceptical look.  “But how do we know he isn’t doing this for him? For some gain of his own?” James presses.  “He isn’t,” Lily says with conviction. “In his letter he. Well.” James turns to her fully, brow furrowed. “What?”  Lily chews on her lower lip, a faint blush painting her cheeks. “He, ah. He said he loves me. And he wants me to be safe.”  James’s jaw twitches. “He did?”  Sirius makes a disgusted noise. Lily shuffles her feet and nods. “Yes. I didn’t—I had no idea he felt that way.”  James’s chest rises and falls with his breathing. His posture is tense, his next words coming out clipped. “And you?” Lily’s eyes widen, and she shakes her head. “Of course not!”  “I’m sorry to interrupt, but we must focus on the matter at hand,” McGonagall cuts in, her voice soft but firm.  “Y-yes, of course!” Lily says quickly. But James continues to watch her with trepidation.
Snape!! *shakes fist* Regulus addresses him without preamble. “What are you exactly to my brother?”  “I’m not sure how much he would want me to say.” “Are you his boyfriend?”  Remus tilts his head, trying to read the younger boy’s expression. Is Regulus bigoted like their parents? Sirius hadn’t mentioned him sharing their views, but then again, he hasn’t told him much about Regulus at all.  “Why do you want to know?” Irritation passes across Regulus’s face—an echo of the irritated look he sometimes sees on Sirius.  “Do you care about him?” “...’Course I do. Now, why are you asking?” Regulus raises his chin imperiously. “I don’t care to know the details of your relationship, but given my brother’s tendency towards rash behaviour, I feel it’s my duty to speak to you. I’ll say this only once: you should be careful about flaunting your relationship in front of others.” Uneasiness ripples through him. “Why? Is there someone who would harm us? Should we be worried about going to Gaunt Farm?” It’s unsettling how quickly the irritation melts away from Regulus’s face, leaving his expression smooth and impassive again. A practised skill in the House of Black, apparently. “You should know by now that harm can happen anywhere. Gaunt Farm is safer than any alternative, but you should always keep your attachments close to your chest.”  This doesn’t do much to soothe him. “Is that why you’re giving Sirius the cold shoulder?” “My relationship with my brother is of no one’s concern.” “It’s a bit of my concern, what with his and my attachment.” “It isn’t. I don’t know what my brother has told you about me, but trust that you will never understand what it is to be a part of our family.” Well, he can’t argue with that point. “He told me he wishes he’d taken you with him. When he left your parents’ home. He misses you.”  There’s the slightest twitch to Regulus’s eyebrow, the corner of his mouth. “My brother is stubborn. And idealistic.” “And you’re not?” “No. I’m a realist. Which is why I’m making the effort to talk to you at all, in the hopes that you have even a shred more sense than he does.”  “Right. Well. This has certainly been reassuring.” Remus stuffs his hands into his pockets. “Look. Just be straight with me. Is Sirius going to be safe at Gaunt Farm? And the rest of our friends? Because this is something that I need to do, but if they’re going to be put in danger, then we’re leaving now without them.”  Regulus rolls his eyes. “Please. Travelling at night would be suicide. Besides, you know my brother won’t forgive you if you leave, don’t you?” So Regulus does know Sirius well. Remus knows he’s right. He doesn't want to leave without Sirius. He made a promise that he wouldn't leave again without telling him. But if it's between breaking a promise and saving his life, he'll do what he needs to do.  “He’ll be angry, but I’d rather he be angry with me and alive than the alternative.” Regulus regards him for a drawn-out moment before answering. “They’ll be safe, as long as they keep their wits about them.“  Remus levels him with his own stare. “Good. I’m going to believe you because you’re Sirius’s brother, and you’re important to him. But if anyone threatens them, I’m not going to think twice about doing something about it.”  Regulus doesn’t even flinch. Like he’d expected as much. He nods.
“Understood.”  “Oh, and also? I think Sirius had more sense than you give him credit for.”
I am not a moonwater girly, but I do have so much fun writing scenes with Remus and Regulus. I feel like they have a similar energy.
And yes, I do think Remus would break a promise if he felt it was warranted.
But check out Remus defending his boyfriend!!
Remus: Um, actually 😤 Sirius has a ton of sense 😤 So how about you watch your mouth 😤
Xeno smiles. “We’re at a fork in the road. Everyone can feel it. Some of us will take one road, and some will take the other. It seems like a good time to meet my own destiny.” Xeno’s words are simultaneously hopeful and foreboding—two contradicting forces that unsettle Remus deeply. “We’re only going ahead of you. Then we’ll send for the rest of you,” he tells Xeno. Xeno lowers his hands and looks at Remus properly. “Do you trust the group from Gaunt Farm?” Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, Remus says, “Not really. But if there’s a chance that I can help them make the vaccine, I have to try. Also…Sirius’s brother is with them.” Xeno nods slowly, like he puts real weight in Remus’s words.  “Yes, sometimes we must take risks for love. You’re brave, Mystery Man. If we don’t see each other again, I hope destiny treats you well.” He smiles at Remus. Feeling heavy and a little sadder than he anticipated, Remus smiles back.  “Same to you. But we’ll radio you when we get there. This isn’t the last you’ll hear from me.”  Xeno doesn’t respond. Still smiling, he returns to his game. As Remus turns to leave, he stops, calling over his shoulder, “Oh, and say hello to Panda for me, if you find her.” “When,” Xeno says easily.  “When,” he amends.
Xeno! You underrepresented weirdo. I adore writing him as a mystic oracle kid.
Xeno: I dunno man, those guys seem wack. You sure you and your soulmate wanna go to their creepy farm?
Remus and Xeno, I will write a buddy comedy about you two one day!!
He traces the bridge of his nose up the length of Sirius’s neck to the spot below his ear and back down, so he can feel the shivers it sends across Sirius’s skin, the hitch in his breath. As he does this, he slips his hands lower, under Sirius’s shirt, so he can stroke the soft, smooth skin of his stomach, the trail of hair below his belly button. His hands drag Sirius’s hands with them, and he feels Sirius push against his hands as they splay across his stomach, then lower, pressing against the sharp juts of his hip bones. His senses are flooded with Sirius—the heat of his body, the sound of his breath stuttering and speeding up, the smell of him, the pressure of his hands gently urging him on his path of exploration.  “You’re so beautiful, cariad,” Remus murmurs into his ear. Later, he will reprimand himself for being so needy and so carelessly close to Sirius. But right now, he feels swept up in the moment, like the world around him is closing in so all he can focus on is the sound of Sirius’s breath, the warmth of his skin, and the small movements he makes in his arms, against his front. “Sometimes I can’t believe how beautiful you are.” Sirius strokes a hand up Remus’s arm to the elbow, then reaches up to feel the curls at the nape of his neck, stretching his body against him. Sirius's arse is flat against his front, and he's sure Sirius can feel him hardening. It's equal parts embarrassing and thrilling.  “Tch. You sure are laying it on thick suddenly," Sirius says, but he sounds pleased, and Remus wants so badly to please him. Emboldened, Remus smooths his hands up the flat plane of Sirius’s torso until he feels the ridges of his ribs and the rise and fall of his breathing. He wants Sirius so viscerally that it hurts. “You could do so much better than me,” he says mournfully, burying his face in Sirius’s neck again, feeling his tendon move as he swallows through the thin fabric of the mask. “You deserve someone who can give you everything.”  He feels Sirius sigh, then turn around in his arms, ringed fingers wrapping around the back of his neck. The air between them feels pulled taut like an elastic band, so taut it could snap at any moment, and then they'll be crashing into each other.  “Stop that,” Sirius says fiercely, staring straight into his eyes, “I bloody adore you, Moony. God, I just—I like you so much. Stop trying to pull away from me.” Tears prick at the corners of Remus's eyes. Sirius continues to look at him, unflinching and beautiful, and it feels like he’s looking directly at the sun. I should take a step back, Remus thinks, I should put some safe distance between us, this is too close, it's too risky… But then something flashes across Sirius’s face—a look of determination that Remus has come to recognise. Sirius pulls back from him, and it sends Remus’s mind reeling, because he just told him not to pull away, so why…? Remus takes a bewildered step forward, but Sirius stops him with a hand pressed firmly against his chest.  “I have an idea.” “What?” “If you could touch me properly, where would you start?” His voice catches in his throat. “But we shouldn’t.” “But if you could.” Sirius holds his gaze, and Remus notices that his posture is relaxed and open. Unguarded. In fact, his mouth is quirked into a small smile, one eyebrow cocked invitingly—a challenge, then. “If you could touch me anywhere you wanted, however you wanted, without needing to worry about it, what would you do?”
*fans self* Whew! I'm not going to share the rest here, but if you've read it, you know how it goes. It felt like the right time for R and S to take their relationship to a new level of physical intimacy, even if they can't touch each other the way they want to. I wanted this scene to be sexy but also vulnerable and sweet. Sirius recognises what Remus needs in this moment, and he offers a way to work around it so that they can still feel that intimacy they both crave. The night before they leave the inn felt like the right time for this scene, because the uncertainty of the next day would give them (particularly Remus) that little push that they need.
The action really gets going in the next chapter! Ahhh!

warnings: none that I can think of
Regulus and James have been arguing a lot recently. For example, two weeks ago James told Regulus he'd be back at his dorm at 10:00 sharp. Regulus didn't bother asking where he was going, no, not until 1:30 in the morning when James had finally arrived back.
"James?" Regulus had asked, looking around the dark room before flipping on the light next to James' bed.
"Sorry, Reg, did I wake you?" James muttered, taking off his shoes and jumper before crawling next to Regulus in his bed. Regulus stood up, ignoring his question.
"Where were you, James?" He asked, his fingers stabbing into the bridge of his nose.
"With Lily, she was helping me with potions homework." James said, pushing his glasses up on his nose.
"Really, James? You couldn't have sent me a quick letter to tell me you were gonna be gone longer? And potions? I'm the best at potions!" James rolls his eyes.
"So, what? I was just hanging out with Lily!" Regulus feels his jaw drop.
"I got sick over it, James! I was actually scared sick! And your excuse for being nearly 5 hours late back home is, you wanted to hang out with Evans?" Regulus exclaims, his arms flailing around as punctuation.
"If you were that sick you could've come to her dorm and looked for me."
"I did look for you." James' face pales and he looks down guiltily. "Then my brother had to help me calm down because I was getting sick in his dorm!"
"Look, Reg, I'm sorry, okay?"
He wasn't sorry. He has been doing it every few nights since then, and Regulus is used to it at this point. He shouldn't be. That's unfair. So, tonight, when James gets home almost a full 7 hours past when he said he'd be back, and Regulus is waiting for him.
"James." Regulus says, his eyes are twitching.
"Regulus?" James asks, sitting across from him at the table.
"Choose." James looks puzzled. "Me or Lily." Regulus feels as his throat and chest tighten, he can't do this anymore. He loves James, and James doesn't love him.
"What?"
"Please. Do you want me to go? Me or Lily, James."
"Lily wouldn't make me choose." Regulus nearly chokes on his own breath, staring James in the eyes.
"Right, then." Regulus picks up his beanie off the chair and heads for the door.
"What? Regulus, where are you going?" James, rushes up, trying to block the door.
"Move, Potter. You've made your choice. Lily it is. I want all my stuff back. Soon. I want everything." Regulus tries to push James out of the way, but fails.
"Can't we talk?"
"James I've fucking tried! Lily, Lily, Lily that's all I hear! Why were you out so late? Lily." Regulus lets his pent up tears fall steadily from his eyes. "Why are you nearly 7 hours late home? Lily. What is so special about her James? What does she have that I don't?" James' face crumples and he tries to hug Regulus, who just weakly punches him in the stomach. "Why don't you care about me? Why am I your second choice? The one who's sleeping in your bed at night, isn't the one you want. I want you to be happy, Jamie. Please, I beg of you, choose."
"I can't, Reg, don't you understand?" James swipes Regulus' tears away with the pads of his fingers.
"Then I'm gonna go." Regulus ducks under his arms and leaves the dorm, walking off to his dorm where it's almost unfamiliar because of how little he goes in there.

Silly Mauraders thoughts
(Mostly centered around appearances)
I cannot get these stupid thoughts off my mind and most of them aren’t new but yk
- Sirius and regulus are black with sharp features — high cheekbones, upturned eyes, hooked noses, etc— and cooler undertones
- Pandora and Evan are twins, black and Polynesian with soft features — rounder facial features and warm undertones
*these first two are simply aesthetic and based on one piece of fanart comparing the two sets of siblings to the moon and the sun*
- the Rosiers bleached their hair together once in their tweens and never went back
- Sirius likes to wear his hair in mid length braids with the beads at the end
-Regulus either just keeps his hair natural and takes good care of his curls or he’s grown locs (I cannot decide between one atm)
- Sirius and Regulus were adopted until they left and were less officially(? No paperwork essentially??) adopted by the Potters
- Pandora and Lily are fat
- Remus has a cane he uses for the chronic pain
- Remus is fluent in Spanish thanks to Hope
- Sirius has impaired hearing
- Pandora has grown her hair into locs
- Evan has an Afro taper fade kinda hairstyle
-Barty is straight up gothic
-Dorcas is The Shit but horribly awkward whereas Regulus is distant and therefore intimidating but really he’s just constantly anxious and masking it cuz people
-Lily and Remus are both Covered in smatterings of freckles
-Lily has quite a few stretch marks
-James’ father is latino and he is fluent in Spanish, his mother is desi and hes also picked up bits of Tamil from her
That is it. There’s really not a lot for a lot of characters but I already agree with most of the stuff I’ve see about them and this was really just to get current thoughts out of my head :)
I am extremely open to criticism and anyone else’s thoughts

hi! for the ask thing: 8, 9, 11, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, and/or 30 :)
so many of these answers are earth after rain because i am obsessed! this is like an essay almost lol
What fic meant the most to you to write? & What fic made you feel the happiest to work on?
8&9 are the same two answers, the only multi chapter fics i had this year, earth after rain and somewhere on lsd.
earth after rain is the only multi chapter fic i've ever finished!! and i've been very stressed this fall so it helped with escaping that. there's something very therapeutic about writing such an obsessive, unhealthy relationship, plus i'm glad mal liked it bc it was inspired by her art.
somewhere on lsd i love sm bc it takes place in chicago, where i live & grew up, and the lily & regulus & fabian friendship is based on these insane characterizations my friend (who is also from chicago) and I created. so it's like a love letter to chicago and my friend as well as jily
What fic was the most difficult to write?
unsurprisingly it's earth after rain. i paid more attention to the prose than usual to get a gothic feel, and from lily's pov i would look at the time period usage that comes up when you google a word and if it was recent i would not use the word.
plus they have some sex that is not to my taste, but very in character, so that was hard. and the blurry line between lily wanting to drink james' blood and fuck him was challenging. multiple times i dialed it back bc while I felt I was writing her in character and realistically it was becoming really not sexy. AND i'm not catholic.
What was the hardest fic to title?
i think earth after rain?? i hate titling fics and i wanted this one to also have a thematic or metaphorical meaning and sound like foggy woods
Share your favorite opening line
ig it's from earth after rain, there's a lot of something like foreshadowing. obviously rain/weather is significant here
It started raining when James left his father’s side, and it hadn’t stopped since.
Share your favorite ending line
this is from supercut, a one shot for my nichest ship, fabian/lily, which i could actually go on about for ages even tho fabian has no canon character traits. also it's multiple lines but whatever whatever.
i like how it captures the emotional moment lily would have been at 16/end of fifth year
Lily wanted so much, too much. Always, she'd stemmed her hunger, hid the ravenous, the instinct, sex, anger, the sharp bits of her that cut. Fabian liked it when she cut. When she bit into him. He wanted more. She’d give it, happily.
Share your funniest line
i think somewhere on lsd is very funny but a lot of it is longer dialogue so here's something short
“A weirdo you want to bend you over the—” Lily slapped Marlene on the shoulder. “Shut up! The only thing I want is… a good tip.” “What kind of tip?”
What's something that surprised you while you were working on a fic? Did it change the story?
I answered this for earth after rain but god i want to make myself think about another fic. i wrote a little one shot with sirius & his mom where we see sirius being parentified and i didn't intend for him to be parentified when i started, just to show his similarities to his mother. interesting tho bc harry kind of is parentified in his relationship with sirius 👀
What writing programs did you use? Did you write by hand?
i use google docs and scrivner (i paid for it, i do like it a lot)
What would you like to write next year?
more canon!! i want to write more character exploring stuff, more one shots, I have an idea for a series of james pov one shots all based off of lines of the same song so I realllly want to actually do that. i also have a hunger games au fjdklsfj that i want to start publishing in the new year.
also bc i need to write unhealthy relationships, ig, teacher/student jily set in 1990s wizarding world (lily is like 25 and james is like 45 and married)

This!!! James's struggle with internalized homophobia is so important to me because he grew up in such an accepting environment. Realizing your queerness and coming out is still hard, especially because the queer self-doubt can double down as guilt when you think, 'I shouldn't be scared, these people have always loved me,' but you're scared anyway and that sucks.
So, I offer this excerpt from one of my fics that can be read as microfic where James comes out to Effie. I hope it sheds some light on how internalized homophobia can creep up on you, and that it is okay! We are all learning and growing!
“This reminds me, studying with Lily is a fairly new development, isn’t it?” The teasing in Effie’s tone is unmistakable. He wonders when people will stop thinking he’s still into Lily.
“I told you, mum. Lily and I are friends. Just friends.”
“Well, you just seemed so happy in your past letters. I thought it might have something to do with her.”
“It doesn’t.” He doesn’t mean for the words to sound sharp, but they do anyway.
His mother doesn’t comment on it aside from “Alright, then.”
They finally reach the castle’s front doors. As soon as James opens them, he shivers; autumn is eagerly paving the way for winter. It rained the entire day, and the moisture that lingers in the air clings to him like frost. His mother absentmindedly casts a warming charm over them, and James thanks her. For a few seconds, there’s only the squishing of the wet grass beneath their shoes until James musters the courage to speak again. “Mum? I have to tell you something.”
“What is it, darling?”
“I am seeing someone, but it’s not Lily.”
“Oh.” She blinks, surprised, but quickly recovers. “Anyone I know?”
James looks down at his feet, watching them sink into the muddy lawn with every step. “It’s complicated.”
“I can do complicated.”
He doesn’t answer right away.
When James thinks about his life with Reg, his parents are always there to support them. He has a clear picture of their future in his mind. Several, actually, most of them just inconsequential day-to-day stuff that he can’t wait to live.
His favorite is a Sunday dinner. All his family is there. His parents, Sirius, Reg. Sometimes Moony and Pete too. They’re all sitting at the table together, talking and laughing and teasing. Regulus smiles while discussing potions theory with Monty until Effie tells them ‘no shoptalk during meals.’ Later, Reg absentmindedly rests his hand on James’s knee, waiting for him to finish his second helping of dessert before they can clean up the table. Regulus grumbles something about doing the dishes the muggle way because Effie prefers it to spells, and Sirius tells him to stop complaining and pass him the soap. James and Regulus go back to their flat afterward, full of good food and laughter, ready to fall into each other.
James can picture all of this, he just never thought much about the moment he would have to tell his parents about it to get there. He is not embarrassed about being who he is, but it feels unfair that he needs to have this conversation at all. He’s still watching his feet when he finally manages to speak out the words. “It’s a boy.”
His mother stops. James looks up at her and finds her smiling at him; the lines around her eyes looking right again. Before he can think of anything else to say, she hugs him. “I love you, James.”
A horde of emotion fills him, creeping up his chest and flooding his veins with every beat of his heart. Of course, she does. He never expected anything different, did he? His parents are the most progressive people he knows; neither of them would ever react badly to this. To any part of James.
Yet there is still a touch of relief in hearing it.
James loves his parents, and his parents love him. This is a truth that has lived inside James for as long as he can remember, fiery and undeniable. He knows he was just about the most wanted baby in history. Their miracle. It would be unfair of James to say this burdened him in any way because it never did. He just feels a little too inclined to make them proud, to be the son they spent so much time wishing for. It was never hard; he only needed to be himself. Everything about James has always aligned with that. However, a part of him, as small as it was, couldn’t help but worry that this might not, that his parents might resent him for it. For denying them the big, traditional wedding that would be splattered on the Daily Prophet, and the horde of grandbabies that would look like them.
He tries to chalk it up to Regulus’s pessimism rubbing off on him, but this relief tinges the moment with a hint of bittersweetness anyway. James should not have been relieved at all; he should have known better.
“I know, mum,” he says, holding her tight. “I love you, too.”
She lets him go, still smiling, only it grows playful now. When she speaks, her tone is almost mischievous. The same one she used to tease him about Lily. “Well, don’t just stand there! Tell me about him.”
broken pieces of the night, chapter 17
I love fics that explore internalised homophobia but I especially enjoy when James struggles with aspects of it because I've seen people say that he wouldn't struggle with it at all because he grew up in such an accepting and kind environment but I feel like it's so much more than that.
my parents have been taking me to pride marches every year since I was a baby and I have queer and trans family members and I haven't struggled with internalised homophobia but ive definitely dealt with aspects of it.
at the end of the day being queer is hard no matter what. coming to the realisation you're something you didn't think you were is difficult and living as a queer person is difficult.
I really enjoy fics where James struggles with his queerness because it wasn't something he ever considered for himself, basically all of his friends are queer in some way so he knows it's okay but being the only straight one was like part of his identity and coming to terms with the fact that he's not straight it hard for him.

Sirius POV
As we walk to the dungeon I can’t help but wonder what we did wrong. I know we’ve been talking to her less, but we never stopped loving her. I want to be mad at her for leaving us without a trace, but I can’t. My worry is stronger than my anger.
“Okay we’re here. Now what, Pads? We don’t know the password.” I hear Remus say behind me. Without responding I take a guess.
“Pureblood.” It opens. Predictable.
We walk in and no one is in the room beside Regulus.
“Where is she?” I ask him.
“Why do you care?”
“Just tell us where she is.”
“Surprised you noticed she was gone. You’ve seemed so wrapped up in Lily lately.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Every day for the past 2 and a half months she has come back to this house crying about how her boyfriends are falling in love with another girl. Lily Evans ring a bell?”
A pang hits my heart. I can’t believe we didn’t notice.
“It’s not like that. We promise. Please tell us where she is.” Remus says from behind me.
He hesitates. I understand. Regulus has seen how much we love her and even though me and his’ relationship is strained, he still cares for her as family.
“In her room. Her roommates just left to go get some food from the dining hall for her so be quick.”
I feel a gust of air pass me as James and Remus start for the girls dorms. I stay back for a second.
“Thank you.”
“Don’t hurt her again.”
I nod my head and go to catch up with James and Remus.
When we reached her door, we stood looking at each other for a few seconds before I knocked.
“Oh my gosh, you guys act like it’s not your room too.” She says from behind the door. There’s a bit of shuffling before she opens the door. A sharp inhale escapes her mouth while her eyes widen a bit. She wraps the loose sweater around her frame before shifting her eyes away from us.
“What are you guys doing here?” She says with a pointed tone while walking back to her bed.
James walks in first followed by me then Remus.
“Why did you take back your stuff?” James says lowly with a clear quiver in his voice.
“I don’t think Lily would have appreciated you guys still having your ex-girlfriend’s stuff.”
“Do you seriously think we’d choose Lily over the love of our life?” I say.
“After seeing you spend more time with her and less time with me? Yes.”
None of us say anything. Tension constantly filling the air. Remus begins to move towards her, but James gets there first.
“Please don’t leave us,” he starts. Arms wrapped around her shoulders, “Please. We love you so much. We’ll change.”
Her arms wrap around James’ waist and that’s when Remus and I joined the hug. It was like this for a few more moments before he parted due to the rise in heat from us being crowded together.
“Why have you guys been spending so much time with Lily if you’re not leaving me for her then?”
James POV
I reach for the ring inside of my robe, glad that I kept it there in the middle of all the madness. I look over at the guys and subtly nod my head.
“We told her that the most amazing girl had captured our hearts.” Remus starts.
“That we wanted to make a promise to her that we’d one day, legally, be together forever,” Sirius continues.
“So she helped us pick out the perfect ring for the perfect girl,” I finish off by sliding the ring on her finger.
“That is, if you’ll have us. I know we haven’t really been the best boyfriends, but please don’t give up on us just yet.” Remus says while holding her cheek in his hand.
More tears roll down her face, but a smile makes an appearance as well.
“Yeah, you guys are pretty shit.” She says which causes us to chuckle. She kisses each one of us before hugging us again.
“Now let us make it up to you,” Sirius says with a smirk.

I’m reworking my one MoD!Harry AU. Details below the cut.
Who did I draw in the pic?
Regulus (sharp cheekbone, curly hair that changes length)
Sirius (in the jacket with pins hehe)
Lily Luna (red hair)
Teddy (blue hair)
What is the AU now, FF^2?
*inhales deeply*
SO. Everything’s mostly canon (not cursed child compliant tho lmao), and Harry is officially Master of Death since he was the owner of all three hallows at the same time. This means, essentially, that he is now the personification/god of death.
Since Harry is Harry tho, he doesn’t want to live forever alone, and so his friends and family try to help him find a way to get out of it. There isn’t one. So he is, of course, resigned to living forever alone.
Except his friends decide “no, no thanks, we’re not letting you do this alone.” So when Harry dies and ‘ascends,’ his family and friends choose to ascend with him. He’s able to reach already dead souls using the stone, so Sirius also ends up making the choice to ascend too. The rest of the dead are content staying where they are.
(I have,,,, such a long list of who ascends and what they do and blah blah blah, but I’m not gonna get into it because it is….. so much. It’s truly just so much.)
The important thing is that the way this works is that the universe resets itself every so often, slightly different each time. And certain things carry through, like tales turning into mythos. Harry and his immortal (sometimes reincarnating) family, are the focus of several of these myths, including the harbingers of the apocalypse one.
So when his family meddles, it’s usually with those names, rather than their original ones. Which, when they interact with alternate incarnations of people they know, can cause some shenanigans.
What is actually depicted in your doodles?
Regulus,,,, listen he is my current blorbo and I just wanted to draw him, ok? The jegulus fandom got its teeth in me and now I’m thinking about Harry Potter stuff again. (Speaking of which! Fuck JKR.)
In this AU, he doesn’t ascend with everyone else, but instead ascends later during a whole thing that I will maybe actually write into a fic. Maybe.
Top left is just the first full body Regulus design I did. Dipping my toes in, you could say. Key things; he’s younger in this. Pre-ascension. He’s wearing slytherin’s locket for plot reasons.
Top middle is the Black brothers with their animagus forms behind them. And yes I made regulus’ a lion. Tbh I think he deserves it. He’s dangerous, lazy, proud, sneaky, and at the end he was really, really brave. I know lots of people make him a house cat, but like. If Sirius can have his star’s namesake as an animagus form, so can regulus.
Below that, we have Regulus saying “Potter?” While looking shocked. I won’t elaborate too much on this for plot reasons (in case I write the fic), BUT, this is the moment that he learns that Lily Luna is a Potter.
To the right of that is the brother hanging out and being cute and I love them. I just want them to reconcile and talk and be family again 😭. Also I want Sirius to have 100 little gay pins for his leather jacket. He deserves it.
Bottom left is Lily Luna and Regulus together. I this AU on particular, Regulus has a mentor/mentee and uncle adjacent relationship with her. They are cute, and I love them, and I won’t hear otherwise, sorry not sorry.
Bottom right is the only doodle I will give spoilers for. It’s post-ascension, where Regulus, Sirius, LilyLuna, and Teddy are all about to wreck some shit. The rest of the family jokingly calls them the “Grim Squad”, because all of them go out and hunt down wayward or death cheating souls. So if you see them, you’re their target, and will die. Just like the Grim thing.
Last words
This is a self indulgent au, and idk if I’ll write it, but maybe I’ll elaborate on it more here if anyone is actually interested. Either way, I’m just happy I had the motivation to draw this 😌

Have you ever seen where they get kids to ask the players tough questions and there all dress up and have fake beards and stuff. Maybe you could do that with Jules and Katie asking the team all these really hard questions?????
Thank you for giving me an excuse to spend an hour and a half watching adorable kids ask questions and melt the hearts of celebrities. You’re my hero. There are no fake beards here, but I hope you enjoy it anyway! Sweater Weather characters belong to the incredible @lumosinlove!
“These chairs are so small,” James said as he scooted closer to the table. He nearly knocked Talker over with his elbow as the four of them squeezed in; the two kids on the other side shared a look.
“Ready, everyone?” Dorcas asked. When she received six thumbs up, she turned to the camera with a cheerful smile. “Hello, Lions fans, and welcome to Lion Pride! We have a couple of very special guests today to do the introductions.”
“Hello! I’m Katie and I’m six!” She held up six fingers and all four hockey players melted a little bit.
“I’m Julian, and I’m ten.” He waved, a little shy.
Dorcas smiled. “And how are you two related to our favorite Lions?”
Katie lit up and pointed behind the camera. “That’s my dad!”
There was a chuckle in the background. “Can you tell them my name, mon chou?”
“Pascal Dumais, but everyone calls you Dumo.” She swung her legs and her tulle skirt fluffed out.
“Remus Lupin is my older brother,” Jules said with a grin. “But Finn thought he was my dad.”
“It was an honest mistake!” Finn protested around a laugh. “Cut me some slack, Little Loops!”
“Do you want to do the intros for the guys, too?” Dorcas asked. Katie tugged on Jules’ sleeve.
“Can I go first?” she whispered. When he nodded, she hopped out of her chair and ran to the other side of the table, tapping each player on the shoulder. “This is Pots, Talker, Harzy, and Sirius.”
“Aw, man, I didn’t get to do any of them,” Jules pouted.
“You can ask the first question,” Dorcas said, hiding her smile behind her clipboard. “A quick reminder for our Lions: if you refuse to answer any of these, it means you hate children. Take it away, Jules!”
“Okay.” He cleared his throat and looked across the table with a solemn expression. “How many sticks have each of you broken?”
“Oh, that’s a tough one,” James mused. “A lot, but not always on purpose.”
“I haven’t broken that many,” Talker said. “I’ve forgotten to return quite a few to the rink after games, though. I think I have about five in my trunk that I keep meaning to put back.”
“Maybe…ten? Fifteen?” Finn rested his chin on his hand. “I should start a tally board.”
“Too many,” Sirius laughed. “I need to be more careful.”
Katie wiggled in her seat as she picked up the question card. “Why do you swear so much?”
Matching expressions of shock painted all four players’ faces. “Have we sworn in front of you?” Finn asked in a small voice.
“Yeah.”
“Mon dieu, I’m the worst person on earth,” Sirius murmured as Talker leaned his forehead on the table.
James opened and closed his mouth a couple times before answering. “Uh. Well. I don’t know, Katie. Instead of answering, I’m going to take this time to personally apologize to you and your dad, who is laughing his a—his rear end off in the back, as well as promising to form better habits.”
“If you could be any superhero, who would it be?” Jules asked, seemingly unfazed by the previous question. Wordlessly, Sirius gestured to his Captain America t-shirt.
“Spiderman,” Finn said without hesitation. “He’s the coolest.”
James unzipped his jacket to reveal a Superman shirt. “We didn’t coordinate this,” he said, tilting his head toward Sirius. “But yeah, Superman’s the best.”
Talker thought for a moment. “I really like Hawkeye. Are we talking Marvel or DC here?”
“Anything.”
“Anything? Hmm. I’m going to go with the Flash, then.”
“Nice.” Jules reached over to give him a high-five.
“I got Jules’ approval, everyone else can go home.”
“What’s your greatest fear?” Katie asked, still swinging her legs.
The table went silent. Sirius turned to Dorcas. “Is this the plan? Get us rolling with fun stuff and then give the hard ones to the five-year-old in a princess dress?”
“Yeah, pretty much.”
“Cool. Well, munchkin, I don’t like bugs and I’m not a huge fan of the dark.”
“Vegetables,” Finn said sagely, which sent both kids into a fit of giggles and made all the adults break into sunny smiles. “God, you guys are cute.”
“Pomeranians freak me out,” Talker answered once they had calmed down a bit. “They have those tiny little eyes and sharp teeth.”
James shrugged. “I’m not a fan of heights.”
“I thought you wanted to be Superman?” Jules frowned. “He flies all the time.”
“I think I’d be less afraid of heights if I knew I could fly.”
“So you’re afraid of falling, not heights.”
James looked to the camera. “And now I’m getting psychoanalyzed by a ten-year-old. Uh, yeah buddy, I guess so.”
“Hmm.” Jules looked back to the question card. “Who would win in a fight, you or our moms?”
“Your moms,” Talker said immediately as the others nodded. “No contest.”
“How would we even get in that situation?” Sirius asked. “What the did we do to make the nicest women in the world that mad?”
“Stole brownies,” Katie said with great gravity for one so young. “Mom says you four are the worst about it.”
“Mom wouldn’t even have to fight you.” Jules cocked his head to the side. “I feel like she could just give you a disappointed look and that would be enough. Katie, your turn.”
“Yay!” She brightened again. “What is your favorite cereal?”
Sirius smiled. “Fruit Loops.”
“Cheerios,” Talker said. “They’re good for you physically and emotionally.”
“I’m with Talkie on this one,” James agreed.
Finn gave them all disappointed looks. “You’re so old. Mine’s Lucky Charms.”
“Okay, Leprechaun Boy,” James snorted. Finn reached over and smacked the back of his head. “Hey!”
“Do you ever play hockey at home?” Jules asked. “I feel like Sirius doesn’t have to answer this one since it’s so obvious.”
Finn laughed. “Does tapping a puck around on the carpet with brooms counts?”
“Yeah, that counts.”
“Then yeah, sometimes.”
“I have no space in my apartment to play hockey,” Talker said. “Though I plan on moving someday and then the answer will be yes.”
“I made a rink in my backyard.” James smiled slightly. “Lily likes to skate sometimes while I run drills.”
“My turn, my turn!” Katie scooted her chair closer. “Okay. Out of everyone on the team, what two people would you take with you on a dessert island?”
“Desert,” Jules corrected quietly.
“Desert island. Are there deserts on islands?”
“I think they mean like super sandy beaches with no people on them.”
“Oooooohhh.”
James mouthed a thank you to Dorcas, who gave him a thumbs-up in return. The other three looked at the kids with unbearable softness. “Well, I’d feel awful if I took your dad with me, so I think I’m going to go with Finn and maybe Kasey. We’d have a blast.”
“Nice, dude.” Finn fist-bumped him. “Unfortunately for you, my choices are going to be Leo and Logan, since I already know we could live together without starting a war on the third day.”
Sirius thought for a second. “I think Nado would actually be able to survive on a desert island, so I’ll bring him along, and for the second one…maybe Kasey? Yeah, Kasey’s cool.”
In the ensuing silence, Jules gave him a significant look. “Aren’t you forgetting someone?”
“You’re not on the t—” The realization hit him like a truck; his eyes went wide and he slumped in his seat as the others burst out laughing. “Oh no. Oh, no, no, no.”
“Your own fiancé.”
“Please don’t tell him.”
“He’s gonna laugh so hard,” Jules cackled, leaning back in his chair. Even the camera crew was losing it in the background. Dorcas had to step out of frame. “You’re never going to live it down.”
“Well, the first person I would bring with me is Remus Lupin, because he’s read a lot of books and definitely knows how to survive on a desert island,” Talker said around his snickering. “And then I’d bring Cap, because God knows that would get entertaining after Loops finds out about this. The sarcasm would be off the charts.”
“Okay, next question.” Dorcas came back into view, still grinning. “Jules, go for it.”
“Can I ask Katie’s question again so Sirius can give a better answer?” he asked gleefully. Dorcas hesitated, then shook her head. “Bummer. What was cool when you were young that isn’t cool now?”
“When?” Finn looked scandalized. “I’m 24!”
“Yeah, and?”
“Ugh. Um, maybe Furbies? People were really into Furbies when I was in high school, though I can’t say I’m sorry to see them go out of style.”
James bit his lip in thought. “Tamagotchis.”
“I loved those things!” Talker said excitedly. “My sisters and I used to go nuts with those things!”
Sirius smiled. “Lite Brites.”
Finn’s eyes went wide. “I forgot about those!”
“Regulus and I each had one and we loved them. That was the only thing we agreed on and we used to sit—” He paused for a second to laugh. “—we used to sit in the middle of the ice rink in the backyard, still in our skates and everything, and do Lite Brites for literal hours.”
“That’s so cute, oh my god.” Talker shook his head. “What a nostalgia trip.”
Katie knelt on her seat and rested her arms on the table. “Who skates faster, you or me?”
“You,” all four answered in unison.
Jules rolled his eyes, but he was clearly hiding a smile. “How many push ups can you do?”
“How many can you do?” James countered. A flash of competition lit on Jules’ face and all the guys grinned. “Uh-oh, there’s the Lupin glare.”
“How about we have a little competition?” Dorcas suggested. “See how many everyone can do in thirty seconds?”
“Absolutely,” Finn said. The four of them had a little bit of trouble getting their knees out from under the kid-sized table, but eventually they succeeded and gathered in the middle of the room. “Katie, are you joining us?”
She smiled innocently. “No, I know I’d win.”
“Get ready.” Dorcas pulled her phone out as they knelt. “On your marks, get set, go!”
The guys went easy on Jules from the outset, but they made it look like those pushups were the hardest exercise they had ever done in their lives. Talker took a second to dramatically wipe his forehead and James’ wheezing was almost comical; Jules, however, was giving it his best shot. When the timer finally went off, Finn collapsed with a groan. “I forfeit.”
“Did I win?” Jules panted, pushing his hair out of his eyes.
“You did, congratulations!” Dorcas put her timer away and winked at the camera as they headed back to the table. “Great job, everyone. Katie, your turn.”
“Do you live in a mansion?”
“I live in an apartment,” Finn said.
“Same.”
Sirius shook his head. “My house might be big, but it’s not a mansion.”
“Does a two-story house count as a mansion?” James asked. “No? Then no, I don’t.”
“Who is your least favorite person on the team and why?” Jules turned to Sirius with raised eyebrows. “Are we going to have another desert island problem?”
Sirius threw his hands in the air, speechless, as the other three cracked up. “Jules, can I adopt you?” James begged around his laughter. “Please?”
“You’ll have to fight my mom for that, I think.”
“My least favorite person on the team is James Potter,” Sirius sighed. “Not the person I’m getting married to.”
“We could get married. Lily might mind, though.”
“Full offense, but I know way too much about you to ever consider that.”
James ruffled his hair and turned back to the kids. “My least favorite person on the team is Remus Lupin, because he ran me over in practice the other day.”
Finn side-eyed him. “Didn’t you trip him after he stole the puck from you?”
“He ran me over.”
“Sure, Pots. Um, my least favorite is Kasey Winter. He threw ice at me while we were in the ice baths.”
“Logan took my Gatorade last week and hid it all over the rink,” Talker said. “I’ll never forgive him for such a crime.”
“Oh, I like this one!” Katie exclaimed as she looked at her card. “What’s the best birthday party you’ve ever had?”
“My tenth birthday was at Red Robin and I got a Power Ranger outfit.” Talker grinned. “I was the coolest kid on the block.”
“My eighteenth birthday was pretty fun,” Finn said. “There was a bouncy house and Alex almost broke it because we were jumping too hard.”
“Does it have to be my birthday?” James asked. “Because my son’s first birthday party was awesome.”
“Why?”
“He threw cake in Sirius’ face and a food fight broke out in the backyard.”
“That was a pretty great day,” Sirius agreed. “My last birthday party was my favorite.”
“You spent the night with us!” Katie said happily.
“I did, yeah,” he laughed. “And I had a really good time.”
Jules perked up when he read the next question. “I love this one! Do you have a lucky pair of underwear?”
“Yes.”
“Yeah, totally.”
“Of course I do.”
“Is there a superstition I don’t have?”
Jules looked especially pleased with those answers as Katie picked up her card. “This is the last one,” she warned. “And it’s super important and super hard. What kind of dog would you be and why? You can take your time, I don’t mind.”
“Thank you, Katie, we’ll need it,” Talker said as he desperately tried to contain his smile. “I’ll go first, if nobody minds. I would be a border collie because one, I love them; two, they have a lot of energy; and three, they love making friends.”
“That’s a good one,” she said seriously. “They’re also very soft.”
“Yes, they are.”
Once Finn managed to suppress his quiet laughter, he raised his hand. “Can I go next?” Katie nodded. “I’d be an Irish setter. They have red hair and they’re really affectionate. Plus, I met one the other day at the park and haven’t stopped thinking about him.”
“This was a tough question, Katie, but I think I’m going to go with a golden retriever,” James said after a moment. “They’re good family dogs and they like to be on the ice with those big ol’ paws.”
“That’s what I was going to say!” She beamed at him. “Sirius, you don’t have to go. I already know what you’d be.”
He raised his eyebrows, looking highly amused. “Do you now? Can everyone else know, too?”
“Well, it’s obvious,” she said. “You’d be Hattie. She looks just like you and she gives the best hugs.”
A small puff of air left Sirius’ lungs and he blinked as James reached over and patted his shoulder. “Oh. Okay.”
“That wraps us up,” Dorcas said, looking between them with a soft smile. “Any closing statements from our guest stars?”
“Ready?” Jules muttered to Katie, who nodded rapidly. “On three. One, two, three!”
“Go Lions!” they shouted in unison with matching grins. The camera crew cheered and the players applauded, all laughing.
“Thank you for tuning in, everyone! Remember to like and subscribe for more content.”

Chapter 2
Remus
It was calm outside, everyone still asleep except for him and Leo. The sun was rising and Remus parked the rental car in a good distance from the Black's mansion, but not too far so he can still watch who’s leaving and arriving.
He had picked up the car last night from a rental agency at the airport. He’d given them his fake I.D., no one needed to know who he really was, and it was much safer that way. He tried to be as unremarkable as possible: He wore blue jeans, a black sweater, no hat and no watch. He was polite but not too polite; he was forgotten right after the conversation. The only thing he persisted on was that his car was white.
White cars are the most common around, so he would be even more unrecognizable like that.
No one would pay attention to a random bloke driving a random white car. And that was his goal. No attention.
“And now?” Leo asked him.
Remus took a sip from his tea, trying to get rid of his tiredness with the caffeine.
“Now we wait for something to happen, for Sirius to appear. And then we’ll see.”
They sat in silence for a good while.
The street came to life slowly. The first people showing up, taking their dogs for a walk and buying breakfast at the close bakery. Some were already outside for a run.
Remus had never understood the urge of going for a run, let alone early in the morning. He did go for a run once in a while, to keep himself fit and healthy, but he wasn’t addicted to it like some people were. He did it because it was essential for his job to be in shape, not because he actually enjoyed it.
The Black’s mansion got busy shortly after.
“Okay, now just watch who’s leaving the house. Write it down: Who left the house when, who’s arriving when. Give a short description of what they look like, so we recognize them again. Write it down or memorize it.”
At 7:37am Orion and Walburga Black left their house. They sat down in the shiny, black car that was parked in the parking lot. The driver sitting inside was already waiting for at least 30 minutes.
They left, probably for some state business.
It took another hour until their target finally left the house: Sirius Black.
Remus sat up straighter, his eyes not leaving Sirius. He wore dark jeans and a white button down, no tie. His hair was longer now than the last time he’d seen him. It reached just past his shoulders. His face didn’t show any kind of emotion, it was set in stone.
He was followed by another guy in a suit with dark and messy hair, probably his bodyguard. They headed for a car.
Remus stretched his back a bit.
“Here we go.” he said and turned the engine on.
Finn
“Can you believe this? We’re going to eliminate a Black! A Black!” Logan said excitedly as they entered their flat.
Finn felt Logan's hands on his shoulder, then he was shaken gently.
“Regulus Black, Fish! Dumbledore trusts in our abilities so much that he gives us this job!”
Finn laughed. He looked into Logan’s perfect green eyes. His heartbeat quickened because of the touch and the proximity. He could kiss him,if he just moved a little more forward, but instead he took a deep breath and stepped away a little bit from his best friend.
“Okay, yeah Lo, I’m just as excited as you are about this, but calm down okay?” Finn said but couldn’t quite suppress his grin.
It was a big deal. No, not big. It was huge.
They had other jobs before, of course, but they’ve been smaller, not so important for all of them. Observing Umbridge, trying to find out what she was up to next, for example. Sure, it was important, but it didn’t have the same impact on the country as eliminating a black did.
“Who do you think has the older brother?” Logan asked and sat down on the couch in their living room.
There was a short silence, then:
“Lupin.” they said at once, not one ounce of uncertainty in their voices.
Finn sat down next to him.
“Okay, I’m going to make us coffee & then we’ll have a lot of work to do before we can actually start this.” he said, leaning back and looking at Logan’s profile.
He had a crush on him since… well, forever. Finn couldn’t quite remember a time he wasn’t longing for him. They lived together for two years now. It had made sense then: They were working a lot together, being a perfect team. They did spend every minute together, so why not save some money and share a flat? Finn hadn’t thought about the fact that this meant no Logan-free space anywhere, which wasn’t exactly helping him, considering the fact that he was in love with a boy he couldn’t have.
“Ouais. Okay.”
Finn got up and went into the kitchen to make coffee. He poured some milk into his cup and an incredibly unhealthy amount of sugar into Logan’s. How could he drink this stuff? It’s a crime to still call that coffee.
He went back into the living room, placed the cups on the table and sat down on the floor across from Logan, who’s still sitting on the couch.
“Thanks.” he said and reached for his cup, took a sip of his coffee and then they started working.
“I think this actually sounds like a good plan. He isn’t that close to his brother, is he?” Finn asked.
He stared at the paperwork in front of him. He was still sitting on the floor. They were working for a couple of hours now, collecting everything they knew, comparing it with what Dumbledore had given them and writing down everything they still needed to know and what they planned on doing.
Finn looked up as he didn’t get any answer from Logan, only to see that he’d fallen asleep on the couch. Finn had to smile at that sight, so the sugar and caffeine high finally had worn off.
He stood up, took the light blanket from the couch and covered Logan with it.
“Good night, Lo.” he whispered and brushed his hand gently through Logan’s brown curls.
Sirius
This day never ended, at least that’s what it felt like for Sirius. The business meetings lasted forever and there wasn’t any free time between the last meeting and the dinner.
All Sirius did now was rush home, change into something his mother might approve more than his choice of clothing this morning and say goodbye to James.
“Take care. Don’t do anything stupid.” James pleaded.
Sirius snorted.
“Yeah. Because I do stupid things on purpose.”
“You do. Sometimes.”
James hugged him quickly.
“I’ll be back tomorrow morning. See you.”
“Tell Lily and little Harry I said Hi.” Sirius called after James.
---
Sirius hated dinners like this. Actually, he hated every activity that included his family, but those business dinners were the worst. They talked endlessly over state issues, how to regulate this better, how to get the most out of that. Sirius really wasn’t interested in it, but he had to have an opinion on every topic as the heir and of course his opinion had to be the same as his parents’. If he had another opinion, his parents would make him change his mind, so he was better off lying; he told them what they wanted to hear, despite the fact it was against everything he believed in.
“Have you ever thought about giving them something back? Like a tax return? Or lowering the taxes in general?” Sirius said against better knowledge.
That simple statement earned him furious glances from his parents, confused looking guests and a kick in the shin from his brother.
He threw an angry look at Regulus, before looking back at his parents.
“You must be kidding, my dear son. Who would ever think of something like that?” his mother said sweetly, but Sirius didn’t miss the threat directed at him.
“Of course I am joking, mother. Of course I am.” he laughed in the most charming way, but he suddenly felt really sick inside.
---
An hour later he was back in his room. He tried to undo his tie with shaking hands and after several attempts it finally was off and he threw it in the corner of his room.
Why? Why was he the goddamn heir? He couldn’t do this! He wasn’t like them. He didn’t want to be like them!
Sirius moved his hand through his hair several times, a gesture he got used to doing when he was nervous and tense, which he was more often than not around his family.
There was a sharp knock on his door and Sirius froze mid-movement.
Oh no. This had to be his mother or his father, maybe both.
“Just a sec.” he said, his voice a little shaky.
He hated it, he couldn’t even control his damn voice, then how was he supposed to control a whole fucking country.
After he took several deep breaths, Sirius went to the door and opened it, preparing to brace himself against the angry faces of his parents, but it was Regulus he found outside his room. With a plate full of food.
“You ate almost nothing at dinner, thought you might be hungry.” he said and walked past Sirius, who let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
He closed the door behind him and followed Regulus to his bed. The both boys sat down and Sirius started eating. He hadn’t realized how hungry he was.
“Thanks, Reggie.”

All in the Family
Chapter 45: Grim Defeat
For once, Sirius' shock was so much he didn't even notice the change of scenery, including the sleets of icy water now poring down on him. He just stood there, quaking in one spot, gasping again and again, "I, I'm sorry, I-"
"Sirius!" James finally broke into his line of sight by shaking him, honestly it was a miracle he could see where he was going. His hazel eyes weren't even visible behind the rain smeared glasses, his unruly hair was plastered to his face. "Padfoot, come on mate! Let's get below the stands at least for some cover!"
When Sirius didn't respond, James grabbed his elbow and began physically pulling him along. Sirius stumbled and nearly fell down below, James twirled on the spot and caught him before he could. He kept his hands in place until he was sure Sirius wasn't going to fall over, than caught an even stronger grip on him. Sirius stalled him for only a moment, bending down and picking up what he'd slipped on, nearly lost in the pounding torrent, the purple book. James nodded in understanding, the two now galloping down and underneath the stands where Remus and Peter were waiting, bouncing uneasily on their toes and huddling close under their robes for whatever warmth they could.
"Pads, you okay?" Remus still had to speak a bit louder than normal to be heard, especially as thunder rolled not to far in the distance. "We saw you just standing up there for a whole minute."
"Yeah, we know you're sorry, alright," James clapped him on the shoulder, his face looked scrunched and almost painful between the chattering teeth and his eyes squinting to focus on anything. Sirius just blinked, he hadn't realized he'd still been saying it.
"Really mate, there's ah, there must be some logical explanation for this," Peter tried to reassure.
Sirius couldn't think of anything to say to that. He hadn't even bothered to shake his hair out of his face, it looked like a shaggy mess dripping down all around him.
"Oh, I spot Regulus!" Peter suddenly yelped as a distraction. He was nearly falling down the steps, eyes scanning for some way to slip beneath the bleachers. Peter darted out this time to snag him and tow him inside. He was ghastly pale and looked like a drowned victim, but at least his black eyes were alert.
"Thanks," he panted, taking in their surroundings. "This must be some kind of sick joke," he sighed, turning back to look just as a flash of lighting captured the sky. "We finally get put into the Quidditch stadium, and this madness is happening!"
"Guess we'll have to wait a little longer to get back in the air," James sighed in agreed disappointment.
"Seen the other three about?" Peter asked, trying not to poke his head too far out into the icy rain to scan for them.
"Yeah, opposite end of the field, they were ducking out of this just fine," Remus reassured, finally dragging his eyes away from Sirius, but going right back to eyeing him as he still said nothing.
"Sirius, you're scaring us," James finally whispered.
There was still water leaking down from overhead, steady drops dripping and plopping on exposed skin, trickling down their collars and leaving them just as shivering and miserable. The four of them kept swiping at themselves every few moments, shivering to try and keep themselves warm, bundled close to each other, except him.
"We can't pretend this isn't real anymore," he finally managed in a croaky, unfamiliar voice. They would all swear he'd been standing in that rain for years, his face gaunt, eyes focused on nothing. "I, I did something. I, I tried to-" he turned wretched eyes to his best friend. "Prongs, I'm sorry."
James could swear his breath was misting around him, but he didn't even notice as he returned as calmly as if this were still about the weather. "There's nothing to be sorry for Sirius. You haven't done anything, nor will you. Not while I'm here for you."
There was a spark, like a light suddenly got turned back on inside his gray lit eyes. Then he blinked and it was as if nothing had ever happened. It was as simple as that, he shared a smile with him and nodded, clutching the book with new life. "Right then, let's get out of this mess shall we?" He cracked the book open and began reading like it was any other, despite the black words smearing slightly, though his brows ruffled and a slightly unpleasant smile returned as he got out the chapter title.
"Grim Defeat? Blimey, must be Harry's first loss in this mess," Remus shivered, still sidled up as close to Sirius as he could, fighting the urge to stuff his hands in Sirius' pockets for warmth, they weren't doing him any good chasing away the goosebumps.
"If one person on that team gives him grief for it, I hope Harry pulverizes them," James scowled. "This will be a nightmare of a game."
"I hate Quidditch!" Even shouting at the top of her lungs, Lily was barely heard in the sharp sounds of the pattering water. She pushed her sopping wet hair out of her face, which looked nearly black hanging around her.
"Normally I'd like to say otherwise," Alice tried to say between chattering teeth, wrapped in Frank's arms and still shivering as hard as anyone. "On this particular occasion though, I feel compelled to comply."
"Still wanting to try out for the team next year love?" He managed to ask in her ear.
"Let me get back to you on that," she managed a genuine laugh. Lily couldn't help but smile at the two, the temperature just a few degrees warmer she was sure just for the air between them.
The three heard quite clearly the school being corralled into the Great Hall while a search for Black went down.
"Did you see his face?" Alice knew it was pointless to whisper in this downpour, but she couldn't help it. She had to clear her throat twice before trying again in a more stable voice. "Just before we got sent here, when he realized it was him who'd done it."
Frank and Lily both had stoic expressions, but she swore she saw the unease plain in their eyes.
"I think we're being too harsh on him," Alice insisted, trying to bring their hesitation further out. "He hasn't done this yet, and this future's clearly getting to him."
"I just don't know Alice," Frank sighed, brushing her dark hair away from her face repeatedly in the gale winds. "I can't feel safe in a room with him now because of all this, I can't get it out of my head. I'll take this," he needlessly gestured to the ink black sky and another roll of thunder crashing in, nearly shaking them out of their boots, "than be stuck in an enclosed space with no way out."
"It would help if he'd show a little remorse," Lily sniffed, purposefully this time, as she kept sniffling just to make sure her nose was still attached instead of frozen on the ground. "Instead, he just gets this look on his face, like he's daring us to tell him to do it or something."
"We've hardly been around him since we found out, and I still remember his face when we first heard," Alice tried to insist. "Come on Lily, I know you've got bad blood for him and his lot, but-" she broke off as a fork of lightning looked as if it was going to tear the sky in half, and she shivered harder than ever for the bone deep cold around them all.
For the whole of Sirius running through the kids discussion of the events, Sirius felt almost normal about it all. Yeah, this would be exactly what he and his friends would be doing during that time, making up wild theories! He effectively pushed this bizarre behavior of some future of his as far away as he could for now. It's not as if he'd done anything...surely his friends were still right and there was a huge misunderstanding...well until then, he had Quidditch to focus on!
Wood was being a maniac about the whole thing, which was entirely understandable. Sirius looked up and around to mock James for this, he just knew his best mate was going to be just as bad when he made captain!
Then he spotted Peter and Regulus, pacing back and forth to keep warm and chatting quietly, snickering even.
He put up with it as long as he could, but then his frustration boiled over when they found out Moony was skipping one of his lessons, and Snape was taking over! He snapped the book shut and decided he needed a break, leaving James and Remus to mutter quietly to each other with worry as he stormed over to the pair for a distraction.
"So what are you two on about? Regulus, if you're trying to sweet talk Peter into giving away our Quidditch secrets, it's going to take a lot more sweets than this," he smirked.
Regulus gave him a look of pure disdain and marched off, Sirius swore he even stomped in a few puddles as he went around a bend and vanished into the gloom.
Sirius stood there for several moments, glaring after him. That hadn't exactly been his goal, though he should be happy, now they could worry about what Snape was doing in private. He couldn't help it though, he turned to Peter with a look of absolute bafflement. "How do you keep-" he waved vaguely to where his friend and his kid brother had been laughing of all things. He couldn't ever remember making Regulus laugh, and he was the funniest person that little shit knew.
"Sirius, you've been ignoring him long before all this started, it's not my fault I'm actually enjoying making someone laugh." Sirius opened his mouth to protest, but Peter cut to the throat and said what he knew was really bothering him, "it's not as if you've been the best influence. I figured I'd try while I could to show him not all Gryffindors are terrible."
"You're being a terrible mate right now!"
"For, telling the truth?"
"Yes, no, wait...dammit Peter, just say something to make me feel better or I'll go find James or Remus."
Peter shook his head in disbelief at his dense friend as he spelled it out for him while keeping an eye on where Regulus had vanished. "Try being nice to him."
"I did," Sirius protested.
"Yeah, sporadically! Great job there Pads," Peter rolled his eyes. "You just insulted his Quidditch ability, like you two are on good terms, which you're clearly not. I know you were joking," he quickly tacked in for the flush of color managing to come in to his frozen face, "but I'm honestly not sure he did. You could have followed him just now and we would have joined you. You could have congratulated him on helping me prank you instead of continuing to ignore him. You've had an abundant opportunities and you still seem far more invested hanging around Moony now you've got him back than bothering to try connecting with your brother."
Sirius toed the weeping ground without looking at him now, stuffing his hands in his pockets and amazingly not having a response for that.
"Why do you suddenly care anyways?" Peter asked with surprise, in all the years he'd known Sirius, he hadn't even mentioned he'd had a brother until the day he was sorted. Sirius hated talking about anyone who shared his last name, so this sudden interest in him was quite odd.
"I, he," Sirius blustered for a moment. "At least before when I could ignore him in a whole castle I could pretend I didn't know what he was turning into, now it's in my face! I, I mean, it won't kill me to try and fix him while I've got the chance."
"Fix him?" Peter demanded. "Well you aren't starting off well mate, thinking you can turn him into you. What do you even want from him? If he never laughs at a word you don't like again, will you go back to ignoring him?"
Sirius opened, then closed his mouth again without response.
Peter just nodded, his point made, and sauntered over to the tense conversation between the last two Marauders.
"-but he might!" Remus' voice sounded like the shriek of the wind, his dark green eyes wild with panic. "Who's to say Dumbledore didn't tell all the staff! Merlin, we already know he knows thanks to Sirius-" Who winced and muttered another apology for that recent slip, but for the first time since it happened, that wasn't what Remus was focused on. "I can't believe I even got this job, he's probably told the whole world by now!"
"Relax Moony," Sirius threw his arm around Remus at once, letting his hand rest protectively on his neck. "Doesn't matter what Snape does for an hour in your class," he emphasized the last two words. "Those kids love you, Harry's made that clear, and they're a bunch of teenagers who already hate Snape. No matter how many snide comments he makes, no one's going to think twice about it."
"Yeah mate, just got to treat it like another day, except instead of sitting in the back with us, you're teaching the class," Peter said eagerly. "Brush it off, laugh, pretend you have no idea what's going on, or all of the above."
"Dumbledore didn't spill your secret now, he's not going to do it then," James agreed at once, picking up his earlier point. "If some like McGonagall still know, than those are the only people who will know! Not that it matters," he finished with a hard smile. The protective flare for both of his friends, simmering just below the surface constantly lately for how attacked they felt, was reaching its boiling point.
Remus swallowed uncomfortably still, but finally nodded. There was nothing for it, they had to get through this to get out of this blasted weather. Sirius had to release him and put both hands back on the book, and he instantly missed the warmth, his confidence wavering again at once. He swore he could still hear the echoes of the screams from his youth playing on a loop in his head, his father shouting, his mother screaming, the pain from that bite the most vivid, all because Snape had to fill in his role as teacher for the day.
At first Sirius seemed to be right though, despite his snide comments, none of it was particularly new to any of them. They seemed to get through half the class with just his crude critiques before he declared today's lesson. The four of them went very still, hatred for what that slimeball was doing leaving them breathless.
"Come on Lily, you've got to admit it's kind of harsh," Frank insisted to her defense. "He is skipping around a lesson plan I have confidence Lupin would have set up."
"So he's pushing them a bit, some like Hermione have surely studied ahead. I'm sure he, ah, does it in his own class all the time," she crossed her arms and hopped in place, though this did nothing to help either her understanding of more brutal tactics by him or the still declining temperature.
"I don't particularly care for his teaching methods to be put in other classes," Alice returned coldly, words even icier than the little icicles hanging beneath the stands now.
Lily grimaced and muttered a soft apology as she remembered all that had been done to Neville, then she blinked back tears and repeated herself in a stronger voice. "I am, so incredibly sorry for him, for how awful he is to your son-"
"You haven't done anything," Frank politely cut across her. "You've been apologizing for him for the past year Evans, if not longer, how long are you going to keep doing it?"
Lily brushed across her face, trying to make it look like she was batting more hair away than the hot tears before they froze in place. She had no answer for him, though she needed one, soon. If she didn't get some sort of explanation for Sev's behavior through this, she didn't know what she was going to do.
"I can't just, judge him because of this future!" She pleaded with them to understand. "He's still my friend in that castle!"
"Yet you seem to find it inevitable this is Black's future," Alice said pointedly.
Lily deflated and shuffled back from them a few feet, the flash of shame at her own hypocrisy finally causing her to give in to the sob bursting from her throat.
Regulus listened to the story progress alone now, mostly tuning out the petty drama Snape was causing in the class, but suddenly very interested in Ron sticking up for Hermione. It wasn't an unheard of thing, Slytherin's had to stick up for each other all the time against the rest of the school it seemed, they all had to band tightly together or be picked off. The difference was, these were Gryffindors, who had plenty of options.
Honestly, Harry's friends baffled him, they had plenty of opportunities to go be friends with others and Harry seemed their only unity. Yet here the pureblood was, sticking up for that know it all Muggleborn despite constantly berating her everywhere else. He would have liked to put it down to the Weasley's and their blood traitor status just wanting to make some ghastly scene like he'd been taught, but there seemed no motive. Ron in fact got a detention for his little show and didn't even seem angry at Hermione for it. He suddenly wondered if he was missing something between Harry's friends.
They finally got to the pumped up Quidditch match, and Sirius put as much enthusiasm into his voice as he could while reading of this. It didn't much work at first, Harry wasn't having much luck in this game. Thankfully Hermione stepped in and gave them all some interesting insight into a new spell, James's face looked positively gleeful at the idea.
"Prongs, hold off on trying that please!" Peter suddenly said, snatching his wrist as he began twirling his wand in his face. "Remember the last time you tried a spell that you'd just heard of? It took Madam Pomfrey three hours to get your face to flip back right side up."
"Oh, fine," he pouted, finally taking his glasses off and tucking them inside his robes. "They weren't doing me any good anyways," he grumbled. "I'm demanding your robes to clean them off with though in the next place."
"Fair enough," Peter looked highly pleased with himself for getting Prongs to listen and continued with, "hell, I'll give you my whole shirt."
The other three all laughed at him, but then stopped quickly in surprise at another, possible, Sirius sighting.
Of course, they had no proof this black dog being up in the stands watching Harry play Quidditch was Sirius, it could just be another figment of Harry's mind what with that Grim Trelawney told him about being on his mind, but the odds! All four of them were convinced Sirius was indeed hanging around this castle for something...and hanging around to watch Harry play Quidditch was frankly the best option available.
They dared not breathe a word of this, already on tenterhooks about Moony's secret so recently being brought up, their own didn't need anymore whispers. It didn't stop them from sharing smiles with each other as Sirius casually kept going now, feeling absolutely elated at this mention of him.
That was ruined, of course, not a few moments later by the arrival of dementors. Not just one, of course not, it seemed every foul creature that was supposedly guarding this school was suddenly in attendance far above, and the four of them shrunk into each other protectively.
"Why, why haven't they arrived yet," Peter hissed, fighting back the urge to poke his head through the stands and check to make sure they weren't hovering right above them now.
"I, I think they are," Remus stuttered, abandoning any pretenses and finally burying his face into Sirius' shoulder. "I, I've been hearing screaming, in, in my head for awhile now. I, thought it was just," he swallowed painfully, "but apparently, th-they, they're up-"
"Up in the air, where Harry would be after the Snitch," James finished in a diminished voice, hands trembling anyways.
"A good fifty feet away, yeah, let's keep it that way," Peter moaned, the effects of those monsters still lingering on them all the way down here.
Sirius adjusted himself comfortably so Moony didn't have to move, but felt like a detached soul himself as he tried to finish as fast as possible. Whatever magic was keeping them away from those below the stands may not last after all...and things only got worse as they were forced to hear Harry's experience, yet again.
Lily's knees buckled as it all sank in around her, a cascade of water went up around as she lost her fight and sunk to the flooding ground right along with Harry.
"Lily, oh you poor thing," Alice crooned softly, tearing out of Frank's arms and wrapping herself tight around the other girl. The two clung to each other, Lily even sank into the embrace for a moment as she couldn't fight this feeling of isolation anymore, not alone. A stronger pair of arms was suddenly on her other side, and it took her a moment to realize it was Frank. For just a moment, she'd half expected Potter, to pop up in her life like he always did when she least expected it.
They weren't even halfway through this chapter in Harry's life yet, and somehow it all kept growing worse as Harry woke up in the hospital wing and was told the news of what they'd all grasped. Now his broom was gone as well, and as Sirius finished, none of them could imagine how it could get worse than this.

Chapter Twelve
Christmas had always been an excellent time of year for Sirius, even when he had lived with his mum and brother in London because he’d always stay at Hogwarts. At Christmastime he was indescribably happy because he got to spend two whole interrupted weeks at his favourite place with his favourite people. It was also a good excuse to pull pranks – even Minnie didn’t get too angry at Christmas – and stuff himself full of food. There was an old saying that he lived by, ‘the calories don’t count at Christmas.’
However, this year he couldn’t wait for Christmas to be over, he and Y/N had had a tradition of bewitching snowballs to taunt Remus until he stopped being so sensible and joined in the fun. There was none of that this year, there was none of Y/N’s musical laughter or her teasing jokes and it caused his heart to constrict painfully.
Y/N hadn’t even spoken one word to him since the Yule Ball but every time she looked his way it seemed like she was close to bursting into tears. What hurt Sirius the most was the fact that she hadn’t even tried to speak to him, not since their argument. It was like his feelings were just all some game to her, but two could play at that game. She’d got everything she wanted and Sirius had lost her, all in a mere matter of days.
What made things worse was the fact that Regulus could now be seen strolling down the corridors with a huge grin on his face, he looked to be on top of the world. It made Sirius want to hex him.
It was the day before New Year’s Eve and he was out walking in the snow with his friends beneath the watery winter sunlight. The crisp winter afternoon was alive with the sounds of people screaming and laughing as they played in the powdery snow. Sirius glanced up with a sigh as he watched Y/N having fun with Remus and Peter. He felt a gloved hand on his arm and he turned to see that Lily was smiling at him sadly; her eyes almost had a mothering look to them.
“It will all work itself out, she misses you too even if she won’t say it, I know that she does. Regardless, you seem like you’re doing better.”
Sirius smiled at her, he appreciated her words but if Y/N really did miss him then he’d rather hear it from her, “thanks Lils, I’m doing alright. I just don’t want to cause any tensions between us, it’s pretty difficult being in the same friendship group,” he smiled and it started to snow lightly.
James slapped Sirius’ shoulder affectionately, shaking his head, “it’ll be fine mate, seriously. And hey, your bet with Y/N expires tomorrow at midnight. Soon you’ll be able to get your mind off her. I’m proud of you mate! I didn’t know that you had it in you.”
Sirius chuckled and kicked James in the shin, “hey, I’ve got as much self-control as the next person, don’t underestimate me.”
As they walked towards the iced gingerbread house that was Hagrid’s hut, Sirius felt someone gently brush past his shoulder. It was a gentle brush but Sirius could tell that it was intentional, it was no accident. He turned his head to have a go at whoever had bumped into him – his temper was running short these days – but he remained silent when he saw who it was.
He felt his eyes sting and grow watery as he realised it was his little brother. Regulus had a genuine dimpled smile on his face as he strode across the sparkling damp lawn towards the frosted pumpkin patch where Y/N was talking to Remus and Peter. His blood boiled as Regulus dipped his head and kissed Y/N’s cheek. Sirius turned away so he didn’t catch the strained smile on Y/N’s face.
Sirius’ mind was reeling as he felt his heart harden, “I’ll see you guys later, okay?”
“Where are you going?” James called after him; Sirius merely threw out a wave at his friends as he strode up the hill.
He searched everywhere before he found Freya – the girl he’d taken to the Yule Ball – in the paved Slytherin courtyard, “oi, Barnes!” he called over and when she glanced up at him she smirked and her friends simpered as he grew closer.
“What do you want?” she licked her bottom lip as she glanced up at him from beneath her long eyelashes.
He shot her a smirk as he slung an arm around her shoulder and he whispered into her ear, “meet me in the boathouse at 7am sharp tomorrow morning. Don’t be late and don’t wear any underwear, it will only get in the way.”
“To be honest, I didn’t think that you’d talk to me again after the Yule Ball but of course I’ll meet you handsome,” she purred, catching his lower lip beneath her teeth, “see you tomorrow baby.” Sirius pressed a kiss to her cheek, winked at her before striding back into the warmth of the castle.
In the morning he was probably the first one to wake up – he had to time his plan correctly or it wouldn’t work – and for a split second he wondered why he was awake. Then, he remembered and a sly smile spread across his face, he didn’t have any second thoughts about what he was about to do. He could be really cruel when he wanted to be, though it was a defence mechanism but he’d never admit it.
Quickly and quietly he got dressed and crept through the portrait hole. On the way down to the boathouse he narrowly avoided Peeves the poltergeist who was dropping inkwells on the heads of unsuspecting students. He cackled manically at Sirius before he floated away to cause even more mischief. When Sirius arrived at the boathouse, Freya was already waiting for him inside. She smiled somewhat shyly when he approached her and looked her up and down; it was true that she was very pretty. Sirius almost felt bad for using her.
“Someone’s very punctual,” he laughed and kissed her cheek, Freya giggled and tugged at the ends of his hair, the feeling made shivers run down his spine.
“Well, if Sirius Black asks to meet you him at the crack of dawn then you’d better not be late,” she flushed as she chewed her bottom lip, “now, why don’t you show me why you asked me here?” she winked.
Sirius smirked as he backed her against the cold stone wall and he dipped his head to kiss her lips, his hands going on either side of her head. She smiled against his lips, winding her arms around his neck, digging her fingers into his hair; she seemed to be into what Sirius wanted to do. About ten minutes later they were in the throes of passion right against the wall of the boathouse, Freya’s legs were tightly wrapped around his waist, her hands against his chest. Freya had wanted to skip the foreplay which had disappointed Sirius. Foreplay was one of his favourite things about sex.
He was keeping one eye on the time – Freya didn’t seem to realise that he was distracted by anything – there was only a couple of minutes to go. Like clockwork, a couple of minutes later Sirius’ ears pricked up as he heard footsteps halt behind him and he smirked, “Sirius?” she sniffled, her voice breaking as she said his name.
Sirius turned his head to look at her, Y/N had tears streaming down her cheeks like torrents of rain and her bottom lip trembled uncontrollably. He couldn’t understand how she still looked so beautiful when she cried, “how could you do this to me?”
Sirius pulled himself off of Bethany and put her down – ignoring her sounds of annoyance – and he crossed his arms, narrowing his eyes at Y/N, feeling triumphant, “what makes you think that this is about you?”
Y/N wiped her tears on the sleeve of her jumper and looked away from him, “you know that I come walking through here every morning at the same time. This is our place, Sirius.”
“Not anymore,” he hissed, not caring if his words hurt her.
Y/N looked like she was about to burst into fresh tears but instead she gave him a very angry look, “you know what?! I knew it, people like you can never change can you?” she threw her hands up, “that’s why you’ll always be alone! No wonder people prefer Regulus over you. It’s no wonder that I prefer him over you, I always have! He’s everything that you’re not.”
Her words caused a painful pang in his chest as he winced, he didn’t want her words to affect him this much, and she sounded so much like his mother. A look of satisfaction crossed her face, she knew that she had hurt him. She turned away from him and marched right out of the boathouse.
Freya spoke up which caused Sirius to jump, he’d forgotten that she was there, “I don’t like being used Sirius.”
-----------------------------------------------
Ever since you had found Sirius having sex with that Slytherin girl in the boathouse – in the place you had once shared with Sirius – you wouldn’t even look at him or talk to him. It hurt that he was still so happy and you couldn’t be a part of it anymore. You weren’t going to give him the power to ruin your life. Not again. You had been spending more time with Regulus and you had sincerely enjoyed spending time with him. He would never hurt you the way Sirius had.
When classes started up again, Sirius came strolling into The Great Hall, looking extremely handsome, he had a massive smirk on his face like he’d just conquered the world. You noticed that instead of wearing his usual Gryffindor tie, he was wearing a Hufflepuff one instead.
“You’re wearing a Hufflepuff tie,” Peter pointed out the obvious as Sirius sat as far away from you as he could get.
Sirius smirked at Peter, “oh do I? We got dressed again in the dark,” he smirked, looking over at the Hufflepuff table. The girls all giggled and simpered as he looked over; one girl who was wearing his tie sent him a wave.
“Excuse me, I need to go and vomit,” you spoke through gritted teeth as you simply got up and walked out of The Great Hall. You didn’t bother looking back, though if you had you would have seen the longing look that Sirius gave you.
When you walked into the common room you noticed Remus – he hadn’t been at dinner – looking very nervous, he was bouncing his leg up and down, a sure tell for when he was nervous. All thoughts of Sirius left your mind, you had to make sure that your best friend was okay, “Remus, are you alright?”
He glanced up at you, his hazel eyes wide, “I’m fine,” he hesitated before blurting it all out, “I’m seeing someone, I’ve had my first time,” he blushed.
Wow, he’d certainly kept that quiet, you had no idea that he’d been seeing someone, “I had no idea,” you blushed as you fiddled with your fingers, “so, who is it?”
“Morgana,” he chewed his lip as you raised an eyebrow, she wasn’t a very nice person. Remus was way too good for her, “I know that you don’t like her but she’s nice once you get to know her properly. We’ve been seeing each other since November.”
“So,” you sat down next to him, resting a hand on his forearm, “what’s the problem? I’d like to help if I can.”
He let out a shaky breath and he smiled gratefully at you, “thanks Y/N. I thought that I’d be content with merely sleeping with her but the more time I spend with her then the more I want to ask her out.”
“So, why don’t you? What are you so afraid of? You should tell her, in case things go wrong between you, like they have for Sirius and I,” you chewed your lip. You wanted him to be happy, he deserved to be happy.
Remus kissed the side of your head and wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer to him, “it’s the usual reason why I never tell people my feelings,” he sighed, “it’s the whole werewolf thing, I know I sound like a broken record but I don’t want to lump that on anyone. Nobody deserves it. And besides, I’m just not good enough for her.”
“Remus!” you frowned as you scolded him, “she’s the one who doesn’t deserve you! Don’t you ever say that about yourself, don’t you say that you’re not good enough. Because you are Remus, you’re so good, don’t ever forget that! Being a werewolf does not define who you are. I can help you if you want, I can help you talk to her?”
“You’ll help me? Really, you will?” he asked, his hazel eyes bright and hopeful as a slow smile slid onto his face.
“Of course Remus, I’ll always help you. You’re my friend,” you grinned at him as you kissed his cheek. Helping Remus would surely take your mind off things and he deserved to be with the girl he wanted.
