"When it comes to romance tropes, black cat/golden retriever is one of the greats. The black cat in the relationship is aloof and standoffish while the proverbial golden retriever is friendly and approachable, the setup for a perfect opposites-attract pairing.
Similar to a grumpy/sunshine pairing, black cat/golden retriever best describes the characters’ initial dynamic and outward persona. When black cat/golden retriever romances are written well, characters become more complicated beyond those first impressions. Over the course of the romance, characters discover how their unique dynamic makes them both better. A good black cat/golden retriever pairing gives characters permission to be complicated, to work against their public persona and become more fully realized in the eyes of the person who loves them."

The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish
Tumblr media
Love is the real magic ... Last month, Alex Barrow’s whole life imploded—partner, home, job, all gone in forty-eight hours. But sometimes when everything falls apart, better things appear almost like magic. Now, he’s back in his Michigan hometown, finally opening the bakery he’s always dreamed of. But the pleasure of opening day is nothing compared to the lonely and beautiful man who bewitches Alex before he even orders. Corbin Wale is a weirdo. At least, that’s what he’s heard his whole life. He knows he’s often in a fantasy world, but the things he feels are very real. And so is the reason why he can never, ever be with Alex Barrow. Even if Alex is everything he’s always fantasized about. Even if maybe, just maybe, Corbin is Alex’s fantasy too. When Corbin begins working at the bakery, he and Alex can’t deny their connection any longer. As the holiday season works its magic, Alex yearns for the man who seems out of reach. But to be with Alex, Corbin will have to challenge every truth he’s ever known. If his holiday risk pays off, two men from different worlds will get the love they’ve always longed for. The Remaking of Corbin Wale is a magical holiday romance that is my M/M romance take on Practical Magic.

"Corbin’s whole body shuddered at the memory. That kiss . . . that kiss had remade him. Dragged him to the blackest sky and the brightest stars and exploded him into something he had never known. Alex’s mouth and Alex’s hands and Alex’s body, yes, but mostly Alex. Alex wanting him, Alex needing him, Alex with him."

M/M Books part 3
More books with happy endings!
Galaxies and Oceans by N.R. Walker
Heartbreaking book about loneliness, learning to trust and accepting help. I don't remember much about this, it's been a couple of years since I last read this but I remember adoring this. I did give it 5 stars! Spicy.
Dear (Future) Husband by P.M. Laine
If you like isekai, wuxia, danmei and awkward bumbling while trying to woo your favorite character, this is perfect book for you! Support an independent author who is also my friend! Little spicy!
Better Than People by Roan Parrish
Roan Parrish is one of those authors who rarely disappoints. This is a read about overcoming anxiety, loneliness and getting dogs. Absolutely heart warming. Spicy.
Haven Heart -series by Davidson King Hug It Out / A Dangerous Dance
Okay. Hear me out. I know these are cheesy AS HELL and take that protective bad boy with a heart of gold and runs with it. Maybe too far. BUT. Over all, it is a solid series if you want crime bosses and mob vibes (I have read books 1-7). The second and third book are best in the series BY FAR.
Hug It Out is grumpy/sunshine romance where other one doesn't want to be hugged while other does that literally for living. A Dangerous Dance on the other hand is rivals/enemies to lovers scenario with two hard headed bad boys. Smutty smutty!
London Calling -series by Alexis Hall Boyfriend Material
I love a good fake relationship, especially when we are flipping off some tropes! Unexpected, funny, adorable and the second book is just as strong. Alexis Hall also rarely disappoints. A bit spicy.
The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish
It's been years since I read this but I do remember loving it. Corbin is autism coded, in a good way (as someone who is non-autistic) and the challenges of dating are done so well.
The Murderbot Diaries -series by Martha Wells
Okay this is not M/M romance by any means. But there are queer characters in the background. I just can not NOT recommend this. Murderbot is so relatable and funny and I love them and A.R.T.!
Part 1 / Part 2 / Part 3 / Part 4

Hello! I've recently read The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish and can't get it out of my head :) do you maybe know of other books with queer autistic protagonist that center specifically around the isolation these can bring?
I’d probably try Failure to Communicate by Kaia Sonderby and Late Bloomer by Mazey Eddings to start with, and maybe Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White, and if you feel like browsing more, you can find a bunch of queer autistic protags here: https://lgbtqreads.com/representation/disability-neurodivergence/

Alright this is what I’ve got off my read and to-read lists (books I haven’t read but have heard GOOD things about are here with a * disclaimer). I feel like I’ll probably be doubling up with other comments, so just count these as a bonus vote!
Paranormal:
Pack of Lies by Charlie Adhara (US)
One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston (US)
The Remaking of Corbin Wale (US)*
Historical F/F:
All the Painted Stars by Emma Denny (not sure of location)
Neon Roses by Rachel Dawson (Welsh)
The Covert Captain: Or, A Marriage of Equals by Jeannelle M. Ferreira (not sure of location)
Contemporary M/M:
A Dash of Salt and Pepper by Kosoko Jackson (US)*
I’m So (Not) Over You by Kosoko Jackson (US)*
Meet Cute Club by Jack Harbon (US)*
Something Wild & Wonderful by Anita Kelly (US)*
Trans Romances:
Unmasked by the Marquess by Cat Sebastian (US)
Drag Me Up by RM Virtues (US) (caveat in recommending this that I don’t love it as a myth retelling but it’s a great romance if you pretend it has no relation to the myths)
A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall (UK)
Documenting Light by EE Ottoman (US)
The Companion by EE Ottoman (US)
An Unsuitable Heir by KJ Charles (UK)
The Calyx Charm by May Peterson (US)*
Good luck with the studying and putting this all together!
Hello lovely people, I come before you humbly requesting recommendations for very specific flavours of romance novels! I don't much care about trad/indie/self-pub, but I am equally humbly requesting that self-pub recs should be of similar quality standards re: grammar and punctuation as trad books, I know this makes me a snob but in this particular instance I really don't care.
I am particularly looking for:
paranormal romance featuring m/m or f/f protagonists
historical romance with f/f protagonists that is not Olivia Waite
contemporary romance with m/m protagonists, bonus points if it's in a specific subgenre of contemporary like sports romance
Some stipulations:
published after 2010
preferably written by an American author for reasons of My Degree Is In American Studies, but PLEASE recommend me BIPOC authors if you can!
currently in print or available electronically
needs to be an actual romance novel, which means the romance is the main plot and there's a Happily Ever After
high heat level is fine but should not be crossing the line into erotica, that's just not what I'm looking for in this context
for bonus points, I'd also love to discover some non-contemporary romances with trans protagonists, the funkier the better!
I am trying to fill in some gaps in the corpus of novels I am assembling for academic purposes, which is where these very specific descriptions come from, and I don't trust Goodreads review scores at all, so I come to you, lovely tumblrites, instead.
Thank you all, I am looking forward to your suggestions!

Under Review
A list of authors and books currently under review. Anything under review has been submitted but may contain controversial representation, or have problematic association and/or controversy surrounding it. Items on this list are removed but not immediately banned from the Archive and may be added back on in the future.
Authors:
Books:
Just Ask!- Sonia Sotomayor Initially, the representation in this book looked phenomenal. However, several reviewers pointed out the author's association with Autism Speaks in writing it. Also, apparently the phrase "differently abled" is used in favour of "disabled" or "disability", neither of which appear to be mentioned at all.
Lirael- Garth Nix I was told the main character had depression but I'm having some difficulty verifying that.
Lycanthropy and Other Chronic Illnesses- Kristen O'Neal I had a couple of people suggest this one but, after looking into it, there's quite a bit of controversy surrounding the author being a white woman writing a POC character. Apparently, it was declared an "own voices" work?
The Remaking of Corbin Wale- Parrish, Roan Supposedly, one of the MCs in this story is autistic. It's never actually confirmed in the narrative whether he is or is not. A lot of people seem to agree that Parrish was implying that he is, but there's too much confusion and ambiguity surrounding the nature of his potential neurodivergence to ignore.
Roll with It- Jamie Sumner A book about a young girl with cerebral palsy, who uses a wheelchair and wants to be a professional baker. The writer of this book is the parent of a child with cerebral palsy. There are too many concerns in the reviews regarding possible ableism to warrant putting it in the archive at this time.
The Spare Man- Kowal, Mary Robinette A rich heiress is on her honeymoon in space and ends up trying to solve a murder. She has chronic pain and PTSD, as well as a service dog. Unfortunately, there are several comments relating to the "improper use" of the service dog in the novel.
Sizzle Reel- Greenwald, Carlyn I can't exactly remember why I put this on the review list. I think it was due to a lack of information regarding the anxiety representation.
The Sky is Blue with a Single Cloud- Tsuirta, Kuniko Further research needed. The author lived with lupus, and apparently images relating to health, death and disability did crop up in her work, but for this particular book I am unsure of the extent.
The Matzah Ball- Meltzer, Jean A Hanukkah romance featuring a female MC living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome who must put aside her love for Christmas (and her rivalry with her archenemy) to write a Hanukkah romance. A lot of people seem to like this book, but there's a great deal of concern surrounding the supposed glorification of the IDF (I believe at one point it is referenced during a scene of flirty banter between the characters) as well as the author's stance on the ongoing genocide. There's also a lot of debate around the idea that the character is hiding her love of Christmas, with people saying it suggests that Jewish people cannot like Christmas as well as celebrate Hanukkah. Apparently, the MC hiding her love of Christmas from her family is also compared to someone coming out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community.

"In a decade of romantic comedies, romantic dramas have quietly been making themselves known. Romantic dramas might lean a bit melancholy, but they are all the better for it. Like brown butter in a chocolate chip cookie, the dash of darkness only makes the end result richer.
Much like romantic comedies, romantic dramas are an effective sub-genre, where the evoked mood is dramatic rather than comedic. Although I don’t think there’s a universal definition of romantic drama, generally a romantic drama is a novel with a primary relationship that ends in a happily ever after/ happy for now (HEA/HFN) with a serious tone or subject. This could be a romance novel that unpacks mental health, grief, or other difficult subjects.
I think selling romantic dramas for what they are is valuable for readers, authors, and publishers who want to sell and share books that fall outside the bounds of the rom-com. Undeniably, rom-coms have done serious numbers over the years; however, so have romantic dramas. It is helpful if readers know what tone they are confronting when they pick up a book. Ultimately, romantic dramas need good, specific marketing with clear language to set the books up for success."

M/M Book Recommendations Part III.
Title: The remaking of Corbin Wale
Author: Roan Parrish
My Thoughts:
This book is cozy. Just thinking about it makes me want to go back to the day I read this— Christmas time. Well, you don’ have to wait for Christmas to read this, just saying it’s that kind of book. Anyway, this story is about Alex who opens shop in his hometown. A fresh start and doing what he always wanted to, then one day the mysterious Corbin Wale comes in and changes everything. It’s one of those meet cutes that i’m a sucker for. ❤️ Alex gets to know Corbin, who seems to be followed by misfortunes and he also wants to know the truth about his drawings and who he really is. There is ALMOST no conflict between them, everything is so soft and nothing hurts. I like how Corbin changes, well, how they both change each other. That whole becoming a better person for someone you love thing. That’s it. If you want a sweet read, with just a tiny bit of ache then go for this.
Title: Shiver
Author: Jocelynn Drake
My Thoughts :
I read this book cause I was looking for the “bodyguard” trope. This one delivered. It’s simple, a really rich guy gets threatened and he gets a bodyguard to protect him. Only, he gets more than that 😏😏😏. This is book one of a series so you’ll get alot of other characters that you can get attached to, don’t worry, they will get their own books. It’s a fast read and one that you can pick up on a weekend and you’ll be set.
Title: Enemies of the State
Author: Tal Bauer
My Thoughts:
The President and his Bodyguard fall in love. That’s the selling point of this book BUT THIS IS SO MUCH MORE THAN THAT. Tal Bauer is an intelligent author and this one reads like a Netflix series that just happens to have an mlm pair. You have the in’s and out’s of the White house, politics, Russia, power dynamics, discrimination and terrorists. President Jack Spier is an American hero, who lost his wife in a War. He stayed single and spent his years in Politics, no scandals all his life and the perfect man to take the seat of a Leader. Then Ethan, a seasoned security detail gets assigned to him. This has the friends to lovers trope that makes you want to scream. The slow burn. The misunderstanding. Forbidden love with high as fuck stakes. THE ANGST. The hurt/comfort!!!!! I want all my ships to have an AU of this book 😭😭 Plus, the EXPLICIT scenes are just that. Explicit. HOT. What smut writers aim for HOT. 😂 Alot of things happen in this one book so be ready, there is almost something cinematic about this. You’ll understand once you’ve read it. This is book 1 of a Trilogy. You’re welcome. 🖤
Title: Twelfth Knight
Author: Victoria Sue
My Thoughts :
Merlin and Arthur. Need I say more? Yes. This story is set in the modern world with Arthur and his Knights. It may not be for everyone, like i think some people want something more serious, but the easy pace and language can be enjoyable. Merlin’s promise to Arthur before he died. There is so much more in this world in the books to come and I hope more fantasy aspect and plot in the Mix.
Title: The Watchmaker of Filigree street
Author: Natasha Pulley
My Thoughts:
There is something about the setting about this book that made me feel nostalgic even if I have no idea about their timeline at all. The author just painted this world, it’s people and every scene so beautifully. This book starts with Thaniel and a bomb explosion / a mysterious watch. Then the Watchmaker, Mori. I can’t say too much without spoiling stuff, but the fantasy aspect of this is Clairvoyance. How it’s worked into this story in itself is almost heart breaking. 😭 One thing I didn’t like is who the Villain was. I guess I wanted this “person” to be a different character or be “used” in a better way. The pairing, Thaniel/Mori has the whole age gap thing going on — and Mori saying he has to be in London. Ugh. 😭😍 There’s a sequel that will come out this year and I am very excited.
Title: The Wolf and the Sparrow
Author: Isabelle Adler
My Thoughts:
This one is a standalone fantasy story and that in itself sold me. Add in the arranged marriage trope, AND MAAAAAAN. I’m all in. The main drivers of this story : the marriage, Callan grieving for his dead wife, Derek moving to this new kingdom and trying to fit in and A War that’s threatening all of them. I can’t even count the amount of “arranged” marriage fanfics I have read and this one seems fresh all over again. I love the relationship between the main characters and since it’s just one book- expect some insta love. There is a part in this story where they both get captured and I must say, it’s one of the best things I have read. That. Whole. Experience. Plus, when they do get together? IT WAS HOT. I knew it was coming, but it was so worth it. Even with all the “instalove”, there’s still a really good pay off. The fantasy part in this is not shown too much though. It could be expanded, I’m not gonna be mad if they suddenly announce a sequel. But yeah, If you want just one solid read, this is it.
Title: The Last Sun
Author: KD Edwards
My Thoughts :
So, this is one of those books that I put off reading all because everyone was saying it’s super good & I didn’t buy it. BUT I WAS SO WRONG. This book. This world is amazing. I have never read a book that has the whole “ Tarot Cards” as a main theme , and how it works into this book is the reason why I have always loved Fantasy books. This is Book 1 of a projected 9 book series and I am so excited how this will expand, I haven’t read the second book cause i wanna save it. I love the relationship between the two main characters, Rune and Brand. A scion and it’s sworn companion. Something about it reminds me of a bond like with a parabatai ( city of bones) . I love their banter. The characters in this are A+. LORD TOWER. Max. Quinn. Ciaran. ADDAM FUCKING SAINT NICHOLAS. You will get attached to them, I’m warning you. It’s a really solid fantasy/adventure story. Rune and Addam as a pair is so delicious, I find myself smiling every time they have scenes together. Their love, as it continues on will be SO PURE. I can see it. Do yourself a favor the same way I did, BUY THIS BOOK. Read it.

Reading update:
Tumblr media
AHH. So good. I read Timothy Janovsky’s first book in this series, Never Been Kissed, and while I enjoyed it, I didn’t love it. I loved this one. It’s about a spoiled rich boy (the titular Matthew Prince), who gets sent away to the small town where his mother was raised. There, he meets Hector, who also turns out to be his roommate (Hector is staying with Matthew’s grandparents because he can’t afford housing at the university in town). Obviously, Matthew learns to be less selfish and entitled, and he falls in love with Hector, and everything is adorable and wonderful. 5 stars.
Tumblr media
This one was...alright. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great either. Barista and rock star fall in love, overcome obstacles to be together, the standard. The barista is interesting because he’s at university but has a very young daughter with his best friend, because they got drunk and slept together, despite him being fully aware he’s gay. So he’s laser focused on school and work so he can send money back to them and also finish uni on time, so the friend can take her turn with her education. The MC’s posh family is also homophobic, and I always enjoy a good putting-the-homophobic-family-in-their-place scene. The main problem with this book is that it needed better editing. It just could have been a lot tighter. And some of the jokes fell flat, like...I felt like I was kind of missing something? It was probably funnier in Hayden Stone’s head.
Tumblr media
This is the second in the Logan, Minnesota series. This one takes place a year after the first and focused on one of the side characters from the first, Arthur. I was...concerned, because it’s made abundantly clear in Let it Snow (the first book) that Arthur is very into BDSM. Since that can be one of my squicks, I was iffy on this book. Also Arthur was obnoxious in the first book. I ended up liking it a lot. Arthur, unsurprisingly, is less obnoxious in his own book, and I really liked Gabriel, the town library who he falls in love with. There are some BDSM elements but quite mild, so it didn’t squick me.
Tumblr media
This was more of a novella, about a guy trying to get home for Christmas. A winter storm shuts down flights all across the country, and by the time it occurs to him to rent a car, all the rental cars are gone too...but then the person who got the very last rental car walks up to the desk and it turns out...the main character knows him! They went to high school together, and they clearly have History. A road trip ensues and of course they get together. Considering how short this book was, there was a lot of sex. Which was fine lol. You know, good for them. Again, fine, but not amazing.
Oh, and honestly, I’m pretty sure it’s the same person kissing himself on the cover?? I’ve spent too long staring at it at this point.
Tumblr media
Roan Parrish is really turning into one of my favorite authors. I’m asking you to ignore the incredibly cheesy cover and that tagline on it. This book is about a man, Adam, who adopted his sister’s child, and eventually his partner (it’s unclear if they were married) is like, nah, I’m not interested in this. So Adam and his daughter, Gus, return to the town Adam is from—Garnet Run, WY (this is the third in the Garnet Run series). Their neighbor is this weirdo, Wes, who only comes out at night and never talks to anyone. Gus breaks into his house because she sees something interesting and is extremely taken with all his pets, especially his tarantula (Bettie). Adam is obviously horrified by his daughter’s behavior, but Gus can’t take a hint, and she keeps bugging Wes. Adam and Wes obviously end up falling in love.
The ostensible plot of this book is that because Gus is sad about her other dad abandoning her (and he legit does), Adam asks her what she wants for Christmas, and she says for their house to have the most Christmas lights ever. And it’s fine, it works, it causes the wedge between Adam and Wes before their inevitable HEA—but the characters in this book were just, ahhhh. Lovely. I loved them. We got to see Charlie and Rye from the previous book, which was fun, and River, who is Adam’s sibling, had a pretty decent role. Wes’s background and the reason he’s the way he is is pretty sad, but it worked really well, and I loved how enthusiastic and sensitive Adam was. I even loved Gus! A child character! So yeah, I recommend this one. 5 stars.
Tumblr media
The third in the Logan, Minnesota series. This one focuses on the third friend in the trio from the first book, Paul. What we mainly know about Paul going into this book is that he was friends with benefits with Arthur, but really, he wanted a relationship—and when it became clear he wasn’t going to get one with Arthur, he moved out of their shared cabin. Turns out Paul is very shy and desperately loves Hallmark holiday movies, because everything turns out okay in the end, and that’s what he wants. He can’t find a man who wants to settle down and also his family is completely horrible and thinks him being gay is a phase (he’s 38).
His love interest is Kyle, who is 25 and has had a crush on Paul since middle school. I love an age gap romance so right away this one kind of became my favorite in the series. There’s a lot of angsting about the age gap at first (by Paul). What I liked a lot about this one was that these two guys really really want to be with someone, and they’re looking for a partner to settle down with. It was a change from the first two books.
Tumblr media
Another Roan Parrish novel. This one has actually been in my TBR pile for months, and I didn’t realize it was a holiday book until recently. It’s very different from what she usually writes, but was absolutely gorgeous. Really lyrical and magical. It’s about Alex, a baker, and Corbin, a very strange man who lives in Alex’s Michigan hometown. Corbin is intensely, heartbreakingly lonely, because he’s been told all his life that his family is cursed, and that anyone they fall in love with will die within a year. So he doesn’t let himself get close to anyone.
Highly highly recommend this one. Definitely a 5 star read.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More Fence. Nothing really to say about it, it’s a bunch of pretty, gay boys fencing.
Tumblr media
I’m just going to copy my review from Storygraph here, and it does contain spoilers, so if you want to read this book (please don’t, it was so bad), I guess don’t read my review:
Where to begin with this book. I'm a fan of Simmons' work—Hyperion is possibly my favorite book ever, and I really enjoyed the much-maligned The Terror. First off, I actually liked the mountain-climbing detail. Yes, it was long and technical, but that was the strongest part of the book. I probably would have given it a 3.5 star rating if not for the final section. I guess Simmons wanted to write a WWII book and a Mount Everest book, and for some reason he thought it would be a good idea to make them into the same book. The big twist is that a whole bunch of people died (and climbed Mt Everest) for photographic evidence that Hitler had sex with young boys—and we find out in the epilogue that the threat of this getting out stops Hitler from invading the UK in 1941. Absurd. Absolutely absurd. I was actually laughing. This book was written pre-2016, so I guess it wasn't as painfully obvious that people can do horrible things and still rise to and stay in power, but I couldn't suspend my disbelief. Also, Winston Churchill is in it, because of course he is. And Lawrence of Arabia and Charlie Chaplin show up. Why? Who knows! Why not. Literally the only reason I'm giving this book 1 star instead of like, 0.25 stars is because Yetis may have saved the main character from the Nazis.
And this was not in my Storygraph review but I keep thinking about it—if Hitler didn’t want these photos getting out so badly, couldn’t Churchill have, idk, stopped the whole war? And the Holocaust? As my wife put it, Mr Simmons, I am vexed by the gaping plot hole in your novel.
UGH
Current read/palate cleanser:
Tumblr media
This is another one set in Logan, MN, but is part of a new series. I haven’t actually started reading it yet but just looking at it is soothing me after reading the trash fire that was The Abominable.

"“Okay, so no bullshit about what we’re thankful for. Let’s play Never Have I Ever instead.” “Are you thirteen?” Alex asked. “Never Have I Ever is a drinking game, so I did not play it when I was thirteen. Besides, it’s a great way to get to know each other,” Gareth insisted, looking pointedly at Corbin."
