Rem, I'm in need of a bestie right now because my friends are too conventional for my taste hahaa. I want to manifest my SP following me on insta, this is just for fun tbh because I could follow him myself. We talk, and in fact he asked for my insta when we met, but at that time I had deactivated mine, so we did not follow each other. I know that following him would be the normal thing to do, but for some reason I have gotten this strong desire of having HIM find me and follow ME (without asking him to do it). Like my insta magically appearing in his suggestions and him following me, and I know it can happen because I got his suggested to me, so the same can happen to him.

Speculating the Jump Force roster

Because I’m hype as HELL for this game

One Piece has Luffy and being one of the biggest universes in all of anime there’s a LOT to pick from. The Straw Hats alone could put in Zoro, Nami, Sanji, Robin or Franky (Usopp, Chopper or Brook maybe? Probably assist characters). Then there’s Jimbei, Shanks, Hancock, Mihawk, Ace, Law, AND THEN there’s villain like Akainu, Crocodile, Doflamingo, Blackbeard…...there’s a lot to pick from. Depending on the size of their roster this could go a lot of different ways. Any number of folks from the pool above. Dragon Ball is a similar case. Goku and Frieza are there and I don’t feel unsafe even remotely assuming Vegeta will hop in soon. From there there’s a big pool. Gohan, Krillin, Piccolo, Trunks--maybe Cell or Buu for more villains? I wonder if even Beerus since DBS is being backwards adapted into a manga. Naruto also has a huge cast but I think it’s much easier divided into folks who are safer to make it than the above two. I think Sasuke is a safe bet. Madara was in J-Stars but if they swapped him for like Pain or Orochimaru I wouldn’t be surprised. Maybe Kakashi after that? Mayyyyybe Rock Lee or Gaara if they feel like really throwing us a bone? Frankly I’m a little surprised Boruto didn’t show up here all things considered but I can’t complain. Death Note I just doubt is getting anyone else. I’m assuming Light will be getting help from Ryuk Ice Climbers style and...I guess they could pull Misa with Rem? I guess that’d be a little redundant. Let’s see how these two we have even play out, I’m really curious. Now for the stuff that isn’t confirmed but I think probably will be...

My Hero Academia is WSJ’s newest and biggest hit and it’s overdue for at least a few reps. Right out of the box Midoriya, Bakugou, and Todoroki seem like an easy and solid trio to represent--All Might maybe but he feels a little ‘above’ being a full fledged fighter, y’know? They might throw in a girl too--Asui, Yaoyorozu, and/or most likely Uraraka could all be fun. Mayyyybe Eraserhead? Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure I feel least certain guessing on because it all depends on which part(s) they feel like pushing. Jotaro is the most popular Jojo, but they went with Jonathan and Joseph in J-Stars, but Josuke was the most recent anime adaption, BUT Gionro is getting one soon (maybe? hopefully?). Then corresponding villain. Could be Dio, could be Kira, it all depends. Hunter x Hunter will have Gon and Killua...will they make Hisoka fully playable already? Don’t blue ball me and make him an assist like in J-Stars. I don’t really see them going beyond there...maybe Meruem. Bleach is a weird case because while it’s still a part of WSJ’s history, it’s very clear that they’re trying to push it to the back. It had a rushed ending and evidently, Kubo isn’t fond of his time with the magazine. This makes me wonder how many spots they’ll give it. Ichigo for sure, from there it could be Rukia, Aizen, Byakuya, or Kenpachi? I never made it so, so far in this series so I don’t know exactly who the biggest characters really are by the end. Yu Yu Hakusho should have Yusuke, from there his friends are kinda on the same footing. Could be Genkai, Kuwabara, Hiei, or Kurama and I wouldn’t be so surprised. But if Sensui makes it in over Toguro I’ll go on a rampage. Rurouni Kenshin SO elephant in the room--I know, I know. But I think we will end up seeing Kenshin. Watsuki’s arrest was less than a year ago and this game must’ve been some way along by then and I think it’d be too late to remove all representation of Kenshin, which is one of the biggest WSJ properties of the 90s and has a revival manga going, which Watsuki has been released from prison to continue (uughhggh). BUT. If Kenshin and Shishio make it in and there’s nothing we can do about it I still love them and playing them won’t hurt anyone. I wonder if they’d throw a curveball and maybe add Sano and Saito? I hope we see Shishio again--he’s my main in J-Stars, he’s not an unpopular villain but he’s not a household name like Frieza so I guess we’ll see. Fist of the North Star will probably have Kenshiro. J-Stars had Raoh but I don’t strongly feel he’ll return--maybe though. Rei, Shin, Mamiya, and Toki are all pretty believable candidates. And even though it’s awful we’ll probably see Black Clover in this. They’re trying really hard to push it and make it work so yeah we’ll probably have to endure screams from Asta and maybe his brother will be there too and no one will care. Food Wars has really shot up in the consideration of everyone. Sure, Soma is a chef but I never thought I’d see Light knuckle up, either. They could get creative. Speaking of less conventional fighters, maybe we’ll get to see Yu-Gi-Oh’s Yami Yugi in the ring. He could summon monsters and that’d be neat. From there there’s some of the smaller series that will probably have just one character--Korosensei, Arale, Kinnikuman, some of those surprises and retro folks.

Notes: This chapter is long, long, long overdue, initially because of writer's block and then because of the stages of grief that came with realizing V route was going to (and did) redact a lot of my fic into firm AU territory. I've decided that instead of changing my plans for this fic to align with the information provided by V route, I'm going to continue with what I originally had planned for the fic. I'm not complaining about having additional canon information-- it's fantastic-- but I fear my motivation to finish this will dwindle into nothing if I have to go off my original course too much. I started writing this chapter before V route and finished it after, and it's probably the first time I make a major divergence from canon (other than, you know, having V be the reincarnation of a shinigami from an entirely different series) on purpose. I really hope you enjoy this and I apologize for taking so long to get it out!

It's not her first week or even her first month at school when another student, not by his actions or anything he's said but by his mere presence, strikes Rem breathless. She's seen him before, in church, in class, but she never realized until now that she isn't the only person who spends their recesses outside alone. As if pushed away by some invisible force filling the air, he stands at the edge of the school courtyard; perhaps it's the same force that compelled Rem to wander off here in the first place. The tall and empty walls that should have diminished him with their size are inferior to the look in his eyes, ice and fire all at once, passionate scrutiny, and with a start this young boy reminds Rem not of her own downfall but of Misa's, the man she loved who used love like a weapon and turned a god to ash. It's too much memory for a boy so young, and when he turns that gaze on Rem in this soft, child's body and asks, "Why do you look at me that way?," Rem has spent enough time as a human to know that he is art.

Her eyes find her shoes, black and freshly shined the night before by Yunseo. The other boy wears similar ones of a slightly different style, his pointed at the front where Jihyun's are square, standard footwear for the compulsory school uniform. Rem hesitates, then raises her head again to look at his face.

"What's your name?" she asks, and the question feels too personal, a few characters on a page that could be the difference between life and death, a secret to be closely guarded yet is so easily taken away.

"You don't know it?" the boy questions, an overly critical crease in his forehead for someone his age. "We've been in the same class for two months and twelve days, we attend the same church, and we've visited each other's houses before, but you don't know my name?"

He speaks like he spends his free time reading the dictionary, a pastime Rem can't deny she's participated in herself before out of boredom, selective of his words in a way that's unnatural for his stature. She stares wide-eyed at him for his harshness. Human names and even faces are difficult, slipping in and out of her mind without a trace no matter how hard she tries, and she's tempted to ask how he can remember her name before she realizes he's not given any particular indication that he does.

"I suppose I've forgotten," she mumbles, allowing her language to slip back into the stiff formalness she was accustomed to as a shinigami to match the other's speech. She's surprised to find how unforced it feels, realizing for the first time that her quietness around most humans might be due to the amount of effort it takes to vocalize as they expect Jihyun to.

The other blinks, scowling but apparently unable to look away from her, and after a moment of contemplative silence he slowly utters, "My name is Jumin Han."

It's a name she's heard before, the Han part certainly is, in her parents' dinner conversations and dripping with bitter spite from Yunseo's lips. His family doesn't live far from where Jihyun's does, a large house with black panels that's more modern than most others in the neighbourhood, though the inside is more traditional than one might expect.

She repeats the name several times in her head, Jumin Han, Jumin Han, the words more precious than the other boy could realize, and somehow she knows that this time she won't forget.

"The conventional thing to do, at this point," the other says, startling Rem out of her thoughts, "would be to introduce yourself, but there's no need as I already know who you are."

She nods, her lips feeling stuck together, and though the boy is stern she finds herself taking his word for it easily, something about him exuding honesty and trustworthiness even while he rebukes her with his words. She feels she's somehow unearthed something, trespassed into a space she wasn't meant to be and stuck gold, like the earrings she wore as a shinigami, like the pink paint she took from the human world. He doesn't seem bothered by her staring, though he doesn't meet her eyes, and for a moment Rem longs to stay like this, silently drinking in the details of this boy's world, a world that appears to be all his own, separate from the oversaturation and noise she's come to associate with the human realm. He doesn't interrupt her, completely still and with perfect posture, and she knows then that she was wrong in her initial assessment of him. This boy is better than Light Yagami, greater than Light Yagami, and if the gods fell for him it would only be natural, his effortless honesty making him worthy of it, with no need for deception or delicate maneuvering to make it happen. He emanates magnetism, seems almost composed of it, and it's a quality she thinks can't be taken from him, a fundamental of his being that makes him meant to walk this earth.

She tears her eyes away; too much, too much, and when she does he takes a step toward her and she finds herself breathless once more.

"Spend recess with me," he says, his right foot barely a few centimetres from hers, eyes full of intensity. She nods again, refusing to look away this time, and he remains for just a moment, holding her there in his world, before he moves back.

And then he smiles.

Muscles in his face relax, eyebrows lose their arch, his lips curve just barely upward, and he looks at her with a carefreeness she wouldn't have thought him capable of as the warm light of morning seems to envelop her from his face.

"Good," he says, motioning to a bench by one of the paths in the courtyard. "Should we sit? I think we'll like each other, Jihyun."

Rem knows he's right, and it's a strange feeling, unaccustomed to attention or her presence being wanted, and together they walk away from the towering wall.

Jumin becomes a fixture in her life with ease, occupying a place she didn't know existed and fitting perfectly into it. The two of them are silent more often than not, but it's a different sort of silence than that she shares with her family, a silence that's whole instead of hollow, a silence that's full like a sponge with water, and while she can't tell if she herself contributes anything to that completeness, she knows Jumin does with his overwhelming presence. They don't speak because there's no need for words, and when the words do come they are easy, unedited in their clunkiness, too big for either of them and their children's bodies. She's half-tempted to tell him her history, to ask if he was a god once too, but otherworldly as he seems Rem knows there's something irrevocably human about him, the very thing that drew the likes of herself and Gelus to this world in the first place.

Rem's searches for gods who'd become humans are mostly fruitless, references to human descent almost invariably linked to Christianity. Typing in Gelus's name does nothing either, the other apparently uninterested in making himself known to other former shinigami, if he's even here at all. It's possible that if he too became human then he's in a completely different time period than Rem is, or a different timeline altogether. And there's also a chance he didn't become a human in the first place.

It's much easier to find references to the opposite, the concept of humans that become gods, deification or apotheosis as the process is called. Humans appear to be fascinated by the idea, and Rem supposes she can understand what the allure of power and eternity could be to people who never had them within their grasp. She too might find it enthralling, were the power she had not the power of death, and were the eternity she had not dependent on it. Her parents never ask what she's searching for, so she never has to hide it, though she likely could if she wanted to because Jihyun apparently inherited her talent for going unnoticed, though not through any ability to be literally invisible. He slips in an out of places almost without a sound, and those just realizing he's entered the room remark that he surprises them with his quiet. She doesn't broach the subjects she searches for with Jumin, either, though he'd undoubtedly be interested in the concept of descent from godhood, but he's too sharp and too perceptive for Rem to fully trust he wouldn't put the entire picture together.

He starts inviting her to his house, and though Jihyun is allowed to invite over anyone he wants, he's also allowed to go any place he wishes, and Rem prefers to be at Jumin's. The other boy's house is full of invisible people; kitchen staff and housekeepers that Rem rarely sees, going about their obligations to maintain the orderliness of the place. Jumin doesn't think twice about it, and soon neither does Rem, the novelty of being seen both unnerving and difficult not to enjoy. Jumin listens to her, and Rem knows that if she ever asked him to make her a promise he wouldn't break it, possessing a degree of respect for her that's totally foreign to her life.

Jumin's father is rarely home, though his mother always is, and Jumin makes a point to correct Jihyun when he refers to her as such, firmly informing her that the woman living in his house is not his mother. Rem gives him a questioning look, less aware of human customs than she expected, and Jumin says he'll explain it another time.

Jumin's insistence that he and Jihyun be alone most of the time is no discomfort to her, used to adults taking little interest in her life. Even when their parents get together for dinner, Jumin prefers that the two of them take off on their own as soon as the meal is finished, circling the perimeter of his garden or sitting on the rug in his bedroom.

"I thought you were looking forward to having dinner together with your father," Rem comments, purposely not phrasing it as a question so the other doesn't feel obliged to respond. Jumin leans back against the footboard of his bed, so large it could probably swallow him.

"I was," he says, tracing circles on his kneecap. Even outside of school, Jumin dresses as if in uniform. Jihyun wears a t-shirt and jeans, though Rem isn't sure whether or not they're expensive. "But his girlfriend is with him, and I don't like her."

"Oh," Rem says, and suddenly everything makes sense. She wondered why the woman who appeared to be Mr. Han's wife was so young, but time spent with Kyosuke Higuchi should've told her that this was normal for businessmen. Jumin's father seems so kind, though, she wouldn't have thought to connect the two even in spite of them having the same occupation.

"Mm," Jumin acknowledges. She watches him for a moment, wondering if he wants to elaborate, but he says nothing more so she doesn't press him. Jumin's bedroom is nice, a bit oversized but so is Jihyun's. Everything from the wooden floors to the bed to the armchairs on either side of the table in the middle of the room are white, the only exception provided by a fish tank that sits on top of the table, the fish swimming inside reflecting the sunlight with vibrant colours.

It's quiet for a long time, and Rem wonders for a moment why Jumin sits on the floor when his room has armchairs and a window seat, and she's trying to decide if that's too impolite to ask when she feels a weight press against her arm, eyes widening as she realizes Jumin has shifted to lean on her, just slightly, his dark hair falling on Jihyun's shoulder. The touch is unexpected, accustomed to her only contact being Yunseo's hand firmly grasping Jihyun's when crossing the street or in a crowded place.

"Jumin?"

Jumin stiffens, and Rem regrets it for a moment as he raises his head ever so slightly, then seems to change his mind and leans on Jihyun again.

"You know," he says softly. Jihyun waits. "I've never had a friend before."

This isn't surprising. Jumin is young, has hardly had enough time in the world for it to be confusing that he hasn't made friends before, but the word puts Rem on alert.

"Friend?" she echoes, and Jumin shifts off of her shoulder to engage her in a serious look.

"That's what we are, right?" he asks, and though his voice is steely the question is sincere, searching her face with his silver eyes for answers. "Friends?"

Rem returns his eye contact and for once wonders if Jumin feels her presence as strongly as she feels his, because he averts his gaze slightly to look at her nose instead of her eyes. It's a word Rem hadn't considered for them before. Friends… the weight with which Jumin spoke the word makes sense now, though Jumin himself wouldn't be able to understand it. He's a young boy with the body of a delicate child, only a few short years into school. Rem is ancient, lived for centuries without ever having a single friend, the closest perhaps being Gelus, but even then it was she who was fascinated by him, the other shinigami sharing no similar interest in Rem or anyone other than the human girl he watched. That, of course, was natural. And Misa could hardly be called a friend, care for her as much as Rem did.

But him… Jumin Han. He seeks out Jihyun's presence, remembers things about him that Jihyun doesn't remember about himself, hangs onto his every word even when they're clumsily put together and say nothing of importance. He's unselfish, doesn't only care for Jihyun to the extent that Jihyun can be useful to him, whether as a willing sacrifice or a soundboard. Jumin is considerate of Rem, gives her special attention that even her parents don't give her. His eyes are the only place that Rem holds any significance—that Rem ever held any significance.

"Yes," she breathes, and Jumin watches her, unwavering. "I suppose we are."

Jumin slowly nods, then shifts again, replacing his head against her shoulder once more. Silence overtakes the air, the distant sound of parents' voices downstairs drifting into the room from behind the closed door.

"Let's stay this way," Jumin murmurs, and Rem can hear in his voice that this time it's not a command.

It's a plea.

"We will," she says.

She hopes he can hear in Jihyun's voice that it's a vow.

The perils of flipping new houses

All over Southwestern Ontario in cities like London, Woodstock, Brantford, Paris, Kitchener and Cambridge, out of town buyers – mostly from areas like Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton – are purchasing new houses and townhouses on spec with the sole intentions of doing flips.

It all sounds so easy. First you follow the roadside signs to a homebuilder’s trailer and sign an offer to buy. Make sure you bring your I.D. and make sure you ask about the $5,000 free appliance offer. Then you must follow further builder’s instructions to make a series of small extra down payments. That’s no big deal, it’s just how it works. Let’s hope you have the money to do it or room on your credit cards. The agreement will state a closing date off in the future, like 18 months away. It’s that simple. Over that period resale prices should jump up 10 or 20 per cent. Conventional wisdom seems to tell us that.

Then you wait and do nothing except do a final walk-through and then close the deal. It helps if you know a good mortgage broker. It also helps if you spring for the one minor upgrade of putting in a gas hookup in the kitchen for a gas stove. Some buyers expect that and sometimes it can make or break a deal. Then resell the house and take the profits and go somewhere else and do it again. Some purchasers are now on their second or third successful flips. What an easy way to quickly get ahead in life!

But sometimes unexpected wrinkles pop up. If you buy one of these units, sometimes you must wait a year or two until the market prices reach up to your expectations. This means you may have to rent it out for a short period to help cover the carrying costs. To find a good tenant, some buyers turn to Kijiji and others to the services offered by real estate agents. New houses and town homes for rent are now regularly popping up increasingly on the MLS system, sporting remarks in the fine print of the listing such as, “Please give credit reports with score, employment letter / stubs, lease agreement, non-smoking policy, references and no pets please.” So, what if the rents collected do not totally cover the cost involved in carrying a new property?

You just have to hope for the best. No stains on the carpets, no oil stains on the driveway, no hockey puck dents in the garage door and no dropping of frying pans on the ceramic floors in the kitchen. No matter what kind of lease you write up, the tenants will always have the right to cook and some people like to cook up a storm.

The concept of having tenants in a brand-new house for a year might be somewhat difficult to get your head around. You also must hope the new tenants will report back to you on such issues as sump pumps not working properly and window wells clogged up with debris. It is not nice to get a midnight call about a basement flooding.

On the flip side, new tenants often must put up with all the inconveniences of having construction activities and mud or dust all around them. With no sod on the ground, dust bowls may blow up quickly.

So, what’s with the picture of the row of freeholds at the top of this article? Do you notice a few things that are missing? Where are the fences, the decks and the landscaping? We took this picture from the street and it shows one- and two-year-old finished freehold units in Brantford, Ont.  Similar pictures could have been taken in towns and cities all over this region.

Who is going to foot the bill for the much-needed fences, decks and landscaping? This is an issue that often squashes deals being done by real estate agents who are trying to get them leased out. For many “flippers” these are all minor concerns, which will somehow work themselves out over time at someone else’s cost.

Tenants’ best interests are never really taken into consideration. Tie your dog up to a stake in your rear yard with a rope that is less than 14 feet long. Pets are not supposed to part of this equation anyways. Wheel your barbecue out into the driveway to use it. Living in new units like this often comes with several compromises. If you’re lucky and one of your immediate neighbours is actually an owner, you might benefit from a partial fence going up.

In London, which is where I sell real estate, there are now more than a dozen brand new executive houses for rent on the MLS system with rent prices typically in the $2,000 to $2,750 per month price range. Yet that is only part of the story. Many more units are posted for rent on Kijiji, Facebook or on the Toronto Real Estate Board and access to show these units is accomplished with the use of keys placed in lock boxes. While these rental prices may seem to be a good deal, there is always the worry of the landlords putting up for sale signs near the end of the leases or asking to put a family member into the house.

It’s a jungle out there. Everyone knows that new projects will sell out quickly, sometimes even before a shovel has hit the ground. Builders understand they are selling to captive audiences who are not big on spending too much money on costly upgrades. At the same time, builders take comfort in having firm sales posted on their books just in the off-chance that the markets decide to tank. Smart builders also play the game of pricing their units defensively in the hopes of not giving away excessive profits to the speculators.

Buyers like to play the game of being one of the first to sign up as new customers in the hopes that their new builder will be constantly changing their asking prices upwards.

As for the exercise of paying out commissions to agents who want to register new buyers’ names with them, that gig in many new projects is now over. Builders now don’t need an endless wave of new buyers because they continue to pour in off the streets. In this environment cutting out the middleman makes perfect sense.

Case Study: Little Pioneer Cider House Rebuild

Beginning in mid-2014 I began working on a project in my spare time, Little Pioneer Cider House.  Its been an interesting project to pick up and put down, as I’ve learned so much with each tweak and iteration on the project.  My most recent work on it has been the most impressive, so I’ve turned it into a case study.

About three years ago my friend Craig Levy, owner of Little Pioneer Cider House had a problem on his hands:  his website was in dire need of an overhaul as it was impossible to update and expensive to maintain.  About 10 years prior he had a site built that was excellent at the time and had many interesting features, but as time marched on the technology changed his site had become outdated for his needs and to build new features.

At the time, I as a project web developer at ESPN working on an Ad Production team, I was itching to take on side projects that pushed my technical and creative skillsets as a front end developer to the next level, so I offered to rebuild the site for him.  As Craig mostly needed a way to showcase his work, his reviews and give people a way to contact him, I suggested using a GitHub page as a cost effective solution that met all of his requirements.  Little Pioneer Cider House is still a GitHub page today, and still meets all of those requirements.

It has been a mutually beneficial web development relationship, as Craig got a shiny new responsive site (that cost a fraction of what his old site did to host) and I got an interesting side project under my belt. Life went on happily between Craig, his new site and I for the next few years.  Every now and then I’d update the copy or add a photo, easy things to update.  As I moved on from my role at ESPN to become a front end developer at Fast Company, I would periodically try new things out as I was learning them whenever I could.  As time progressed, so did the complexity of working on the Little Pioneer Cider House repository, which became an ever growing problem for me.  You can take a glance at that here.

The crux of the problem with Little Pioneer Cider House is that it lacked automation, but had a lot of optimization.  Over time I decided to optimize images, compress the HTML and minify the CSS, at the benefit of the site but at the expense of making it easier for me to work with.  Each time I made a change to something here or there on the site, this was my workflow:

Change the file name in the head of the document to the unminified version of the CSS, then start watching the CSS for changes.

Make the said changes to the HTML and CSS as needed.

Revert the file name to the minified version again when finished.

Take the unminified compiled CSS copy it into an online CSS minifier and run that.  Then I’d have to delete the old minified CSS in favor of the new minified CSS and save.

Take the uncompressed HTML (which I labeled pagenameuncompressed.html), copy it and run that through a HTML compressor online.  THEN paste that into a separate file (just labeled pagename.html) and save.

Push all those changes to master

On the gh-pages branch, rebase master.

Push to gh-pages.

Switch back to master.

Nine steps to get one thing done!  Even the smallest copy change could take quite a bit of time to execute and the rate of human error was exponentially higher to boot.

The secondary problem with Little Pioneer Cider House is that although the site was technically responsive as it worked on mobile, tablet and desktop, it wasn’t a visually great experience in all places  (Check it out).  When I build this project initially I was using Bootstrap with some customized breakpoints as well as relying on some exact pixel measurements for various components.  When I started out building Little Pioneer Cider House and with my experience level at the time, this worked out great.  However, as other tools became available and I became a better front end developer, I knew that I was selling both the site and myself short as it didn’t look great on all devices, just..  Okay.  Sometimes.  As long as you didn’t look at it on certain orientations or, say, tablets.

To address the major issue of automation for Little Pioneer Cider House, I relied on a separate project that I had created about a year ago called Snazzie.  Snazzie is a static site generator that allows me to quickly build sites, compress and minify all the assets and also pushes the end result to github pages.  It was the perfect solution for the problem- taking a project that had nine steps to push to production down to three.  Problem solved in about an hour or two, including all the time to set up the SASS files.

The second issue of responsiveness ended up being the more complex one to solve, and ultimately much more satisfying to complete.  I’ll outline that here.

Before I even began iterating over the SASS files, I first thought of how I wanted to organize the project for present and future use.  I decided to use BEM for this project and see how much I could abstract throughout, so that I could use a minimum of components in a maximum of places.  In the last year or so I’ve become a huge fan of BEM as it makes modifications much easier to do by flattening classes.

Using BEM in Little Pioneer Cider House also left a lot of room for expansion in the future with naming conventions in place, which I liked.  For example, although many of the pages have the same types of elements, they could have slightly different names attached to them for easy organization and possible encapsulation. (See here and here.)   If I want to add more pages or elements in the future, I really just need to add more block level classes to the existing set and then modify in the page or component partial as needed.

Once I had my approach set, I tackled the heavy lifting of refining Little Pioneer Cider House.  Generally speaking, I smoothed out a lot of the rough edges by first removing Bootstrap in favor of Foundation 6 (as I wanted to use their flex grid and rem-calc functions).  It made aligning some elements easier, which improved the overall experience greatly with minimal changes.  I also liked the happy medium of flexibility that rem-calc() provides over pixels or in favor of percentages.  Although purely preference, I like to use rem-calc over percentages as that seemed more tangible for me to visualize at all breakpoints in development.  

Although there are the breakpoints that come out of the box with Foundation that I could use for customization, I liked the custom breakpoints that I had been using with the original site and decided to keep those in place.  I found that the custom ones oftentimes felt a bit smoother when transitioning between breakpoint sizes, but there’s still some room for expansion in that regard with screen orientation on smaller devices.  This continues to be a work in progress.

Once I dug into the CSS of Little Pioneer Cider House, rather than being overwhelmed by the magnitude of the changes I was making, I focused on modular components throughout the redesigned site.  For example, the navbar on all pages is exactly the same, as is the “Ready to Record?” call to action on most pages (except the index).  Most of the rows and column arrangements are similar throughout the pages as with buttons and type treatments.  The more that I could replace large swaths of code with (somewhat) abstracted components, the faster I was able to roll out page after page with less error and with greater cross-browser compatibility.  This was a huge win for the project.

Overall, the time to redesign Little Pioneer Cider House from inception to finish was much faster than I had anticipated- partially due to the tools that I was using, but also thanks to the difference a few years of experience made.  Although stop and start as I worked on other projects, in just a few days I was able to take the old site to a completely new experience with a minimal level of difficulty.  Craig is happy with his new site and I’m happy that I can keep building out new features on it whenever we like.  (There’s been a talk of a photo gallery for quite a while.)   A satisfying ongoing side project indeed!
