Tinky Winkynos VS Everyone Season Two (part 1)

This is the Season Two of the conquests of Tinky Winkynos.

Tinky Winkynos has escaped and he menaces the different franchises universes again. He fights against a maximum of possible fictional characters from different franchises (it can be against entire franchises).

The action: Tinky Winkynos invades the targeted suggested franchise. You must vote for the side of your choice.

The rule: You can help him conquer or you can stand against him by voting.

The result at the end of the poll will decide the fate of the universe(s) issue of his conquest(s). If The Mad Teletubby wins with more 50% of votes, he succeeds his conquest. If the franchise (TV show, video game, movie, novel, etc) wins 50%, the invasion is repelled.

146. Rick and Morty vs Dungeons and Dragons

Owned: No, library Page count: 240 My summary: Rick and Morty meets Dungeons and Dragons in this series of stories from the world of DMs and dice rolling! Morty wants to learn more about D&D to impress a girl - but Rick takes his interest too far. Rick investigates the sudden D&D mania that grips the world. And what would happen if a Mister Meeseeks got into D&D? My rating: 4/5 My commentary:

I like Rick and Morty. Controversial opinion I know, particularly with the reputation that its fanbase has, but there's genuinely a lot of really good storytelling going on in the show. When it's at its worst, sure, it's juvenile and gross, but when it's at its best it can be touching, thought-provoking, and incredibly intelligent. We got this very handsome hardback of three official D&D tie in stories at work, and so of course I was going to dip into it. The first story I'd actually already read, but the second and third were new to me, and the whole thing was a delight! It was a much deeper experience than I was expecting, and I was very pleased with it.

The first story comes when Morty, seeing his peers getting into D&D and specifically D&D podcasts, wants to start playing to impress a girl. Rick gets far too into it, and eventually plunges the whole family into a D&D world where they are in actual peril, risking both their lives and his relationships with them. This was a lot more thoughtful than I assumed it would be. It's an official tie-in comic, it's shameless promo, but there's so much character depth and introspection going on here. There's a line drawn between Rick, a minmaxer who wants to create characters with the best builds, and Jerry, not all that good at the numbers side of the game but willing to stick himself more into roleplaying and into the fiction of the world. It's showing two of the different approaches to tabletop games, yes, but it's also providing a great deal of character work. Rick is misanthropic, he's a problem player, he's sulky and annoying because he's not the best character in the world and people aren't hanging on his every word. Meanwhile Jerry, with a Charisma boost from his character, can be a much better leader of the family and the party, and understands implicitly what's going on with Rick and the underlying dynamics of their family. It's a really good read!

Our second story is something of a follow-on - suddenly, the world is D&D obsessed, and only Rick realises something's fishy. A bit of investigation shows that an alternate world inhabited by Rick's discarded D&D characters is leeching through into the real world, and it's up to him and Morty to try and stop it. Once again, we've got character development for Rick, as we see his toxic tendency to abandon his 'toys' when they're no longer interesting to him, with disastrous results when those 'toys' are people and those people resent him. Rick winds up alone for a long time, fighting and battling through all of these discarded Ricks in order to finally topple them, figuratively and literally destroying evil parts of himself. What a fucked up little man.

The Meeseeks story is more throwaway and just for fun. A pair of adventurers find a Meeseeks box and tasks the Meeseeks to get one of them a kingdom, before they both accidentally die. Meeseeks is left to fulfill his purpose by summoning more Meeseeks to create an adventuring empire, conquer a kingdom in the name of the adventure, and finally disappear. It's a fun, silly story, with lots of classic Rick and Morty humour, and I very much enjoyed it.

1. Endless Quest: Into the Jungle by @mattforbeck

Get ready! As a Dwarf-cleric, you've been given a task to rescue an adventurer who holds a very important artifact. Can you survive the jungles of Chult? Trust me: in this land, everything's a danger to you, and even victory might not feel so sweet, either. I love choosing my path in these stories, but these ones feel heavy. Good luck! *Only available in audiobook format.

2. ORCS! (Vol. 1) by Christine Larsen

A fun, somewhat juvenile, little trade paperback (without the paper if you get the Hoopla version) featuring a family of orcs banished because of a squirrel-related incident following a frustrating adventure. They'll cross paths with monsters and humanoid races common in fantasy adventures, while winding up on new adventure tying in with another ongoing story.

3. Goblin Quest by @jimhines

Now this is a fun alternative to the classic D&D-esque tropes we're all familiar with. Here we've got a klutzy, near-sighted goblin named Jig who's essentially the runt of his community... a community of cannon-fodder for adventurers! Naturally, you'd think he'd be dead when living with these bullies (especially after crossing paths with a team of adventurers). Instead, he's now their “guide” on a mission that's all too likely to get him killed.

4. The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins by Clint McElroy & @careydraws

If you want some laughs, good art, a surprisingly well-thought-out story, and a even a little bit of seriousness, this might be the book for you. You've got a human warrior, a dwarf cleric, and an elf wizard being guided by the dungeon master on an adventure based on a particularly popular podcast. Too bad this trio is so incompetent! Think they can manage some basic “gerblins” before things get really challenging? See for yourself.

5. Volo's Guide To Monsters

Want to learn about monster lore in the latest edition of D&D? Maybe create a community or dungeon? Perhaps you want to play as a monster? That's right! You can! This book is the perfect supplement for players and dungeon masters or a fun read fans of the fantasy genre.

6. The Monsters Know What They're Doing by Keith Ammann

Are you a new dungeon master setting up your first campaign or maybe a veteran DM looking for ideas to spice up your latest campaign? Do you want to make your enemy encounters more than just a hack 'n slash? Then this book just might be for you. You don't have to figure out how to get inside the monsters' heads; Keith Ammann does it for you!

7. Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons by Patrick Rothfuss

Were you expecting this? I know I wasn't! You're gonna get a lot of laughs and maybe learn a bit about the history of D&D and its past versions in this graphic novel. It might even give you some campaign ideas, or perhaps just an appreciation for how different players play the game.

8. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

Do you have a character that doesn't quite fit standard D&D mechanics? Are you player or dungeon master who perhaps favors more homebrew-styles in your campaigns? Then this might be for you. It's a more recent entry in the franchise that offers optional, reasonable variations of rules for playing, including stat bonuses, class features, and a campaign.
