Pathfinder Deity Spotlight: Cayden Cailean

Once a mortal human, Cayden Cailean is now one the few deities known as the Ascended. In his mortal years, Cayden was a sellsword of no small fame, known for his boisterous manner, skill with a blade, and fearless resolve. During a particularly rowdy night of drinking, a series of escalating dares led the wandering mercenary to attempt the Test of the Starstone. He emerged from the Starstone Cathedral 3 days later, laughing, a fully realized god. Divine responsibility did little to change Cayden’s attitude from what it was in his mortal life. He continues to crave adventure, drink, and pleasurable company while abhorring bullies, tyrants, and cowards.

Cayden has no formal churches or structure clergy, but simple shrines to him appear in almost every tavern and roadside inn. Many of his priests own such businesses and offer healing to patrons, some of whom may have been injured during a drunken brawl. While Cayden’s faith is a charitable one, Caydenites still seek payment for such services— at the very least, the injured party is expected to purchase a round of drinks for the house. Only in places where worshippers of the Accidental God are in direct opposition to the local powers, such as where a rebellion is forming under a tyrant’s nose, is his church out of the public eye. Caydenites can bring themselves to be quiet in the face of oppression only for so long, however, and once a rebellion reaches full bloom, the god’s silver tankard is often proudly displayed across every bar.

As a mortal, Cayden often found himself at odds with the work he was hired to perform and abandoned jobs that went against his conscience. This gave him a reputation for being unreliable among his more unscrupulous employers, but it garnered significant respect from clients with stronger morals. Legends tell of him taking contracts to free entire crews of slaves, undoing the operations of predatory business owners, and other rebellious deeds for the good of the common folk. His worshippers often involve themselves in similar matters: safeguarding the freedom and prosperity of working-class people, overthrowing tyrants, and helping the oppressed to relocate to freer lands. His champions, in particular, embed themselves in nations with harsh laws and stir up rebellions— often from the back room of a tavern.

Cayden Cailean, the Accidental God. God of alcohol, pubs, and freedom fighters. One of the things that the 2e source doesn’t mention, and one of the reasons that I love him, is a little tidbit I found mentioned on a wiki (so I’m assuming it’s from a 1e source). And that is that he’s called the Accidental God because he doesn’t remember how he did it. The Test of the Starstone. He doesn’t remember how he passed it. This mad lad got black out drunk, took a lethal test with a 99%+ failure rate on a dare, and then woke up three days later as a god with no idea what happened in between. Which is just. I mean. You’ve got to admire it? Exactly three people aside from Aroden have ever passed the test of the Starstone. In all of history. Three. Iomedae, goddess of paladins, Norgorber, mysterious god of thieves and murder, and this man. Cayden Cailean, the Accidental God. Who got drunk and did it on a lark, and became a god to his own surprise, let alone anyone else’s.

And who then woke up, abruptly an unplanned deity, and went right. I can do something with this.

And, okay. He’s a fairly typical Robin Hood type god? Rebel looking for a cause, champion of the little guys, an adventurer who stumbled into a lot more power than he ever could have expected. He’s the sort of cheerful, boisterous adventurer who you probably do want to punch sometimes, who has power in some ways because he lucked into it. But. But. In some ways, also, not because he lucked into it. Because he may have been drunk at the time, and he may not remember what happened, but he did pass the Starstone Test. A test that people have been attempting for four thousand years, and that killed everyone that attempted it except this man and three others. So there was skill there, as much as luck, and there was depth as well.

He's a cheerful, boisterous adventurer, an accidental god, the god of alcohol whose temples are all pubs, but he had principles even as a mortal sellsword, and he stuck to them even at the risk of his business. And he sticks to them still. He woke up from a bender as a god, and went, okay. I can help people like this. I can fight so much bigger tyrants, and protect people on so much bigger a scale. And I do respect that about him.

I also just enjoy his public house temples as well. It’s a fun sort of echo and reverse of how many medieval European breweries were in monasteries. Sometimes holy ground is the local pub. Heh. And the little detail that you can get healing services there, at the cost of at least a round of drink for the house. Like, that’s just a fun set-piece? You and your party get badly injured in a fight in the woods or the dark alleys of a city, and you drag yourself a nearby pub, and then scrounge up the coin to buy a round to get your guts put back in. A pub which, incidentally, may also be the meeting place and headquarters for the local resistance movement, with the full blessing and support of its divine patron.

There’s just. There’s a reason he’s a popular god? Even if his personality might rub you the wrong way a bit on occasion. There’s a nice thread of something genuine running under it, as well as a banger origin story, and some fun trappings to his faith.

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow (2020)

In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters -- James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna -- join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon (2013-present)

In 2059, Scion has taken over most of the world's cities, promising safety for all the citizens it deems worthy and wiping out clairvoyants wherever it can find them. 

Paige Mahoney, though, is a clairvoyant--and a criminal just for existing. Paige is determined to fight Scion's power, and as part of the Seven Seals, Paige has found a use for her powers: she scouts for information by breaking into others' minds as they dream.

Beauty has never liked her nickname. She is thin and awkward; it is her two sisters who are the beautiful ones. But what she lacks in appearance, she can perhaps make up for in courage. When her father comes home with a tale of an enchanted castle in the forest and the terrible promise he had to make to the Beast who lives there, Beauty knows she must travel to the castle, a prisoner of her own free will. Her father insists that he will not let her go, but she responds, "Cannot a Beast be tamed?"

The Immortals Quartet by Tamora Pierce (1992-1996)

Thirteen-year-old Daine has always had a special connection with animals, but only when she's forced to leave home does she realize it's more than a knack--it's magic. With this wild magic, not only can Daine speak to animals, but she can also make them obey her. The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander (1964-1968)

Taran wanted to be a hero, and looking after a pig wasn't exactly heroic, even though Hen Wen was an oracular pig. But the day that Hen Wen vanished, Taran was led into an enchanting and perilous world. With his band of followers, he confronted the Horned King and his terrible Cauldron-Born. These were the forces of evil, and only Hen Wen knew the secret of keeping the kingdom of Prydain safe from them. But who would find her first?

Seven Realms by Cinda Williams Chima (2009-2012)

Times are hard in the mountain city of Fellsmarch. Reformed thief Han Alister will do almost anything to eke out a living for his family. The only thing of value he has is something he can't sell—the thick silver cuffs he's worn since birth. They're clearly magicked—as he grows, they grow, and he's never been able to get them off.

Hi! In Traditional Witchcraft and other related practices, I think I especially want to say Fairy Faith, the idea that the practitioner has the ability to find, capitalize on, or simply create portals, gateways, and roads into the spirit world is a dominant theme.

The only time I ever see this referenced in 101 stuff is casting a circle! The concept in Traditional Witchcraft is more or less the same as a Wiccan circle, but we call it a compass. If a lot of your education is coming from online sources, you may be unaware that a primary function of a magic circle is to "join the worlds" and, as Kelden puts it,

On a deeper level, though, and most central to Traditional Witchcraft, the compass is a liminal place, a doorway through which we can enter into the Otherworld.

On one hand, the word compass is synonymous with the word circle, but it also denotes the well-known navigational tool used in travel. This second meaning makes a lot of sense in the context that Traditional Witches use the compass round to navigate and traverse the different realms.

Kelden, The Crooked Path, 2020 (emphasis my own)

For a spirit-working witch, the skill of learning where to find spirits and how to reliably call them is a skill which I believe is separate from brokering deals. I also believe that working with these gateways is probably a fundamental skill of witchcraft.

The witch has many tools at their disposal for creating gateways into the spirit world and walking back and forth between this world and the next, with new knowledge, allies, and powers.

Some of these gateways are physical locations, each of which may lead to a different place in the otherworld, or make it easier or more difficult to access certain powers.

A small, secluded cave half-filled with water at the bottom of a steep riverbank may be the ideal location to enter the Underworld, or commune with chthonic powers.

A tiny thicket formed by the arch of a rosemary bush where it tangles with the branches of a thorny rose may be an excellent location to leave tiny gifts for the Greenwood and commune with the green folk.

Much more accessible for many of us is indeed just the concept of crossroads, either a 4-way X or a 3-way T. These locations are long famed for being the meeting places of spirits, or ideal locations to leave offerings or broker spirit deals. The Devil Himself is often said to be haunting just such remote crossroads.

But these gateways don't just have to be found. The witch has the power to create them.

Exhibit A - casting a circle (or more accurately to say, laying a compass).

Also, I believe the creation of a spellcasting altar, if properly magicked and tended to, begins to become liminal in and of itself - it literally becomes a doorway to the otherworlds.

Certain human-made locations, like gas stations and grocery stores, are often considered to be gateways and have been used by some practitioners to fulfill spellwork.

Various charms and talismans can assist with creating doorways navigating the liminal, most famously the Holey or Hag stone.

Robin Artisson details several methods of understanding, discovering, creating, and working with such doorways, I believe in Witching Way of Hollow Hill, but especially in An Carow Gwyn, in the section called The Breaching Charms: The Gateways into Sorcerous Experience.

Daniel Schulke, at least in Viridarium Umbris, provides several sigils and charms for obtaining entrance into the otherworld.

Roger J Horne, in A Broom at Midnight, details thirteen "gateways" to spirit flight. While these are specifically methods of entering astral travel, any student of the concept of gateways and doors within witchcraft I think would benefit from studying the rituals within.

Speaking of astral travel, many common methods espoused include imagining that a person is climbing down the roots of a tree, or inside of the trunk of a tree and floating down like an elevator; or going down a well. All of these things are analogous to (or, the same thing as) mentally seeking out a gateway to the otherworld, searching in mental constructs of places in nature where gateways are commonly found or believed to be found.

Indeed, the concept of roads, gates, thresholds, and doors, is (I think) a vital contemplation to the understanding of Witchcraft itself, and it is upon these bedrocks that a great deal of witchcraft has been built.

Going with Stranger Things cause that's what most people follow me for these days, and what I'm still writing the most for. The first fic I can find in my searchable drafts is also my first published fic it's his party (and i'll fall if i want to). I had to read back over this a bit to find some lines, that I wanted to post, this fic is from July of 2022 (longest running fixation in a minute) but there are about a thousand things I would do differently with this fic if I were writing it today. Though some of the movement descriptions and scene setting hold up -- might need to get back into that.

Steve laughs, it makes Eddie’s heart and hands flutter. Not good. “Total babe, right?”

“Well,” Eddie interrupts, might as well be his catchphrase at this point, “I can see when I’m not needed. I’m gonna find some real fun before I get indoctrinated into this little cult next.”

Steve looks back at him now, and surely that’s not disappointment on his face; it has to be another social interaction that Eddie is reading wrong. “Wouldn’t want that, you’ve got a cult of your own to run. Don’t you, Munson?”

“That’s what they tell me.” Horns up, tongue out, Steve laughs again in response.

“Eddie, disrespecfullly,” Robin says, “fuck off. The captain of the swim team is about to introduce me to a cheerleader.”

“Alright, alright, I’ll find some way to entertain myself.” He sweeps down into a deep bow, rings scratching against the floor as his hand moves, “M’lady, m’lord. Find me when you’re ready to leave, Buckley.”

round robin games are largely meaningless to me because i watched the stars round robin games in 2020 and i think if we're being generous they MAYBE won one of them . and i let every hockey opinion i have be dictated by the delusion of being a stars fan that year.

Trust Fall - 43k (WIP), JayTim, written with @kieran-granola. Civilian Tim Drake enters an arrangement with the crime lord Red Hood in an effort to gain access to a trust fund with some very particular requirements.

Robin Hood and the Shadow - 6k, JayTim. Tim Drake's quiet return to life and the Shadow he picked up along the way. Reverse Robins not!fic.

Beggars in Space - 8k, JayTim. Tim thought it wouldn't be too bad, transferring to the USS Eureka. Unfortunately, no one thought to tell him ensigns don't rate cabins on California-class ships, and must instead make do with very public bunk beds. To make matters even worse, one of the other ensigns hates him. Or: JayTim, but make it Star Trek: Lower Decks.

Banshee Boy - 6k (WIP), Jason&Tim. In the original Irish, ben síde means “fairy woman.” Tim’s dad says the name happened because the women of their family are the ones with the flashy powers. What the Drake men can do isn't not relevant to anything Tim does in the mask. Until, quite abruptly, it is.

Parasitic Relationship - 750, gen, Tim-centric. Tim asked Dick Grayson to be Robin again. It went poorly, to say the least. He's not sure what the next step should be (but it's probably not this).

Easing Into Life - 447, JayTimKon. It's awkward, finding yourself a part of a relationship that's been going strong for nearly half a decade by the time you arrive. Tim is a bit reluctant to go public… his soulmates don't make it easy.

QUARANTINED: RED ROBIN’S TIK TOK ACCOUNT by JustThatOneGirl1815 (https://archiveofourown.org/works/23175265/chapters/55471618) Batman. Red Robin decides to make a vigilante themed Tik Tok account because it’s 2020 and all of Gotham is on lockdown. And he’s stuck at Wayne Manor with his siblings. Shenanigans ensue. This was written during 2020 and it shows with a lot of references to things that have happened during that year. It’s funny with some serious moments. And all round an enjoyable read!

Again, A+ title on this one, and even though this hits hard with the Covid-19 inclusion, WHEW I LOVE THE IDEA. Also, the summary had me cheering:

Duncan Curdy MacSporran Haston was born on April 19th 1940.

Commonly known as Dougal, Haston was one of the finest climber Scotland has ever produced.

Haston was born in the parish of Currie on the West Side of Edinburgh in 1940 .Even with the war on Haston seemed destined to follow in the footsteps of countless others into a life of work in the mills and shops and on into obscurity. However, history and Everest would hold an entirely different destiny for Dougal.

Haston developed a taste for climbing while trekking about the Pentlands in Scotland. Rock climbing skills were acquired by clambering up railway and riverside walls around Currie. Already showing a mischievous streak, which would become darker later in life, Haston and friends would climb to the top of Currie Church and leave things, including women’s underwear, atop the flagpole!

He soon began rock and ice climbing and struck up a friendship with another climber, Robin Smith, who like so many others would die climbing. Smith died in 1962, 4 years before Haston gained fame for the first direct (bottom to top) ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in the Swiss alps. Though a broken rope would claim the life of American climbing great John Harlin during the climb, Haston would finish the ascent with a group of German climbers and name the route John Harlin Direct.

His run-up to a climb of Everest included the first climb of the South Face of Annapurna in 1970, and the first summit of Changabang in India in 1974. Along with fellow Briton Doug Scott, Haston summited Everest via a previously unclimbed route up the South West Face. Though forced to spend the night following their summit huddled in a hand-dug snow cave at the South Summit the two emerged unharmed by their experience. Later that same year Haston would participate in the first climb of the South West face of Mount McKinley in Alaska.

Haston was no angel, his exploits away from the climbing routes were as legendary as his feats of mountaineering. He led a life renowned for drinking, fighting, stealing and risky climbs which would culminate in a drunk-driving accident in which a person was killed, a conviction and prison time.

His career and life was cut short by an avalanche while skiing in the Alps in 1977. There is a plaque honouring him on a railway bridge in Currie where he was born and learned to climb.

There’s a great article in the Herald from 2001 focusing on his girlfriend Ariane Giobellina which must have been very hard for her………the article has a paywall on it since I last read it, but if you are clever there are ways round it, I myself use Tor Browser to get round them.

It’s easy; she’s wearing a boy’s polo and Byers clocks that too, she thinks, the way his eyes flickered to the collar of it when he saw her on her stoop. She knows he knows. But he doesn’t mention it, so neither does she. In the aftermath of Starcourt, Robin goes on.
